Enhanced and Proficient Soft Template Array of Polyaniline-TiO2 Nanocomposites Fibers Prepared Using Anionic Surfactant for Fuel Cell Hydrogen Storage

Porous TiO2-doped polyaniline and polyaniline nanocomposite fibers prepared by the in situ polymerization technique using anionic surfactant in an ice bath were studied. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and XRD patterns for structural analysis. The surface morphology of the polyaniline and its nanocomposites was examined using SEM images. DC conductivity shows the three levels of conductivity inherent in a semiconductor. Among the nanocomposites, the maximum DC conductivity is 5.6 S/cm for 3 wt.% polyaniline-TiO2 nanocomposite. Cyclic voltammetry shows the properties of PANI due to the redox peaks of 0.93 V and 0.24 V. Both peaks are due to the redox transition of PANI from the semiconductor to the conductive state. The hydrogen absorption capacity is approximately 4.5 wt.%, but at 60 °C the capacity doubles to approximately 7.3 wt.%. Conversely, 3 wt.% PANI-TiO2 nanocomposites have a high absorption capacity of 10.4 wt.% compared to other nanocomposites. An overall desorption capacity of 10.4 wt.% reduced to 96% was found for 3 wt.% TiO2-doped PANI nanocomposites.

The Effect of Chitosan on Physicochemical Properties of Whey Protein Isolate Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering Applications

New scaffolds, based on whey protein isolate (WPI) and chitosan (CS), have been proposed and investigated as possible materials for use in osteochondral tissue repair. Two types of WPI-based hydrogels modified by CS were prepared: CS powder was incorporated into WPI in either dissolved or suspended powder form. The optimal chemical composition of the resulting WPI/CS hydrogels was chosen based on the morphology, structural properties, chemical stability, swelling ratio, wettability, mechanical properties, bioactivity, and cytotoxicity evaluation. The hydrogels with CS incorporated in powder form exhibited superior mechanical properties and higher porosity, whereas those with CS incorporated after dissolution showed enhanced wettability, which decreased with increasing CS content. The introduction of CS powder into the WPI matrix promoted apatite formation, as confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. In vitro cytotoxicity results confirmed the cytocompatibility of CS powder modified WPI hydrogels, suggesting their suitability as cell scaffolds. These findings demonstrate the promising potential of WPI/CS scaffolds for osteochondral tissue repair.

Synergistic effect of silver NPs immobilized on Fe3O4@L-proline magnetic nanocomposite toward the photocatalytic degradation of Victoria blue and reduction of organic pollutants

The surface of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles was subject to modification through the incorporation of L-proline (LP) by simple co-precipitation method in which silver nanoparticles were deposited by in situ method, thereby yielding the Fe₃O₄@LP-Ag nanocatalyst. The fabricated nanocatalyst was characterized using an array of techniques including Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results evince that the immobilization of LP on the Fe₃O₄ magnetic support facilitated the dispersion and stabilization of Ag NPs. The SPION@LP-Ag nanophotocatalyst exhibited exceptional catalytic efficiency facilitating the reduction of MO, MB, p-NP, p-NA, NB, and CR in the presence of NaBH₄. The rate constants obtained from the pseudo-first-order equation were 0.78, 0.41, 0.34, 0.27, 0.45, 0.44, and 0.34 min^-1 for CR, p-NP, NB, MB, MO, and p-NA, respectively. Additionally, the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model was deemed the most probable mechanism for catalytic reduction. The novelty of this study lies in the use of L-proline immobilized on Fe₃O₄ MNPs as a stabilizing agent for the in-situ deposition of silver nanoparticles, resulting in the synthesis of Fe₃O₄@LP-Ag nanocatalyst. This nanocatalyst exhibits high catalytic efficacy for the reduction of multiple organic pollutants and azo dyes, which can be attributed to the synergistic effects between the magnetic support and the catalytic activity of the silver nanoparticles. The easy recyclability and low cost of the Fe₃O₄@LP-Ag nanocatalyst further enhance its potential application in environmental remediation.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Docking Study of Novel Thioureidophosphonate-Incorporated Silver Nanocomposites as Potent Antibacterial Agents

Newly synthesized mono- and bis-thioureidophosphonate (MTP and BTP) analogues in eco-friendly conditions were employed as reducing/capping cores for 100, 500, and 1000 mg L^-1 of silver nitrate. The physicochemical properties of silver nanocomposites (MTP(BTP)/Ag NCs) were fully elucidated using spectroscopic and microscopic tools. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposites was screened against six multidrug-resistant pathogenic strains, comparable to ampicillin and ciprofloxacin commercial drugs. The antibacterial performance of BTP was more substantial than MTP, notably with the best minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.0781 mg/mL towards Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Among all, BTP provided the clearest zone of inhibition (ZOI) of 35 ± 1.00 mm against Salmonella typhi. After the dispersion of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), MTP/Ag NCs offered dose-dependently distinct advantages over the same nanoparticle with BTP; a more noteworthy decline by 4098 × MIC to 0.1525 × 10^-3 mg/mL was recorded for MTP/Ag-1000 against Pseudomonas aeruginosa over BTP/Ag-1000. Towards methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the as-prepared MTP(BTP)/Ag-1000 displayed superior bactericidal ability in 8 h. Because of the anionic surface of MTP(BTP)/Ag-1000, they could effectively resist MRSA (ATCC-43300) attachment, achieving higher antifouling rates of 42.2 and 34.4% at most optimum dose (5 mg/mL), respectively. The tunable surface work function between MTP and AgNPs promoted the antibiofilm activity of MTP/Ag-1000 by 1.7 fold over BTP/Ag-1000. Lastly, the molecular docking studies affirmed the eminent binding affinity of BTP over MTP-besides the improved binding energy of MTP/Ag NC by 37.8%-towards B. subtilis-2FQT protein. Overall, this study indicates the immense potential of TP/Ag NCs as promising nanoscale antibacterial candidates.

Development of highly efficient magnetically recyclable Cu2+/Cu0 nano-photocatalyst and its enhanced catalytic performance for the degradation of organic contaminations

This work reports the successful functionalization of l-proline on the surface of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) synthesized via a simple, cost-effective hydrothermal method. Moreover, the chemical attachment of Cu²⁺/Cu⁰ nanoparticles on the surface of SPION@l-proline was done by an in-situ deposition method. The developed nano-photocatalyst was characterized in detail by XRD, FT-IR, XPS, FE-SEM, TEM, EDX, BET, TGA, and VSM. XRD of SPION@l-proline-Cu reveals peaks of both SPION and copper nanoparticles which confirms the formation of nanophotocatalyst. TGA demonstrates a major weight loss between 250 and 310 °C due to l-proline which ensures the successful immobilization of SPION on the surface of l-proline. The band energy at 932 eV suggests a complete reduction of Cu²⁺ ion to Cu⁰ metal on the surface of SPION@l-proline nanocomposite as confirmed by the XPS technique. Under UV light irradiation, the photocatalytic reduction performance of the developed Cu²⁺ metal ion-based and Cu⁰ nanoparticle-based magnetic nano-photocatalysts was demonstrated and compared for the first time for the photocatalytic reduction of 4-NP, 4-NA, NB, MO, MB, and CR. The results show that Cu⁰-based magnetic nanophotocatalyst has slightly enhanced catalytic activity. Furthermore, solar-driven photocatalytic degradation of CR azo dye by synthesized nano-photocatalyst was also investigated, with a 95 % degradation efficiency in just 40 min. The developed magnetic nano-photocatalyst can easily be separated by using an external magnet due to the superparamagnetic nature of core material (SPION) at room temperature as confirmed from VSM and can be reused for multiple cycles without losing considerable catalytic activity. Because of its high photocatalytic efficiency, cost-effectiveness, good magnetic separation performance, non-toxicity, and strong thermal and chemical stabilities, Cu²⁺/Cu⁰-based magnetic nano-photocatalyst has potential application in wastewater treatment.

Iron-Oxide-Nanoparticles-Doped Polyaniline Composite Thin Films

Iron-oxide-doped polyaniline (PANI-IO) thin films were obtained by the polymerization of aniline monomers and iron oxide solutions in direct current glow discharge plasma in the absence of a buffer gas for the first time. The PANI-IO thin films were deposited on optical polished Si wafers in order to study surface morphology and evaluate their in vitro biocompatibility. The characterization of the coatings was accomplished using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), metallographic microscopy (MM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In vitro biocompatibility assessments were also conducted on the PANI-IO thin films. It was observed that a uniform distribution of iron oxide particles inside the PANI layers was obtained. The constituent elements of the coatings were uniformly distributed. The Fe-O bonds were associated with magnetite in the XPS studies. The surface morphology of the PANI-IO thin films was assessed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM topographies revealed that PANI-IO exhibited the morphology of a uniformly distributed and continuous layer. The viability of Caco-2 cells cultured on the Si substrate and PANI-IO coating was not significantly modified compared to control cells. Moreover, after 24 h of incubation, we observed no increase in LDH activity in media in comparison to the control. In addition, our results revealed that the NO levels for the Si substrate and PANI-IO coating were similar to those found in the control sample.

Aniline-co-o-anthranilic Acid Copolymer-Chitosan/Ag@AgCl Nanohybrid as a Carrier for (E)-N'-(Pyridin-2-ylmethylene) Hydrazinecarbothiohydrazide Release and Antimicrobial Activity

Poly(aniline-co-o-anthranilic acid)-chitosan/silver@silver chloride (PAAN-CS/Ag@AgCl) nanohybrids were synthesized using different ratios of Ag@AgCl through a facile one-step process. The presence of CS led to the formation of the nanohybrid structure and prevented the aggregation of the copolymer efficiently. The synthesized nanohybrids were fully characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. (E)-N'-(Pyridin-2-ylmethylene) hydrazinecarbothiohydrazide I was prepared using thiosemicarbazide and confirmed by ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, and FTIR analyses. Loading of the azine derivative I using various concentrations at different pH values onto the nanohybrid was followed by UV-vis spectroscopy. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were used to describe the equilibrium isotherm, and the adsorption followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. A pseudo-second-order model was used to describe the kinetic data. A PAAN-CS/Ag@AgCl nanohybrid loaded with azine I interestingly showed efficient antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus more than the azine derivative I. The release of azine I at different pH values (2-7.4) was investigated and the kinetics of release were studied using zero-order, first-order, second-order, Higuchi, Hixson-Crowell, and Korsmeyer-Peppas equations.

Electrochemical Sensor Based on Reduced Graphene Oxide/Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes/Octahedral Fe3O4/Chitosan Composite for Glyphosate Detection

In this work, reduced graphene oxide/double-walled carbon nanotubes/octahedral-Fe3O4/chitosan composite material modified screen-printed gold electrodes (rGO/DWCNTs/Oct-Fe3O4/Cs/SPAuE) under inhibition of urease enzyme was developed for the determination of glyphosate (GLY). The electrochemical behaviors of GLY on these electrodes were evaluated by square wave voltammetry (SWV). With the electroactive surface area is 1.7 times higher than that of bare SPAuE, the rGO/DWCNTs/Oct-Fe3O4/Cs/SPAuE for detection of GLY shows a low detection limit (LOD) of ~ 0.08 ppb in a large concentration range of 0.1-1000 ppb. Moreover, it is also successfully applied to the determination of GLY in river water samples with recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) from 98.7% to 106.9% and from 0.79% to 0.87%, respectively. The developed composite will probably provide an universal electrochemical sensing platform that is very promising for environmental monitoring.

Novel eco-friendly electrospun nanomagnetic zinc oxide hybridized PVA/alginate/chitosan nanofibers for enhanced phenol decontamination

In the current study, poly(vinyl alcohol)/alginate/chitosan (PVA/Alg/CS) composite nanofiber was immobilized with six different ratios of nanomagnetic zinc oxide (M-ZnO) (0 wt%, 0.2 wt%, 0.4 wt%, 0.6 wt%, 0.8 wt%, and 1 wt%) via the electrospinning technique. The various fabricated composite (M-6) nanofibers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical testing machine, and optical contact angle measurement. The fabricated composite nanofibers were applied for the adsorption of phenol from aqueous solutions. The 1.0 wt% M-ZnO/PVA/Alg/CS composite nanofibers were selected as the best phenol adsorbent with removal percentage of 84.22%. The influence of different processing parameter such as contact time, composite nanofiber dosage, pH, initial pollutant concentration, and temperature were examined. Increasing nanofiber dosage and the solution temperature was found to enhance the phenol adsorption onto the prepared nanocomposites. The maximum percentage of phenol removal was achieved at 84.22% after 90 min. Meanwhile, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (at pH = 5.0) was estimated to be 10.03 mg g^-1 at 25 °C. Kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies were designated to proof the endothermic, spontaneous, and thermodynamically nature of the phenol adsorption process. These outcomes indicate the effectiveness of the fabricated M-ZnO/PVA/Alg/CS nanofibers as adsorbent materials for phenol from aqueous solutions.

Revamping squid gladii to biodegradable composites: In situ grafting of polyaniline to β-chitin and their antibacterial activity

The global health concern on wound care is becoming more challenging with the emerging prevalence of inexorable antibiotic resistance. Amidst this crisis, various material innovations have been made to combat this dilemma. Herein, squid pens, which are regarded as discards in the seafood industry, were biorefined into β-chitin-graft-polyaniline (β-chitin-g-PANI) composites for possible wound dressing development. β-chitin was first chemically extracted from gladii, and was then grafted with PANI via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of various concentrations of aniline, to produce the β-chitin-g-PANI composites. Supporting data from FTIR, UV-Vis, SEM, TGA, and DSC suggest that β-chitin was successfully grafted with PANI. Moreover, improved conductivity and in vitro degradation of the composites were observed as compared to β-chitin and PANI alone, respectively. Zones of inhibition observed from agar diffusion method suggest that the synthesized composites have antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The resulting physicochemical and biological properties of integrating conducting PANI to β-chitin substantiated and rendered the β-chitin-g-PANI composites desirable candidates for the development wound care products.

Interfacially Interactive Ternary Silver-Supported Polyaniline/Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites for Catalytic and Antibacterial Activity

Herein, a protocol strategy has been designed for the preparation of ternary silver nanoparticles-supported polyaniline multiwalled carbon nanotube (Ag NPs-PANI/MWCNT) nanocomposites with a chemical interaction for catalytic and antibacterial activity. The morphological study confirmed that Ag NPs were immobilized on the surface of PANI, and afterward, Ag NPs-PANI were mixed with the MWCNTs. The X-ray diffraction technique revealed the face-centered cubic structure of Ag NPs, and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study revealed the chemical constituent and signature of π-π* and C-N interactions in the nanocomposites. The ternary Ag NPs-PANI/MWCNTs nanocomposites have the apparent rate of reaction (K _app) as 5.4 × 10^-3 s^-1, higher than binary nanocomposites for catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol at room temperature. Antibacterial activity of Ag NPs-PANI/MWCNT nanocomposites is higher against pathogenic bacteria. Thereafter, because of multifold applications of ternary nanocomposites, they have a broad scope in the field of environmental and healthcare sectors.

Bimetallic Nanoparticles Anchored on Core-Shell Support as an Easily Recoverable and Reusable Catalytic System for Efficient Nitroarene Reduction

We report an easily recoverable and reusable versatile magnetic catalyst (Fe3O4@CS_AgNi, where CS = chitosan) for organic reduction reactions. The catalytic system is prepared by dispersing AgNi bimetallic nanoparticles on the magnetite core-shell (Fe3O4@CS). The as-synthesized catalyst has been characterized by spectroscopic techniques, such as IR, UV-vis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and analytical tools, such as thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller adsorption, FEG-scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. HR-TEM studies indicate the core-shell structure of Fe3O4@CS and confirm the presence of AgNi nanoparticles on the surface of Fe3O4@CS spheres. IR spectral and XPS studies lend evidence for the occurrence of a strong chemical interaction between the amino groups of CS and AgNi nanoparticles. The nano-catalyst Fe3O4@CS_AgNi rapidly reduces p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol using NaBH4 as the reductant within a few minutes under ambient conditions (as monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy). The utility of this catalytic system has also been extended to the reduction of other nitroarenes. A strong interaction between Fe3O4@CS and AgNi nanoparticles impedes the leaching of AgNi nanoparticles from the core-shell support, leading to excellent reusability of the catalyst.

Recent Advances in the Nanocatalysts-assisted NaBH4 Reduction of Nitroaromatics in water

In view of the increasing applications of nanocatalysis in chemical transformations, this article illustrates recent advances on the use of nanocatalysts for an important reduction reaction, the hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to significant aminoaromatics with aqueous NaBH₄ solution; the utility of mono- and multi-metal nanocatalysts with special emphasis on heterogeneous nanocatalysts are included. A progressive trend on the applicability of nanocatalysts is also incorporated with large scale application and their sustainable recyclization and reuse utilizing supported and magnetic nanocatalysts; representative methods for the synthesis of such reusable nanocatalysts are featured.

Rational design of a polypyrrole-based competent bifunctional magnetic nanocatalyst

The combination of conducting polymers with semiconductors for the fabrication of organic/inorganic hybrid nanocatalysts is one of the most promising research areas for many applications. In this work, the synthesized nanocomposite combines several advantages such as the photoresponse shift from the UV region toward visible light by narrowing the band gap of the semiconductor, magnetic separation ability and dual applications including the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (PNP) and the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. In addition to the core magnetite nanoparticles (NPs), the synthesized nanocomposite contains polypyrrole (PPY) and TiO₂ shells that are decorated with silver metal NPs to prevent electron–hole recombination and to enhance the catalytic performance. Indeed, the catalytic PNP reduction experiments reveal that the synthesized nanocomposite exhibits significantly high catalytic activity with a rate constant of 0.1169 min⁻¹. Moreover, the photocatalytic experiments show that the synthesized nanophotocatalyst has a boosting effect toward MB dye degradation under normal daytime visible light irradiation with a rate constant of 6.38 × 10⁻² min⁻¹. The synergetic effect between silver NPs, PPY and TiO₂ is thought to play a fundamental role in enhancing the photocatalytic activity.

An efficient method to synthesize a magnetic nanocomposite with dual catalytic activities with a synergetic effect between Ag nanoparticles, polypyrrole and TiO₂ is described.

Redox-Responsive Polymer Template as an Advanced Multifunctional Catalyst Support for Silver Nanoparticles

Hybridization of metal nanoparticles (NPs) with redox-switchable polymer supports not only mitigates their aggregation, but also introduces interfacial electron pathways desirable for catalysis and numerous other applications. The large surface area and surface accessible atoms for noble metal nanoparticles (e.g., Ag, Au, Pt) offer promising opportunities to address challenges in catalysis and environmental remediation. Herein, AgNPs were supported onto redox-switchable polyaniline that acts as an advanced multifunctional conducting template for enhanced catalytic activity. At the initial stage of reduction of Ag⁺, leucoemeraldine is oxidized in situ to pernigraniline (PG), which acts as interfacial pathway between NPs for electron transport. With the contribution of BH₄^-, PG acts as an electron-acceptor site, which creates interfacial electron-hole pairs, serving as additional active catalytic reduction sites. The use of a redox-responsive composite system as a template enhances catalyst performance through adjustable charge injection across interfacial sites, along with catalyst reusability for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NPh). Strikingly, from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results it was observed that in situ reduction of Ag⁺ onto the conductive polymer alters the electronic character of the catalyst. The unique multielectronic effects of such Ag-supported NPs enrich the scope of such catalytic systems via a tunable interface, diversified catalytic activity, fast kinetics, minimization of AgNPs aggregation, and maintenance of high stability under multiple reaction cycles.

Eco-friendly seeded Fe3O4-Ag nanocrystals: a new type of highly efficient and low cost catalyst for methylene blue reduction

Hybrid Fe₃O₄-Ag nanocrystals, a new type of highly efficient and reusable catalyst for methylene blue (MB) reduction, are fabricated by a novel seed deposition process. X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy results show that the developed iron oxides are in a pure magnetite Fe₃O₄ phase. Upon manipulating the amount of Ag seeds capsuled on the modified surfaces of Fe₃O₄ nanocrystals, the catalytic capacities on the reduction of MB can be precisely adjusted with a tunable fabrication cost control. The linear correlation of the reduced MB concentration versus reaction time catalyzed by our developed hybrid Fe₃O₄-Ag nanocrystals is coherent with pseudo first order kinetics. Importantly, with remarkable recyclability features, the hybrid Fe₃O₄-Ag nanocrystals can be easily separated by applying an external magnetic field. The tailored catalytic performances of the hybrid Fe₃O₄-Ag nanocrystals during MB reduction are attributed to the optimized dynamic electron transfer process, which dominates the electrochemical mechanism wherein the nucleophilic BH₄⁻ ions donate electrons to electrophilic organic MB through Ag seeds in a regulated amount. Such developed hybrid Fe₃O₄-Ag nanocrystals pave the way towards the mass production of highly efficient and low cost catalysts for methylene blue reduction.
