Seasonal variation in aerosol composition and concentration upon transport from the outdoor to indoor environment

Emerging investigator series: an instrument to measure and speciate the total reactive nitrogen budget indoors: description and field measurements

Reactive nitrogen species (N_r), defined here as all N-containing compounds except N₂ and N₂O, have been shown to be important drivers for indoor air quality. Key N_r species include NO_x (NO + NO₂), HONO and NH₃, which are known to have detrimental health effects. In addition, other N_r species that are not traditionally measured may be important chemical actors for indoor transformations (e.g. amines). Cooking and cleaning are significant sources of N_r, whose emission will vary depending on the type of activity and materials used. Here we present a novel instrument that measures the total gas-phase reactive nitrogen (tN_r) budget and key species NO_x, HONO, and NH₃ to demonstrate its suitability for indoor air quality applications. The tN_r levels were measured using a custom-built heated platinum (Pt) catalytic furnace to convert all N_r species to NO_x, called the tN_r oven. The measurement approach was validated through a series of control experiments, such that quantitative measurement and speciation of the total N_r budget are demonstrated. The optimum operating conditions of the tN_r oven were found to be 800 °C with a sampling flow rate of 630 cubic centimetres per minute (ccm). Oxidized nitrogen species are known to be quantitatively converted under these conditions. Here, the efficiency of the tN_r oven to convert reduced N_r species to NO_x was found to reach a maximum at 800 °C, with 103 ± 13% conversion for NH₃ and 79-106% for selected relevant amines. The observed variability in the conversion efficiency of reduced N_r species demonstrates the importance of catalyst temperature characterization for the tN_r oven. The instrument was deployed successfully in a commercial kitchen, a complex indoor environment with periods of rapidly changing levels, and shown to be able to reliably measure the tN_r budget during periods of longer-lived oscillations (>20 min), typical of indoor spaces. The measured NO_x, HONO and basic N_r (NH₃ and amines) were unable to account for all the measured tN_r, pointing to a substantial missing fraction (on average 18%) in the kitchen. Overall, the tN_r instrument will allow for detailed survey(s) of the key gaseous N_r species across multiple locations and may also identify missing N_r fractions, making this platform capable of stimulating more in-depth analysis in indoor atmospheres.

Submicron Aerosol Composition and Source Contribution across the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, in Winter

The Kathmandu valley experiences an average wintertime PM1 concentration of ∼100 μg m-3 and daily peaks over 200 μg m-3. We present ambient nonrefractory PM1 chemical composition, and concentration measured by a mini aerosol mass spectrometer (mAMS) sequentially at Dhulikhel (on the valley exterior), then urban Ratnapark, and finally suburban Lalitpur in winter 2018. At all sites, organic aerosol (OA) was the largest contributor to combined PM1 (C-PM1) (49%) and black carbon (BC) was the second largest contributor (21%). The average background C-PM1 at Dhulikhel was 48 μg m-3; the urban enhancement was 120% (58 μg m-3). BC had an average of 6.1 μg m-3 at Dhulikhel, an urban enhancement of 17.4 μg m-3. Sulfate (SO4) was 3.6 μg m-3 at Dhulikhel, then 7.5 μg m-3 at Ratnapark, and 12.0 μg m-3 at Lalitpur in the brick kiln region. Chloride (Chl) increased by 330 and 250% from Dhulikhel to Ratnapark and Lalitpur on average. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) identified seven OA sources, four primary OA sources, hydrocarbon-like (HOA), biomass burning (BBOA), trash burning (TBOA), a sulfate-containing local OA source (sLOA), and three secondary oxygenated organic aerosols (OOA). OOA was the largest fraction of OA, over 50% outside the valley and 36% within. HOA (traffic) was the most prominent primary source, contributing 21% of all OA and 44% of BC. Brick kilns were the second largest contributor to C-PM1, 12% of OA, 33% of BC, and a primary emitter of aerosol sulfate. These results, though successive, indicate the importance of multisite measurements to understand ambient particulate matter concentration heterogeneity across urban regions.

Phase state of organic aerosols may limit temperature-driven thermodynamic repartitioning following outdoor-to-indoor transport

Ambient aerosols often experience temperature and humidity gradients following outdoor-to-indoor transport, causing organic aerosols (OA) to either gain or lose mass via gas-particle repartitioning. Recent models have sought to quantify these effects using equilibrium partitioning thermodynamics. However, evidence suggests some indoor OA may possess glassy or semisolid phase states with higher viscosities than liquid OA. Characteristic partitioning timescales of higher-viscosity particles are significantly longer than for liquid particles, which may either fully or partially inhibit repartitioning. For outdoor OA experiencing a temperature change during transport indoors, the ultimate repartitioning state depends on the relationship between the gas-particle partitioning rate coefficient (k_gp) of semivolatile organics and the indoor particle loss rate coefficient (l_p). That is, thermodynamic equilibrium partitioning may occur when semivolatile k_gp ≫ l_p, no repartitioning when semivolatile k_gp ≪ l_p, and partial repartitioning when their magnitudes are similar. Longer indoor particle lifetimes, higher particle number, and larger particle sizes all raise k_gp (driving repartitioning towards equilibrium). For simulated U.S. residences, equilibrium condensation was likely reached in humid climate zones during warm meteorological conditions. In colder regions, the degree of evaporative repartitioning depended on whether organics could repartition before the particle phase state adjusts to indoor conditions, which is uncertain. When an appreciable temperature gradient exists, this study not only confirmed that all outdoor-originating OA that is liquid indoors will reach thermodynamic equilibrium, but also concluded that a plurality (46% for this domain) of such OA that is semisolid may also achieve thermodynamic equilibrium during its indoor lifetime.

Detailed Investigation of the Contribution of Gas-Phase Air Contaminants to Exposure Risk during Indoor Activities

Analytical capabilities in atmospheric chemistry provide new opportunities to investigate indoor air. HOMEChem was a chemically comprehensive indoor field campaign designed to investigate how common activities, such as cooking and cleaning, impacted indoor air in a test home. We combined gas-phase chemical data of all compounds, excluding those with concentrations <1 ppt, with established databases of health effect thresholds to evaluate potential risks associated with gas-phase air contaminants and indoor activities. The chemical composition of indoor air is distinct from outdoor air, with gaseous compounds present at higher levels and greater diversity─and thus greater predicted hazard quotients─indoors than outdoors. Common household activities like cooking and cleaning induce rapid changes in indoor air composition, raising levels of multiple compounds with high risk quotients. The HOMEChem data highlight how strongly human activities influence the air we breathe in the built environment, increasing the health risk associated with exposure to air contaminants.

Simulating indoor inorganic aerosols of outdoor origin with the inorganic aerosol thermodynamic equilibrium model ISORROPIA

Outdoor aerosols can transform and have their composition altered upon transport indoors. Herein, IMAGES, a platform that simulates indoor organic aerosol with the 2-dimensional volatility basis set (2D-VBS), was extended to incorporate the inorganic aerosol thermodynamic equilibrium model, ISORROPIA. The model performance was evaluated by comparing aerosol component predictions to indoor measurements from an aerosol mass spectrometer taken during the summer and winter seasons. Since ammonia was not measured in the validation dataset, outdoor ammonia was estimated from aerosol measurements using a novel pH-based algorithm, while nitric acid was held constant. Modeled indoor ammonia sources included temperature-based occupant and surface emissions. Sensitivity to the nitric acid indoor surface deposition rate β g , HNO 3 , g was explored by varying it in model runs, which did not affect modeled sulfate due to its non-volatile nature, though the fitting of a filter efficiency was required for good correlations of modeled sulfate with measurements in both seasons. Modeled summertime nitrate well-matched measured observations when β g , HNO 3 , g = 2.75 h - 1 , but wintertime comparisons were poor, possibly due to missing thermodynamic processes within the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. Ammonium was consistently overpredicted, potentially due to neglecting thirdhand smoke impacts observed in the field campaign, as well as HVAC impacts.

Temperature and indoor environments

From the thermodynamic perspective, the term temperature is clearly defined for ideal physical systems: A unique temperature can be assigned to each black body via its radiation spectrum, and the temperature of an ideal gas is given by the velocity distribution of the molecules. While the indoor environment is not an ideal system, fundamental physical and chemical processes, such as diffusion, partitioning equilibria, and chemical reactions, are predictably temperature-dependent. For example, the logarithm of reaction rate and equilibria constants are proportional to the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. It is therefore possible to have non-linear, very steep changes in chemical phenomena over a relatively small temperature range. On the contrary, transport processes are more influenced by spatial temperature, momentum, and pressure gradients as well as by the density, porosity, and composition of indoor materials. Consequently, emergent phenomena, such as emission rates or dynamic air concentrations, can be the result of complex temperature-dependent relationships that require a more empirical approach. Indoor environmental conditions are further influenced by the thermal comfort needs of occupants. Not only do occupants have to create thermal conditions that serve to maintain their core body temperature, which is usually accomplished by wearing appropriate clothing, but also the surroundings must be adapted so that they feel comfortable. This includes the interaction of the living space with the ambient environment, which can vary greatly by region and season. Design of houses, apartments, commercial buildings, and schools is generally utility and comfort driven, requiring an appropriate energy balance, sometimes considering ventilation but rarely including the impact of temperature on indoor contaminant levels. In our article, we start with a review of fundamental thermodynamic variables and discuss their influence on typical indoor processes. Then, we describe the heat balance of people in their thermal environment. An extensive literature study is devoted to the thermal conditions in buildings, the temperature-dependent release of indoor pollutants from materials and their distribution in the various interior compartments as well as aspects of indoor chemistry. Finally, we assess the need to consider temperature holistically with regard to the changes to be expected as a result of global emergencies such as climate change.

Using Real Time Measurements to Derive the Indoor and Outdoor Contributions of Submicron Particulate Species and Trace Gases

The indoor environment is usually more polluted than outdoors due to emissions of gas and particle-phase pollutants from multiple sources, leading to their accumulation on top of the infiltration of outdoor pollution. While it is widely recognized that negative health effects arise from the exposure to outdoor air pollution, exposure to indoor pollutants also needs to be well assessed since we spend most of our time (~90%) breathing indoors. Indoor concentrations of pollutants are driven by physicochemical processes and chemical transformations taking place indoors, acting as sources and/or sinks. While these basic concepts are understood, assessing the contribution of each process is still challenging. In this study, we deployed online instrumentation in an unoccupied room to test a methodology for the apportionment of indoor and outdoor pollutant sources. This method was successfully applied to the apportionment of PM₁ and VOCs, however, there are limitations for reactive gases such as O₃. The results showed that this unoccupied indoor environment acts as a source of VOCs and contributes 87% on OVOCs and 6% on C_xH_y, while it acts as a sink for particles, likely due to losses through volatilization up to 60%.

Modification of cleaning product formulations could improve indoor air quality

Cleaning products contain numerous individual chemicals, which can be liberated on use. These species can react in air to form new chemical species, some of which are harmful to health. This paper uses a detailed chemical model for indoor air chemistry, to understand the chemical reactions that can occur following cleaning, assuming cleaning products with different proportions of limonene, α-pinene, and β-pinene are used. The tests included the pure compounds, 50:50 mixtures and mixtures in proportion to the rates of reaction with ozone and the hydroxyl radical. For the 3 h following cleaning, pure α-pinene was most efficient at producing particles, pure limonene for nitrated organic material, and a 50:50 mixture of β-pinene and limonene for formaldehyde, leading to enhancements of 1.1 μg/m³ , 400 ppt, and 1.8 ppb, respectively, compared to no cleaning. Cleaning in the afternoon enhanced concentrations of secondary pollutants for all the mixtures, owing to higher outdoor and hence indoor ozone compared to the morning. These enhancements in concentrations lasted several hours, despite the cleaning emissions only lasting for 10 min. Doubling the air exchange rate enhanced concentrations of formaldehyde and particulate matter by ~15% while reducing that of nitrated organic material by 13%. Changing product formulations has the potential to change the resulting indoor air quality and consequently, impacts on health.

Emission characteristics, sources, and airborne fate of speciated organics in particulate matters in a Hong Kong residence

A growing number of studies warn of the adverse health effects of indoor particulate matters (PM). However, little is known about the molecular compositions and emission characteristics of PM-bound organics (OM) indoors, a critical group of species with highest concentration and complexity in indoor PM. In a Hong Kong residence where prescribed activities were performed with normal frequency and intensity, we found that the activities significantly elevated not only the total concentration but also the fraction of OM in indoor PM. However, the concentration of the total PM-bound OM outdoors (10.3 ± 0.7 μg/m³ ) surpassed that for the indoor counterpart during the undisturbed period (8.2 ± 0.1 μg/m³ ), that is, period when there was no activity with high emission of PM but the residual effects of previous activities might remain. Emissions of indoor activities involving combustion or high-temperature processes significantly elevated the indoor-to-outdoor (I/O) ratios for a majority of organic species. In addition, gas-to-particle partitioning, secondary formation, carrying-over (residues of pollutants in the air), and re-emission also modulated the I/O ratios of some compounds. Chemically comprehensive emission profiles of speciated organics were obtained for 5 indoor activities in the residence. While the indoor contribution to PM-bound OM was estimated to be not higher than 13.1% during the undisturbed period, carrying-over and/or re-emission seemed to exist for certain compounds emitted from cigarette smoking and incense burning. This study enhances knowledge on emissions and airborne fate of speciated organics in indoor PM.

Indoor black carbon and brown carbon concentrations from cooking and outdoor penetration: insights from the HOMEChem study

Particle emissions from cooking are a major contributor to residential indoor air pollution and could also contribute to ambient concentrations. An important constituent of these emissions is light-absorbing carbon, including black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC). This work characterizes the contributions of indoor and outdoor sources of BC and BrC to the indoor environment by concurrently measuring real-time concentrations of these air pollutants indoors and outdoors during the month-long HOMEChem study. The median indoor-to-outdoor ratios of BC and BrC during the periods of no activity inside the test house were 0.6 and 0.7, respectively. The absorption Ångström exponent was used to characterize light-absorbing particle emissions during different activities and ranged from 1.1 to 2.7 throughout the campaign, with the highest value (indicative of BrC-dominated emissions) observed during the preparation of a simulated Thanksgiving Day holiday style meal. An indoor BC exposure assessment shows that exposure for an occupant present in the kitchen area was ∼4 times higher during Thanksgiving Day experiments (primarily due to candle burning) when compared to the background conditions.

Real-time characterization of aerosol particle composition, sources and influences of increased ventilation and humidity in an office

Most of human exposure to atmospheric pollutants occurs indoors, and the components of outdoor aerosols may have been changed in the way before reaching indoor spaces. Here we conducted real-time online measurements of mass concentrations and chemical composition of black carbon and the non-refractory species in PM_2.5 in an occupied office for approximately one month. The open-close windows and controlled dampness experiments were also performed. Our results show that indoor aerosol species primarily originate from outdoors with indoor/outdoor ratio of these species typically less than unity except for certain organic aerosol (OA) factors. All aerosol species went through filtration upon transport indoors. Ammonium nitrate and fossil fuel OA underwent evaporation or particle-to-gas partitioning, while less oxidized secondary OA (SOA) underwent secondary formation and cooking OA might have indoor sources. With higher particulate matter (PM) mass concentration outdoors than in the office, elevated natural ventilation increased PM exposure indoors and this increased exposure was prolonged when outdoor PM was scavenged. We found that increasing humidity in the office led to higher indoor PM mass concentration particularly more oxidized SOA. Overall, our results highlight that indoor exposure of occupants is substantially different from outdoor in terms of mass concentrations and chemical species.

Evaluating Indoor Air Chemical Diversity, Indoor-to-Outdoor Emissions, and Surface Reservoirs Using High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Detailed offline speciation of gas- and particle-phase organic compounds was conducted using gas/liquid chromatography with traditional and high-resolution mass spectrometers in a hybrid targeted/nontargeted analysis. Observations were focused on an unoccupied home and were compared to two other indoor sites. Observed gas-phase organic compounds span the volatile to semivolatile range, while functionalized organic aerosols extend from intermediate volatility to ultra-low volatility, including a mix of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur-containing species. Total gas-phase abundances of hydrocarbon and oxygenated gas-phase complex mixtures were elevated indoors and strongly correlated in the unoccupied home. While gas-phase concentrations of individual compounds generally decreased slightly with greater ventilation, their elevated ratios relative to controlled emissions of tracer species suggest that the dilution of gas-phase concentrations increases off-gassing from surfaces and other indoor reservoirs, with volatility-dependent responses to dynamically changing environmental factors. Indoor-outdoor emissions of gas-phase intermediate-volatility/semivolatile organic hydrocarbons from the unoccupied home averaged 6-11 mg h^-1, doubling with ventilation. While the largest single-compound emissions observed were furfural (61-275 mg h^-1) and acetic acid, observations spanned a wide range of individual volatile chemical products (e.g., terpenoids, glycol ethers, phthalates, other oxygenates), highlighting the abundance of long-lived reservoirs resulting from prior indoor use or materials, and their gradual transport outdoors.

Improving Predictions of Indoor Aerosol Concentrations of Outdoor Origin by Considering the Phase Change of Semivolatile Material Driven by Temperature and Mass-Loading Gradients

Outdoor aerosols experience environmental changes as they are transported indoors, including outdoor-to-indoor temperature and mass-loading gradients, which can reduce or enhance their indoor concentrations due to repartitioning driven by changes in thermodynamic equilibrium states. However, the complexity required to model repartitioning typically hinders its inclusion in studies predicting indoor exposure to ambient aerosols. To facilitate exposure predictions, this work used an explicit thermodynamic indoor aerosol model to simulate outdoor-to-indoor aerosol repartitioning typical for residential and office buildings across the 16 U.S. climate zones over an annual time horizon. Results demonstrate that neglecting repartitioning when predicting indoor concentrations can produce errors of up to 80-100% for hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol, 40-60% for total organic aerosol, 400% for ammonium nitrate, and 60% (typically 3 μg/m³) for the total PM_2.5 aerosol. Underpredictions were more likely for buildings in hotter than colder regions, and for residences than offices, since both cooler indoor air and more meaningful residential organic aerosol concentrations encourage condensation of semivolatile organics. Furthermore, a method for computing correction factors to more easily account for thermodynamic repartitioning is provided. Applying these correction factors to mechanical-only aerosol predictions significantly reduced errors to <0.5 μg/m³ for the total indoor PM_2.5 while bypassing explicit thermodynamic simulations.

Urban Emissions of Nitrogen Oxides, Carbon Monoxide, and Methane Determined from Ground-Based Measurements in Philadelphia

Nitrogen oxides (NO_X) and methane impact air quality through the promotion of ozone formation, and methane is also a strong greenhouse gas. Despite the importance of these pollutants, emissions in urban areas are poorly quantified. We present measurements of NO_X, CH₄, CO, and CO₂ made at Drexel University in Philadelphia along with NO_X and CO observations at two roadside monitors. Because CO₂ concentrations in the winter result almost entirely from combustion with negligible influence from photosynthesis and respiration, we are able to infer fleet-averaged fuel-based emission factors (EFs) for NO_X and CO, similar in some ways to how EFs are determined from tunnel studies. Comparison of the inferred NO_X and CO fuel-based EF to the National Emissions Inventory (NEI) suggests errors in NEI emissions of either NO_X, CO, or both. From the measurements of CH₄ and CO₂, which are not emitted by the same sources, we infer the ratio of CH₄ emissions (from leaks in the natural gas infrastructure) to CO₂ emissions (from fossil fuel combustion) in Philadelphia. Comparison of the CH₄/CO₂ emission ratios to emission inventories from the Environmental Protection Agency suggests underestimates in CH₄ emissions by almost a factor of 4. These results demonstrate the need for the addition of long-term observations of CH₄ and CO₂ to existing monitoring networks in urban areas to better constrain emissions and complement existing measurements of NO_X and CO.

Pollen and Fungal Spores Evaluation in Relation to Occupants and Microclimate in Indoor Workplaces

Indoor air quality depends on many internal or external factors mutually interacting in a dynamic and complex system, which also includes indoor workplaces, where subjects are exposed to many pollutants, including biocontaminants such as pollen and fungal spores. In this context, the occupants interact actively with their environment through actions, modifying indoor environmental conditions to achieve their own thermal comfort. Actions such as opening/closing doors and windows and turning on/off air conditioning could have effects on workers’ health. The present study explored the contribution of human occupants to pollen and fungal spore levels in indoor workplaces, combining aerobiological, microclimate, and worker monitoring during summer and winter campaigns. We evaluated the overall time spent by the workers in the office, the workers’ actions regarding non-working days and working days, and non-working hours and working hours, during two campaigns of pollen and fungal spore monitoring. Our results showed that the biocontaminant values depend on many mutually interacting factors; hence, the role of all of the factors involved should be investigated. In this regard, aerobiological monitoring should be a valid tool for the management of occupational allergies, providing additional information to improve occupational health protection strategies.

Real-time organic aerosol chemical speciation in the indoor environment using extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

Understanding the sources and composition of organic aerosol (OA) in indoor environments requires rapid measurements, since many emissions and processes have short timescales. However, real-time molecular-level OA measurements have not been reported indoors. Here, we present quantitative measurements, at a time resolution of five seconds, of molecular ions corresponding to diverse aerosol-phase species, by applying extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (EESI-MS) to indoor air analysis for the first time, as part of the highly instrumented HOMEChem field study. We demonstrate how the complex spectra of EESI-MS are screened in order to extract chemical information and investigate the possibility of interference from gas-phase semivolatile species. During experiments that simulated the Thanksgiving US holiday meal preparation, EESI-MS quantified multiple species, including fatty acids, carbohydrates, siloxanes, and phthalates. Intercomparisons with Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer suggest that EESI-MS quantified a large fraction of OA. Comparisons with FIGAERO-CIMS shows similar signal levels and good correlation, with a range of 100 for the relative sensitivities. Comparisons with SV-TAG for phthalates and with SV-TAG and AMS for total siloxanes also show strong correlation. EESI-MS observations can be used with gas-phase measurements to identify co-emitted gas- and aerosol-phase species, and this is demonstrated using complementary gas-phase PTR-MS observations.

Indoor acids and bases

Numerous acids and bases influence indoor air quality. The most abundant of these species are CO₂ (acidic) and NH₃ (basic), both emitted by building occupants. Other prominent inorganic acids are HNO₃ , HONO, SO₂ , H₂ SO₄ , HCl, and HOCl. Prominent organic acids include formic, acetic, and lactic; nicotine is a noteworthy organic base. Sources of N-, S-, and Cl-containing acids can include ventilation from outdoors, indoor combustion, consumer product use, and chemical reactions. Organic acids are commonly more abundant indoors than outdoors, with indoor sources including occupants, wood, and cooking. Beyond NH₃ and nicotine, other noteworthy bases include inorganic and organic amines. Acids and bases partition indoors among the gas-phase, airborne particles, bulk water, and surfaces; relevant thermodynamic parameters governing the partitioning are the acid-dissociation constant (K_a ), Henry's law constant (K_H ), and the octanol-air partition coefficient (K_oa ). Condensed-phase water strongly influences the fate of indoor acids and bases and is also a medium for chemical interactions. Indoor surfaces can be large reservoirs of acids and bases. This extensive review of the state of knowledge establishes a foundation for future inquiry to better understand how acids and bases influence the suitability of indoor environments for occupants, cultural artifacts, and sensitive equipment.

Indoor Particulate Matter during HOMEChem: Concentrations, Size Distributions, and Exposures

It is important to improve our understanding of exposure to particulate matter (PM) in residences because of associated health risks. The HOMEChem campaign was conducted to investigate indoor chemistry in a manufactured test house during prescribed everyday activities, such as cooking, cleaning, and opening doors and windows. This paper focuses on measured size distributions of PM (0.001-20 μm), along with estimated exposures and respiratory-tract deposition. Number concentrations were highest for sub-10 nm particles during cooking using a propane-fueled stovetop. During some cooking activities, calculated PM_2.5 mass concentrations (assuming a density of 1 g cm^-3) exceeded 250 μg m^-3, and exposure during the postcooking decay phase exceeded that of the cooking period itself. The modeled PM respiratory deposition for an adult residing in the test house kitchen for 12 h varied from 7 μg on a day with no indoor activities to 68 μg during a simulated day (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner preparation interspersed by cleaning activities) and rose to 149 μg during a simulated Thanksgiving day.

Seasonal effects of ambient PM2.5 on the cardiovascular system of hyperlipidemic mice

People in polluted communities are often exposed to both PM and ozone (O₃), albeit not always simultaneously; an important question is whether exposure to particles with seasonal compositional differences can influence biological outcomes. We addressed this question using a mouse model of cardiovascular disease by contrasting the health outcomes of exposures to particles formed or aged during periods of relatively high photochemical activity (i.e. spring/summer), which has increased ambient O₃ concentrations, with outcomes of exposures to fall/winter particles which are associated with lower O₃ concentrations. Electrocardiographs (ECGs) and blood pressures (BPs) were acquired following exposures to concentrated ambient particles (CAPs). ECGs were analyzed to changes in specific waveform parameters and changes in heart rate variability (HRV). Exposures elicited several types of waveform abnormalities that were associated with seasonal differences in particle constituents. Alterations in R-R interval and P-R interval were seen following exposure to summer CAPs but not fall CAPs and differential responses were seen in the corrected Q-T interval following the two seasonal exposures. Measures of HRV increased after exposure to summer CAPs compared to air-exposed controls but not following the winter CAPs exposure. There were chemical differences with respect to the organic constituents in ambient particles between summer and fall aerosol. The oxygen to carbon ratios (O:C) were generally higher in the spring and summer than in the fall, consistent with seasonal differences in atmospheric photochemical activity. Seasonal differences in atmospheric photochemical activity can modify ambient aerosol composition and can alter biological responses in the cardiovascular system. The results from this study confirm that ambient photochemical activity can alter the toxicity of ambient PM. Regional and seasonal differences in PM_2.5 composition should be important considerations when evaluating the effects of PM exposure on cardiovascular health.Implications: Particles formed during periods of high photochemical activity (e.g. spring/summer) elicit more adverse cardiovascular health effects than particles formed during periods of low photochemical activity (e.g. fall/winter). Seasonal differences in atmospheric photochemical activity modified ambient aerosol composition and worsened cardiovascular responses. These results can inform regulatory agencies and may help design air quality regulations for PM2.5 that consider seasonal and regional variations.

A chemical dynamic model for the infiltration of outdoor size-resolved ammonium nitrate aerosols to indoor environments

In the present study, we developed a chemical dynamic model to describe the infiltration of size-resolved ammonium nitrate aerosols from outdoor to indoor environments. This model considered the penetration factor, deposition rate, and the reversible reaction process, which was quantified by the diffusive molar flux on the surface of ammonium nitrate aerosols depending on indoor temperature, humidity, and concentrations of nitric acid (HNO₃ ) and ammonia (NH₃ ). To verify the model, we employed a single-particle aerosol mass spectrometer with an automated switching system to simultaneously measure size-resolved outdoor and indoor ammonium nitrate aerosols. Comparisons between the predicted and measured concentrations of these aerosols showed a mean relative error of 4.8 ± 18.3%. To analyze the sensitivity of model parameters, several parameters were perturbed. This analysis indicated that parameters related to HNO₃ were more sensitive than those related to NH₃ because the indoor gas phase concentration of NH₃ was much higher than that of HNO₃ .

Analysis of indoor particles and gases and their evolution with natural ventilation

The air composition and reactivity from outdoor and indoor mixing field campaign was conducted to investigate the impacts of natural ventilation (ie, window opening and closing) on indoor air quality. In this study, a thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatograph (TAG) obtained measurements of indoor particle- and gas-phase semi- and intermediately volatile organic compounds both inside and outside a single-family test home. Together with measurements from a suite of instruments, we use TAG data to evaluate changes in indoor particles and gases at three natural ventilation periods. Positive matrix factorization was performed on TAG and adsorbent tube data to explore five distinct chemical and physical processes occurring in the indoor environment. Outdoor-to-indoor transport is observed for sulfate, isoprene epoxydiols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy alkanes. Dilution of indoor species is observed for volatile, non-reactive species including methylcyclohexane and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane. Window opening drives enhanced emissions of semi- and intermediately volatile species including TXIB, DEET, diethyl phthalate, and carvone from indoor surfaces. Formation via enhanced oxidation was observed for nonanal and 2-decanone when outdoor oxidants entered the home. Finally, oxidative depletion of gas-phase terpenes (eg, limonene and α-pinene) was anticipated but not observed due to limited measurement resolution and dynamically changing conditions.
