TiO2/Fe2O3 heterostructures with enhanced photocatalytic reduction of Cr(vi) under visible light irradiation

Understanding and optimizing the sensitization of anatase titanium dioxide surface with hematite clusters

The presence of hematite (Fe2O3) clusters at low coverage on titanium dioxide (TiO2) surface has been observed to enhance photocatalytic activity, while excess loading of hematite is detrimental. We conduct a comprehensive density functional theory study of Fe2O3clusters adsorbed on the anatase TiO2(101) surface to investigate the effect of Fe2O3on TiO2. Our study shows that TiO2exhibits improved photocatalytic properties with hematite clusters at low coverage, as evidenced by a systematic study conducted by increasing the number of cluster adsorbates. The adsorption of the clusters generates impurity states in the band gap improving light absorption and consequently affecting the charge transfer dynamics. Furthermore, the presence of hematite clusters enhances the activity of TiO2in the hydrogen evolution reaction. The Fe valence mixing present in some clusters leads to a significant increase in H2evolution rate compared with the fixed +3 valence of Fe in hematite. We also investigate the effect of oxygen defects and find extensive modifications in the electronic properties and local magnetism of the TiO2-Fe2O3system, demonstrating the wide-ranging effect of oxygen defects in the combined system.

TiO2nanorod arrays/Ti3C2TxMXene nanosheet composites with efficient photocatalytic activity

Semiconductor photocatalysis holds significant promise in addressing both environmental and energy challenges. However, a major hurdle in photocatalytic processes remains the efficient separation of photoinduced charge carriers. In this study, TiO2nanorod arrays were employed by glancing angle deposition technique, onto which Ti3C2TxMXene was deposited through a spin-coating process. This hybrid approach aims to amplify the photocatalytic efficacy of TiO2nanorod arrays. Through photocurrent efficiency characterization testing, an optimal loading of TiO2/Ti3C2Txcomposites is identified. Remarkably, this composite exhibits a 40% increase in photocurrent density in comparison to pristine TiO2. This enhancement is attributed to the exceptional electrical conductivity and expansive specific surface area inherent to Ti3C2TxMXene. These attributes facilitate swift transport of photoinduced electrons, consequently refining the separation and migration of electron-hole pairs. The synergistic TiO2/Ti3C2Txcomposite showcases its potential across various domains including photoelectrochemical water splitting and diverse photocatalytic devices. As such, this composite material stands as a novel and promising entity for advancing photocatalytic applications. This study can offer an innovative approach for designing simple and efficient photocatalytic materials composed of MXene co-catalysts and TiO2for efficient water electrolysis on semiconductors.

Harvesting visible light for enhanced catalytic degradation of wastewater using TiO2@Fe3O4 embedded on two dimensional reduced graphene oxide nanosheets

Carbon-integrated binary metal oxide semiconductors have gained prominence in the last decade as a better material for photocatalytic wastewater treatment technology. In this regard, this research describes the investigation of the binary metal oxide TiO2@Fe3O4 embedded on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets synthesized through a combination of sol-gel, chemical precipitation, and Hummer's processes. Besides, the catalyst is applied for the photocatalytic degradation of organic chlorophenol pollutants. The characterized diffraction results showed the peak broadening of the rGO-TiO2@Fe3O4 composite formed with tetragonal and cubic structures having small crystallite sizes. The TEM observation shows an enormous miniature of TiO2@Fe3O4 nanospheres spread on the folded 2D-rGO nanosheets with a large BET surface area. The XPS result holds the mixed phases of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3. Finally, the catalyst demonstrated a low band gap with extended light absorption towards visible light irradiation. The synergistic interactions between Fe3+ and Fe2+ improved the visible light activity due to the incorporation of rGO, and also possessed good recycling capacity. The increased mobility of electrons at the interfaces of TiO2 and Fe3O4 due to the mixing of rGO results in the separation of charge carriers by elevating the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of chlorophenol.

Experimental and computational study of metal oxide nanoparticles for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: a review

Photocatalysis is a more proficient technique that involves the breakdown or decomposition of different organic contaminants, various dyes, and harmful viruses and fungi using UV or visible light solar spectrum. Metal oxides are considered promising candidate photocatalysts owing to their low cost, efficiency, simple fabricating method, sufficient availability, and environment-friendliness for photocatalytic applications. Among metal oxides, TiO2 is the most studied photocatalyst and is highly applied in wastewater treatment and hydrogen production. However, TiO2 is relatively active only under ultraviolet light due to its wide bandgap, which limits its applicability because the production of ultraviolet is expensive. At present, the discovery of a photocatalyst of suitable bandgap with visible light or modification of the existing photocatalyst is becoming very attractive for photocatalysis technology. However, the major drawbacks of photocatalysts are the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, the ultraviolet light activity limitations, and low surface coverage. In this review, the most commonly used synthesis method for metal oxide nanoparticles, photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, and applications and toxicity of different dyes are comprehensively highlighted. In addition, the challenges in the photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, strategies to suppress these challenges, and metal oxide studied by density functional theory for photocatalytic applications are described in detail.

Self-cleaning and photocatalytic properties of eco-friendly clay-based facing bricks from industrial and natural wastes

In this study, self-cleaning and photocatalytic performance of clay-based facing bricks produced using two different wastes (red mud: RM, hazelnut shell: HS) under visible light by an organic pollutant, methylene blue (MB), were discussed. The results revealed that the incorporation of waste into the samples improved the photocatalytic activity for certain ratios and also provided the desired physical properties according to the relevant standards. In terms of self-cleaning performance, the best results were obtained from the samples containing 5% RM (RM5HS) and 10% RM (RM10HS) combined with 10% of HS by weight. While RM10HS with an apparent reaction rate of 2.99 × 10^-1 h^-1 achieved total removal efficiency of 89.74%, RM5HS with an apparent reaction rate of 2.82 × 10^-1 h^-1 was able to remove 91.21% of initial concentration of MB dye.

Fabrication of nitrogen doped TiO2/Fe2O3 nanostructures for photocatalytic oxidation of methanol based wastewater

An important industrial process that often occurs on the surface of a heterogeneous catalyst using thermochemical or photochemical could help in the oxidation of methanol-based wastewater to formaldehyde. Titania-based photocatalysts have drawn a lot of interest from scientists because they are a reliable and affordable catalyst material for photocatalytic oxidation processes in the presence of light energy. In this study, a straight-forward hydrothermal method for producing n-TiO₂@α-Fe₂O₃ composite photocatalysts and hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) nanocubes has been done. By adjusting the ratio of n-TiO₂ in the prepared composite photocatalysts, the enhancing influence of the nitrogen-doped titania on the photocatalytic characteristics of the prepared materials was investigated. The prepared materials were thoroughly characterized using common physiochemical methods, such as transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy (XPS), physisorption (BET), and others, in order to learn more about the structure The results obtained showed that nitrogen-doped titania outperforms non-doped titania for methanol photooxidation. The addition of nitrogen-doped titania to their surfaces resulted in an even greater improvement in the photooxidation rates of the methanol coupled with hematite. The photooxidation of methanol in the aqueous solution to simulate its concentration in the wastewater has been occurred. After 3 h, the four weight percent of n-TiO₂@α-Fe₂O₃ photocatalyst showed the highest rate of HCHO production.

Composite TiO2-based photocatalyst with enhanced performance

TiO₂ is the most studied photocatalyst because of its non-toxicity, chemical stability, and low cost. However, the problem of TiO₂ is its low activity in the visible region of the spectrum. In this study, we focused on the preparation of composite photocatalytic materials with altered light absorption properties. TiO₂ P25 and various metal oxides were mechanically joined by ball-milling and immobilized on glass plates. The prepared samples were evaluated based on their ability to degrade NO in gas phase. The formation of undesirable byproducts was also investigated. Four best performing composites were later chosen, characterized, and further evaluated under various conditions. According to their performance, the metal oxide additives can be divided into three groups. P25/Fe₂O₃ showed the most promising results-an increase in overall deNO_x activity under modified ISO conditions and altered selectivity (less NO₂ is formed) under both simulated outdoor and simulated indoor conditions. On the other hand, P25/V₂O₅ composite showed negligible photocatalytic activity. The intermediate group includes P25/WO₃ and P25/ZnO photocatalysts, whose performances are similar to those of pristine P25.

Visible-Light Activation of Persulfate or H2O2 by Fe2O3/TiO2 Immobilized on Glass Support for Photocatalytic Removal of Amoxicillin: Mechanism, Transformation Products, and Toxicity Assessment

Fe₂O₃/TiO₂ nanocomposites were fabricated via a facile impregnation/calcination technique employing different amounts iron (III) nitrate onto commercial TiO₂ (P25 Aeroxide). The as-prepared Fe₂O₃/TiO₂ nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDXS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET), electron impedance spectroscopy (EIS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). As a result, 5% (w/w) Fe₂O₃/TiO₂ achieved the highest photocatalytic activity in the slurry system and was successfully immobilized on glass support. Photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation was assessed by treating pharmaceutical amoxicillin (AMX) in the presence and absence of additional oxidants: hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and persulfate salts (PS). The influence of pH and PS concentration on AMX conversion rate was established by means of statistical planning and response surface modeling. Results revealed optimum conditions of [S₂O₈^2-] = 1.873 mM and pH = 4.808; these were also utilized in presence of H₂O₂ instead of PS in long-term tests. The fastest AMX conversion possessing a zero-order rate constant of 1.51 × 10^-7 M·min^-1 was achieved with the photocatalysis + PS system. The AMX conversion pathway was established, and the evolution/conversion of formed intermediates was correlated with the changes in toxicity toward Vibrio fischeri. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging was also utilized to investigate the AMX conversion mechanism, revealing the major contribution of photogenerated h⁺ in all processes.

Visible-light photooxidation of ciprofloxacin utilizing metal oxide incorporated sol-gel processed La-doped NaTaO3 nanoparticles: A comparative study

The supper dissemination of antibiotic waste in water resources has exponentially progressed the vital water and soil pollution that affect human health and the environment. Consequently, there have been several types of research anticipated for the green mineralization of such pollutants. Herein, we intended a surfactant-aided sol-gel formation of lanthanum-doped sodium tantalate (LNTO) nanocrystals. The synthesized 13 nm averaged-size perovskite LNTO nanocrystals were responsive to visible-light irradiation by incorporation of 4.4-5.2 nm oxide nanoparticles, namely Bi₂O₃, CdO, Fe₂O₃, and CuO at 4.0 wt% through coprecipitation. The formed nanomaterials unveiled mesostructured surface textures with specific surface areas of 199-229 m² g^-1. The obtained nanoceramics were employed for the mineralization of 10 ppm of ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CPF) as an emerging antibiotic waste in water under visible light irradiation. The CuO-incorporated LNTO exhibited the best photocatalytic oxidation of CPF after 120 min compared with other oxides with an excellent photoreaction rate of 0.0343 min^-1 which is 49 times higher than the pure LNTO. The 2.0 gL^-1 CuO/LNTO-dose achieved the full photooxidation of CPF at an oxidation speed of 0.0738 min ^-1 within just 1.0 h of visible light irradiation and magnificent regeneration ability. This enhanced activity of CuO/LNTO is regarded as significant light absorption and a bandgap energy reduction to 2.12 eV. Besides that, the heterojunction between CuO and LNTO amended the photogenerated carrier mobility and separation as concluded from the photoluminescence and photocurrent exploration. This comparative work suggests the proper design of low bandgap oxide decoration of solution-based perovskite oxide photocatalysts for promoting the visible-light mineralization of antibiotics in water.

Scavenger-Supported Photocatalytic Evidence of an Extended Type I Electronic Structure of the TiO2@Fe2O3 Interface

Heterostructures of TiO₂@Fe₂O₃ with a specific electronic structure and morphology enable us to control the interfacial charge transport necessary for their efficient photocatalytic performance. In spite of the extensive research, there still remains a profound ambiguity as far as the band alignment at the interface of TiO₂@Fe₂O₃ is concerned. In this work, the extended type I heterojunction between anatase TiO₂ nanocrystals and α-Fe₂O₃ hematite nanograins is proposed. Experimental evidence supporting this conclusion is based on direct measurements such as optical spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and the results of indirect studies of photocatalytic decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB) with selected scavengers of various active species of OH^•, h^•, e^-, and ^•O₂^-. The presence of small 6-8 nm Fe₂O₃ crystallites at the surface of TiO₂ has been confirmed in HRTEM images. Irregular 15-50 nm needle-like hematite grains could be observed in scanning electron micrographs. Substitutional incorporation of Fe³⁺ ions into the TiO₂ crystal lattice is predicted by a 0.16% decrease in lattice parameter a and a 0.08% change of c, as well as by a shift of the Raman E_g(1) peak from 143 cm^-1 in pure TiO₂ to 149 cm^-1 in Fe₂O₃-modified TiO₂. Analysis of O 1s XPS spectra corroborates this conclusion, indicating the formation of oxygen vacancies at the surface of titanium(IV) oxide. The presence of the Fe³⁺ impurity level in the forbidden band gap of TiO₂ is revealed by the 2.80 eV optical transition. The size effect is responsible for the absorption feature appearing at 2.48 eV. Increased photocatalytic activity within the visible range suggests that the electron transfer involves high energy levels of Fe₂O₃. Well-programed experiments with scavengers allow us to eliminate the less probable mechanisms of RhB photodecomposition and propose a band diagram of the TiO₂@Fe₂O₃ heterojunction.

Facile synthesis of low toxicity iron oxide/TiO2 nanocomposites with hyperthermic and photo-oxidation properties

The present study aimed to assess the feasibility of developing low-cost multipurpose iron oxide/TiO2 nanocomposites (NCs) for use in combined antitumor therapies and water treatment applications. Larger size (≈ 100 nm) iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) formed magnetic core-TiO2 shell structures at high Fe/Ti ratios and solid dispersions of IONPs embedded in TiO2 matrices when the Fe/Ti ratio was low. When the size of the iron phase was comparable to the size of the crystallized TiO2 nanoparticles (≈ 10 nm), the obtained nanocomposites consisted of randomly mixed aggregates of TiO2 and IONPs. The best inductive heating and ROS photogeneration properties were shown by the NCs synthesized at 400 °C which contained the minimum amount of α-Fe2O3 and sufficiently crystallized anatase TiO2. Their cytocompatibility was assessed on cultured human and murine fibroblast cells and analyzed in relation to the adsorption of bovine serum albumin from the culture medium onto their surface. The tested nanocomposites showed excellent cytocompatibility to human fibroblast cells. The results also indicated that the environment (i.e. phosphate buffer or culture medium) used to disperse the nanomaterials prior to performing the viability tests can have a significant impact on their cytotoxicity.

Electrochemiluminescent determination of CYFRA21-1 serum levels using Ti-Fe-O nanotubes immunoassay

Prominent electrochemiluminescence (ECL) in Ti-Fe-O nanotube arrays (Ti-Fe-O NTs) with K₂S₂O₈ as the cathode coreactant is reported for the first time. Compared with pure titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO₂ NTs), this heterojunction could effectively reduce the band gap, facilitate electronic transitions, and move the ECL potential to a positive direction. The ECL performance motivated the development of an ultrasensitive ECL immunosensor for detecting cytokeratin fragment 21-1 (CYFRA21-1). Magnetic beads loaded with conductive carbon black (CCB/MNTs) were used to efficiently quench the ECL signal of a Ti-Fe-O NTs electrode and were combined with an ECL immunoassay to realize sensitive detection of CYFRA21-1. Over a CYFRA21-1 concentration range of 1.0 pg·mL^-1 ~ 100 ng·mL^-1, the change in the ECL signal was highly linear with the logarithm of the CYFRA21-1 concentration, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.114 pg·mL^-1. This ECL immunosensor was used to successfully determine the CYFRA21-1 content in serum. The recovery of CYFRA21-1 in actual serum was 88.6 - 104.4%, and the RSD was 1.4 - 3.0%. The coreaction solution used in this work was PBS (0.1 M, pH = 7.4) containing 0.05 M K₂S₂O₈, the scanning range was -1.0 - 0 V, the photomultiplier tube (PMT) was set to 750 V, and the scanning rate was 100 mV·s^-1.

Exploring the impact of calcination parameters on the crystal structure, morphology, and optical properties of electrospun Fe2TiO5 nanofibers

Nanostructured Fe₂TiO₅ (pseudobrookite), a mixed metal oxide material holds significant promise for utilization in energy and environmental applications. However, its full application is still hindered due to the difficulty to synthesize monophasic Fe₂TiO₅ with high crystallinity and a large specific surface area. Herein, Fe₂TiO₅ nanofibers were synthesized via a versatile and low-cost electrospinning method, followed by a calcination process at different temperatures. We found a significant effect of the calcination process and its duration on the crystalline phase in the form of either pseudobrookite or pseudobrookite–hematite–rutile and the morphology of calcined nanofibers. The crystallite size increased whereas the specific surface area decreased with an increase in calcination temperature. At higher temperatures, the growth of Fe₂TiO₅ nanoparticles and simultaneous coalescence of small particles was noted. The highest specific surface area was obtained for the sample calcined at 500 °C for 6 h (S_BET = 64.4 m² g⁻¹). This work opens new opportunities in the synthesis of Fe₂TiO₅ nanostructures using the electrospinning method and a subsequent optimized calcination process for energy-related applications.

Synthesis, Characterization and Photoelectric Properties of Fe2O3 Incorporated TiO2 Photocatalyst Nanocomposites

In the present work we report the sol-gel synthesis of pure TiO2 and (TiO2)1−x(Fe2O3)x nanocomposites with different Fe2O3 contents (x = 0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 for pure TiO2, Fe2O3 incorporated 0.1, 0.5, and pure Fe2O3 which are denoted as PT, 0.1F, 0.5F, and PF, respectively). The structural, morphological, optical, and surface texture of the prepared nanocomposites were characterized using various techniques. The structural studies confirm the strong influence of Fe2O3 contents on the crystallite sizes and dislocation values. The size of the crystallites was increased by the increase in Fe2O3 contents. The bandgap values elucidated from DRS analysis were decreased from 3.15 eV to 1.91 eV with increasing Fe2O3 contents. The N2-Physorption analysis has confirmed the mesoporous nature of the samples with a comparable specific surface area of 35 m2/g. The photoelectrochemical measurements (CV, CA and EIS) were performed to assess the photoelectric properties of the prepared materials. It was found that the PT samples have the highest catalytic activity and photocurrent response compared to other composites. The reduction in current density was as follows: 2.8, 1.65, 1.5 and 0.9 mA/cm2, while the photocurrent response was ca. 800, 450, 45, 35 µA/cm2 for PT, 0.1F, 0.5F and PF samples, respectively. The EIS results showed that the (TiO2)1−x(Fe2O3)x nanocomposites exhibit lower charge transfer resistance than pure titania and hematite samples.

Onion-Ring-like Carbon and Nitrogen from ZIF-8 on TiO2/Fe2O3 Nanostructure for Overall Electrochemical Water Splitting

The carbon and nitrogen derived from ZIF-8 embedded in TiO₂/Fe₂O₃ (i.e., C,N-ZIF/TiFe) nanostructures exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance toward oxygen evolution reactions (OER), hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), and overall H₂O splitting. The results showed that the C,N-ZIF/TiFe nanostructure was the best catalyst in comparison to ZIF/TiFe and TiFe nanostructures toward HER and OER. These results revealed that combining the highly active carbon and nitrogen from ZIF-8 with a TiO₂/Fe₂O₃ semiconductor enriched the overall H₂O splitting. A possible OER mechanism is attributed to some groups that support the surface active site of the catalyst and adsorbent intermediate species. Finally, this inexpensive electrocatalyst was synthesized without noble metals and showed superior electrocatalytic activity and great stability with the potential to achieve ground-breaking and novel applications in fuel cells.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of FeOOH and Fe2O3 Modified Self-Organizing Immobilized TiO2 Nanotubes for Photocatalytic Degradation of 1H-Benzotriazole

In this study, titanium dioxide nanotubes were prepared by electrochemical anodization technique and modified with an aqueous solution of FeCl3 using hydrothermal synthesis method to control the amount and distribution of iron compounds on the anatase TiO2 nanotubes. The objective was to synthesize immobilized FeOOH@TiO2 or Fe2O3@TiO2 photocatalysts designed for the flow-through reactor systems; to investigate thermal treatment effect on the photocatalytic efficiency; to determine appropriate Fe-compounds concentration for the maximum photocatalytic activity improvement, and to explain the mechanism responsible for the enhancement. The photocatalysts were tested for the degradation of 1H-benzotriazole in water under UV/solar light irradiation. Up to two times increase in the photocatalytic activity was obtained when TiO2 nanotubes were modified with 0.8 mM Fe. At higher Fe concentrations (8 mM and 80 mM), the photocatalytic activity of the given photocatalysts decreased. To confirm the formation of FeOOH or Fe2O3 species, and to clarify the mechanism of photoactivity, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and UV-Vis spectroscopy were used.

Removal of emerging pollutants in aqueous phase by heterogeneous Fenton and photo-Fenton with Fe2O3-TiO2-clay heterostructures

Fe₂O₃-TiO₂-clay heterostructures have been prepared using an organo-bentonite as support, which organophilic character favored the fixation of TiO₂. Furthermore, Fe₂O₃ was successfully anchored by wet impregnation. The resulting materials are characterized by a disordered layered structure and a mesoporous texture. The heterostructures were employed as catalysts for the removal of two pharmaceuticals, acetaminophen (ACE) and antipyrine (ANT), by heterogeneous Fenton and photo-Fenton processes. ACE removal under different operation conditions was studied in detail to establish structure-performance relationships, being the TiO₂ formation and the developed texture the main factors controlling the activity. ANT showed a higher refractory behavior in oxidation by Fenton. Among the technologies studied, heterogeneous photo-Fenton achieved the best catalytic performance and higher kinetic rate and mineralization degree. Iron leaching was very low, lower than 5% of the initial iron load in all cases. This work demonstrates the potential application of these heterostructures for the removal of emerging pollutants of different nature.
