Portable on-off visual-mode detection using intrinsic fluorescent zinc-based metal-organic framework for detection of diclofenac in pharmaceutical tablets

On-site, robust, and quantitative detection of diclofenac (DCF) is highly significant in bioanalysis and quality control. Fluorescence-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) play a pivotal role in biochemical sensing, offering a versatile platform for detecting various biomolecules. However, conventional fluorescent MOF sensors often rely on lanthanide metals, which can pose challenges in terms of cost, accessibility, and environmental impact. Herein, an intrinsic blue fluorescent zinc-based metal-organic framework (FMOF-5) was prepared free from lanthanide metals. Coordination-induced emission as an effective strategy was followed wherein a non-fluorescent ligand is converted to a fluorescent one after insertion in a framework. Conventional fluorometry and smartphone-assisted visual methods were employed for the detection of DCF. The fluorescence emission of the FMOF-5 was effectively quenched upon the addition of the DCF, endowing it an "off" condition, which permits the construction of a calibration curve with a wide linear range of 30-670 µM and a detection limit of about 4.1 µM. Other analytical figures of merit, such as linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, and precision were studied and calculated. Furthermore, the proposed sensor was successfully applied to quantify DCF in pharmaceutical tablets with reliable recovery and precision. Importantly, the elimination of lanthanide metals from the fluorescence detection system enhances its practicality and sustainability, making it a promising alternative for DCF detection in pharmaceutical analysis applications.

Enhanced antibacterial activity of a novel silver-based metal organic framework towards multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia

The growth and spread of multidrug-resistant bacterial species, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, pose a serious threat to human health and require the development of innovative antibacterial agents. The search for an acceptable, safe, and efficient antibacterial is a matter of significant concern. In the present work, silver-based metal-organic frameworks (Ag-MOFs) showed efficient antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae (KBP 11) with a minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of 10 μg mL-1. Moreover, the Ag-MOF showed enhanced antibacterial activity compared to silver ions and silver nanoparticles. Our experimental investigation showed that the antibacterial efficacy is attributed to the production of reactive oxygen species and the release of cellular constituents, such as K+ ions and proteins. The MOF scaffold enhances the stability and controlled release of silver ions, enabling sustained antibacterial activity and minimizing the risk of bacterial resistance development. Additionally, the MOF class, due to the high surface area and porous nature, enhances the transfer of bacteria into and on the surface of the MOF.

Three in one: coordination-induced emission for inherent fluorescent Al-MOF synthesis combined with inner filter effect@aggregation-induced emission mechanisms for designing color tonality and ratiometric sensing platforms

Three phenomena, namely coordination-induced emission (CIE), aggregation-induced emission (AIE), and inner filter effect (IFE), were incorporated into the design of a ratiometric and color tonality-based biosensor. Blue fluorescent Al-based metal-organic frameworks (FMIL-96) were prepared from non-emissive ligand and aluminum ions via CIE. Interestingly, the addition of tetracycline (TC) led to ratiometric detection and color tonality, as the blue emission at 380 nm was quenched (when excited at 350 nm) due to IFE, while the green-yellowish emission at 525 nm was enhanced due to AIE. Based on that, an ultra-sensitive visual-based color tonality mode with smartphone assistance was developed for detection of TC. The sensor exhibited a linear relationship within a broad range of 2.0 to 85.0 μM TC with a detection limit of 68.0 nM. TC in milk samples was quantified with high accuracy and precision. This integration of smartphone and visual fluorescence in solution is accurate, reliable, cost-effective, and time-saving, providing an alternative strategy for the semi-quantitative determination of TC on-site.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs): Advanced nanostructured materials to enhance the functional performance of food packaging materials

Zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) materials are a class of metallic organic framework (MOF) materials that have several potential applications in the food and other industries. They consist of metal ions or clusters of metal ions coordinated with imidazole-based organic linkers, creating a three-dimensional solid structure with well-defined pores and channels. ZIFs possess several important features, including high porosity, tunable pore sizes, high surface areas, adjustable surface chemistries, and good stabilities. These characteristics make them highly versatile materials that can be used in a variety of applications, including smart and active food packaging. Based on their controllable compositions, dimensions, and pore sizes, the properties of ZIFs can be tailored for a diverse range of applications, including energy storage, sensing, separation, encapsulation, and catalysis. In this article, we focus on recent progress and potential applications of ZIFs in food packaging materials. Previous studies have shown that ZIFs can significantly improve the optical, mechanical, barrier, thermal, sustainability, and preservative properties of packaging materials. Moreover, ZIFs can be used as carriers to encapsulate, protect, and control the release of bioactive agents in packaging materials. ZIFs are capable of selectively adsorbing and releasing molecules based on their size, shape, and surface properties. These unique characteristics make them particularly suitable for smart or active food packaging applications. By selectively removing gases (such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, or ethylene) ZIFs can improve the shelf life and quality of packaged foods. In addition, they can be employed to control the growth of spoilage microorganisms and minimize oxidation reactions, thereby enhancing the freshness and extending the shelf life of foods. They may also be used to create sensors capable of detecting and indicating food spoilage. For instance, ZIFs that change color or release specific compounds when spoilage products are present can provide visual or chemical indications of food deterioration. This feature is especially valuable in ensuring the safety and quality of packaged food, as it enables consumers and retailers to easily identify spoiled products. ZIFs can be functionalized using various additives, including antioxidants, antimicrobials, pigments, and flavors, which can improve the preservative and sensory properties of packaged foods. Moreover, ZIF-based packaging materials offer sustainability benefits. Unlike traditional plastic packaging, ZIFs are biodegradable and can easily be disposed of without causing harm to the environment, thereby reducing the adverse effects of plastic waste materials. The application of ZIFs in smart/active food packaging offers exciting possibilities for enhancing the shelf life, quality, and safety of foods. With further research and development, ZIF-based packaging could become a sustainable alternative to plastic-based packaging in the food industry. An important aim of this review article is to stimulate further research on the development and application of ZIFs within food packaging materials.

A novel ratiometric design of microfluidic paper-based analytical device for the simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+ in drinking water using a fluorescent MOF@tetracycline nanocomposite

The regular and on-site monitoring of ions in drinking water is essential for safeguarding public health, ensuring high water quality, and preserving the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems. Thus, developing a portable analytical device for the rapid, cost-effective, and visual on-site detection of multiple environmental pollutants is notably significant. In the present work, a novel ratiometric microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was designed and developed for the simultaneous detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions in water samples taking advantages from built-in masking zone. The μPAD was functionalized with a greenish-yellow fluorescent Zn-based metal-organic framework@tetracycline (FMOF-5@TC) nanocomposite, and the ratiometric design was based on the change in emission color from greenish yellow (FMOF-5@TC) to blue (FMOF-5). The μPAD consisted of one sample zone linked to two detection zones via two channels: the first channel was for the detection of both ions, while the second was intended for detecting only Cu2+ ions and comprised a built-in masking zone to remove Fe3+ ions prior to reaching the detection zone. The corresponding color changes were recorded with the aid of a smartphone and RGB calculations. The linear ranges were 0.1-80 μM for Cu2+ and 0.2-160 μM for Fe3+, with limits of detection of 0.027 and 0.019 μM, respectively. The simple μPAD design enabled the simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions in drinking water samples with excellent accuracy and precision, with spike recoveries of 81.28-96.36% and 83.01-102.33% for Cu2+ and Fe3+, respectively.

Intrinsic Dual-State Emission Zinc-Based MOF Rodlike Nanostructures with Applications in Smartphone Readout Visual-Based Detection for Tetracycline: MOF-Based Color Tonality

Dual-state emitters (DSEs) are entities that exhibit fluorescence in both the solution and solid state, which open up a wide range of possibilities for their utilization in various fields. The development of detection platforms using intrinsic luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) is highly desirable for a variety of applications. DSE MOFs as a subclass of intrinsic LMOFs are highly attractive due to no need for encapsulation/functionalization by fluorophores and/or using luminescent linkers. Herein, a highly stable intrinsic dual-state blue emission (λem = 425 nm) zinc-based MOF with rodlike nanostructures (denoted as UoZ-2) was synthesized and characterized. To the best of our knowledge, intrinsic DSE of Zn-MOFs with blue emission in the dispersed form in solution and solid-state fluorescence have not been reported yet. When tetracycline (TC) was added, a continuous color evolution from blue to greenish-yellow with dramatic enhancement was observed due to aggregation induced emission (AIE). Thus, a sensitive ratiometry-based visual detection platform, in solution and on paper independently, was designed for detection of TC exploiting the DSE and AIE properties of UoZ-2 alone and UoZ-2:TC. The detection limit was estimated to be 4.5 nM, which is considered to be one of the most sensitive ratiometric fluorescent probes for TC sensing. The ratiometry paper-based UoZ-2 sensor displays a reliable TC quantitative analysis by recognizing RGB values in the on-site TC detection with satisfactory recoveries.

Synthesis of L-aspartic acid-based bimetallic hybrid nanoflowers to immobilize snailase for the production of rare ginsenoside compound K

The conversion of the common ginsenoside Rb1 to the rare ginsenoside compound K (CK) using snailase (Sna) is an efficient method for industrial production. In order to improve the stability and recoverability of Sna during the catalytic conversion of ginsenosides, the cage-like immobilised Sna material ZIF-ZnCo-Sna and the hybrid nanoflower-based immobilised Sna material Asp@ZIF-ZnCo-Sna modified with L-aspartic acid (Asp) were synthesised using a one-step method. The addition of Asp provides a richer ligand pattern and the morphology of the material changed from a cage to a hybrid nanoflower. The modified hybrid nanoflower Asp@ZIF-ZnCo-Sna has a larger specific surface area, resulting in an enzyme loading of 142.57 mg g^-1. The more abundant mesopores allowed the enzyme to maintain a good conformation and the enzyme activity was 79.8% of that of the free Sna. In addition, the total conversion rate of Asp@ZIF-ZnCo-Sna to ginsenoside Rb1 was as high as 88.35%, whereas that of ZIF-ZnCo-Sna was 79.12%. Moreover, after 6 cycles, the catalytic conversion of ZIF-ZnCo-Sna and Asp@ZIF-ZnCo-Sna and the crystalline shape remained the same, indicating that both composites have good stability and catalytic properties. This new approach of improving the MOF morphology and enzymatic activity by a one-step addition of small biological molecules provides a simple, rapid, and effective strategy for biocatalysis. It also provides a certain reference value for the immobilized Sna to produce rare ginsenoside CK.

Ultra-small highly fluorescent zinc-based metal organic framework nanodots for ratiometric visual sensing of tetracycline based on aggregation induced emission

Color tonality by intrinsic fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desirable in bioanalytical applications due to its stability, low-cost and robustness with no need for functionalization and/or encapsulation of fluorophores. In the present work, ultra-small and higly fluorescent zinc-based MOFs (FMOF-5) were synthesized. The prepared FMOFs were around 5 nm in size, and gave strong blue emission at 440 nm when excited at 350 nm. Interestingly, tetracycline (TC) selectively tuned the blue emission of FMOF-5 to greenish-yellow emission (520 nm) with dramatic enhancement through aggregation induced emission (AIE). The fluorimetric analysis of TC was carried out through the ratiometric peak intensities of F520/F440, with detection limit (LOD) of 5 nM. To realize quantitative point-of-care based on color tonality, a smartphone integrated with the ratiometric visual platform was thereby design. Hence, TC was visually detected with LOD of 10 nM. The prepared FMOF-5-based probe showed high stability (3 months) and reusability (∼10 times). The developed visual-based platform presents great promise for practical point of care testing due to its low-cost, robustness, ruggedness, simple operation, and excellent selectivity and repeatability.

H-CoNiSe2/NC dodecahedral hollow structures for high-performance supercapacitors

The synergistic effect between metal ions and increasing the surface area leads to the fabrication of supercapacitor materials with high capacities. It is predicted that transition metal selenide compounds will be ideal electrode materials for supercapacitors. However, the defects of poor conductivity and volume expansion of the compounds are fundamental problems that must be solved. In this work, we successfully synthesized the cobalt-nickel selenide nitrogen-doped carbon (H-CoNiSe₂/NC) hollow polyhedral composite structure using ZIF-67 as a precursor. The CoSe₂ and NiSe₂ nanoparticles embedded in the NC polyhedral framework offer a wealth of active sites for the whole electrode. Moreover, the presence of the NC structure in the proposed composite can simultaneously lead to improved conductivity and reduce the volume effect created during the cycling procedure. The H-CoNiSe₂/NC electrode provides high specific capacity (1131 C/g at 1.0 A/g) and outstanding cyclic stability (90.2% retention after 6000 cycles). In addition, the H-CoNiSe₂/NC//AC hybrid supercapacitor delivers ultrahigh energy density and power density (81.9 Wh/kg at 900 W/kg) and excellent cyclic stability (92.1% of the initial capacitance after 6000 cycles). Novel Supercapacitor Electrode Derived from One Dimensional Cerium Hydrogen Phosphate (1D-Ce(HPO4)2.xH2O)

In this manuscript, we are reporting for the first time one dimensional (1D) cerium hydrogen phosphate (Ce(HPO₄)₂.xH₂O) electrode material for supercapacitor application. In short, a simple hydrothermal technique was employed to prepare Ce(HPO₄)₂.xH₂O. The maximum surface area of 82 m² g^-1 was obtained from nitrogen sorption isotherm. SEM images revealed Ce(HPO₄)₂.xH₂O exhibited a nanorod-like structure along with particles and clusters. The maximum specific capacitance of 114 F g^-1 was achieved at 0.2 A g^-1 current density for Ce(HPO₄)/NF electrode material in a three-electrode configuration. Furthermore, the fabricated symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) based on Ce(HPO₄)₂.xH₂O//Ce(HPO₄)₂.xH₂O demonstrates reasonable specific energy (2.08 Wh kg^-1), moderate specific power (499.88 W kg^-1), and outstanding cyclic durability (retains 92.7% of its initial specific capacitance after 5000 GCD cycles).

Recent Advancements of Polyaniline/Metal Organic Framework (PANI/MOF) Composite Electrodes for Supercapacitor Applications: A Critical Review

Supercapacitors (SCs), also known as ultracapacitors, should be one of the most promising contenders for meeting the needs of human viable growth owing to their advantages: for example, excellent capacitance and rate efficiency, extended durability, and cheap materials price. Supercapacitor research on electrode materials is significant because it plays a vital part in the performance of SCs. Polyaniline (PANI) is an exceptional candidate for energy-storage applications owing to its tunable structure, multiple oxidation/reduction reactions, cheap price, environmental stability, and ease of handling. With their exceptional morphology, suitable functional linkers, metal sites, and high specific surface area, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are outstanding materials for electrodes fabrication in electrochemical energy storage systems. The combination of PANI and MOF (PANI/MOF composites) as electrode materials demonstrates additional benefits, which are worthy of exploration. The positive impacts of the two various electrode materials can improve the resultant electrochemical performances. Recently, these kinds of conducting polymers with MOFs composites are predicted to become the next-generation electrode materials for the development of efficient and well-organized SCs. The recent achievements in the use of PANI/MOFs-based electrode materials for supercapacitor applications are critically reviewed in this paper. Furthermore, we discuss the existing issues with PANI/MOF composites and their analogues in the field of supercapacitor electrodes in addition to potential future improvements.

Construction of hierarchical Co9S8@NiO synergistic microstructure for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitor

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) become a research hot-spot owing to their unique properties originating from the ultra-high porosity and large specific surface area with highly accessible active sites. However, the electrochemical performance of a single component is unsatisfied when MOFs are applied as electrode material in a supercapacitor. In this work, the hierarchical hollow framework involving interconnected Co₉S₈ structure and NiO nanosheets (Co₉S₈@NiO) are successfully prepared by MOFs derived methods and proposed to electrode materials. As a result, the prepared Co₉S₈@NiO electrode materials exhibit a superior specific capacitance of 1627 F g^-1 at a current density of 1 A g^-1. Moreover, an assembled hybrid supercapacitor shows a high energy density of 51.65 Wh Kg^-1 at a power density of 749.8 W Kg^-1 as well as excellent long-term cycling stability with 81.79% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. Meanwhile, we concluded that the marvelous electrochemical performance is closely associated with the unique structure of NiO, in particular, the nanosheet surface provides a superior specific surface area and rich accessible redox reaction sites, thus enlarged the contact between the surface and interface of the electrode material. Finally, two supercapacitor devices connected in series can light up four light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for about 30 min. Hence, the presented strategy represents a general route for supercapacitor electrode material with promising electrochemical performance, which can combine the MOFs template and other hierarchical nanosheets together.

Sustainable Synthesis of MOF-5@GO Nanocomposites for Efficient Removal of Rhodamine B from Water

Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF-5) is synthesized by a solvothermal process and graphene oxide (GO) is prepared from the improved Hummer's method. The synthesis of MOF-5@GO nanocomposites is one-pot process via a grinding method and employed for the removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye. The removal efficiency of RhB is found to be 60.64% (151.62 mg·g-1) at 500 ppm. About 98.88% of RhB is removed within 5 min of contact time and increased up to 99.68% up to 10 min. The removal rate of MOF-5@GO nanocomposites is much better than that of pristine MOF-5. Equilibrium adsorption capacity is determined by a series of different experimental conditions such as pH, time, and concentration of dye solution. Although the results also showed that dye removal on MOF-5@GO nanocomposites is well described by the Langmuir isotherm (R 2 = 0.9703), the adsorption kinetics data reveals pseudo-second-order (R 2 = 0.9908). The synthesized nanocomposite is efficient for removal of dye, cost-effective, and reusable. Additionally, stability and self-degradation studies of pure RhB are reported in aqueous solution for up to 120 days at different pH values (pH 1-12).

Insight into the Effect of ZIF-8 Particle Size on the Performance in Nanocarbon-Based Supercapacitors

Carbon materials derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and composites thereof have been intensively investigated in supercapacitors. The particle size of the used ZIF-8 ranges from dozens of nanometers to several microns. However, the influence of the particle size of ZIF-8 on the capacitive performances is still not clear. A series of ZIF-8 with different particle sizes (from 25 to 296 nm) has been synthesized and carbonized for supercapacitors. Based on TEM, EDX mapping, XRD, Raman, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, XPS, and the results of electrochemical tests, the optimal particle size (≈70 nm) for superior supercapacitor performances in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes has been obtained. This important result provides a significant reference to guide future ZIF-8 related research to achieve the best electrochemical performance.

A novel self-supported structure of Ce-UiO-66/TNF in a redox electrolyte with high supercapacitive performance

A novel self-supported structure of Ce-UiO-66/TNF was firstly synthesized by growing Ce-UiO-66 on a TNF substrate. This novel Ce-UiO-66/TNF material was proved to possess a high supercapacitive performance in the redox electrolyte of Fe(CN)₆^3-/^4-, and it was also the first study for Ce-UiO-66 material on the supercapacitor application. High specific capacitances of 6.9 and 2.5 Fcm^-2 can be achieved at large current densities of 20 and 80 mAcm^-2, respectively. After 10,000 charge-discharge cycles, the capacitance retention can be kept at 95% and the coulomb efficiency can be maintained over 98%. Such outstanding electrochemical performance may be related to the redox property of the electrolyte, high specific surface area of the Ce-UiO-66 material, porous characteristic of the TNF substrate and self-supported structure of the whole electrode.
