Possibilities and Limitations of Kinetic Studies in On-Surface Synthesis by Real Time X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The kinetics of coupling reactions on surfaces can be quantitatively studied in real time by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). From fitting experimental data, kinetic reaction parameters such as the rate constant's pre-exponential and activation energy can be deduced and compared to quantum chemical simulations. To elucidate the possibilities and limitations of this approach, we propose studies in which experimental data are first simulated and subsequently fitted. Knowing the exact kinetic parameters used in the simulation allows one to evaluate the accuracy of the fit result. Here, several experimental influences, such as the data point density and the addition of noise, are explored for a model reaction with first-order kinetics. The proposed procedure sheds light on the accuracy with which kinetic parameters can be derived and may also help in the design of future experiments.

Mechanistic insights into on-surface reactions from isothermal temperature-programmed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

On-surface synthesis often proceeds under kinetic control due to the irreversibility of key reaction steps, rendering kinetic studies pivotal. The accurate quantification of reaction rates also bears potential for unveiling reaction mechanisms. Temperature-Programmed X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (TP-XPS) has emerged as an analytical tool for kinetic studies with splendid chemical and sufficient temporal resolution. Here, we demonstrate that the common linear temperature ramps lead to fitting ambiguities. Moreover, pinpointing the reaction order remains intricate, although this key parameter entails information on atomistic mechanisms. Yet, TP-XPS experiments with a stepped temperature profile comprised of isothermal segments facilitate the direct quantification of rate constants from fitting time courses. Thereby, rate constants are obtained for a series of temperatures, which allows independent extraction of both activation energies and pre-exponentials from Arrhenius plots. By using two analogous doubly versus triply brominated aromatic model compounds, we found that their debromination on Ag(111) is best modeled by second-order kinetics and thus proceeds via the involvement of a second, non-obvious reactant. Accordingly, we propose that debromination is activated by surface supplied Ag adatoms. This hypothesis is supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. We foresee auspicious prospects for this TP-XPS variant for further exploring the kinetics and mechanisms of on-surface reactions.

Highly Selective On-Surface Ring-Opening of Aromatic Azulene Moiety

Controllable ring-opening of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons plays a crucial role in various chemical and biological processes. However, breaking down aromatic covalent C-C bonds is exceptionally challenging due to their high stability and strong aromaticity. This study presents a seminal report on the precise and highly selective on-surface ring-opening of the seven-membered ring within the aromatic azulene moieties under mild conditions. The chemical structures of the resulting products were identified using bond-resolved scanning probe microscopy. Furthermore, through density functional theory calculations, we uncovered the mechanism behind the ring-opening process and elucidated its chemical driving force. The key to achieving this ring-opening process lies in manipulating the local aromaticity of the aromatic azulene moiety through strain-induced internal ring rearrangement and cyclodehydrogenation. By precisely controlling these factors, we successfully triggered the desired ring-opening reaction. Our findings not only provide valuable insights into the ring-opening process of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons but also open up new possibilities for the manipulation and reconstruction of these important chemical structures.

On-Surface Thermal Stability of a Graphenic Structure Incorporating a Tropone Moiety

On-surface synthesis, complementary to wet chemistry, has been demonstrated to be a valid approach for the synthesis of tailored graphenic nanostructures with atomic precision. Among the different existing strategies used to tune the optoelectronic and magnetic properties of these nanostructures, the introduction of non-hexagonal rings inducing out-of-plane distortions is a promising pathway that has been scarcely explored on surfaces. Here, we demonstrate that non-hexagonal rings, in the form of tropone (cycloheptatrienone) moieties, are thermally transformed into phenyl or cyclopentadienone moieties upon an unprecedented surface-mediated retro–Buchner-type reaction involving a decarbonylation or an intramolecular rearrangement of the CO unit, respectively.

In Situ Observation of Stepwise C-H Bond Scission: Deciphering the Catalytic Selectivity of Ethylbenzene-to-Styrene Conversion on TiO2

The conversion of light alkanes to olefins is crucial to the chemical industry. The quest for improved catalytic performance for this conversion is motivated by current drawbacks including: expensive noble metal catalysts, poor conversion, low selectivity, and fast decay of efficiency. The in situ visualization of complex catalysis at the atomic level is therefore a major advance in the rational framework upon building the future catalysts. Herein, the catalytic C-H bond activations of ethylbenzene on TiO₂(110)-(1 × 1) were explored with high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and first-principles calculations. We report that the first C-H bond scission is a two-step process that can be triggered by either heat or ultraviolet light at 80 K, with near 100% selectivity of β-CH bond cleavage. This work provides fundamental understanding of C-H bonds cleavage of ethylbenzene on metal oxides, and it may promote the design of new catalysts for selective styrene production under mild conditions.
