Engineering of Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4) Based Photocatalysts for Atmospheric Protection: Modification Strategies, Recent Progress, and Application Challenges

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a prominent photocatalyst that has attracted substantial interest in the field of photocatalytic environmental remediation due to the low cost of fabrication, robust chemical structure, adaptable and tunable energy bandgaps, superior photoelectrochemical properties, cost-effective feedstocks, and distinctive framework. Nonetheless, the practical application of bulk g-C3N4 in the photocatalysis field is limited by the fast recombination of photogenerated e--h+ pairs, insufficient surface-active sites, and restricted redox capacity. Consequently, a great deal of research has been devoted to solving these scientific challenges for large-scale applications. This review concisely presents the latest advancements in g-C3N4-based photocatalyst modification strategies, and offers a comprehensive analysis of the benefits and preparation techniques for each strategy. It aims to articulate the complex relationship between theory, microstructure, and activities of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts for atmospheric protection. Finally, both the challenges and opportunities for the development of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts are highlighted. It is highly believed that this special review will provide new insight into the synthesis, modification, and broadening of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts for atmospheric protection.

Heterostructured 2D/2D ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 nanohybrids for photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole and photoelectrochemical properties

In recent years, antibiotic drugs have been extensively used owing to increased industrial growth, and this has created issues related to drinking water and a green environment. Different techniques have been used to resolve these issues, among which heterogeneous photocatalysis has been widely explored for the elimination of toxic compounds from wastewater resources. In this study, ZnIn₂S₄, g-C₃N₄, and ZnIn₂S₄/g-C₃N₄ hybrid heterostructured composites are synthesized via hydrothermal method and used these (i) for the removal of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole pollutant and (ii) photoelectrochemical water oxidation. The nanomaterials were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The developed hybrid heterostructured composites were able to degrade sulfamethoxazole pollutants as well as offer improved photoelectrochemical properties compared to pristine samples. The catalytic performance of the materials developed under visible light irradiation was greatly improved for the degradation of the antibiotic drug up to 89.4% in 2 h. Moreover, the hybrid heterostructured photoelectrode showed a better photocurrent density (8.68 mA/cm²) and exhibited ∼19.2 and 29.9 times greater photocurrent density than the pristine photoelectrodes. Such a considerably increased catalytic activity was attributed to the active separation of charge carriers and transmission. The study offers an innovative approach to develop effective catalysts, and for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole as well as the PEC properties for hydrogen production.

Highly efficient degradation of reactive black KN-B dye by ultraviolet light responsive ZIF-8 photocatalysts with different morphologies

Zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8, a type of metal-organic framework, has diverse applications in multiple catalytic fields due to its outstanding properties. Herein, ZIF-8 photocatalysts with three different morphologies (dodecahedral, pitaya-like, and leaf-like) are successfully synthesized under ambient conditions from zinc salts by altering the volume ratio of methanol and water used as a solvent. The as-synthesized ZIFs have high crystallinity with distinct BET surface areas. The experiments indicate that the ZIFs have high photocatalytic efficiency, in which the leaf-like structure (ZIF-8-F3) is the most efficient in the degradation of reactive black KN-B dye (RB5) under 365 nm UV irradiation. This is due to the efficient inhibition of electron-hole recombination or the higher migration of charge carriers in ZIF-8-F3, thus producing more reactive oxygen species, resulting in greater photocatalytic efficiency. At pH = 11, more than 95% of RB5 is degraded within 2 hours when using 1.0 g L^-1 of ZIF-8-F3. Besides, the photocatalytic and kinetic performances of ZIF-8-F3 are also investigated by optimizing the pH, initial RB5 concentration, and dosage of the used catalyst. These ZIF-8-F3 plates have been shown to be a promising material with high photostability and effective reusability, beneficial to various potential applications in environmental remediation issues.

Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2/g-C3N4 Nanocomposites for Removal of Monochlorophenols from Water

This research employed g-C₃N₄ nanosheets in the hydrothermal synthesis of TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ hybrid photocatalysts. The TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ heterojunctions, well-dispersed TiO₂ nanoparticles on the g-C₃N₄ nanosheets, are effective photocatalysts for the degradation of monochlorophenols (MCPs: 2-CP, 3-CP, and 4-CP) which are prominent water contaminants. The removal efficiency of 2-CP and 4-CP reached 87% and 64%, respectively, after treatment of 25 ppm CP solutions with the photocatalyst (40TiO₂/g-C₃N₄, 1 g/L) and irradiation with UV-Vis light. Treatment of CP solutions with g-C₃N₄ nanosheets or TiO₂ alone in conjunction with irradiation gave removal efficiencies lower than 50%, which suggests the two act synergically to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the 40TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite. Superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are key active species produced during CP photodegradation. In addition, the observed nitrogen and Ti³⁺ defects and oxygen vacancies in the TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites may improve the light-harvesting ability of the composite and assist preventing rapid electron-hole recombination on the surface, enhancing the photocatalytic performance. In addition, interfacial interactions between the MCPs (low polarity) and thermally exfoliated carbon nitride in the TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites may also enhance MCP degradation.

Hydroxyl regulating effect on surface structure of BiOBr photocatalyst toward high-efficiency degradation performance

Herein, photocatalytic degradation of levofloxacin hydrochloride (LVF) by a simple surface hydroxyl strategy on BiOBr photocatalyst was studied under simulated visible light irradiation. Interestingly, the BiOBr contained abundant hydroxyl groups following its modification with glucose, which enhanced the photocatalytic degradation of levofloxacin hydrochloride (LVF). The degradation efficiency of LVF over the optimized composite of BiOBr-5 could reach 91.67% in 20 min, which was much higher than that of pristine BiOBr (59.26%). Following, the biotoxicity of antibiotics to Escherichia coli DH5a could be eliminated after LVF photocatalytic degradation. This strategy proposed in this work can provide new ideas for tuning the surface structures of photocatalysts via specific functional groups for the highly efficient degradation and efficient removal of antibiotics in wastewater.

Efficient solar light facilitated photo-oxidative detoxification of gaseous 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide on ZrO2-doped g-C3N4 under dry and humid air

Photo-oxidation of chemical warfare agents is considered a promising strategy to cope with threats from accidental or intentional release. In this study, heterostructure photocatalysts comprising different amounts of zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) over carbon nitride (CN) were synthesized via simple thermal exfoliation, followed by a precipitation method. The successful photocatalytic detoxification activity of the as-prepared photocatalyst was analyzed against 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) under simulated solar light and natural sunlight irradiation in dry and humid air. As the CN/ZrO₂ demonstrated a high surface area and oxygen doping, the addition of small amounts of the ZrO₂ phase could lead to enhanced photoreactivity in surface chemistry. The as-prepared (CN/ZrO₂-II) degraded 95% of CEES under simulated solar light and 70% under natural sunlight within 90 min. The photo-detoxification of CEES was associated with the generation of holes (h⁺) and activation of oxygen to superoxide radicals (•O₂). Based on analysis results, a reaction mechanism was suggested. The activity of the used photocatalyst could be recovered to 90% of the fresh photocatalyst activity via simple water washing. However, as sulfurous compounds were accumulated on the surface in subsequent cyclic tests, solvent washing was also suggested to maintain high detoxification performance.

Photocatalysis for Heavy Metal Treatment: A Review

Environmental and human health are threatened by anthropogenic heavy metal discharge into watersheds. Traditional processes have many limitations, such as low efficiency, high cost, and by-products. Photocatalysis, an emerging advanced catalytic oxidation technology, uses light energy as the only source of energy. It is a clean new technology that can be widely used in the treatment of organic pollutants in water. Given the excellent adaptability of photocatalysis in environmental remediation, it can be used for the treatment of heavy metals. In this comprehensive review, the existing reported works in relevant areas are summarized and discussed. Moreover, recommendations for future work are provided.

Recent Advances of Photocatalytic Application in Water Treatment: A Review

Photocatalysis holds great promise as an efficient and sustainable oxidation technology for application in wastewater treatment. Rapid progress developing novel materials has propelled photocatalysis to the forefront of sustainable wastewater treatments. This review presents the latest progress on applications of photocatalytic wastewater treatment. Our focus is on strategies for improving performance. Challenges and outlooks in this promising field are also discussed. We hope this review will help researchers design low-cost and high-efficiency photocatalysts for water treatment.

Microplastic degradation by hydroxy-rich bismuth oxychloride

Microplastics, as a class of widely dispersed persistent pollutants, the main reactive oxygen species is far from clarified in their photocatalytic degradation. In this study, a novel hydroxy-rich ultrathin BiOCl (BiOCl-X) was prepared at room temperature. BiOCl-X shows a strong potential for photocatalytic degradation of microplastics, and the mass loss of plastics is 24 times higher than that of the BiOCl nanosheets. More importantly, we explored the photocatalytic mechanism through electron paramagnetic resonance and capture experiments, and found that the surface hydroxyl of BiOCl can effectively enhance the production of hydroxyl radicals, resulting in boosting degradation performance. Here, we provide new insights that photocatalytic degradation of microplastic is dependent on surface hydroxyl groups. This work could be useful for controllable designs of hydroxy-rich photocatalysts for applications in microplastic degradation.

Silicate glass matrix@Cu2O/Cu2V2O7 p-n heterojunction for enhanced visible light photo-degradation of sulfamethoxazole: High charge separation and interfacial transfer

Focusing on the treatment of pharmaceuticals contaminated water by advanced oxidation processes, a novel three dimensional silicate glass matrix (3-DG) coupled Cu₂O/Cu₂V₂O₇ p-n heterojunction was constructed by in-situ hydrothermal technique. The optimal Cu₂O/Cu₂V₂O₇ with 30 wt % Cu₂V₂O₇ (CV-30) degrades 90.1 % sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in 60 min and nearly 100 % removal in 45 min via coupling with 3-DG. Under natural sunlight ∼ 80 % SMX removal was observed. The internal electric field of the p-n junction facilitates the electron flow via the interface. 3-D silicate glass increases the visible light absorption dramatically via internal reflection which facilitates higher exposure for the junction and shortens the diffusion length of charge carriers. The effect of reaction parameters suggests that HCO₃^- and CO₃^2- ions substantially escalate the SMX removal rate. Scavenging experiments and ESR probe suggest O₂^- as the main active species followed by OH radicals. The degradation products were detected by LC-MS analysis and a degradation mechanism was also predicted. The photocatalytic mechanism was explained in terms of the electron transfer facilitated by conventional transfer and Z-scheme. This strategy to construct such highly visible and solar active p-n heterojunctions will pave way for future opportunities for the degradation of recalcitrant pharmaceutical pollutants.

Abundant hydroxyl groups decorated on nitrogen vacancy-embedded g-C3N4 with efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance

Engineering hydroxyl and N vacancies on g-C₃N₄ led to dual mitigation of the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers, which was achieved by enriched hydroxyl groups trapping the holes and stable N vacancies capturing the electrons.

Photocatalytic green synthesis of benzazoles from alcohol oxidation/toluene sp3 C–H activation over metal-free BCN: effect of crystallinity and N–B pair exposure

Porous borocarbonitride, with characteristics of enhanced crystallinity and improved N–B pairs exposure, was employed for the heterogeneous photocatalytic tandem synthesis of benzazoles from alcohol oxidation/toluene sp3 C–H activation.

Rare-Earth Metals-Doped Nickel Aluminate Spinels for Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Visible-light-activated photocatalysts based on samarium-doped, europium-doped, and gadolinium-doped nickel aluminates (SmNA, EuNA, GdNA) were synthesized. The spinel crystalline structures of the doped mixed metal oxides were demonstrated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The presence of the rare-earth metals (REMs) was confirmed by the energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) studies. Ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectra revealed that the REMs-doped catalysts absorb in the full solar spectrum range covering both visible and near infrared wavelengths. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) visualized the profound morphological alterations of the doped nickel aluminate samples. Consequently, the pore volume and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area decreased, while nanoparticles sizes increased. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) exposed that surfaces of REMs-doped nickel aluminates are rich in hydroxyl groups. Finally, the photocatalytic performance was notably increased through doping nickel aluminate (NA) with REMs; the highest activity was observed for EuNA.

Synthesis and fabrication of g-C3N4-based materials and their application in elimination of pollutants

With the fast development of industrial and human activity, large amounts of persistent organic pollutants, heavy metal ions and radionuclides are released into the natural environment, which results in environmental pollution. The efficient elimination of the natural environment is crucial for the protection of environment to against the pollutants' toxicity to human beings and living organisms. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) has drawn multidisciplinary attention especially in environmental pollutants' cleanup due to its special physicochemical properties. In this review, we summarized the recent works about the synthesis of g-C₃N₄, element-doping, structure modification of g-C₃N₄ and g-C₃N₄-based materials, and their application in the sorption, photocatalytic degradation and reduction-solidification of persistent organic pollutants and heavy metal ions. The interaction mechanisms were discussed from advanced spectroscopic analysis and computational approaches at molecular level. The challenges and future perspectives of g-C₃N₄-based materials' application in environmental pollution management are presented in the end. This review highlights the real applications of g-C₃N₄-based materials as adsorbents or photocatalysts in the adsorption-reduction-solidification of metal ions or photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The contents are helpful for the undergraduate students to understand the recent works in the elimination of organic/inorganic pollutants in their pollution management.

Development of Pharmaceutical VOCs Elimination by Catalytic Processes in China

As a byproduct of emerging as one of the world’s key producers of pharmaceuticals, China is now challenged by the emission of harmful pharmaceutical VOCs. In this review, the catalogue and volume of VOCs emitted by the pharmaceutical industry in China was introduced. The commonly used VOC removal processes and technologies was recommended by some typical examples. The progress of catalytic combustion, photocatalytic oxidation, non-thermal plasma, and electron beam treatment were presented, especially the development of catalysts. The advantages and shortages of these technologies in recent years were discussed and analyzed. Lastly, the development of VOCs elimination technologies and the most promising technology were discussed.

Cone-shaped titanate immobilized on polyacrylonitrile nanofibers: hierarchical architecture for effective photocatalytic activity

A new photocatalytic composite material, based on flexible functional polyacrylonitrile nanofibers (denoted as f-PAN NF), was developed by depositing composite layers of α-TiO₂ and cone-shaped titanate (H₂Ti₅O₁₁·3H₂O) successively. The α-TiO₂ coated on f-PAN NF as a seed accelerated the nucleation of titanate. Cone-shaped titanate deposited on α-TiO₂@f-PAN NF tightly at 35 °C with the assistance of cyanuric acid via Ostwald ripening. Due to the uniform distribution of cone-shaped titanate, the photocatalytic performance of hybrid f-PAN NF was remarkable under LED light irradiation and yielded additional photocatalytic applications as well. In addition, the composite photocatalyst exhibited better reusability and retrievability because of the special design involving a bonding between the nanofibers and layers.

Photocatalytic Reforming for Hydrogen Evolution: A Review

Hydrogen is considered to be an ideal energy carrier to achieve low-carbon economy and sustainable energy supply. Production of hydrogen by catalytic reforming of organic compounds is one of the most important commercial processes. With the rapid development of photocatalysis in recent years, the applications of photocatalysis have been extended to the area of reforming hydrogen evolution. This research area has attracted extensive attention and exhibited potential for wide application in practice. Photocatalytic reforming for hydrogen evolution is a sustainable process to convert the solar energy stored in hydrogen into chemical energy. This review comprehensively summarized the reported works in relevant areas, categorized by the reforming precursor (organic compound) such as methanol, ethanol and biomass. Mechanisms and characteristics for each category were deeply discussed. In addition, recommendations for future work were suggested.
