From Molecular Electronics to Molecular Intelligence

Molecular electronics is a field that explores the ultimate limits of electronic device dimensions by using individual molecules as operable electronic devices. Over the past five decades since the proposal of a molecular rectifier by Aviram and Ratner in 1974 ( Chem. Phys. Lett.1974,29, 277-283), researchers have developed various fabrication and characterization techniques to explore the electrical properties of molecules. With the push of electrical characterizations and data analysis methodologies, the reproducibility issues of the single-molecule conductance measurement have been chiefly resolved, and the origins of conductance variation among different devices have been investigated. Numerous prototypical molecular electronic devices with external physical and chemical stimuli have been demonstrated based on the advances of instrumental and methodological developments. These devices enable functions such as switching, logic computing, and synaptic-like computing. However, as the goal of molecular electronics, how can molecular-based intelligence be achieved through single-molecule electronic devices? At the fiftieth anniversary of molecular electronics, we try to answer this question by summarizing recent progress and providing an outlook on single-molecule electronics. First, we review the fabrication methodologies for molecular junctions, which provide the foundation of molecular electronics. Second, the preliminary efforts of molecular logic devices toward integration circuits are discussed for future potential intelligent applications. Third, some molecular devices with sensing applications through physical and chemical stimuli are introduced, demonstrating phenomena at a single-molecule scale beyond conventional macroscopic devices. From this perspective, we summarize the current challenges and outlook prospects by describing the concepts of "AI for single-molecule electronics" and "single-molecule electronics for AI".

Massive acceleration of SN2 reaction using the oriented external electric field

Nucleophilic substitution is one of the most fundamental chemical reactions, and the pursuit of high reaction rates of the reaction is one of the ultimate goals in catalytic and organic chemistry. The reaction barrier of the nucleophilic substitution originates from the highly polar nature of the transition state that can be stabilized under the electric field created by the solvent environment. However, the intensity of the induced solvent-electric field is relatively small due to the random orientation of solvent molecules, which hinders the catalytic effects and restricts the reaction rates. This work shows that oriented external electric fields applied within a confined nanogap between two nanoscopic tips could accelerate the Menshutkin reaction by more than four orders of magnitude (over 39 000 times). The theoretical calculations reveal that the electric field inside the nanogap reduces the energy barrier to increase the reaction rate. Our work suggests the great potential of electrostatic catalysis for green synthesis in the future.

Evidence of an Off-Resonant Electronic Transport Mechanism in Helicenes

Helical molecules have been proposed as candidates for producing spin-polarized currents, even at room conditions, due to their chiral asymmetry. However, describing their transport mechanism in single molecular junctions is not straightforward. In this work, we show the synthesis of two novel kinds of dithia[11]helicenes to study their electronic transport in break junctions among a series of three helical molecules: dithia[n]helicenes, with n = 7, 9, and 11 molecular units. Our experimental measurements and clustering-based analysis demonstrate low conductance values that remain similar across different applied voltages and molecules. Additionally, we assess the length dependence of the conductance for each helicene, revealing an exponential decay characteristic of off-resonant transport. This behavior is primarily attributed to the misalignment between the energy levels of the molecule-electrodes system. The length dependence trend described above is supported by ab initio calculations, further confirming an off-resonant transport mechanism.

Unveiling the Properties of Sulfhydryl Groups in a Single-Molecule Junction

The metal-thiol interface is ubiquitous in nanotechnology and surface chemistry. It is not only used to construct nanocomposites but also plays a decisive role in the properties of these materials. When organothiol molecules bind to the gold surface, there is still controversy over whether sulfhydryl groups can form disulfide bonds and whether these disulfide bonds can remain stable on the gold surface. Here, we investigate the intrinsic properties of sulfhydryl groups on the gold surface at the single-molecule level using a scanning tunneling microscope break junction technique. Our findings indicate that sulfhydryl groups can react with each other to form disulfide bonds on the gold surface, and the electric field can promote the sulfhydryl coupling reaction. In addition to these findings, ultraviolet irradiation is used to effectively regulate the coupling between sulfhydryl groups, leading to the formation and cleavage of disulfide bonds. These results unveil the intrinsic properties of sulfhydryl groups on the gold surface, therefore facilitating the accurate construction of broad nanocomposites with the desired functionalities.

Evolution of Single-Molecule Electronic Interfaces

Single-molecule electronics can fabricate single-molecule devices via the construction of molecule-electrode interfaces and also provide a unique tool to investigate single-molecule scale physicochemical processes at these interfaces. To investigate single-molecule electronic devices with desired functionalities, an understanding of the interface evolution processes in single-molecule devices is essential. In this review, we focus on the evolution of molecule-electrode interface properties, including the background of interface evolution in single-molecule electronics, the construction of different types of single-molecule interfaces, and the regulation methods. Finally, we discuss the perspective of future characterization techniques and applications for single-molecule electronic interfaces.

Solvent-Mediated Modulation of the Au-S Bond in Dithiol Molecular Junctions

Gold-dithiol molecular junctions have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. However, the nature of the gold-thiolate bond as it relates to the solvent has seldom been investigated. It is known that solvents can impact the electronic structure of single-molecule junctions, but the correlation between the solvent and dithiol-linked single-molecule junction conductance is not well understood. We study molecular junctions formed with thiol-terminated phenylenes from both 1-chloronaphthalene and 1-bromonaphthalene solutions. We find that the most probable conductance and the distribution of conductances are both affected by the solvent. First-principles calculations show that junction conductance depends on the binding configurations (adatom, atop, and bridge) of the thiolate on the Au surface, as has been shown previously. More importantly, we find that brominated solvents can restrict the binding of thiols to specific Au sites. This mechanism offers new insight into the effects of the solvent environment on covalent bonding in molecular junctions.

Deciphering the Potential of Multidimensional Carbon Materials for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy through Density Functional Theory

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a potent analytical tool, particularly for molecular identification and structural analysis. Conventional metallic SERS substrates, however, suffer from low reproducibility and compatibility with biological molecules. Recently, metal-free SERS substrates based on chemical enhancement have emerged as a promising alternative with carbon-based materials offering excellent reproducibility and compatibility. Nevertheless, our understanding of carbon materials in SERS remains limited, which hinders their rational design. Here we systematically explore multidimensional carbon materials, including zero-dimensional fullerenes (C60), one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, two-dimensional graphene, and their B-, N-, and O-doped derivatives, for SERS applications. Using density functional theory, we elucidate the nonresonant polarizability-enhanced and resonant charge-transfer-based chemical enhancement mechanisms of these materials by evaluating their static/dynamic polarizability and electron excitation properties. This work provides a critical reference for the future design of carbon-based SERS substrates, opening a new avenue in this field.

Supramolecular Radical Electronics

Supramolecular radical chemistry is an emerging area bridging supramolecular chemistry and radical chemistry, and the integration of radicals into the supramolecular architecture offers a new dimension for tuning their structures and functions. Although various efforts have been devoted to the fabrication of supramolecular junctions, the charge transport characterization through the supramolecular radicals remained unexplored due to the challenges in creating supramolecular radicals at the single-molecule level. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication and charge transport investigation of a supramolecular radical junction using the electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope-based break junction (EC-STM-BJ) technique. We found that the conductance of a supramolecular radical junction was more than 1 order of magnitude higher than that of a supramolecular junction without a radical and even higher than that of a fully conjugated oligophenylenediamine molecule with a similar length. The combined experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the radical increased the binding energy and decreased the energy gap in the supramolecular radical junction, which leads to the near-resonant transport through the supramolecular radical. Our work demonstrated that the supramolecular radical can provide not only strong binding but also efficient electrical coupling between building blocks, which provides new insights into supramolecular radical chemistry and new materials with supramolecular radicals.

Intermolecular and Electrode-Molecule Bonding in a Single Dimer Junction of Naphthalenethiol as Revealed by Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Combined with Transport Measurements

Electron transport through noncovalent interaction is of fundamental and practical importance in nanomaterials and nanodevices. Recent single-molecule studies employing single-molecule junctions have revealed unique electron transport properties through noncovalent interactions, especially those through a π-π interaction. However, the relationship between the junction structure and electron transport remains elusive due to the insufficient knowledge of geometric structures. In this article, we employ surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) synchronized with current-voltage (I-V) measurements to characterize the junction structure, together with the transport properties, of a single dimer and monomer junction of naphthalenethiol, the former of which was formed by the intermolecular π-π interaction. The correlation analysis of the vibrational energy and electrical conductance enables identifying the intermolecular and molecule-electrode interactions in these molecular junctions and, consequently, addressing the transport properties exclusively associated with the π-π interaction. In addition, the analysis achieved discrimination of the interaction between the NT molecule and the Au electrode of the junction, i.e., Au-π interactions through-π coupling and though-space coupling. The power density spectra support the noncovalent character at the interfaces in the molecular junctions. These results demonstrate that the simultaneous SERS and I-V technique provides a unique means for the structural and electrical investigation of noncovalent interactions.

Rapid and ultrasensitive detection of acute kidney injury biomarkers CH3L1 and L-FABP using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Chitinase 3-like 1 (CH3L1) and liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) are promising biomarkers for the early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI). Here, a highly sensitive method for the quantitative detection of CH3L1 and L-FABP by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based on graphene oxide/gold and silver core-shell nanoparticles (GO/Au@Ag NPs) was proposed. The results showed that such GO/Au@Ag substrate can achieve rapid sensing of CH3L1 and L-FABP with a wide response range (2 × 10^-1 to 2 × 10^-8 mg/mL and 1.2 × 10^-1 to 1.2 × 10^-8 mg/mL, respectively) and high sensitivity. The detection limits of CH3L1 and L-FABP were 1.21 × 10^-8 mg/mL and 0.62 × 10^-8 mg/mL, respectively. In addition, the simultaneous detection of the two biomarkers in serum was demonstrated, showing the feasibility of this method in the complex biological environment. The detection of CH3L1 and L-FABP will greatly improve the early diagnosis and intervention of AKI.

A van der Waals heterojunction strategy to fabricate layer-by-layer single-molecule switch

Single-molecule electronics offer a unique strategy for the miniaturization of electronic devices. However, the existing experiments are limited to the conventional molecular junctions, where a molecule anchors to the electrode pair with linkers. With such a rod-like configuration, the minimum size of the device is defined by the length of the molecule. Here, by incorporating a single molecule with two single-layer graphene electrodes, we fabricated layer-by-layer single-molecule heterojunctions called single-molecule two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions (M-2D-vdWHs), of which the sizes are defined by the thickness of the molecule. We controlled the conformation of the M-2D-vdWHs and the cross-plane charge transport through them with the applied electric field and established that they can serve as reversible switches. Our results demonstrate that the M-2D-vdWHs, as stacked from single-layer 2D materials and a single molecule, can respond to electric field stimulus, which promises a diverse class of single-molecule devices with unprecedented size.

Plasmonic phenomena in molecular junctions: principles and applications

Molecular junctions are building blocks for constructing future nanoelectronic devices that enable the investigation of a broad range of electronic transport properties within nanoscale regions. Crossing both the nanoscopic and mesoscopic length scales, plasmonics lies at the intersection of the macroscopic photonics and nanoelectronics, owing to their capability of confining light to dimensions far below the diffraction limit. Research activities on plasmonic phenomena in molecular electronics started around 2010, and feedback between plasmons and molecular junctions has increased over the past years. These efforts can provide new insights into the near-field interaction and the corresponding tunability in properties, as well as resultant plasmon-based molecular devices. This Review presents the latest advancements of plasmonic resonances in molecular junctions and details the progress in plasmon excitation and plasmon coupling. We also highlight emerging experimental approaches to unravel the mechanisms behind the various types of light-matter interactions at molecular length scales, where quantum effects come into play. Finally, we discuss the potential of these plasmonic-electronic hybrid systems across various future applications, including sensing, photocatalysis, molecular trapping and active control of molecular switches.

Recent Advances in Single-Molecule Sensors Based on STM Break Junction Measurements

Single-molecule recognition and detection with the highest resolution measurement has been one of the ultimate goals in science and engineering. Break junction techniques, originally developed to measure single-molecule conductance, recently have also been proven to have the capacity for the label-free exploration of single-molecule physics and chemistry, which paves a new way for single-molecule detection with high temporal resolution. In this review, we outline the primary advances and potential of the STM break junction technique for qualitative identification and quantitative detection at a single-molecule level. The principles of operation of these single-molecule electrical sensing mainly in three regimes, ion, environmental pH and genetic material detection, are summarized. It clearly proves that the single-molecule electrical measurements with break junction techniques show a promising perspective for designing a simple, label-free and nondestructive electrical sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity and excellent selectivity.

Charge transport through single-molecule bilayer-graphene junctions with atomic thickness

The van der Waals interactions (vdW) between π-conjugated molecules offer new opportunities for fabricating heterojunction-based devices and investigating charge transport in heterojunctions with atomic thickness. In this work, we fabricate sandwiched single-molecule bilayer-graphene junctions via vdW interactions and characterize their electrical transport properties by employing the cross-plane break junction (XPBJ) technique. The experimental results show that the cross-plane charge transport through single-molecule junctions is determined by the size and layer number of molecular graphene in these junctions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the charge transport through molecular graphene in these molecular junctions is sensitive to the angles between the graphene flake and peripheral mesityl groups, and those rotated groups can be used to tune the electrical conductance. This study provides new insight into cross-plane charge transport in atomically thin junctions and highlights the role of through-space interactions in vdW heterojunctions at the molecular scale.

Using automated synthesis to understand the role of side chains on molecular charge transport

The development of next-generation organic electronic materials critically relies on understanding structure-function relationships in conjugated polymers. However, unlocking the full potential of organic materials requires access to their vast chemical space while efficiently managing the large synthetic workload to survey new materials. In this work, we use automated synthesis to prepare a library of conjugated oligomers with systematically varied side chain composition followed by single-molecule characterization of charge transport. Our results show that molecular junctions with long alkyl side chains exhibit a concentration-dependent bimodal conductance with an unexpectedly high conductance state that arises due to surface adsorption and backbone planarization, which is supported by a series of control experiments using asymmetric, planarized, and sterically hindered molecules. Density functional theory simulations and experiments using different anchors and alkoxy side chains highlight the role of side chain chemistry on charge transport. Overall, this work opens new avenues for using automated synthesis for the development and understanding of organic electronic materials.

Quantum tunneling effect on the surface enhanced Raman process in molecular systems

In this paper, we theoretically study the effect of quantum tunneling on the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of a generic molecule confined in sub-nanometer nanocavities formed by metallic dimers. The tunneling effect was described by the quantum corrected model in combination with finite element simulations. The SERS spectra were calculated by a density matrix method. Simulation results demonstrate that both the field enhancement and the molecular SERS spectra are very sensitive to the size of the cavity. By decreasing the gap size, the local field enhancement first increases then starts to be significantly suppressed as a result of the tunneling effect which neutralizes the positive and negative induced charges in the nanocavity. Consequently, the SERS intensity also experienced dramatic decrease in the short gap distance region. We also show that both the plasmonic enhancement to the local field and the enhanced molecular decay rates have to be taken into account to understand the SERS properties of the molecule in such sub-nanometer nanocavities. These results could be helpful for the understanding of the surface enhanced spectral properties of molecular systems at sub-nanometer nanocavities.

Tracking Confined Reaction Based on Host-Guest Interaction Using Single-Molecule Conductance Measurement

The host-guest interaction acts as an essential part of supramolecular chemistry, which can be applied in confined reaction. However, it is challenging to obtain the dynamic process during confined reactions below micromolar concentrations. In this work, a new method is provided to characterize the dimerization process of the guest 1,2-bis(4-pyridinyl) ethylene in host cucurbit[8]curil using scanning tunneling microscope-break junction (STM-BJ) technique. The guest reaction kinetics is quantitatively by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and in situ single-molecule junctions. It is found that in the single-molecule conductance measurements, the electrical signals of the reactants with a concentration as low as 5 × 10^-6  m are clearly detected, and the reaction kinetics at micromolar concentrations are further obtained. However, in NMR measurements, the characteristic peak signal of the reactants is undetectable when the concentration of the reactants is lower than 0.5 × 10^-3  m and it cannot be quantified. In addition, the strong electric field from the nanogap accelerates the reaction. This work reveals that single-molecule STM-BJ techniques are more sensitive for tracking confined reactions than that by NMR techniques and can be used to study effect of extremely strong electric field on kinetics.

In situ lattice tuning of quasi-single-crystal surfaces for continuous electrochemical modulation

The ability to control the atomic-level structure of a solid represents a straightforward strategy for fabricating high-performance catalysts and semiconductor materials. Herein we explore the capability of the mechanically controllable surface strain method in adjusting the surface structure of a gold film. Underpotential deposition measurements provide a quantitative and ultrasensitive approach for monitoring the evolution of surface structures. The electrochemical activities of the quasi-single-crystalline gold films are enhanced productively by controlling the surface tension, resulting in a more positive potential for copper deposition. Our method provides an effective way to tune the atom arrangement of solid surfaces with sub-angstrom precision and to achieve a reduction in power consumption, which has vast applications in electrocatalysis, molecular electronics, and materials science.

We reported a new method capable of adjusting the lattice structure of solid surfaces with sub-angstrom precision and achieved in situ and continuous control over electrochemical activity.

Water Splitting Induced by Visible Light at a Copper-Based Single-Molecule Junction

Water splitting is an essential process for converting light energy into easily storable energy in the form of hydrogen. As environmentally preferable catalysts, Cu-based materials have attracted attention as water-splitting catalysts. To enhance the efficiency of water splitting, a reaction process should be developed. Single-molecule junctions (SMJs) are attractive structures for developing these reactions because the molecule electronic state is significantly modulated, and characteristic electromagnetic effects can be expected. Here, water splitting is induced at Cu-based SMJ and the produced hydrogen is characterized at a single-molecule scale by employing electron transport measurements. After visible light irradiation, the conductance states originate from Cu/hydrogen molecule/Cu junctions, while before irradiation, only Cu/water molecule/Cu junctions were observed. The vibration spectra obtained from inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy combined with the first-principles calculations reveal that the water molecule trapped between the Cu electrodes is decomposed and that hydrogen is produced. Time-dependent and wavelength-dependent measurements show that localized-surface plasmon decomposes the water molecule in the vicinity of the junction. These findings indicate the potential ability of Cu-based materials for photocatalysis.

Application of Micro/Nanofabrication Techniques to On-Chip Molecular Electronics

Molecular electronics is a promising subject to overcome the size limitation of silicon-based electronic devices. In the past decades, various micro/nanofabrication techniques have been developed for constructing molecular junctions, and a number of breakthroughs are made in the characterizations and applications of the single-molecule device. The history and progress are reviewed in this article, laying emphasis on the recent works on the combination of micro/nanofabrication techniques with other techniques such as electrochemical deposition and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Some prototypical single-molecule devices such as molecular transistors are presented. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the fabrication of single-molecule devices are discussed.

Selective Fabrication of Single-Molecule Junctions by Interface Engineering

Recent progress in addressing electrically driven single-molecule behaviors has opened up a path toward the controllable fabrication of molecular devices. Herein, the selective fabrication of single-molecule junctions is achieved by employing the external electric field. For molecular junctions with methylthio (-SMe), thioacetate (-SAc), amine (-NH₂ ), and pyridyl (-PY), the evolution of their formation probabilities along with the electric field is extracted from the plateau analysis of individual single-molecule break junction traces. With the increase of the electric field, the SMe-anchored molecules show a different trend in the formation probability compared to the other molecular junctions, which is consistent with the density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, switching from an SMe-anchored junction to an SAc-anchored junction is realized by altering the electric field in a mixed solution. The results in this work provide a new approach to the controllable fabrication and modulation of single-molecule junctions and other bottom-up nanodevices at molecular scales.

Monitoring the charge-transfer process in a Nd-doped semiconductor based on photoluminescence and SERS technology

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and photoluminescence (PL) are important photoexcitation spectroscopy techniques; however, understanding how to analyze and modulate the relationship between SERS and PL is rather important for enhancing SERS, having a great effect on practical applications. In this work, a charge-transfer (CT) mechanism is proposed to investigate the change and relationships between SERS and PL. Analyzing the change in PL and SERS before and after the adsorption of the probe molecules on Nd-doped ZnO indicates that the unique optical characteristics of Nd3+ ions increase the SERS signal. On the other hand, the observed SERS can be used to explain the cause of PL background reduction. This study demonstrates that modulating the interaction between the probe molecules and the substrate can not only enhance Raman scattering but also reduce the SERS background. Our work also provides a guideline for the investigation of CT as well as a new method for exploring fluorescence quenching.

Photo-induced carbocation-enhanced charge transport in single-molecule junctions

We report the first example of photo-induced carbocation-enhanced charge transport in triphenylmethane junctions using the scanning tunneling microscopy break junction (STM-BJ) technique. The electrical conductance of the carbocation state is enhanced by up to 1.5 orders of magnitude compared to the initial state, with stability lasting for at least 7 days. Moreover, we can achieve light-induced reversible conductance switching with a high ON-OFF ratio in carbocation-based single-molecule junctions. Theoretical calculations reveal that the conductance increase is due to a significant decrease of the HOMO-LUMO gap and also the enhanced transmission close to the Fermi levels when the carbocation forms. Our findings encourage continued research toward developing optoelectronics and carbocation-based devices at the single-molecule level.

Cross-plane transport in a single-molecule two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions (2D-vdWHs) stacked from atomically thick 2D materials are predicted to be a diverse class of electronic materials with unique electronic properties. These properties can be further tuned by sandwiching monolayers of planar organic molecules between 2D materials to form molecular 2D-vdWHs (M-2D-vdWHs), in which electricity flows in a cross-plane way from one 2D layer to the other via a single molecular layer. Using a newly developed cross-plane break junction technique, combined with density functional theory calculations, we show that M-2D-vdWHs can be created and that cross-plane charge transport can be tuned by incorporating guest molecules. The M-2D-vdWHs exhibit distinct cross-plane charge transport signatures, which differ from those of molecules undergoing in-plane charge transport.

Nanohoneycomb Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy-Active Chip for the Determination of Biomarkers of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Overexpression of the Lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive fraction of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP-L3) is an essential biomarker for early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study, we designed a new surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy active chip for the detection of AFP with high sensitivity and excellent repeatability. This chip was composed of a honeycomb gold nanostructure array with strong electromagnetic field coupling due to the special cavity geometric characteristics of the honeycomb structure. The honeycomb structure exhibited extraordinary performance for the specific detection of AFP in the range of 0.003-3 ng/mL and also determined the proportion of AFP-L3 with a high degree of accuracy, which has shown great potential for application in the clinical diagnosis of HCC.

Controlling Contact Configuration of Carboxylic Acid-Based Molecular Junctions Through Side Group

In this paper, the contact configuration of single molecular junction is controlled through side group, which is explored by electrochemical jump-to-contact STM break junction. The conductance values of 2-methoxy-1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (2-M-1,3-BDC) is around 10-3.65 G0, which is different from that of 5-methoxy-1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (5-M-1,3-BDC) with 10-3.20 G0. Interestingly, the conductance value of 2-M-1,3-BDC is the same as that of 1,3-benzenedicarboxaldehyde (1,3-BDCA), while single molecular junctions of 5-M-1,3-BDC and 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (1,3-BDC) give out similar conductance value. Since 1,3-BDCA binds to the Cu electrode through one oxygen atom, the dominated contact configuration for 1,3-BDC is through two oxygen atoms. The different conductance values between 2-M-1,3-BDC and 5-M-1,3-BDC can be attributed to the different contact configurations caused by the position of the side group. The current work provides a feasible way to control the contact configuration between the anchoring group and the electrode, which may be useful in designing future molecular electronics.

Identifying the molecular adsorption site of a single molecule junction through combined Raman and conductance studies

Single-molecule junctions are ideal test beds for investigating the fundamentals of charge transport at the nanoscale. Conducting properties are strongly dependent on the metal-molecule interface geometry, which, however, is very poorly characterized due to numerous experimental challenges. We report on a new methodology for characterizing the adsorption site of single-molecule junctions through the combination of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), current-voltage (I-V) curve measurements, and density functional theory simulations. This new methodology discriminates between three different adsorption sites for benzenedithiol and aminobenzenethiol junctions, which cannot be identified by solo measurements of either SERS or I-V curves. Using this methodology, we determine the interface geometry of these two prototypical molecules at the junction and its time evolution. By modulating the applied voltage, we can change and monitor the distribution of adsorption sites at the junction.

Electrochemical Modification and Characterization of Topological Insulator Single Crystals

We compare electrochemically modified or thiol-functionalized single-crystal samples of the topological insulator (TI) Bi₂Te_0.9Se_2.1 to freshly cleaved/air-exposed control samples and use X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to investigate the extent of any surface oxidation. XPS spectra for a TI sample maintained at an appropriate potential for 2 h demonstrate the feasibility of protecting the TI surface from oxidation while working in an electrochemical environment. Deliberate electrochemical oxidation, in contrast, generates prominent Bi, Te, and Se peaks associated with oxidation. However, this change is reversible, as further XPS spectra following electrochemical reduction are similar to those measured for an in situ cleaved sample. XPS also shows that adsorption of pentanedithiol (PDT) protects the TI surface from oxidation. Cyclic voltammetry shows that PDT adsorption suppresses electrochemical oxidation and reduction, while electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that it increases the charge transfer resistance significantly. Our work demonstrates the ability to control and characterize the surface chemistry of single-crystal TIs in an electrochemical environment for the first time.
