An injectable chitosan-based hydrogel incorporating carbon dots with dual enzyme-mimic activities for synergistically treatment of bacteria infected wounds

Bacterial infections pose a serious threat to human health, and the emergence of superbugs and the growing antibiotic resistance phenomenon have made the development of novel antimicrobial products. In this paper, an ultrasmall Cu, N co-doped carbon dots (CDs-Cu-N) with excellent peroxidase mimic activity and enhanced catalase mimic activity was successfully prepared and anchored to an injectable chitosan (CS)-based hybrid hydrogel. As expected, the CDs-Cu-N-H2O2-CS hybrid hydrogel maintains the excellent enzyme-mimicking properties of CDs-Cu-N and shows superior antibacterial property, which has been proven to effectively promote the healing of S. aureus-infected wounds with good biocompatibility. Benefitting from the dual-enzyme-mimic activity of CDs-Cu-N, the hybrid hydrogel not only can catalyze the generation of highly toxic ROS from low concentration of H2O2 to inhibit the bacterial infections, but also can significantly promote the wound tissue repair and regeneration by improving the anoxic microenvironment and promoting neovascularization. In addition, this hybrid hydrogel also possessed excellent injectability and moldability. It can adapt to various the irregular shapes of acute wounds, maintaining a moist and safe microenvironment while prolonging the action time of nanozyme on wounds, thus promoting wound healing. This injectable hybrid hydrogel shows great potential applications in the field of wound infection management.

Shining light on carbon dots: Toward enhanced antibacterial activity for biofilm disruption

In spite of tremendous efforts dedicated to addressing bacterial infections and biofilm formation, the post-antibiotic ear continues to witness a gap between the established materials and an easily accessible yet biocompatible antibacterial reagent. Here we show carbon dots (CDs) synthesized via a single hydrothermal process can afford promising antibacterial activity that can be further enhanced by exposure to light. By using citric acid and polyethyleneimine as the precursors, the photoluminescence CDs can be produced within a one-pot, one-step hydrothermal reaction in only 2 h. The CDs demonstrate robust antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and, notably, a considerable enhancement of antibacterial effect can be observed upon photo-irradiation. Mechanistic insights reveal that the CDs generate singlet oxygen (1O2) when exposed to light, leading to an augmented reactive oxygen species level. The approach for disruption of biofilms and inhibition of biofilm formation by using the CDs has also been established. Our findings present a potential solution to combat antibacterial resistance and offer a path to reduce dependence on traditional antibiotics.

pH/glutathione dual-responsive copper sulfide-coated organic mesoporous silica for synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy

Nanodrug delivery systems (NDSs), such as mesoporous silica, have been widely studied because of their high specific surface area, high loading rate, and easy modification; however, they are not easily metabolized and excreted by the human body and may be potentially harmful. Hence, we aimed to examine the synergistic anti-tumor effects of ex vivo chemo-photothermal therapy to develop a rational and highly biocompatible treatment protocol for tumors. We constructed a biodegradable NDS using organic mesoporous silica with a tetrasulfide bond structure, copper sulfide core, and folic acid-modified surface (CuS@DMONs-FA-DOX-PEG) to target a tumor site, dissociate, and release the drug. The degradation ability, photothermal conversion ability, hemocompatibility, and in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor effects of the CuS@DMONs-FA-DOX-PEG nanoparticles were evaluated. Our findings revealed that the nanoparticles encapsulated in copper sulfide exhibited significant photothermal activity and optimal photothermal conversion rate. Further, the drug was accurately delivered and released into the target tumor cells, annihilating them. This study demonstrated the successful preparation, safety, and synergistic anti-tumor effects of chemo-photothermal therapeutic nanomaterials.

Amyloid-like nanofibrous network confined and aligned ultrafine bimetallic nanozymes for smart antibacterial therapy

Nanozyme-based antibacterial therapy (NABT) has emerged as a promising strategy to combat bacterial antimicrobial resistance. Engineering the noble metal nanozymes with strong bacterial capture and high catalytic activity for enhanced NABT is highly anticipated but still challenged. Herein, we developed hybrid nanozymes by engineering ultrafine bimetallic Au/Cu nanoparticles confined on the lysozyme amyloid-like nanofibrous networks (LNF). The introduction of copper in the nanozymes facilitates the H2O2 adsorption and reduces the energy barrier for activating the H2O2 decomposition to form •OH, meanwhile displaying the significantly enhanced POD-like activity under NIR irradiation. Taking advantage of the inherent supramolecular networks inspired from human defensin 6-trapping bacteria mechanism, the hybrid nanozymes effectively capture the bacteria and allow the catalytic attack around the bacterial surfaces to improve the antibacterial efficiency. Finally, the as-prepared nanozymes exhibit the preeminent bactericidal efficacy against bacteria, especially for drug-resistant bacteria both in vitro and in vivo, and the effect on wound healing.

Photothermal/Photoacoustic Therapy Combined with Metal-Based Nanomaterials for the Treatment of Microbial Infections

The increased spread and persistence of bacterial drug-resistant phenotypes remains a public health concern and has contributed significantly to the challenge of combating antibiotic resistance. Nanotechnology is considered an encouraging strategy in the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections; this new strategy should improve therapeutic efficacy and minimize side effects. Evidence has shown that various nanomaterials with antibacterial performance, such as metal-based nanoparticles (i.e., silver, gold, copper, and zinc oxide) have intrinsic antibacterial properties. These antibacterial agents, such as those made of metal oxides, carbon nanomaterials, and polymers, have been used not only to improve antibacterial efficacy but also to reduce bacterial drug resistance due to their interaction with bacteria and their photophysical properties. These nanostructures have been used as effective agents for photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) to kill bacteria locally by heating or the controlled production of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, PTT or PDT therapies have also been combined with photoacoustic (PA) imaging to simultaneously improve treatment efficacy, safety, and accuracy. In this present review, we present, on the one hand, a summary of research highlighting the use of PTT-sensitive metallic nanomaterials for the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections, and, on the other hand, an overview of studies showing the PA-mediated theranostic functionality of metal-based nanomaterials.

AgPd nanocages sandwiched between a MXene nanosheet and PDA layer for photothermally improved catalytic activity and antibacterial properties

In this work, a MXene@AgPd/polydopamine (PDA) nanosheet with excellent photothermal conversion efficiency was successfully synthesized by a simple redox-oxidative polymerization method. Interestingly, AgPd bimetallic nanocrystals sandwiched between a MXene nanosheet and PDA layer have cage-like nanostructure, which is favorable for high catalytic efficiency and antibacterial performance. Importantly, the MXene@AgPd/PDA nanosheet exhibits good catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (1.2 min^-1 mg^-1) and the catalytic dynamics can be improved by about 1.2 times under NIR (near-infrared light, 808 nm, and 2.5 W cm^-2) irradiation. As the PDA shell is well protected, the MXene@AgPd/PDA nanosheet retained more than 90% catalytic activity after 6 cycles. In addition, due to the presence of the Ag component, the MXene@AgPd/PDA nanosheet exhibited good antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria. Under near-infrared light irradiation, its antibacterial activity was further enhanced due to the NIR photothermal effect.

A Review on Gold Nanotriangles: Synthesis, Self-Assembly and Their Applications

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with interesting optical properties have attracted much attention in recent years. The synthesis and plasmonic properties of AuNPs with a controllable size and shape have been extensively investigated. Among these AuNPs, gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) exhibited unique optical and plasmonic properties due to their special triangular anisotropy. Indeed, AuNTs showed promising applications in optoelectronics, optical sensing, imaging and other fields. However, only few reviews about these applications have been reported. Herein, we comprehensively reviewed the synthesis and self-assembly of AuNTs and their applications in recent years. The preparation protocols of AuNTs are mainly categorized into chemical synthesis, biosynthesis and physical-stimulus-induced synthesis. The comparison between the advantages and disadvantages of various synthetic strategies are discussed. Furthermore, the specific surface modification of AuNTs and their self-assembly into different dimensional nano- or microstructures by various interparticle interactions are introduced. Based on the unique physical properties of AuNTs and their assemblies, the applications towards chemical biology and sensing were developed. Finally, the future development of AuNTs is prospected.

Plasmonic Nanozymes: Leveraging Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance to Boost the Enzyme-Mimicking Activity of Nanomaterials

Nanozymes, a type of nanomaterials that function similarly to natural enzymes, receive extensive attention in biomedical fields. However, the widespread applications of nanozymes are greatly plagued by their unsatisfactory enzyme-mimicking activity. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), a nanoscale physical phenomenon described as the collective oscillation of surface free electrons in plasmonic nanoparticles under light irradiation, offers a robust universal paradigm to boost the catalytic performance of nanozymes. Plasmonic nanozymes (PNzymes) with elevated enzyme-mimicking activity by leveraging LSPR, emerge and provide unprecedented opportunities for biocatalysis. In this review, the physical mechanisms behind PNzymes are thoroughly revealed including near-field enhancement, hot carriers, and the photothermal effect. The rational design and applications of PNzymes in biosensing, cancer therapy, and bacterial infections elimination are systematically introduced. Current challenges and further perspectives of PNzymes are also summarized and discussed to stimulate their clinical translation. It is hoped that this review can attract more researchers to further advance the promising field of PNzymes and open up a new avenue for optimizing the enzyme-mimicking activity of nanozymes to create superior nanocatalysts for biomedical applications.

The enhanced photocatalytic sterilization of MOF-Based nanohybrid for rapid and portable therapy of bacteria-infected open wounds

Open wounds are prone to infection and difficult to heal, which even threatens the life of patients because bacterial infections can induce other lethal complications without prompt treatment. The commonly used antibiotics treatment for bacterial infections has been reported to cause globally bacterial resistance and even the occurrence of superbacteria. The highly effective and antibiotic-independent therapeutic strategies are urgently needed for treating various kinds of bacteria-infected diseases. In this work, we synthesized an eco-friendly nanohybrid material (ZnDMZ) consisting of a kind of biodegradable metal organic framework (MOF, ZIF-8) combined with Zn-doped MoS₂ (Zn–MoS₂) nanosheets, which exhibited great ability to kill bacteria and promote the healing of bacteria-infected wounds under 660 nm light irradiation. The underlying mechanism is that besides the local hyperthermia, the nanohybrid material exhibits enhanced photocatalytic performance than single component in it, i.e., it can also be excited by 660 nm light to produce more oxygen radical species (ROS) due to the following factors. On one hand, the Zn doping can reduce the work function and the band gap of MoS₂, which promotes the movement of photoexcited electrons to the surface of the material. On the other hand, the combination between Zn–MoS₂ and MOF induces the formation of a built-in electric field due to their work function difference, thus accelerating the separation of photoexcited electron-hole pairs. Because of the synergy of photocatalytic effect, photothermal effect and the released Zn ions, the synthesized ZnDMZ possessed a highly effective antibacterial efficacy of 99.9% against Staphylococcus aureus under 660 nm light irradiation for 20 min without cytotoxicity. In vivo tests showed that this nanohybrid material promoted the wound healing due to the released Zn ions. This nanohybrid will be promising for rapid and portable treatment of bacteria-infected open wounds in pathogenic bacteria contaminated environments.

Liquid exfoliation of V8C7 nanodots as peroxidase-like nanozymes for photothermal-catalytic synergistic antibacterial treatment

Nanozymes are effective antibiotics that use reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by Fenton/Fenton-like reactions to kill bacteria. However, its activity is still not satisfactory and requires large amounts of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) with side effects on normal tissues. Herein, ultrasmall V₈C₇ nanodots (NDs) are successfully constructed by the liquid-phase exfoliation method for photothermal-catalytic synergistic antibacterial treatment. The prepared V₈C₇ NDs are horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-like nanozymes that can efficiently catalyze H₂O₂ to produce a large amount of ROS. Unlike traditional HRP-like nanozymes, V₈C₇ NDs can have a good catalytic effect under slightly acidic conditions (pH=5.5). Moreover, V₈C₇ NDs have good near-infrared (NIR) absorption and high photothermal conversion efficiency (PTCE, 50.39%), which can be used for photothermal treatment (PTT) of bacteria. In addition, the mild photothermal effect can further enhance the HRP-like catalytic activity of V₈C₇ NDs, thereby further enhancing the antibacterial performance of V₈C₇ NDs. In vitro results show that V₈C₇ NDs can effectively eradicate Escherichia coli (E. coli, gram-negative) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA, gram-positive) under laser irradiation and the presence of H₂O₂, possessing spectral antibacterial properties. More importantly, V₈C₇ NDs display satisfactory therapeutic effects on wounds infected by MRSA in vivo, and their toxicity is negligible, suggesting that they may have great potential for application as powerful and safe antibacterial agents. This work presents a practical antibacterial strategy by combining PTT and catalytic therapy to achieve efficient treatment of bacteria-infected wounds. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: (1) Ultrasmall V₈C₇ NDs were prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method. (2) V₈C₇ NDs showed good photothermal, catalytic properties. (3) V₈C₇ NDs achieved satisfactory photothermal-catalytic synergistic antibacterial treatment.

A Self-Assembled Fmoc-Diphenylalanine Hydrogel-Encapsulated Pt Nanozyme as Oxidase- and Peroxidase-Like Breaking pH Limitation for Potential Antimicrobial Application

Nanomaterials with oxidase- and peroxidase-like activities have potential in antibacterial therapy. The optimal activity of most nanozymes occurred in acidic pH (3.0-5.0), while the pH in biological systems is mostly near neutral. Herein, a general system using 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl-modified diphenylalanine (Fmoc-FF) hydrogel for enhancing oxidase- and peroxidase-like activities of Pt NPs and other typical enzyme-like nanomaterials at neutral or even alkaline pH is proposed. In this system, Fmoc-FF hydrogel provides an acidic microenvironment for Pt NPs due to hydrogen protons (H⁺ ) produced by the dissociation of F at neutral pH. As a result, Pt NPs exhibits 6-fold enhanced oxidase-like and 26-fold peroxidase-like activity after being encapsulated into Fmoc-FF hydrogel at pH 7.0. Based on outstanding enzymatic activities and the antibacterial activity of Fmoc-FF hydrogel itself, Pt-Fmoc-FF hydrogel realizes excellent antibacterial effect. This design provides a universal strategy to break pH limitation of nanozymes and promotes the biological applications of nanozymes.

Engineering single-atom catalysts toward biomedical applications

Due to inherent structural defects, common nanocatalysts always display limited catalytic activity and selectivity, making it practically difficult for them to replace natural enzymes in a broad scope of biologically important applications. By decreasing the size of the nanocatalysts, their catalytic activity and selectivity will be substantially improved. Guided by this concept, the advances of nanocatalysts now enter an era of atomic-level precise control. Single-atom catalysts (denoted as SACs), characterized by atomically dispersed active sites, strikingly show utmost atomic utilization, precisely located metal centers, unique metal-support interactions and identical coordination environments. Such advantages of SACs drastically boost the specific activity per metal atom, and thus provide great potential for achieving superior catalytic activity and selectivity to functionally mimic or even outperform natural enzymes of interest. Although the size of the catalysts does matter, it is not clear whether the guideline of "the smaller, the better" is still correct for developing catalysts at the single-atom scale. Thus, it is clearly a new, urgent issue to address before further extending SACs into biomedical applications, representing an important branch of nanomedicine. This review begins by providing an overview of recent advances of synthesis strategies of SACs, which serve as a basis for the discussion of emerging achievements in improving the enzyme-like catalytic properties at an atomic level. Then, we carefully compare the structures and functions of catalysts at various scales from nanoparticles, nanoclusters, and few-atom clusters to single atoms. Contrary to conventional wisdom, SACs are not the most catalytically active catalysts in specific reactions, especially those requiring multi-site auxiliary activities. After that, we highlight the unique roles of SACs toward biomedical applications. To appreciate these advances, the challenges and prospects in rapidly growing studies of SACs-related catalytic nanomedicine are also discussed in this review.

Advances in Nanostructures for Antimicrobial Therapy

Microbial infections caused by a variety of drug-resistant microorganisms are more common, but there are fewer and fewer approved new antimicrobial chemotherapeutics for systemic administration capable of acting against these resistant infectious pathogens. Formulation innovations of existing drugs are gaining prominence, while the application of nanotechnologies is a useful alternative for improving/increasing the effect of existing antimicrobial drugs. Nanomaterials represent one of the possible strategies to address this unfortunate situation. This review aims to summarize the most current results of nanoformulations of antibiotics and antibacterial active nanomaterials. Nanoformulations of antimicrobial peptides, synergistic combinations of antimicrobial-active agents with nitric oxide donors or combinations of small organic molecules or polymers with metals, metal oxides or metalloids are discussed as well. The mechanisms of actions of selected nanoformulations, including systems with magnetic, photothermal or photodynamic effects, are briefly described.

Nanozybiotics: Nanozyme-Based Antibacterials against Bacterial Resistance

Infectious diseases caused by bacteria represent a global threat to human health. However, due to the abuse of antibiotics, drug-resistant bacteria have evolved rapidly and led to the failure of antibiotics treatment. Alternative antimicrobial strategies different to traditional antibiotics are urgently needed. Enzyme-based antibacterials (Enzybiotics) have gradually attracted interest owing to their advantages including high specificity, rapid mode-of-action, no resistance development, etc. However, due to their low stability, potential immunogenicity, and high cost of natural enzymes, enzybiotics have limitations in practical antibacterial therapy. In recent years, many nanomaterials with enzyme-like activities (Nanozymes) have been discovered as a new generation of artificial enzymes and perform catalytic antibacterial effects against bacterial resistance. To highlight the progress in this field of nanozyme-based antibacterials (Nanozybiotics), this review discussed the antibacterial mechanism of action of nanozybiotics with a comparison with enzybiotics. We propose that nanozybiotics may bear promising applications in antibacterial therapy, due to their high stability, rapid bacterial killing, biofilm elimination, and low cost.

Development of an Au-anchored Fe Single-atom nanozyme for biocatalysis and enhanced tumor photothermal therapy

Near-infrared light-induced photothermal therapy (PTT) can achieve effective tumor ablation, but the associated hyperthermic temperatures result in off-target inflammatory damage to proximal tissues. Therefore, killing the tumor at a lower temperature is vital to improving the clinical effect of PTT. In this study, an Au-integrated Fe single-atom nanozyme (FeSAzyme) was developed through the immobilization of an ultrasmall Au nanozyme within a metal-organic framework via an in situ reduction approach. The nanozyme was found to exhibit favorable glucose oxidase- (GOD) like activity and photosensitizing properties to better achieve low-temperature PTT. The Au-carbon nanozyme was able to markedly inhibit tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo due to its GOD-like activity and enhanced photodynamic and photothermal properties. In addition, the integration of the Au nanozyme enhanced the FeSAzyme's peroxidase activity and catalyzed endogenous H₂O₂ species to generate reactive oxide species, thereby facilitating chemodynamic therapy. Furthermore, its integration markedly enhanced the PTT performance of the FeSAzyme, which achieved pronounced synergistic anti-tumor efficacy. The enzymatic activity and photothermal/photosensitive properties of the Au-FeSAzyme may help to overcome traditional therapeutic limitations, indicating its potential for catalytic cascade nanozymes in biomedical applications.

Hierarchical porous MoS2 particles: excellent multi-enzyme-like activities, mechanism and its sensitive phenol sensing based on inhibition of sulfite oxidase mimics

It is important to exploit highly efficient methods for detecting pollutants selectively and sensitively. Artificial enzymes are promising to replace natural enzymes with diverse functions for sustainable developments and various applications. However, it remains the challenge to develop novel mimic enzymes or multi-enzyme mimics for pollutant detection. Herein we report hierarchical porous MoS₂ particles prepared by a simple hydrothermal method, which demonstrated excellent sulfite oxidase (SuO_x)-, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidase- and superoxide dismutase-mimicking activities. In addition, the catalytic conditions for SuO_x-like and NADH oxidase-like activities of MoS₂ were optimized. The catalytic mechanism of the NADH oxidase mimics is that O₂ involves in the oxidation of NADH, to generate O₂^.- intermediate and finally turn to H₂O₂, while SuO_x mimics comes from that MoS₂ particles can effectively catalyze sulfite to reduce [Fe(CN)₆]^3-. Based on the excellent SuO_x-like activity of MoS₂ particles, while phenol can inhibit the oxidation of sulfite, a phenol colorimetric sensor was explored with the dynamic range of 2-1000 μM and the limit of detection of 0.72 μM, applicable to detect phenol in effluents. Therefore, MoS₂ particles with the SuO_x-like, NADH oxidase-like and SOD-like activities has broad application prospects in environmental monitoring and bio-analysis.

Fabrication of a Lignin-Copper Sulfide-Incorporated PVA Hydrogel with Near-Infrared-Activated Photothermal/Photodynamic/Peroxidase-like Performance for Combating Bacteria and Biofilms

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria and biofilms are among the most difficult challenges in infection treatment. Herein, lignin-copper sulfide (LS-CuS) nanocomposites were incorporated into a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to fabricate a LS-CuS@PVA composite hydrogel with near-infrared-activated photothermal, photodynamic, and peroxidase-like performance. The antibacterial tests of LS-CuS@PVA exhibited the highest antibacterial rate that caused 3.8-log and 4.8-log reductions of colony forming units (CFUs) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in the presence of H₂O₂ under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation for 10 min. The significantly improved bactericidal performance could be attributed to the synergistic effects of hyperthermia and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, the LS-CuS@PVA hydrogel could eradicate the already formed biofilm and inhibit biofilm formation. Considering the highly effective antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the LS-CuS@PVA hydrogel, this work could provide new insights for the design of poly(vinyl alcohol)-based composite hydrogels for wound healing and wound dressing.

Copper single-atom catalysts with photothermal performance and enhanced nanozyme activity for bacteria-infected wound therapy

Nanozymes have become a new generation of antibiotics with exciting broad-spectrum antibacterial properties and negligible biological toxicity. However, their inherent low catalytic activity limits their antibacterial properties. Herein, Cu single-atom sites/N doped porous carbon (Cu SASs/NPC) is successfully constructed for photothermal-catalytic antibacterial treatment by a pyrolysis-etching-adsorption-pyrolysis (PEAP) strategy. Cu SASs/NPC have stronger peroxidase-like catalytic activity, glutathione (GSH)-depleting function, and photothermal property compared with non-Cu-doped NPC, indicating that Cu doping significantly improves the catalytic performance of nanozymes. Cu SASs/NPC can effectively induce peroxidase-like activity in the presence of H2O2, thereby generating a large amount of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which have a certain killing effect on bacteria and make bacteria more susceptible to temperature. The introduction of near-infrared (NIR) light can generate hyperthermia to fight bacteria, and enhance the peroxidase-like catalytic activity, thereby generating additional •OH to destroy bacteria. Interestingly, Cu SASs/NPC can act as GSH peroxidase (GSH-Px)-like nanozymes, which can deplete GSH in bacteria, thereby significantly improving the sterilization effect. PTT-catalytic synergistic antibacterial strategy produces almost 100% antibacterial efficiency against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In vivo experiments show a better PTT-catalytic synergistic therapeutic performance on MRSA-infected mouse wounds. Overall, our work highlights the wide antibacterial and anti-infective bio-applications of Cu single-atom-containing catalysts.

CuxO nanorods with excellent regenerable NADH peroxidase mimics and its application for selective and sensitive fluorimetric ethanol sensing

Cu_xO nanorods with excellent NADH peroxidase mimics were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The catalytic oxidation of NADH to NAD cofactor strictly follows the enzymatic kinetics with high catalytic rate and strong affinity. The catalytic mechanism of Cu_xO NRs was that in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, the catalytic oxidizing NADH to NAD ⁺ involving with O₂^.-.anion production, making it realistic to mutually convert between coenzymes. Considering that the mutual transformation of NADH/NAD cofactors plays an important role in biological function, combination of Cu_xO NRs with alcohol dehydrogenase, a highly selective method for fluorimetric detection of ethanol was established. The as-proposed sensing platform is capable of dectecting alcohol with the limit of detection of 26.7 μM (S/N = 3) and applied in practical sample with satisfied accuracy and recovery. The as-developed regenerable NADH peroxidase mimics would also cast lights in biocatalysis, synthetic biology and bioenergy.

Rational synthesis of Three-Layered plasmonic nanocomposites of copper Sulfide/Gold/Zinc-Doped Prussian blue analogues for improved photothermal disinfection and wound healing

Bacteria-infected wounds have imposed serious challenges in human health whereas the abuse of antibiotics makes bacteria drug-resistant and becoming more and more difficult to deal with. Herein, we developed a drug-free three-layered photothermal bactericide from inside to outside consisting of copper sulfide (CuS), gold (Au) and zinc-doped Prussian blue analogues (ZnPBA) (named as CuS@Au@ZnPBA). The CuS@Au@ZnPBA was demonstrated to possess remarkably-improved photothermal property and excellent biosafety. Local heat generated by CuS@Au@ZnPBA under the irradiation of 808 nm laser enables efficient bacteria ablation in vitro and in a mouse model of cutaneous wound infection. Meanwhile, the released zinc ions (Zn²⁺) could upregulate the genes involved in collagen deposition to accelerate wound healing. Overall, the finely-designed nanocomposites can serve as a promising kind of antibacterial alternative to current antibiotic therapies against bacterial wound infections.

Bio-mimetic synthesis of catalytically active nano-silver using Bos taurus (A-2) urine

Herein we have synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using liquid metabolic waste of Bos taurus (A-2 type) urine. Various bio-molecules present in cow urine, are effectively used to reduce silver (Ag) ions into silver nanoparticles in one step. This is bio-inspired electron transfer to Ag ion for the formation of base Ag metal and is fairly prompt and facile. These nanoparticles act as a positive catalyst for various organic transformation reactions. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the as-synthesized Ag NPs are widely characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transmission infra-red spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The as-synthesized bio-mimetic Ag NPs show potential activity for several reduction reactions of nitro groups. The Ag NPs were also used for degradation of hazardous dyes such as Methylene blue and Crystal violet with good degradation rate constant.

Selective colorimetric sensing of sub-nanomolar Hg2+ based on its significantly enhancing peroxidase mimics of silver/copper nanoclusters

A simple colorimetric sensing strategy for Hg²⁺ ions was developed using silver/copper nanoclusters (Ag/Cu NCs) with excellent selectivity and sensitivity. Bimetallic Ag/Cu NCs were synthesized by using glutathione (GSH) as a template and sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. It was found that the peroxidase-like activity of Ag/Cu NCs was significantly enhanced in the presence of Hg²⁺. Therefore, a colorimetric method based on catalysis was developed to detect Hg²⁺ with a linear concentration range of 0.1-700 nM and a detection limit of 0.05 nM (S/N = 3). The common species have no effect on Hg²⁺ ion detection. Furthermore, this method is applicable to accurately detect Hg²⁺ in real aqueous samples and is reproducible. Therefore, owing to the merits of sensitivity, selectivity, rapid response and visual read-out, it can be promising in the development of a portable Hg²⁺ analyzer for on-site detection.

Versatile fluorinated Pd@Au nanoplates doped with yttrium for tumor theranostics

As one of the emerging modalities of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 19F MRI is highly conducive for the specific detection and imaging of deep-seated tumors, with negligible background. However, most 19F MRI probe designs are constructed with organic CF3, which contains rich fluorine atoms, and few of the fluorine-containing groups are equipped with therapeutic function. Herein, we designed a versatile 19F MRI-based theranostic nanoplatform, FY-Pd@Au nano-metallacages (FY-Pd@Au NCs), which not only serve as a 19F MRI/CT/PAI contrast agent, but also produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) by type I photodynamic therapy (PDT) pathway, as well as heat for photothermal therapy (PTT), under the single NIR laser irradiation. Overall, this work successfully built a theranostics nanoplatform based on 19F MRI.

Completely green synthesis of rose-shaped Au nanostructures and their catalytic applications

A novel protocol for the one-pot, template/seed-free, and completely green synthesis of rose-shaped Au nanostructures with unique three-dimensional hierarchical structures was developed.
