Abstract
β-Thalassemia especially transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) associates with a hypercoagulable state, which is the main cause of thromboembolic events (TEE). Plasma viscosity and rheological parameters could be essential markers for determining hypercoagulable state in β-thalassemia patients. The traditional methods for measuring viscosity are often limited by large sample volumes and are impractical for routine clinical monitoring. The compact differential dynamic microscopy-based device (cDDM), an optical microscopy for quantitative rheological assessment, was developed and applied for prognosis of the hypercoagulable state in β-TDT with and without splenectomy. The device was performed plasma viscosity measurement using low plasma volume (8 μL) and revealed a value as modulus of complex viscosity |η(ω)| in 7 min. We also parallelly demonstrated the correlation of the viscosity and related-coagulable parameters: complete blood count, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), protein C (PC), protein S (PS), CD62P and CD63 expression, and platelet aggregation test. The thalassemia plasma exhibited a higher value of |η(ω)| than healthy plasma, which can represent a different viscoelastic property among the groups. Even all related-coagulable parameters indicated hypercoagulable state in both nonsplenectomies and splenectomies β-TDT patients when compared to control, only high platelet numbers significantly correlated to high plasma viscosity in the splenectomy group. However, the other coagulable parameters have shown a trend of positive relationship with high plasma viscosity in all β-1thalassemia TDT patients. The relative results suggested that our device would be an approach tool for early detection of hypercoagulable state in transfusion-dependent-β-thalassemia patients, which can help to prevent TEE and the critical consequent-complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE A number of studies have examined the impact of curcumin/turmeric on blood pressure and the factors allegedly responsible for hypertension. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we tried to sum up the existing literature on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating this hypothesis. METHODS Online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar) were searched from inception up to October 2022. We used the cochrane quality assessment tool to evaluate the risk of bias. Outcomes of interest included systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), blood levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD), and pulse-wave velocity (PWV). Weighted mean differences (WMDs) were derived and reported. In case of significant between-study heterogeneity, subgroup analyses were carried out. Significance level was considered as P-values<0.05. RESULTS Finally, 35 RCTs out of 4182 studies were included. Our findings suggested that curcumin/turmeric supplementation significantly improved SBP (WMD: -2.02 mmHg; 95 % CI: -2.85, -1.18), DBP (WMD: -0.82 mmHg; 95 % CI: -1.46, -0.18), VCAM-1 (WMD: -39.19 ng/mL; 95 % CI: -66.15, -12.23), and FMD (WMD: 2.00 %; 95 % CI: 1.07, 2.94). However, it did not significantly change levels of ICAM-1 (WMD: -17.05 ng/ml; 95 % CI: -80.79, 46.70), or PWV (WMD: -79.53 cm/s; 95 % CI: -210.38, 51.33). CONCLUSION It seems that curcumin/turmeric supplementation could be regarded as a complementary method to improve blood pressure and endothelial function. However, further research is needed to clarify its impact on inflammatory adhesion molecules in the circulation.

Abstract
β-Thalassemia patients suffer from ineffective erythropoiesis and increased red blood cell (RBC) hemolysis. Blood transfusion, erythropoietic enhancement, and antioxidant supplementation can ameliorate chronic anemia. Green tea extract (GTE) is comprised of catechin derivatives, of which epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant, presenting free-radical scavenging, iron-chelating, and erythropoiesis-protective effects. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of GTE tablets on the primary outcome of erythropoiesis and oxidative stress parameters in transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT) patients. Twenty-seven TDT patients were randomly divided into placebo and GTE tablet (50 and 100 mg EGCG equivalent) groups and assigned to consume the product once daily for 60 days. Blood was collected for analysis of hematological, biochemical, and oxidative stress parameters. Accordingly, consumption of GTE tablets improved blood hemoglobin levels when compared with the placebo; however, there were more responders to the GTE tablets. Interestingly, amounts of nonheme iron in RBC membranes tended to decrease in both GTE tablet groups when compared with the placebo. Importantly, consumption of GTE tablets lowered plasma levels of erythroferrone (p < 0.05) and reduced bilirubin non-significantly and dose-independently. Thus, GTE tablets could improve RBC hemolysis and modulate erythropoiesis regulators in transfusion-dependent thalassemia patients.

Abstract
As one of the common plasticizers, di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) has been using in various daily consumer products worldwide. Since it is easily released from products and exists in the environment for a long time, it has a lasting impact on human health, especially male reproductive health. However, the detailed mechanism of testicular damage from DBP and the protection strategy are still not clear enough. In this study, we found that DBP could induce dose-dependent ferroptosis in testicular tissue. Mechanism dissection indicates that DBP can upregulate SP1 expression, which could directly transcriptionally upregulate PRDX6, a negative regulator of ferroptosis. Overexpression of PRDX6 or adding SP1 agonist curcumin could suppress the DBP-induced ferroptosis on testicular cells. In vivo, rats were given 500 mg/kg/day DBP orally for 3 weeks; elevated levels of ferroptosis were detected in testicular tissue. When the above-mentioned doses of DBP and curcumin at a dose of 300 mg/kg/day were administered intragastrically simultaneously, the testicular ferroptosis induced by DBP was alleviated. Immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time PCR of testis tissue showed that the expression of PRDX6 was upregulated under the action of DBP and curcumin. These findings suggest a spontaneous self-protection mechanism of testicular tissue from DBP damage by upregulating SP1 and PRDX6. However, it is not strong enough to resist the DBP-induced ferroptosis. Curcumin can strengthen this self-protection mechanism and weaken the level of ferroptosis induced by DBP. This study may help us to develop a novel therapeutic option with curcumin to protect the testicular tissue from ferroptosis and function impairment by DBP.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), an extremely toxic mycotoxin that extensively contaminates feed and food worldwide, poses a major hazard to poultry and human health. Curcumin, a polyphenol derived from turmeric, has attracted great attention due to its wonderful antioxidant properties. Nevertheless, effects of curcumin on the kidneys of ducks exposed to AFB1 remain unclear. Additionally, the underlying mechanism between AFB1 and ferroptosis (based on excessive lipid peroxidation) has not been sufficiently elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and potential mechanisms of curcumin against AFB1-induced nephrotoxicity in ducklings. The results indicated that curcumin alleviated AFB1-induced growth retardation and renal distorted structure in ducklings. Concurrently, curcumin inhibited AFB1-induced mitochondrial-mediated oxidative stress by reducing the expression levels of oxidative damage markers malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxy-2 deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and improved the expression of mitochondria-related antioxidant enzymes and the Nrf2 pathway. Notably, curcumin attenuated iron accumulation in the kidney, inhibited ferritinophagy via the NCOA4 pathway, and balanced iron homeostasis, thereby alleviating AFB1-induced ferroptosis in the kidney. Collectively, our results suggest that curcumin alleviates AFB1-induced nephrotoxicity in ducks by inhibiting mitochondrial-mediated oxidative stress, ferritinophagy, and ferroptosis and provide new evidence for the mechanism of AFB1-induced nephrotoxicity in ducklings treated with curcumin.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Glycemic control is of utmost importance both as a preventive measure in individuals at risk of diabetes and in the management of patients with disturbed glycemia. Turmeric/curcumin has been extensively studied in this field. In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed at investigating the impact of turmeric/curcumin supplementation on glycemic control. METHODS Major online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar) were systematically searched from inception up to October 2022. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) meeting our eligible criteria were included. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) with confidence intervals (CIs) were expressed using a random-effect model. Subgroup analyses were conducted to find the sources of heterogeneities. To detect risk of bias in the included studies, we used the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. The registration number was CRD42022374874. RESULTS Out of 4182 articles retrieved from the initial search, 59 RCTs were included. Our findings suggested that turmeric/curcumin supplementation was significantly effective in improving fasting blood sugar (WMD: 4.60 mg/dl; 95% CI: 5.55, -3.66), fasting insulin levels (WMD: 0.87 μIU/ml; 95% CI: 1.46, -0.27), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) (WMD: 0.32%; 95% CI: 0.45, -0.19), and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (WMD: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.43, -0.22). CONCLUSION Our results indicate that turmeric/curcumin supplementation can be considered as a complementary method in the management of disturbed glycemia.

Abstract
Currently, curcumin-based co-delivery systems are receiving widespread attention. However, a systematic summary of the possibility of curcumin-based co-delivery systems used for the food industry from multiple directions based on the functional characteristics of curcumin is lacking. This review details the different forms of curcumin-based co-delivery systems including the single system of nanoparticle, liposome, double emulsion, and multiple systems composed of different hydrocolloids. The structural composition, stability, encapsulation efficiency, and protective effects of these forms are discussed comprehensively. The functional characteristics of curcumin-based co-delivery systems are summarized, involving biological activity (antimicrobial and antioxidant), pH-responsive discoloration, and bioaccessibility/bioavailability. Correspondingly, potential applications for food preservation, freshness detection, and functional foods are introduced. In the future, more novel co-delivery systems for active ingredients and food matrices should be developed. Besides, the synergistic mechanisms between active ingredients, delivery carrier/active ingredient, and external physical condition/active ingredient should be explored. In conclusion, curcumin-based co-delivery systems have the potential to be widely used in the food industry.

Abstract
Free radicals and oxidants may cause various damages both to the lifeworld and different products. A typical solution for the prophylaxis of oxidation-caused conditions is the usage of various antioxidants. Among them, various classes are found-polyphenols, conjugated polyalkenes, and some sulfur and nitrogen derivatives. Regarding the active site in the molecules, a widely discussed group of compounds are 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. Among them are natural (e.g., curcumin and pulvinic acids) and synthetic (e.g., 4-hydroxy coumarins, substituted Meldrum's acids) compounds. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Numerous approaches have been assigned to treat dyslipidemia (DLP). Turmeric/curcumin have been widely investigated with this regard. In the current study, we explored the effect of curcumin/turmeric supplementation on lipid profile. METHODS Online databases were searched up to October 2022. The outcomes included triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), apolipoprotein B (Apo-B), and apolipoprotein A (Apo-A). We used the Cochrane quality assessment tool to evaluate the risk of bias. The effect sizes were estimated as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Out of 4182 articles retrieved from the initial search, 64 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were included in the study. Between-study heterogeneity was significant. Meta-analysis showed that turmeric/curcumin supplementation exerts statistically significant improvements on blood levels of TC (WMD = -3.99mg/dL; 95% CI = -5.33, -2.65), TG (WMD = -6.69mg/dL; 95% CI = -7.93, -5.45), LDL-c (WMD = -4.89mg/dL; 95% CI = -5.92, -3.87), and HDL-c (WMD = 1.80mg/dL; 95% CI = 1.43, 2.17). However, turmeric/curcumin supplementation was not associated with improvements in blood levels of Apo-A or Apo-B. The studies did not thoroughly address the issues of potency, purity, or consumption with other foods. CONCLUSION Turmeric/curcumin supplementation seems to be effective in improving blood levels of TC, TG, LDL-c, and HDL-c; but may not be capable of improving their pertinent apolipoproteins. Since the evidence was assessed to be low and very low concerning the outcomes, these findings should be dealt with caution.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Liver conditions are major burdens upon health systems around the world. Turmeric /curcumin is believed to possess therapeutic features in ameliorating various metabolic disorders. In this systematic review and meta-analysis of the randomized controlled trials (RCTs), we examined the effect of turmeric/curcumin supplementation on some liver function tests (LFTs). METHODS We comprehensively searched online databases (i.e. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar) from inception up to October 2022. Final outcomes included aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). Weighted mean differences (WMDs) were reported. In case of between-study heterogeneity, subgroup analysis was conducted. Non-linear dose-response analysis was carried out to detect the potential effect of dosage and duration. The registration code is CRD42022374871. RESULTS Thirty-one RCTs were included in the meta-analysis. Turmeric/curcumin supplementation significantly reduced blood levels of ALT (WMD = -4.09 U/L; 95 % CI = -6.49, -1.70) and AST (WMD = -3.81 U/L; 95 % CI = -5.71, -1.91), but not GGT (WMD: -12.78 U/L; 95 % CI: -28.20, 2.64). These improvements, though statistically significant, do not ensure clinical effectiveness. CONCLUSION It seems that turmeric/curcumin supplementation might be effective in improving AST and ALT levels. However, further clinical trials are needed to examine its effect on GGT. Quality of the evidence across the studies was low for AST and ALT and very low for GGT. Therefore, more studies with high quality are needed to assess this intervention on hepatic health.

Abstract
Turmeric and its prominent bioactive compound, curcumin, have been the subject of many investigations with regard to their impact on inflammatory and oxidative balance in the body. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we summarized the existing literature on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which examined this hypothesis. Major databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar) were searched from inception up to October 2022. Relevant studies meeting our eligibility criteria were obtained. Main outcomes included inflammatory markers (i.e. C-reactive protein(CRP), tumour necrosis factorα(TNF-α), interleukin-6(IL-6), and interleukin 1 beta(IL-1β)) and markers of oxidative stress (i.e. total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde(MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity). Weighted mean differences (WMDs) were reported. P-values < 0.05 were considered significant. Sixty-six RCTs were included in the final analysis. We observed that turmeric/curcumin supplementation significantly reduces levels of inflammatory markers, including CRP (WMD: -0.58 mg/l, 95 % CI: -0.74, -0.41), TNF-α (WMD: -3.48 pg/ml, 95 % CI: -4.38, -2.58), and IL-6 (WMD: -1.31 pg/ml, 95 % CI: -1.58, -0.67); except for IL-1β (WMD: -0.46 pg/ml, 95 % CI: -1.18, 0.27) for which no significant change was found. Also, turmeric/curcumin supplementation significantly improved anti-oxidant activity through enhancing TAC (WMD = 0.21 mmol/l; 95 % CI: 0.08, 0.33), reducing MDA levels (WMD = -0.33 µmol /l; 95 % CI: -0.53, -0.12), and SOD activity (WMD = 20.51 u/l; 95 % CI: 7.35, 33.67). It seems that turmeric/curcumin supplementation might be used as a viable intervention for improving inflammatory/oxidative status of individuals.

Abstract
Iron is one of the most important essential elements for cell function. However, iron overload can exert destructive effects on various tissues, especially the liver. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of thymoquinone (TQ) on hepatotoxicity induced by iron-overload in in vitro and mouse model. After in vitro studies, thirty mice were divided into five groups, six each. Group 1 received normal saline. Group 2 received five doses of iron dextran (i.p; 100 mg/kg, one dose every 2 days). Group 3 received TQ (orally, 2 mg/kg/day). Groups 4 and 5 were administrated iron dextran saline (i.p; 100 mg/kg, one dose every 2 days) following treatment with 0.5 and 2 mg/kg/day of TQ, respectively. Based on the findings of the DPPH experiment, although TQ has significant anti-radical potential, at a safe dose of 15 × 10+3 nM, it reduced the IC50 of iron dextran on HepG2 cells by about 25%, in in vitro. Following administration of low-dose TQ (0.5 mg/kg), a significant improvement was observed in serum hepatic enzymes activity and hepatic lipid peroxidation compared to iron dextran. However, administration of TQ-high dose (2 mg/kg) led to decrease antioxidant defense alongside increased serum hepatic enzymes and pathological damages in iron dextran-treated animals. Due to the different efficacy of TQ in treatment groups, it seems that the TQ therapeutic index is low and does not have significant safety in the iron overload status.

Abstract
Macaroni is a commercially available Italian food product that is popular among consumers around the world. The supplementation of green tea extract (GTE) and turmeric curcumin extract (TCE) in macaroni may serve as promising and beneficial bioactive ingredients. We aimed to produce functional macaroni, assess the degree of consumer satisfaction and study the antidiabetic activity in diabetic rats. In this study, macaroni was fortified with GTE, TCE and a mixture of GTE and TCE ratio of 1:1, w/w (GTE/TCE). The resulting products were then analyzed in terms of their chemical compositions, while the degree of consumer satisfaction was monitored and the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects in streptozotocin (STZ)-rats were investigated. GTE/TCE-M exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity (p < 0.05), while phenolics were most abundant in GTE-M. The overall preference for GTE-M, TCE-M and GTE/TCE-M were within ranges of 4.7-5.1, 5.9-6.7 and 6.2-8.2, respectively, in the nine-point hedonic scale. Consumption of these three preparations of macaroni (30 and 300 mg/kg each) neither decreased nor exacerbated increasing blood glucose levels in diabetic rats, while GTE-M (30 mg/kg) tended to lower increased serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels. In conclusion, GTE/TCE-M containing high amounts of bioactive EGCG and curcumin exerted the strongest degree of antioxidant activity and received the highest level of acceptance. Importantly, consumption of GTE-M tentatively ameliorated serum lipid abnormalities in diabetic STZ-induced rats by inhibiting lipase digestion and lipid absorption. Herein, we are proposing that GTE-fortified macaroni is a functional food that can mitigate certain metabolic syndromes.

Abstract
β-Thalassemia is characterized by ineffective erythropoiesis leading to chronic anemia. Thus, increased iron absorption from the duodenum and via blood transfusions is required to maintain normal blood hemoglobin (Hb) levels and iron chelators in the removal of excessive iron. Certain agents are also needed for the improvement of stress erythropoiesis and iron dysregulation. Green tea extract (GTE), which is rich in epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), is known to possess radical scavenging and iron-chelating activities. We aimed to assess the effects of green tea extract on erythroid regulators, iron mobilization and anti-lipid peroxidation in the liver, spleen, and kidneys of iron-loaded β-globin gene knockout thalassemic (BKO) mice. Our results indicate that treatments of green tea extract and/or deferiprone (DFP) diminished levels of plasma erythropoietin (EPO) and erythroferrone (ERFE), and consistently suppressed kidney Epo and spleen Erfe mRNA expressions (p < .05) in iron- loaded BKO mice when compared with untreated mice. Coincidently, the treatments decreased plasma ferritin (Ft) levels, iron content levels in the liver (p < .05), spleen (p < .05), and kidney tissues of iron-loaded BKO mice. Furthermore, lipid-peroxidation products in the tissues and plasma were also decreased when compared with untreated mice. This is the first evidence of the orchestral role of green tea extract abundant with epigallocatechin-3-gallate in improving ineffective erythropoiesis, iron dysregulation and oxidative stress in iron-overloaded β-thalassemic mice.

Abstract
Ischaemia–reperfusion (I–R) injury, initiated via bursts of reactive oxygen species produced during the reoxygenation phase following hypoxia, is well known in a variety of acute circumstances. We argue here that I–R injury also underpins elements of the pathology of a variety of chronic, inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, ME/CFS and, our chief focus and most proximally, Long COVID. Ischaemia may be initiated via fibrin amyloid microclot blockage of capillaries, for instance as exercise is started; reperfusion is a necessary corollary when it finishes. We rehearse the mechanistic evidence for these occurrences here, in terms of their manifestation as oxidative stress, hyperinflammation, mast cell activation, the production of marker metabolites and related activities. Such microclot-based phenomena can explain both the breathlessness/fatigue and the post-exertional malaise that may be observed in these conditions, as well as many other observables. The recognition of these processes implies, mechanistically, that therapeutic benefit is potentially to be had from antioxidants, from anti-inflammatories, from iron chelators, and via suitable, safe fibrinolytics, and/or anti-clotting agents. We review the considerable existing evidence that is consistent with this, and with the biochemical mechanisms involved.

Abstract
β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease (SCD) are inherited hemoglobinopathies that result in both quantitative and qualitative variations in the β-globin chain. These in turn lead to instability in the generated hemoglobin (Hb) or to a globin chain imbalance that affects the oxidative environment both intracellularly and extracellularly. While oxidative stress is not among the primary etiologies of β-thalassemia and SCD, it plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Different mechanisms exist behind the development of oxidative stress; the result of which is cytotoxicity, causing the oxidation of cellular components that can eventually lead to cell death and organ damage. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of oxidative stress development in β-thalassemia and SCD and describe the current and potential antioxidant therapeutic strategies. Finally, we discuss the role of targeted therapy in achieving an optimal redox balance.

Abstract
Iron fortifications are used for the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia; however, iron dosing may cause oxidative damage to the gut lumen. Thai Sinlek rice is abundant in iron and contains phytochemicals. We aimed at evaluating the effect of an iron-rice (IR) hydrolysate drink (100 mL/serving) on neurological function, red cell indices and iron status in elders. Healthy elderly subjects were divided into three non-anemic groups and one anemic group. The non-anemic groups consumed one WR (2 mg iron/serving) and two IR drinks (15 and 27 mg iron/serving) (groups A, B and D, respectively), while the anemic group consumed one IR drink (15 mg iron serving) (group C) every day for 30 days. There were no significant differences in the MMSE Thai 2002 and PHQ9 test scores for members of all groups, while the nutrition scores and body weight values of group D subjects were significantly increased. Hemoglobin (Hb) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations increased significantly only in group C. Serum iron and transferrin saturation levels tended to increase in group A, while these levels were decreased in members of group C. Serum antioxidant activity levels were increased in all groups, and were highest in group C. Thus, consumption of an IR drink for 15 days functioned to increase Hb and antioxidant capacity levels in anemic elders.

Abstract
Redox-active iron generates reactive oxygen species that can cause oxidative organ dysfunction. Thus, the anti-oxidative systems in the body and certain dietary antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, are needed to control oxidative stress. We aimed to investigate the effects of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma technology in the preparation of Riceberry™ rice flour (PRBF) on iron-induced oxidative stress in mice. PRBF using plasma technology was rich in anthocyanins, mainly cyanidine-3-glucoside and peonidine-3-glucoside. PRBF (5 mg AE/mg) lowered WBC numbers in iron dextran (FeDex)-loaded mice and served as evidence of the reversal of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity, plasma total antioxidant capacity, and plasma and liver thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in the loading mice. Consequently, the PRBF treatment was observed to be more effective than NAC treatment. PRBF would be a powerful supplementary and therapeutic antioxidant product that is understood to be more potent than NAC in ameliorating the effects of iron-induced oxidative stress.

Abstract
Iron is an essential mineral that serves as a prosthetic group for a variety of proteins involved in vital cellular processes. The iron economy within humans is highly conserved in that there is no proper iron excretion pathway. Therefore, iron homeostasis is highly evolved to coordinate iron acquisition, storage, transport, and recycling efficiently. A disturbance in this state can result in excess iron burden in which an ensuing iron-mediated generation of reactive oxygen species imparts widespread oxidative damage to proteins, lipids, and DNA. On the contrary, problems in iron deficiency either due to genetic or nutritional causes can lead to a number of iron deficiency disorders. Iron chelation strategies have been in the works since the early 1900s, and they still remain the most viable therapeutic approach to mitigate the toxic side effects of excess iron. Intense investigations on improving the efficacy of chelation strategies while being well tolerated and accepted by patients have been a particular focus for many researchers over the past 30 years. Moreover, recent advances in our understanding on the role of iron in the pathogenesis of different diseases (both in iron overload and iron deficiency conditions) motivate the need to develop new therapeutics. We summarized recent investigations into the role of iron in health and disease conditions, iron chelation, and iron delivery strategies. Information regarding small molecule as well as macromolecular approaches and how they are employed within different disease pathogenesis such as primary and secondary iron overload diseases, cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, infections, and in iron deficiency is provided.

Abstract
The combinations of curcumin with green tea flavan-3-ols produce various synergistic biological effects. This study aimed to verify the antioxidant effects in mixtures of curcumin with (-)-epicatechin (EC) or with EC fraction from green tea in a non-polar lipid system (triacylglycerol autoxidation) and in a polar conditions (ABTS assay). Curcumin was 2.5-2.6 and 2.9-3.6 times weaker antioxidant than EC and EC fraction, respectively. The synergism was found in mixtures using the isobologram analysis of ABTS•+ scavenging activity results. The strongest effect with a combination index of 0.751 was in the equimolar mixture of pure compounds. In the lipid system, antagonism occurred for curcumin and EC fraction combination. However, an additive effect was found between curcumin and EC. In conclusion, the antioxidant effects in the curcumin and EC mixtures depended on the polarity of the assay media, the ratio of antioxidants, and presence other phenolics in the system.

Abstract
Anemia, characterized by a decrease of the hemoglobin level in the blood and a reduction in carrying capacity of oxygen, is a major public health problem which affects people of all ages. The methods used to treat anemia are blood transfusion and oral administration of iron-based supplements, but these treatments are associated with a number of side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and stomach pain, which limit its long-term use. In addition, oral iron supplements are poorly absorbed in the intestinal tract, due to overexpression of hepcidin, a peptide hormone that plays a central role in iron homeostasis. In this review, we conducted an analysis of the literature on biologically active compounds and plant extracts used in the treatment of various types of anemia. The purpose of this review is to provide up-to-date information on the use of these compounds and plant extracts, in order to explore their therapeutic potential. The advantage of using them is that they are available from natural resources and can be used as main, alternative, or adjuvant therapies in many diseases, such as various types of anemia.

Abstract
Background: Although iron chelation therapies have been available for many years for thalassemia intermedia patients, iron accumulation remains the major cause of death. Therefore, the need for additional chelation options is in demand. This randomized controlled study aimed to understand the effects of green tea on iron balance in thalassemia intermedia patients. Methods: Using a random selection method, 141 thalassemia intermedia patients were initially screened for inclusion in this trial; only 68 patients included after applying exclusion criteria. Two equal groups were generated (n=34/group): green tea (three cups/day after meals) + usual treatment (deferasirox iron chelator and on demand blood transfusion); and control (only usual treatment). The study lasted for a period of 12 months. Patients failing to comply to the trial methodology were excluded, leaving a final total of 29 patients in the green tea group and 28 patients in the control group. Liver iron concentration, and serum ferritin were assessed at baseline and 12 months, while hemoglobin levels were assessed monthly. Results: At baseline, both groups were matched regarding general demographics. At 12 months, the net drop of liver iron concentration in the green tea group (7.3 mg Fe/g dry weight) was significantly higher than the control group (4.6 mg Fe/g dry weight) (p<0.05). This was also seen with serum ferritin; net reduction in green tea and control groups were 1289 ng/ml and 871 ng/ml, respectively (p<0.05). Hemoglobin levels were slightly higher in the green tea group compared with the control group, but this was not significant. Conclusions: Regular green tea consumption had a significant capability to improve iron deposition in thalassemia intermedia patients who already undergo deferesirox iron chelation therapy.
