Abstract
Human health and ecology are seriously threatened by harmful environmental contaminants. It is essential to develop efficient and simple methods for their detection. Environmental pollutants can be detected using photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection technologies. The key ingredient in the PEC sensing system is the photoactive material. Due to the unique characteristics, such as a large surface area, enhanced exposure of active sites, and effective mass capture and diffusion, porous materials have been regarded as ideal sensing materials for the construction of PEC sensors. Extensive efforts have been devoted to the development and modification of PEC sensors based on porous materials. However, a review of the relationship between detection performance and the structure of porous materials is still lacking. In this work, we present an overview of PEC sensors based on porous materials. A number of typical porous materials are introduced separately, and their applications in PEC detection of different types of environmental pollutants are also discussed. More importantly, special attention has been paid to how the porous material's structure affects aspects like sensitivity, selectivity, and detection limits of the associated PEC sensor. In addition, future research perspectives in the area of PEC sensors based on porous materials are presented.

Abstract
The present investigation reports a comprehensible and responsive strategy for identifying atrazine in several conditions using an extensive electrochemical method. CdS Quantum dots were synthesized via a greener approach, and their formation was endorsed by numerous characterization techniques such as FTIR, SEM, Raman, UV-Vis, and XRD. Owing to the splendid electrocatalytic behavior, Green CdS quantum dots (QDs) of crystallite size ∼2 nm was opted as the sensor material and were, therefore, incorporated on the bare carbon paste electrode's surface. The developed sensor demonstrated an impressive outcome for atrazine sensing accompanied by superior selectivity and sensitivity. The lower detection limit (LLOD) of 0.53 μM was attained using the developed sensor in a linear concentration range of 10-100 μM. Furthermore, the practical pertinence of the developed sensor was examined on distilled water, wastewater, and fresh liquid milk, resulting in a tremendous retrieval of atrazine (91.33-99.8%).

Abstract
Mercury (Hg2+) is a highly toxic element and can seriously affect human health. This work proposed a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor with a Z-scheme Fe2O3/CdS heterostructure and two thymine-rich DNA strands (DNA-1 and Au@DNA-2) for sensitive detection of Hg2+. The light excitation of the Fe2O3/CdS composite accelerated the electron transfer among Fe2O3, CdS, and the electrode to produce a stable photocurrent response. Upon the recognition of Hg2+ to thymine bases (T) in two DNA strands to form a stable T-Hg2+-T biomimetic structure, the photocurrent response increased with the increasing concentration of Hg2+ due to the opening of electronic transmission channels from Au nanoparticles to Fe2O3/CdS nanocomposite. Under the optimal conditions screened by the Box-Behnken experiments, the proposed PEC sensor showed excellent analytical performance for Hg2+ detection with high sensitivity, a detection limit of 0.20 pM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, high selectivity, a detectable concentration range of 1 pM-100 nM, and acceptable stability. The good recovery and low relative standard deviation for the analysis of Hg2+ in lake and tap water samples demonstrated the potential application of the designed Z-scheme Fe2O3/CdS heterostructure in the PEC detection of heavy metal ions.

Abstract
The fact that antioxidants scavenge free radicals in the human body and naturally treat many health problems that will occur in this way has increased the consumption of antioxidant-containing foods. However, consumption of artificially prepared antioxidants could cause cancer. Therefore, antioxidants from natural sources are preferred. Quercetin is an antioxidant present in natural samples. In this article, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), a polymer composite (PC) consisting of a mixture of 15% (by mass) polystyrene (PST), 15% (by mass) polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and 70% (by mass) polyindole (PIN), and semiconducting BiVO4 were used to prepare electrodes, and then a photosensitive ITO/MWCNTs@PC@BiVO4-based sensor was fabricated for quercetin detection. Quercetin was analyzed via the photosensitive ITO/MWCNTs@PC@BiVO4 sensor in 0.1 M phosphate buffered saline (pH 7.4) solutions including various quercetin concentrations. The constructed quercetin sensor displayed a wide linear response between 10 and 200 μM and a limit of detection of 0.133 μM. The developed photosensitive ITO/MWCNTs@PC@BiVO4 demonstrated a high sensitivity (442 µA mM-1 cm-2), good reproducibility (relative standard deviation 3.6%), high selectivity and long-term stability (>49 days) towards quercetin sensing. The photoelectrochemical sensor was then applied to detection of quercetin in black tea as a real-life sample. Our study could lead to the development of novel photosensitive PC polyphenol sensors.

Abstract
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, and its early diagnosis can effectively reduce mortality. A new label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor on the basis of Bi2WO6/BiOBr nanocomposite materials has been successfully prepared for the test of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in human serum in this work. The Ag2S-sensitized Bi2WO6/BiOBr heterojunction was used as a photosensitive material, which effectively improved the photocurrent response. On Bi2WO6/BiOBr surface, dopamine immobilized PSA antibody by self-polymerizing to form polydopamine membrane. Antigen and antibody are specifically combined to achieve quantitative detection of PSA according to the current changes at different concentrations of antigen. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the PEC immunosensor has an ideal linear relationship between 1 pg/mL - 50 ng/mL, and the detection limit is 0.084 pg/mL. In addition, the prepared immunosensor has good stability, reproducibility and selectivity, providing a new method for the detection of PSA in actual sample analysis.

Abstract
Melamine contamination in food and beverages affects short- and long-term health. In this work, enhanced sensitivity and selectivity in photoelectrochemical determination for melamine detection was achieved using copper(ii) oxide (CuO) combined with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). A CuO nanomaterial was used to achieve MIP surface modification via co-precipitation synthesis. An MIP film was deposited by polymerizing the methacrylic acid monomer and a melamine template. The properties of the CuO nanomaterials, such as the surface morphology, chemical oxidation state, and crystalline structure, were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), respectively. The diffuse reflection spectroscopy technique was applied to evaluate the optical properties of the CuO nanoparticles. The results indicated that the synthesized CuO nanomaterials had a monoclinic structure with an optical bandgap of 1.49 eV, which corresponds to absorbance in the visible light region. CPE electrodes with surface-modified CuO/MIP were measured using the photoelectrochemical techniques of cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and amperometry. The modified CuO/MIP electrode for melamine detection in 7.4 pH PBS buffer solution exhibited a high sensitivity of 0.332 nA nM-1, with a linear range of 5.0-75.0 nM and a limit of detection of 2.45 nM. Moreover, real samples of various kinds of milk were applied to evaluate the sensing response of the prepared CuO/MIP electrode. The modified CuO/MIP electrodes could be reused seven times with good reproducibility and high selectivity for melamine detection.

Abstract
This study reports a facile approach for constructing low-cost and remarkable electroactivity iron vanadate (Fe-V-O) semiconductor material to be used as a photoelectrochemical sensor for dopamine detection. The structure and morphology of the iron vanadate obtained by the Successive Ionic Adsorption and Reaction process were critically characterized, and the photoelectrochemical characterization showed a high photoelectroactivity of the photoanode in visible light irradiation. Under best conditions, dopamine was detected by chronoamperometry at +0.35 V vs. Ag/AgCl, achieving two linear response ranges (between 1.21 and 30.32 μmol L−1, and between 30.32 and 72.77 μmol L−1). The limits of detection and quantification were 0.34 and 1.12 μmol L−1, respectively. Besides, the accuracy of the proposed electrode was assessed by determining dopamine in artificial cerebrospinal fluid, obtaining recovery values ranging from 98.7 to 102.4%. The selectivity was also evaluated by dopamine detection against several interferent species, demonstrating good precision and promising application for the proposed method. Furthermore, DFT-based electronic structure calculations were also conducted to help the interpretation. The dominant dopamine species were determined according to the experimental conditions, and their interaction with the iron vanadate photoanode was proposed. The improved light-induced DOP detection was likewise evaluated regarding the charge transfer process.

Abstract
The present study investigates basic features of a photoelectrochemical system based on CeO2 nanoparticles fixed on gold electrodes. Since photocurrent generation is limited to the absorption range of the CeO2 in the UV range, the combination with metal nanoparticles has been studied. It can be shown that the combination of silver nanoparticles with the CeO2 can shift the excitation range into the visible light wavelength range. Here a close contact between both components has been found to be essential and thus, hybrid CeO2@Ag nanoparticles have been prepared and analyzed. We have collected arguments that electron transfer occurs between both compositional elements of the hybrid nanoparticles. The photocurrent generation can be rationalized on the basis of an energy diagram underlying the necessity of surface plasmon excitation in the metal nanoparticles, which is also supported by wavelength-dependent photocurrent measurements. However, electrochemical reactions seem to occur at the CeO2 surface and consequently, the catalytic properties of this material can be exploited as exemplified with the photoelectrochemical reduction of hydrogen peroxide. It can be further demonstrated that the layer-by layer technique can be exploited to create a multilayer system on top of a gold electrode which allows the adjustment of the sensitivity of the photoelectrochemical system. Thus, with a 5-layer electrode with hybrid CeO2@Ag nanoparticles submicromolar hydrogen peroxide concentrations can be detected.

Abstract
The ternary CdS/Ag/TiO2 NTs photocatalysts with indirect Z-scheme heterojunctions were synthesized by the photoreduction deposition of Ag and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) of CdS on TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2 NTs). The elemental composition, microstructure, photoresponse and photoelectrochemical property of the photocatalyst were systematically characterized. The results proved that compared with binary heterojunction, the light absorption range of the ternary CdS/Ag/TiO2 NTs photocatalyst was significantly extended, and the photoelectron transportation efficiency was improved. Under sunlight irradiation, the photocatalytic capacity was verified by investigating the photodegradation of MB and RhB dyes. The CdS/Ag/TiO2 NTs exhibited the optimal photocatalytic performance with the degradation efficiency of 82.24% for RhB and 100% for MB. The synthesized CdS/Ag/TiO2 NTs had high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution capacity and stability, and the hydrogen production reached 806.33 μmol·cm-2. Based on the results of electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) and free radical trapping, the photocatalytic reaction mechanism was explained. The synthesis of ternary CdS/Ag/TiO2 NTs provides a practical reference and guidance for designing high-efficient photocatalysts with Z-scheme heterojunctions toward solar energy development for H2 generation, pollutant remediation and photoelectric conversion.

Abstract
In present study, control sized cadmium sulphide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs) and cellulose nanocrystals grafted polyvinylpyrrolidone (CNC-g-PVP) doped CdS QDs were synthesized via co-precipitation. The suggested pathway is fruitful in throwing out organic pollutants like methylene blue (MB) from industrial water and bactericidal applications. A series of characterization techniques were used to determine the structural, optical and morphological qualities of prepared samples. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern verified hexagonal structure with no significant change occurring in the spectrum upon doping (2, 4, and 6 %). The UV-vis spectrophotometer describes blueshift in absorption pattern, resulting in an increase in band gap energy (Eg) upon doping. Catalytic activity (CA) against MB in basic and neutral medium demonstrated remarkable results compared with the acidic medium. Furthermore, bactericidal potential of doped sample (6 %) exhibited the significantly higher inhibition zones of 5.25 mm and 4.05 mm against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) or Gram-positive (G+ve) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) or Gram-negative (G-ve), respectively. In silico predictions for these doped QDs were performed against selected enzyme targets (i.e. DNA gyrase and FabI) to unveil the mystery governing these bactericidal activities.

Abstract
Fe2O3–TiO2 materials were obtained by the cathodic electrochemical deposition of Fe on anodic TiO2 at different deposition times (5–180 s), followed by annealing at 450 °C. The effect of the hematite content on the photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity of the received materials was studied. The synthesized electrodes were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Mott–Schottky analysis, and PEC measurements. It was shown that the amount of deposited iron (ca. 0.5 at.%–30 at.%) and, consequently, hematite after a final annealing increased with the extension of deposition time and directly affected the semiconducting properties of the hybrid material. It was observed that the flat band potential shifted towards more positive values, facilitating photoelectrochemical water oxidation. In addition, the optical band gap decreased from 3.18 eV to 2.77 eV, which resulted in enhanced PEC visible-light response. Moreover, the Fe2O3–TiO2 electrodes were sensitive to the addition of glucose, which indicates that such materials may be considered as potential PEC sensors for the detection of glucose.

Abstract
Small-molecule photosensitizers have great application prospects in photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing due to their defined composition, diversified structure, and adjustable photophysical properties. Herein, we propose a new strategy for PEC analysis based on the target-induced in situ formation of the organic photosensitizer. Taking thiophenol (PhSH) as a model analyte, we designed and synthesized a 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP)-caged coumarin precursor (Dye-PhSH), which was then covalently coupled onto the TiO2 nanoarray substrate to obtain the working photoanode. Due to the intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer process, Dye-PhSH has only a very weak photoelectric response. Upon reacting with the target, Dye-PhSH undergoes a tandem reaction of the detachment of the DNP moiety and the intramolecular cyclization process, which leads to a coumarin dye with a pronounced photoelectric effect, thus achieving a highly selective turn-on PEC response to PhSH. For the first time, this study was to construct a PEC sensor by exploiting specific organic reactions for the in situ generation of small molecule-based photoactive material. It can be anticipated that the proposed strategy will expand the paradigm of PEC sensing and holds great potential for detecting various other analytes.

Abstract
Photoelectrochemical analysis has been widely used in the field of biosensing due to its high sensitivity and strong anti-interference ability. Herein, a portable and versatile smartphone-based photoelectrochemical biosensing platform was developed for the rapid and on-site biomedical analysis. In the system, light excitation and photocurrent measurements were accomplished by a miniaturized and integrated circuit board. Smartphone with a specifically designed application was utilized to wirelessly control the system via Bluetooth. For photoelectrochemical sensor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and gold nanoparticles loaded on indium tin oxide electrodes were utilized as photoactive materials and signal amplification elements, respectively. The gold nanoparticles were also used to immobilized matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) specific cleavage peptide that modified with bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the terminal. In the presence of MMP-2, the peptide was specifically hydrolyzed and cleaved. Thus, parts of the peptide chain and BSA were detached from the electrode resulting in the decrease of steric hindrance and the increase of photoelectrochemical currents. The photocurrents changed linearly with the logarithm of MMP-2 concentrations ranging from 1 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL in both buffer and artificial serum with correlation coefficient of 0.9943 and 0.9698. The limit of detections were as low as 0.48 pg/mL in buffer and 0.55 pg/mL in artifical serum. It indicated that the biosensor has good linearity and high sensitivity, which also verified the effectiveness of the portable instrument. This system provides a pioneering solution for the development of miniaturized and portable photoelectrochemical analysis instruments used for the field monitoring of different analytes.

Abstract
Recently, over utilization of pesticides in agrarian and non- agrarian sectors has resulted in a significant increment in the deposition of their remnants in different segments of the environmental media. The presence of pesticides and transportation of their different metabolites in rivers, ponds, lakes, soils, air, groundwater sources and drinkable water sources has demonstrated a high threat to human wellbeing and the climate. Thus, the removal of pesticides and their metabolites from contaminated water is imperative to lessen the ill effects of pesticides on human beings. In the present article, we have appraised recent advances in pesticides removal utilizing low cost pristine and functionalized cellulose biomass-based derivatives. One of the key focus has been on better understand the destiny of pesticides in the environment as well as their behaviour in the water. In addition, the impact of magnetite cellulose nanocomposites, cellulose derived photo nano-catalyst, cellulose/clay nano composites, CdS/cellulose nanocomposites and activated carbons/biochar on percent removal of pesticides have also been a part of the current review. The impact of different parameters such as adsorbent dosage, pH, time of contact and initials pesticide concentration on adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetics followed during absorption by different cellulosic bio-adsorbents has also been given. The cellulosic biomass is highly efficient in the removal of pesticides and their efficiency further increases upon functionalization or their conversion into activated carbons forms. Nano particles loaded cellulosic materials have in general found to be less efficient than raw, functionalized cellulosic materials and activated carbons. Further, among different nano particles loaded with cellulose-based materials, cellulose/MnO2 photonanocatalyst were noticed to be more effective. So considerable efforts should be given to determine the finest practices that relate to the dissipation of different pesticides from the water.

Abstract
A novel sandwich-type photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) assay was fabricated using the CEA aptamer, Au/BiVO4 and CdS quantum dots (CdS QDs). In virtue of the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Au nanoparticles, Au/BiVO4 showed an effective utilization of visible light and excellent photoactivity, and was employed as the photoanode. After CdS QDs were conjugated to Au/BiVO4 through the sandwich structure based on the hybridization of the CEA aptamer with two partially complementary single-stranded DNA molecules, the photocurrents were further enhanced by a resonance energy transfer between CdS QDs and Au nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the consumption of the photo-induced holes by ascorbic acid could also retard the combination of the electron-hole pairs and cause an increase of the photocurrents. However, the specific recognition of CEA by the CEA aptamer could destroy the sandwich structure and remarkably weaken the photocurrent response. Thus, the quantitative detection of CEA was connected with the decrease of the photocurrent. Benefitting from the above methods for signal enhancement, the PEC aptasensor showed a wide sensing range of 0.0001-10 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit of 0.047 pg mL-1 for CEA detection. The specificity, stability and recoveries of the PEC aptasensor were also excellent. Therefore, the construction of the present PEC aptasensor provides a universal and practical method for sensing other substances.

Abstract
This review paper systematically evaluates current progress on the development and performance of photocatalytic nanofiber membranes often used in the removal of micropollutants from water systems. It is demonstrated that nanofiber membranes serve as excellent support materials for photocatalytic nanoparticles, leading to nanofiber membranes with enhanced optical properties, as well as improved recovery, recyclability, and reusability. The tremendous performance of photocatalytic membranes is attributed to the photogenerated reactive oxygen species such as hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, and superoxide anion radicals introduced by catalytic nanoparticles such as TiO2 and ZnO upon light irradiation. Hydroxyl radicals are the most reactive species responsible for most of the photodegradation processes of these unwanted pollutants. The review also demonstrates that self-cleaning and antimicrobial nanofiber membranes are useful in the removal of microbial species in water. These unique materials are also applicable in other fields such as wound dressing since the membrane allows for oxygen flow in wounds to heal while antimicrobial agents protect wounds against infections. It is demonstrated that antimicrobial activities against bacteria and photocatalytic degradation of micropollutants significantly reduce membrane fouling. Therefore, the review demonstrates that electrospun photocatalytic nanofiber membranes with antimicrobial activity form efficient cost-effective multifunctional composite materials for the removal of unwanted species in water and for use in various other applications such as filtration, adsorption and electrocatalysis.

Abstract
Here, CdS@C nanohybrid composites, where CdS quantum dots (QDs) are uniformly embedded in carbon micro-/nanobelt matrixes, are synthesized via a combustion synthesis followed by a postvulcanization. In the nanohybrids, trap centers are effectively created by the introduction of QDs and moreover their barrier height and filling level can be effectively modulated through a coupling of externally loaded strain and bias. Thus, a single CdS@C micro-/nanobelt-based two-terminal device can exhibit an ultrahigh real-time response to compressive and tensile strains with a tremendous gauge factor of above 104, high sensitivity, and fast response and recovery. More importantly, the trapped charges can be mechanically excited by stress, and furthermore, the stress-triggered high-resistance state can be well-maintained at room temperature and a relatively low operation bias. However, it can be back to its initial low resistance state by loading a relatively large bias, showing a superior erasable stress memory function with a window of about 103. By an effective construction of trap centers in hybrid composites, not only can an ultrahigh performance of volatile real-time stress sensor be obtained under the synergism of external stress and electric field but also can an outstanding erasable nonvolatile stress memory be successfully realized.

Abstract
Continuing growth in global energy consumption and the growing concerns regarding climate change and environmental pollution are the strongest drivers of renewable energy deployment. Solar energy is the most abundant and cleanest renewable energy source available. Nowadays, photovoltaic technologies can be regarded as viable pathways to provide sustainable energy generation, the achievement attained in designing nanomaterials with tunable properties and the progress made in the production processes having a major impact in their development. Solar cells involving hybrid nanocomposite layers have, lately, received extensive research attention due to the possibility to combine the advantages derived from the properties of both components: flexibility and processability from the organic part and stability and optoelectronics features from the inorganic part. Thus, this review provides a synopsis on hybrid solar cells developed in the last decade which involve composite layers deposited by spin-coating, the most used deposition method, and matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation, a relatively new deposition technique. The overview is focused on the hybrid nanocomposite films that can use conducting polymers and metal phthalocyanines as p-type materials, fullerene derivatives and non-fullerene compounds as n-type materials, and semiconductor nanostructures based on metal oxide, chalcogenides, and silicon. A survey regarding the influence of various factors on the hybrid solar cell efficiency is given in order to identify new strategies for enhancing the device performance in the upcoming years.

Abstract
The focus of current research in material science has shifted from “less efficient” single-component nanomaterials to the superior-performance, next-generation, multifunctional nanocomposites. TiO2 is a widely used benchmark photocatalyst with unique physicochemical properties. However, the large bandgap and massive recombination of photogenerated charge carriers limit its overall photocatalytic efficiency. When TiO2 nanoparticles are modified with graphene quantum dots (GQDs), some significant improvements can be achieved in terms of (i) broadening the light absorption wavelengths, (ii) design of active reaction sites, and (iii) control of the electron-hole (e−-h+) recombination. Accordingly, TiO2-GQDs nanocomposites exhibit promising multifunctionalities in a wide range of fields including, but not limited to, energy, biomedical aids, electronics, and flexible wearable sensors. This review presents some important aspects of TiO2-GQDs nanocomposites as photocatalysts in energy and biomedical applications. These include: (1) structural formulations and synthesis methods of TiO2-GQDs nanocomposites; (2) discourse about the mechanism behind the overall higher photoactivities of these nanocomposites; (3) various characterization techniques which can be used to judge the photocatalytic performance of these nanocomposites, and (4) the application of these nanocomposites in biomedical and energy conversion devices. Although some objectives have been achieved, new challenges still exist and hinder the widespread application of these nanocomposites. These challenges are briefly discussed in the Future Scope section of this review.

Abstract
A new strategy for enhancing the photoelectric activity of poly(5-formylindole) (P5FIn) was developed by introducing the inorganic semiconductor material (NiO) to form organic-inorganic heterojunctions. P5FIn/NiO heterojunctions were firstly prepared by combining hydrothermal synthesis and electrochemical polymerization. Due to the synergistic effect between P5FIn and NiO, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of this heterojunction was significantly enhanced compared to pure P5FIn and NiO. The reason for the enhanced PEC performance is mainly attributed to the increased visible light utilization and the bandgap matching effect of the P5FIn/NiO heterojunctions. Based on the prepared P5FIn/NiO heterojunctions, a novel PEC sensor for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) detection was also constructed with a wide linear range of 0.005-50 ng mL-1 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0015 ng mL-1. Moreover, this constructed PEC sensor also had good stability, reproducibility, selectivity, and satisfactory actual sample detection ability. This strategy may inspire more design and application of high-performance photoelectric active material based on inorganic semiconductor and organic conducting polymer heterojunctions. Abstract
Photoelectrochemical (PEC) analysis is a detection technique that has gained a wide attention in sensing applications. PEC presents the advantages of high sensitivity, low background signal, simple equipment and easy miniaturization. In PEC detection, light is used as an excitation source while current or voltage is measured as the output detection signal. The ability to couple the PEC process with specific bioreceptors gives PEC biosensing a unique advantage of being both selective and sensitive. The growing interest in PEC bioanalysis has resulted in essential progress in its analytical performance and biodetection applications. Functional polymers have different applications in the development of novel PEC biosensing platforms. Recently, the interest in polymer-based photoactive materials has emerged as they are efficient and less toxic alternatives to certain kinds of inorganic semiconductors and sensitizers. Moreover, molecularly imprinted polymers are a class of synthetic bioreceptors that are increasingly used in PEC bioanalytics. In this review, we will provide an overview on functional polymer-based PEC biosensing approaches. Novel classes of polymers as photoactive materials are reviewed and selected applications are described. Furthermore, molecularly imprinted polymers in the development of smart and sensitive PEC bioanalytical strategies are discussed.

Abstract
As a class of carbon-based nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) have attracted enormous attention because of their tunable optical and physicochemical properties, such as absorptivity and photoluminescence from ultraviolet to near-infrared, high photostability, biocompatibility, and aqueous dispersity. These characteristics make CDs a promising alternative photonic nanoagent to conventional fluorophores in disease diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare managements. This review describes the fundamental photophysical properties of CDs and highlights their recent applications to bioimaging, photomedicine (e.g., photodynamic/photothermal therapies), biosensors, and healthcare devices. We discuss current challenges and future prospects of photonic CDs to give an insight into developing vibrant fields of CD-based biomedicine and healthcare.

Abstract
Nowadays, increasing the risk for copper leaching into the drinking water in homes, hotels and schools has become unresolved issues all around the countries such as Canada, the United States, and Malaysia. The leaching of copper in tap water is due to a combination of acidic water, damaged pipes, and corroded plumbing fixtures. To remedy this global problem, a triple interconnected structure of CdS/Au/GQDs was designed as a photo-to-electron conversion medium for a real time and selective visible-light-prompt photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for Cu2+ ions in real water samples. The synergistic interaction of the CdS/Au/GQDs enabled the smooth transportation of charge carriers to the charge collector and provided a channel to inhibit the charge recombination reaction. Thus, a detection limit of 2.27 nM was obtained, which is 10,000 fold lower than that of WHO's Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality (∼30 μM). The photocurrent reduction was negligible after 30 days of storage under ambient conditions, suggesting the high stability of photoelectrode. Moreover, the real-time monitoring of Cu2+ ions in real samples was performed with satisfactory results, confirming the capability of the investigated photoelectrode as the most practical detector for trace amounts of Cu2+ ions.

Abstract
In this work, an ultra-sensing photoelectrochemical (PEC) glucose biosensor has been constructed from the bio-derived nitrogen-doped carbon sheets (NDC) wrapped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (NDC-TiO2 NPs) followed by the covalent immobilization of glucose oxidase (GODx) on them (designated as a GODx/NDC-TiO2NPs/ITO biosensor). Initially, the TiO2 NPs was synthesized by sol-gel method and then NDC-TiO2 NPs was synthesized utilizing a green source of Prunus persica (peach fruit) through a simple hydrothermal process. The synthesized NDC-TiO2 NPs composite was characterized by FESEM, HRTEM, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and XPS to determine composition and phase purity. These fabricated GODx/NDC-TiO2NPs/ITO biosensor exhibited a good charge separation, highly enhanced and stable photocurrent responses with switching PEC behavior under the light (λ > 400 nm). As a result, GODx/NDC-TiO2NPs/ITO PEC glucose sensor exhibits a good photocurrent response to detection of glucose concentrations (0.05-10 μM) with an ultra-low detection limit of 13 nM under optimized PEC experimental conditions. Also, the PEC glucose sensor revealed a high selectivity, good stability, long time durability, and capability to analyze the glucose levels in real human serum. Also, the further development of this work may provide new insights into preparing other bio-derived carbon nanostructure-based photocatalysts for PEC applications.
