The rise of metal-organic polyhedra

Self-Assembly of Chiral Porous Metal-Organic Polyhedra from Trianglsalen Macrocycles

Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) can exhibit tunable porosity and functionality, suggesting potential for applications such as molecular separations. MOPs are typically constructed by the bottom-up multicomponent self-assembly of organic ligands and metal ions, and the final functionality can be hard to program. Here, we used trianglsalen macrocycles as preorganized building blocks to assemble octahedral-shaped MOPs. The resultant MOPs inherit most of the preorganized properties of the macrocyclic ligands, including their well-defined cavities and chirality. As a result, the porosity in the MOPs could be tuned by modifying the structure of the macrocycle building blocks. Using this strategy, we could systematically enlarge the size of the MOPs from 26.3 to 32.1 Å by increasing the macrocycle size. The family of MOPs shows experimental surface areas of up to 820 m2/g, and they are stable in water. One of these MOPs can efficiently separate the rare gases Xe from Kr because the prefabricated macrocyclic windows of MOPs can be modified to sit at the Xe/Kr size cutoff range.

High-order layered self-assembled multicavity metal--organic capsules and anti-cooperative host-multi-guest chemistry

The construction and application of metal-organic cages with accessible internal cavities have witnessed rapid development, however, the precise synthesis of complex metal-organic capsules with multiple cavities and achievement of multi-guest encapsulation, and further in-depth comprehension of host-multi-guest recognition remain a great challenge. Just like building LEGO blocks, herein, we have constructed a series of high-order layered metal-organic architectures of generation n (n = 1/2/3/4 is also the number of cavities) by multi-component coordination-driven self-assembly using porphyrin-containing tetrapodal ligands (like plates), multiple parallel-podal ligands (like clamps) and metal ions (like nodes). Importantly, these high-order assembled structures possessed different numbers of rigid and separate cavities formed by overlapped porphyrin planes with specific gaps. The host-guest experiments and convincing characterization proved that these capsules G2-G4 could serve as host structures to achieve multi-guest recognition and unprecedentedly encapsulate up to four C60 molecules. More interestingly, these capsules revealed negative cooperation behavior in the process of multi-guest recognition, which provides a new platform to further study complicated host-multi-guest interaction in the field of supramolecular chemistry.

Structural Diversity in Ga/In-Hydroxamate Metal-Organic Materials

Developing metal-organic materials (MOMs) with chemical robustness is a prerequisite to exploring their intriguing properties and applications. As part of a continuing effort to construct robust MOMs featuring chelated building units, here we introduce a "bent" thiophene-2,5-dihydroxamate ligand with multiple intrinsic conformations when it is used as a chelating linkage. This approach should further diversify the coordination chemistry in hydroxamate-based MOM structures without compromising the stability. In combination with Group 13 metals Ga/In to ensure homoleptic metal vertices, we report the successful crystallization of four MOMs with diverse structures and dimensionalities: SUM-81 as a 0D metal-organic polyhedron (MOP), SUM-82 as a 2D MOF with an fes topology, SUM-83 and SUM-84 as distinct 1D coordination polymers with shapes mimic stairs and mesh tubes, respectively. As these structures indeed contain the aforementioned different ligand conformations and combinations thereof, these results expand our understanding of the coordination chemistry of hydroxamates. To demonstrate the potential applicability of hydroxamate-chelated robust MOMs, the permanently porous SUM-81 MOP was successfully incorporated in a series of mixed matrix membranes for CO2/N2 separation, showing impressive performances.

Unlocking High Porosity: Post-Synthetic Solvothermal Treatment of Cu-Paddlewheel Based Metal-Organic Cages

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) have garnered significant attention due to their unique discrete structures, intrinsic porosity, designability, and tailorability. However, weak inter-cage interactions, such as van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding can cause solid-state MOCs to lose structural integrity during desolvation, leading to the loss of porosity. In this work, a novel strategy to retain the permanent porosity of Cu-paddlewheel-based MOCs, enabling their use as heterogeneous catalysts is presented. Post-synthetic solvothermal treatments in non-coordinating solvents, mesitylene, and p-xylene, effectively preserve the packing structures of solvent-evacuated MOCs while preventing cage agglomeration. The resulting MOCs exhibit an exceptional N2 sorption capacity, with a high surface area (SBET = 1934 m2 g-1 for MOP-23), which is among the highest reported for porous MOCs. Intriguingly, while the solvothermal treatment reduced Cu(II) to Cu(I) in the Cu-paddlewheel clusters, the MOCs with mixed-valenced Cu(I)/Cu(II) maintained their crystallinity and permanent porosity. The catalytic activities of these MOCs are successfully examined in copper(I)-catalyzed hydrative amide synthesis, highlighting the prospect of MOCs as versatile reaction platforms.

Supramolecular hydrogen-bonded networks formed from copper(II) carboxylate dimers

The well-known copper carboxylate dimer, with four carboxylate ligands extending outwards towards the corners of a square, has been employed to generate a series of crystalline compounds. In particular, this work centres on the use of the 4-hydroxybenzoate anion (Hhba-) and its deprotonated phenolate form 4-oxidobenzoate (hba2-) to obtain complexes with the general formula [Cu2(Hhba)4-x(hba)xL2-y]x-, where L is an axial coligand (including solvent molecules), x = 0, 1 or 2, and y = 0 or 1. In some cases, short hydrogen bonds result in complexes which may be represented as [Cu2(Hhba)2(H0.5hba)2L2]-. The main focus of the investigation is on the formation of a variety of extended networks through hydrogen bonding and, in some crystals, coordinate bonds when bridging coligands (L) are employed. Crystals of [Cu2(Hhba)4(dioxane)2]·4(dioxane) consist of the expected Cu dimer with the Hhba- anions forming hydrogen bonds to 1,4-dioxane molecules which block network formation. In the case of crystals of composition [Et4N][Cu2(Hhba)2(H0.5hba)2(CH3OH)(H2O)]·2(dioxane), Li[Cu2(Hhba)2(H0.5hba)2(H2O)2]·3(dioxane)·4H2O and [Cu2(Hhba)2(H0.5hba)2(H0.5DABCO)2]·3CH3OH (DABCO is 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane), square-grid hydrogen-bonded networks are generated in which the complex serves as one type of 4-connecting node, whilst a second 4-connecting node is a hydrogen-bonding motif assembled from four phenol/phenolate groups. Another two-dimensional (2D) network based upon a related square-grid structure is formed in the case of [Et4N]2[Cu2(Hhba)2(hba)2(dioxane)2][Cu2(Hhba)4(dioxane)(H2O)]·CH3OH. In [Cu2(Hhba)4(H2O)2]·2(Et4NNO3), a square-grid structure is again apparent, but, in this case, a pair of nitrate anions, along with four phenolic groups and a pair of water molecules, combine to form a second type of 4-connecting node. When 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (bdn, `proton sponge') is used as a base, another square-grid network is generated, i.e. [Hbdn]2[Cu2(Hhba)2(hba)2(H2O)2]·3(dioxane)·H2O, but with only the copper dimer complex serving as a 4-connecting node. Complex three-dimensional networks are formed in [Cu2(Hhba)4(O-bipy)]·H2O and [Cu2(Hhba)4(O-bipy)2]·2(dioxane), where the potentially bridging 4,4'-bipyridine N,N'-dioxide (O-bipy) ligand is employed. Rare cases of mixed carboxylate copper dimer complexes were obtained in the cases of [Cu2(Hhba)3(OAc)(dioxane)]·3.5(dioxane) and [Cu2(Hhba)2(OAc)2(DABCO)2]·10(dioxane), with each structure possessing a 2D network structure. The final compound reported is a simple hydrogen-bonded chain of composition (H0.5DABCO)(H1.5hba), formed from the reaction of H2hba and DABCO.

Giant oligomeric porous cage-based molecules

Most reported porous materials are either extended networks or monomeric discrete cavities; indeed, porous structures of intermediate size have scarcely been explored. Herein, we present the stepwise linkage of discrete porous metal-organic cages or polyhedra (MOPs) into oligomeric structures with a finite number of MOP units. The synthesis of these new oligomeric porous molecules entails the preparation of 1-connected (1-c) MOPs with only one available azide reactive site on their surface. The azide-terminated 1-c MOP is linked through copper(i)-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition click chemistry with additional alkyne-terminated 1-c MOPs, 4-c clusters, or 24-c MOPs to yield three classes of giant oligomeric molecules: dimeric, tetrameric, or satellite-like, respectively. Importantly, all the giant molecules that we synthesised are soluble in water and permanently porous in the solid state.

Supramolecular Complexation Reinforced Polymer Frustrated Packing: Controllable Dual Porosity for Improved Permselectivity of Coordination Nanocage Mixed Matrix Membranes

The developments of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are severely hindered by the complex inter-phase interaction and the resulting poor utilization of inorganics' microporosity. Herein, a dual porosity framework is constructed in MMMs to enhance the accessibility of inorganics' microporosity to external gas molecules for the effective application of microporosity for gas separation. Nanocomposite organogels are first prepared from the supramolecular complexation of rigid polymers and 2 nm microporous coordination nanocages (CNCs). The network structures can be maintained with microporous features after solvent removal originated from the rigid nature of polymers, and the strong coordination and hydrogen bond between the two components. Moreover, the strong supramolecular attraction reinforces the frustrated packing of the rigid polymers on CNC surface, leading to polymer networks' extrinsic pores and the interconnection of CNCs' micro-cavities for the fast gas transportation. The gas permeabilities of the MMMs are 869 times for H2 and 1099 times for CO2 higher than those of pure polymers. The open metal sites from nanocage also contribute to the enhanced gas selectivity and the overall performance surpasses 2008 H2/CO2 Robeson upper bound. The supramolecular complexation reinforced packing frustration strategy offers a simple and practical solution to achieve improved gas permselectivity in MMMs.

A Porphyrin-Based 3D Metal-Organic Framework Featuring [Cu8Cl6]10+ Cluster Secondary Building Units: Synthesis, Structure Elucidation, Anion Exchange, and Peroxidase-Like Activity

Herein, we report a rare example of cationic three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (MOF) of [Cu5Cl3(TMPP)]Cl5 ⋅ xSol (denoted as Cu-TMPP; H2TMPP=meso-tetrakis (6-methylpyridin-3-yl) porphyrin; xSol=encapsulated solvates) supported by [Cu8Cl6]10+ cluster secondary building units (SBUs) wherein the eight faces of the Cl--based octahedron are capped by eight Cu2+. Surface-area analysis indicated that Cu-TMPP features a mesoporous structure and its solvate-like Cl- counterions can be exchanged by BF4 -, PF6 -, and NO3 -. The polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated Cu-TMPP (denoted as Cu-TMPP-PVP) demonstrated good ROS generating ability, producing ⋅OH in the absence of light (peroxidase-like activity) and 1O2 on light irradiation (650 nm; 25 mW cm-2). This work highlights the potential of Cu-TMPP as a functional carrier of anionic guests such as drugs, for the combination therapy of cancer and other diseases.

Nanoscale Dodecahedral and Fullerene-Type Organoboroxine and Borazine Cages from Planar Building Units

Boroxine- and borazine-cage analogs to C20, C60, and C70 were calculated and compared in terms of structure, strain indicators, and physical properties relevant to nanoscale applications. The results show C60 and C70 type cages are less strained than the smaller congener, primarily due to minimized bending in the B-arylene-B segments. The smallest cage calculated has a diameter of 2.4 nm, which increases up to 4.9 nm by either variation of the polyhedron (C20 < C60 < C70-type cage) or organic spacer elongation between boron centers. All calculated cages are porous (apertures ranging from 0.6 to 1.9 nm). Molecular electrostatic potential and Hirshfeld population analysis revealed both nucleophilic and electrophilic sites in the interior and exterior cage surfaces. HOMO-LUMO gaps range from 3.98 to 4.89 eV and 5.10-5.18 eV for the boroxine- and borazine-cages, respectively. Our findings provide insights into the design and properties of highly porous boroxine and borazine cages for nanoscience.

Coordination cages integrated into swelling poly(ionic liquid)s for guest encapsulation and separation

Coordination cages have been widely reported to bind a variety of guests, which are useful for chemical separation. Although the use of cages in the solid state benefits the recycling, the flexibility, dynamicity, and metal-ligand bond reversibility of solid-state cages are poor, preventing efficient guest encapsulation. Here we report a type of coordination cage-integrated solid materials that can be swelled into gel in water. The material is prepared through incorporation of an anionic FeII4L6 cage as the counterion of a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (MOC@PIL). The immobilized cages within MOC@PILs have been found to greatly affect the swelling ability of MOC@PILs and thus the mechanical properties. Importantly, upon swelling, the uptake of water provides an ideal microenvironment within the gels for the immobilized cages to dynamically move and flex that leads to excellent solution-level guest binding performances. This concept has enabled the use of MOC@PILs as efficient adsorbents for the removal of pollutants from water and for the purification of toluene and cyclohexane. Importantly, MOC@PILs can be regenerated through a deswelling strategy along with the recycling of the extracted guests.

Humidity-Induced Self-Oscillating and Self-Healing Hypercrosslinked Metal-Organic Polyhedra Membranes

Designing autonomously oscillating materials is highly desirable for emerging smart material fields but challenging. Herein, a type of hypercrosslinked metal-organic polyhedra (HCMOPs) membranes formed by covalent crosslinking of boronic acid-modified Zr-based MOPs with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are rationally designed. In these membranes, MOPs serve as high-connectivity nodes and provide dynamic borate bonds with PVA in hypercrosslinked networks, which can be broken/formed reversibly upon the stimulus of water vapor. The humidity response characteristic of HCMOPs promotes their self-oscillating and self-healing properties. HCMOP membranes can realize a self-oscillating property above the water surface even after loading a cargo that is 1.5 times the weight of the membrane due to the fast adsorption and desorption kinetics. Finally, the HCMOP actuator can realize energy conversion from mechanical energy into electricity when coupled with a piezoelectric membrane. This work not only paves a new avenue to construct MOP-polymer hybrid materials but also expands the application scopes of MOPs for smart actuation devices.

Bifunctional Metal-Organic Nanoballs Featuring Lewis Acidic and Basic Sites as a New Platform for One-Pot Tandem Catalysis

The design and synthesis of polyhedra using coordination-driven self-assembly has been an intriguing research area for synthetic chemists. Metal-organic polyhedra are a class of intricate molecular architectures that have garnered significant attention in the literature due to their diverse structures and potential applications. Hereby, we report Cu-MOP, a bifunctional metal-organic cuboctahedra built using 2,6-dimethylpyridine-3,5-dicarboxylic acid and copper acetate at room temperature. The presence of both Lewis basic pyridine groups and Lewis acidic copper sites imparts catalytic activity to Cu-MOP for the tandem one-pot deacetalization-Knoevenagel/Henry reactions. The effect of solvent system and time duration on the yields of the reactions was studied, and the results illustrate the promising potential of these metal-organic cuboctahedra, also known as nanoballs for applications in catalysis.

Expanding the Reticular Chemistry Building Block Library toward Highly Connected Nets: Ultraporous MOFs Based on 18-Connected Ternary, Trigonal Prismatic Superpolyhedra

The chemistry of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) continues to expand rapidly, providing materials with diverse structures and properties. The reticular chemistry approach, where well-defined structural building blocks are combined together to form crystalline open framework solids, has greatly accelerated the discovery of new and important materials. However, its full potential toward the rational design of MOFs relies on the availability of highly connected building blocks because these greatly reduce the number of possible structures. Toward this, building blocks with connectivity greater than 12 are highly desirable but extremely rare. We report here the discovery of novel 18-connected, trigonal prismatic, ternary building blocks (tbb's) and their assembly into unique MOFs, denoted as Fe-tbb-MOF-x (x: 1, 2, 3), with hierarchical micro- and mesoporosity. The remarkable tbb is an 18-c supertrigonal prism, with three points of extension at each corner, consisting of triangular (3-c) and rectangular (4-c) carboxylate-based organic linkers and trigonal prismatic [Fe3(μ3-Ο)(-COO)6]+ clusters. The tbb's are linked together by an 18-c cluster made of 4-c ligands and a crystallographically distinct Fe3(μ3-Ο) trimer, forming overall a 3-D (3,4,4,6,6)-c five nodal net. The hierarchical, highly porous nature of Fe-tbb-MOF-x (x: 1, 2, 3) was confirmed by recording detailed sorption isotherms of Ar, CH4, and CO2 at 87, 112, and 195 K, respectively, revealing an ultrahigh BET area (4263-4847 m2 g-1) and pore volume (1.95-2.29 cm3 g-1). Because of the observed ultrahigh porosities, the H2 and CH4 storage properties of Fe-tbb-MOF-x were investigated, revealing well-balanced high gravimetric and volumetric deliverable capacities for cryoadsorptive H2 storage (11.6 wt %/41.4 g L-1, 77 K/100 bar-160 K/5 bar), as well as CH4 storage at near ambient temperatures (367 mg g-1/160 cm3 STP cm-3, 5-100 bar at 298 K), placing these materials among the top performing MOFs. The present work opens new directions to apply reticular chemistry for the construction of novel MOFs with tunable porosities based on contracted or expanded tbb analogues.

Bridging the Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis by Supramolecular Metal-Organic Cages with Varied Packing Modes

Integrating the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis has proved to be an optimal strategy for developing catalytic systems with high efficiency, selectivity, and recoverability. Supramolecular metal-organic cages (MOCs), assembled by the coordination of metal ions with organic linkers into discrete molecules, have performed solvent processability due to their tunable packing modes, endowing them with the potential to act as homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysts in different solvent systems. Here, the design and synthesis of a series of stable {Cu3} cluster-based tetrahedral MOCs with varied packing structures are reported. These MOCs, as homogeneous catalysts, not only show high catalytic activity and selectivity regardless of substrate size during the CO2 cycloaddition reaction, but also can be easily recovered from the reaction media through separating products and co-catalysts by one-step work-up. This is because that these MOCs have varied solubilities in different solvents due to the tunable packing of MOCs in the solid state. Moreover, the entire catalytic reaction system is very clean, and the purity of cyclic carbonates is as high as 97% without further purification. This work provides a unique strategy for developing novel supramolecular catalysts that can be used for homogeneous catalysis and recycled in a heterogeneous manner.

Breathing Metal-Organic Frameworks Supported by an Arsenic-Bridged 4,4'-Bipyridine Ligand

Bent ligands bridged by heteroatoms have drawn significant interest as supramolecular coordination architectures. Traditionally, divalent group 16 elements are preferred over trivalent group 15 elements because of the anticipated steric hindrance. In this study, we explore metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on dipyridinoarsoles (DPAs), 4,4'-bipyridines bridged with an arsenic atom. An MOF with methyl-substituted DPA collapsed upon solvent removal, whereas that with phenyl-substituted DPA demonstrated breathing behavior due to guest molecule adsorption/desorption. In contrast, MOFs using the phosphorus analogue dipyridinophosphole exhibit inferior adsorption and lack breathing behavior. This is the first study to investigate the interplay among substituents, bridging elements, and dynamic behavior in MOFs using bent group 15 ligands.

Lipid vesicle-based molecular robots

A molecular robot, which is a system comprised of one or more molecular machines and computers, can execute sophisticated tasks in many fields that span from nanomedicine to green nanotechnology. The core parts of molecular robots are fairly consistent from system to system and always include (i) a body to encapsulate molecular machines, (ii) sensors to capture signals, (iii) computers to make decisions, and (iv) actuators to perform tasks. This review aims to provide an overview of approaches and considerations to develop molecular robots. We first introduce the basic technologies required for constructing the core parts of molecular robots, describe the recent progress towards achieving higher functionality, and subsequently discuss the current challenges and outlook. We also highlight the applications of molecular robots in sensing biomarkers, signal communications with living cells, and conversion of energy. Although molecular robots are still in their infancy, they will unquestionably initiate massive change in biomedical and environmental technology in the not too distant future.

Improving the gas sorption capacity in lantern-type metal-organic polyhedra by a scrambled cage method

The synthesis of multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a well-known method for increasing the complexity of porous frameworks. In these materials, the structural differences of the ligands used in the synthesis are sufficiently subtle that they can each occupy the same site in the framework. However, multivariate or ligand scrambling approaches are rarely used in the synthesis of porous metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) - the molecular equivalent of MOFs - despite the potential to retain a unique intrinsic pore from the individual cage while varying the extrinsic porosity of the material. Herein we directly synthesise scrambled cages across two families of lantern-type MOPs and find contrasting effects on their gas sorption properties. In one family, the scrambling approach sees a gradual increase in the BET surface area with the maximum and minimum uptakes associated with the two pure homoleptic cages. In the other, the scrambled materials display improved surface areas with respect to both of the original, homoleptic cages. Through analysis of the gas sorption isotherms, we attribute this effect to the balance of micro- and mesoporosity within the materials, which varies as a result of the scrambling approach. The gas uptake of the materials presented here underscores the tunability of cages that springs from their combination of intrinsic, extrinsic, micro- and meso-porosities.

A two-dimensional metal-organic framework assembled from scandium-based cages for the selective capture of sulfur hexafluoride

Herein, we report the synthesis of a two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF), assembled from octahedral metal-organic cages featuring phenanthroline-based carboxylate linkers and μ3-oxo-centered trinuclear Sc(III) inorganic building blocks. We study the performance of this MOF towards the capture of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). On account of its structural features and porous nature, this MOF displays an SF6 uptake capacity of 0.92 mmol g-1 at 0.1 bar and an isosteric heat of adsorption of about 30.7 kJ mol-1 for SF6, illustrating its potential application for the selective capture of SF6 from N2. In addition, we study the adsorptive binding mechanism of SF6 and N2 inside this MOF via molecular simulations.

Designing External Pores of Aluminum Oxo Polyhedrons for Efficient Iodine Capture

Although metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) expansion has been studied to date, it is still a rare occurrence for their porous intermolecular assembly for iodine capture. The major limitation is the lack of programmable and controllable methods for effectively constructing and utilizing the exterior cavities. Herein, the goal of programmable porous intermolecular assembly is realized in the first family of aluminum oxo polyhedrons (AlOPs) using ligands with directional H-bonding donor/acceptor pairs and auxiliary alcohols as structural regulation sites. The approach has the advantage of avoiding the use of expensive edge-directed ditopic and face-directed tritopic ligands in the general synthesis strategy of MOPs. Combining theoretical calculations and experiments, the intrinsic relationship is revealed between alcohol ligands and the growth mechanism of AlOPs. The maximum I2 uptake based on the mass gain during sorption corresponds to 2.35 g g-1 , representing the highest reported I2 sorption by an MOP. In addition, it can be easily regenerated and maintained the iodine sorption capacity, revealing its further potential application. This method of constructing stable and programmable porous materials will provide a new way to solve problems such as radionuclide capture.

Heterometallic cages: synthesis and applications

High symmetry metallosupramolecular architectures (MSAs) have been exploited for a range of applications including molecular recognition, catalysis and drug delivery. Recently there have been increasing efforts to enhance those applications by generating reduced symmetry MSAs. While there are several emerging methods for generating lower symmetry MSAs, this tutorial review examines the general methods used for synthesizing heterometallic MSAs with a particular focus on heterometallic cages. Additionally, the intrinsic properties of the cages and their potential emerging applications as host-guest systems and reaction catalysts are described.

Spatiotemporal Studies of Soluble Inorganic Nanostructures with X-rays and Neutrons

This Review addresses the use of X-ray and neutron scattering as well as X-ray absorption to describe how inorganic nanostructured materials assemble, evolve, and function in solution. We first provide an overview of techniques and instrumentation (both large user facilities and benchtop). We review recent studies of soluble inorganic nanostructure assembly, covering the disciplines of materials synthesis, processes in nature, nuclear materials, and the widely applicable fundamental processes of hydrophobic interactions and ion pairing. Reviewed studies cover size regimes and length scales ranging from sub-Ångström (coordination chemistry and ion pairing) to several nanometers (molecular clusters, i.e. polyoxometalates, polyoxocations, and metal-organic polyhedra), to the mesoscale (supramolecular assembly processes). Reviewed studies predominantly exploit 1) SAXS/WAXS/SANS (small- and wide-angle X-ray or neutron scattering), 2) PDF (pair-distribution function analysis of X-ray total scattering), and 3) XANES and EXAFS (X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure, respectively). While the scattering techniques provide structural information, X-ray absorption yields the oxidation state in addition to the local coordination. Our goal for this Review is to provide information and inspiration for the inorganic/materials science communities that may benefit from elucidating the role of solution speciation in natural and synthetic processes.

Multimodal Therapeutic Platforms Based on Self-Assembled Metallacycles/Metallacages for Cancer Radiochemotherapy

Discrete organometallic complexes with defined structures are proceeding rapidly in combating malignant tumors due to their multipronged treatment modalities. Many innovative superiorities, such as high antitumor activity, extremely low systemic toxicity, active targeting ability, and enhanced cellular uptake, make them more competent for clinical applications than individual precursors. In particular, coordination-induced regulation of luminescence and photophysical properties of organic light-emitting ligands has demonstrated significant potential in the timely evaluation of therapeutic efficacy by bioimaging and enabled synergistic photodynamic therapy (PDT) or photothermal therapy (PTT). This review highlights instructive examples of multimodal radiochemotherapy platforms for cancer ablation based on self-assembled metallacycles/metallacages, which would be classified by functions in a progressive manner. Finally, the essential demands and some plausible prospects in this field for cancer therapy are also presented.

Investigating the Cell Entry Mechanism, Disassembly, and Toxicity of the Nanocage PCC-1: Insights into Its Potential as a Drug Delivery Vehicle

The porous coordination cage PCC-1 represents a new platform potentially useful for the cellular delivery of drugs with poor cell permeability and solubility. PCC-1 is a metal-organic polyhedron constructed from zinc metal ions and organic ligands through coordination bonds. PCC-1 possesses an internal cavity that is suitable for drug encapsulation. To better understand the biocompatibility of PCC-1 with human cells, the cell entry mechanism, disassembly, and toxicity of the nanocage were investigated. PCC-1 localizes in the nuclei and cytoplasm within minutes upon incubation with cells, independent of endocytosis and cargo, suggesting direct plasma membrane translocation of the nanocage carrying its guest in its internal cavity. Furthermore, the rates of cell entry correlate to extracellular concentrations, indicating that PCC-1 is likely diffusing passively through the membrane despite its relatively large size. Once inside cells, PCC-1 disintegrates into zinc metal ions and ligands over a period of several hours, each component being cleared from cells within 1 day. PCC-1 is relatively safe for cells at low micromolar concentrations but becomes inhibitory to cell proliferation and toxic above a concentration or incubation time threshold. However, cells surviving these conditions can return to homeostasis 3-5 days after exposure. Overall, these findings demonstrate that PCC-1 enters live cells by crossing biological membranes spontaneously. This should prove useful to deliver drugs that lack this capacity on their own, provided that the dosage and exposure time are controlled to avoid toxicity.

Retrosynthetic Analysis Applied to Clip-off Chemistry: Synthesis of Four Rh(II)-Based Complexes as Proof-of-Concept

Clip-off Chemistry is a synthetic strategy that our group previously developed to obtain new molecules and materials through selective cleavage of bonds. Herein, we report recent work to expand Clip-off Chemistry by introducing into it a retrosynthetic analysis step that, based on virtual extension of the products through cleavable bonds, enables one to define the required precursor materials. As proof-of-concept, we have validated our new approach by synthesising and characterising four aldehyde-functionalised Rh(II)-based complexes: a homoleptic cluster; a cis-disubstituted paddlewheel cluster; a macrocycle; and a crown.

Efficient water-based purification of metal-organic polyhedra by centrifugal ultrafiltration

An efficient water-based purification strategy for metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) using commercially available centrifugal ultrafiltration membranes was developed. Having a diameter above 3 nm, MOPs were almost fully retained by the filters, while free ligands and other impurities were washed away. MOP retention also enabled efficient counter-ion exchange. This method paves the way for the application of MOPs with biological systems.

Porous supramolecular gels produced by reversible self-gelation of ruthenium-based metal-organic polyhedra

Supramolecular gels based on metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) represent a versatile platform to access processable soft materials with controlled porosity. Herein, we report a self-gelation approach that allows the reversible assembly of a novel Ru-based MOP in the form of colloidal gels. The presence of cationic mixed-valence [Ru2(COO)4]+ paddlewheel units allows for modification of the MOP charge via acid/base treatment, and therefore, its solubility. This feature enables control over supramolecular interactions, making it possible to reversibly force MOP aggregation to form nanoparticles, which further assemble to form a colloidal gel network. The gelation process was thoroughly investigated by time-resolved ζ-potential, pH, and dynamic light scattering measurements. This strategy leads to the evolution of hierarchically porous aerogel from individual MOP molecules without using any additional component. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the simplicity of this method can be exploited for the obtention of MOP-based gels through a one-pot synthetic approach starting from MOP precursors.

Cofacial porphyrin organic cages. Metals regulating excitation electron transfer and CO2 reduction electrocatalytic properties

Herein, we introduce a comprehensive study of the photophysical behaviors and CO2 reduction electrocatalytic properties of a series of cofacial porphyrin organic cages (CPOC-M, M = H2, Co(ii), Ni(ii), Cu(ii), Zn(ii)), which are constructed by the covalent-bonded self-assembly of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)porphyrin (TFPP) and chiral (2-aminocyclohexyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetraformyl diimide (ANDI), followed by post-synthetic metalation. Electronic coupling between the TFPP donor and naphthalene-1,4 : 5,8-bis(dicarboximide) (NDI) acceptor in the metal-free cage is revealed to be very weak by UV-vis spectroscopic, electrochemical, and theoretical investigations. Photoexcitation of CPOC-H2, as well as its post-synthetic Zn and Co counterparts, leads to fast energy transfer from the triplet state porphyrin to the NDI unit according to the femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic results. In addition, CPOC-Co enables much better electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction reaction than the other metallic CPOC-M (M = Ni(ii), Cu(ii), Zn(ii)) and monomeric porphyrin cobalt compartment, supplying a partial current density of 18.0 mA cm-2 at -0.90 V with 90% faradaic efficiency of CO.

Chiral Superlattices Self-Assembled from Post-Modified Metal-Organic Polyhedra

Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) are inherently porous, discrete, and solvent-dispersive, and directing them into chiral superlattices through direct self-assembly remains a considerable challenge due to their nanoscale size and structural complexity. In this work, we illustrate a postmodification protocol to covalently conjugate a chiral cholesteryl pendant to MOPs. Postmodification retained the coordination cores and allowed for reaction-induced self-assembly in loosely packed nanosized columns without supramolecular chirality. Solvent-processed bottom-up self-assembly in aqueous media facilitated the well-defined packing into twisted superlattices with a 5 nm lattice parameter. Experimental and computational results validated the role of intercholesteryl forces in spinning the nanosized MOPs, which achieved the chirality transfer to supramolecular scale with chiral optics. This work establishes a novel protocol in rational design of MOP-based chiroptical materials for potential applications of enantioselective adsorption, catalysis, and separation.

Self-Assembly of Triple-Stranded Lanthanide Molecular Quasi-Lantern Containing 2,2'-Bipyridine Receptor: Luminescence Sensing and Magnetic Property

Ln₂L₃-type supramolecular architectures have received significant attention recently due to their unique magnetism and optical properties. Herein, we report the triple-stranded Ln₂L₃-type lanthanide molecular quasi-lanterns, which are fabricated by the deprotonation self-assembly of a linear ligand featuring a β-diketone chelating claw and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) moiety with lanthanide ions (Ln = Eu³⁺ and Dy³⁺). The crystal structure analysis indicates that Eu³⁺ and Dy³⁺ ions are all coordinated by eight oxygen donors but in different coordination geometries. The eight oxygen donors in Eu₂L₃ and Dy₂L₃ are arranged in a square antiprism and triangular dodecahedron geometry, respectively. Taking into account the fact that the bpy moiety has a strong coordination affinity for transition metal ions, luminescence sensing toward Cu²⁺ ions has been demonstrated with Eu₂L₃, bearing a detection of limit as low as 2.84 ppb. The luminescence sensing behavior of Eu₂L₃ is ascribed to the formation host-guest complex between Eu₂L₃ and Cu²⁺ ions with a 1:2 binding ratio. Dynamic AC susceptibility measurements for Dy₂L₃ reveal the relaxation of magnetization in it. This work provides a potential way for design and fabrication of lanthanide-based molecular materials with functions endowed by the ligands.

Porous Metal-Organic Cages Based on Rigid Bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-ene Type Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, and Gas Uptake Properties

Three new ligands containing a bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxydiimide unit have been used to assemble lantern-type metal-organic cages with the general formula [Cu4 L4 ]. Functionalisation of the backbone of the ligands leads to distinct crystal packing motifs between the three cages, as observed with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The three cages vary in their gas sorption behaviour, and the capacity of the materials for CO2 is found to depend on the activation conditions: softer activation conditions lead to superior uptake, and one of the cages displays the highest BET surface area found for lantern-type cages so far.

Water-Soluble Ionic Metal-Organic Polyhedra as a Versatile Platform for Enzyme Bio-immobilization

Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) can act as elementary structural units for the design of modular porous materials; however, their association with biological systems remains greatly restricted by their typically low stabilities and solubilities in water. Herein, we describe the preparation of novel MOPs bearing either anionic or cationic groups and exhibiting a high affinity for proteins. Simple mixing of the protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ionic MOP aqueous solutions resulted in the spontaneous formation of MOP-protein assemblies, in a colloidal state or as solid precipitates depending on the initial mixing ratio. The versatility of the method was further illustrated using two enzymes, catalase and cytochrome c, with different sizes and isoelectric points (pI's) below and above 7. This mode of assembly led to the high retention of catalytic activity and enabled recyclability. Furthermore, the co-immobilization of cytochrome c with highly charged MOPs resulted in a substantial 44-fold increase of its catalytic activity.

Selective Supramolecular Recognition of Nitroaromatics by a Fluorescent Metal-Organic Cage Based on a Pyridine-Decorated Dibenzodiaza-Crown Macrocyclic Co(II) Complex

Two isomorphous fluorescent (FL) lantern-shaped metal-organic cages 1 and 2 were prepared by coordination-directed self-assembly of Co(II) centers with a new aza-crown macrocyclic ligand bearing pyridine pendant arms (L_py). The cage structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, thermogravimetric, elemental microanalysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 show that anions (Cl^- in 1 and Br^- in 2) are encapsulated within the cage cavity. 1 and 2 bear two coordinated water molecules that are directed inside the cages, surrounded by the eight pyridine rings at the "bottom" and the "roof" of the cage. These hydrogen bond donors, π systems, and the cationic nature of the cages enable 1 and 2 to encapsulate the anions. FL experiments revealed that 1 could detect nitroaromatic compounds by exhibiting selective and sensitive fluorescence quenching toward p-nitroaniline (PNA), recommending a limit of detection of 4.24 ppm. Moreover, the addition of 50 μL of PNA and o-nitrophenol to the ethanolic suspension of 1 led to a significant large FL red shift, namely, 87 and 24 nm, respectively, which were significantly higher than the corresponding values observed in the presence of other nitroaromatic compounds. The titration of the ethanolic suspension of 1, with various concentrations of PNA (>12 μM) demonstrated a concentration-dependent emission red shift. Hence, the efficient FL quenching of 1 was capable of distinguishing the dinitrobenzene isomers. Meanwhile, the observed red shift (10 nm) and quenching of this emission band under the influence of a trace amount of o- and p-nitrophenol isomers also showed that 1 could discriminate between o- and p-nitrophenol. Replacement of the chlorido with a bromido ligand in 1 generated cage 2 which was a more electron-donating cage than 1. The FL experiments showed that 2 was partially more sensitive and less selective toward NACs than 1.

Site Selectivity for the Spin States and Spin Crossover in Undecanuclear Heterometallic Cyanido-Bridged Clusters

Polynuclear molecular clusters offer an opportunity to design new hierarchical switchable materials with collective properties, based on variation of the chemical composition, size, shapes, and overall building blocks organization. In this study, we rationally designed and constructed an unprecedented series of cyanido-bridged nanoclusters realizing new undecanuclear topology: Fe^II[Fe^II(bzbpen)]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₂[W^IV(CN)₈]₂·18MeOH (1), Na^I[Co^II(bzbpen)]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₃[W^IV(CN)₈]·28MeOH (2), Na^I[Ni^II(bzbpen)]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₃[W^IV(CN)₈]·27MeOH (3), and Co^II[Co^II(R/S-pabh)₂]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₂[W^IV(CN)₈]₂·26MeOH [4R and 4S; bzbpen = N¹,N²-dibenzyl-N¹,N²-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine; R/S-pabh = (R/S)-N-(1-naphthyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine], of size up to 11 nm³, ca. 2.0 × 2.2 × 2.5 nm (1-3) and ca. 1.4 × 2.5 × 2.5 nm (4). 1, 2, and 4 exhibit site selectivity for the spin states and spin transition related to the structural speciation based on subtle exogenous and endogenous effects imposed on similar but distinguishable 3d metal-ion-coordination moieties. 1 exhibits a mid-temperature-range spin-crossover (SCO) behavior that is more advanced than the previously reported SCO clusters based on octacyanidometallates and an onset of SCO behavior close to room temperature. The latter feature is also present in 2 and 4, which suggests the emergence of Co^II-centered SCO not observed in previous bimetallic cyanido-bridged Co^II-W^V/IV systems. In addition, reversible switching of the SCO behavior in 1 via a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation during desolvation was also documented.

Metallic–Organic Cages (MOCs) with Heterometallic Character: Flexibility-Enhancing MOFs

The dichotomy between metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal–organic cages (MOCs) opens up the research spectrum of two fields which, despite having similarities, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Due to the fact that they have cavities inside, they also have applicability in the porosity sector. Bloch and coworkers within this evolution from MOFs to MOCs manage to describe a MOC with a structure of Cu2 paddlewheel Cu4L4 (L = bis(pyrazolyl)methane) with high precision thanks to crystallographic analyses of X-ray diffraction and also SEM-EDX. Then, also at the same level of concreteness, they were able to find the self-assembly of Pd(II)Cl2 moieties on the available nitrogen donor atoms leading to a [Cu4(L(PdCl2))4] structure. Here, calculations of the DFT density functional allow us to reach an unusual precision given the magnitude and structural complexity, explaining how a pyrazole ring of each bis(pyprazolyl)methane ligand must rotate from an anti to a syn conformation, and a truncation of the MOC structure allows us to elucidate, in the absence of the MOC constraint and its packing in the crystal, that the rotation is almost barrierless, as well as also explain the relative stability of the different conformations, with the anti being the most stable conformation. Characterization calculations with Mayer bond orders (MBO) and noncovalent interaction (NCI) plots discern what is important in the interaction of this type of cage with PdCl2 moieties, also CuCl2 by analogy, as well as simple molecules of water, since the complex is stable in this solvent. However, the L ligand is proved to not have the ability to stabilize an H2O molecule.

Endohedral Functionalization for Structural Transformation of Polyoxovanadate-Based Metal-Organic Cube

Functionalized internal modifications of metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) can endow properties and functions different from the original ones. Until now, there have been only a few examples of endohedral modifications of polyoxovanadate-based MOPs. Herein, an efficient coordination-driven strategy was chosen for the inner modification of two metal-organic cubes (MOCs) with different sizes, VMOC-1 and VMOC-4, constructed from polyoxovanadate clusters [V₆O₆(OCH₃)₉(SO₄)(CO₂)₃]^2- SBU and tetradentate ligands. Pyridinophosphonic acid with potential coordination capability was introduced to replace the sulfate of the hexavanadate cluster and graft the pyridine functional group inside the cage. The introduction of pyridylphosphate in the VMOC-4 system gave a cubic cage with a pyridyl endo-modified isomer. Interestingly, the smaller cubic cage VMOC-1 was induced to undergo structural transformation to obtain VMOC-py-1. The organic dyes adsorption of VMOC-py-1 and VMOC-1 showed that the endomodified structure could adsorb larger and more dyes, compared to the original cube.

Metal Organic Polygons and Polyhedra: Instabilities and Remedies

The field of coordination chemistry has undergone rapid transformation from preparation of monometallic complexes to multimetallic complexes. So far numerous multimetallic coordination complexes have been synthesized. Multimetallic coordination complexes with well-defined architectures are often called as metal organic polygons and polyhedra (MOPs). In recent past, MOPs have received tremendous attention due to their potential applicability in various emerging fields. However, the field of coordination chemistry of MOPs often suffer set back due to the instability of coordination complexes particularly in aqueous environment-mostly by aqueous solvent and atmospheric moisture. Accordingly, the fate of the field does not rely only on the water solubilities of newly synthesized MOPs but very much dependent on their stabilities both in solution and solid state. The present review discusses several methodologies to prepare MOPs and investigates their stabilities under various circumstances. Considering the potential applicability of MOPs in sustainable way, several methodologies (remedies) to enhance the stabilities of MOPs are discussed here.

Platonic and Archimedean solids in discrete metal-containing clusters

Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

A Porous Polyaromatic Solid for Vapor Adsorption of Xylene with High Efficiency, Selectivity, and Reusability

Development of porous materials capable of capturing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as benzene and its derivatives, with high efficiency, selectivity, and reusability is highly demanded. Here we report unusual vapor adsorption behavior toward VOCs by a new porous solid, composed of a polyaromatic capsule bearing a spherical nanocavity with subnano-sized windows. Without prior crystallization and high-temperature vacuum drying, the porous polyaromatic solid exhibits the following five features: vapor adsorption of benzene over cyclohexane with 90 % selectivity, high affinity toward o-xylene over benzene and toluene with >80 % selectivity, ortho-selective adsorption ability (>50 %) from mixed xylene isomers, tight VOCs storage even under high temperature and vacuum conditions, and at least 5 times reusability for xylene adsorption. The observed adsorption abilities are accomplished at ambient temperature and pressure within 1 h, which has not been demonstrated by organic/inorganic porous materials reported previously.

SO2 capture and detection using a Cu(II)-metal-organic polyhedron

The SO₂ adsorption-desorption capacity at room temperature and 1 bar of the metal-organic polyhedron MOP-CDC was investigated. In addition, the qualitative solid-state absorption-emission properties of this material (before and after SO₂ exposure) were measured and tested, and it demonstrated remarkable capability for SO₂ detection. Our results represent the first example of fluorimetric SO₂ detection in a MOP.

Reversible Discrete-to-Extended Metal-Organic Polyhedra Transformation by Sulfonic Acid Surface Functionalization

Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) are molecular porous units in which desired functionalities can be installed with precise geometrical and compositional control. By combing two complementary chemical moieties, such as sulfonic acid groups and Rh(II)-carboxylate paddlewheel, we synthesized a robust water-soluble cuboctahedral MOP with excellent features in both solution and solid states. Herein, we demonstrate that the superior chemical stability of the Rh₂ unit and the elevated number of functional groups on the surface (24 per cage) result in a porous cage with high solubility and stability in water, including acidic, neutral, and basic pH conditions. We also prove that the sulfonic acid-rich form of the cage can be isolated through postsynthetic acid treatment. This transformation involves an improved gas uptake capacity and the capability to reversibly assemble the cages into a three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (MOF) structure. Likewise, this sulfonic acid functionalization provides both MOP and MOF solids with high proton conductivities (>10^-3 S cm^-1), comparable to previously reported high conducting metal-organic materials. The influence of the MOP-to-MOF processing in the gas adsorption capacity indicates that this structural transformation can provide materials with higher and more controllable porous properties. These results illustrate the high potential of acidic MOPs as more flexible porous building units in terms of processability, structural complexity, and tunability of the properties.

Organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical metal-organic frameworks and cages: design, structures, and applications

Developing hierarchical ordered systems is challenging. Using organo-macrocycles to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination cages (PCCs) provides an efficient way to obtain hierarchical assemblies. Macrocycles, such as crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbiturils, and pillararenes, can be incorporated within MOFs/PCCs and they also endow the resultant composites with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent developments of organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical MOFs/PCCs, emphasizing applications and structure-property relationships of these hierarchically porous materials. This review provides insights for future research on hierarchical self-assembly using macrocycles as building blocks and functional ligands to extend the applications of the composites.
