Chemically non-perturbing SERS detection of a catalytic reaction with black silicon

Cascade Bowl Multicavity Structure for In Situ Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Detection of Organic Gas Molecules

With the increasing emphasis on atmospheric environmental protection, it is crucial to find an efficient, direct, and accurate method to identify pollutant species in the atmosphere. To solve this problem, we designed and prepared the cascade multicavity (CMC) structure composed with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with favorable light transmittance and flexibility. The multicavity structure distributed on the surface introducing the homogeneous connecting holes endows the structure to more fully utilize the incident light while slowing the gas movement rate. Theoretical and experimental results have demonstrated that the Ag NPs/cascade multicavity (Ag-CMC) SERS substrate is a highly sensitive SERS substrate that can be used for in situ detection of gases under non-perpendicularly incident laser irradiation or bending of the substrate. We believe that the SERS substrate can provide a more efficient and feasible way for in situ detection of gaseous pollutants.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Matrix Metalloproteinase 2 Activity Using a Ratiometric Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Nanosensor with a Core-Satellite Structure

Matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) has been considered a promising molecular biomarker for cancer diagnosis due to its related dysregulation. In this work, a core-satellite structure-powered ratiometric surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanosensor with high sensitivity and specificity to MMP-2 was developed. The SERS nanosensor was composed of a magnetic bead encapsulated within a 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB)-labeled gold shell as the capture core and a 4-mercaptobenzonitrile (MBN)-encoded silver nanoparticle as the signal satellite, which were connected through a peptide substrate of MMP-2. MMP-2-triggered cleavage of peptides from the core surface resulted in a decrease of the SERS intensity of MBN. Since the SERS intensity of DTNB was used as an internal standard, the reliable and sensitive quantification of MMP-2 activity would be realized by the ratiometric SERS signal, with a limit of detection as low as 2.067 ng/mL and a dynamic range from 5 to 100 ng/mL. Importantly, the nanosensor enabled a precise determination of MMP-2 activity in tumor cell secretions, which may provide an avenue for early diagnosis and classification of malignant tumors.

Noble-Metal Nanoparticle-Embedded Silicon Nanogratings via Single-Step Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structuring

Here, we show that direct femtosecond laser nanostructuring of monocrystalline Si wafers in aqueous solutions containing noble-metal precursors (such as palladium dichloride, potassium hexachloroplatinate, and silver nitrate) allows for the creation of nanogratings decorated with mono- (Pd, Pt, and Ag) and bimetallic (Pd-Pt) nanoparticles (NPs). Multi-pulse femtosecond-laser exposure was found to drive periodically modulated ablation of the Si surface, while simultaneous thermal-induced reduction of the metal-containing acids and salts causes local surface morphology decoration with functional noble metal NPs. The orientation of the formed Si nanogratings with their nano-trenches decorated with noble-metal NPs can be controlled by the polarization direction of the incident laser beam, which was justified, for both linearly polarized Gaussian and radially (azimuthally) polarized vector beams. The produced hybrid NP-decorated Si nanogratings with a radially varying nano-trench orientation demonstrated anisotropic antireflection performance, as well as photocatalytic activity, probed by SERS tracing of the paraaminothiophenol-to-dimercaptoazobenzene transformation. The developed single-step maskless procedure of liquid-phase Si surface nanostructuring that proceeds simultaneously with the localized reduction of noble-metal precursors allows for the formation of hybrid Si nanogratings with controllable amounts of mono- and bimetallic NPs, paving the way toward applications in heterogeneous catalysis, optical detection, light harvesting, and sensing.

Light Harvesting Nanoprobe for Trace Detection of Hg2+ in Water

The continuously increasing flow of toxic heavy metals to the environment due to intensive industrial activity and tightening requirements with regard to the content of metal ions in drinking and discharged waters urges the development of affordable and sensitive devices to the field control of pollutants. Here, we report a new thiated Rhodamine-lactam probe for Hg2+ detection and demonstrate how its sensitivity can be increased via the incorporation of the probe molecules into the optically transparent siloxane-acrylate coatings on polymethyl methacrylate and, alternatively, into the water-dispersible light-harvesting FRET nanoparticles (NPs), in which dye cations are separated by fluorinated tetraphenylborate anions. We have shown that the optimization of the FRET NPs composition had allowed it to reach the antenna effect of ~300 and fabricate "off/on" sensor for Hg2+ ion determination in aqueous solutions with the detection limit of ~100 pM, which is far below the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of mercury in drinking water recommended by the World Health Organization. Although this work is more proof-of-concept than a ready-to-use analytical procedure, the suggested approaches to fabrication of the FRET NPs based on the popular rhodamine-lactam platform can be used as a background for the development of low-cost portable sensing devices for the extra-laboratory determination of hazardous metal ions.

Dual-Scale Textured Broadband Si-Based Light Absorber

Various antireflective structures and methods are proposed to solve the optical loss of Si-based absorber devices. Dual-scale structures have received more concern from researchers in recent years. In this study, the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is employed to investigate deeply the dependence of optical response on the geometric shape and size of structures. The micron cone shows lower reflectivity than other micron structures. Additionally, the lowest reflectivity region moves with the increasing height size of the cone structure. We proposed creatively a nanoripple-cone structure that maintains low reflectivity properties under varying incident angles whether in the visible region or the near-infrared region. Furthermore, the lower reflectivity is obtained with increasing micron cone and decreasing nanoripple. Finally, the dual-scale nanoripple-cone is fabricated directly and cost-effectively by a femtosecond laser instead of a two-step texture-on-texture way. The measured result shows that the high absorption above 98% extends to the mid-infrared region. This study provides directions for the fabrication of wideband Si-based absorber devices to reduce reflectivity, which exhibits a wide application potential and promotes the evolution of multi-laser processing.

Ag-Decorated Si Microspheres Produced by Laser Ablation in Liquid: All-in-One Temperature-Feedback SERS-Based Platform for Nanosensing

Combination of dissimilar materials such as noble metals and common semiconductors within unified nanomaterials holds promise for optoelectronics, catalysis and optical sensing. Meanwhile, difficulty of obtaining such hybrid nanomaterials using common lithography-based techniques stimulates an active search for advanced, inexpensive, and straightforward fabrication methods. Here, we report one-pot one-step synthesis of Ag-decorated Si microspheres via nanosecond laser ablation of monocrystalline silicon in isopropanol containing AgNO3. Laser ablation of bulk silicon creates the suspension of the Si microspheres that host further preferential growth of Ag nanoclusters on their surface upon thermal-induced decomposition of AgNO3 species by subsequently incident laser pulses. The amount of the AgNO3 in the working solution controls the density, morphology, and arrangement of the Ag nanoclusters allowing them to achieve strong and uniform decoration of the Si microsphere surface. Such unique morphology makes Ag-decorated Si microspheres promising for molecular identification based on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect. In particular, the designed single-particles sensing platform was shown to offer temperature-feedback modality as well as SERS signal enhancement up to 106, allowing reliable detection of the adsorbed molecules and tracing their plasmon-driven catalytic transformations. Considering the ability to control the decoration degree of Si microspheres by Ag nanoclusters via amount of the AgNO3, the developed one-pot easy-to-implement PLAL synthesis holds promise for gram-scale production of high-quality hybrid nanomaterial for various nanophotonics and sensing applications.

Trends in Application of SERS Substrates beyond Ag and Au, and Their Role in Bioanalysis

This article compares the applications of traditional gold and silver-based SERS substrates and less conventional (Pd/Pt, Cu, Al, Si-based) SERS substrates, focusing on sensing, biosensing, and clinical analysis. In recent decades plethora of new biosensing and clinical SERS applications have fueled the search for more cost-effective, scalable, and stable substrates since traditional gold and silver-based substrates are quite expensive, prone to corrosion, contamination and non-specific binding, particularly by S-containing compounds. Following that, we briefly described our experimental experience with Si and Al-based SERS substrates and systematically analyzed the literature on SERS on substrate materials such as Pd/Pt, Cu, Al, and Si. We tabulated and discussed figures of merit such as enhancement factor (EF) and limit of detection (LOD) from analytical applications of these substrates. The results of the comparison showed that Pd/Pt substrates are not practical due to their high cost; Cu-based substrates are less stable and produce lower signal enhancement. Si and Al-based substrates showed promising results, particularly in combination with gold and silver nanostructures since they could produce comparable EFs and LODs as conventional substrates. In addition, their stability and relatively low cost make them viable alternatives for gold and silver-based substrates. Finally, this review highlighted and compared the clinical performance of non-traditional SERS substrates and traditional gold and silver SERS substrates. We discovered that if we take the average sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of clinical SERS assays reported in the literature, those parameters, particularly accuracy (93-94%), are similar for SERS bioassays on AgNP@Al, Si-based, Au-based, and Ag-based substrates. We hope that this review will encourage research into SERS biosensing on aluminum, silicon, and some other substrates. These Al and Si based substrates may respond efficiently to the major challenges to the SERS practical application. For instance, they may be not only less expensive, e.g., Al foil, but also in some cases more selective and sometimes more reproducible, when compared to gold-only or silver-only based SERS substrates. Overall, it may result in a greater diversity of applicable SERS substrates, allowing for better optimization and selection of the SERS substrate for a specific sensing/biosensing or clinical application.

FRET pumping of rhodamine-based probe in light-harvesting nanoparticles for highly sensitive detection of Cu2

In this work we presented novel strategy for increasing the performance of popular fluorescent probes on the basis of rhodamine-lactam platform. This strategy is based on the incorporation of probe molecules into the light-harvesting nanoparticles to pump modulated optical signal by Förster resonant energy transfer. Using the commercially available Cu²⁺ probe as a reference chemical, we have developed an efficient approach to significantly improve its sensing performance. Within obtained nanoparticles coumarin-30 nanoantenna absorbs excitation light and pumps incorporated sensing molecules providing bright fluorescence to a small number of emitters, while changing the probe-analyte equilibrium from liquid-liquid to solid-liquid significantly increased the apparent association constant, which together provided a ∼100-fold decrease in the detection limit. The developed nanoprobe allows highly sensitive detection of Cu²⁺ ions in aqueous media without organic co-solvents usually required for dissolution of the probe, and demonstrate compatibility with inexpensive fluorometers and the ability to detect low concentrations with the naked eye.

Evaluating the Optical Response of Heavily Decorated Black Silicon Based on a Realistic 3D Modeling Methodology

Combining black silicon (BS), a nanostructured silicon containing highly roughened surface morphology with plasmonic materials, is becoming an attractive approach for greatly enhancing light-matter interactions with promising applications of sensing and light harvesting. However, precisely describing the optical response of a heavily decorated BS structure is still challenging due to the increasing complexity in surface morphology and plasmon hybridization. Here, we propose and fully characterize BS-based multistacked nanostructures with randomly distributed nanoparticles on the highly roughened nonflat surface. We demonstrate a realistic 3D modeling methodology based on parametrized scanning electron microscopy images that provides high-precision morphology details, successfully linking the theoretical analysis with experimental optical response of the complex nanostructures. Far-field calculations very nicely reproduce experimental reflectance spectra, revealing the dependency of light trapping on the thickness of the conformal reflector and the atop nanoparticle size. Near-field analysis clearly identifies three types of stochastic "hotspots". Their contribution to the overall field enhancement is shown to be very much sensitive to the nanoscale surface morphology. The simulated near-field property is then used to examine the measured surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) response on the multistacked structures. The present modeling approach combined with spectroscopic characterizations is expected to offer a powerful tool for the precise description of the optical response of other large-scale highly disordered realistic 3D systems.

Deep Subwavelength Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures on Silicon as a Novel Multifunctional Biosensing Platform

Strong light localization inside the nanoscale gaps provides remarkable opportunities for creation of various medical and biosensing platforms stimulating an active search for inexpensive and easily scalable fabrication at a sub-100 nm resolution. In this paper, self-organized laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) with the shortest ever reported periodicity of 70 ± 10 nm were directly imprinted on the crystalline Si wafer upon its direct femtosecond-laser ablation in isopropanol. Appearance of such a nanoscale morphology was explained by the formation of a periodic topography on the surface of photoexcited Si driven by interference phenomena as well as subsequent down-scaling of the imprinted grating period via Rayleigh-Taylor hydrodynamic instability. The produced deep subwavelength LIPSSs demonstrate strong anisotropic anti-reflection performance, ensuring efficient delivery of the incident far-field radiation to the electromagnetic "hot spots" localized in the Si nanogaps. This allows realization of various optical biosensing platforms operating via strong interactions of quantum emitters with nanoscale light fields. The demonstrated 80-fold enhancement of spontaneous emission from the attached nanolayer of organic dye molecules and in situ optical tracing of catalytic molecular transformations substantiate bare and metal-capped deep subwavelength Si LIPSSs as a promising inexpensive multifunctional biosensing platform.

Construction of Multifunctional and Adjustable Langmuir-Blodgett Composite Films Containing Black Phosphorus with High Stability for Optically Electrical Applications

Fabrication of composite thin-film materials based on black phosphorus (BP) will greatly broaden the applications of BP in various areas. However, it is still a challenge to prepare a BP-based composite film with good stability and controllable structure. In this work, a series of BP-based composite Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films are prepared by the self-assembly of polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified BP nanosheets (BPNSs) (BPNS-PEI) and dye molecules. The presence of PEI greatly improves the stability of BPNSs. As for BPNS-PEI and dye molecules, the electrostatic interactions or π-π stacking interactions ensure the formation of stable composite LB films. Due to the protonation and deprotonation of amino groups, the synthesized BPNS-PEI/dye composite films show a sensitive response to acid and alkali gases, which shows wide application prospects as a highly sensitive gas sensor. Furthermore, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) proves that the prepared LB films exhibit good reproducibility and obvious Raman enhancement effect on rhodamine 6G molecules. In addition, due to the high carrier transfer rate of the obtained composite films, they possess enhanced photocurrent generation performance than pure BPNS-PEI and pure dye films. The current work demonstrates an effective method for preparing the ordered self-assembled BP-based composite LB films with good SERS and photoelectric conversion performance.

Charge-Transfer Induced by the Oxygen Vacancy Defects in the Ag/MoO3 Composite System

In this paper, an Ag/MoO3 composite system was cosputtered by Ar plasma bombardment on a polystyrene (PS) colloidal microsphere array. The MoO3 formed by this method contained abundant oxygen vacancy defects, which provided a channel for charge transfer in the system and compensated for the wide band gap of MoO3. Various characterization methods strongly demonstrated the existence of oxygen vacancy defects and detected the properties of oxygen vacancies. 4-Aminothiophenol (p-aminothiophenol, PATP) was used as a candidate surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probe molecule to evaluate the contribution of the oxygen vacancy defects in the Ag/MoO3 composite system. Interestingly, oxygen vacancy defects are a kind of charge channel, and their powerful effect is fully reflected in their SERS spectra. Increasing the number of charge channels and increasing the utilization rate of the channels caused the frequency of SERS characteristic peaks to shift. This interesting phenomenon opens up a new horizon for the study of SERS in oxygen-containing semiconductors and provides a powerful reference for the study of PATP.

Synthesis and defect engineering of molybdenum oxides and their SERS applications

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has been developed into a cross-disciplinary analytical technology through exploring various materials' Raman vibrational modes with ultra-high sensitivity and specificity. Although conventional noble-metal based SERS substrates have achieved great success, oxide-semiconductor-based SERS substrates are attracting researchers' intensive interest due to their merits of facile fabrication, high uniformity and tunable SERS characteristics. Among all the SERS active oxide semiconductors, molybdenum oxides (MoO_x) possess exceptional advantages of high Raman enhancement factor, environmental stability, recyclable detection, etc. More interestingly, the SERS effect of the MoO_x SERS substrates may involve both the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism and the chemical enhancement mechanism, which is determined by the stoichiometry and morphology of the material. Therefore, the focus of this review will be on two critical points: (1) synthesis and material engineering methods of the functional MoO_x material and (2) MoO_x SERS mechanism and performance evaluation. First, we review recent works on the MoO_x preparation and material property tuning approaches. Second, the SERS mechanism and performance of various MoO_x substrates are surveyed. In particular, the performance uniformity, enhancement factor and recyclability are evaluated. In the end, we discuss several challenges and open questions related to further promoting the MoO_x as the SERS substrate for monitoring extremely low trace molecules and the theory for better understanding of the SERS enhancement mechanism.

Self-Assembled Black Phosphorus-Based Composite Langmuir-Blodgett Films with an Enhanced Photocurrent Generation Capability and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Properties

In this work, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) composite thin films were successfully prepared using black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS) and dye molecules. Black phosphorus (BP) was first exfoliated in isopropanol solution to form BPNS, and then, BPNS were modified with 4-azidobenzoic acid (Az-BPNS) to improve their stability. The characterization results showed that the synthesized Az-BPNS-dye LB films have a uniform and ordered structure. In addition, the synthesized Az-BPNS-dye LB films exhibit excellent photoelectrochemical performance, and Az-BPNS-methylene blue (MB) produces higher photocurrent compared to Az-BPNS-Neutral red (NR) films. The current work shows an effective way to prepare functionalized BP-based materials and provide evidence for their application in optoelectronic devices.

Black Au-Decorated TiO2 Produced via Laser Ablation in Liquid

The rational combination of plasmonic and all-dielectric concepts within hybrid nanomaterials provides a promising route toward devices with ultimate performance and extended modalities. Spectral matching of plasmonic and Mie-type resonances for such nanostructures can only be achieved for their dissimilar characteristic sizes, thus making the resulting hybrid nanostructure geometry complex for practical realization and large-scale replication. Here, we produced amorphous TiO₂ nanospheres decorated and doped with Au nanoclusters via single-step nanosecond-laser irradiation of commercially available TiO₂ nanopowders dispersed in aqueous HAuCl₄. Fabricated hybrids demonstrate remarkable light-absorbing properties (averaged value ≈96%) in the visible and near-IR spectral range mediated by bandgap reduction of the laser-processed amorphous TiO₂ as well as plasmon resonances of the decorating Au nanoclusters. The findings are supported by optical spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electromagnetic modeling. Light-absorbing and plasmonic properties of the produced hybrids were implemented to demonstrate catalytically passive SERS biosensor for identification of analytes at trace concentrations and solar steam generator that permitted to increase water evaporation rate by 2.5 times compared with that of pure water under identical 1 sun irradiation conditions.

Direct Femtosecond Laser Fabrication of Chemically Functionalized Ultra-Black Textures on Silicon for Sensing Applications

Here, we present the single-step laser-assisted fabrication of anti-reflective hierarchical surface textures on silicon locally functionalized with a photoluminescent (PL) molecular nanolayer. Using femtosecond-laser ablation of commercial crystalline Si wafers placed under a layer of a solution containing rhodamine 6G (R6G) a triethoxysilyl derivative, we fabricated ordered arrays of microconical protrusions with self-organized nanoscale surface morphology. At the same time, the laser-induced temperature increase facilitated surface activation and local binding of the R6G derivative to the as-fabricated nanotextured surface. The produced dual-scale surface textures showed remarkable broadband (visible to near-IR) light-absorbing properties with an averaged reflectivity of around 1%, and the capping molecular nanolayer demonstrated a strongly enhanced PL yield. By performing a pH sensing test using the produced nanotextured substrate, we confirmed the retention of sensory properties of the molecules attached to the surface and validated the potential applicability of the high-performing liquid-assisted laser processing as a key technology for the development of innovative multifunctional sensing devices in which the textured substrate (e.g., ultra-black semiconductor) plays a dual role as a support and PL signal amplifier.

Recent Progress of Black Silicon: From Fabrications to Applications

Since black silicon was discovered by coincidence, the special material was explored for many amazing material characteristics in optical, surface topography, and so on. Because of the material property, black silicon is applied in many spheres of a photodetector, photovoltaic cell, photo-electrocatalysis, antibacterial surfaces, and sensors. With the development of fabrication technology, black silicon has expanded in more and more applications and has become a research hotspot. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the fabricating method of black silicon, including nanosecond or femtosecond laser irradiation, metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE), reactive ion etching (RIE), wet chemical etching, electrochemical method, and plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) methods. In addition, this review focuses on the progress in multiple black silicon applications in the past 10 years. Finally, the prospect of black silicon fabricating and various applications are outlined.

Second Harmonic Generation from Phase-Engineered Metasurfaces of Nanoprisms

Metasurfaces of gold (Au) nanoparticles on a SiO2-Si substrate were fabricated for the enhancement of second harmonic generation (SHG) using electron beam lithography and lift-off. Triangular Au nanoprisms which are non-centro-symmetric and support second-order nonlinearity were examined for SHG. The thickness of the SiO2 spacer is shown to be an effective parameter to tune for maximising SHG. Electrical field enhancement at the fundamental wavelength was shown to define the SHG intensity. Numerical modeling of light enhancement was verified by experimental measurements of SHG and reflectivity spectra at the normal incidence. At the plasmonic resonance, SHG is enhanced up to ∼3.5 × 103 times for the optimised conditions.

A Comparative Study on the Oxidation of Label-Free Silver Triangular Nanoplates by Peroxides: Main Effects and Sensing Applications

Nowadays, analytical systems based on silver triangular nanoplates (AgTNPs) have been shown as good prospects for chemical sensing. However, they still remain relatively poorly studied as colorimetric probes for sensing various classes of compounds. This study shows that these nanoparticles are capable of being oxidized by peroxides, including both hydrogen peroxide and its organic derivatives. The oxidation was found to result in a decrease in the AgTNPs' local surface plasmon resonance band intensity at 620 nm. This was proposed for peroxide-sensitive spectrophotometric determination. Five peroxides differing in their structure and number of functional groups were tested. Three of them easily oxidized AgTNPs. The effects of a structure of analytes and main exterior factors on the oxidation are discussed. The detection limits of peroxides in the selected conditions increased in the series peracetic acid < hydrogen peroxide < tert-butyl hydroperoxide, coming to 0.08, 1.6 and 24 μmol L^-1, respectively. tert-Butyl peroxybenzoate and di-tert-butyl peroxide were found to have no effect on the spectral characteristics of AgTNPs. By the example of hydrogen peroxide, it was found that the determination does not interfere with 100-4000-fold quantities of common inorganic ions. The proposed approach was successfully applied to the analysis of drugs, cosmetics and model mixtures.

Hierarchical anti-reflective laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) on amorphous Si films for sensing applications

Here, we applied direct laser-induced periodic surface structuring to drive the phase transition of amorphous silicon (a-Si) into nanocrystalline (nc) Si imprinted as regular arrangement of Si nanopillars passivated with a SiO2 layer. By varying the laser beam scanning speed at a fixed pulse energy, we successfully tailored the resulting unique surface morphology of the formed LIPSSs that change from ordered arrangement of conical protrusions to highly uniform surface gratings, where sub-wavelength scale ripples decorate the valleys between near-wavelength scale ridges. Along with the surface morphology, the nc-Si/SiO2 volume ratio can also be controlled via laser processing parameters allowing the tailoring of the optical properties of the produced textured surfaces to achieve anti-reflection performance or partial transmission in the visible spectral range. Diverse hierarchical LIPSSs can be fabricated and replicated over large-scale areas opening a pathway for various applications including optical sensors, nanoscale temperature management, and solar light harvesting. By taking advantage of good wettability, enlarged surface area and remarkable light-trapping characteristics of the produced hierarchical morphologies, we demonstrated the first LIPSS-based surface enhanced fluorescent sensor that allowed the identification of metal cations providing a sub-nM detection limit unachievable by conventional fluorescence measurements in solutions.

Plasmonic Nanoparticle Film for Low-Power NIR-Enhanced Photocatalytic Reaction

Plasmonic metal nanostructures offer the unique ability to effectively enhance sunlight harvesting by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), which can induce direct photocatalytic reactions. However, only metal nanoparticles with a relatively low magnitude of electromagnetic field enhancement usually require a high illumination intensity to ensure the catalytic performance, which greatly limits the solar photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we designed plasmonic Au nanoparticle film with high electromagnetic field enhancement to achieve high-efficiency catalytic activity under low-power NIR light illumination. This work minimized the influence of the photothermal effect on the reaction by using a low illumination intensity and further revealed the main contribution of plasmon-excited hot electrons to the photochemical reaction. This study provides important insights into the study of the mechanism of LSPR in photocatalytic reactions and further improves the efficiency of solar energy utilization.

Ultrasensitive SERS-Based Plasmonic Sensor with Analyte Enrichment System Produced by Direct Laser Writing

We report an easy-to-implement device for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based detection of various analytes dissolved in water droplets at trace concentrations. The device combines an analyte-enrichment system and SERS-active sensor site, both produced via inexpensive and high-performance direct femtosecond (fs)-laser printing. Fabricated on a surface of water-repellent polytetrafluoroethylene substrate as an arrangement of micropillars, the analyte-enrichment system supports evaporating water droplet in the Cassie-Baxter superhydrophobic state, thus ensuring delivery of the dissolved analyte molecules towards the hydrophilic SERS-active site. The efficient pre-concentration of the analyte onto the sensor site based on densely arranged spiky plasmonic nanotextures results in its subsequent label-free identification by means of SERS spectroscopy. Using the proposed device, we demonstrate reliable SERS-based fingerprinting of various analytes, including common organic dyes and medical drugs at ppb concentrations. The proposed device is believed to find applications in various areas, including label-free environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and forensics.

Surface-Enhanced IR-Absorption Microscopy of Staphylococcus aureus Bacteria on Bactericidal Nanostructured Si Surfaces

Surface-enhanced IR absorption (SEIRA) microscopy was used to reveal main chemical and physical interactions between Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and different laser-nanostructured bactericidal Si surfaces via simultaneous chemical enhancement of the corresponding IR-absorption in the intact functional chemical groups. A cleaner, less passivated surface of Si nanoripples, laser-patterned in water, exhibits much stronger enhancement of SEIRA signals compared to the bare Si wafer, the surface coating of oxidized Si nanoparticles and oxidized/carbonized Si (nano) ripples, laser-patterned in air and water. Additional very strong bands emerge in the SEIRA spectra on the clean Si nanoripples, indicating the potential chemical modifications in the bacterial membrane and nucleic acids during the bactericidal effect.

Ultratrace Nitroaromatic Vapor Detection via Surface-Enhanced Fluorescence on Carbazole-Terminated Black Silicon

Detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) is an important applied task for environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and forensic analysis. However, detection of NAC vapors is challenging owing to their low vapor pressure and relatively weak sensitivity of the existing detection techniques. Here, we propose a novel concept to design fluorescence (FL) detection platforms based on chemical functionalization of nanotextured dielectric surfaces exhibiting resonant light absorption, trapping, and localization effects. We demonstrate highly-efficient NAC vapor sensor with selective FL-quenching response from monolayers of carbazole moieties covalently bonded to a spiky silicon surface, "black" silicon, produced over the centimeter-scale area using simple reactive ion etching. The sensor is shown to provide unprecedented ppt (10^-12) range limits of detection for several NAC vapors. Easy-to-implement scalable fabrication procedure combined with simple and versatile functionalization techniques applicable to all-dielectric surfaces make the suggested concept promising for realization of various gas sensing systems for social and environmental safety applications.

Si1-xGex nanoantennas with a tailored Raman response and light-to-heat conversion for advanced sensing applications

Active light-emitting all-dielectric nanoantennas recently have demonstrated great potential as highly efficient nanoscale light sources owing to their strong luminescent and Raman responses. However, their large-scale fabrication faces a number of problems related to productivity limits of existing lithography techniques. Thus, high-throughput fabrication strategies allowing in a facile way to tailor of the nanoantenna emission and thermal properties in the process of their fabrication are highly desirable for various applications. Here, we propose a cost-effective approach to large-scale fabrication of Si1-xGex alloyed Mie nanoresonators possessing an enhanced inherent Raman response which can be simply tailored via tuning the Ge concentration. Moreover, by tailoring the relative Ge composition one can gradually change a complex refractive index of the produced Si1-xGex alloy, which affects the ratio between radiative and nonradiative losses in Si1-xGex nanoantennas, which is crucial for optimization of their optical heating efficiency. Composition-tunable Si1-xGex nanoantennas with an optimized size, light-to-heat conversion and Raman response are implemented for non-invasive sensing of 4-aminothiophenol molecules with a temperature feedback modality and high subwavelength spatial resolution. The results are important for advanced multichannel optical sensing, providing information on analyte's composition, analyte-nanoantenna temperature response and spatial position.

On-demand concentration of an analyte on laser-printed polytetrafluoroethylene

Controllable targeted deposition of an analyte dissolved in a liquid drop evaporating on a superhydrophobic surface has recently emerged as a promising concentrator approach with various applications ranging from ultrasensitive bioidentification to DNA molecule sorting. Here, we demonstrate that surface textures with non-uniform wettability fabricated using direct easy-to-implement femtosecond-pulse filament-assisted ablation of polytetrafluoroethylene substrates can be used to concentrate and deposit an analyte at a designated location out of a water droplet. The proposed surface textures contain a central superhydrophilic trap surrounded by superhydrophobic periodically arranged pillars with a hierarchical roughness. By optimizing the arrangement and geometry of the central trap and the surrounding superhydrophobic textures, the analyte dissolved in a 5 μL water drop was fixed onto a 90 × 90 μm² target. The proposed textures provide a concentration factor of 10³, an order of magnitude higher than those for the previously reported surface textures. This promising ultrasensitive versatile platform allows the detection of fingerprints of the deposited analyte via surface-enhanced spectroscopy techniques (Raman scattering or photoluminescence) at an estimated detection threshold better than 10^-15 mol L^-1.

Anti-Reflectance Optimization of Secondary Nanostructured Black Silicon Grown on Micro-Structured Arrays

Owing to its extremely low light absorption, black silicon has been widely investigated and reported in recent years, and simultaneously applied to various disciplines. Black silicon is, in general, fabricated on flat surfaces based on the silicon substrate. However, with three normal fabrication methods-plasma dry etching, metal-assisted wet etching, and femtosecond laser pulse etching-black silicon cannot perform easily due to its lowest absorption and thus some studies remained in the laboratory stage. This paper puts forward a novel secondary nanostructured black silicon, which uses the dry-wet hybrid fabrication method to achieve secondary nanostructures. In consideration of the influence of the structure's size, this paper fabricated different sizes of secondary nanostructured black silicon and compared their absorptions with each other. A total of 0.5% reflectance and 98% absorption efficiency of the pit sample were achieved with a diameter of 117.1 μm and a depth of 72.6 μm. In addition, the variation tendency of the absorption efficiency is not solely monotone increasing or monotone decreasing, but firstly increasing and then decreasing. By using a statistical image processing method, nanostructures with diameters between 20 and 30 nm are the majority and nanostructures with a diameter between 10 and 40 nm account for 81% of the diameters.
