A solid noncovalent organic double-helix framework catalyzes asymmetric [6 + 4] cycloaddition

Whereas [4 + 2] cycloadditions are among the most powerful tools in the chemist's synthetic arsenal, controlling reactivity and selectivity of [6 + 4] cycloadditions has proven to be extremely challenging. Such transformations, especially if compatible with simple hydrocarbon-based substrates, could ultimately provide a general approach to highly valuable and otherwise difficult to access 10-membered rings. We report here that highly acidic and confined imidodiphosphorimidate catalysts do not catalyze this reaction under homogeneous conditions. Notably, however, they can spontaneously precipitate an insoluble and double helix-shaped noncovalent organic framework, which acts as a distinctively reactive and stereoselective catalyst of [6 + 4] cycloadditions of simple dienes with tropone.

Linkage-Mixed Covalent Organic Frameworks Synthesized by a Liquid-Solid Two-Phase Strategy for Photoenhanced Uranium Extraction

Synthesizing COFs with hybrid linkage coupling with both reversible and irreversible natures remains a challenging issue. Herein, we report the synthesis of two rare COFs constructed by both reversible and irreversible linkages through a liquid-solid two-phase strategy. A systematic study reveals a one-pot, two-step reaction mechanism for the two COFs, the first step being a reversible Schiff base reaction and the second step being an irreversible Knoevenagel reaction. Interestingly, this hybrid linkage COF is found to show an outstanding photoenhanced uranium extraction performance. The results not only provide a general and green approach to develop the linkage chemistry of COFs but also enrich the synthesis toolboxes and application of COFs.

Construction of Benzoxazine-linked One-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks Using the Mannich Reaction

Covalent polymerization of organic molecules into crystalline one-dimensional (1D) polymers is effective for achieving desired thermal, optical, and electrical properties, yet it remains a persistent synthetic challenge for their inherent tendency to adopt amorphous or semicrystalline phases. Here we report a strategy to synthesize crystalline 1D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) composing quasi-conjugated chains with benzoxazine linkages via the one-pot Mannich reaction. Through [4+2] and [2+2] type Mannich condensation reactions, we fabricated stoichiometric and sub-stoichiometric 1D covalent polymeric chains, respectively, using doubly and singly linked benzoxazine rings. The validity of their crystal structures has been directly visualized through state-of-the-art cryogenic low-dose electron microscopy techniques. Post-synthetic functionalizations of them with a chiral MacMillan catalyst produce crystalline organic photocatalysts that demonstrated excellent catalytic and recyclable performance in light-driven asymmetric alkylation of aldehydes, affording up to 94 % enantiomeric excess.

Structure Evolution of 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks Unveiled by Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction

We report 9 crystal structures of a two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF), including the parent Py-1P, 5 derivatives formed by chemical reactions, and 3 dynamic states by solvent exchange/loss. Structure details of these porous crystals, including stacking mode, interlayer distance, pore aperture, and incline angle, before, during, and after conversion processes in solution, were unveiled by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with resolutions up to 0.85 Å. The structure evolution is triggered by stepwise conformational transformation of the molecular building blocks in 2D COF, while their long-range ordering remained unsacrificed.

An integrated "rigid-flexible" strategy by side chain engineering towards high ion-conduction cationic covalent organic framework electrolytes

In recent years, solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) have become a new development trend, and it has become a top priority to design solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) that can rapidly and stably transport lithium ions in a variety of climatic environments. In this work, an integrated "rigid-flexible" dual-functional strategy is proposed to develop a cationic covalent organic framework (EO-BIm-iCOF) with well-defined flexible oligo(ethylene oxide) (EO) chains as an SSE for SSLMBs. As expected, the synergistic effects of the rigid cationic framework and flexible EO chains not only promote the dissociation of LiTFSI salts, but also greatly improve the transport of lithium ions, which endows LITFSI@EO-BIm-iCOF SSEs with a high Li+ conductivity of 1.08 × 10-4 S cm-1 and ionic transference number of 0.69 at room temperature. Besides, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have also elucidated the diffusion and transport mechanism of lithium ions in LITFSI@EO-BIm-iCOF SSEs. Interestingly, the assembled SSLMBs wherein LiFePO4 is paired with LITFSI@EO-BIm-iCOF SSEs display decent electrochemical properties at higher and lower temperatures. This work provides a great development prospect for the application of cationic COFs in solid-state batteries.

Constructing Photocatalytic Covalent Organic Frameworks with Aliphatic Linkers

Photocatalytic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are typically constructed with rigid aromatic linkers for crystallinity and extended π-conjugation. However, the essential hydrophobicity of the aromatic backbone can limit their performances in water-based photocatalytic reactions. Here, we for the first time report the synthesis of hydrophilic COFs with aliphatic linkers [tartaric acid dihydrazide (TAH) and butanedioic acid dihydrazide] that can function as efficient photocatalysts for H2O2 and H2 evolution. In these hydrophilic aliphatic linkers, the specific multiple hydrogen bonding networks not only enhance crystallization but also ensure an ideal compatibility of crystallinity, hydrophilicity, and light harvesting. The resulting aliphatic linker COFs adopt an unusual ABC stacking, giving rise to approximately 0.6 nm nanopores with an improved interaction with water guests. Remarkably, both aliphatic linker-based COFs show strong visible light absorption, along with a narrow optical band gap of ∼1.9 eV. The H2O2 evolution rate for TAH-COF reaches up to 6003 μmol h-1 g-1, in the absence of sacrificial agents, surpassing the performance of all previously reported COF-based photocatalysts. Theoretical calculations reveal that the TAH linker can enhance the indirect two-electron oxygen reduction reaction for H2O2 production by improving the O2 adsorption and stabilizing the *OOH intermediate. This study opens a new avenue for constructing semiconducting COFs using nonaromatic linkers.

Crystalline Olefin-Linked Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks as a Platform for Asymmetric Catalysis

The construction of olefin-linked chiral covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high crystallinity is highly desirable while remains great challenge due to the poor reversibility of the formation reaction for the olefin linkages during the in situ structural self-healing process. Herein, we successfully synthesized two sets of enantiomeric olefin-linked COFs. The chiral catalytic groups are uniformly distributed on the pore walls of COFs, resulting in the full exposure of catalytic sites to the reactants in asymmetric catalysis. The as-prepared (R)/(S)-CCOF8 exhibits excellent catalytic performance with exceeding 99 % enantiomeric excess in the enantioselective electrophilic amination reaction. Moreover, the heterogeneous chiral catalysts are conveniently recycled and could maintain the performance after ten catalytic cycles. Our findings expand the scope to construct stable and crystalline chiral COFs for the asymmetric catalysis.

Exceptional Anhydrous Proton Conduction in Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer an irreplaceable platform for mass transport, as they provide aligned one-dimensional channels as pathways. Especially, proton conduction is of great scientific interest and technological importance. However, unlike proton conduction under humidity, anhydrous proton conduction remains a challenge, as it requires robust materials and proceeds under harsh conditions. Here, we report exceptional anhydrous proton conduction in stable crystalline porous COFs by integrating neat phosphoric acid into the channels to form extended hydrogen-bonding networks. The phosphoric acid networks in the pores are stabilized by hierarchical multipoint and multichain hydrogen-bonding interactions with the 3D channel walls. We synthesized five hexagonal COFs that possess different pore sizes, which are gradually tuned from micropores to mesopores. Remarkably, mesoporous COFs with a high pore volume exhibit an exceptional anhydrous proton conductivity of 0.31 S cm-1, which marks the highest conductivity among all examples reported for COFs. We observed that the proton conductivity is dependent on the pore volume, pore size, and content of phosphoric acid. Increasing the pore volume improves the proton conductivity in an exponential fashion. Remarkably, changing the pore volume from 0.41 to 1.60 cm3 g-1 increases the proton conductivity by 1150-fold. Interestingly, as the pore size increases, the activation energy barrier of proton conduction decreases in linear mode. The mesopores enable fast proton hopping across the channels, while the micropores follow sluggish vehicle conduction. Experiments on tuning phosphoric acid loading contents revealed that a well-developed hydrogen-bonding phosphoric acid network in the pores is critical for proton conduction.

Asymmetric catalytic synthesis of chiral covalent organic framework composite (S)-DTP-COF@SiO2 for HPLC enantioseparations by normal-phase and reversed-phase chromatographic modes

A novel CCOF core-shell composite material (S)-DTP-COF@SiO2 was prepared via asymmetric catalytic and in situ growth strategy. The prepared (S)-DTP-COF@SiO2 was utilized as separation medium for HPLC enantioseparation using normal-phase and reversed-phase chromatographic modes, which displays excellent chiral separation performance for alcohols, esters, ketones, and epoxides, etc. Compared with chiral commercial chromatographic columns (Chiralpak AD-H and Chiralcel OD-H columns) and some previously reported chiral CCOF@SiO2 (CC-MP CCTF@SiO2 and MDI-β-CD-modified COF@SiO2)-packed columns, there are 4, 3, 13, and 15 tested racemic compounds that could not be resolved on the Chiralpak AD-H column, Chiralcel OD-H column, CC-MP CCTF@SiO2 column, and MDI-β-CD-modified COF@SiO2 column, respectively, which indicates that the resolution effect of (S)-DTP-COF@SiO2-packed column can be complementary to the other ones. The effects of the analyte mass, column temperature, and mobile phase composition on the enantiomeric separation were investigated. The chiral column exhibits good reproducibility after multiple consecutive injections. The RSDs (n = 5) of the peak area and retention time were less than 1.5% for repetitive separation of 2-methoxy-2-phenylethanol and 1-phenyl-1-pentanol. The chiral core-shell composite (S)-DTP-COF@SiO2 exhibited good enantiomeric separation performance, which not only demonstrates its potential as a novel CSP material in HPLC but also expands the range of applications for chiral COFs.

Recent progress for chiral stationary phases based on chiral porous materials in high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography separation

Chirality is a fundamental property of nature. Separation and analysis of racemates are of great importance in the fields of medicine and the production of chiral biopharmaceutical intermediates. Chiral chromatography has the characteristics of a wide separation range, fast separation speed, and high efficiency. The development and preparation of novel chiral stationary phases with good chiral recognition and separation capacity is the core and key of chiral chromatographic separation and analysis. In this work, the representative research progress of novel chiral porous crystal materials including chiral covalent organic frameworks, chiral porous organic cages, chiral metal-organic frameworks, and chiral metal-organic cages used as chiral stationary phases of capillary gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography over the last 4 years is reviewed in detail. The chiral recognition and separation properties of the representative studies in this review are also introduced and discussed.

Scalable Fabrication of Ionic-Conductive Covalent Organic Framework Fibers for Capturing of Sustainable Osmotic Energy

High-performance covalent organic framework (COF) fibers are demanded for an efficient capturing of blue osmotic power because of their excellent durability, simple integration, and large scalability. However, the scalable production of COF fibers is still very challenging due to the poor solubility and fragile structure of COFs. Herein, for the first time, it is reported that COF dispersions can be continuously processed into macroscopic, meter-long, and pure COF fibers using a wet spinning approach. The two presented COF fibers can be directly used for capturing of osmotic energy, avoiding the production of composite materials that require other additives and face challenges such as phase separation and environmental issues induced by the additives. A COF fiber exhibits power densities of 70.2 and 185.3 W m-2 at 50-fold and 500-fold salt gradients, respectively. These values outperform those of most reported systems, which indicate the high potential of COF fibers for capturing of blue osmotic energy.

Encapsulation engineering of porous crystalline frameworks for delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence

Delayed luminescence (DF), including phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibit common and broad application prospects in optoelectronic displays, biological imaging, and encryption. Thus, the combination of delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence is attracting increasing attention. The encapsulation of guest emitters in various host matrices to form host-guest systems has been demonstrated to be an appealing strategy to further enhance and/or modulate their delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence. Compared with conventional liquid crystals, polymers, and supramolecular matrices, porous crystalline frameworks (PCFs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), zeolites and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) can not only overcome shortcomings such as flexibility and disorder but also achieve the ordered encapsulation of guests and long-term stability of chiral structures, providing new promising host platforms for the development of DF and CPL. In this review, we provide a comprehensive and critical summary of the recent progress in host-guest photochemistry via the encapsulation engineering of guest emitters in PCFs, particularly focusing on delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence. Initially, the general principle of phosphorescence, TADF and CPL, the combination of DF and CPL, and energy transfer processes between host and guests are introduced. Subsequently, we comprehensively discuss the critical factors affecting the encapsulation engineering of guest emitters in PCFs, such as pore structures, the confinement effect, charge and energy transfer between the host and guest, conformational dynamics, and aggregation model of guest emitters. Thereafter, we summarize the effective methods for the preparation of host-guest systems, especially single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation and epitaxial growth, which are distinct from conventional methods based on amorphous materials. Then, the recent advancements in host-guest systems based on PCFs for delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence are highlighted. Finally, we present our personal insights into the challenges and future opportunities in this promising field.

Linkage Engineering in Covalent Organic Frameworks for Metal-Free Electrocatalytic C2H4 Production from CO2

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce ethylene (C2H4) is conducive to sustainable development of energy and environment. At present, most electrocatalysts for C2H4 production are limited to the heavy metal copper, meanwhile, achieving metal-free catalysis remains a challenge. Noted piperazine with sp3 N hybridization is beneficial to CO2 capture, but CO2RR performance and mechanism have been lacking. Herein, based on linkage engineering, we construct a novel high-density sp3 N catalytic array via introducing piperazine into the crystalline and microporous aminal-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Thanks to its high sp3 N density, strong CO2 capture capacity and great hydrophilicity, aminal-linked COF successfully achieves the conversion of CO2 to C2H4 with a Faraday efficiency up to 19.1 %, which is stand out in all reported metal-free COF electrocatalysts. In addition, a series of imine-linked COFs are synthesized and combined with DFT calculations to demonstrate the critical role of sp3 N in enhancing the kinetics of CO2RR. Therefore, this work reveals the extraordinary potential of linkage engineering in COFs to break through some catalytic bottlenecks.

Carborane-Cluster-Wrapped Copper Cluster with Cyclodextrin-like Cavities for Chiral Recognition

Chiral atomically precise metal clusters, known for their remarkable chiroptical properties, hold great potential for applications in chirality recognition. However, advancements in this field have been constrained by the limited exploration of host-guest chemistry, involving metal clusters. This study reports the synthesis of a chiral Cu16(C2B10H10S2)8 (denoted as Cu16@CB8, where C2B10H12S2H2 = 9,12-(HS)2-1,2-closo-carborane) cluster by an achiral carboranylthiolate ligand. The chiral R-/S-Cu16@CB8 cluster features chiral cavities reminiscent of cyclodextrins, which are surrounded by carborane clusters, yet they crystallize in a racemate. These cyclodextrin-like cavities demonstrated the specific recognition of amino acids, as indicated by the responsive output of circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signals of Cu16 moieties of the Cu16@CB8 cluster. Notably, a quantitative chiroptical analysis of amino acids in a short time and a concomitant deracemization of Cu16@CB8 were achieved. Density functional tight-binding molecular dynamics simulation and noncovalent interaction analysis further unraveled the great importance of the cavities and binding sites for chiral recognition. Dipeptide, tripeptide, and polypeptide containing the corresponding amino acids (Cys, Arg, or His residues) display the same chiral recognition, showing the generality of this approach. The functional synergy of dual clusters, comprising carborane and metal clusters, is for the first time demonstrated in the Cu16@CB8 cluster, resulting in the valuable quantification of the enantiomeric excess (ee) value of amino acids. This work opens a new avenue for chirality sensors based on chiral metal clusters with unique chiroptical properties and inspires the development of carborane clusters in host-guest chemistry.

Homochiral π-Rich Covalent Organic Frameworks Enabled Chirality Imprinting in Conjugated Polymers: Confined Polymerization and Chiral Memory from Scratch

Optically active π-conjugated polymers (OACPs) have garnered increasing research interest for their resemblance to biological helices and intriguing chirality-related functions. Traditional methods for synthesizing involve decorating achiral conjugated polymer architectures with enantiopure side substituents through complex organic synthesis. Here, we report a new approach: the templated synthesis of unsubstituted OACPs via supramolecularly confined polymerizations of achiral monomers within nanopores of 2D or 3D chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs). We show that the chiral π-rich nanospaces facilitate the in situ enantiospecific polymerization and self-propagation, akin to nonenzymatic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) system, resulting in chiral imprinting. The stacked polymer chains are kinetically inert enough to memorize the chiral information after liberating from CCOFs, and even after treatment at temperature up to 200 °C. The isolated OACPs demonstrate robust enantiodiscrimination, achieving up to 85 % ee in separating racemic amino acids. This underscores the potential of utilizing CCOFs as templates for supramolecularly imprinting optical activity into CPs, paving the way for synthetic evolution and advanced functional exploration of OACPs.

Trinuclear Cu-based covalent organic framework: π-conjugated framework regulating electron delocalization to promote photoreduction CO2

Sunlight-driven CO2 reduction to value-added chemicals is an effective strategy to promote carbon recycling. The exploration of catalysts with efficient charge separation is crucially important for highly efficient CO2 photoreduction. In this work, the preparation of metal-cluster-based covalent organic framework (CuABD) integrated features from both metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) through the condensation of diamines and functionalized trinuclear copper clusters demonstrate a thoughtful design strategy. The reported yield of 1.3 mmol g-1 h-1 for formic acid (HCOOH) under simulated solar irradiation is impressive, surpassing the performance of many COF- and MOF-based catalysts previously reported. Compared to its isomorphic metal-free structure (named BDFTD) and bare trinuclear Cu cluster which present extremely poor catalytic activities, CuABD displays remarkably enhanced CO2 reduction activity. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the efficient charge transfer between diamine monomer and cyclic trinuclear copper (I) units, and the electron delocalization of the π-conjugated framework are responsible for the appealing catalytic performance. In summary, the work presents a well-structured and scientifically sound exploration of a metal-cluster-based covalent organic framework for efficient CO2 reduction under sunlight.

π-π+ Interaction Promoting the Absorption of Electroactive Chiral Selectors into the Cavity of Conductive Covalent Organic Framework for Enantioselective Sensing of Electrochemically Silent Molecules

To date, achieving enantioselective electroanalysis for electrochemically silent chiral molecules is still highly desired. Here, an ionic covalent organic framework (COF) consisting of the pyridinium cation was derived from the tripyridinium Zincke salt and 1,4-phenylenediamine in a one-pot reaction. The electrochemical measurements revealed that the ionic backbone contributed to the electron transfer with a low charge transfer resistance. Besides, the π-π+ interaction between the pyridinium cation and ferrocenyl unit can promote the absorption of electroactive chiral ferrocenyl reagents into the hole of COF, so as to afford the electrochemical signals by themselves, replacing the testing enantiomers. As a result, the electroactive complex used as an electrochemical platform was highly effective at enantiomerically recognizing amino alcohols (prolinol, valinol, leucinol, and alaninol) and amino acids (methionine, serine, and penicillamine), giving the ratios of current intensity between l- and d-enantiomers in the range of 1.46-1.72. Moreover, the density functional theory calculations determined the possible intermolecular interactions between the testing enantiomers and chiral selector: namely, hydrogen bonds and electrostatic attractions. Overall, the present work offers an effective strategy to enlarge the electrochemical scope for chiral recognition based on electroactive chiral COFs.

Precise Regulation in Chain-Edge Structural Microenvironments of 1D Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalysis

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constitute a promising research topic for photocatalytic reactions, but the rules and conformational relationships of 1D COFs are poorly defined. Herein, the chain edge structure is designed by precise modulation at the atomic level, and the 1D COFs bonded by C, O, and S elements is directionally prepared for oxygen-tolerant photoinduced electron transfer-atom transfer radical polymerization (PET-ATRP) reactions. It is demonstrated that heteroatom-type chain edge structures (─O─, ─S─) lead to a decrease in intra-plane conjugation, which restricts the effective transport of photogenerated electrons along the direction of the 1D strip. In contrast, the all-carbon type chain edge structure (─C─) with higher intra-plane conjugation not only reduces the energy loss of photoexcited electrons but also enhances the carrier density, which exhibits the optimal photopolymerization performance. This work offers valuable guidance in the exploitation of 1D COFs for high photocatalytic performance. Chiral-induced synthesis of chiral covalent organic frameworks core-shell microspheres for HPLC enantioseparation

Two chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs) core-shell microspheres based on achiral organic precursors by chiral-induced synthesis strategy for HPLC enantioseparation are reported for the first time. Using n-hexane/isopropanol as mobile phase, various kinds of racemates were selected as analytes and separated on the CCOF-TpPa-1@SiO2 and CCOF-TpBD@SiO2-packed columns with a low column backpressure (3 ~ 9 bar). The fabricated two CCOFs@SiO2 chiral columns exhibited good separation performance towards various racemates with high column efficiency (e.g., 19,500 plates m-1 for (4-fluorophenyl)ethanol and 18,900 plates m-1 for 1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethanol) and good reproducibility. Some effects have been investigated such as the analyte mass and column temperature on the HPLC enantioseparation. Moreover, the chiral separation results of the CCOF-TpPa-1@SiO2 chiral column and the commercialized Chiralpak AD-H column show a good complementarity. This study demonstrates that the usage of chiral-induced synthesis strategy for preparing CCOFs core-shell microspheres as a novel stationary phase has a good application potential in HPLC.

Observation of Chiral Channels in Helical Covalent Organic Frameworks

Unraveling the mechanism of chirality transfer across length scales is crucial to the rational development of functional materials with hierarchical chirality. The key obstacle is the lack of structural information, especially at the mesoscopic level. We report herein the structural identification of helical covalent organic frameworks (heliCOFs) with hierarchical chirality, which integrate molecular chirality, channel chirality, and morphology chirality into one crystalline entity. Specifically, benefiting from the highly ordered structure of heliCOFs, the existence of chiral channels at the mesoscopic level has been confirmed by electron crystallography, and the handedness of these chiral channels has been directly determined through the stereopair imaging technique. Accordingly, the chirality transfer in heliCOFs from microscopic to macroscopic levels could be rationalized with a layer-rotating model that has been supported by both crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations. Observation of chiral channels in heliCOFs not only provides unprecedented data for the understanding of the chirality transfer process but also sheds new light on the rational construction of highly ordered polymeric materials with hierarchical chirality.

"All in One" Strategy for Achieving Superprotonic Conductivity by Incorporating Strong Acids into a Robust Imidazole-Linked Covalent Organic Framework

The fabrication of solid-state proton-conducting electrolytes possessing both high performance and long-life reusability is significant but challenging. An "all-in-one" composite, H3PO4@PyTFB-1-SO3H, including imidazole, sulfonic acid, and phosphoric acid, which are essential for proton conduction, was successfully prepared by chemical post-modification and physical loading in the rationally pre-synthesized imidazole-based nanoporous covalent organic framework (COF), PyTFB-1. The resultant H3PO4@PyTFB-1-SO3H exhibits superhigh proton conductivity with its value even highly up to 1.15 × 10-1 S cm-1 at 353 K and 98% relative humidity (RH), making it one of the highest COF-based composites reported so far under the same conditions. Experimental studies and theoretical calculations further confirmed that the imidazole and sulfonic acid groups have strong interactions with the H3PO4 molecules and the synergistic effect of these three groups dramatically improves the proton conductivity properties of H3PO4@PyTFB-1-SO3H. This work demonstrated that by aggregating multiple proton carriers into one composite, effective proton-conducting electrolyte can be feasibly achieved.

12 Connecting Sites Linked Three-dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks with Intrinsic Non-interpenetrated shp Topology for Photocatalytic H2O2 Synthesis

Developing high connectivity (>8) three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) towards new topologies and functions remains a great challenge owing to the difficulty in getting high connectivity organic building blocks. This however represents the most important step towards promoting the diversity of COFs due to the still limited dynamic covalent bonds available for constructing COFs at this stage. Herein, highly connected phthalocyanine-based (Pc-based) 3D COFs MPc-THHI-COFs (M=H2, Ni) were afforded from the reaction between 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octacarboxyphthalocyanine M(TAPc) (M=H2, Ni) and 5,5',5'',5''',5'''',5'''''-(triphenylene-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexayl)hexa(isophthalohydrazide) (THHI) with 12 connecting sites. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis together with theoretical simulations and transmission electron microscopy reveals their crystalline nature with an unprecedented non-interpenetrated shp topology. Experimental and theoretical investigations disclose the broadened visible light absorption range and narrow optical band gap of MPc-THHI-COFs. This in combination with their 3D nanochannels endows them with efficient photocatalysis performance for H2O2 generation from O2 and H2O via 2e- oxygen reduction reaction and 2e- water oxidation reaction under visible-light irradiation (λ >400 nm). This work provides valuable result for the development of high connectivity functional COFs towards diverse application potentials.

Peroxymonosulfate enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic dye by metal-free TpTt-COF under visible light irradiation

Recently, the activation of persulfate (PDS) by non-metallic photocatalysts under visible light has attracted significant interest in applications in environmental remediation. This study presents a pioneering investigation into the combined application of the TpTt-COF and PMS for visible light degradation of organic dyes. Synthesized orange TpTt-COF monomers exhibit exceptional crystallinity, a 2D structure, and notable stability in harsh conditions. The broad visible light absorption around a wavelength of 708 nm. The TpTt-COF emerges as a promising candidate for photocatalytic dye degradation. The study addresses high charge recombination in the TpTt-COF, highlighting the crucial role of its electron donor and acceptor for the PMS activation. Comparative analyses against traditional photocatalytic materials, such as the metal-free carbon-based material g-C3N4 and transition metal-containing TiO2, demonstrate TpTt-COF's superior performance, generating diverse free radicals. In simulated experiments, the TpTt-COF's degradation rate surpasses PMS-combined g-C3N4 by 13.9 times. and 1.6 times higher than the TpTt-COF alone. Remarkably, the TpTt-COF maintains high activity under harsh environments. Investigations into the degradation mechanism and the TpTt-COF's reusability reveal its efficiency and stability. Under visible light, TpTt-COF facilitates efficient electron-hole separation. Combining the TpTt-COF with PMS produces various radicals, ensuring effective separation and a synergistic effect. Radical quenching experiments confirm the pivotal role of O2-· radicals, while ·OH and SO4-· radicals intensify the degradation. After five cycles, TpTt-COF maintains an impressive 83.2% degradation efficiency. This study introduces an efficient photocatalytic system mediated by PMS and valuable insights into governing mechanisms for organic pollutant degradation in water environments.

Constructing Chiral Covalent-Organic Frameworks for Circularly Polarized Light Detection

The use of chiral covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as active elements in photodetectors to directly identify circularly polarized light (CPL) can meet the requirement of integration and miniaturization of the as-fabricated devices. Herein, the design and synthesis of two isoreticular chiral two-dimensional (2D) COFs (CityU-7 and CityU-8) by introducing photosensitive porphyrin-based amines (5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin) to enhance the optical absorption and chiral aldehyde linkage (2,5-bis((S/R))-2-methylbutoxy)terephthalaldehyde) to engender chirality for direct CPL detection  are  reported. Their crystalline structures  were  confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and low-dose transition electron microscopy. Employing both chiral COFs as the active layers in photodetectors, left-handed circularly (LHC) and right-handed circularly (RHC) polarized light at 405 nm can be well distinguishable with short response time, high responsivity, and satisfying detectivity. The study provides the first example on the design and synthesis of chiral COFs for direct detection of CPL.

Functionalization of Magnetic UiO-66-NH2 with a Chiral Cu(l-proline)2 Complex as a Hybrid Asymmetric Catalyst for CO2 Conversion into Cyclic Carbonates

In this study, a chiral [Cu(l-proline)2] complex-modified Fe3O4@SiO2@UiO-66-NH2(Zr) metal-organic framework [Fe3O4@SiO2@UiO-66-NH-Cu(l-proline)2] via multifunctionalization strategies was designed and synthesized. One simple approach to chiralize an achiral MOF-structure that cannot be directly chiralized using a chiral secondary agent like 4-hydroxy-l-proline. Therefore, this chiral catalyst was synthesized with a simple and multistep method. Accordingly, Fe3O4@SiO2@UiO-66-NH2 has been synthesized via Fe3O4 modification with tetraethyl orthosilicate and subsequently with ZrCl4 and 2-aminoterephthalic acid. The presence of the silica layer helps to stabilize the Fe3O4 core, while the bonding between Zr4+ and the -OH groups in the silica layer promotes the development of Zr-MOFs on the Fe3O4 surface, and then the surfaces of the synthesized magnetic MOFs composite are functionalized with 1,2-dichloroethane and Cu(II) complex with 4-hydroxy-l-proline, [Cu(l-proline)2] to afford the magnetically chiral nanocatalyst. Multiple techniques were employed to characterize this magnetically chiral nanocatalyst such as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), circular dichroism (CD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses. Moreover, a magnetically chiral nanocatalyst shows the asymmetric CO2 fixation reaction under solvent-free conditions at 80 °C and in ethanol under reflux conditions with up to 99 and 98% ee, respectively. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism was illustrated concerning the total energy of the reactant, intermediates and product, and the structural parameters were analyzed.

Three-Dimensional Homochiral Covalent Organic Frameworks with Intrinsic Chiral Topology

Although a variety of chiral porous framework materials have been reported, there are few examples known to combine molecular chirality, helicity, and three-dimensional (3D) intrinsically chiral topology in one structure, which is beneficial for chirality transfer and amplification. Here, we report the synthesis of the first two 3D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with an intrinsic chiral qzd topology, which exhibit unusual integration of various homochiral and homohelical features. By imine condensation of 4-connected porphyrin tetraamines and 2-connected enantiopure diene dialdehyde, we prepared two isostructural COFs with a noninterpenetrated qzd topology. The specific geometry and conformation flexibility of the V-shaped diene linker control the alignment of square-planar porphyrin units with rotational linkages and facilitate the creation of homochiral extended porous structures that feature a helical arrangement of porphyrins. Post-synthetic metalation of CCOF 23 with Rh(I) affords a heterogeneous catalyst for the asymmetric Michael addition reaction of aryl boronic acids to 2-cyclohexenone, which shows higher enantioselectivities compared to their homogeneous counterparts, presumably due to the confined effect of helical channels. This finding will provide an impetus to explore multichirality materials, offering new insights into the generation and control of helicity, homochirality, and enantioselectivity in the solid state.

Chiral Memory in Dynamic Transformation from Porous Organic Cages to Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enantiorecognition Analysis

The preservation of chirality during a transformation process, known as the "chiral memory" effect, has garnered significant attention across multiple research disciplines. Here, we first report the retention of the original chiral structure during dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC)-induced structural transformation from porous organic cages into covalent organic frameworks (COFs). A total of six two-dimensional chiral COFs constructed by entirely achiral building blocks were obtained through the DCC-induced substitution of chiral linkers in a homochiral cage (CC3-R or -S) using achiral amine monomers. Homochirality of these COFs resulted from the construction of 3-fold-symmetric benzene-1,3,5-methanimine cores with a propeller-like configuration of one single-handedness throughout the cage-to-COF transformation. The obtained chiral COFs can be further utilized as fluorescence sensors or chiral stationary phases for gas chromatography with high enantioselectivity. The present study thus highlighted the great potential to expand the scope of functional chiral materials via DCC-induced crystal-to-crystal transformation with the chiral memory effect.

Chiral hydroxyl-controlled covalent organic framework-modified stationary phase for chromatographic enantioseparation

Chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs) possess a superior chiral recognition environment, abundant pore configuration, and favorable physicochemical stability. In the post-synthetic chiral modification of COFs, research usually focused on increasing the density of chiral sites as much as possible, and little attention has been paid to the influence of the density of chiral sites on the spatial structure and chiral separation performance of CCOFs. In this article, 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TPB), 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (DHTP), and 2,5-dimethoxyterephthalaldehyde (DMTP) served as the platform molecules to directly establish hydroxyl-controlled COFs through Schiff base condensation reactions. Then the novel chiral selectors 6-deoxy-6-[1-(2-aminoethyl)-3-(4-(4-isocyanatobenzyl)phenyl)urea]-β-cyclodextrin (UB-β-CD) were pended into the micropore structures of COFs via covalent bond for further construction the [UB-β-CD]x-TPB-DMTP COFs (x represents the density of chiral sites). The chiral sites density on [UB-β-CD]x-TPB-DMTP COFs was regulated by changing the construction proportion of DHTP to obtain a satisfactory CCOFs and significantly improve the ability of chiral separation. [UB-β-CD]x-TPB-DMTP COFs were coated on the inner wall of a capillary via a covalently bonding strategy. The prepared open tubular capillary exhibited strong and broad enantioselectivity toward a variety of chiral analytes, including sixteen racemic amino acids and six model chiral drugs. By comparing the outcomes of chromatographic separation, we observed that the density of chiral sites in CCOFs was not positively correlated with their enantiomeric separation performance. The mechanism of chiral recognition [UB-β-CD]x-TPB-DMTP COFs were further demonstrated by molecular docking simulation. This study not only introduces a new high-efficiency member of the COFs-based CSPs family but also demonstrates the enantioseparation potential of CCOFs constructed with traditional post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategy by utilizing the inherent characteristics of porous organic frameworks.

Raising the Asymmetric Catalytic Efficiency of Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks by Tuning the Pore Environment

Chiral covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold considerable promise in the realm of heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis. However, fine-tuning the pore environment to enhance both the activity and stereoselectivity of chiral COFs in such applications remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we have successfully designed and synthesized a series of clover-shaped, hydrazone-linked chiral COFs, each with a varying number of accessible chiral pyrrolidine catalytic sites. Remarkably, the catalytic efficiencies of these COFs in the asymmetric aldol reaction between cyclohexanone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde correlate well with the number of accessible pyrrolidine sites within the frameworks. The COF featuring nearly one pyrrolidine moiety at each nodal point demonstrated excellent reaction yields and enantiomeric excess (ee) values, reaching up to 97 and 83%, respectively. The findings not only underscore the profound impact of a deliberately controlled chiral pore environment on the catalytic efficiencies of COFs but also offer a new perspective for the design and synthesis of advanced chiral COFs for efficient asymmetric catalysis.

Stacked Covalent Organic Ribbons Perpendicular to Graphene Oxide Sheets; a 1D-p-2D Design for Photocatalytic Tandem Reactions

Development of one dimensional covalent organic frameworks (1D-COFs) with potential in light absorption and catalysis is still challenging, due to their rapid interpenetration to form 2D and 3D porous structures. Here we report a successful synthesis of imine-linked 1D covalent organic ribbons (COR), using two simple linear building blocks 1,4-Benzenediamine (Bda) and [2,2'-Bipyridine]-5,5'-dicarbaldehyde (Bpy). The obtained 1D structure with nanorod morphology could keep its physicochemical characteristic properties when it is perpendicular to the surface of graphene oxide (GO) sheets (1D-p-2D structure). Due to an AB π- π stacking and efficient charge transfer between perpendicular 1D COR and GO sheets, the obtained nanocomposite showed strong visible light absorbance (400-700 nm) with coefficient of 4.400 M-1  cm-1 and decreased recombination rate of photogenerated reactive species by 92 %. The strategy of 1D-p-2D light driven system greatly enhanced the photocatalytic activity in practical applications such as both oxidation and hydrogenation tandem reactions to a rate constant of higher than 0.02 min-1 . This study presents the first case of 1D covalent organic polymers grown perpendicularly on a carbon-based layer for boosting electron mobility through the junction between the two components.

Pore Space Partition Synthetic Strategy in Imine-linked Multivariate Covalent Organic Frameworks

Partitioning the pores of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is an attractive strategy for introducing microporosity and achieving new functionality, but it is technically challenging to achieve. Herein, we report a simple strategy for partitioning the micropores/mesopores of multivariate COFs. Our approach relies on the predesign and synthesis of multicomponent COFs through imine condensation reactions with aldehyde groups anchored in the COF pores, followed by inserting additional symmetric building blocks (with C2 or C3 symmetries) as pore partition agents. This approach allowed tetragonal or hexagonal pores to be partitioned into two or three smaller micropores, respectively. The synthesized library of pore-partitioned COFs was then applied for the capture of iodine pollutants (i.e., I2 and CH3I). This rich inventory allowed deep exploration of the relationships between the COF adsorbent composition, pore architecture, and adsorption capacity for I2 and CH3I capture under wide-ranging conditions. Notably, one of our developed pore-partitioned COFs (COF 3-2P) exhibited greatly enhanced dynamic I2 and CH3I adsorption performances compared to its parent COF (COF 3) in breakthrough tests, setting a new benchmark for COF-based adsorbents. Results present an effective design strategy toward functional COFs with tunable pore environments, functions, and properties.

Molecular Co-Catalyst Confined within a Metallacage for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The construction of structurally well-defined supramolecular hosts to accommodate catalytically active species within a cavity is a promising way to address catalyst deactivation. The resulting supramolecular catalysts can significantly improve the utilization of catalytic sites, thereby achieving a highly efficient chemical conversion. In this study, the Co-metalated phthalocyanine (Pc-Co) was successfully confined within a tetragonal prismatic metallacage, leading to the formation of a distinctive type of supramolecular photocatalyst (Pc-Co@Cage). The host-guest architecture of Pc-Co@Cage was unambiguously elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), NMR, and ESI-TOF-MS, revealing that the single cobalt active site can be thoroughly isolated within the space-restricted microenvironment. In addition, we found that Pc-Co@Cage can serve as a homogeneous supramolecular photocatalyst that displays high CO2 to CO conversion in aqueous media under visible light irradiation. This supramolecular photocatalyst exhibits an obvious improvement in activity (TONCO = 4175) and selectivity (SelCO = 92%) relative to the nonconfined Pc-Co catalyst (TONCO = 500, SelCO = 54%). The present strategy provided a rare example for the construction of a highly active, selective, and stable photocatalyst for CO2 reduction through a cavity-confined molecular catalyst within a discrete metallacage.

Sculpting Mesoscopic Helical Chirality into Covalent Organic Framework Nanotubes from Entirely Achiral Building Blocks

The diversification of chirality in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) holds immense promise for expanding their properties and functionality. Herein, we introduce an innovative approach for imparting helical chirality to COFs and fabricating a family of chiral COF nanotubes with mesoscopic helicity from entirely achiral building blocks for the first time. We present an effective 2,3-diaminopyridine-mediated supramolecular templating method, which facilitates the prefabrication of helical imine-linked polymer nanotubes using unprecedented achiral symmetric monomers. Through meticulous optimization of crystallization conditions, these helical polymer nanotubes are adeptly converted into imine-linked COF nanotubes boasting impressive surface areas, while well preserving their helical morphology and chiroptical properties. Furthermore, these helical imine-linked polymers or COFs could be subtly transformed into corresponding more stable and functional helical β-ketoenamine-linked and hydrazone-linked COF nanotubes with transferred circular dichroism via monomer exchange. Notably, despite the involvement of covalent bonding breakage and reorganization, these exchange processes overcome thermodynamic disadvantages, allowing mesoscopic helical chirality to be perfectly preserved. This research highlights the potential of mesoscopic helicity in conferring COFs with favourable chiral properties, providing novel insights into the development of multifunctional COFs in the field of chiral materials chemistry.

Mixed-Linker Chiral 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks with Controlled Layer Stacking for Electrochemical Asymmetric Catalysis

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have undergone extensive research as heterogeneous catalysts for a wide range of significant reactions, but they have not yet been investigated in the realm of electrochemical asymmetric catalysis, despite their recognition as an economical and sustainable strategy for producing enantiopure compounds. Here, we report a mixed-linker strategy to design multicomponent two-dimensional (2D) chiral COFs with tunable layer stacking for highly enantioselective electrocatalysis. By crystallizing mixtures of triamines with and without the MacMillan imidazolidinone catalyst or aryl substituent (ethyl and isopropyl) and a dialdehyde derivative of thieno-[3,2-b]thiophene, we synthesized and structurally characterized a series of three-component homochiral 2D COFs featuring either AA or ABC stacking. The stacking modes that can be synthetically controlled through steric tuning using different aryl substituents affect their chemical stability and electrochemical performance. With the MacMillan catalyst periodically appended on their channels, all three COFs with conductive thiophene moieties can be highly enantioselective and recyclable electrocatalysts for the asymmetric α-arylation of aldehydes, affording alkylated anilines with up to 97% enantiomeric excess by an anodic oxidation/organocatalytic protocol. Presumably due to their higher charge transfer ability, the ABC stacking COFs exhibit improved reactivity compared to the AA stacking analogue. This work therefore advances COFs as electrocatalysts for asymmetric catalysis and may facilitate the design of more redox-active crystalline organic polymers for electrochemical enantioselective processes.

Metal-Free Heterogeneous Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Olefins Promoted by Chiral Frustrated Lewis Pair Framework

The development of metal-free and recyclable catalysts for significant yet challenging transformations of naturally abundant feedstocks has long been sought after. In this work, we contribute a general strategy of combining the rationally designed crystalline covalent organic framework (COF) with a newly developed chiral frustrated Lewis pair (CFLP) to afford chiral frustrated Lewis pair framework (CFLPF), which can efficiently promote the asymmetric olefin hydrogenation in a heterogeneous manner, outperforming the homogeneous CFLP counterpart. Notably, the metal-free CFLPF exhibits superior activity/enantioselectivity in addition to excellent stability/recyclability. A series of in situ spectroscopic studies, kinetic isotope effect measurements, and density-functional theory computational calculations were also performed to gain an insightful understanding of the superior asymmetric hydrogenation catalysis performances of CFLPF. Our work not only increases the versatility of catalysts for asymmetric catalysis but also broadens the reactivity of porous organic materials with the addition of frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry, thereby suggesting a new approach for practical and substantial transformations through the advancement of novel catalysts from both concept and design perspectives.

Paper-based microfluidic system and chiroptical functionalized gold nano-oval for colorimetric detection of L-Tryptophan

"The development and deployment of a practical and portable technology for on-site chiral identification of enantiomers hold immense significance in the fields of medical and biological sciences. Among the essential amino acids, Tryptophan (Trp) plays a crucial role in human metabolism and serves as a diagnostic marker for various metabolic disorders. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach that combines an enantio-selective ZIF-8-His MOF-MIPs packed-bed centrifugal microfluidic system with an enantioselective colorimetric sensor probe. This system is further integrated with smartphone-based on-site data recording. The basis of this colorimetric sensor's operation lies in the controlled morphology and surface passivation of gold nano-ovals (Au-NOs) through DL-Alanine. To confirm the successful synthesis of the chiral recognition elements, we employed various characterization techniques, including FE-SEM, TEM, FTIR, CD, UV-Vis, zeta potential, DLS, and XRD. Our focus was on optimizing operational parameters for the effective separation and determination of L-chiral tryptophan on-site. The sensor exhibited two linear ranges for L-Trp detection: 0-5.42 and 5.42-80.47 mM, with a detection limit of 0.5 mM. The integrated system possesses advantages such as ease of availability, preparation, high stability, desirable selectivity even in the presence of similar biomolecules, and rapid detection capabilities. Furthermore, our method demonstrated successful enantioselective sensing of L-Trp in various biological samples, including human blood plasma, urine, milk, and bovine serum albumin (BSA), yielding promising results. The integrated microfluidic platform follows a "sample-in and answer-out" approach, making it highly applicable in healthcare, environmental monitoring, food safety analysis, and point-of-care testing. The chiral recognition pretreatment assay and self-contained, automated colorimetric detection on the microfluidic disc represent a promising avenue for cutting-edge research in these domains".

Enantioselective adsorption of ibuprofen enantiomers using chiral-active carbon nanoparticles induced S-α-methylbenzylamine

The chiral media is crucial to the chiral recognition and separation of enantiomers. In this study, we report the preparation of novel chiral carbon nanoparticles (CCNPs) via surface passivation using glucose as the carbon source and S-(-)-α-methylbenzylamine as the chiral ligand. The structures of the obtained CCNPs are characterized via FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, DLS, XPS, XRD, TEM, and zeta potential analysis. These CCNPs could be employed as the chiral adsorbent and used for the enantioselective adsorption of the ibuprofen enantiomers. The results demonstrated that the CCNPs could selectively adsorb R-enantiomer from ibuprofen racemate solution and give an enantiomeric excess (e.e.) of about 50% under an optimal adsorption condition. Moreover, the regeneration efficiency of the CCNPs remained above e.e. of 43% after the fifth cycle. The present work confirmed that the prepared CCNPs show great potential in the enantioselective separation of ibuprofen racemate.

Linkage conversions in single-crystalline covalent organic frameworks

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction is a powerful characterization technique that enables the determination of atomic arrangements in crystalline materials. Growing or retaining large single crystals amenable to it has, however, remained challenging with covalent organic frameworks (COFs), especially suffering from post-synthetic modifications. Here we show the synthesis of a flexible COF with interpenetrated qtz topology by polymerization of tetra(phenyl)bimesityl-based tetraaldehyde and tetraamine building blocks. The material is shown to be flexible through its large, anisotropic positive thermal expansion along the c axis (αc = +491 × 10-6 K-1), as well as through a structural transformation on the removal of solvent molecules from its pores. The as-synthesized and desolvated materials undergo single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation by reduction and oxidation of its imine linkages to amine and amide ones, respectively. These redox-induced linkage conversions endow the resulting COFs with improved stability towards strong acid; loading of phosphoric acid leads to anhydrous proton conductivity up to ca. 6.0 × 10-2 S cm-1.

Microfluidic chip and chiroptical gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric sensor for enantioselective detection of L-tryptophan

Herein, we introduce a novel integrated system that merges an enantio-discriminative bio-MOF-packed centrifugal microfluidic chip made from PDMS with a user-friendly on-site colorimetric sensor. This innovative approach enables the precise enantioselective recognition of L-tryptophane (L-Trp). This chiral recognition probe was successfully synthesized through meticulous control of nano-ovals-shaped gold nanoparticles morphology and surface passivation. The operational factor of this methodology was optimized to ensure simplicity, practicality, and efficiency. This optimization led to reduced reagent consumption and instantaneous analytical feedback. The integrated system was effectively applied for enantioselective separation and quantification of L-Trp across an extensive linear range of 50 μM-1.5 mM, impressive limit of detection as low as 15 μM. It is noteworthy that this integrated system demonstrated desirable selectivity even in the presence of similar biomolecules, showcasing its robust performance and rapid detection capability. Understanding Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting of β-Ketoamine COFs through the N-C Site Synergistic Mechanism

Overcoming the sluggish reaction kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a determining factor for the practical application of photocatalysts for overall water splitting. Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) offer an ideal platform for catalyst design in the field of overall water splitting for their exceptional chemical tunability and high efficiency of light capture. In this work, four β-ketoamine 2D-COFs, consisting of 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) groups and different linkers with pyridine segments, were constructed and optimized. By means of first-principles calculations, the band structures, free energy changes of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and OER, and charge density distributions were calculated and investigated systemically to discuss the visible-light response, overall water splitting activities on active sites, and the characteristic of charge transfer and separation. The protonated pyridine N derived from the double-H2O closed-ring H-bond adsorption model could efficiently induce N-C sites' synergistic effect between pyridine N and its ortho-position C to minimize the OER energy barrier and to enhance the charge transfer and separation. A N-C site synergistic mechanism has been proposed to provide a comprehensive explanation for the experimental results and a new strategy to design novel 2D-COF photocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Highly Enhancing CO2 Photoreduction by Metallization of an Imidazole-linked Robust Covalent Organic Framework

Converting CO2 into value-added chemicals to solve the issues caused by carbon emission is promising but challenging. Herein, by embedding metal ions (Co2+ , Ni2+ , Cu2+ , and Zn2+ ) into an imidazole-linked robust photosensitive covalent organic framework (PyPor-COF), effective photocatalysts for CO2 conversion are rationally designed and constructed. Characterizations display that all of the metallized PyPor-COFs (M-PyPor-COFs) display remarkably high enhancement in their photochemical properties. Photocatalysis reactions reveal that the Co-metallized PyPor-COF (Co-PyPor-COF) achieves a CO production rate as high as up to 9645 µmol g-1 h-1 with a selectivity of 96.7% under light irradiation, which is more than 45 times higher than that of the metal-free PyPor-COF, while Ni-metallized PyPor-COF (Ni-PyPor-COF) can further tandem catalyze the generated CO to CH4 with a production rate of 463.2 µmol g-1 h-1 . Experimental analyses and theory calculations reveal that their remarkable performance enhancement on CO2 photoreduction should be attributed to the incorporated metal sites in the COF skeleton, which promotes the adsorption and activation of CO2 and the desorption of generated CO and even reduces the reaction energy barrier for the formation of different intermediates. This work demonstrates that by metallizing photoactive COFs, effective photocatalysts for CO2 conversion can be achieved.

Chiral probes for biosensing

Chiral inorganic nanomaterials have emerged as a highly promising area of research in nanoscience due to their exceptional light-matter interaction and vast potential applications in chiral sensing, asymmetric catalysis, enantiomer separation, and negative-index materials. We present an overview of the latest advances in chiral inorganic nanomaterials including chiral individual nanoparticles, chiral assemblies, and chiral film-based sensors over the past ten years. Additionally, we discuss the challenges and future perspectives for developing chiral nanomaterials in biosensing applications.

Kilogram-Scale Fabrication of a Robust Olefin-Linked Covalent Organic Framework for Separating Ethylene from a Ternary C2 Hydrocarbon Mixture

One-step adsorptive purification of ethylene (C2H4) from a ternary mixture of acetylene (C2H2), C2H4, and ethane (C2H6) by a single material is of great importance but challenging in the petrochemical industry. Herein, a chemically robust olefin-linked covalent organic framework (COF), NKCOF-62, is designed and synthesized by a melt polymerization method employing tetramethylpyrazine and terephthalaldehyde as cheap monomers. This method avoids most of the disadvantages of classical solvothermal methods, which enable the cost-effective kilogram fabrication of olefin-linked COFs in one pot. Furthermore, NKCOF-62 shows remarkably selective adsorption of C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4 thanks to its unique pore environments and suitable pore size. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that polymer-grade C2H4 can be directly obtained from C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 (1/1/1) ternary mixtures through a single separation process. Notably, NKCOF-62 is the first demonstration of the potential to use COFs for C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 separation, which provides a blueprint for the design and construction of robust COFs for industrial gas separations.

Fabricating s-collidine-derived vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks for photocatalysis

Research into vinyl-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has grown significantly in recent years due to various attractive properties. Herein, we design and synthesize two highly crystalline and stable 2,4,6-collidine-derived vinylene-linked 2D COFs. Both COFs can act as efficient photocatalysts to facilitate visible-light-driven aerobic oxidation. The TM-TBT-COF was observed to exhibit superior activity and recyclability owing to its excellent semiconducting properties.

Recent development of chiral ionic liquids for enantioseparation in liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis: A review

Ionic liquids (ILs), which are salts in a molten state below 100 °C, have become a hot topic of research in various fields because of their negligible vapour pressure, high thermal stability, and tunable viscosity. Chiral ionic liquids (CILs) can be applied in chromatography and capillary electrophoresis fields to improve the performance of enantiomeric separation, such as chiral stationary phases (CSPs) and mobile phase additives in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); CSPs in gas chromatography (GC); and background electrolyte additives (BGE), chiral ligands and chiral selectors (CSs) in capillary electrophoresis (CE). This review focuses on the applications of CILs in HPLC and CE for the separation of enantiomers in the past five years. The mechanism for separating enantiomers was explained, and the prospect of the application of CILs in chiral liquid chromatography (LC) and CE analysis was also discussed.

Chiral Materials: Progress, Applications, and Prospects

Chirality is a universal phenomenon in molecular and biological systems, denoting an asymmetric configurational property where an object cannot be superimposed onto its mirror image by any kind of translation or rotation, which is ubiquitous on the scale from neutrinos to spiral galaxies. Chirality plays a very important role in the life system. Many biological molecules in the life body show chirality, such as the "codebook" of the earth's biological diversity-DNA, nucleic acid, etc. Intriguingly, living organisms hierarchically consist of homochiral building blocks, for example, l-amino acids and d-sugars with unknown reason. When molecules with chirality interact with these chiral factors, only one conformation favors the positive development of life, that is, the chiral host environment can only selectively interact with chiral molecules of one of the conformations. The differences in chiral interactions are often manifested by chiral recognition, mutual matching, and interactions with chiral molecules, which means that the stereoselectivity of chiral molecules can produce changes in pharmacodynamics and pathology. Here, the latest investigations are summarized including the construction and applications of chiral materials based on natural small molecules as chiral source, natural biomacromolecules as chiral sources, and the material synthesized by design as a chiral source.

Bottom-Up Design of Photoactive Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks for Visible-Light-Driven Asymmetric Catalysis

The development of chiral covalentorganic framework catalysts (CCOFs) to synthesize enantiopure organic compounds is crucial and highly desirable in synthetic chemistry. Photocatalytic asymmetric reactions based on CCOFs are eco-friendly and sustainable while they are still elaborate. In this work, we report a general bottom-up strategy to successfully synthesize several photoactive CCOFX (X = 1-5 and 1-Boc). The photoactive porphyrin building blocks are selected as knots and various secondary-amine-based chiral catalytic centers are immobilized on the pore walls of CCOFX through a rational design of benzoimidazole linkers. The porphyrin units act as light-harvesting antennae to generate photo-induced charge carriers for the activation of bromide during the photocatalytic asymmetric alkylation of aldehydes. Meanwhile, various aldehydes are activated by the chiral secondary amine to form the target products with a high yield (up to 97%) and ee value (up to 93%). The results significantly expand the scope to predesign CCOF photocatalysts for visible-light-driven asymmetric catalysis.

From Supramolecular Organic Cages to Porous Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhancing Iodine Adsorption Capability by Fully Exposed Nitrogen-Rich Sites

In order to overcome the limitations of supramolecular organic cages for their incomplete accessibility of active sites in the solid state and uneasy recyclability in liquid solution, herein a nitrogen-rich organic cage is rationally linked into framework systems and four isoreticular covalent organic frameworks (COFs), that is, Cage-TFB-COF, Cage-NTBA-COF, Cage-TFPB-COF, and Cage-TFPT-COF, are successfully synthesized. Structure determination reveals that they are all high-quality crystalline materials derived from the eclipsed packing of related isoreticular two-dimensional frameworks. Since the nitrogen-rich sites usually have a high affinity toward iodine species, iodine adsorption investigations are carried out and the results show that all of them display an enhancement in iodine adsorption capacities. Especially, Cage-NTBA-COF exhibits an iodine adsorption capacity of 304 wt%, 14-fold higher than the solid sample packed from the cage itself. The strong interactions between the nitrogen-rich sites and the adsorbed iodine species are revealed by spectral analyses. This work demonstrates that, utilizing the reticular chemistry strategy to extend the close-packed supramolecular organic cages into crystalline porous framework solids, their inherent properties can be greatly exploited for targeted applications.

3D Covalent Organic Framework as a Metastable Intermediate in the Formation of a Double-Stranded Helical Covalent Polymer

The design and development of intricate artificial architectures have been pursued for decades. Helical covalent polymer (HCP) was recently reported as an unexpected topology that consists of chiral 1D polymers assembled through weak hydrogen bonds from achiral building blocks. However, many questions remained about the formation, driving force, and the single-handedness observed in each crystal. In this work, we reveal a metastable, racemic, fully covalently cross-linked, 3D covalent organic framework (COF) as an intermediate in the early stage of polymerization, which slowly converts into single-handed HCP double helices through partial fragmentation and self-sorting with the aid of a series of hydrogen bonding. Our work provides an intriguing example where weak noncovalent bonds serve as the determining factor of the overall product structure and facilitate the formation of a sophisticated polymeric architecture.
