Nanoengineered 3D-printing scaffolds prepared by metal-coordination self-assembly for hyperthermia-catalytic osteosarcoma therapy and bone regeneration

The integration of functional nanomaterials with tissue engineering scaffolds has emerged as a promising solution for simultaneously treating malignant bone tumors and repairing resected bone defects. However, achieving a uniform bioactive interface on 3D-printing polymer scaffolds with minimized microstructural heterogeneity remains a challenge. In this study, we report a facile metal-coordination self-assembly strategy for the surface engineering of 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds with nanostructured two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs) consisting of Cu ions and 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP). A tunable thickness of Cu-HHTP cMOF on PCL scaffolds was achieved via the alternative deposition of metal ions and HHTP. The resulting composite PCL@Cu-HHTP scaffolds not only demonstrated potent photothermal conversion capability for efficient OS ablation but also promoted the bone repair process by virtue of their cell-friendly hydrophilic interfaces. Therefore, the cMOF-engineered dual-functional 3D-printing scaffolds show promising potential for treating bone tumors by offering sequential anti-tumor effects and bone regeneration capabilities. This work also presents a new avenue for the interface engineering of bioactive scaffolds to meet multifaceted demands in osteosarcoma-related bone defects.

Green and sustainable smart wooden system integrated with cellulose nanowhiskers-supported polyvinyl alcohol and anthocyanin biomolecules to monitor food freshness

Smart packaging materials have been used to protect human health from environmental hazards by sending real-time colorimetric signals for changes in the food packaging environment. However, the colorimetric material sensors use synthetic sensor dyes, which are toxic, expensive, non-biodegradable, and difficult to prepare. Herein, a simple strategy is presented for the development of an environmentally-friendly halochromic wood able to change color upon exposure to spoilage of food. A combination of anthocyanin (Ac)/aluminum (Al) mordant (Ac/Al) nanoparticles and cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW)-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was infiltrated into a delignified wood to produce a translucent wood with halochromic properties. CNW were employed as reinforcement agent to improve the mechanical performance of PVA. Additionally, CNW function as a dispersing agent to prevent agglomeration of Ac/Al nanoparticles. The diameters of CNW are in the range of 12-19 nm, whereas Ac/Al particles showed diameters of 9-22 nm. The smart wood changed color from purplish to colorless when exposed to food spoilage. A hypsochromic change from 539 nm to 370 nm was shown by the anthocyanin receptor when the spoilage level of food increased. This could be attributed to the pH-driven molecular switching of anthocyanin, leading to charge delocalization.

Recent advances and trends in innovative biosensor-based devices for heavy metal ion detection in food

Low-cost, reliable, and efficient biosensors are crucial in detecting residual heavy metal ions (HMIs) in food products. At present, based on distance-induced localized surface plasmon resonance of noble metal nanoparticles, enzyme-mimetic reaction of nanozymes, and chelation reaction of metal chelators, the constructed optical sensors have attracted wide attention in HMIs detection. Besides, based on the enrichment and signal amplification strategy of nanomaterials on HMIs and the construction of electrochemical aptamer sensing platforms, the developed electrochemical biosensors have overcome the plague of low sensitivity, poor selectivity, and the inability of multiplexed detection in the optical strategy. Moreover, along with an in-depth discussion of these different types of biosensors, a detailed overview of the design and application of innovative devices based on these sensing principles was provided, including microfluidic systems, hydrogel-based platforms, and test strip technologies. Finally, the challenges that hinder commercial application have also been mentioned. Overall, this review aims to establish a theoretical foundation for developing accurate and reliable sensing technologies and devices for HMIs, thereby promoting the widespread application of biosensors in the detection of HMIs in food.

Biocompatible Folic-Acid-Strengthened Ag-Ir Quantum Dot Nanozyme for Cell and Plant Root Imaging of Cysteine/Stress and Multichannel Monitoring of Hg2+ and Dopamine

To boost the enzyme-like activity, biological compatibility, and antiaggregation effect of noble-metal-based nanozymes, folic-acid-strengthened Ag-Ir quantum dots (FA@Ag-Ir QDs) were developed. Not only did FA@Ag-Ir QDs exhibit excellent synergistic-enhancement peroxidase-like activity, high stability, and low toxicity, but they could also promote the lateral root propagation of Arabidopsis thaliana. Especially, ultratrace cysteine or Hg2+ could exclusively strengthen or deteriorate the inherent fluorescence property with an obvious "turn-on" or "turn-off" effect, and dopamine could alter the peroxidase-like activity with a clear hypochromic effect from blue to colorless. Under optimized conditions, FA@Ag-Ir QDs were successfully applied for the turn-on fluorescence imaging of cysteine or the stress response in cells and plant roots, the turn-off fluorescence monitoring of toxic Hg2+, or the visual detection of dopamine in aqueous, beverage, serum, or medical samples with low detection limits and satisfactory recoveries. The selective recognition mechanisms for FA@Ag-Ir QDs toward cysteine, Hg2+, and dopamine were illustrated. This work will offer insights into constructing some efficient nanozyme sensors for multichannel environmental analyses, especially for the prediagnosis of cysteine-related diseases or stress responses in organisms.

All-in-One Zinc-Doped Prussian Blue Nanozyme for Efficient Capture, Separation, and Detection of Copper Ion (Cu2+ ) in Complicated Matrixes

Copper is a vital micronutrient for lives and an important ingredient for bactericides and fungicides. Given its indispensable biological and agricultural roles, there is an urgent need to develop simple, affordable, and reliable methods for detecting copper in complicated matrixes, particularly in underdeveloped regions where costly standardized instruments and sample dilution procedures hinder progress. The findings that zinc-doped Prussian blue nanoparticle (ZnPB NP) exhibits exceptional efficiency in capturing and isolating copper ions, and accelerates the generation of dissolved oxygen in a solution of H2 O2 with remarkable sensitivity and selectivity, the signal of which displays a positive correlation with the copper level due to the copper-enhanced catalase-like activity of ZnPB NP, are presented. Consequently, the ZnPB NP serves as an all-in-one sensor for copper ion. The credibility of the method for copper assays in human urine and farmland soil is shown by comparing it to the standard instrumentation, yielding a coefficient of correlation (R2 = 0.9890), but the cost is dramatically reduced. This ZnPB nanozyme represents a first-generation probe for copper ion in complicated matrixes, laying the groundwork for the future development of a practical copper sensor that can be applied in resource-constrained environments.

Spindle-shaped Cu-Ru mesoporous nanospheres with enhanced enzyme-like activity for visual differentiation of toxic o-/m-aminophenol and recognition mechanisms

To effectively differentiate toxic aminophenol isomers, a kind of spindle-shaped Cu-Ru bimetal mesoporous nanozyme (Cu-Ru MPNZ) with high specific surface was developed by one-pot homogeneous reduction method, directed by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in this work. By virtue of the distinctive microstructure, Cu-Ru MPNZ expressed superior bi-functional oxidase- and peroxidase-mimic activity to catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5,'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid) ammonium salt (ABTS) with low Michaelis-Menten constants and quick reaction rates. Especially, toxic aminophenol isomers could exclusively react with the oxydates of TMB or ABTS to express differentiable signals in color. Under the optimal conditions, Cu-Ru MPNZ was successfully applied for visual differentiation of toxic aminophenol isomers in real aqueous, juices and medicinal samples with low detection limits (1.60 × 10-8 mol/L for o-aminophenol and 3.25 × 10-8 mol/L for m-aminophenol) and satisfactory recoveries (96.6-103.5%). The different recognition mechanisms of Cu-Ru MPNZ to toxic o- and m-aminophenol isomers were proposed for the first time as far as we known. This work will provide a potential way to monitor different organic isomer pollution in future.

Multi-engineered Graphene Extended-Gate Field-Effect Transistor for Peroxynitrite Sensing in Alzheimer's Disease

The expression of β-amyloid peptides (Aβ), a pathological indicator of Alzheimer's disease (AD), was reported to be inapparent in the early stage of AD. While peroxynitrite (ONOO-) is produced excessively and emerges earlier than Aβ plaques in the progression of AD, it is thus significant to sensitively detect ONOO- for early diagnosis of AD and its pathological research. Herein, we unveiled an integrated sensor for monitoring ONOO-, which consisted of a commercially available field-effect transistor (FET) and a high-performance multi-engineered graphene extended-gate (EG) electrode. In the configuration of the presented EG electrode, laser-induced graphene (LIG) intercalated with MnO2 nanoparticles (MnO2/LIG) can improve the electrical properties of LIG and the sensitivity of the sensor, and graphene oxide (GO)-MnO2/Hemin nanozyme with ONOO- isomerase activity can selectively trigger the isomerization of ONOO- to NO3-. With this synergistic effect, our EG-FET sensor can respond to the ONOO- with high sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, taking advantage of our EG-FET sensor, we modularly assembled a portable sensing platform for wireless tracking ONOO- levels in the brain tissue of AD transgenic mice at earlier stages before massive Aβ plaques appeared, and we systematically explored the complex role of ONOO- in the occurrence and development of AD.

Three-in-one covalent organic framework nanozyme: Self-reporting, self-correcting and light-responsive for fluorescence sensing 3-nitrotyrosine

Most current redox-type nanozyme-based colorimetric sensing platforms are susceptible to interference from the reductant when using chromogenic probe, and the unstable H2O2 used in the peroxidase-like nanozyme-based systems is prone to difficulty in sensing signal reproducibility, while peroxidase-like nanozyme with oxidase-mimicking activity is easy to bring background interference by O2. Since the strong structural designability of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) endows them great application value in the sensing fields, therefore, we envision the construction a COF oxidase-like nanozyme-based controllable sensing system that integrates self-reporting, self-correcting and light-responsive functions to avoid these affects. Herein, 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) biomarker was selected as model analyte. 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 3,6-diaminoacridine (DA) were acted as building monomers of the multifunctional COF nanozyme (termed as TpDA). Owing to the excellent light-responsive oxidase-mimicking property of TpDA, 3-NT can be efficiently oxidized, the inner filter effect (IFE) between TpDA and the 3-NT oxidation product greatly quenches the intrinsic fluorescence of TpDA, making it a controllable self-reporting system for fluorescence turn-off sensing 3-NT. Additionally, the excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) that generated continuously during photocatalysis can resist the interference of endogenous reductants. This study not only provides new insights to avoid the interference of H2O2, background and reductants from conventional redox-type nanozyme-based colorimetric systems but also opens avenues to rational construct versatile COF nanozyme-based sensor.

Immunochromatographic enhancement strategy for SARS-CoV-2 detection based on nanotechnology

The global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been catastrophic to both human health and social development. Therefore, developing highly reliable and sensitive point-of-care testing (POCT) for detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a priority. Among all available POCTs, the lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA, also known as immunochromatography) has proved to be effective due to its accuracy, portability, convenience, and speed. In areas with a scarcity of laboratory resources and medical personnel, the LFIA provides an affordable option for the diagnosis of COVID-19. This review offers a comprehensive overview of methods for improving the sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2 detection using immunochromatography based on nanotechnology, sorted according to the different detection targets (antigens, antibodies, and nucleic acids). It also looks into the performance and properties of the various sensitivity enhancement strategies, before delving into the remaining challenges in COVID-19 diagnosis through LFIA. Ultimately, it seeks to provide helpful guidance in selecting an appropriate strategy for SARS-CoV-2 immunochromatographic detection based on nanotechnology.

Sensitive and Direct Analysis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa through Self-Primer-Assisted Chain Extension and CRISPR-Cas12a-Based Color Reaction

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is a common opportunistic Gram-negative pathogen that may cause infections to immunocompromised patients. However, sensitive and reliable analysis of P. aeruginosa remains a huge challenge. In this method, target recognition assists the formation of a self-primer and initiates single-stranded chain production. The produced single-stranded DNA chain is identified by CRISPR-Cas12a, and consequently, the trans-cleavage activity of the Cas12a enzyme is activated to parallelly digest Ag+ aptamer sequences that are chelated with silver ions (Ag+). The released Ag+ reacted with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) for coloring. Compared with the traditional color developing strategies, which mainly rely on the DNA hybridization, the color developing strategy in this approach exhibits a higher efficiency due to the robust trans-cleavage activity of the Cas12a enzyme. Consequently, the method shows a low limit of detection of a wide detection of 5 orders of magnitudes and a low limit of detection of 21 cfu/mL, holding a promising prospect in early diagnosis of infections. Herein, we develop a sensitive and reliable method for direct and colorimetric detection of P. aeruginosa by integrating self-primer-assisted chain production and CRISPR-Cas12a-based color reaction and believe that the established approach will facilitate the development of bacteria-analyzing sensors.

Coordination-Driven One-Step Rapid Self-Assembly Synthesis of Dual-Functional Ag@Pt Nanozyme

Realizing high-precise and adjustable regulation of engineering nanozyme is important in nanotechnology. Here, Ag@Pt nanozymes with excellent peroxidase-like and antibacterial effects are designed and synthesized by nucleic acid and metal ions coordination-driven one-step rapid self-assembly. The adjustable NA-Ag@Pt nanozyme is synthesized within 4 min using single-stranded nucleic acid as templates, and peroxidase-like enhancing FNA-Ag@Pt nanozyme is received by regulating functional nucleic acids (FNA) based on NA-Ag@Pt nanozyme. Both Ag@Pt nanozymes that are developed not only has simple and general synthesis approaches, but also can produce artificial precise adjustment and possess dual-functional. Moreover, when lead ion-specific aptamers as FNA are introduced to NA-Ag@Pt nanozyme, the Pb2+ aptasensor is successfully constructed by increasing electron conversion efficiency and improving the specificity of nanozyme. In addition, both nanozyme has good antibacterial properties, with ~100% and ~85% antibacterial efficiency against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. This work provides a synthesis method of novelty dual-functional Ag@Pt nanozymes and successful application in metal ions detection and antibacterial agents.

Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles/Mg-Al Layered Double Hydroxides with Peroxidase-like Activity for Mercury Detection and Antibacterial Activity

Over the past decade, the attention of researchers has been drawn to materials with enzyme-like properties to substitute natural enzymes. The ability of nanomaterials to mimic enzymes makes them excellent enzyme mimics; nevertheless, there is a wide berth for improving their activity and providing a platform to heighten their potential. Herein, we report a green and facile route for Tectona grandis leaves extract-assisted synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) decorated on Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (Mg-Al-OH@TGLE-AgNPs) as a nanocatalyst. The Mg-Al-OH@TGLE-AgNPs nanocatalyst was well characterized, and the average crystallite size of the Ag NPs was found to be 7.92 nm. The peroxidase-like activity in the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine in the presence of H2O2 was found to be an intrinsic property of the Mg-Al-OH@TGLE-AgNPs nanocatalyst. In addition, the use of the Mg-Al-OH@TGLE-AgNPs nanocatalyst was extended towards the quantification of Hg2+ ions which showed a wide linearity in the concentration range of 80-400 μM with a limit of detection of 0.2 nM. Additionally, the synergistic medicinal property of Ag NPs and the phytochemicals present in the Tectona grandis leaves extract demonstrated notable antibacterial activity for the Mg-Al-OH@TGLE-AgNPs nanocatalyst against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Bacillus cereus.

User-friendly and ultra-stable all-inclusive gold tablets for cysteamine detection

To date, a range of nanozymes has been reported for their enzyme-mimicking catalytic activity such as solution-based sensors. However, in remote areas, the need for portable, cost-effective, and one-pot prepared sensors is obvious. In this study, we report the development of a highly stable and sensitive gold tablet-based sensor for cysteamine quantification in human serum samples. The sensor is produced in two steps: synthesis of a pullulan-stabilized gold nanoparticle solution (pAuNP-Solution) using a pullulan polymer as a reducing, stabilizing, and encapsulating agent and then, casting the pAuNP-Solution into a pullulan gold nanoparticle tablet (pAuNP-Tablet) by a pipetting method. The tablet was characterized by UV-vis, DLS, FTIR, TEM, and AFM analyses. The pAuNP-tablet exhibited a high peroxidase-mimetic activity via a TMB-H₂O₂ system. The presence of cysteamine in the system introduced two types of inhibition which were dependent on the cysteamine concentration. By determining Michaelis-Menten's kinetic parameters, we gained mechanistic insights into the catalytic inhibition process. Based on the catalytic inhibition capability of cysteamine, the limit of detection (LoD) was calculated to be 69.04 and 82.9 μM in buffer and human serum samples, respectively. Finally, real human serum samples were tested, demonstrating the applicability of the pAuNP-Tablet for real-world applications. The % R values in human serum samples were in the range of 91-105% with % RSD less than 2% for all replicas. The stability tests over 16 months revealed the ultra-stable properties of the pAuNP-Tablet. Overall, with a simple fabrication method and a novel employed technique, this study contributes to the advancement of tablet-based sensors and helps in cysteamine detection in clinical settings.

Convenient colorimetric-fluorescent dual-mode recognition of I- in agricultural products and visual determination of Hg2+ in drinking beverages using Ag-Pt bimetal quantum dot nanozyme

Conveniently and efficiently monitoring I^- and Hg²⁺ in agricultural products or drinking beverages for the protection of human health is currently a great challenge. With this aim, a Ag-Pt bimetal quantum-dot nanozyme boosted by bioactive folic acid (FA@Ag-Pt QDs) was first developed for multichannel monitoring of I^- and Hg²⁺ in this work using a two-step liquid-phase reduction method. Not only did the present FA@Ag-Pt QDs possess superior peroxidase-like activity with Michaelis constant (K_m) and maximal reaction rate (V_max) of 0.01 mM/2.95 × 10^-8 M·s^-1 and 1.15 mM/3.88 × 10^-8 M·s^-1, respectively, trace Hg²⁺ or I^- could exclusively alter their enzyme-mimic performance with obvious color changes from blue to colorless or dark blue. I^- could also strengthen the inherent fluorescence property of FA@Ag-Pt QDs. When applied for visual monitoring of I^- and Hg²⁺ in real beverages or iodine-containing agricultural products, the detection recoveries were 93.9 %-105.3 % and 96.8-104.3 % with low detection limits of 6.56 × 10^-8 mol/L and 4.00 × 10^-10 mol/L (S/N = 3), respectively. The recovery and detection limit for fluorescent detection of I^- were 95.8 %-104.1 % and 1.75 × 10^-8 mol/L (S/N = 3), respectively. The mechanisms driving the improved peroxidase-like activity of FA@Ag-Pt QDs and their selective monitoring of Hg²⁺ and I^- were illustrated in detail. The proposed FA@Ag-Pt QDs will act as an efficient sensor for the practical multichannel monitoring of Hg²⁺ and I^-, with superior catalytic signal amplification.

Monoclonal Antibody-Based Colorimetric Lateral Flow Immunoassay for the Detection of Pyridaben in the Environment

Pyridaben, a broad-spectrum pyridazinone acaricide that is widely used in agricultural production, can induce neurotoxicity and reproductive abnormalities, and is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. In this study, a pyridaben hapten was synthesized and used to prepare monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), among which 6E3G8D7 showed the highest sensitivity in indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, with a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) of 3.49 ng mL^-1. The mAb, 6E3G8D7, was further applied to a gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric lateral flow immunoassay (CLFIA) for pyridaben detection, according to the signal intensity ratio of the test line to the control line, which showed a visual limit of detection of 5 ng mL^-1. The CLFIA also showed high specificity and achieved excellent accuracy in different matrices. In addition, the amounts of pyridaben in blind samples detected by the CLFIA, were consistent with high-performance liquid chromatography. Therefore, the developed CLFIA is considered a promising, reliable, and portable method for pyridaben on-site detection in agro-products and environmental samples.

Ag Aerogel-Supported Single-Atom Hg Nanozyme Enables Efficient SERS Monitoring of Enhanced Oxidase-Like Catalysis

In this work, three-dimensional (3D) Ag aerogel-supported Hg single-atom catalysts (SACs) were explored as an efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to monitor the enhanced oxidase-like reaction. The influence of the concentrations of Hg²⁺ to prepare 3D Hg/Ag aerogel networks on their SERS properties to monitor the oxidase-like reaction has been investigated, and a specific enhancement with an optimized addition of Hg²⁺ has been achieved. The formation of Ag-supported Hg SACs with the optimized Hg²⁺ addition was identified from a high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) image and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement at an atomic level. This is the first discovery of Hg SACs for enzyme-like reaction applications inferred by SERS techniques. And density functional theory (DFT) was used to further reveal the oxidase-like catalytic mechanism of Hg/Ag SACs. This study provides a mild synthetic strategy to fabricate Ag aerogel-supported Hg single atoms to display promising prospects in various catalytic fields.

Mesoporous carbon nanoenzyme as nano-booster for photothermal-enhanced photodynamic therapy compared with graphene oxide

The over-expressed GSH in tumor microenvironment significantly weakens the lethal reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) and catalysis of nanoenzyme. Hence, it is necessary to excavate a versatile and effective vehicle with oxidative stress-enhancement and GSH-depletion capacity to break the redox homeostasis in tumor microenvironment. GO has been reported to possess GSH-depletion and peroxidase (POD)-like capacity. Based on this, PEGylated mesoporous carbon (MC-PEG) was prepared as ICG vehicle to compare with PEGylated graphene oxide (GO-PEG). Excitingly, MC-PEG was found to exhibit three times higher oxidative capacity by POD-like process than GO-PEG, and owned more effective and continuous GSH-depletion capacity to further amplify the oxidative stress. Meanwhile, MC-PEG exhibited better protective effect on the loaded ICG against unwanted light excitation than GO-PEG. Together with the higher photothermal conversion effect, under the NIR light irradiation, MC-PEG could markedly improve the temperature of tumor cells and produce more hydroxyl radical, continuously consume GSH and provide more better protection for ICG compared with GO-PEG, thus further boosting the combination of photothermal and photodynamic effects. The anti-tumor experiment in cell and in-vivo level both validated that ICG/MC-PEG showed better synergistic effect with lower IC₅₀ value and higher tumor suppression rate than ICG/GO-PEG.

A Synergistic Dual-Channel Sensor for Ultrasensitive Detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by DNA Nanostructure and G-Quadruplex

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the foodborne pathogenic bacteria that greatly threatens human health. An ultrasensitive technology for P. aeruginosa detection is urgently demanded. Herein, based on the mechanism of aptamer-specific recognition, an electrochemical-colorimetric dual-mode ultrasensitive sensing strategy for P. aeruginosa is proposed. The vertices of DNA tetrahedral nanoprobes (DTNPs), that immobilized on the gold electrode were modified with P. aeruginosa aptamers. Furthermore, the G-quadruplex, which was conjugated with a P. aeruginosa aptamer, was synthesized via rolling circle amplification (RCA). Once P. aeruginosa is captured, a hemin/G-quadruplex, which possesses peroxidase-mimicking activity, will separate from the P. aeruginosa aptamer. Then, the exfoliated hemin/G-quadruplexes are collected for oxidation of the 3,3',5',5'-tetramethylbenzidine for colorimetric sensing. In the electrochemical mode, the hemin/G-quadruplex that is still bound to the aptamer catalyzes polyaniline (PANI) deposition and leads to a measurable electrochemical signal. The colorimetric and electrochemical channels demonstrated a good forward and reverse linear response for P. aeruginosa within the range of 1-10⁸ CFU mL^-1, respectively. Overall, compared with a traditional single-mode sensor for P. aeruginosa, the proposed dual-mode sensor featuring self-calibration not only avoids false positive results but also improves accuracy and sensitivity. Furthermore, the consistency of the electrochemical/colorimetric assay was verified in practical meat samples and showed great potential for applications in bioanalysis.

Novel Hydrazone Chromophore Sensor for Metallochromic Determination of Cadmium Ions

For the detection of Cd(II) in aquatic media, a novel dicyanomethylene dihydrofuran hydrazone(DCDHFH)-based colorimetric chemosensor was developed. DCDHFH was prepared by an azo-coupling process involving the diazonium chloride of 2, 4-dichloroaniline and a dicyanomethylene dihydrofuran heterocyclic moiety bearing an active methyl group. The DCDHFH chromophore showed strong solvatochromism depending on solvent polarity due to electronic delocalization. The pH sensory effects of the DCDHFH chromophore were also explored. DCDHFH could be used to identify Cd(II) in the presence of other competitive metals, as indicated by variations in color and absorbance spectra. In the presence of cadmium ions, the synthesized DCDHFH probe with hydrazone recognition moiety exhibited a significant sensitivity and selectivity to cadmium ions at the ppm concentration level (10–250 ppm). A DCDHFH-immobilized paper test strip was also prepared and effectively used for the detection of cadmium in aqueous media at various concentrations. According to CIE Lab’s criteria, colorimetric strength (K/S), and the UV–Vis absorbance spectra, the cadmium detection abilities of the DCDHFH-immobilized paper strips were evaluated. The optimal pH range for the determination of Cd(II) was monitored in the area of 5.5–6.3, with a fast chromogenic change from yellow to red relying on the Cd(II) concentration. The deposition of dicyanomethylene dihydrofuran hydrazone onto the paper strip’s surface was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Metal Cluster Triggered-Assembling Heterogeneous Au-Ag Nanoclusters with Highly Loading Performance and Biocompatible Capability

In this work, we firstly report the preparation of heterogeneously assembled structures Au-Ag nanoclusters (NCs) as good drug carriers with high loading performance and biocompatible capability. As glutathione-protected Au and Ag clusters self-assembled into porous Au-Ag NCs, the size value is about 1.358 (±0.05) nm. The morphology characterization revealed that the diameter of Au-Ag NCs is approximately 120 nm, as well as the corresponding potential ability in loading performance of the metal cluster triggered-assembling process. Compared with individual components, the stability and loading performance of heterogeneous Au-Ag NCs were improved and exhibit that the relative biocompatibility was enhanced. The exact information about this is that cell viability was approximately to 98% when cells were incubated with 100 µg mL−1 particle solution for 3 days. The drug release of Adriamycin from Au-Ag NCs was carried out in PBS at pH = 7.4 and 5.8, respectively. By simulating in vivo and tumor microenvironment, the release efficiency could reach over 65% at pH = 5.8 but less than 30% at pH = 7.2. Using an ultrasound field as external environment can accelerate the assembling process while metal clusters triggered assembling Au-Ag NCs. The size and morphology of the assembled Au-Ag NCs can be controlled by using different power parameters (8 W, 13 W, 18 W) under ambient atmosphere. Overall, a novel approach is exhibited, which conveys assembling work for metal clusters triggers into heterogeneous structures with porous characteristic. Its existing properties such as water-solubility, stability, low toxicity and capsulation can be considered as dependable agents in various biomedical applications and drug carriers in immunotherapies.

Optical Biosensor Based on Graphene and Its Derivatives for Detecting Biomolecules

Graphene and its derivatives show great potential for biosensing due to their extraordinary optical, electrical and physical properties. In particular, graphene and its derivatives have excellent optical properties such as broadband and tunable absorption, fluorescence bursts, and strong polarization-related effects. Optical biosensors based on graphene and its derivatives make nondestructive detection of biomolecules possible. The focus of this paper is to review the preparation of graphene and its derivatives, as well as recent advances in optical biosensors based on graphene and its derivatives. The working principle of face plasmon resonance (SPR), surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and colorimetric sensors are summarized, and the advantages and disadvantages of graphene and its derivatives applicable to various types of sensors are analyzed, and the methods of surface functionalization of graphene and its derivatives are introduced; these optical biosensors can be used for the detection of a range of biomolecules such as single cells, cellular secretions, proteins, nucleic acids, and antigen-antibodies; these new high-performance optical sensors are capable of detecting changes in surface structure and biomolecular interactions with the advantages of ultra-fast detection, high sensitivity, label-free, specific recognition, and the ability to respond in real-time. Problems in the current stage of application are discussed, as well as future prospects for graphene and its biosensors. Achieving the applicability, reusability and low cost of novel optical biosensors for a variety of complex environments and achieving scale-up production, which still faces serious challenges.

A portable smartphone-based detection of glyphosate based on inhibiting peroxidase-like activity of heptanoic acid/Prussian blue decorated Fe3O4 nanoparticles

The rapid and onsite detection of glyphosate in tobacco products is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel smartphone-assisted sensing platform for the detection of glyphosate has been successfully proposed through the peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4-based nanozyme. Heptanoic acid/Prussian blue (PB) decorated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@C7/PB) could catalyze and oxidize 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS, colorless) into a steel blue colored product in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Glyphosate could specifically inhibit the peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4@C7/PB by occupying the active site, thereby the glyphosate detection could be accomplished within 10 min by monitoring the color change of ABTS. This study has developed a smartphone-based portable detection platform for online analysis of glyphosate with a detection limit of 0.1 μg mL-1. The absorbance response curve of glyphosate showed good linearity in the concentration range of 0.125-15 μg mL-1 at 415, 647, and 730 nm. Moreover, by employing a co-precipitation technology and inhibiting the peroxidase-like activity, the glyphosate analysis would be less affected by the tobacco sample matrix. The nanosensor possesses excellent selectivity and anti-interference ability, which has application value in actual samples for onsite screening.

Peroxidase-like activity of bimetal Cu-Zn oxide mesoporous nanospheres for the determination of o-aminophenol

To enhance the peroxidase-like performance and its application in detection of toxic o-aminophenol (o-AP), a kind of bimetal Cu-Zn oxide-based mesoporous nanosphere (Cu_2/3Zn_1/3O PNPs) was constructed under microwave-radiation conditions. Its mesoporous microstructure and peroxidase-like catalytic activity were investigated in detail. The results showed that Cu_2/3Zn_1/3O PNPs possessed a high specific surface area of 34.89 m²g^-1 and a well-distributed mesoporous size of approximate 6.07 nm, which endowed the superior peroxidase-like performance. The material catalyzes the oxidization of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with K_m/V_max of 0.104 mM/3.79 × 10^-8 M·s^-1 in the presence of H₂O₂. Especially o-AP could exclusively deteriorate the characteristic UV-Vis absorbance intensity at 653 nm (A₆₅₃) of the Cu_2/3Zn_1/3O PNPs-TMB-H₂O₂ system with obvious color change from blue to colorless. Under the optimal conditions, the effect of some interfering substances was low and the limit of detection (LOD) for o-AP was 1.65 × 10^-8 mol/L (S/N = 3). When applied to the colorimetric detection of o-AP in practice, the recovery was between 96.1 and 107.2% with R.S.D. less than 2.04%. The mechanism of synergic-enhancement peroxidase-mimic activity of Cu_2/3Zn_1/3O PNPs and its exclusive colorimetric response to o-AP were proposed as well.

A colorimetric aptasensor based on gold nanoparticles for detection of microbial toxins: an alternative approach to conventional methods

Frequent contamination of foods with microbial toxins produced by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae represents an increasing public health problem that requires the development of quick and easy tools to detect them at trace levels. Recently, it has been found that colorimetric detection methods may replace traditional methods in the field because of their ease of use, quick response, ease of manufacture, low cost, and naked-eye visibility. Therefore, it is suitable for fieldwork, especially for work in remote areas of the world. However, the development of colorimetric detection methods with low detection limits is a challenge that limits their wide applicability in the detection of food contaminants. To address these challenges, nanomaterial-based transduction systems are used to construct colorimetric biosensors. For example, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) provide an excellent platform for the development of colorimetric biosensors because they offer the advantages of easy synthesis, biocompatibility, advanced surface functionality, and adjustable physicochemical properties. The selectivity of the colorimetric biosensor can be achieved by the combination of aptamers and gold nanoparticles, which provides an unprecedented opportunity to detect microbial toxins. Compared to antibodies, aptamers have significant advantages in the analysis of microbial toxins due to their smaller size, higher binding affinity, reproducible chemical synthesis and modification, stability, and specificity. Two colorimetric mechanisms for the detection of microbial toxins based on AuNPs have been described. First, sensors that use the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon of gold nanoparticles can exhibit very strong colors in the visible range because of changes caused by aggregation or disaggregation. Second, the detection mechanism of AuNPs is based on their enzyme mimetic properties and it is possible to construct a colorimetric biosensor based on the 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine/Hydrogen peroxide, TMB/H₂O₂ reaction to detect microbial toxins. Therefore, this review summarizes the recent applications of AuNP-based colorimetric aptasensors for detecting microbial toxins, including bacterial toxins, fungal toxins, and algal toxins focusing on selectivity, sensitivity, and practicality. Finally, the most important current challenges in this field and future research opportunities are discussed.

Ag nanozyme strengthened by folic acid: Superior peroxidase-mimicking activity and application for visual monitoring of dopamine

Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter; however, any excess or deficiency of DA will cause several diseases in humans. To monitor DA efficiently and conveniently, a Ag nanozyme strengthened by bioactive folic acid (FA@AgNPs) was developed by homogeneous redox assembly. After the microstructure and performance were characterized in detail, it was noted that the proposed FA@AgNPs possessed superior peroxidase-like activity due to the ultra-small Ag nanoparticles and multiple amino, hydroxyl, and aromatic rings in FA. FA@AgNPs accelerated the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with a low Michaelis constant (K_m) and high maximal reaction rate (V_max). Importantly, the characteristic absorbance intensity of FA@AgNPs-TMB-H₂O₂ at 652 nm (A₆₅₂) was exclusively deteriorated in the presence of trace DA, accompanied by a visual color change from blue to colorless. Under the optimized conditions (pH 4.0, 300 μL 1.5 mM TMB, 300 μL 1.0 M H₂O₂ and incubated for 30 min at room temperature), there expressed an excellent linear relationship between lgA₀/A₆₅₂ and c_DA from 1.0 ×10^-8 to 6.67×10^-6 mol/L with a low limit detection of 7.1×10^-10 mol/L (S/N=3). When applied for monitoring of DA in real fruit juice and pharmaceutical samples, the recovery was between 96.6% and 104.9%, with RSD less than 2.2%. The enhanced peroxidase-like activity of the FA@AgNP system and its selective recognition mechanism for DA are also proposed.

In-situ generation of highly active and four-in-one CoFe2O4/H2PPOP nanozyme: Mechanism and its application for fast colorimetric detection of Cr (VI)

Nanozymes have been widely utilized in colorimetric sensors and developing nanomaterials with multienzyme functions have more application prospects due to their cascaded catalytic efficiency. Here, a unique organic-inorganic nanocomposite CoFe₂O₄/H₂PPOP was synthesized by depositing CoFe₂O₄ nanocubes on a fully conjugated porphyrin-based porous organic polymer (H₂PPOP) in situ. CoFe₂O₄/H₂PPOP revealed outstanding tetra-enzyme-like activities, namely oxidase-like, peroxidase-like, catalase-like and superoxide dismutase-like activities. Compared with pure CoFe₂O₄ nanocubes, the catalytic activities of CoFe₂O₄/H₂PPOP were significantly boosted because of the large surface area and extended conjugated structure of H₂PPOP, abundant active substances (CoFe₂O₄) on the surface and the effective electronic transfer between CoFe₂O₄ and H₂PPOP. Based on the oxidase-like activity of CoFe₂O₄/H₂PPOP, a colorimetric platform was constructed for Cr (VI) with a wide linear range (0.6-100 μM) and a low detection limit (26 nΜ). Further utilizing the double oxidase-like and peroxidase-like activities, a more sensitive colorimetric platform with a faster detection speed for Cr (VI) was realized with the LOD as low as 2 nΜ. This work opens up a new way to prepare multi-enzyme active nanozyme and excavates its potential for detecting environmental pollutants.

A Comprehensive Review on Water Quality Monitoring Devices: Materials Advances, Current Status, and Future Perspective

Water quality monitoring has become more critical in recent years to ensure the availability of clean and safe water from natural aquifers and to understand the evolution of water contaminants across time and space. The conventional water monitoring techniques comprise of sample collection, preservation, preparation, tailed by laboratory testing and analysis with cumbersome wet chemical routes and expensive instrumentation. Despite the high accuracy of these methods, the high testing costs, laborious procedures, and maintenance associated with them don't make them lucrative for end end-users and field testing. As the participation of ultimate stakeholders, that is, common man for water quality and quantity can play a pivotal role in ensuring the sustainability of our aquifers, thus it is essential to develop and deploy portable and user-friendly technical systems for monitoring water sources in real-time or on-site. The present review emphasizes here on possible approaches including optical (absorbance, fluorescence, colorimetric, X-ray fluorescence, chemiluminescence), electrochemical (ASV, CSV, CV, EIS, and chronoamperometry), electrical, biological, and surface-sensing (SPR and SERS), as candidates for developing such platforms. The existing developments, their success, and bottlenecks are discussed in terms of various attributes of water to escalate the essentiality of water quality devices development meeting ASSURED criterion for societal usage. These platforms are also analyzed in terms of their market potential, advancements required from material science aspects, and possible integration with IoT solutions in alignment with Industry 4.0 for environmental application.

Tannic Acid-Capped Gold Nanoparticles as a Novel Nanozyme for Colorimetric Determination of Pb2+ Ions

In this study, tannic acid-modified gold nanoparticles were found to have superior nanozyme activity and catalyze the oxidation reaction of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Enhancing the catalytic activity of the nanozyme by Pb2+ ions caused by selectively binding metal ions by the tannic acid-capped surface of gold nanoparticles makes them an ideal colorimetric probe for Pb2+. The parameters of the reaction, including pH, incubation time, and concentration of components, were optimized to reach maximal sensitivity of Pb2+ detection. The absorption change is directly proportional to the Pb2+ concentration and allows the determination of Pb2+ ions within 10 min. The colorimetric sensor is characterized by a wide linear range from 25 to 500 ng×mL−1 with a low limit of detection of 11.3 ng×mL−1. The highly sensitive and selective Pb2+ detection in tap, drinking, and spring water revealed the feasibility and applicability of the developed colorimetric sensor.

Introducing hierarchical hollow MnO2 microspheres as nanozymes for colorimetric determination of captopril

A simple sensor was developed for the colorimetric determination of captopril (CPT). Herein, hierarchical hollow MnO₂ microspheres (HH-MnO₂) were applied as nanozymes with peroxidase-mimetic activity. Free cation radicals with a strong absorption signal (λ_max at 653 nm) were generated via a redox reaction between 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and HH-MnO₂. Captopril could successfully prevent the generation of blue-colored free cation radicals. The influence of CPT concentration on the absorption of the generated radicals was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The corresponding linear concentration range was from 1.0 to 30.0 μg mL^-1 (4.6-138.1 μmol L^-1), and the detection limit was found to be 0.26 μg mL^-1 (1.2 μmol L^-1). As a practical usage, the developed sensor was effectively utilized to measure the content of CPT in pharmaceutical formulations.

Porous Co3O4 nanodisks as robust peroxidase mimetics in an ultrasensitive colorimetric sensor for the rapid detection of multiple heavy metal residues in environmental water samples

The current method for rapid and ultrasensitive detection of multiple heavy metals in environmental water still face challenge. Herein, the porous Co₃O₄ nanodisks with robust peroxidase-mimicking activity were prepared, and its catalytic activity can be significantly inhibited by the heavy metals like Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II) and As, which makes us to establish an ultrasensitive and rapid colorimetric sensor for the detection of multiple heavy metals. Further investigation reveals the anticompetitive inhibition effect of heavy metals on peroxidase-mimicking activity. The colorimetric sensor displays excellent sensitivity and selectivity, and the limits of detection (LOD) for Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II) and As are 0.085 μg·L^-1, 0.19 μg·L^-1, 0.2 μg·L^-1 and 0.156 μg·L^-1, respectively. Notably, the absorbance variation will be greater than 0.5 as the concentration of heavy metals exceeds 5 μg·L^-1, which can be clearly discriminated by the naked eyes. Moreover, the average recovery range of heavy metals in actual water samples is from 86.9% to 98.3%. The above results indicate that the proposed sensor exhibits excellent practical applicability for the rapid and ultrasensitive detection of multiple harmful heavy metals in several environmental water samples, which has potential bright application in protecting the environment and human health.

2D Co3O4 stabilizing Rh nano composites developed for visual sensing bioactive urea and toxic p-aminophenol in practice by synergetic-reinforcing oxidase activity

To enlarge the perspective of nanozyme, 2-dimensional Co₃O₄ stabilizing Rh nano composite (2D Co₃O₄@Rh NC) was identified and developed first by one-pot surfactant-aided oxido-reduction. By virtue of the synergetic-reinforcing oxidase activity between 2D Co₃O₄ substrate and Rh nano particles, the obtained 2D Co₃O₄@Rh NC could catalyze the oxidation of chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5,'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxTMB with quite a low Michaelis-Menten constant (K_m) of 0.018 mM and a quick v_max of 6.45 × 10^-8 M s^-1, expressing superior oxidase-like catalysis with a wide temperature range from 20 to 60 °C. Importantly, either bioactive urea or toxic p-aminophenol (p-Ap) could exclusively alter the existed state of oxTMB with differentiable color changes. Under the optimized conditions, 2D Co₃O₄@Rh NC was successfully applied for ratiometric colorimetric sensing urea and p-Ap in environmental water, soil and urine samples with low detection limits (1.1 μM for urea and 0.68 μM for p-Ap) and satisfactory recoveries (96.0-105.8%). The synergetic enhanced oxidase-like activity of 2D Co₃O₄@Rh NC and the different reaction mechanisms of the 2D Co₃O₄@Rh NC-TMB system to urea and p-Ap were investigated. Not only does the work provide an efficient way for sensing organic pollution of p-Ap, it will offer an efficient potential for diagnosing urea-related diseases on clinical medical testing in future.

One-dimensional nitrogen doped porous carbon nano-array arranged by carbon nanotubes for electrochemical sensing ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid simultaneously

In this work, one-dimensional nitrogen doped porous carbon nano-arrays arranged by carbon nanotube (1D CNTs@NPC) were first constructed, using a coating technology at room temperature and followed by high temperature carbonization. It was expected that the resulting glassy carbon electrodes modified by 1D CNTs@NPC (CNTs@NPC/GCE) could express different electrochemical responses to ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA), by virtue of the synergistic-improved effect between CNTs and NPC. Under the optimized conditions, there were excellent analytical parameters for CNTs@NPC/GCE to detect AA, DA and UA, i.e. a wide linear range of 40-2100μM for AA, 0.5-49μM for DA and 3-50μM for AA with low detection limits of 0.36μM, 0.02μmol l^-1and 0.57μM respectively. Importantly, the proposed CNTs@NPC/GCE was efficiently applied to determine AA, DA and UA in some real samples with high stability, reproducibility and selectivity. This work will offer an efficient potential for diagnosing ascorbic acid, dopamine or uric acid-related diseases on clinical testing in future.

Applications of DNA-nanozyme-based sensors

Since the discovery of the enzyme-like activities of nanomaterials, the study of nanozymes has become one of the most popular research frontiers of diverse areas including biosensors. DNA also plays a very important role in the construction of biosensors. Thus, the idea of combined applications of nanozymes with DNA (DNA-nanozyme) is very attractive for the development of nanozyme-based biosensors, which has attracted considerable interest of researchers. To date, many sensors based on DNA-functionalized or templated nanozymes have been reported for the detection of various targets and highly accelerated the development of nanozyme-based sensors. In this review, we summarize the main applications and advances of DNA-nanozyme-based sensors. Additionally, perspectives and challenges are also discussed at the end of the review.

A bifunctionalized NiCo2O4-Au composite: Intrinsic peroxidase and oxidase catalytic activities for killing bacteria and disinfecting wound

A NiCo₂O₄-Au composite was fabricated following the calcination-reduction method and testified to exhibit the intrinsic high peroxidase- and oxidase-like activities. The composite could activate a low level of H₂O₂ (100 μM) to kill E. coli and S. aureus. NiCo₂O₄-Au composite could be easily separated by an external magnet from the media and reused several times. NiCo₂O₄-Au composite could also effectively damage the existing biofilms and prevent the formation of new biofilms. The electron spin resonance tests showed that NiCo₂O₄-Au composite catalyzed H₂O₂ into reactive oxygen species (ROS), mainly including OH, O₂^-, and ¹O₂; while the oxidase-like activity of NiCo₂O₄-Au also stemmed from the ROS formation in the absence of H₂O₂. The radical trapping experiment confirmed that OH and ¹O₂ were the main radicals in the antibacterial process for NiCo₂O₄-Au in the presence of H₂O₂. A NiCo₂O₄-Au based Band-Aid was also designed, which exhibited high anti-infective and wound-healing properties. This study has demonstrated that NiCo₂O₄-Au composite can be a promising antibacterial agent in environmental and clinical applications.

Nanozymes for Environmental Pollutant Monitoring and Remediation

Nanozymes are advanced nanomaterials which mimic natural enzymes by exhibiting enzyme-like properties. As nanozymes offer better structural stability over their respective natural enzymes, they are ideal candidates for real-time and/or remote environmental pollutant monitoring and remediation. In this review, we classify nanozymes into four types depending on their enzyme-mimicking behaviour (active metal centre mimic, functional mimic, nanocomposite or 3D structural mimic) and offer mechanistic insights into the nature of their catalytic activity. Following this, we discuss the current environmental translation of nanozymes into a powerful sensing or remediation tool through inventive nano-architectural design of nanozymes and their transduction methodologies. Here, we focus on recent developments in nanozymes for the detection of heavy metal ions, pesticides and other organic pollutants, emphasising optical methods and a few electrochemical techniques. Strategies to remediate persistent organic pollutants such as pesticides, phenols, antibiotics and textile dyes are included. We conclude with a discussion on the practical deployment of these nanozymes in terms of their effectiveness, reusability, real-time in-field application, commercial production and regulatory considerations.

A review on metal nanozyme-based sensing of heavy metal ions: Challenges and future perspectives

Large scale mining, manufacturing industries, exploitation of underground water, depletion of groundwater level, and uncontrolled discharge of industrial wastes have caused severe heavy metal ion pollution to the environment throughout the world. Therefore, the rapid detection of such toxic metal ions is inevitable. However, conventional methods require sophisticated instruments and skilled manpower and are difficult to operate in on-field conditions. Recently, metal nanozyme-based assays have been found to have the potential as an alternative to conventional methods due to their portability, simplicity, and high sensitivity to detect metal ion concentration to as low as parts per trillion (ppt). Metal nanozyme-based systems for heavy metal ions enable rapid and cheap screening on the spot with a very simple instrument such as a UV-vis absorption spectrophotometer and therefore, are convenient for use in field operations, especially in remote parts of the world. The sensing mechanism of a nanozyme-based sensor is highly dependent on its surface properties and specific interactions with particular metal ion species. Such method often encounters selectivity issues, unlike natural enzyme-based assays. Therefore, in this review, we mainly focus our discussion on different types of target recognition and inhibition/enhancement mechanisms, and their responses toward the catalytic activity in the sensing of target metal ions, design strategies, challenges, and future perspectives.

Rapid and sensitive colorimetric detection of dopamine based on the enhanced-oxidase mimicking activity of cerium(iv)

A fast and sensitive approach for colorimetric determination of DA based on the enhanced oxidase-like catalytic activity of Ce⁴⁺ by DA was developed.

Colorimetric Detection of Salicylic Acid in Aspirin Using MIL-53(Fe) Nanozyme

The impurity of salicylic acid (SA) in aspirin is a required inspection item for drug quality control. Since free SA is significantly toxic for humans, the content determination of free SA is absolutely necessary to ensure people's health. In this work, a facile colorimetric method was developed for the detection of SA in aspirin by utilizing the MIL-53(Fe) nanozyme. As MIL-53(Fe) possesses enzyme mimicking catalytic activity, 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) can be easily oxidized to blue-oxidized TMB (oxTMB) with the existence of H2O2. Moreover, an inhibition effect on the catalytic activity of the MIL-53(Fe) nanozyme is induced due to the specific complexation between SA and Fe3+ in the center of MIL-53(Fe), which results in a lighter color in the oxTMB. The color change of oxTMB can be seen easily by the naked eye with the addition of different concentrations of SA. Thus, a simple colorimetric platform was established for effectively monitoring SA. A good linear relationship (R 2 = 0.9990) was obtained in the concentration range of 0.4-28 μmol L-1, and the detection limit was 0.26 μmol L-1. In particular, the rationally designed system has been well-applied to the detection of SA impurity in aspirin. Satisfyingly, the detection results are highly in accord with those of HPLC. This novel colorimetric platform broadens the application prospects of nanozymes in the field of pharmaceutical analysis.
