Hydroalkylation of styrenes enabled by boryl radical mediated halogen atom transfer

In this study, we present an inexpensive, stable, and easily available boryl radical source (BPh4Na) employed in a Halogen Atom Transfer (XAT) methodology. This mild and convenient strategy unlocks the use of not only alkyl iodides as radical precursors but also of the more challenging alkyl and aryl bromides to generate C-centered radicals. The generated radicals were further engaged in the anti-Markovnikov hydroalkylation of electronically diverse styrenes, therefore achieving the formation of C(sp3)-C(sp3) and C(sp3)-C(sp2) bonds. A series of experimental and computational studies revealed the prominent role of BPh4Na in the halogen abstraction step.

Reduction of Li+ within a borate anion

Group 1 elements exhibit the lowest electronegativity values in the Periodic Table. The chemical reduction of Group 1 metal cations M+ to M(0) is extremely challenging. Common tetraaryl borates demonstrate limited redox properties and are prone to decomposition upon oxidation. In this study, by employing simple yet versatile bipyridines as ligands, we synthesized a series of redox-active borate anions characterized by NMR and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Notably, the borate anion can realize the reduction of Li+, generating elemental lithium metal and boron radical, thereby demonstrating its potent reducing ability. Furthermore, it can serve as a powerful two-electron-reducing reagent and be readily applied in various reductive homo-coupling reactions and Birch reduction of acridine. Additionally, this borate anion demonstrates its catalytic ability in the selective two-electron reduction of CO2 into CO.

Formation of C-B, C-C, and C-X Bonds from Nonstabilized Aryl Radicals Generated from Diaryl Boryl Radicals

With the development of organoboron chemistry, boron-centered radicals have become increasingly attractive. However, their synthetic applications remain limited in that they have been used only as substrates for addition reactions or as initiators for catalytic reactions. We have achieved a new reaction pathway in which tetraarylborate salts are used as precursors for aryl radicals via boron radicals, by introducing a simple activation reagent. In addition, we carried out a diverse array of transformations involving these aryl radical precursors, which allowed the construction of new C-B, C-C, and C-X bonds in the presence of visible light.

K2CO3-Catalyzed Dual C-C-Coupled Cyclization to 3-Amino-4-benzoylbiphenyls and In Situ I2-Catalyzed C-N Bond Forming Annulation: A Metal-Free Synthesis of Arylacridones

Unprecedented metal-free cyclization catalysis reactions are developed in a highly regioselective fashion to synthesize 3-amino-4-benzoyl biphenyls and arylacridones with high atom economy. Catalytic K2CO3 is utilized as the only reagent for the unusual rapid dual C-C-coupled cyclization between β-keto enamines and cinnamaldehydes to furnish the functionalized biphenyls. Its C(sp2)-H functionalized C-N bond-forming cyclization was performed in situ using molecular I2 as a catalyst to furnish valuable arylacridones. Plausible mechanisms for the new cyclization reactions are predicted by conducting various control experiments and ESI-MS analyses.

P(III)-Promoted Reductive Coupling of Aromatic and Aliphatic Nitro Compounds with Grignard Reagents

A phosphine-promoted reductive coupling of nitro compounds with Grignard reagents is described. Polyfunctional and pharmaceutically relevant diarylamines were generated by this reaction in moderate to high yields. Aliphatic nitro compounds that are highly challenging substrates undergo a combination of α-arylation and reductive coupling to afford the α-arylated arylamines efficiently. A series of valuable biaryl compounds with polyfluorinated and heteroaryl rings are co-generated in 56-94% yields.

The perfluoroadamantoxy aluminate as an ideal weakly coordinating anion? - synthesis and first applications

Weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) facilitate the stabilization and isolation of highly reactive and almost "naked" cations. Alkoxyaluminate-based WCAs such as [Al(OC(CF₃)₃)₄]^- ([pf]^-) are widely used due to their synthetic accessibility and their high stability. However, small cations are still able to coordinate the oxygen atoms of the [pf]^- anion or even to abstract an alkoxy ligand. The novel WCA [Al(OC₁₀F₁₅)₄]^- ([pfAd]^-; OC₁₀F₁₅ = perfluoro-1-adamantoxy) is characterized by a very rigid core framework, thus indicating a higher stability towards fluoride-ion abstraction (DFT calculations) and providing hope to generate less disordered crystal structures. The [pfAd]^- anion was generated by the reaction of the highly acidic alcohol perfluoro-1-adamantanol C₁₀F₁₅OH with LiAlH₄ in o-DFB. Li[pfAd] could not be synthesized free of impurities (and still contains unreacted alcohol). Yet, starting from contaminated Li[pfAd], the very useful pure salts Ag[pfAd], [Ph₃C][pfAd] and [H(OEt₂)₂][pfAd] could be synthesized. The salts were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. Additionally, [NO][pfAd] could be synthesized containing alcohol impurities but nonetheless enabled the synthesis of the salt P₉⁺[pfAd]^-. The synthesis of Tl[pfAd] in a mixture of H₂O/acetone/o-DFB demonstrated the water stability of the [pfAd]^- anion.

Boryl Radical Activation of Benzylic C-OH Bond: Cross-Electrophile Coupling of Free Alcohols and CO2 via Photoredox Catalysis

A new strategy for the direct cleavage of the C(sp³)-OH bond has been developed via activation of free alcohols with neutral diphenyl boryl radical generated from sodium tetraphenylborate under mild visible light photoredox conditions. This strategy has been verified by cross-electrophile coupling of free alcohols and carbon dioxide for the synthesis of carboxylic acids. Direct transformation of a range of primary, secondary, and tertiary benzyl alcohols to acids has been achieved. Control experiments and computational studies indicate that activation of alcohols with neutral boryl radical undergoes homolysis of the C(sp³)-OH bond, generating alkyl radicals. After reducing the alkyl radical into carbon anion under photoredox conditions, the following carboxylation with CO₂ affords the coupling product.

Forging C–C Bonds through Intramolecular Oxidative Coupling of Organoborates – An Overview

C–C bond formation has challenged the community of synthetic organic chemists for decades. Organoboron derivatives represent a mild and functional-group-tolerant class of reagents that can be handled without the need for inert conditions, making them suitable scaffolds for the development of methods that increase the sustainability of current processes for coupling reactions. This short review summarizes the different approaches that have been developed to enable C–C bond formation through intramolecular rearrangements of organoborate species.

N-Methylphenothiazine S-Oxide Enabled Oxidative C(sp2)-C(sp2) Coupling of Boronic Acids with Organolithiums via Phenothiaziniums

Herein, we report the development of a transition-metal-free oxidative C(sp²)-C(sp²) coupling of readily available boronic acids and organolithiums via phenothiazinium ions. Various biaryl, styrene, and diene derivatives were obtained using this reaction system. The key to this process is N-methylphenothiazine S-oxide (PTZSO), which allows efficient conversion of boronic acids to phenothiazinium ions. The mechanism of phenothiazinium formation using PTZSO was investigated using theoretical calculations and experiments, which provided insight into the unique reactivity of PTZSO.

Porphyrin N-Pincer Pd(II)-Complexes in Water: A Base-Free and Nature-Inspired Protocol for the Oxidative Self-Coupling of Potassium Aryltrifluoroborates in Open-Air

Metalloporphyrins (and porphyrins) are well known as pigments of life in nature, since representatives of this group include chlorophylls (Mg-porphyrins) and heme (Fe-porphyrins). Hence, the construction of chemistry based on these substances can be based on the imitation of biological systems. Inspired by nature, in this article we present the preparation of five different porphyrin, meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP), meso-tetra(p-anisyl)porphyrin (TpAP), tetrasodium meso-tetra(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TSTpSPP), meso-tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (TmHPP), and meso-tetra(m-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TmCPP) as well as their N-pincer Pd(II)-complexes such as Pd(II)-meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (PdTPP), Pd(II)-meso-tetra(p-anisyl)porphyrin (PdTpAP), Pd(II)-tetrasodium meso-tetra(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (PdTSTpSPP), Pd(II)-meso-tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (PdTmHPP), and Pd(II)-meso-tetra(m-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (PdTmCPP). These porphyrin N-pincer Pd(II)-complexes were studied and found to be effective in the base-free self-coupling reactions of potassium aryltrifluoroborates (PATFBs) in water at ambient conditions. The catalysts and the products (symmetrical biaryls) were characterized using their spectral data. The high yields of the biaryls, the bio-mimicking conditions, good substrate feasibility, evading the use of base, easy preparation and handling of catalysts, and the application of aqueous media, all make this protocol very attractive from a sustainability and cost-effective standpoint.

Electro-alkynylation: Intramolecular Rearrangement of Trialkynylorganoborates for Chemoselective C(sp2)-C(sp) Bond Formation

An alternative and complementary transformation for the synthesis of aryl- and heteroaryl-substituted alkynes is presented that relies on a chemoselective electrocoupling process. Tetraorganoborate substrates were logically designed and simply accessed by transmetalations using readily or commercially available organotrifluoroborate salts.

Electrochemical Hydroboration of Alkynes

Herein we reported the electrochemical hydroboration of alkynes by using B₂Pin₂ as the boron source. This unprecedented reaction manifold was applied to a broad range of alkynes, giving the hydroboration products in good to excellent yields without the need of a metal catalyst or a hydride source. This transformation relied on the possible electrochemical oxidation of an in situ formed borate. This anodic oxidation performed in an undivided cell allowed the formation of a putative boryl radical, which reacted on the alkyne.

Photocatalyzed Transition-Metal-Free Oxidative Cross-Coupling Reactions of Tetraorganoborates*

Readily accessible tetraorganoborate salts undergo selective coupling reactions under blue light irradiation in the presence of catalytic amounts of transition‐metal‐free acridinium photocatalysts to furnish unsymmetrical biaryls, heterobiaryls and arylated olefins. This represents an interesting conceptual approach to forge C−C bonds between aryl, heteroaryl and alkenyl groups under smooth photochemical conditions. Computational studies were conducted to investigate the mechanism of the transformation.

Transition-Metal-Free Oxidative Cross-Coupling of Tetraarylborates to Biaryls Using Organic Oxidants

Readily prepared tetraarylborates undergo selective (cross)-coupling through oxidation with Bobbitt's salt to give symmetric and unsymmetric biaryls. The organic oxoammonium salt can be used either as a stoichiometric oxidant or as a catalyst in combination with in situ generated NO2 and molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant. For selected cases, oxidative coupling is also possible with NO2 /O2 without any additional nitroxide-based cocatalyst. Transition-metal-free catalytic oxidative ligand cross-coupling of tetraarylborates is unprecedented and the introduced method provides access to various biaryl and heterobiaryl systems.

Electro-Olefination-A Catalyst Free Stereoconvergent Strategy for the Functionalization of Alkenes

Conventional methods carrying out C(sp2 )-C(sp2 ) bond formations are typically mediated by transition-metal-based catalysts. Herein, we conceptualize a complementary avenue to access such bonds by exploiting the potential of electrochemistry in combination with organoboron chemistry. We demonstrate a transition metal catalyst-free electrocoupling between (hetero)aryls and alkenes through readily available alkenyl-tri(hetero)aryl borate salts (ATBs) in a stereoconvergent fashion. This unprecedented transformation was investigated theoretically and experimentally and led to a library of functionalized alkenes. The concept was then carried further and applied to the synthesis of the natural product pinosylvin and the derivatization of the steroidal dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) scaffold.

Electrochemical Synthesis of Biaryls via Oxidative Intramolecular Coupling of Tetra(hetero)arylborates

We report herein versatile, transition metal-free and additive-free (hetero)aryl-aryl coupling reactions promoted by the oxidative electrocoupling of unsymmetrical tetra(hetero)arylborates (TABs) prepared from ligand-exchange reactions on potassium trifluoroarylborates. Exploiting the power of electrochemical oxidations, this method complements the existing organoboron toolbox. We demonstrate the broad scope, scalability, and robustness of this unconventional catalyst-free transformation, leading to functionalized biaryls and ultimately furnishing drug-like small molecules, as well as late stage derivatization of natural compounds. In addition, the observed selectivity of the oxidative coupling reaction is related to the electronic structure of the TABs through quantum-chemical calculations and experimental investigations.

About the selectivity and reactivity of active nickel electrodes in C–C coupling reactions

Active anodes which are operating in highly stable protic media such as 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol are rare. Nickel forms, within this unique solvent, a non-sacrificial active anode at constant current conditions, which is superior to the reported powerful molybdenum system. The reactivity for dehydrogenative coupling reactions of this novel active anode increases when the electrolyte is not stirred during electrolysis. Besides the aryl–aryl coupling, a dehydrogenative arylation reaction of benzylic nitriles was found while stirring the mixture providing quick access to synthetically useful building blocks.

Photooxidative Generation of Dodecaborate-Based Weakly Coordinating Anions

Redox-active proanions of the type B₁₂(OCH₂Ar)₁₂ [Ar = C₆F₅ (1), 4-CF₃C₆H₄ (2), 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃ (3)] are introduced in the context of an experimental and computational study of the visible-light-initiated polymerization of a family of styrenes. Neutral, air-stable proanions 1-3 were found to initiate styrene polymerization through single-electron oxidation under blue-light irradiation, resulting in polymers with number-average molecular weights (M_n) ranging from ∼6 to 100 kDa. Shorter polymer products were observed in the majority of experiments, except in the case of monomers containing 4-X (X = F, Cl, Br) substituents on the styrene monomer when polymerized in the presence of 1 in CH₂Cl₂. Only under these specific conditions are longer polymers (>100 kDa) observed, strongly supporting the formulation that reaction conditions significantly modulate the degree of ion pairing between the dodecaborate anion and cationic chain end. This also suggests that 1-3 behave as weakly coordinating anions (WCA) upon one-electron reduction because no incorporation of the cluster-based photoinitiators is observed in the polymeric products analyzed. Overall, this work is a conceptual realization of a single reagent that can serve as a strong photooxidant, subsequently forming a WCA.
