Elucidating Nonlinear Stress Relaxation in Transient Networks through Two-Dimensional Rheo-Optics

This study aims to elucidate the origin of nonlinear stress relaxation behaviors in transient networks using a systematically controlled model system consisting of the tetra-armed polyethylene glycols (Tetra-PEG slime) in conjunction with two-dimensional rheo-optics observations. Transient networks, characterized by their temporary cross-links, are extensively utilized in self-healing and robust materials. However, the molecular mechanisms governing their viscoelastic responses to large deformations have remained elusive. This is primarily due to the heterogeneous structures inherent in conventional transient networks and a scarcity of detailed experimental evaluations. By employing Tetra-PEG slime, which is distinguished by its regular structure with uniform strand lengths and functionalities, and the polarization imaging method, we overcome these obstacles. Our results reveal that the damping phenomena observed under large step strains arise from spatially heterogeneous relaxation, predominantly driven by network strand pullout. These insights lay a solid foundation for understanding the intricate rheological properties of transient networks.

Wormlike micellar solutions formed by an anionic surfactant and a cationic surfactant with two head groups

Innovation in the molecular structure of surfactants is important for the preparation of soft materials with novel properties. In this study, we synthesized a cationic surfactant, N1,N1,N1,N1,N3,N3,N3-pentamethyl-N3-(3-stearamidopropyl)propane-1,3-diammonium bromide, hereafter referred to as C18-DQA. Unlike conventional cationic surfactants, C18-DQA contains two quaternary ammonium head groups and a long-saturated alkyl chain equal to a chain length of 21 carbon atoms. C18-DQA exhibits a low Krafft point of ∼0 °C and a water solubility >1000 mM at 25 °C. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of C18-DQA was determined to be 0.59 mM using the Nile red method. C18-DQA was mixed with sodium laurate (SL) at different molar ratios to produce transparent solutions with excellent viscoelasticity over a wide concentration range. The 1 : 1.5 molar ratio C18-DQA/SL mixed solutions exhibited gel-like behavior for a total surfactant concentration of 2.88 wt% (75 mM). The solution with a total surfactant concentration of 300 mM (120 mM C18-DQA and 180 mM SL) achieved a maximum zero-shear viscosity (η0) of 4224 Pa s. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed the formation of extremely long wormlike micelles, with a cross-sectional diameter of 5 nm and contour length >3 μm, in the mixed solutions. C18-DQA and SL molecules were drawn close by electrostatic attractions, leading to a suitable molecular geometry for the extensive growth of wormlike micelles. This work will act as an important reference for the future preparation of highly viscoelastic solutions by mixing cationic and anionic surfactants. The proposed system is also expected to have potential applications in cosmetic formulations, home care products, and oilfield fracturing fluids.

Pickering Emulsions and Viscoelastic Solutions Constructed by a Rosin-Based CO2-Responsive Surfactant

Designing stimulus-switch viscoelastic solutions and Pickering emulsions with reversible CO2-responsive behavior remains a challenge. A rosin-based CO2-responsive surfactant, N-cetyl-maleimidepimaric acid N,N-dimethylenediamide (C16MPAN), was synthesized and used to prepare CO2-triggered viscoelastic solutions and Pickering emulsions. This surfactant exhibited excellent CO2-responsive performance in water and formed a viscoelastic solution. This viscoelastic system was investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), rheology, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cory-TEM). The shear viscosity of the system increased by 3-4 orders of magnitude after bubbling with CO2 and a large number of elongated, flexible, tubular wormlike micelles were observed. Further, Pickering emulsions were prepared by C16MPAN+ synergistically with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), whose stability and switchability were investigated via adsorption isotherm, droplet size, contact angle, and macroscopic photographs. C16MPAN+ was adsorbed with CNCs to form mechanical barriers at the oil-water interface, making the emulsion stable for at least three months, and desorption from CNCs enabled emulsion breaking. The cycle could be switched reversibly multiple times and the particle size distribution of emulsion was basically the same. This work enriches the application of biomass resources in intelligent responsive materials.

Ecofriendly Viscoelastic Solutions Formed from a Recyclable Rosin-Based Amine Oxide Surfactant

Innovations in molecular structures formed using bioresources are efficient means to prepare surfactant aggregates with unique properties. Here, a rosin-based amine oxide surfactant (R-11-3-AO) containing large hydrophobic groups was synthesized from rosin derivatives, namely, dehydroabietic acid and long-chain amino acids. Cryo-transmission electron microscopy showed that R-11-3-AO molecules formed extremely long wormlike micelles with a cross-sectional diameter of 4-5 nm at a concentration of approximately 7 mmol·L^-1. A gel-like system was obtained at approximately 30 mmol·L^-1 due to the dense entanglement of the wormlike micelles. The solutions also exhibited unique shear thickening behavior at a shear rate of approximately 10 s^-1 even at high concentrations. The large hydrophobic group contained in R-11-3-AO is the origin of the strong van der Waals interactions between the surfactant molecules, resulting in the rapid growth of wormlike micelles. This rosin-based surfactant is the first recoverable amine oxide surfactant from solutions through the salting-out effect with high recovery rates. This work demonstrates the unique capabilities of rosin-based surfactants for forming wormlike micelles and provides opportunities for the development of surfactant recovery technologies.

Strain-induced orientation facilitates the fabrication of highly stretchable and tough xylan-based hydrogel for strain sensors

Stretchable and tough polysaccharide-based functional hydrogels have gained popularity for various applications. However, it still remains a great challenge to simultaneously own satisfactory stretchability and toughness, particularly when incorporating renewable xylan to offer sustainability. Herein, we describe a novel stretchable and tough xylan-based conductive hydrogel utilizing the natural feature of rosin derivative. The effect of different compositions on the mechanical properties and the physicochemical properties of corresponding xylan-based hydrogels were systematically investigated. Owing to the multiple non-covalent interactions among different components to dissipate energies and the strain-induced orientation of rosin derivative during the stretching, the highest tensile strength, strain, and toughness of xylan-based hydrogels could reach 0.34 MPa, 2098.4 %, and 3.79 ± 0.95 MJ/m³, respectively. Furthermore, by incorporating MXene as the conductive fillers, the strength and toughness of hydrogels were further enhanced to 0.51 MPa and 5.95 ± 1.19 MJ/m³. Finally, the synthesized xylan-based hydrogels were able to serve as a reliable and sensitive strain sensor to monitor the movements of human beings. This study provides new insights to develop stretchable and tough conductive xylan-based hydrogel, especially utilizing the natural feature of bio-based resources.

Fabrication and evaluation of dodecyl imide maleopimaric acid glycidyl methacrylate ester modified silica with multiple retention mechanisms for reversed phase liquid chromatography

As green, less toxic, and abundant ligands with rich functional groups, natural products are widely used in synthesis of chromatographic stationary phases. In this work, dodecyl imide maleopimaric acid glycidyl methacrylate ester (C12-MPAGN) was prepared from maleopimaric acid through the imidization and ring-opening based esterification reaction. By using "thiol-ene" click chemistry, it was chemically bonded to the silica and (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (γ-MPS) was used as the coupling agent to obtain dodecyl imide maleopimaric acid glycidyl methacrylate ester bonded silica stationary phase (Sil-C12-MPAGN). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopies (SEM), and elemental analysis (EA) were utilized to verify that the Sil-C12-MPAGN stationary phase was successfully prepared with C12-MPAGN immobilized on the silica surface. In order to evaluate the chromatographic performance and retention mechanisms of the Sil-C12-MPAGN column and compared with C18 column, a variety of compounds were used, including stander mixture of Tanaka, alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenols and flavonoids. Based on these multiple interactions, including hydrophobic, hydrogen-bonding, and π-π interactions, high selectivity and superior separation performance were demonstrated by the Sil-C12-MPAGN column for probe molecules what had previously been mentioned. In addition, the quantitative determination of paclitaxel content in Yew bark extract was conducted with this column, which was found that the concentration was 83.67 mg/L, respectively. In short, the present study proposes a new strategy for introducing rosin to liquid chromatography with high selectivity and separation performance.

Fast and Reversible Photoresponsive Self-Assembly Behavior of Rosin-Based Amphiphilic Polymers

Designing stimulus-responsive amphiphilic polymers with a fast photoresponsive self-assembly behavior remains a challenge. Two series of rosin-terminated and azobenzene-terminated amphiphilic polymers (PAM_n and PMA_n) with fast and reversible photoresponsive properties were prepared using rosin-based azobenzene groups and polyethylene glycol, respectively. Under 5-10 s of UV irradiation, the polymers showed trans-to-cis isomerization and reached a photosteady state. For the PAM_n polymer, the absorbance of the absorption peak at 325 nm recovered to more than 95% of the initial value under visible light for 5-10 s, whereas that of the PMA_n polymer recovered completely. Notably, the PAM_n and PMA_n polymers initially self-assembled to vesicles or spherical micelles, and various morphological changes were achieved by manipulating UV irradiation time, with the initial morphology again recovered under dark conditions or visible-light irradiation. Remarkably, vesicles of the PAM₃₄ and PMA₃₄ polymers presented an intermediate open-vesicle state before being completely deformed under UV irradiation because of the existence of a π-π interaction. Finally, the ability of PAM₃₄ and PMA₃₄ polymer vesicles to perform the controlled release and reversible loading of a fluorescent probe was evaluated.

Molecular Design, Supramolecular Assembly, and Excellent Dye Adsorption Capacity of Natural Rigid Dehydroabietic Acid-Tailored Amide Organogelators

It is very appealing to synthesize functional soft materials from natural and abundant plant diterpenes because they have conformationally rigid and chiral properties. Herein, dehydroabietic-based monoamide (DA-1) and diamide (DA-2) were designed by introducing device interactions, π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding, with an aromatic group, C═O, and N-H. DA-1 and DA-2 can be gelled in a mixed solvent and a single solvent, respectively. Several novel supramolecular organic gels including highly entangled three-dimensional networks composed of rods or fibers were constructed. Interestingly, DA-2 forms a helical structure that is right-handed under the cooperative control of the solvent and the rigid structure of rosin. Gel formation was primarily driven by hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and van der Waals force. Combined with Gaussian calculation and X-ray diffraction (XRD), we established pack patterns for each system, revealing the roles played by rosin and amide groups. Moreover, the carbon tetrachloride gel of DA-2 can effectively remove Congo red in an aqueous solution, and the removal rate can reach 98.4%. This research explores an efficient organic gel for adsorbing Congo red dye with the secretions of pine trees.

Water-in-Oil Emulsion Gels Stabilized by a Low-Molecular Weight Organogelator Derived from Dehydroabietic Acid

High concentrations of surfactants or gelators are usually necessary to prepare emulsions gels with unusual physicochemical properties. This situation may be improved by innovating the aggregate morphology in systems. Herein, a rosin-based molecule is designed and synthesized using dehydroabietic acid as the starting material (denoted as R-Lys-R). The molecule acts as an effective organogelator and can gelate several hydrocarbon compounds with a minimum gelation concentration of 0.2% (w/v). Analysis using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and circular dichroism (CD) reveals that in n-decane, R-Lys-R forms left-handed helical fibers with a cross-sectional diameter of approximately 15 nm. The directional hydrogen bonding of the amide group is helpful to the formation of aggregates. At concentrations of R-Lys-R above 2%, water-in-oil emulsions are transformed into emulsion gels owing to the aptitude of R-Lys-R in gelating the oil phase. The concentrations of the emulsifier can be adjusted to obtain emulsion gels with different formulations. This work reveals the potential of rosin derivatives for the formation of small molecular weight organogels and provides a novel method for the utilization of natural resources in soft materials and home care products.

Tracking Wormlike Micelle Formation in Solution: Unique Insight through Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopic Study

Although worm-like micelles were invented 35 years ago, its formation pathway remains unclear. Inspired by the fact that a single molecular level experiment could provide meaningful and additional information, especially in a heterogeneous subpopulation, herein, we present a single molecular level study on the formation of wormlike micelles by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium salicylate (NaSal) in water. Our results indicated a coexistence of normal spherical micelles along with a big wormlike micelle in its formation path. More interestingly, we have two unique insights into the formation mechanism, which are inaccessible in ensemble averaged experiments: (i) at extremely low concentrations of the surfactant, [CTAB]/[NaSal] ∼ 0.06, the wormlike micelle attains the highest size; and (ii) the relative concentration of wormlike micelles is highest when [CTAB]/[NaSal] ∼ 2.

Novel Temperature-Responsive Rosin-Derived Supramolecular Hydrogels Constructed by New Semicircular Aggregates

A highly water-soluble rosin-based surfactant (C₁₄-MPA-Na) was synthesized. Novel temperature-responsive supramolecular hydrogels were further prepared using C₁₄-MPA-Na. The microstructure and the mechanical properties of the hydrogels were investigated. Unexpectedly, instead of the long one-dimensional structure, a new kind of twisted semicircular aggregate was formed in the hydrogels, which was rarely reported. Besides, the hydrogels possessed excellent shear-recovery properties. Upon heating to 40 °C, the hydrogels transformed into viscoelastic solutions, which were constructed by worm-like micelles. By adjusting the temperature, the hydrogels and the viscoelastic solutions could be freely transformed. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to further explore the possible self-assembly mechanism of C₁₄-MPA-Na. The curved alkane chain which partially overlapped with rosin's rigid skeleton became stretched when heated to 40 °C. The introduction of the rosin rigid skeleton endowed the supramolecular hydrogels with a novel microstructure and contributed to the development of strategies for the utilization of forest resources.

Gemini and Bicephalous Surfactants: A Review on Their Synthesis, Micelle Formation, and Uses

The use of surfactants in polymerization reactions is particularly important, mainly in emulsion polymerizations. Further, micelles from biocompatible surfactants find use in pharmaceutical dosage forms. This paper reviews recent developments in the synthesis of novel gemini and bicephalous surfactants, micelle formation, and their applications in polymer and nanoparticle synthesis, oil recovery, catalysis, corrosion, protein binding, and biomedical area, particularly in drug delivery.

Formation of asymmetric belt-like aggregates from a bio-based surfactant derived from dehydroabietic acid

The morphology and physicochemical properties of ordered molecular aggregates are closely related to surfactant molecules. Herein, a rosin-based amine oxide surfactant containing a large hydrophobic group (abbreviated R-10-AO) was synthesized from dehydroabietic acid, which is an important derivative of rosin. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) images and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) showed that at a concentration of ∼5 mM, R-10-AO molecules formed flexible nanobelts with a thickness of only 2-3 nm. The width of these nanobelts was 50-150 nm and the length was more than 1 μm. The formation of the stable nanobelts arose from the strong van der Waals forces of the bulky hydrophobic portions of R-10-AO in solution, facilitating the stability of the asymmetrical aggregates. Rheological tests showed that the formed nanobelts were thermodynamically stable. The entanglement of these nanobelts led to significant viscoelasticity of the solutions. The zero-shear viscosity (η₀) of the R-10-AO solution reached 10 Pa s at a concentration of 5 mM, which is much greater than that of most wormlike micellar solutions. This work provides the inspirations of preparing aggregates with novel properties using natural products.

Photoresponsive Viscoelastic Solutions Based on Chiral Wormlike Micelles in Mixed Solutions Containing an Amphiphile Derived from Rosin

A novel rosin-based photoresponsive anionic amphiphile, sodium N-azophenyl maleopimaric acid imide carboxylate (AzoMPCOONa), has been successfully synthesized. Its molecular structure was characterized by ¹H and ¹³C NMR and mass spectrometry (MS). The photoisomerization of AzoMPCOONa was evaluated by ultraviolet (UV)-visible spectrometry and ¹H NMR. The structure of AzoMPCOONa could be converted between the trans and cis isomers by irradiation with UV/visible light. Importantly, a fascinating photoresponsive viscoelastic solution was prepared by mixing AzoMPCOONa and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The properties of the photoresponsive viscoelastic solution were further investigated by rheology, circular dichroism (CD), and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). Initially, the AzoMPCOONa/CTAB system was a gel-like solution composed of entangled wormlike micelles possessing the right-handed chiral structure. After UV irradiation for 10 min, the gel-like solution transformed into a slightly viscous solution, its zero-shear viscosity dramatically reduced by 2 orders of magnitude, and the aggregates were converted into rod-like micelles and spherical micelles. In addition, the right-handed chiral structure of the aggregates disappeared. These dramatic changes in the viscosity and the aggregate structure can be attributed to the photoisomerization of the azobenzene group in AzoMPCOONa, which led to changes in the molecular geometry and the packing parameter of the AzoMPCOONa/CTAB system. Interestingly, the right-handed chiral structure of wormlike micelles also is photoresponsive. The results reveal the superiority of forest resources for preparing viscoelastic solutions.

Application of surfactants in papermaking industry and future development trend of green surfactants

In this work, the application of chemical surfactants, including cooking aids, detergents, surface sizing agents, and deinking agents as core components, is introduced in the wet end of pulping and papermaking. This method for the combined application of enzymes and surfactants has expanded, promoting technological updates and improving the effect of surfactants in practical applications. Finally, the potential substitution of green surfactants for chemical surfactants is discussed. The source, classification, and natural functions of green surfactants are introduced, including plant extracts, biobased surfactants, fermentation products, and woody biomass. These green surfactants have advantages over their chemically synthesized counterparts, such as their low toxicity and biodegradability. This article reviews the latest developments in the application of surfactants in different paper industry processes and extends the methods of use. Additionally, the application potential of green surfactants in the field of papermaking is discussed. The effect of sonication on the ion exchange constant, KXBr of CTABr/chlorobenzoates micellar systems

The ion exchange constant, KXBr (for the case of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTABr, in this study) is a method dependant characterization of ion exchange process by counterions, X and Br with different relative binding ratios. In this report, the ion exchange constant, KXBr values for micelle systems irradiated under 2 min of sonication at 120 W power using a probe sonicator with 1 cm tip were determined to be 85.2, 125.6 and 122.4 when X  = o-, m- and p-chlorobenzoates, respectively. The values were quantified using a semiempirical kinetic method coupled with Pseudophase Micellar model, and later compared to the same system in the absence of sonication. The sonication was found to amplify the KXBr values by ~ 13-fold for X  = o-chlorobenzoate and ~ 2.5-fold for X  = m- and p-chlorobenzoates. This is due to the improvement of ion exchange process by the oscillation of bubbles generated by acoustic cavitation. An active ion exchange process indicates better stabilization of the micelle aggregational structure by the penetration of the introduced counterions, X into the micelle Stern layer leading to the growth of the micelle. This is supported by the remarkable increase in the viscosity of the micelle system by > 7-fold for X  = o-chlorobenzoate and by > 2-folds for X  = m- and p-chlorobenzoates. Sonication was also found to induce maximum viscoelasticity at lower concentration ratio of [CTABr]:[X]. The ability of ultrasound to induce micelle growth and exhibiting viscoelasticity at lower concentration of counterionic additive will be very useful in technologies where viscoelastic solution is desired such as in oil drilling and centralized heating and cooling system.

Corrosion Inhibition of Mild Steel by Cetrimonium trans-4-Hydroxy Cinnamate: Entrapment and Delivery of the Anion Inhibitor through Speciation and Micellar Formation

Chemical inhibitors are widely used to protect metallic alloys from corrosion in aqueous environments. This Letter investigates the possible synergistic behavior of a quaternary ammonium carboxylate compound toward the development of a new system taking advantage of the surface activity of a known antimicrobial surfactant molecule, hexadecyl trimethylammonium cation, combined with a known organic corrosion inhibitor, the trans-4-hydroxy-cinnamate anion. Short-term potentiodynamic polarization (PP) studies combined with immersion in aqueous chloride solutions demonstrated the high inhibition efficiency of the combination of ions, and NMR pfg-diffusion measurements revealed micellar formation that was concentration- and pH-dependent. The NMR data suggest that speciation changes occur in the solution that correlate with enhanced corrosion inhibition efficiency at higher pH and at concentrations above the CMC of the compound. This new contribution may provide a rational molecular design toward delivering corrosion inhibitors to a metal surface through controlled speciation in solution.

Rosin-based chiral wormlike Micelles: Rheological behavior and its application in preparing ultrasmall gold nanoparticles

Innovations in surfactant structures are a feasible way to prepare unique molecular aggregates with interesting properties. Herein, taking dehydroabietic acid as the starting material, a new amine oxide surfactant, abbreviated as R-8-AO, was synthesized. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) images and circular dichroism (CD) spectra reveal that at suitable concentrations, R-8-AO molecules form rarely discovered right-handed chiral wormlike micelles, which have a cross-sectional diameter of 5-6 nm. The overlap concentration of R-8-AO is approximately 8 mM, above which the wormlike micelles began to entangle in solutions. Due to the strong van der Waals forces between R-8-AO molecules, the scaling law gives an exponent of 7.88, which is higher than the theory predicted value. Gold nanoparticles were synthesized in-situ by irradiating mixed solutions of HAuCl₄ and wormlike micelles formed by R-8-AO with UV light. These ultrasmall spherical gold nanoparticles, which are located at the surface of wormlike micelles, have a uniform particle size of 3 ± 1 nm, as observed by TEM. In addition, the gold nanoparticles form a worm-like morphology induced by the wormlike micelles, showing soft-aggregate-directed nanoparticle assembly. This work is first to reveal the effectiveness of preparing ultrasmall gold nanoparticles with new morphological wormlike micelles as soft templates. The resulting organic-inorganic hybrid aggregates are also expected to find applications in catalysis and electronic fields.

pH-Responsive Wormlike Micelles Formed by an Anionic Surfactant Derived from Rosin

A novel pH-responsive wormlike micellar viscoelastic solution was constructed by a rosin-based anionic surfactant (Na-MPA-AZO-Na) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The viscoelasticity, aggregate morphology, and pH-responsiveness of the pH-responsive wormlike micelles have been investigated through the method of rheology and cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy. Its corresponding mechanism has been studied using ¹H NMR and ¹H-¹H 2D NOESY HNMR. The zero-shear viscosity (η₀) of the wormlike micellar solution rapidly decreases by 3 orders of magnitude as the pH increases from 5.21 to 9.56. The viscoelastic fluids and water-like solutions can be converted by tuning the pH between 3.62 and 12.00, and the corresponding aggregates also transform between wormlike micelles and spherical micelles. In addition, the wormlike micellar cross-sectional diameter is approximately 10 nm, which is remarkably larger than that of the common wormlike micelles. The phenomenon can be attributed to the large steric volume of the rosin rigid skeleton. When the pH is 12.00, a "pseudo" Gemini surfactant is constructed by Na-MPA-AZO-Na and CTAB through the electrostatic interactions. Wormlike micelles also can be formed with the increasing concentrations. The η₀ of the wormlike micellar system shows strong dependence on concentration with an exponent of 9.6 (η₀ ∝ C^9.6). This work further promotes new applications of forest resources.

Supramolecular Hydrogels with Chiral Nanofibril Structures Formed from β-Cyclodextrin and a Rosin-Based Amino Acid Surfactant

The rational combination of natural molecules is expected to provide new soft material building blocks. Herein, a rosin-based amino acid surfactant was synthesized using dehydroabietic acid and l-serine as the starting materials (denoted as R-6-Ser). Supramolecular hydrogels were formed when β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was mixed with R-6-Ser at molar ratios of over 0.5:1 and above certain concentrations. The hydrogels were investigated using rheometry, small-angle X-ray scattering, CD spectroscopy, and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The β-CD associated with the isopropyl benzyl group of the dehydroabietic acid unit in R-6-Ser and formed R-6-Ser@β-CD complexes. The complexes and R-6-Ser self-assembled to form elongated right-handed rigid fibers with a diameter of approximately 7-8 nm, which were responsible for the elasticity of the hydrogels. This work demonstrated the feasibility of preparing supramolecular hydrogels from a diterpenoid-based surfactant and β-CD and provides a new means of utilizing the secretions of pine trees.

Study on the Surface Properties and Aggregation Behavior of Quaternary Ammonium Surfactants with Amide Bonds

A number of techniques, including conductivity, surface tension, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and ¹H-¹H 2D nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (¹H-¹H 2D NOESY), have been used to investigate the effect of amide bonds on the interfacial and assembly properties of a cationic surfactant, N-anilinoformylmethyl-N-cetyl-N,N-dimethyl ammonium chloride (AMC-C ₁₆ ), in aqueous solutions. The adsorption of AMC-C ₁₆ has been found to be much better than that of the conventional cationic surfactant, benzyl cetyldimethylammonium chloride (BAC-16) at the air/water interface and in solution. The surface tension measurements show the presence of two critical aggregation concentrations (CAC₁ and CAC₂) for AMC-C ₁₆ . The presence of a strong intermolecular hydrogen bond of AMC-C ₁₆ was confirmed by ¹H NMR and FT-TR. The molecular interactions of AMC-C ₁₆ were detected by ¹H-¹H 2D NOESY. The results show that the rigid group (phenyl) of AMC-C ₁₆ was partially overlapped with its alkyl chain in aqueous solution, and the possible aggregation behavior for AMC-C ₁₆ was proposed. The effects of an inorganic salt (NaCl) and an organic salt (C₆H₅COONa) to the aggregates of AMC-C ₁₆ have been discussed.

Fabrication of a β-cyclodextrin-based self-assembly containing a redox-responsive ferrocene

The current research involves fabrication of a redox-responsive self-assembly system based on a ferrocene (Fc)-containing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) derivative (βCD-EG-Fc). βCD-EG-Fc was synthesized, and its redox-sensitive self-assembly behavior was investigated using various techniques. On the basis of the intermolecular host-guest recognition between the β-CD group and the Fc moiety, βCD-EG-Fc primarily formed network-like structures and then vesicles following aging for a specified time. The formation of these structures was primarily driven by hydrogen bonding. Conversely, the oxidized molecules (βCD-EG-Fc⁺) self-assembled into cationic vesicles with the absence of host-guest complexation. Upon controlling the oxidation and reduction of Fc/Fc⁺, reversible aggregate transformation was achieved. The current study resulted in a deeper understanding of β-CD/Fc redox-responsive self-assemblies and contributed to the development of a single-component host-guest inclusion model.

Improving enzymatic hydrolysis of acid-pretreated bamboo residues using amphiphilic surfactant derived from dehydroabietic acid

In this work, amphiphilic surfactant was obtained using dehydroabietic acid from pine rosin and then pre-adsorbed with acid-pretreated bamboo residues (AP-BR) to block the residual lignin adsorption site, which is expected to improve its enzymatic digestibility. Results from cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) indicated amphiphilic surfactant with PEG with polymerization degree of 34 (D-34) aggregated to form worm-like micelles, which improved enzymatic hydrolysis yield of AP-BR from 24.3% to 71.9% by pre-adsorbing with 0.8 g/L. Amphiphilic surfactants pre-adsorbed on AP-BR could reduce hydrophobicity of AP-BR, adsorption affinity and adsorption capacity of lignin for cellulase from 0.51 L/g to 0.48-0.32 L/g, from 2.9 mL/mg to 1.8-1.4 mL/mg, and from 122.3 mg/g to 101.9-21.4 mg/g, respectively. These changed properties showed compelling positive contributions (R² > 0.9) for free enzymes in the supernatants and sequently for final enzymatic hydrolysis yield, which was caused by blocking non-productively hydrophobic adsorption between lignin and cellulase.

Advances in Rosin-Based Chemicals: The Latest Recipes, Applications and Future Trends

A comprehensive review of the publications about rosin-based chemicals has been compiled. Rosin, or colophony, is a natural, abundant, cheap and non-toxic raw material which can be easily modified to obtain numerous useful products, which makes it an excellent subject of innovative research, attracting growing interest in recent years. The last extensive review in this research area was published in 2008, so the current article contains the most promising, repeatable achievements in synthesis of rosin-derived chemicals, published in scientific literature from 2008 to 2018. The first part of the review includes low/medium molecule weight compounds: Especially intermediates, resins, monomers, curing agents, surfactants, medications and biocides. The second part is about macromolecules: mainly elastomers, polymers for biomedical applications, coatings, adhesives, surfactants, sorbents, organosilicons and polysaccharides. In conclusion, a critical evaluation of the publications in terms of data completeness has been carried out with an indication of the most promising directions of rosin-based chemicals development.

Rheological Behavior of Environmentally Friendly Viscoelastic Solutions Formed by a Rosin-Based Anionic Surfactant

It is of great significance to explore novel applications of renewable resources. In this study, a rosin-based anionic surfactant (abbreviated R-11-2-Na), which contains a large hydrophobic group of 30 carbon atoms, was synthesized. R-11-2-Na forms wormlike micelles in the presence of the equimolar organic salt choline chloride, endowing solutions with strong viscoelasticity. The wormlike micellar solutions were investigated using rheology, small-angle X-ray scattering, and freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy (FF-TEM) methods at 25 °C. Due to the strong van der Waals interactions caused by the large hydrophobic group contained in R-11-2-Na, the zero-shear viscosity (η₀) of solutions showed extremely strong dependence on the concentration with an exponent of 23.4. The cross-sectional diameter of the wormlike micelles in the present system was significantly larger than that of the wormlike micelles formed by surfactants containing conventional alkyl tails. This finding may be attributed to the steric hindrance brought by the bulky and rigid dehydroabietic acid unit in the hydrophobic part. The wormlike micelles also showed high tolerance to the organic salt concentration. The present study reveals the notable qualities of rosin-based derivatives in forming complex fluids and facilitates new utilizations of forest resources.

CO2-Responsive Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by a Bio-based Rigid Surfactant with Nanosilica

A novel CO₂-responsive surfactant, maleopimaric acid glycidyl methacrylate ester 3-(dimethylamino)propylamine imide (MPAGN), based on sustainable resource of rosin was synthesized and used to prepare a kind of CO₂-responsive Pickering emulsions with nanosilica. MPAGN can be reversibly responsive to CO₂ and N₂ between active cationic (MPAGNH⁺) and inactive nonionic (MPAGN), leading to adsorb on or desorb from the surface of nanosilica, then stabilize or break emulsion. CO₂-responsive behavior of MPAGN was verified by cycle change of pH and conductivity with bubbling CO₂ and N₂ alternately. The type of adsorption of MPAGNH⁺ at the particle-water interface was explained according to the adsorption isotherms. The mechanisms of stabilization, destabilization, and restabilization of Pickering emulsion were analyzed according to zeta potentials and droplet size. This Pickering emulsion can be reversible between stable and unstable by bubbling CO₂ and N₂ alternately. Moreover, this emulsifier can be recycled when new oil was added after removing the initial oil. Therefore, it not only has economic benefits but also has an environmentally friendly property.

Reversible dispersion and precipitation of single-walled carbon nanotubes using a pH-responsive rigid surfactant

Sonication is not required to re-disperse the precipitated SWNTs in a pH-responsive SWNTs dispersion using a rigid surfactant.
