9,10-Azaboraphenanthrene-containing small molecules and conjugated polymers: synthesis and their application in chemodosimeters for the ratiometric detection of fluoride ions

Hybrid materials comprising ferrocene and diaminoborane moieties: linear concatenation versus macrocyclization

Combination of borane and diaminoferrocene monomers by Si/B exchange condensation reactions afforded either diazabora-[3]ferrocenophanes or, via stepwise processes, larger macrocycles and a series of linear oligomers. Additional incorporation of p-phenylene moieties in the backbone yielded alternating concatenation.

Synthesis of phenanthrylboroles and formal nitrene insertion to access azaborapyrenes

Extended conjugation has been introduced into boroles but only on the 2,3- or 4,5-positions of the central BC4 core. In this work we synthesize phenanthrylboroles that also have conjugation on the 3,4-positions and demonstrate their insertion reactivity with azides to furnish B,N-analogues of pyrene.

Mono- and Bis-Phosphine Promoted Incorporation of Boron, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus into Heterocycles via Staudinger Reactions of Borafluorene Azides

We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of BNP-incorporated borafluorenate heterocycles formed via thermolysis reactions of pyridylphosphine and bis(phosphine)-coordinated borafluorene azides. The use of diphenyl-2-pyridylphosphine (PyPh2P), trans-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene (Ph2P(H)C═C(H)PPh2), and bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (Ph2PC(H2)PPh2) as stabilizing ligands resulted in Staudinger reactions to form complex heterocycles with four- (BN2P, BNPC, P2N2) and five-membered (BNP2C and BN2PC) rings, which were successfully isolated and fully characterized by multinuclear NMR and X-ray crystallography. However, when bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (Ph2P-Ph-PPh2) was used as the ligand in a reaction with 9-bromo-9-borafluorene (BF-Br), due to the close proximity of the donor P atoms, the diphosphine-stabilized borafluoronium ion with an unusual borafluorene dibromide anion was formed. Reaction of the borafluoronium ion with trimethylsilyl azide left the cation intact, and the dibromide anion was substituted by a diazide. Density functional theory calculations were used to provide mechanistic insight into the formation of these new boracyclic compounds. This work highlights a new method in which donor phosphine ligands may be used to promote dimerization, cyclization, and ring contraction reactions to produce boracycles via Staudinger reactions.

Heteroatom-Promoted Polyhexagonal Saddle-Shaped Molecular Structures and their Supramolecular Coassembly with C60

Molecules with curved architecture can exhibit unique optoelectronic properties due to the concave-convex π-surface. However, synthesizing negatively curved saddle-shaped aromatic systems has been challenging due to the internal structural strain. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of two polyhexagonal molecular systems, 1 and 2, with saddle shape geometry by judiciously varying the aromatic moiety, avoiding the harsh synthetic methods as that of heptagonal aromatic saddle systems. The unique geometry preferences of B, N, and S furnish suitable curvature to the molecules, featuring saddle shape. The saddle geometry also enables them to interact with fullerene C60 , and the supramolecular interactions of fullerene C60 with 1 and 2 modify their optoelectronic properties. Crystal structure analysis reveals that 1, with a small π-surface, forms a double columnar array of fullerenes in the solid state. In contrast, 2 with a large π-surface produces a supramolecular capsule entrapping two discrete fullerenes. The intermolecular interactions between B, N, S, and the aryl-π surface of the host and C60 guest are the stabilizing factors for creating these supramolecular structures. Comprehensive computational, optical, and Raman spectroscopic studies establish the charge transfer interactions between B-N doped heterocycle host and fullerene C60 guest.

Highly Selective and Scalable Molecular Fluoride Sensor for Naked-Eye Detection

Fluoride is widely present in nature, and human exposure to it is generally regarded as inevitable. High levels of fluoride intake induce acute and chronic illnesses. To reduce potential harm to the general public, it is essential to create selective fluoride detectors capable of providing a colorimetric response for naked-eye detection without the need for sophisticated equipment. Here, we report a one-pot synthesis of four different diaminomaleonitrile-derived Schiff base sensors. The terephthalaldehyde adduct provided a strong color change visible to the naked eye at a F- concentration level as low as 2 ppm. From the evaluation against other anions, such as CN-, I-, Br-, Cl-, NO3-, PO43-, OAc-, and HSO4-, the molecular sensor displayed a visible color change exclusively upon exposure to fluoride, underscoring exceptional selectivity. As a key intermediate for understanding the mechanism, HF2- was confirmed by 19F nuclear magnetic resonance. Theoretical calculations suggested a deprotonation-triggered bathochromic shift brought about by the unique electronic structure of the sensor. Furthermore, the simple synthetic protocol from economically accessible materials allowed for the preparation of the compound on a large scale, rendering it a highly practical visual fluoride sensor.

A Combination of B- and N-Doped π-Systems Enabling Systematic Tuning of Electronic Structures and Properties

Doping heteroatoms into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may alter their structures and thereby physical properties. This study reports the construction of B/N-codoped PAHs via combining the B- and N-doped π-systems. Two π-extended B/N-codoped PAHs were synthesized through the Mallory photoreaction. Both feature a C48 BN2 π-skeleton, which is assembled by linearly fusing three substructures including B-doped and sp2 -hybridized N-doped π-moieties and one pyrene unit. In comparison to the pristine B-doped analog, their intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) states are distinctly modulated by the fused N-doped π-system and the further incorporated cyano group, leading to their tunable optical properties, as revealed by detailed theoretical and experimental analysis. Furthermore, these three molecules have sufficient Lewis acidity and can coordinate with Lewis base to form Lewis acid-base adducts, and notably, such intermolecular complexation can further dynamically modulate their ICT transitions and thereby photophysical properties, such as producing blue, green and red fluorescence.

Poly(ferrocenylene iminoborane): an inorganic-organic hybrid polymer comprising a backbone of moderately interacting ferrocenes

The first poly(ferrocenylene iminoborane), that is, a polyferrocene-based metallopolymer featuring CC-isoelectronic/-isosteric BN linking units, and a series of monodisperse ferrocenylene iminoborane oligomers are presented. Our studies provide important insight into the structural and electronic nature of this novel class of hybrid materials.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Carbazole-Functionalized Diazaphosphepines via Sequent P-N Chemistry

Chemical structure tunability of organic π-conjugated molecules (OCMs) is highly appealing for fine-tuning the optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report a new series of carbazole-functionalized diazaphosphepines (DPP-CBZs) via one-pot phosphorus-nitrogen (P-N) chemistry. The one-pot synthesis harnessed the mild and selective P-N chemistry that successively installed carbazole moieties and seven-membered heterocycles at one P-center. Single-crystal structure studies revealed the tweezer-like structures for 1PO, 2PO, and 3PO that maintained the intramolecular donor-acceptor interactions between [d]-aryl moieties and carbazole. DPP-CBZs exhibited a more twisted central-diazaphosphepine ring compared with the reference molecules (1-3MO without carbazole group). DPP-CBZs with strong electron-accepting [d]-Ars generally showed lower photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) than those of the reference molecules, which is probably due to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from electron-donating carbazole to electron-withdrawing [d]-Ars. Upon the oxidation of the P-centers, PLQYs of DPP-CBZs increased. Furthermore, photophysical studies and theoretical studies suggested that the carbazole group had a strong impact on the structures of DPP-CBZs. As a proof of concept, we showed that grinding the mixture of 1PO as the electron-donating tweezer and benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarbonitrile (BzCN) as the electron acceptor induced the formation of the CT complex.

Photochemically and Thermally Generated BN-Doped Borafluorenate Heterocycles via Intramolecular Staudinger-Type Reactions

A series of BN-incorporated borafluorenate heterocycles, bis(borafluorene-phosphinimine)s (11-15), have been formed via intramolecular Staudinger-type reactions. The reactions were promoted by light or heat using monodentate phosphine-stabilized 9-azido-9-borafluorenes (R3P-BF-N3; 6-10) and involve the release of dinitrogen (N2), migration of phosphine from boron to nitrogen, and oxidation of the phosphorus center (PIII to PV). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide mechanistic insight into the formation of these compounds. Compounds 11-15 are blue emissive in the solution and solid states with absolute quantum yields (ΦF) ranging from 12 to 68%.

Poly(thiophene iminoborane): A Poly(thiophene vinylene) (PTV) Analogue with a Fully BN-Doped Backbone

An unprecedented poly(thiophene iminoborane)-a boron-nitrogen analogue of the well-established conjugated organic polymer poly(thiophene vinylene)-is presented. The polymer synthesis is achieved by selective Si/B exchange polycondensation of a 2,5-diborylthiophene with a 2,5-diaminothiophene derivative. For the latter, a facile synthetic strategy is devised, which makes this versatile, strongly electron-releasing building block easily accessible. The novel polymer and a series of monodisperse thiophene iminoborane oligomers reveal systematic bathochromic shifts in their absorption with increasing chain length, and thus extended π-conjugation over the BN units along the backbone, which is further supported by TD-DFT calculations.

Poly(arylene iminoborane)s, Analogues of Poly(arylene vinylene) with a BN-Doped Backbone: A Comprehensive Study

Despite the great success of the concept of doping organic compounds with BN units to access new materials with tailored properties, its use in polymer chemistry has only been realized quite recently. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of oligo- and poly(arylene iminoborane)s comprising a backbone of phenylene or thiophene moieties, as well as combinations thereof, linked via B=N units. The novel polymers can be regarded as BN analogues of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) or poly(thiophene vinylene) (PTV) or their copolymers. Our modular synthetic approach allowed us to prepare four polymers and 12 monodisperse oligomers with modulated electronic properties. Alternating electron-releasing diaminoarylene and electron-accepting diborylarylene building blocks gave rise to a pronounced donor-acceptor character. Effective π-conjugation over the arylene iminoborane backbone is evidenced by systematic bathochromic shifts of the low-energy UV-vis absorption maximum with increasing chain length, which is furthermore supported by crystallographic and computational investigations. Furthermore, all compounds investigated show emission of visible light in the solid state and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior, due to the presence of partially flexible linear B=N linkages in the backbone.

The Effect of Carborane Substituents on the Lewis Acidity of Boranes

The Lewis acidity of primary, secondary, and tertiary boranes with phenyl, pentafluorophenyl, and all three isomers of the C-substituted icosahedral carboranes (ortho, meta, and para) was investigated by computing their fluoride, hydride, and ammonia affinities as well as their global electrophilicity indices and LUMO energies. From these calculations, it was determined that the substituent effects on the Lewis acidity of these boranes follow the trend of ortho-carborane > meta-carborane > para-carborane > C6F5 > C6H5.

Reactions of main group compounds with azides forming organic nitrogen-containing species

Since the seminal discovery of phenyl azide by Grieß in 1864, a variety of organic azides (R-N3) have been developed and extensively studied. The amenability of azides to a number of reactions has expanded their utility as building blocks not only in organic synthesis but also in bioorthogonal chemistry and materials science. Over the decades, it has been demonstrated that the reactions of main group compounds with azides lead to diverse N-containing main group molecules. In view of the pronounced progress in this area, this review summarizes the reactions of main group compounds with azides, emphatically introducing their reaction patterns and mechanisms. The reactions of forming inorganic nitrogen species are not included in this review.

Synthesis and Characterizations of Polythiophene Networks with Nonplanar BN Lewis Pair Building Blocks

Doping the boron (B) element endowed organic π-conjugated polymers (OCPs) with intriguing optoelectronic properties. Herein, we introduce a new series of thienylborane-pyridine (BN) Lewis pairs via the facile reactions between thienylborane and various pyridine derivatives. Particularly, we developed a "one-pot" synthetic protocol to access BN2 with an unstable 4-bromopyridine moiety. Polycondensations between the BN Lewis pairs and distannylated thiophene afforded a new series of BN-cross-linked polythiophenes (BN-PTs). Experiments revealed that BN-PTs exhibited highly uniform chemical structures, particularly the uniform chemical environment of B-centers. BN-PTs showed good stability in the solid state. PBN2 even maintained the uniform B-center under high temperature or moisture conditions. The studies further suggested that the presence of topological BN structures endowed the polymers with strong intramolecular charge separation character. As a proof of concept, a representative BN-PT was tested as the catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Linear and macrocyclic oligo(p-phenylene iminoboranes) with ferrocenyl side groups - observation of selective, non-templated macrocyclization

A series of linear oligo(p-phenylene iminoboranes), which are BN-modified congeners of oligo(p-phenylene vinylenes), featuring pendent ferrocene groups have been prepared. Stoichiometric reaction of a bis-silylamine with a bisborane led to selective formation of an unprecedented macrocycle, without the use of a template.

A pillar[5]arene-based planar chiral charge-transfer dye with enhanced circularly polarized luminescence and multiple responsive chiroptical changes

The fabrication of circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) organic dyes based on macrocyclic architecture has become an importantly studied topic in recent years because it is of great importance to both chiral science and supramolecular chemistry, where pillar[n]arenes are emerging as a promising class of planar chiral macrocyclic hosts for CPL. We herein synthesized an unusual planar chiral charge-transfer dye (P5BB) by covalent coupling of triarylborane (Ar3B) as an electron acceptor to parent pillar[5]arene as an electron donor. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) nature of P5BB not only caused a thermally responsive emission but also boosted the luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum). Interestingly, the specific binding of fluoride ions changed the photophysical properties of P5BB, including absorption, fluorescence, circular dichroism (CD), and CPL, which could be exploited as an optical probe for multi-channel detection of fluoride ions. Furthermore, the chiroptical changes were observed upon addition of 1,4-dibromobutane as an achiral guest.

Probing borafluorene B-C bond insertion with gold acetylide and azide

The reaction of Ph₃PAuN₃ with 9-Ph-9-borafluorene resulted in complexation of the azide to boron while a gold acetylide reacted with 9-Ph-9-borafluorene to insert the acetylide carbon to access a six-membered boracycle with an exocyclic double bond.

One-Pot Synthesis of Stimuli-Responsive Fluorescent Polymers through Polymerization-Induced Emission

Stimuli-responsive opposite emission (A)/absorption (B) polymer material (A∪B = Ω and A∩B = Ø) represents a novel polymer material that is difficult to prepare. Here, we demonstrate a one-pot strategy for the molecular design of stimuli-responsive opposite emission/absorption polymer material with intriguing properties of opposite emission/absorption and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) type nontraditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL) in the visible region, through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization-induced emission (PIE) of the N,N-dimethyl-triphenylmethanol moiety. Investigations reveal that NTIL is due to the through-space conjugation effect caused by polymer chain entanglement, when increasing the repeating unit number. The corresponding stimuli-responsive opposite emission/absorption properties are derived from the carbocation-quinoid mechanism, which enables the fluorescence encryption capability. This work therefore demonstrates the proof of concept of a novel opposite emission/absorption polymer material that might cause inspiration in different fields.

Dynamic B/N Lewis Pairs: Insights into the Structural Variations and Photochromism via Light-Induced Fluorescence to Phosphorescence Switching

Ultralong afterglow emissions due to room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are of paramount importance in the advancement of smart sensors, bioimaging and light-emitting devices. We herein present an efficient approach to achieve rarely accessible phosphorescence of heavy atom-free organoboranes via photochemical switching of sterically tunable fluorescent Lewis pairs (LPs). LPs are widely applied in and well-known for their outstanding performance in catalysis and supramolecular soft materials but have not thus far been exploited to develop photo-responsive RTP materials. The intramolecular LP M1BNM not only shows a dynamic response to thermal treatment due to reversible N→B coordination but crystals of M1BNM also undergo rapid photochromic switching. As a result, unusual emission switching from short-lived fluorescence to long-lived phosphorescence (rad-M1BNM, τ_RTP =232 ms) is observed. The reported discoveries in the field of Lewis pairs chemistry offer important insights into their structural dynamics, while also pointing to new opportunities for photoactive materials with implications for fast responsive detectors.

Backbone-controlled LUMO energy induces intramolecular C-H activation in ortho-bis-9-borafluorene-substituted phenyl and o-carboranyl compounds leading to novel 9,10-diboraanthracene derivatives

The choice of backbone linker for two ortho-bis-(9-borafluorene)s has a great influence on the LUMO located at the boron centers and, therefore, the reactivity of the respective compounds. Herein, we report the room temperature rearrangement of 1,2-bis-(9-borafluorenyl)-ortho-carborane, C2B10H10-1,2-[B(C12H8)]2 ([2a]) featuring o-carborane as the inorganic three-dimensional backbone and the synthesis of 1,2-bis-(9-borafluorenyl)benzene, C6H4-1,2-[B(C12H8)]2 (2b), its phenylene analog. DFT calculations on the transition state for the rearrangement support an intramolecular C-H bond activation process via an SEAr-like mechanism in [2a], and predicted that the same rearrangement would take place in 2b, but at elevated temperatures, which indeed proved to be the case. The rearrangement gives access to 3a and 3b as dibora-benzo[a]fluoroanthene isomers, a form of diboron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that had yet to be explored. The isolated compounds 2b, 3a, and 3b were fully characterized by NMR, HRMS, cyclic voltammetry (CV), single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and photophysical measurements, supported by DFT and TD-DFT calculations.

Fusion of Aza- and Oxadiborepins with Furans in a Reversible Ring-Opening Process Furnishes Versatile Building Blocks for Extended π-Conjugated Materials

A modular synthesis of both difurooxa- and difuroazadiborepins from a common precursor is demonstrated. Starting from 2,2'-bifuran, after protection of the positions 5 and 5' with bulky silyl groups, formation of the novel polycycles proceeds through opening of the furan rings to a dialkyne and subsequent re-cyclization in the borylation step. The resulting bifuran-fused diborepins show pronounced stability, highly planar tricyclic structures, and intense blue light emission. Deprotection and transformation into dibrominated building blocks that can be incorporated into π-extended materials can be performed in one step. Detailed DFT calculations provide information about the aromaticity of the constituent rings of this polycycle.

Two-in-One Approach toward White-Light Emissions of Dimeric B/N Lewis Pairs by Tuning the Ortho-Substitution Effect

A new family of dimeric B/N Lewis pairs with sterically tunable substitutions has been accomplished using the Two-in-One design strategy. Their structures are characteristic of doubly B/N-containing cores, and the electronic interactions between B and N centers can be modulated by the steric effects of ortho-substitutions from methyl groups. Interestingly, unique white-light emissions were achieved for 2M'2BNM and 1M2BNM, ascribed to the integration of two triarylborane species (B_sp²- and B_sp³-hybridization) into one single molecule.

Accessing Boron-Doped Pentaphene Analogues from 12-Boradibenzofluorene

Borole-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have garnered attention in recent years due to their attractive photophysical properties and potential utility in electronic devices. In this work, a borole-doped PAH, 12-boradibenzofluorene, is synthesized and formal intermolecular nitrene and oxygen atom insertion reactions were employed to access 1,2-azaborine- and 1,2-oxaborine-containing analogues of the carbonaceous PAH pentaphene. Iodosobenzene is established as a versatile reagent for oxygen atom insertion reactions into a variety of borole species to access 1,2-oxaborine systems.

Novel NBN-Embedded Polymers and Their Application as Fluorescent Probes in Fe3+ and Cr3+ Detection

The isosteric replacement of C═C by B–N units in conjugated organic systems has recently attracted tremendous interest due to its desirable optical, electronic and sensory properties. Compared with BN-, NBN- and BNB-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, NBN-embedded polymers are poised to expand the diversity and functionality of olefin polymers, but this new class of materials remain underexplored. Herein, a series of polymers with BNB-doped π-system as a pendant group were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization from NBN-containing vinyl monomers, which was prepared via intermolecular dehydration reaction between boronic acid and diamine moieties in one pot. Poly{2-(4-Vinylphenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-naphtho[1,8-de][1,3,2]diazaborinine} (P1), poly{N-(4-(1H-naphtho[1,8-de][1,3,2]diazaborinin-2(3H)-yl)phenyl)acrylamide} (P2) and poly{N-(4-(1H-benzo[d][1,3,2]diazaborol-2(3H)-yl)phenyl)acrylamide} (P3) were successfully synthesized. Their structure, photophysical properties and application in metal ion detection were investigated. Three polymers exhibit obvious solvatochromic fluorescence. As fluorescent sensors for the detection of Fe³⁺ and Cr³⁺, P1 and P2 show excellent selectivity and sensitivity. The limit of detection (LOD) achieved by Fe³⁺ is 7.30 nM, and the LOD achieved by Cr³⁺ is 14.69 nM, which indicates the great potential of these NBN-embedded polymers as metal fluorescence sensors.

Diboramacrocycles: reversible borole dimerisation-dissociation systems

We report that the outcome of the tin-boron exchange reaction of a mixed thiophene-benzo-fused stannole with aryldibromoboranes is associated with the steric bulk of the aryl substituent of the borane reagent, leading to either boroles or large diboracycles as products. NMR spectroscopic studies indicate that the two products can reversibly interconvert in solution, and mechanistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal boroles to be intermediates in the formation of the diboracyclic products. The addition of Lewis bases to the diboracycles leads to the corresponding borole adducts, demonstrating that they react as "masked" boroles. Additionally, the reaction of the title compounds with a series of organic azides affords complex heteropropellanes, formally 2 : 1 borole-azide adducts, that deviate from the usual BN aromatic compounds formed via nitrogen atom insertion into the boroles.

Enhanced N-directed electrophilic C-H borylation generates BN-[5]- and [6]helicenes with improved photophysical properties

Helicenes are chiral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of significant interest, e.g. in supramolecular chemistry, materials science and asymmetric catalysis. Herein an enhanced N-directed electrophilic C-H borylation methodology has been developed that provides access to azaborine containing helicenes (BN-helicenes). This borylation process proceeds via protonation of an aminoborane with bistriflimidic acid. DFT calculations reveal the borenium cation formed by protonation to be more electrophilic than the product derived from aminoborane activation with BBr3. The synthesised helicenes include BN-analogues of archetypal all carbon [5]- and [6]helicenes. The replacement of a CC with a BN unit (that has a longer bond) on the outer helix increases the strain in the BN congeners and the racemization half-life for a BN-[5]helicene relative to the all carbon [5]helicene. BN incorporation also increases the fluorescence efficiency of the helicenes, a direct effect of BN incorporation altering the distribution of the key frontier orbitals across the helical backbone relative to carbo-helicenes.

Unpredicted Concentration-Dependent Sensory Properties of Pyrene-Containing NBN-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Pyrene molecules containing NBN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been synthesized by a simple and efficient intermolecular dehydration reaction between 1-pyrenylboronic acid and aromatic diamine. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) with a five-membered NBN ring and pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) with a six-membered NBN ring show differing luminescence. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) shows concentration-dependent luminescence and enhanced emission after grinding at solid state. Pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) exhibits a turn-on type luminescence upon fluoride ion addition at lower concentration, as well as concentration-dependent stability. Further potential applications of Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) on artificial light-harvesting film were demonstrated by using commercial NiR dye as acceptor.

Alkene insertion reactivity of a o-carboranyl-substituted 9-borafluorene

The synthesis of 9-borafluorene with an electron-withdrawing o-carboranyl substituent and its reactions with a series of alkenes are described. The o-carboranyl substituent is bonded via one of the cluster carbon atoms to the boron atom of the 9-borafluorene moiety. In all cases, the reactions afford partly saturated analogs of borepins (i.e. 6,7-dihydroborepins) by unprecedented alkene insertion into the endocyclic B–C bond of the borole ring. Comparative studies with 9-bromo-9-borafluorene illustrate the superior insertion reactivity of the carboranyl-substituted derivative. A suite of experimental and computational techniques disclose the unique properties of the 9-borafluorene and provide insight into how the 9-carboranyl substituent affects its chemical reactivity.

A 9-carboranyl-substituted 9-borafluorene is reported, which is capable of undergoing efficient ring expansion to 6,7-dihydroborepins by a previously unknown alkene insertion.

1,10a-Dihydro-1-aza-10a-boraphenanthrene and 6a,7-Dihydro-7-aza-6a-boratetraphene: Two New Fluorescent BN-PAHs

Previously unknown 1,10a-dihydro-1-aza-10a-boraphenanthrene and 6a,7-dihydro-7-aza-6a-boratetraphene have been efficiently synthesized. Bromination of these BN-PAHs proceeds with complete regioselectivity, resulting in the formation of different substituted derivatives via cross-coupling reactions. These compounds exhibit rather high fluorescence quantum yields (up to ϕ_F = 0.80).

Substituent Modulation for Highly Bright 9-Borafluorene Derivatives with Carbazole Pendant

A series of 3,6-di-tert-butyl carbazole-functionalized 9-borafluorene derivatives have been prepared with outstandingly strong photoluminescence with quantum yields up to ca. 100 and 94% for Mes*BF-pCz in solution and film, respectively. 1,3,5-Tris(trifluoromethyl)benzene (^FMes)-substituted compounds exhibit enhanced Lewis acidity with coordination to weak nucleophiles like tetrahydrofuran, resulting in a long afterglow at low temperature. The large two-photon absorption cross-section of ca. 1103 GM for Mes*BF-pCz at 800 nm in CH₂Cl₂ indicated its potential application in bioimaging.

Pillar[5]arene-Based Dual Chiral Organoboranes with Allowed Host-Guest Chemistry and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

We first describe two examples of highly luminescent organoboranes (NP5BN1 and NP5BN2) with dual chirality that were achieved by molecular functionalization of planar chiral pillar[5]arenes with naphthyls. Sufficiently strong steric effects are imposed by triarylamine (Ar₃N) and triarylborane (Ar₃B) moieties and further enhanced by the proximity of the chiral building blocks, leading to the isolation of multiple enantiomers via chiral high-performance liquid chromatography. The intramolecular charge transfer from N-donor to B-acceptor across both chiral subunits enabled the circularly polarized luminescence and thermally robust colorimetric responses in their emissions. Furthermore, their remarkable host-guest chemistry was allowed at no expense in the pursuit of advanced chiroptical properties using pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular scaffolds.

Blue/yellow emissive carbon dots coupled with curcumin: a hybrid sensor toward fluorescence turn-on detection of fluoride ion

Trace detection of fluoride ion has gained increasing attention due to fluoride's close association with biological and environmental processes. Herein, we construct a novel hybrid nanosystem consisting of carbon dots and curcumin for sensitive and selective sensing of F^-. Carbon dots are synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of 2,3-diaminopyridine and selenourea in hydrochloric acid. This material is employed as the fluorescent indicator that exhibits intense blue and yellow emission with quantum yields of 12% and 33%, respectively. Curcumin, possessing an absorption peak at 532 nm, can significantly quench the yellow fluorescence of carbon dots through inner filter effect. Curcumin is also used to specifically recognize F^-. When F^- is added, the curcumin-F^- complex generates, which leads to the hypochromatic shift of the absorption band from 532 to 430 nm. In such a case, the inner filter effect reduces, and yellow fluorescence of carbon dots recovers. Thus, a fluorescence turn-on sensor of F^- is built based on the carbon dots/curcumin system. The limits of detection and quantitation are measured to be 0.39 and 1.30 μM, respectively. For real usage, the proposed method is applied to determinate F^- in tap water and milk samples with relative standard deviations below 7.9%.

Dithiophene-Fused Oxadiborepins and Azadiborepins: A New Class of Highly Fluorescent Heteroaromatics

Access to dithiophene-fused oxadiborepins and the first azadiborepins attained via a modular synthesis route are presented. The new compounds emit intense blue light, some of which demonstrate fluorescence quantum yields close to unity. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) revealed electrochemically reversible one-electron reduction processes. The weak aromatic character of the novel 1,2,7-azadiborepin ring is demonstrated with in-depth theoretical investigations using nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) scans and anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) calculations.

Highly Emissive 9-Borafluorene Derivatives: Synthesis, Photophysical Properties and Device Fabrication

A series of 9-borafluorene derivatives, functionalised with electron-donating groups, have been prepared. Some of these 9-borafluorene compounds exhibit strong yellowish emission in solution and in the solid state with relatively high quantum yields (up to 73.6 % for FMesB-Cz as a neat film). The results suggest that the highly twisted donor groups suppress charge transfer, but the intrinsic photophysical properties of the 9-borafluorene systems remain. The new compounds showed enhanced stability towards the atmosphere, and exhibited excellent thermal stability, revealing their potential for application in materials science. Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices were fabricated with two of the highly emissive compounds, and they exhibited strong yellow-greenish electroluminescence, with a maximum luminance intensity of >22 000 cd m-2 . These are the first two examples of 9-borafluorene derivatives being used as light-emitting materials in OLED devices, and they have enabled us to achieve a balance between maintaining their intrinsic properties while improving their stability.

One tool to bring them all: Au-catalyzed synthesis of B,O- and B,N-doped PAHs from boronic and borinic acids

The isoelectronic replacement of C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bonds with ⁻BN⁺ bonds in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a widely used tool to prepare novel optoelectronic materials. Far less well explored are corresponding B,O-doped PAHs, although they have a similarly high application potential. We herein report on the modular synthesis of B,N- and B,O-doped PAHs through the [Au(PPh₃)NTf₂]-catalyzed 6-endo-dig cyclization of BN–H and BO–H bonds across suitably positioned C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bonds in the key step. Readily available, easy-to-handle o-alkynylaryl boronic and borinic acids serve as starting materials, which are either cyclized directly or first converted into the corresponding aminoboranes and then cyclized. The reaction even tolerates bulky mesityl substituents on boron, which later kinetically protect the formed B,N/O-PAHs from hydrolysis or oxidation. Our approach is also applicable for the synthesis of rare doubly B,N/O-doped PAHs. Specifically, we prepared 1,2-B,E-naphthalenes and -anthracenes, 1,5-B₂-2,6-E₂-anthracenes (E = N, O) as well as B,O₂-containing and unprecedented B,N,O-containing phenalenyls. Selected examples of these compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography; their optoelectronic properties have been studied by cyclic voltammetry, electron spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. Using a new unsubstituted (B,O)₂-perylene as the substrate for late-stage functionalization, we finally show that the introduction of two pinacolatoboryl (Bpin) substituents is possible in high yield and with perfect regioselectivity via an Ir-catalyzed C–H borylation approach.

Singly and doubly B,E-doped PAHs were synthesized using a protocol that starts from easy-to-handle boronic and borinic acids and offers the possibility to choose between the preparation of B,O- and B,N-PAHs in the final reaction step.

Recent developments in stimuli-responsive luminescent polymers composed of boron compounds

This review summarizes recent developments in stimuli-responsive luminescent polymers with boron chromophores, including three- and four-coordinated compounds. Sensing mechanisms based on the features of boron and polymer structures are described.

Synthesis, structure and properties of semi-internally BN-substituted annulated thiophenes

A series of semi-internally BN-substituted annulated thiophenes were synthesized from easily accessible 2,1-borazaronaphthalenes.

(Hetero)arene-fused boroles: a broad spectrum of applications

(Hetero)arene-fused boroles are a class of compounds containing a 5-membered boron diene-ring. Based on their molecular framework, the (hetero)arene-fused boroles can be considered as boron-doped polycyclic antiaromatic hydrocarbons and are thus of great interest. Due to the vacant p_z orbital on the 3-coordinate boron atom, the antiaromaticity and strain of the 5-membered borole ring, (hetero)arene-fused boroles possess strong electron accepting abilities and Lewis acidity. By functionalization, they can be tuned to optimize different properties for specific applications. Herein, we summarize synthetic methodologies, different strategies for their functionalization, and applications of (hetero)arene-fused boroles.

(Hetero)arene-fused boroles, ‘antiaromatic’ 2n-electron π-systems, more stable and more functionalizable than boroles, offer greater potential for a variety of applications.
