Imparting Ultrahigh Strength to Polymers via a New Concept Strategy of Construction of up to Duodecuple Hydrogen Bonding among Macromolecular Chains

Interconnecting macromolecules via multiple hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) can simultaneously strengthen and toughen polymers, but material synthesis becomes extremely difficult with increasing number of H-bonding donors and acceptors; therefore, most reports are limited to triple and quadruple H-bonds. Herein, this bottleneck is overcome by adopting a quartet-wise approach of constructing H-bonds instead of the traditional pairwise method. Thus, large multiple hydrogen bonds can be easily established, and the supramolecular interactions are further reinforced. Especially, when such multiple H-bond motifs are embedded in polymers, four macromolecular chains-rather than two as usual-are tied, distributing the applied stress over a larger volume and more significantly improving the overall mechanical properties. Proof-of-concept studies indicate that the proposed intermolecular multiple H-bonds (up to duodecuple) are readily introduced in polyurethane. A record-high tensile strength (105.2 MPa) is achieved alongside outstanding toughness (352.1 MJ m-3), fracture energy (480.7 kJ m-2), and fatigue threshold (2978.4 J m-2). Meantime, the polyurethane has acquired excellent self-healability and recyclability. This strategy is also applicable to nonpolar polymers, such as polydimethylsiloxane, whose strength (15.3 MPa) and toughness (50.3 MJ m-3) are among the highest reported to date for silicones. This new technique has good expandability and can be used to develop even more and stronger polymers.

Insight into the glycerol extraction from biodiesel using deep eutectic solvents

CONTEXT

The main challenge of large-scale biofuel production is related to the extraction of its undesired impurities including glycerol, water, methanol, soap/catalyst, free fatty acids, glycerides, and others. There are many ways to remove glycerol, and herein, the one alternative is the extraction of glycerol from biodiesel by deep eutectic solvents. In this regard, the mixture of a choline chloride (ChCl) and urea, methyltriphenylphosphonium chloride (MTPPCl), and ethylene glycol (EGL), as a deep eutectic solvent (DES), is effective in removing glycerol from biofuel.

METHODS

In this work, we have investigated the formation mechanism of ChCl and urea, and then MTPPCl and EGL, as a DES, and then extraction of glycerol from biofuel via DES implementing density functional theory (DFT) by Gaussian09 software, B3LYP basis set, and classical all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations by Gromacs software, GROMOS force field. DFT approximation demonstrates that Cl ion plays an important binding role in the formation of complexes ChCl/urea-based DES + biofuel and in MTPPCl/EGL-based DES + biofuel. We have also considered the formation and change of hydrogen bonds upon the formation of these systems using the DFT method. Large HOMO-LUMO gaps in ChCl/urea-based DES + biofuel and in MTPPCl/urea-based DES + biofuel demonstrate the stability of the complexes. The results of MD work have stated that the chloride ion formed bonding with the choline/ethylene glycol EGL, while still weakly intermolecular interacting with the urea/methyltriphenylphosphonium in ChCl/urea- and MTPPCl/EGL-based DESs. Further results of MD simulations stated that the DESs had a higher intermolecular interaction with glycerol in comparison with biofuel, thereby favoring the extraction process of glycerol from model biofuel.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Intermolecular interactions of choline chloride and urea, methyl triphenyl phosphonium chloride, and ethylene glycol-based DESs and their applications in the extraction of glycerol from biofuel studied by DFT calculations and classical all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. • Calculated outputs of DFT calculations and classical all-atom molecular dynamics simulations for DESs and their applications in the extraction of glycerol from biofuel were discussed in detail. • The molecular formation mechanism of choline and methyl triphenyl phosphonium-based DESs and their application in the extraction process of glycerol from biofuel were summarized.

Intermolecular interactions in the crystalline structure of some polyhalogenated Di- And triamino Pyridines: Spectroscopical perspectives

Supramolecular synthon is identified as a unit and provides important structural and energetic information in the study of organic crystals. However, the direct estimation of the supramolecular interaction remains challenging. In the present work six polyhalogenated di- or triamino pyridines were synthesised, their crystalline structure was characterised, and corresponding supramolecular synthons were studied using a combination of quantum mechanical calculations and FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. Some distinctive features were identified especially for three vibrational normal modes (RNMs) related to the pyridine ring (viz. RNM₁, RNM₃ and RNM₇) in the vibrational spectra (FT-IR and Raman) of the solid samples, which are due to the supramolecular interactions, hydrogen bond (hb) in particular, according to the quantum mechanical calculations. The comparison between the IR and Raman spectra of experimental and simulated results indicates that the adjacent intermolecular hydrogen bonds between two same molecules extensively exist in the solid samples. Moreover, some quantitative correlation was established among the dimerisation energies for hb dimers (hb1 dimers for compounds 1 and 2), the ring structure defined by the distribution of the substituents and quantitative characteristics of the vibrational spectra, for instance, the splitting magnitudes for RNM₃(2) in IR spectra and the peak gap between RNM₁ and RNM₂ in Raman spectra.

Studying the Formation of Choline Chloride- and Glucose-Based Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent at the Molecular Level

The liquid waste is the major source of waste, which usually generated from academic laboratories and industry during the extraction, separation, chemical synthesis, and pretreatment processes. These chemical and engineering processes require more solvents. In this regard, there is a need to develop more environmentally friendly, cheaper, non-toxic solvents that are harmless to humans and the environment. In this regard, deep eutectic solvents (DES) and their derivatives so-called natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) are a new field in the search for green alternative solvents. In our work, the formation of choline chloride-based NADESs using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and classical all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was studied in detail using Gaussian09 and Gromacs software's. Next, the ground state geometry optimizations were performed in the gas phase using DFT B3LYP 6-31 + G(d) level of theory. Moreover, classical all-atom MD simulations were implemented using Gromos force field. After the modeling and simulations, the DFT calculation results revealed the formation of NADESs via formation (creation) of binding between chlorine and choline, and chlorine and glucose. At the same time, the results of classical all-atom MD simulations, based on the time average of the equilibrated production run of MD simulations, stated that the nitrogen atom of choline ion and chloride ion has greater interactions, while chloride ion has also greater interaction with glucose during formation of NADES. The outcomes of both DFT and classical all-atom MD simulations are in good agreements.

How do electron donating substituents affect the electronic structure, molecular topology, vibrational properties and intra- and intermolecular interactions of polyhalogenated pyridines?

Seven polyhalogenated pyridine derivatives bearing an amino or a hydroxyl group, either at the ortho or para position, were studied using a combined experimental and computational approach. The presence of an electron donating substituent strongly impacted on the geometry, electronic structure, electrostatic properties, molecular topology and vibrational characteristics of these compounds compared to the corresponding polyhalogenated pyridines. In particular the attention was focused on changes in wavenumbers, force constants and intensity of the seven in-plane Ring Normal Modes (RNMs). Due to the nature and position of the substituents, intra- and intermolecular interactions also underwent dramatic modifications, as revealed using Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis, Non-Covalent Interaction (NCI) analysis and Atom-In-Molecule (AIM) theory. Raman and FT-IR spectra of these seven compounds were also collected in solid phase and rationalised by the simulated spectra for hydrogen bonding and/or π-π stacking based homodimers. The present study provides a strategy not only for the vibrational characterisation for the individual compounds, but also for shedding light on the ways of molecular packing in the molecular crystals or cocrystals involving these compounds.

Quantitative characterisation of the ring normal modes. Pyridine as a study case

In the present work, the vibrational normal modes (NM) of pyridine were revisited. Quantum Chemical calculations were performed to help understand the true nature of some ring related vibrational normal modes (RNM) and how they may be correlated with the electronic structure on the ring. The 27 vibrational normal modes were decomposed into the molecular internal coordinates, and the interest was focused on 7 of them, involving the in-plane ring motion. The electronic structure was analysed through frontier Molecular Orbitals (MO), maps of Molecular Electrostatic Potential surfaces (MEPs) and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis in a dynamic manner, wherein, each vibration was scanned. The present investigation is aimed to provide the Reader with a quantitative characterisation of the RNMs of pyridine.
