Advances in metal-organic frameworks for water remediation applications

Rapid industrialization and agricultural development have resulted in the accumulation of a variety of harmful contaminants in water resources. Thus, various approaches such as adsorption, photocatalytic degradation and methods for sensing water contaminants have been developed to solve the problem of water pollution. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of coordination networks comprising organic-inorganic hybrid porous materials having organic ligands attached to inorganic metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds. MOFs represent an emerging class of materials for application in water remediation owing to their versatile structural and chemical characteristics, such as well-ordered porous structures, large specific surface area, structural diversity, and tunable sites. The present review is focused on recent advances in various MOFs for application in water remediation via the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of water contaminants. The sensing of water pollutants using MOFs via different approaches, such as luminescence, electrochemical, colorimetric, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques, is also discussed. The high porosity and chemical tunability of MOFs are the main driving forces for their widespread applications, which have huge potential for their commercial use.

Crystalline Structure and Thermal Stability of an Unknown ZIF-L300 Phase

In recent years, the synthesis, crystalline structure, and applications of zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) have attracted extensive attention. Since the ZIF-L phase was synthesized, a new phase was observed during the heating process, but its crystal structure is unknown. The unknown new phase, which was named ZIF-L300 in this study, was confirmed again. In this study, the X-ray powder diffraction technique and Rietveld refinement were used to solve the crystalline structure of the unknown ZIF-L300 phase. The results demonstrate that ZIF-L300 has the same chemical formula (ZnC₈N₄H₁₀) as in ZIF-8 and belongs to a hexagonal structure with a space group of P6₁. The lattice parameters have been determined as follows: a = b = 8.708(7) Å, c = 24.195(19) Å, α = β = 90°, and γ = 120°. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) technique was also used to extract the local atomic structures. The in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was used to monitor the structural evolution of the as-prepared ZIF-L in a temperature range from room temperature to 600 °C. The results show that the sample experiences a change process from the initial ZIF-L orthorhombic phase (<210 °C), to the ZIF-L300 hexagonal phase (∼300 °C), then to an amorphous phase (∼390 °C), and finally to a zincite ZnO phase (>420 °C). These sorts of structural information are helpful to the application of ZIF materials and enrich the knowledge of the thermal stability of ZIF materials.

Construction of a 3D Metal-Organic Framework and Its Composite for Water Remediation via Selective Adsorption and Photocatalytic Degradation of Hazardous Dye

In this work, a new bimetallic Na(I)-Zn(II) metal-organic framework (MOF), formulated as [Na₂Zn₃(btc)₂(μ-HCOO)₂(μ-H₂O)₈] _n (1) (H₃btc = benzene tricarboxylic acid), and its composite (ZnO@1) have been successfully synthesized using solvothermal and mechanochemical solid grinding methods. 1 and ZnO@1 were characterized by diffraction [single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and powder XRD], spectroscopic (ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), microscopic (transmission electron microscopy), and thermal (thermogravimetric analysis) methods. The surface area and porosity of 1 were determined using a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyzer. Single-crystal diffraction of 1 confirms that Na1 and Zn2 have octahedral coordination environments, whereas Zn1 has a tetrahedral coordination geometry. Topological simplification of 1 shows a 3,6-connected kgd net. Na(I)-Zn(II) MOF (1) is crystallized with slight porosity and exhibits good tendency toward the encapsulation of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The photocatalytic behaviors of 1 and its composite (ZnO@1) were investigated over MB dye under sunlight illumination with promising degradation efficiencies of 93.69% for 1 and 97.53% for ZnO@1 in 80 min.

3-Aminopropyl-triethoxysilane-Functionalized Tannin-Rich Grape Biomass for the Adsorption of Methyl Orange Dye: Synthesis, Characterization, and the Adsorption Mechanism

A biomass amino silica-functionalized material was successfully prepared by a simple sol-gel method. 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was added to a tannin-rich grape residue to improve its physicochemical properties and enhance the adsorption performance. The APTES functionalization led to significant changes in the material's characteristics. The functionalized material was efficiently applied in the removal of methyl orange (MO) due to its unique characteristics, such as an abundance of functional groups on its surface. The adsorption process suggests that the electrostatic interactions were the main acting mechanism of the MO dye removal, although other interactions can also take place. The functionalized biomass achieved a very high MO dye maximum adsorption capacity (Q _max) of 361.8 mg g^-1. The temperature positively affected the MO removal, and the thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption of MO onto APTES-functionalized biomass was spontaneous and endothermic, and enthalpy is driven in the physisorption mode. The regeneration performance revealed that the APTES-functionalized biomass material could be easily recycled and reused by maintaining very good performance even after five cycles. The adsorbent material was also employed to treat two simulated dye house effluents, which showed 48% removal. At last, the APTES biomass-based material may find significant applications as a multifunctional adsorbent and can be used further to separate pollutants from wastewater.

Recent advances in metal-organic framework membranes for water treatment: A review

Among many separation membranes reported to date, the favorable polymer affinity and unique physio-chemical performances of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) including ultra-high surface area, regular and highly controlled porosity have drawn widespread attention in industrial and academic communities. In this comprehensive review, the developmental timeline of MOF containing membranes for water treatment were clarified. The removal efficiencies, elimination mechanisms, as well as possible influencing factors of various MOF containing membranes that applied to water treatment were systematically summarized. The excellent removal performances of MOF containing membranes for various pollutants were determined by the size-exclusion, π-π stacking interaction, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and so on. Since the progress of engineered MOF containing membranes for practical wastewater treatment applications lags, we further analyzed the potential environmental application of MOF containing membranes from four aspects (stability of MOFs, antifouling performance of membranes, compatibility between MOF fillers and polymer matrix, dispersity of MOF nanoparticles in matrix), hoping to provide some meaningful insights.

Investigation into the Adsorption of Methylene Blue and Methyl Orange by UiO-66-NO2 Nanoparticles

In this work, the adsorptive removal of methylene blue and methyl orange by UiO-66-NO₂ nanoparticles was studied. The influence of pH on the adsorption capacity was assessed. The kinetics of the adsorption process were investigated and compared with pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle models. The kinetics of the adsorption fits moderately with the pseudo-first-order, but perfectly fits with pseudo-second-order models, and has a very good fit with the Elovich and intraparticle models. The adsorption isotherms were measured and compared with the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The adsorption capacity of methyl orange (MO) on UiO-66-NO₂ nanoparticles (142.9 mg/g) was over three times higher than that of methylene blue (MB) on the nanoparticles (41.7 mg/g). The discrepancy between these capacities was attributed to the presence of the -NO₂ functional group, which caused a strong negative mesomeric effect in the metal-organic framework structure.

The designed synthesis of a hydrophobic covalent polymer composite to expel toxic dyes and oil from wastewater: theoretical corroboration

In pursuit of addressing a global issue linked to the purification of contaminated water bodies, hydrophobic covalent organic framework (CPCMERI-2020) and its post-synthetically modified composites CPWCS and MS@CPWCS are reported herein.

Hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks: synthesis strategies, structure(s), and emerging applications in decontamination

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high porosity have received much attention as promising materials for many applications owing to their unique properties. However, to date, most of the reported MOFs have microporous structures, which slow down diffusion/mass transfer and limit the accessibility of bulky molecules to its internal surface. Thus, it is crucial to develop an efficient way to create larger pores (mesoporous and/or macroporous) into microporous MOFs to form hierarchical porous metal-organic frameworks (HP-MOFs), which facilitate the diffusion and mass transfer of guest molecules. HP-MOFs are excellent and promising candidates for environmental applications under the background of environmental contaminations. In this review paper, we are primarily focusing on the latest progress in the preparation of HP-MOFs by employing template-assisted and template-free synthetic approaches for environmental cleaning applications. Particularly, the adsorptive purification of the most common toxic substances, including gases, dyes, heavy metal ions, and antibiotics from the environment using HP-MOFs as adsorbents is briefly discussed. The overall results clearly showed that the superiority of HP-MOFs compared with conventional microporous MOFs. Finally, we summarize the remaining challenges and provide personal perspectives on possible future development of HP-MOFs.

Selective Adsorption of Cationic Dyes for Stable Metal-Organic Framework ZJU-48

A cationic metal-organic framework (MOF) ZJU-48 with one-dimensional pores of about 9.1 × 9.1 Ų has been prepared from zinc ions, adenine, and carboxyl ligands. ZJU-48 displays excellent water stability for about one week, exhibiting its potential application for adsorption and separation of dyes. Cationic and anionic dyes with similar sizes are adopted to study the adsorbing and separating properties of ZJU-48. Cationic dyes are adsorbed better than anionic dyes because of the negatively charged zeta potential of the material surface, implying its selective adsorption to cationic dyes, and it is charge-based adsorption. Meanwhile, the adsorption ability of the MOF to cationic dyes with different sizes is also investigated. We find that the adsorbed amount decreases with increase in the size of organics ,indicating that it is size-based adsorption. Furthermore, the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) is employed and focused on for its suitable charge and fitting size to evaluate the maximum adsorption capacity and desorption progress of ZJU-48. The results show that the maximum loaded amount of MOF toward MB reaches 582.44 mg/g, and about 90% of loaded dyes can be released from frameworks in N,N-dimethylformamide with NaCl over 6 h, exhibiting satisfactory adsorptive property and possibility as a reusable adsorbent.

Metal-Organic Framework Membranes and Membrane Reactors: Versatile Separations and Intensified Processes

Metal-organic frameworks are an emerging and fascinating category of porous solids that can be self-assembled with metal-based cations linked by organic molecules. The unique features of MOFs in porosity (or surface areas), together with their diversity for chemical components and architectures, make MOFs attractive candidates in many applications. MOF membranes represent a long-term endeavor to convert MOF crystals in the lab to potentially industry-available commodities, which, as a promising alternative to distillation, provide a bright future for energy-efficient separation technologies closely related with chemicals, the environment, and energy. The membrane reactor shows a typical intensified process strategy by combining the catalytic reaction with the membrane separation in one unit. This review highlights the recent process of MOF-based membranes and the importance of MOF-based membrane reactors in relative intensified chemical processes.

Membrane adsorbers with ultrahigh metal-organic framework loading for high flux separations

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high porosity and designable functionality make it possible to access the merits of high permeability and selectivity. However, scalable fabrication methods to produce mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with good flexibility and ultrahigh MOF loading are urgently needed yet largely unmet. Herein, we report a thermally induced phase separation-hot pressing (TIPS-HoP) strategy to roll-to-roll produce 10 distinct MOF-membranes (loadings up to 86 wt%). Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene interweaving the MOF particles contributes to their mechanical strength. Rejections (99%) of organic dyes with a water flux of 125.7 L m^–2 h^–1 bar^–1 under cross-flow filtration mode. The micron-sized channels between the MOF particles translate into fast water permeation, while the porous MOFs reject solutes through rapid adsorption. This strategy paves ways for developing high-performance membrane adsorbers for crucial separation processes. As a proof-of-concept, the abilities of the membrane adsorbers for separating racemates and proteins have been demonstrated.

Mixed matrix membranes have shown great promise for separation applications, but low filler loading typically leads to low selectivity. Design of ultrathin hybrid membranes with improved retention efficiency of molecular dyes

Nanocellulose–graphene oxide ultrathin coatings for water purification membranes with excellent swelling resistance, permeability and dyes retention are presented.
