Band gap reduction in van der Waals layered 2D materials via a de-charge transfer mechanism

Easily deposited ZnO nanorods on siloxene nanosheets: investigation of morphological, dielectric, ferroelectric, and energy storage properties

The integration of metal oxides onto two-dimensional layered siloxene has proven to be an effective strategy for expanding potential applications across diverse fields. Herein, we present the synthesis and detailed characterization of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods deposited on siloxene nanosheets using the wet chemical precipitation method without the need of alkali. The presence of ZnO nanorods was confirmed through electron microscopy analyses. X-ray diffraction analysis further verified the presence of characteristic peaks of ZnO in the hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure. Dielectric measurements demonstrated the moderated stability of interfacial polarization in siloxene nanosheets doped with zinc oxide (SX-ZnO) over a broad frequency spectrum, coupled with minimal electrical loss values under 0.4 within the 100 Hz to 1 MHz frequency range. In addition, the ferroelectric study of SiNSs-ZnO composites revealed a slim hysteresis loop with maximum polarization and remnant polarization values that varied with reaction times. The SX-ZnO sample prepared for 5 h exhibited the best stored energy properties, featuring a moderate stored energy density (Ws = 771.94 mJ cm-3) and a high energy efficiency of 83.38%. This investigation underscores that the modification of siloxene layers through the deposition of nanostructured transition metal oxide materials leads to stabilized interfacial polarization and enhanced efficient energy storage.

Magneto-optical Kerr Effect in Ferroelectric Antiferromagnetic Two-Dimensional Heterostructures

We studied the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) of two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure CrI₃/In₂Se₃/CrI₃ using density functional theory calculations and symmetry analysis. The spontaneous polarization in the In₂Se₃ ferroelectric layer and the antiferromagnetic ordering in CrI₃ layers break the mirror and the time-reversal symmetry, thus activating MOKE. We show that the Kerr angle can be reversed by either the polarization or the antiferromagnetic order parameter. Our results suggest that ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic 2D heterostructures could be exploited for ultracompact information storage devices, where the information is encoded by the two ferroelectric or the two time-reversed antiferromagnetic states and the read-out is performed optically by MOKE.

A reversible and stable doping technique to invert the carrier polarity of MoTe2

Two-dimensional (2D) materials can be implemented in several functional devices for future optoelectronics and electronics applications. Remarkably, recent research on p-n diodes by stacking 2D materials in heterostructures or homostructures (out of plane) has been carried out extensively with novel designs that are impossible with conventional bulk semiconductor materials. However, the insight of a lateral p-n diode through a single nanoflake based on 2D material needs attention to facilitate the miniaturization of device architectures with efficient performance. Here, we have established a physical carrier-type inversion technique to invert the polarity of MoTe₂-based field-effect transistors (FETs) with deep ultraviolet (DUV) doping in (oxygen) O₂and (nitrogen) N₂gas environments. A p-type MoTe₂nanoflake transformed its polarity to n-type when irradiated under DUV illumination in an N₂gaseous atmosphere, and it returned to its original state once irradiated in an O₂gaseous environment. Further, Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) measurements were employed to support our findings, where the value of the work function changed from ∼4.8 and ∼4.5 eV when p-type MoTe₂inverted to the n-type, respectively. Also, using this approach, an in-plane homogeneous p-n junction was formed and achieved a diode rectifying ratio (I_f/I_r) up to ∼3.8 × 10⁴. This effective approach for carrier-type inversion may play an important role in the advancement of functional devices.

Realization of asymmetric spin splitting Dirac cones in antiferromagnetic graphene/CrAs2/graphene heterotrilayer

Nonmagnetic graphene-based van der Waals heterotrilayers exhibit peculiar electronic features such as energetically and/or spatially resolved Dirac rings/cones. Here, using first-principles calculations we study the effect of magnetic proximity effect and mirror symmetry of antiferromagnetic CrAs2monolayer sandwiched between graphene on the Dirac cones. We clearly identify the common vertical shift of the Dirac bands in the spin up channel. While in the spin down channel, we surprisingly observe the remarkable transverse splitting Dirac cones. The underling mechanism can be attributed to the static electric field caused by the charge transfer between the interlayers, and the polarized field arising from the weakly magnetized graphene. Both fields collectively give rise to an inequivalent space inversion broken between graphene and CrAs2layers. Such unique Dirac states are absent in its nonmagnetic or ferromagnetic counterpart, ferromagnetic heterotrilayer with the glide symmetry, and graphene/CrAs2heterobilayer. Our findings would provide a new insight into the correlation between Dirac cones and magnetic monolayer sandwiched between graphene.

Two-Dimensional Materials to Address the Lithium Battery Challenges

Despite the ever-growing demand in safe and high power/energy density of Li⁺ ion and Li metal rechargeable batteries (LIBs), materials-related challenges are responsible for the majority of performance degradation in such batteries. These challenges include electrochemically induced phase transformations, repeated volume expansion and stress concentrations at interfaces, poor electrical and mechanical properties, low ionic conductivity, dendritic growth of Li, oxygen release and transition metal dissolution of cathodes, polysulfide shuttling in Li-sulfur batteries, and poor reversibility of lithium peroxide/superoxide products in Li-O₂ batteries. Owing to compelling physicochemical and structural properties, in recent years two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising candidates to address the challenges in LIBs. This Review highlights the cutting-edge advances of LIBs by using 2D materials as cathodes, anodes, separators, catalysts, current collectors, and electrolytes. It is shown that 2D materials can protect the electrode materials from pulverization, improve the synergy of Li⁺ ion deposition, facilitate Li⁺ ion flux through electrolyte and electrode/electrolyte interfaces, enhance thermal stability, block the lithium polysulfide species, and facilitate the formation/decomposition of Li-O₂ discharge products. This work facilitates the design of safe Li batteries with high energy and power density by using 2D materials.

Temperature, strain and charge mediated multiple and dynamical phase changes of selenium and tellurium

Semiconducting selenium and tellurium in their 3D bulk trigonal structures consist of parallel and weakly interacting helical chains of atoms and display a number of peculiarities. We predict that thermal excitations, 2D compressive strain and excess charge of positive and negative polarity mediate metal-insulator transitions by transforming these semiconductors into different metallic crystal structures. When heated to high temperature, or compressed, or charged positively, they change into a simple cubic structure with metallic bands, which is very rare among elemental crystals. When charged negatively, they transform first into body-centered tetragonal and subsequently into the body-centered orthorhombic structures with increasing negative charging. These two new structures stabilized by excess electrons also have overlapping metallic bands and quasi 2D and 1D substructures of lower dimensionality. Since the external charging of crystals can be achieved through their surfaces, the effects of charging on 2D structures of selenium and tellurium are also investigated. Similar structural transformations have been mediated also in 2D nanosheets and free-standing monolayers of these elements. These phase changes assisted by phonons are dynamical, reversible and tunable; the resulting metal-insulator transitions can occur within very short time intervals and may offer important device applications.

Insights into the TiO2-Based Photocatalytic Systems and Their Mechanisms

Photocatalysis is a multifunctional phenomenon that can be employed for energy applications such as H2 production, CO2 reduction into fuels, and environmental applications such as pollutant degradations, antibacterial disinfection, etc. In this direction, it is not an exaggerated fact that TiO2 is blooming in the field of photocatalysis, which is largely explored for various photocatalytic applications. The deeper understanding of TiO2 photocatalysis has led to the design of new photocatalytic materials with multiple functionalities. Accordingly, this paper exclusively reviews the recent developments in the modification of TiO2 photocatalyst towards the understanding of its photocatalytic mechanisms. These modifications generally involve the physical and chemical changes in TiO2 such as anisotropic structuring and integration with other metal oxides, plasmonic materials, carbon-based materials, etc. Such modifications essentially lead to the changes in the energy structure of TiO2 that largely boosts up the photocatalytic process via enhancing the band structure alignments, visible light absorption, carrier separation, and transportation in the system. For instance, the ability to align the band structure in TiO2 makes it suitable for multiple photocatalytic processes such as degradation of various pollutants, H2 production, CO2 conversion, etc. For these reasons, TiO2 can be realized as a prototypical photocatalyst, which paves ways to develop new photocatalytic materials in the field. In this context, this review paper sheds light into the emerging trends in TiO2 in terms of its modifications towards multifunctional photocatalytic applications.

Introducing novel electronic and magnetic properties in C3N nanosheets by defect engineering and atom substitution

Using first-principles calculations the effects of topological defects, vacancies, Stone–Wales and anti-site and substitution of atoms, on the structure and electronic properties of monolayer C₃N are investigated.
