Characteristics of the pyrolytic products and the pollutant emissions at different operating stages from a pilot waste tire pyrolysis furnace

Pyrolysis is considered a highly practical, cost-effective, and environment-friendly technology for waste tires disposal. In this study, pyrolysis processes of waste tires were conducted in a pilot scale furnace feeding at 30 kg/h. The properties of pyrolytic products and the distribution patterns of pollutants generated in different operating stages (start-up, steady, and shut-down) were investigated. The pyrolytic gas in the steady state had a high caloric value of 10799 kJ/Nm3, valuable as heating source for pyrolysis. The elements of sulfur and zinc were effectively fixed as ZnS in the pyrolytic carbon. The basic properties of pyrolytic oil were in line with commercial diesel oil except for the lower flash point. Heavy metals were mainly concentrated in the pyrolytic carbon, with slightly higher concentrations in the steady state. Moreover, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were mainly concentrated in the pyrolytic oil, with predominated low-ring PAHs and high chlorinated PCDD/Fs. The concentrations of PAHs and PCDD/Fs in the gas phase were higher during the start-up stage due to the memory effect, whereas were effectively reduced during the steady stage. The concentration of PAHs in the solid phase was highest during the furnace start-up and lowest in the shut-down stage. In contrast to PAHs, the PCDD/Fs in the solid phase reached their highest concentration during the shut-down stage, which was mainly affected by temperature. The results provide guidance for the reducing of pollutant emissions and the recycling of pyrolytic products.

Formation of organic chloride in the treatment of textile dyeing sludge by Fenton system

In the oxidation treatment of textile dyeing sludge, the quantitative and transformation laws of organic chlorine are not clear enough. Thus, this study mainly evaluated the treatment of textile dyeing sludge by Fenton and Fenton-like system from the aspects of the influence of Cl^-, the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organic carbon, and the removal and formation mechanism of organic chlorine. The results showed that the organic halogen in sludge was mainly hydrophobic organic chlorine, and the content of adsorbable organic chlorine (AOCl) was 0.30 mg/g (dry sludge). In the Fenton system with pH=3, 500 mg/L Cl^-, 30 mmol/L Fe²⁺ and 30 mmol/L H₂O₂, the removal of phenanthrene was promoted by chlorine radicals (•Cl), and the AOCl in sludge solid phase increased to 0.55 mg/g (dry sludge) at 30 min. According to spectral analysis, it was found that •Cl could chlorinate aromatic and aliphatic compounds (excluding PAHs) in solid phase at the same time, and eventually led to the accumulation of aromatic chlorides in solid phase. Strengthening the oxidation ability of Fenton system increased the formation of organic chlorines in liquid and solid phases. In weak acidity, the oxidation and desorption of superoxide anion promoted the removal and migration of PAHs and organic carbon in solid phase, and reduced the formation of total organic chlorine. The Fenton-like system dominated by non-hydroxyl radical could realize the mineralization of PAHs, organic carbon and organic chlorines instead of migration. This paper builds a basis for the selection of sludge conditioning methods.

Chemical Characteristics and Cytotoxicity to GC-2spd(ts) Cells of PM2.5 in Nanjing Jiangbei New Area from 2015 to 2019

PM_2.5 is an air pollutant with complex components. After entering the body through respiration, PM_2.5 can not only cause respiratory diseases, but also break through the blood-testis barrier and influence the reproductive system. PM_2.5 with different components may result in different toxic effects. In the first five years of Nanjing Jiangbei New Area, industrial transformation would change the concentration and chemical fraction of PM_2.5 in the local environment to a certain extent. In this study, PM_2.5 collected in Nanjing Jiangbei New Area every autumn and winter from 2015 to 2019 was analyzed. PM_2.5 concentration generally decreased year by year. The large proportion of secondary inorganic ions indicated the presence of secondary pollution at the sampling site. PM_2.5 was mainly emitted from fossil fuel combustion and vehicle exhaust. The cytotoxicity of PM_2.5 samples was evaluated by PM_2.5 exposure to mouse spermatocytes (GC-2spd(ts) cells). Cell viability was relatively low in 2016 and 2018, and relatively high in 2017 and 2019. Reactive oxygen species levels and DNA damage levels followed similar trends, with an overall annual decrease. The cytotoxicity of PM_2.5 on GC-2spd(ts) cells was significantly correlated with water-soluble ions, water-soluble organic carbon, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (p < 0.01). According to principal component analysis and multiple linear regression, fossil fuel combustion, secondary transformation of pollutants and construction dust were identified as the major contributors to cytotoxic effects, contributing more than 50%.

Combined effects of vehicles and waste incineration on urban air halogenated and parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Traffic emissions and waste incineration are the main sources of PAHs in urban atmosphere, but their spatially superimposed effects are currently unclear. This study assessed the spatial distribution of PAHs and HPAHs concentrations in the atmosphere of Shenzhen by simulating the spatial and temporal dispersion of PAHs and HPAHs emissions from on-road vehicles and municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs). Generally, the concentrations of PAHs and HPAHs were higher on workdays than on weekends due to higher traffic volumes, while the prevailing wind direction of the northeast could cause more widespread dispersion of PAHs and HPAHs within Shenzhen's atmosphere. After superimposing the spatial distribution of pollutants emitted by vehicles and MSWIs, PAHs within 1000 m downwind of MSWIs are mainly contributed by MSWIs and beyond 1000 m by vehicles. The cancer risk values induced by exposure to PAHs and HPAHs via inhalation in Shenzhen were below the acceptable risk level for males and females in each age group, while adults faced the highest cancer risk, followed by adolescents and children. However, spatially, the cancer risk values were above the priority risk level for adult males in localized high-traffic areas in Futian and Luohu districts.

Formation and control of dioxins during thermal desorption remediation of chlorine and non-chlorine organic contaminated soil

Formation and emission of dioxins is a great concern during thermal desorption remediation of organic contaminated soil. The differential formation of dioxins from chlorine organic contaminated soil (COCS) and non-chlorine organic contaminated soil (NCOCS) is still unclear and the control technique for the dioxins generated is an urgent need. In this study, the formation and distribution characteristics of dioxins were investigated in the thermal desorption unit combined with flue gas purification system during COCS and NCOCS treatments. Although organic contaminates were well desorbed, de-novo formation of dioxins was observed for both COCS and NCOCS, as well as synthesis from precursors for NCOCS. The gas-phase dioxin in the flue gas purification system continuously decreased during NCOCS thermal desorption, while the dioxin concentration in the quench tower sharply increased from 0.46 to 2.13 ng/Nm³ through de-novo synthesis during COCS treatment. Furthermore, the emission of dioxins only slightly reduced (for COCS) or even increased (for NCOCS) at 70% operating load. The catalytic adsorption tower within modified activated carbon and V₅-Mo₅-Ti catalyst after bag filter can reduce the emission of dioxins up to 91.4% at the condition of secondary combustion chamber closure, demonstrating that the catalytic adsorption tower can replace the secondary combustion chamber for controlling dioxin emission. More importantly, the highly toxic low-chlorinated polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDFs) were selectively removed from flue gas by the catalytic adsorption tower. These results reveal the differential formation characteristics of dioxins during COCS and NCOCS thermal treatments and highlight V₅-Mo₅-Ti/ modified activated carbon as a promising catalytic adsorption material to control the emission of dioxins from the thermal desorption of organic contaminated soil.

Generalized prediction and optimal operating parameters of PCDD/F emissions by explainable Bayesian support vector regression

The current derived models for predicting polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/F) emissions from incineration can only be applied to a specific incinerator due to high deviation or systematic errors. And the models fail to provide quantized guidance for the operation of full-scale municipal solid waste incinerators. To address the problem, explainable Bayesian support vector regression (E-BSVR) has been established to generalized predict and maximumly reduce the PCDD/F emissions. First, forty-two PCDD/F samples were determined from a whole year experiment in a full-scale incinerator. Meanwhile, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene(1,2,4-TrCBz), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, oxynitride, particulate matter, fluoride, and hydrogen chloride were measured, as input features. Second, after box-cox transformation normalization, and hyperparameters tuning, the R-Squared and root mean square error (RMSE) of the proposed method are 0.983 and 0.044, exhibiting high accuracy. The high accuracy (R-Squared = 0.992) and generalization are also proven on the dataset with high PCDD/F emissions. Then, the performances of BSVR are compared with kernel ridge regression, multiple linear regression, and unary linear regression, indicating afar smaller RMSE of BSVR. Finally, the optimal operating parameters are calculated through local interpretable model-agnostic explanations and the partial dependence plot. Results indicate that reducing the content of organic chlorine in municipal solid waste and inhibiting the deacon reaction are important methods for reducing PCDD/F emissions. The optimal operating parameters for the maximal reduction of PCDD/F emissions are 1,2,4-TrCBz < 0.098 ug/m³, fluoride > 0.452 mg/m³. As a whole, the E-BSVR method can be used as a reliable and accurate approach for the prediction and reduction of PCDD/F emissions.

Emissions of PAHs, PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, chlorophenols and chlorobenzenes from municipal waste incinerator cofiring industrial waste

Concentrations and distributions of PAHs and chlorinated aromatic compounds including PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, chlorophenols (CPs), and chlorobenzenes (CBz) in the municipal waste incinerator are investigated to characterize their formation and emission via intensive stack sampling. In addition, the toxicity of fly ash contribution by PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs is evaluated in this study. The results reveal that concentrations of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in flue gas are significantly lower than those of CPs, CBz, and PAHs. Additionally, the removal efficiencies of PAHs and chlorinated aromatic compounds achieved with existing air pollution control devices are evaluated, indicating that the removal efficiencies achieved with activated carbon injection + baghouse (95-99%) are higher than those with semi-dry scrubber (SDS). Besides, PCDD/Fs and PCBs TEQ concentrations in SDS and BH ashes are within 1.61-2.66 WHO-TEQ/g and 0.09-0.19 WHO-TEQ/g, respectively. Furthermore, the calculated mass flow rates suggest that the input rate of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs of SDS are 60.24 mg/h and 59.74 mg/h, respectively. The mass flow rates of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs after SDS in flue gas are 32.47 mg/h and 49.73 mg/h, respectively. However, the discharge rates of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs from SDS are 120.60 mg/h and 27.05 mg/h, respectively, indicating that PCDD/Fs are significantly formed within the SDS. PCDD/Fs formation is attributed to the operating temperature of SDS (240 ± 11.5 °C), which is within the temperature window for de novo synthesis. Thus, operating parameters of the APCDs should be optimized to reduce the formation of PAHs and chlorinated aromatic pollutants from MWI.

Stable and Effective Online Monitoring and Feedback Control of PCDD/F during Municipal Waste Incineration

For the long-term operation of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI), online monitoring and feedback control of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) can be used to control the emissions to national or regional standards. In this study, 500 PCDD/F samples were determined by thermal desorption gas chromatography coupled to tunable-laser ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TD-GC-TLI-TOFMS) for 168 h. PCDD/F emissions range from 0.01 ng I-TEQ/Nm³ to 2.37 ng I-TEQ/Nm³, with 44% of values below 0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm³ (the national standard). In addition, the temperature of the furnace outlet, bed pressure, and oxygen content are considered as key operating parameters among the 13 operating parameters comprising four temperature parameters, four pressure parameters, four flow parameters, and oxygen content. More specifically, maintaining the furnace outlet temperature to be higher than 800 °C, or bed pressure higher than 13 kPa, or the oxygen content stably and above 10% are effective methods for reducing PCDD/F emissions. According to the analysis of the Pearson coefficients and maximal information coefficients, there is no significant correlation between operating parameters and PCDD/F I-TEQ. Only when there is a significant change in one of these factors will the PCDD/F emissions also change accordingly. The feedback control of PCDD/F emissions is realized by adjusting the furnace outlet temperature, bed temperature, and bed pressure to control the PCDD/F to be less than 0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm³.

Bagging based ensemble learning approaches for modeling the emission of PCDD/Fs from municipal solid waste incinerators

The conventional method for determining polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) emission concentrations from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) is accurate but complex, costly, and time-consuming. In this study, we utilized machine learning approaches to model International Toxic Equivalent Quality (I-TEQ) values of PCDD/Fs through chlorobenzene (CBz). Sampled data from a MSWI with a grate furnace and three MSWIs with fluidized bed furnaces were randomly divided into the training and test set. A two-step data preprocessing consists of Box-Cox transformation and standardization was applied to improve the model performances. The models including artificial neural network (ANN) and decision tree (DT). With the help of bagging, ANN and DT were stacked into bagging-based ensemble neural networks (BGNN) and random forest (RF) to improve the accuracy and robustness. BGNN was proved to be the best model with the relatively good perfomance in the test set. The Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) method was employed to improve the interpretability of BGNN. The results show that 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene (TrCBz), 1,4-dichlorobenzene (DiCBz), 1,2,4-TrCBz, and 1,3-DiCBz make positive contributions to I-TEQ values. Employing machine learning models, particularly BGNN, can be an effective method to determine the emission of PCDD/Fs within a wide range of I-TEQ values and in multiple MSWIs with strong generalization ability. It is helpful to realize the on-line measurement and controlling of PCDD/Fs emission.

Online predicting PCDD/F emission by formation pathway identification clustering and Box-Cox Transformation

The composition of the fuel and operational conditions change dramatically under the long-term operation of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI). Therefore, it is difficult to provide effective rapid feedback to control PCDD/F emissions, presenting as International Toxic Equivalent Quantity (I-TEQ). To address this problem, a PCDD/F emission prediction method is developed, based on formation pathway identification clustering (FPIC) and Box-Cox transformation (BCT). Meanwhile, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene is measured by the thermal desorption gas chromatography coupled to tunable-laser ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TD-GC-TLI-TOFMS). In the method, FPIC includes de novo synthesis, chlorobenzene(CBz)-route synthesis, chlorophenol (CP)-route synthesis, and the chlorination of dibenzofuran (DD) or dibenzodioxin (DF). The PCDD/F emission data was divided into Cluster 1 (I-TEQ>0.1 ng/Nm³) and Cluster 2 (I-TEQ<0.1 ng/Nm³) by FPIC due to PCDD/F in Cluster 1 main from CP-route and PCDD/F in Cluster 2 main from de novo synthesis and CBz-route synthesis. Also, the BCT was used to transform the I-TEQ and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene data and to construct effective models. The accurate and precise PCDD/F emissions are predicted with the vast majority of error percentage within [ -40%, 40% ], and errors within [ -0.126, 0.016 ] I-TEQ (ng/Nm³). The absolute value of the relative difference between predicted I-TEQ and measured I-TEQ (|RD|) of the linear model constructed by the method has a significant reduction to 20.28%. FPIC and BCT can be used as an effective method to online predict PCDD/F emission in long-term operation thereby allowing the rapid operational feedback to control PCDD/F emission from the incinerator.

Treatment of simulated textile sludge using the Fenton/Cl- system: The roles of chlorine radicals and superoxide anions on PAHs removal

The main content of this work is to investigate the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs: phenanthrene, anthracene, and fluoranthene) from simulated sludge solid phase employing an Fenton/Cl^- system under various Cl^- contents and pH values. The steady-state concentrations of the hydroxyl, chlorine, and dichloride anion radicals ([·OH]_ss, [·Cl]_ss, and [Cl₂^·-]_ss) in heterogeneous system were first measured using tert-butanol, nitrobenzene, and benzoic acid. The outcomes exhibited that increasing the Cl^- content from 50 to 2000 mg/L (pH = 3.0) or raising the pH from 3.0 to 5.0 (1000 mg/L Cl^-) caused [·OH]_ss to continuously decrease and [Cl₂^·-]_ss and the concentration of superoxide anions (HO₂·/O₂^·-) to continuously increase. When the pH was 3.0 and the Cl^- concentration was 1000 mg/L, [·Cl]_ss had a maximum value of 9.27 × 10^-14 M. Combining the results of PAH removal, radical quenching, and product analysis, it was found that ·Cl in the Fenton/Cl^- system promoted the oxidative degradation of phenanthrene without forming chlorination byproducts. Furthermore, HO₂·/O₂^·- was helpful in removing anthracene and fluoranthene. Under the environment of high Cl^- content (≥1000 mg/L), PAHs could be removed more effectively by using HO₂·/O₂^·-. This investigation underpins further study on the regulation of reactive species and the efficient degradation of target organic matter in Fenton/Cl^- system, and provides a basis for studying the formation of chlorinated or toxic byproducts in the process of treating textile dyeing sludge by Fenton.

Formation of DF, PCDD/Fs and EPFRs from 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene over metal oxide/silica surface

The formation of dibenzofuran (DF), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) from 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene (1,2,3-TrCBz) over metal oxide / silica surface were investigated using a tubular furnace. PCDD/Fs increased exponentially from 250 to 550 °C over copper oxide / silica surface and PCDD/Fs had the maximum growth from 400 to 450 °C. The ratio of PCDD / PCDF was much less than 1, especially when the temperature raised from 450 to 550 °C. Pentachlorianated dibenzo-p-furan (PeCDF) dominated among the homologues, which contributed 45-61% to the total PCDD/Fs. Two peaks of the yield of DF occurred at 400 °C and 500 °C respectively. Furthermore, the oxygen contents have different effects for PCDD and PCDF formation, and low oxygen could promote PCDD production, especially for tetrachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). More PCDF were formed on the oxygen rich condition, indicating that the oxygen promoted the chlorination of DF. Iron oxides are better than copper oxides to catalyze the formation of PCDD/Fs from 1,2,3-TrCBzs at 350 °C, especially for PCDF. The major EPFRs on the catalysts were formed with g values in the range of 2.0040 to 2.0049, which were phenoxy radicals and semiquinone occurred with higher g value of 2.0075 when the temperature increased to 550 °C, and more EPFRs were produced with the temperature increasing. The addition of iron oxides reduced the spins concentrations of oxygen-centered radicals but increase the spins concentrations of signals with lower g values. The different possible formation pathways of PCDD and PCDF from 1,2,3-TrCBz over metal oxide surface were also proposed.

Atline measurement of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran International Toxic Equivalent Quantity prediction in the stack gas

A home-made analytical instrument based on thermal desorption gas chromatography coupled to resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TD-GC-REMPI-TOFMS) was applied for atline measurement of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene for the prediction of polychlorinated dibenzodioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) concentrations in the stack gas of a municipal solid waste incinerator (400 ton/day). Conventional high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectroscopy (HRGC/HRMS) measurements for the determination of PCDD/F concentrations were performed to compare with TD-GC-REMPI-TOFMS measurements. 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene correlated with I-TEQ at r = 0.867, 0.953 and 0.944 in unstable, stable and integrated conditions. The correlation was independent of the facility operating conditions observed in this study. Using a linear model to predict I-TEQ by 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene over the test, the average of the relative difference between predicted and measured I-TEQ was 18.9%. 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene measured by TD-GC-REMPI-TOFMS can be used as a robust indicator of I-TEQ in stack gas.

Concentrations, spatial distributions, and congener profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans around original plastic solid waste recovery sites in China

The concentrations, profiles, and spatial distributions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in soil and sediment samples from several typical plastic solid waste (PSW) recovery sites (particularly from areas in which PSW is burned openly) in China were investigated. The results showed that burning PSW directly influenced PCDD/F concentrations immediately around the burning area. All of the samples in which soil contained black burning residue, collected from immediately around burning areas, had PCDD/F concentrations (mean 21708 ng kg^-1) and toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations (mean 2140 ng I-TEQ kg^-1 or 1877 ng WHO₂₀₀₆-TEQ kg^-1) more than 100 times higher than the concentrations in samples collected away from burning areas (mean 222 ng kg^-1, 8.75 ng I-TEQ kg^-1, 7.96 ng WHO₂₀₀₆-TEQ kg^-1). Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis indicated that the PCDD/F concentrations in seven soil samples from near PSW burning areas were influenced by PSW burning but that the PCDD/Fs in these soil samples may have had other or multiple sources. PCDD/F distributions at PSW recovery sites have been investigated in few previous studies. The results presented here indicate that appropriate measures should be taken to decrease the ecological risks posed by PSW recovery and to prevent, control, and remediate PCDD/F and other chemical contamination caused by PSW recovery.
