Plant-mediated synthesis of Mn3O4nanoparticles: challenges and applications

This review focuses on the green synthesis methods, challenges, and applications of manganese oxide (Mn3O4) nanoparticles investigated in the past five years. Mn3O4nanoparticles offer some unique properties that are attributed in part to the presence of mixed oxidation states of manganese (i.e. +2 and +3) in the particle, which can be utilized in a wide range of redox-sensitive applications, such as in developing supercapacitive energy storage materials. In addition, the green synthesis of Mn3O4nanoparticles through plant extracts has potential uses in sustainable nanotechnology. Various plant extract-mediated synthesis techniques for Mn3O4nanoparticles have been investigated and presented. By comparing the size and structure of the synthesized Mn3O4nanoparticles, we have observed a consistent pattern of obtaining spherical particles with a size ranging from 16 to 50 nm. The morphology of the generated Mn3O4nanoparticles can be influenced by the annealing temperature and the composition of the plant extract used during the nanoparticle synthesis. Additionally, numerous applications for the greenly produced Mn3O4nanoparticles have been demonstrated. Mn3O4nanoparticles derived from plant extracts have been found to possess antimicrobial properties, supercapacitive and electrochemical capabilities, and excellent pollutant degradation efficiency. However, the magnetic properties of these nanoparticles synthesized by plant extracts are yet to be explored for potential biomedical applications. Finally, challenges to existing synthetic methods and future perspectives on the potential applications of these green synthesized Mn3O4nanoparticles are highlighted.

Inorganic nanoparticle-cored dendrimers for biomedical applications: A review

Hybrid nanostructures exhibit a synergistic combination of features derived from their individual components, showcasing novel characteristics resulting from their distinctive structure and chemical/physical properties. Surface modifiers play a pivotal role in shaping INPs' primary attributes, influencing their physicochemical properties, stability, and functional applications. Among these modifiers, dendrimers have gained attention as highly effective multifunctional agents for INPs, owing to their unique structural qualities, dendritic effects, and physicochemical properties. Dendrimers can be seamlessly integrated with diverse inorganic nanostructures, including metal NPs, carbon nanostructures, silica NPs, and QDs. Two viable approaches to achieving this integration involve either growing or grafting dendrimers, resulting in inorganic nanostructure-cored dendrimers. The initial step involves functionalizing the nanostructures' surface, followed by the generation of dendrimers through stepwise growth or attachment of pre-synthesized dendrimer branches. This hybridization imparts superior qualities to the resulting structure, including biocompatibility, solubility, high cargo loading capacity, and substantial functionalization potential. Combining the unique properties of dendrimers with those of the inorganic nanostructure cores creates a multifunctional system suitable for diverse applications such as theranostics, bio-sensing, component isolation, chemotherapy, and cargo-carrying applications. This review summarizes the recent developments, with a specific focus on the last five years, within the realm of dendrimers. It delves into their role as modifiers of INPs and explores the potential applications of INP-cored dendrimers in the biomedical applications.

Nanoremediation strategies to address environmental problems

A rapid rise in population, extensive anthropogenic activities including agricultural practices, up-scaled industrialization, massive deforestation, etc. are the leading causes of environmental degradation. Such uncontrolled and unabated practices have affected the quality of environment (water, soil, and air) synergistically by accumulating huge quantities of organic and inorganic pollutants in it. Environmental contamination is posing a threat to the existing life on the Earth, therefore, demands the development of sustainable environmental remediation approaches. The conventional physiochemical remediation approaches are laborious, expensive, and time-consuming. In this regard, nanoremediation has emerged as an innovative, rapid, economical, sustainable, and reliable approach to remediate various environmental pollutants and minimize or attenuate the risks associated with them. Owing to their unique properties such as high surface area to volume ratio, enhanced reactivity, tunable physical parameters, versatility, etc. nanoscale objects have gained attention in environmental clean-up practices. The current review highlights the role of nanoscale objects in the remediation of environmental contaminants to minimize their impact on human, plant, and animal health; and air, water, and soil quality. The aim of the review is to provide information about the applications of nanoscale objects in dye degradation, wastewater management, heavy metal and crude oil remediation, and mitigation of gaseous pollutants including greenhouse gases.

Interplay between Nanoparticles and Phosphorus Dendrimers, and Their Properties

This review presents the state of the art of interactions between two different families of nanoobjects: nanoparticles-mainly metal nanoparticles, and dendrimers-mainly phosphorhydrazone dendrimers (or dendrons). The review firstly presents the encapsulation/protection of existing nanoparticles (organic or metallic) by phosphorus-based dendrimers and dendrons. In the second part, several methods for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, thanks to the dendrimer that acts as a template, are presented. The properties of the associations between dendrimers and nanoparticles are emphasized throughout the review. These properties mainly concern the elaboration of diverse types of hybrid materials, some of them being used as sensitive chemosensors or biosensors. Several examples concerning catalysis are also given, displaying in particular the efficient recovery and reuse of the catalytic entities.

1,4-α-Glucosidase from Fusarium solani for Controllable Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and Their Multifunctional Applications

In the study, monodispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with an average diameter of 9.57 nm were efficiently and controllably biosynthesized by a reductase from Fusarium solani DO7 only in the presence of β-NADPH and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The reductase responsible for AgNP formation in F. solani DO7 was further confirmed as 1,4-α-glucosidase. Meanwhile, based on the debate on the antibacterial mechanism of AgNPs, this study elucidated in further depth that antibacterial action of AgNPs was achieved by absorbing to the cell membrane and destabilizing the membrane, leading to cell death. Moreover, AgNPs could accelerate the catalytic reaction of 4-nitroaniline, and 86.9% of 4-nitroaniline was converted to p-phenylene diamine in only 20 min by AgNPs of controllable size and morphology. Our study highlights a simple, green, and cost-effective process for biosynthesizing AgNPs with uniform sizes and excellent antibacterial activity and catalytic reduction of 4-nitroaniline.

Synthesis of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-2-acrylamido methylpropane sulfonic acid) hydrogel containing copper and nickel nanoparticles with easy recycling and efficient catalytic potential

Poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-2-acrylamido methyl propane sulfonic acid) hydrogel was prepared and used as matrix for the fabrication of nickel and copper nanoparticles. Nickel and copper nanoparticles were fabricated via in situ reduction of Ni (II) and Cu (II) ions within the hydrogel matrix. The manufactured hydrogel and its corresponding composites with Ni and Cu nanoparticles were characterized by FTIR, XRD, EDX, TEM, and TGA. Thermal stability of hydrogel was found to be increased upon fabricating with metal nanoparticles. The hydrogel showed ability to absorb water 63 times of its weight in dried form. The Ni and Cu nanoparticles were observed to be well dispersed, spherical in shape and most of them were having diameters in the range of 12.5 to 38.8 nm and 58 to 102 nm, respectively. The as-prepared hydrogel-nickel and hydrogel-Cu nanocomposite were used as catalysts for the reduction of a toxic pollutant 4-nitrophenol. At 25 °C, the reduction of 4-NP was found to proceed with apparent rate constant (k app) of 0.107 and 0.122 min−1 in the presence of composite containing Ni and Cu nanoparticles, respectively. However, k app was increased with corresponding increase in temperature and its maximum value was found to be 0.815 min−1 at 88 °C with catalyst containing Ni nanoparticles. The formation of well dispersed Ni and Cu nanoparticles in the prepared hydrogel reflected that this hydrogel system can act as efficient stabilizing agent along with acting as a reactor medium. Recycling potential of catalysts was studied for five successive cycles.

Dendrimer-based magneto-plasmonic nanosorbents for water quality monitoring using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

In this work, we report the synthesis of magneto-plasmonic dendrimer-based nanosorbents containing Au nanostars and we demonstrate that they can be used as versatile optical sensors for the detection of pesticides in spiked water samples. The magnetic hybrid nanoparticles were obtained by conjugating silica-functionalized G5-NH₂ PAMAM dendrimers to silica-coated magnetite cores. The resulting magnetic-PAMAM conjugates were then used to reduce and sequester Au seeds for the subsequent in situ growth of Au nanostars. The dendrimer-based magneto-plasmonic substrates containing the Au anisotropic nanophases were then investigated regarding their ability to monitor water quality through surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. As a proof-of-concept, the ensuing multifunctional materials were investigated as SERS probing systems to detect dithiocarbamate pesticides (ziram and thiram) dissolved in water samples. It was observed that the magneto-plasmonic hybrid materials enhance the Raman signal of these pesticides under variable operational conditions, suggesting the versatility of these systems for water quality monitoring. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the SERS data was accomplished to predict the adsorption profile of the dithiocarbamate pesticides to the Au surface.

Significance of Capping Agents of Colloidal Nanoparticles from the Perspective of Drug and Gene Delivery, Bioimaging, and Biosensing: An Insight

The over-growth and coagulation of nanoparticles is prevented using capping agents by the production of stearic effect that plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the interface. This strategy of coating the nanoparticles’ surface with capping agents is an emerging trend in assembling multipurpose nanoparticles that is beneficial for improving their physicochemical and biological behavior. The enhancement of reactivity and negligible toxicity is the outcome. In this review article, an attempt has been made to introduce the significance of different capping agents in the preparation of nanoparticles. Most importantly, we have highlighted the recent progress, existing roadblocks, and upcoming opportunities of using surface modified nanoparticles in nanomedicine from the drug and gene delivery, bioimaging, and biosensing perspectives.

Enzyme-assisted metal nanoparticles etching based plasmonic ELISA: Progress and insights

The unique size and shape tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of the noble metal nanoparticle have been extensively exploited to realize a variety of enzyme-based optical biosensors. Although approaches like metal film deposition, nanoparticle aggregation, and synthesis & growth of metal nanoparticles are quite useful, metal nanoparticle etching-based biosensors offer greater sensitivity, selectivity, and stability against various environmental factors which makes this strategy easy to use for field applications. This review discusses the current state-of-art of plasmonic nanoparticle etching-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) realized for visual detection of various analytes. The naked eye detection, i.e. without any optical readout device, is the additional advantage of this sensing approach that reduces the analysis cost significantly making it feasible under resource-constrained settings. This review paper provides deeper insights into biocatalytic etching mechanisms of various plasmonic nanoparticles resulting in vivid color change as a function of analyte concentration. Although nanoparticle etching-based ELISA has huge potential, steps need to be taken to realize a point-of-care (POC) nanodiagnostic before its translation to a commercial technique or product that can be achieved in near future by integrating it with microfluidics technology and other technological avenues.

Recent progress in nanomaterial-functionalized membranes for removal of pollutants

Membrane technology has gained tremendous attention for removing pollutants from wastewater, mainly due to their affordable capital cost, miniature equipment size, low energy consumption, and high efficiency even for the pollutants present in lower concentrations. In this paper, we review the literature to summarize the progress of nanomaterial-modified membranes for wastewater treatment applications. Introduction of nanomaterial in the polymeric matrix influences membrane properties such as surface roughness, hydrophobicity, porosity, and fouling resistance. This review also covers the importance of functionalization strategies to prepare thin-film nanocomposite hybrid membranes and their effect on eliminating pollutants. Systematic discussion regarding the impact of the nanomaterials incorporated within membrane, toward the recovery of various pollutants such as metal ions, organic compounds, dyes, and microbes. Successful examples are provided to show the potential of nanomaterial-functionalized membranes for regeneration of wastewater. In the end, future prospects are discussed to develop nanomaterial-based membrane technology.

Fabrication of a magnetic nanocarrier for doxorubicin delivery based on hyperbranched polyglycerol and carboxymethyl cellulose: An investigation on the effect of borax cross-linker on pH-sensitivity

A new core-shell pH-responsive nanocarrier was prepared based on magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) core. Magnetic nanoparticles were first modified with hyperbranched polyglycerol as the first shell. Then the magnetic core was decorated with doxorubicin anticancer drug (DOX) and covered with PEGylated carboxymethylcellulose as the second shell. Borax was used to partially cross-link organic shells in order to evaluate drug loading content and pH-sensitivity. The structure of nanocarrier, organic shell loadings, magnetic responsibility, morphology, size, dispersibility, and drug loading content were investigated by IR, NMR, TG, VSM, XRD, DLS, HR-TEM and UV-Vis analyses. In vitro release investigations demonstrated that the use of borax as cross-linker between organic shells make the nanocarrier highly sensitive to pH so that more that 70% of DOX is released in acidic pH. A reverse pH-sensitivity was observed for the nanocarrier without borax cross-linker. The MTT assay determined that the nanocarrier exhibited excellent biocompatibility toward normal cells (HEK-293) and high toxicity against cancerous cells (HeLa). The nanocarrier also showed high hemocompatibility. Cellular uptake revealed high ability of nanocarrier toward HeLa cells comparable with free DOX. The results also suggested that low concentration of nanocarrier has a great potential for use as contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Cationic amphiphilic dendrons with effective antibacterial performance

Bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance have become a global healthcare crisis. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of cationic amphiphilic dendrons with cationic dendrons and hydrophobic alkyl chains for potential antibacterial applications. Our results showed that the antimicrobial activities of the cationic amphiphilic dendrons were highly dependent upon the length of the hydrophobic alkyl chain, whereas the number of cationic charges was less important. Among these cationic amphiphilic dendrons, a prime candidate was identified, which possessed excellent antimicrobial activity against various pathogens (minimum inhibitory concentrations of 9, 3, and 3 μg mL^-1 for Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, respectively). Scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy analyses showed that it could disrupt the integrity of a pathogen's membrane, leading to cell lysis and death. In addition, in vitro bacteria-killing kinetics showed that it had rapid bactericidal efficiency. It also had excellent antimicrobial activities against MRSA in vivo and promoted wound healing. In general, the synthesized cationic amphiphilic dendrons, which exhibited rapid and broad-spectrum bactericidal activity, may have great potential in antimicrobial applications.

DNA aptamer-based dual-responsive nanoplatform for targeted MRI and combination therapy for cancer

Accurate drug delivery is a common topic, and it has always been an aim that scientists strive to achieve. To address this need, multifunctional and stimulus-sensitive nanoplatforms have attracted significant attention. Here we fabricated a glutathione (GSH) and adenosine-5′-triphosphate (ATP) dual-sensitive nanoplatform for controlled drug release and activatable MRI of tumors based on DNA aptamer and manganese dioxide (MnO₂) nanosheets. Cleverly utilizing the DNA tunability, AS1411 aptamer which binds nucleolin, a protein specifically expressed on tumor-associated endothelial cells, was designed with ATP aptamer and its cDNA to load the anticancer drug, doxorubicin (Dox). The formed DNA-Dox complex was delivered to the tumor region with the help of MnO₂ nanosheets and AS1411 aptamer. Then, the on-demand drug release in tumor cells was realized with the co-effect of the ATP aptamer and GSH reduction. It was found that without the structure of the MnO₂ nanosheets being broken by GSH, Dox almost could not be released even in the presence of ATP. Similarly, without ATP, Dox was still maintained in the duplex even with GSH. Further combining the MRI ability and chemodynamic therapy of the produced Mn²⁺, an improved effect of the inhibition of tumor growth and imaging was achieved. Our designed DNA aptamer-based dual-responsive nanoplatform can realize the targeted drug delivery and MRI of breast tumor cells both in vitro and in vivo.

Cotton Fabric Modified with a PAMAM Dendrimer with Encapsulated Copper Nanoparticles: Antimicrobial Activity

A new methodology for modifying textile materials with dendrimers containing nanoparticles was developed. This involved a combination of eosin Y and N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) for reducing the copper ions in the dendrimer complex by enabling a photochemical reaction under visible light and ambient conditions. The conversion of copper ions into nanoparticles was monitored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by performing colorimetric, fluorescence, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies. Regardless of the concentration of the photoinitiator eosin Y, it discolored completely upon illumination. Three types of cotton fabrics were compared as antimicrobial materials against Bacillus cereus. One of the fabrics was dyed with a first-generation PAMAM dendrimer which had been functionalized with eight 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophores. Another fabric was dyed with a dendrimer-copper complex, and the third was treated by conversion of the complex into copper nanoparticles encapsulated into the dendrimer. An enhancement in the antimicrobial activity of the textiles was achieved at higher dendrimer concentrations, under illumination with visible light. The fabric modified with the copper nanoparticles encapsulated inside the dendrimer exhibited the best antibacterial activity because it had two photosensitizers (PS), as both 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophores and copper nanoparticles were contained in the dendrimer molecules. The presence of oxygen and suitable illumination activated the photosensitizers to generate the reactive oxygen species (singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and other oxygenated products, e.g., anion radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and hydrogen peroxide) responsible for destroying the bacteria.

Growth Kinetic Study of Tannic Acid Mediated Monodispersed Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized by Chemical Reduction Method and Its Characterization

The complex process of nanoparticle formation in an aqueous solution is governed by kinetics and thermodynamic factors. This paper describes a room-temperature growth kinetic study and evaluation of thermodynamic activation parameters of monodispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized in alkaline medium by chemical reduction method using AgNO₃ as a source of Ag⁺ ions and tannic acid (TA) as a reductant (reducing agent) as well as a capping or stabilizing agent in the absence of any other external stabilizer. A simple and conveniently handled reaction process was monitored spectrophotometrically to study the growth kinetics in an aqueous solution as a function of the concentration of silver ion, hydroxide ion, and TA, respectively. The neutral nucleophilic group donates the electron density via a lone pair of electrons to Ag⁺ ions for the reduction process, i.e., for the nucleation of AgNPs colloid. Also, a few silver ions form a silver oxide, which also facilitates the nucleation center to enhance the growth of AgNPs colloid. The decrease and increase in rate constant on varying the TA concentration showed its adsorption onto the surface of metallic AgNPs and stabilized by polygalloyl units of TA and were the main elements to control the growth kinetics. Consequently, stabilized TA-mediated AgNPs are formed using the electron donated by quinone form of TA followed by a pseudo-first-order reaction. Apart from this, nanoparticles formed were characterized using UV-visible spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction techniques to confirm its formation during the present kinetic study.

Photoluminescent Nanoparticles for Chemical and Biological Analysis and Imaging

Research related to the development and application of luminescent nanoparticles (LNPs) for chemical and biological analysis and imaging is flourishing. Novel materials and new applications continue to be reported after two decades of research. This review provides a comprehensive and heuristic overview of this field. It is targeted to both newcomers and experts who are interested in a critical assessment of LNP materials, their properties, strengths and weaknesses, and prospective applications. Numerous LNP materials are cataloged by fundamental descriptions of their chemical identities and physical morphology, quantitative photoluminescence (PL) properties, PL mechanisms, and surface chemistry. These materials include various semiconductor quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, graphene derivatives, carbon dots, nanodiamonds, luminescent metal nanoclusters, lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles and downshifting nanoparticles, triplet-triplet annihilation nanoparticles, persistent-luminescence nanoparticles, conjugated polymer nanoparticles and semiconducting polymer dots, multi-nanoparticle assemblies, and doped and labeled nanoparticles, including but not limited to those based on polymers and silica. As an exercise in the critical assessment of LNP properties, these materials are ranked by several application-related functional criteria. Additional sections highlight recent examples of advances in chemical and biological analysis, point-of-care diagnostics, and cellular, tissue, and in vivo imaging and theranostics. These examples are drawn from the recent literature and organized by both LNP material and the particular properties that are leveraged to an advantage. Finally, a perspective on what comes next for the field is offered.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Annona squamosa L. seed extract: characterization, photocatalytic and biological activity assay

The aqueous seed extract of Annona squamosa L. was used as a reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The formation of AgNPs in aqueous silver nitrate solution after the addition of the extract was indicated by a colour change from pale yellow to dark brown corresponding to a λ_max at 430 nm. The phytochemicals in the extract, responsible for efficient capping and stabilization of the nanoparticles, were identified by FTIR. Powder XRD pattern demonstrated the polycrystalline nature of the AgNPs. TEM image confirmed that AgNPs were spherical in shape and the average particle size was found to be 22 nm. Further, the nanoparticles exhibited good catalytic activity towards the degradation of coomassie brilliant blue dye and demonstrated significant antibacterial activity. Their larvicidal activity against mosquito larvae showed a LC₅₀ value 22.44 μg/mL against III instars. In addition, AgNPs positively influenced the germination of chickpea seeds.

Bottlebrush-like highly efficient antibacterial coating constructed using α-helical peptide dendritic polymers on the poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene) surface

Infectious diseases induced by pathogenic bacteria are the major causes for the failure of medical implants. Meanwhile, the drug-resistance is steadily developed because of the large and even inappropriate use of antibiotics. Therefore, the development of antibacterial coating with non-antibiotic-based agents on the surfaces of medical implants and devices has been an urgent need. Herein, we propose a bottlebrush-like antibacterial coating on a poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene) (SEBS) triblock copolymer surface by UV-induced graft polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) acrylate terminated poly(lysine dendrimer). This PEG-conjugated antibacterial polymer possessed a substructure of α-helical backbone and cation dendrimer side chains stretching in the radial directions of the helix. The introduction of lysine peptide dendrimers endowed the prepared antibacterial polymer with precisely controlled characteristics of its local cation density, amphipathic composition as well as three-dimensional (3D) conformation to improve interactions with bacterial membranes. The antimicrobial assay and biocompatibility assay results showed that 96.83% of S. aureus and 99.99% of E. coli were killed after being in contact with the antibacterial coating, while no toxicity to mammalian cells or no hemolysis was detected. This antimicrobial activity was further confirmed by the molecular dynamics simulation results, which demonstrated that the employment of lysine peptide dendrimers enhanced the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between the brush and bacterial membranes remarkably. Such bottlebrush-like antibacterial coating constructed using α-helical peptide dendritic polymers may become an effective strategy for manufacturing antibacterial products for biomedical uses.

Copper Sulfide Nanoassemblies for Catalytic and Photoresponsive Eradication of Bacteria from Infected Wounds

Bovine serum albumin (BSA)-encapsulated copper sulfide nanocrystals (CuS NCs) were prepared by heating an alkaline solution containing copper ions and BSA without an additional sulfur source. At a high BSA concentration (0.8 mM), nanoassembly of the as-formed CuS NCs occurs to form BSA-CuS NCs as a result of the formation of BSA gel-like structures. In addition to their intrinsic photothermal properties, the BSA-CuS NCs possess rich surface vacancies and thus exhibit enzyme-like and photodynamic activities. Spontaneous generation of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) led to the in situ formation of copper peroxide (CPO) nanodots on the BSA-CuS NCs to catalyze singlet oxygen radical generation. The antimicrobial response was enhanced by >60-fold upon NIR laser irradiation, which was ascribed to the combined effect of the photodynamic and photothermal inactivation of bacteria. Furthermore, BSA-CuS NCs were transdermally administered onto a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-infected wound and eradicated >99% of bacteria in just 1 min under NIR illumination due to the additional peroxidase-like activity of BSA-CuS NCs, transforming H₂O₂ at the infection site into hydroxyl radicals and thus increasing the synergistic effect from photodynamic and photothermal treatment. The BSA-CuS NCs exhibited insignificant in vitro cytotoxicity and hemolysis and thus can serve as highly biocompatible bactericides in preclinical applications to effectively eradicate bacteria.

Metal-incorporated mesoporous oxides: Synthesis and applications

Mesoporous oxides are outstanding metal nanoparticle catalyst supports owing to their well-defined porous structures. Such mesoporous architectures not only prevent the aggregation of metal nanoparticles but also enhance their catalytic performance. Metal/metal oxide heterojunctions exhibit unique chemical and physical properties because of the surface reconstruction around the junction and electron transfer/interaction across the interface. This article reviews the methods used for synthesizing metal-supported hybrid nanostructures and their applications as catalysts for environmental remediation and sensors for detecting hazardous materials.

Ultrasmall Pd and PtPd nanoparticles for highly efficient catalysis directed by predesigned Morchella-inspired encapsulation

Although bio-inspired designs for ultrasmall metal nanoparticles (NPs) are likely to play an important role in exploring future heterogeneous catalysis materials, synthesizing these structures while retaining surface activity and avoiding aggregation is challenging. Inspired by the Morchella with the spatially and well-organized porous structures, we proposed a biological strategy to yield NPs with ultrasmall and highly dispersed while maintaining high catalytic activity through surfactin self-assembly. Here, multifunctional Morchella-like biological pores (MBP) nanomaterials (~28 nm) with reduction and encapsulation has been synthesized by surfactin self-assembly, then, ultrasmall PtPd (~2.90 nm) and Pd NPs (~2.87 nm) with coordinated sizes and well-dispersed have been successfully reduced and encapsulated inside the MBP. Notably, the synthesis possesses distinct advantages such as mild reaction conditions, strong controllability, good biological compatibility, low-toxicity and environmental friendliness. The as-prepared MBP-encapsulated ultrasmall PtPd and Pd NPs (M@MBP NPs) exhibited excellent catalytic activity and toxicity resistance for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in KOH, due to the synergistic effect of MBP and ultrasmall metal NPs. The current density of PtPd@MBP and Pd@MBP NPs were 3.35 and 2.72 A mg^-1, respectively. Such MBP synthesized and encapsulated nanoparticles open a new frontier for the design and preparation of NPs for various applications, such as catalysis, bioremediation and drug delivery.

Nanofabrication within unimolecular nanoreactors

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been a research focus over the last three decades owing to their unique properties and extensive applications. It is crucial to precisely control the features of NPs including topology, architecture, composition, size, surface and assembly because these features will affect their properties and then applications. Ingenious nanofabrication strategies have been developed to precisely control these features of NPs, especially for templated nanofabrication within predesigned nanoreactors. Compared with conventional nanoreactors (hard templates and supramolecular nanoreactors), unimolecular nanoreactors exhibit (1) covalently stable nanostructures uninfluenced by environmental variations, (2) extensively regulated features of the structure including topology, composition, size, surface and valence due to the rapid development of polymer chemistry, and (3) effective encapsulation of abundant guests with or without strong interaction to achieve the function of loading, delivery and conversion of guests. Thus, unimolecular nanoreactors have shown fascinating prospects as templates for nanofabrication. Various NPs with expected topologies (sphere, rod, tube, branch, and ring), architectures (compact, hollow, core-shell, and necklace-like), compositions (metal, metal oxide, semiconductor, doping, alloy, silica, and composite), sizes (generally 1-100 nm), surface properties (hydrophilic, hydrophobic, reactivity, valence and responsivity) and assemblies (oligomer, chain, and aggregate) can be fabricated easily within reasonably designed unimolecular nanoreactors in a programmable way. In this review, we provide a brief introduction of the properties and types of unimolecular nanoreactors, a condensed summary of representative methodologies of nanofabrication within various unimolecular nanoreactors and a predicted outlook of the potential further developments of this charming nanofabrication approach.

Rational design and latest advances of codelivery systems for cancer therapy

Current treatments have limited effectiveness in treating tumors. The combination of multiple drugs or treatment strategies is widely studied to improve therapeutic effect and reduce adverse effects of cancer therapy. The codelivery system is the key to realize combined therapies. It is necessary to design and construct different codelivery systems in accordance with the variable structures and properties of cargoes and vectors. This review presented the typical design considerations about codelivery vectors for cancer therapy and described the current state of codelivery systems from two aspects: different types of vectors and collaborative treatment strategies. The commonly used loading methods of cargoes into the vectors, including physical and chemical processes, are discussed in detail. Finally, we outline the challenges and perspectives about the improvement of codelivery systems.

New insights into the synthesis, toxicity and applications of gold nanoparticles in CT imaging and treatment of cancer

The past decades have witnessed enormous development of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and their applications in the biomedical field, an area in which they show infinite potential. Abundant investigations have been conducted in improving AuNP synthesis, aimed at obtaining water-dispersible ultrasmall AuNPs, which can exhibit biocompatibility, renal clearance and minimal toxicity. Due to their excellent x-ray attenuation ability, special optical properties and surface modification properties, AuNPs are reported to be promising as computed tomography contrast agents and can be applied in radiotherapy, photothermal and photodynamic therapies, and drug delivery. In this review, synthesis methods and toxicity of AuNPs have been summarized, emphasizing the preparation of ultra-small AuNPs. Applications of AuNPs in computed tomography imaging and cancer treatment are also considered, revealing their potential in the clinic.

Electrochemical Performance of Photovoltaic Cells using HDA Capped-SnS Nanocrystal from bis (N-1,4-Phenyl-N-Morpho-Dithiocarbamato) Sn(II) Complexes

Great consideration is placed on the choice of capping agents' base on the proposed application, in order to cater to the particular surface, size, geometry, and functional group. Change in any of the above can influence the characteristics properties of the nanomaterials. The adoption of hexadecylamine (HDA) as a capping agent in single source precursor approach offers better quantum dots (QDs) sensitizer materials with good quantum efficiency photoluminescence and desirable particles size. Structural, morphological, and electrochemical instruments were used to evaluate the characterization and efficiency of the sensitizers. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) results display both reduction and oxidation peaks for both materials. XRD for SnS/HDA and SnS photosensitizers displays eleven peaks within the values of 27.02° to 66.05° for SnS/HDA and 26.03° to 66.04° for SnS in correlation to the orthorhombic structure. Current density-voltage (I-V) results for SnS/HDA exhibited a better performance compared to SnS sensitizers. Bode plot results indicate electrons lifetime (τ) for SnS/HDA photosensitizer have superiority to the SnS photosensitizer. The results connote that SnS/HDA exhibited a better performance compared to SnS sensitizers due to the presence of HDA capping agent.

Stability issues and approaches to stabilised nanoparticles based drug delivery system

Nanoparticles form the fundamental building blocks for many exciting applications in various scientific disciplines due to its unique features such as large surface to mass ratio, targeting potential, ability to adsorbed and carry other compound which makes them suitable for biomedical applications. However, the problem of the large-scale synthesis of nanoparticles remains challenging due to physical instability associated with nanoparticles which lead to generation of aggregates particles with high polydispersity index (PDI) indicating low particle homogeneity and eventually loss of their special nanoscale properties. The stabilisation concept can be generated by repulsive electrostatic force, which nanoparticles experience, when they are surrounded by a double layer of electric charges. Selection of proper stabiliser will govern the stability of NPs and ultimately development of optimised drug delivery system. This review summarises mechanism of physical instability issues likely to be encountered during the development of nanoformulations. It also discusses potential stabilising agents used so far and their mechanism in achieving stable nanosystems.

Recent Progress and Advances of Multi-Stimuli-Responsive Dendrimers in Drug Delivery for Cancer Treatment

Despite the fact that nanocarriers as drug delivery systems overcome the limitation of chemotherapy, the leakage of encapsulated drugs during the delivery process to the target site can still cause toxic effects to healthy cells in other tissues and organs in the body. Controlling drug release at the target site, responding to stimuli that originated from internal changes within the body, as well as stimuli manipulated by external sources has recently received significant attention. Owning to the spherical shape and porous structure, dendrimer is utilized as a material for drug delivery. Moreover, the surface region of dendrimer has various moieties facilitating the surface functionalization to develop the desired material. Therefore, multi-stimuli-responsive dendrimers or 'smart' dendrimers that respond to more than two stimuli will be an inspired attempt to achieve the site-specific release and reduce as much as possible the side effects of the drug. The aim of this review was to delve much deeper into the recent progress of multi-stimuli-responsive dendrimers in the delivery of anticancer drugs in addition to the major potential challenges.

Recent progress in the industrial and biomedical applications of tragacanth gum: A review

Natural polymers have distinct advantages over synthetic polymers because of their abundance, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Tragacanth gum, an anionic polysaccharide, is a natural polymer which is derived from renewable sources. As a biomaterial, tragacanth gum has been used in industrial settings such as food packaging and water treatment, as well as in the biomedical field as drug carriers and for wound healing purposes. The present review provides an overview on the state-of-the-art in the field of tragacanth gum applications. The structure, properties, cytotoxicity, and degradability as well as the recent advances in industrial and biomedical applications of tragacanth gum are reviewed to offer a backdrop for future research.

Improved Chemical and Colloidal Stability of Gold Nanoparticles through Dendron Capping

Nanoparticle (NP) stability is imperative for commercialization of nanotechnology. In this study, we compare the stability of Au NPs with surfaces functionalized with oleylamine, dodecanethiol, and two dendritic ligands of different generations. Dendrimer ligands provide a significant increase in the chemical stability of Au NPs when analyzed by cyanide-induced NP decomposition as well as an investigation into their colloidal stability at ambient conditions. These results were supported by absorption measurements, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance, and small-angle transmission X-ray scattering and show that dendrimers play a key role in improving the chemical and colloidal stability of NPs.

Hydrogel-Nanoparticles Composite System for Controlled Drug Delivery

Biodegradable poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(-lactic acid) (PEG-b-PLA) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by nanoprecipitation with controlled dimension and with different electric charges, as monitored by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Then NPs were loaded within hydrogels (HG) developed for biomedical applications in the central nervous system, with different pore sizes (30 and 90 nm). The characteristics of the resulting composite hydrogel-NPs system were firstly studied in terms of ability to control the release of small steric hindrance drug mimetic. Then, diffusion-controlled release of different charged NPs from different entangled hydrogels was studied in vitro and correlated with NPs electric charges and hydrogel mean mesh size. These studies showed different trends, that depend on NPs superficial charge and HG mesh size. Release experiments and diffusion studies, then rationalized by mathematical modeling, allowed us to build different drug delivery devices that can satisfy different medical needs.

Facile and green synthesis of pullulan derivative-stabilized Au nanoparticles as drug carriers for enhancing anticancer activity

In this work, we report for the first time AuNPs reduced/stabilized/capped with modified para-aminobenzoic acid-quat188-pullulan (PABA-QP) as excellent nanocarriers for delivery of doxorubicin to enhance the activity and safety of these systems. Spherical AuNPs@PABA-QP obtained by facile and green synthesis under optimum conditions were characterized by UV-VIS, TEM, EDS, SAED, XRD, ATR-FTIR and zeta-potential analyses and showed a narrow size distribution of 13.7 ± 1.9 nm. DOX was successfully loaded onto AuNPs@PABA-QP via intermolecular interactions with high drug loading. DOX-AuNPs@PABA-QP (IC₅₀ = 0.39μM) showed a 2.1-fold higher cytotoxicity against Chago cells than DOX alone (IC₅₀ = 0.82μM), while exhibiting less cytotoxicity against normal cells (Wi-38). Moreover, DOX-AuNPs@PABA-QP also demonstrated high intracellular uptake by endocytosis, arrested in S and G2-M phases of the cell cycle (total S/G2-M increased to approximately 18.0%), induced excellent cytotoxicity, and increased the fraction of late-apoptotic cells (18.6%). Consequently, it is suggested that the novel combination of DOX-AuNPs@PABA-QP has the potential to be developed for human cancer treatment.
