Two zinc metal-organic framework isomers based on pyrazine tetracarboxylic acid and dipyridinylbenzene for adsorption and separation of CO2 and light hydrocarbons

Thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Catalytic CO2 Cycloaddition and Photocatalytic Benzylamine Coupling Reactions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with permanent porosity and multifunctional catalytic sites constructed by two or more organic ligands are regarded as effective heterogeneous catalysts to improve certain organic catalytic reactions. In this work, a pillared-layer Zn-MOF (MOF-LS10) was constructed by 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrazine (H4TCPP) and 2,5-di(pyridin-4-yl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (DPTZTZ). After activation, MOF-LS10 has a permanent porosity and moderate CO2 adsorption capacity. The introduction of thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TZTZ), a photoactive unit, into the framework endows MOF-LS10 with excellent photocatalytic performance. MOF-LS10 can not only efficiently catalyze the formation of cyclic carbonates from CO2 and epoxide substrates under mild conditions but also can photocatalyze benzylamine coupling at room temperature. In addition, we used another two ligands 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (H4BTEB) and 1,4-di(pyridin-4-yl)benzene (DPB) to synthesize MOF-LS11 (constructed by BTEB4- and DPTZTZ) and MOF-LS12 (constructed by TCPP4- and DPB) in order to explore whether the pyrazine structural unit and the TZTZ structural unit synergistically catalyze the reaction. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum demonstrates that the superoxide radical (·O2-), generated by electron transfer from the MOF excited by light to the oxidant, is the main active substance of oxidation. The design and synthesis of MOF-LS10 provide an effective synthetic strategy for the development of versatile heterogeneous catalysts for various organic reactions and a wide range of substrates.

A gas-selective Zn-MOF exhibits selective sensing of Fe3+ ions by doping with Tb3

Here, a new Zn2+ metal organic framework, {[Me2NH2][Zn2(L)(DTZ)]·2DMF·3H2O}n (Zn-MOF), has been synthesized with low-symmetric carboxylic acid ligand 2,6 bis(2',5'-dicarboxyphenyl)pyridine (H4L) as the main ligand and 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-riazole (DTZ) containing an electron-rich N atom as an auxiliary ligand. Because of its high structural stability and adsorption properties, it can be used to efficiently separate CO2/CH4 and C2H2/CH4. In addition, Tb@Zn-MOF was obtained by doping with Tb3+ to partially replace Zn2+. A study of its luminescence sensing performance demonstrated that Tb@Zn-MOF showed intense luminescence properties and can be used for the directional detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution. Furthermore, PXRD analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were also used to study possible luminescence sensing mechanisms. The recognition mechanism for Fe3+ ions is believed to be caused by electron transfer.

Integrating Self-Partitioned Pore Space and Amine Functionality into an Aromatic-Rich Coordination Framework with Ph Stability for Effective Purification of C2 Hydrocarbons

A great demand for high-purity C₂ hydrocarbons calls for the development of chemically stable porous materials for the effective isolation of C₂ hydrocarbons from CH₄ and CO₂. However, such separations are challenged by their similar physiochemical parameters and have not been systematically studied to date. In this work, we reported a cadmium-based rod-packing coordination framework compound ZJNU-140 of a new 5,6,7-c topology built up from a custom-designed tricarboxylate ligand. The metal-organic framework (MOF) features an aromatic-abundant pore surface, uncoordinated amine functionality, and self-partitioned pore space of suitable size. These structural characteristics act synergistically to provide the MOF with both selective recognition ability and the confinement effect toward C₂ hydrocarbons. As a result, the MOF displays promising potential for adsorptive separation of C₂-CH₄ and C₂-CO₂ mixtures. The IAST-predicted C₂/CH₄ and C₂/CO₂ adsorption selectivities, respectively, fall in the ranges of 7.3-10.2 and 2.1-2.9 at 298 K and 109 kPa. The real separation performance was also confirmed by dynamic breakthrough experiments. In addition, the MOF can maintain skeleton intactness in aqueous solutions with a wide pH range of 3-11, as confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and isotherm measurements, showing no loss of framework integrity and porosity. The excellent hydrostability, considerable uptake capacity, impressive adsorption selectivity, and mild regeneration make ZJNU-140 a promising adsorbent material applied for the separation and purification of C₂ hydrocarbons.

Three novel MOFs constructed from 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene and dicarboxylate ligands with selective adsorption for C2H2/C2H4 and C2H6/CH4

The urothermal reactions of Co(II)/Zn(II) salts with the diverse carboxylic acid and 1,3,5,-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene(tib) ligands afforded three novel MOFs, namely, [Co₃(tib)₂(abdc)₂(ox)]₂·6H₂O (1), [Co₃O(tib)(abdc)₂(DMI)]·2DMI·2H₂O (2) and [Zn₃I₂(tib)₂(napdc)₂]·2DMI·2H₂O (3), (H₂abdc = 5-amino-1,3-benzenedicarboxylate, H₂napdc = 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid and DMI = 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone). In compounds 1 and 2, the Co(II) atoms are connected by polycarboxylate ligands to form two-dimensional (2D) layers that are pillared by tib ligands leading to the formation of 3D porous frameworks. In compound 3, the Zn(II) atoms are linked by tib ligands to form one-dimensional ribbon-like chains which are further connected by polycarboxylate ligands, making a 3D framework possible. Compound 1 can selectively adsorb unsaturated hydrocarbon molecules (C₂H₂ and C₂H₄) and saturated hydrocarbon molecules (C₂H₆ and CH₄). Specifically, compound 1 has high IAST selectivity for acetylene and methane (0.50 : 0.50, v/v) at 273 K and 1 bar. DFT calculations reveal that the π-conjugated hexagonal carbon ring may be the primary adsorption site because there are π-π interactions between the unsaturated hydrocarbon molecules (C₂H₂ and C₂H₄) and the π-conjugated hexagonal carbon ring in the framework of compound 1.

A Tetrathiafulvalene/Naphthalene Diimide-Containing Metal-Organic Framework with fsc Topology for Highly Efficient Near-Infrared Photothermal Conversion

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide broad prospects for the development of new photothermal conversion materials, while their design and synthesis remain challenging. A new Zn-MOF (1) containing both tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) as an electron donor and naphthalene diimide (NDI) as an electron acceptor was constructed by using a space limiting effect. The material exhibited wide absorption peaks in the near-infrared region, indicating that there was strong charge transfer interaction between the TTF and NDI units and providing the possibility of photothermal conversion. 1 shows efficient near-infrared photothermal conversion performance. Under 808 nm laser (0.4 W cm^-2) illumination, the temperature of 1 increased rapidly from room temperature to 250 °C, with good thermal stability and cycle durability. This work provides an efficient strategy for promising materials in photothermal therapy.

Multifunctional AIEgen-based luminescent metal–organic frameworks with coordination-induced emission for chemical sensing

Modifying a partial corn-sql layer-based (3,3,3,3,4,4)-c topological MOF by substitution of OH- with Cl- and its highly selective adsorption of C2 hydrocarbons over CH4

Modifying VNU-18 (a MOF with a partial cone-sql layer pillared by the chains of pillars decorated with OH^-) by substitution of OH^- with Cl^-, a new isoreticular structure, [Cu₆(L)₅·(Cl^-)₂·H₂O·4DMF]·4DMF·6(H₂O) (SNNU-Bai67, SNNU-Bai = Shaanxi Normal University Bai's group), has been successfully synthesized. Furthermore, we deeply investigated the selective C2 hydrocarbon separation properties of SNNU-Bai67 and VNU-18 by single-component gas adsorption experiments, breakthrough experiments and simulation studies. They exhibit highly selective adsorption for C2 hydrocarbons over CH₄ compared to many reported MOFs for the separation of C2 hydrocarbons from CH₄, due to the suitable pore sizes of the partial corn sql-layer built from the isophthalic acid analogy and Cu-paddlewheel units. Interestingly, with the counterion of OH^- in VNU-18 tuned by Cl^- in SNNU-Bai67, the adsorption uptake values of C2 hydrocarbons were apparently improved by 15.0% for C₂H₂, 20.4% for C₂H₄ and 25.3% for C₂H₆, respectively, while the IAST selectivities of C2 hydrocarbons/CH₄ were still nearly the same, which may be because the synergistic effect of interactions of H_C2/1O_COO, H_C2/1N/C_Py, H_PyC_C2, ππ or H_C2C_C2 between the gas molecules and the framework is enhanced by the weaker polarity of Cl^- decorating the framework.

Self-Interpenetrated Water-Stable Microporous Metal-Organic Framework toward Storage and Purification of Light Hydrocarbons

Storage and purification of light hydrocarbons are very meaningful for their high-purity requirements and safety utilization in the fields of industry and clean energy. It is a simple and effective way to achieve this goal utilizing the physical adsorption properties of stable porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this work, a stable self-interpenetrated three-dimensional MOF with a new 3,4-connected topology, {[Zn₂(tpda)₂(4,4'-bpy)]·4DMF}_n (NKM-101; H₂tpda = 4,4'-[4-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)phenyl]dibenzoic acid, 4,4'-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, and DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), has been successfully constructed based on a triazole-carboxyl ligand. The dense functional active sites existing on the inner walls of one-dimensional channels of NKM-101 are beneficial to enhancement of the binding affinities between the framework and specific molecules (CO₂, C₂-C₄). Therefore, the selective adsorption and separation performance of the material on CO₂/CH₄ and C₂-C₄/CH₄ are effectively improved. In addition, NKM-101 also exhibits excellent water stability, making it possible to be a practical material for the storage and purification of light hydrocarbons.

Two ZnII-based MOFs constructed with biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid and flexible N-donor ligands: syntheses, structures and properties

Two new Zn²⁺-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid, i.e. H₄(o,m-bpta), and N-donor ligands, namely, poly[[(μ₄-biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylato)bis{[1,3-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(1H-imidazole)}dizinc(II)] dimethylformamide monosolvate dihydrate], {[Zn₂(C₁₆H₆O₈)(C₁₄H₁₄N₄)₂]·C₃H₇NO·2H₂O}_n or {[Zn₂(o,m-bpta)(1,3-bimb)₂]·C₃H₇NO·2H₂O}_n (1) {1,3-bimb = [1,3-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(1H-imidazole)}, and poly[[(μ₄-biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylato)bis{[1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(1H-imidazole)}dizinc(II)] monohydrate], {[Zn₂(C₁₆H₆O₈)(C₁₄H₁₄N₄)₂]·H₂O}_n or {[Zn₂(o,m-bpta)(1,4-bimb)₂]·H₂O}_n (2) {1,4-bimb = [1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(1H-imidazole)}, have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The complexes were characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Structurally, the (o,m-bpta)^4- ligands are fully deprotonated and combine with Zn²⁺ ions in μ₄-coordination modes. Complex 1 is a (3,4)-connected porous network with honeycomb-like [Zn₂(o,m-bpta)]_n sheets formed by 4-connected (o,m-bpta)^4- ligands. Complex 2 exhibits a (2,4)-connected network formed by 4-connected (o,m-bpta)^4- ligands linking Zn²⁺ ions in left-handed helical chains. The cis-configured 1,3-bimb and 1,4-bimb ligands bridge Zn²⁺ ions to form multi-membered [Zn₂(bimb)₂] loops. Optically, the complexes show strong fluorescence and display larger red shifts compared to free H₄(o,m-bpta). Complex 2 shows ferroelectric properties due to crystallizing in the C_2v polar point group.

Striking dual functionality of a novel Pd@Eu-MOF nanocatalyst in C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond-forming and CO2 fixation reactions

Pd nanoparticles were immobilized on a highly porous, hydrothermally stable Eu-MOF via solution impregnation and H2 reduction to yield a novel Pd@Eu-MOF nanocatalyst. This composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Unprecedentedly, the Pd@Eu-MOF nanocatalyst could be applied with excellent results in two strikingly different, mechanistically distinct, reactions i.e., Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and cycloaddition of CO2 to a range of epoxides. Under the best reaction conditions, 98-99% yields have been attained in both catalytic processes. Moreover, in either case the heterogeneous catalyst was easily recovered and efficiently reused for more than four cycles, indicating its high stability and reproducibility. PXRD, TEM and XPS measurements on the recycled catalyst confirmed that it maintained its original structure and morphology; no Pd NP agglomeration was observed.

Construction and selective gas adsorption properties of two heteroSBU MOFs based on unsymmetrical tetracarboxylate linkers

A hydrostable cage-based MOF with open metal sites and Lewis basic sites immobilized in the pore surface for efficient separation and purification of natural gas and C2H2

Design and construction of stable adsorbents for efficient separation and purification of natural gas and C2H2 is fundamentally important in the chemical industry, and hierarchical cage-based MOFs are attractive in this regard due to their intrinsic structural advantages. In this work, a cage-based MOF (termed ZJNU-15) assembled from a tetranuclear Cu4O-based SBU and an amine-functionalized N,O-mixed donor ligand was solvothermally constructed. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies showed that the resulting MOF incorporates two different types of polyhedral cages in the entire network and bears incompatible open copper sites and uncoordinated amine groups immobilized in the pore surface. In view of its intriguing structural features, its gas adsorption properties with respect to C2 hydrocarbons, CO2, and CH4 were systematically investigated, revealing that it could achieve efficient removal of C2 hydrocarbons and CO2 from CH4 as well as separation of a binary C2H2-CO2 mixed gas, which is associated with natural gas and C2H2 separation and purification. At 298 K and 1 atm, for equimolar binary components, the IAST-predicted adsorption selectivities for C2 hydrocarbons over CH4 are above 17.7, while the CO2/CH4 and C2H2/CO2 adsorption selectivities are 5.0 and 4.4, respectively. Notably, stability studies showed that the framework maintained its structural integrity after being immersed in HCl/NaOH aqueous solutions within a pH range of 4-11 at ambient temperature for 24 h, indicating its good hydrolytic stability under harsh chemical conditions, which might lay a solid foundation for its practical applications.

Four novel Zn(ii)/Cu(ii) coordination polymers containing hydroxyl groups: synthesis, crystal structure, luminescence sensing and photocatalysis properties

CPs 1, 3 and 4 show a 2D network, while 2 possesses a 3D network. 1 is a highly selective and sensitive bifunctional luminescent sensor towards Cu²⁺ and Cr₂O₇²⁻ ions. 3 and 4 exhibit photocatalytic activities for degradation of dyes (MB/MO).
