Revisiting imidazolium receptors for the recognition of anions: highlighted research during 2010-2019

Transition Metal Complexes with Appended Benzimidazole Groups for Sensing Dihydrogenphosphate

Four new complexes [Ru(bpy)2(bbib)](PF6)2, [Ru(phen)2(bbib)](PF6)2, [Re(CO)3(bbib)(py)](PF6) and [Ir(ppy)2(bbib)](PF6) [where bbib=4,4'-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine] have been prepared and their photophysical properties determined. Their behaviour has been studied with a variety of anions in acetonitrile, DMSO and 10 % aquated DMSO. Acetate and dihydrogenphosphate demonstrate a redshift in the bbib ligand associated absorptions suggesting that the ligand is strongly interacting with these anions. The 3MLCT emissive state is sensitive to the introduction of small quantities of anion (sub-stoichiometric quantities) and significant quenching is typically observed with acetate, although this is less pronounced in the presence of water. The emissive behaviour with dihydrogenphosphate is variable, showing systematic changes as anion concentration increases with several distinct interactions evident. 1H- and 31P-NMR titrations in a 10 % D2O-DMSO-D6 mixture suggest that with dihydrogenphosphate, the imidazole group is able to act as both a proton acceptor and donor. It appears that all four complexes can form a {[complex]2-H2PO4} "dimer", a one-to-one species (which the X-ray crystallography study suggests is dimeric in the solid-state), and a complex with a combined bis(dihydrogenphosphate) complex anion. The speciation relies on complex equilibria dependent on several factors including the complex charge, the hydrophobicity of the associated ligands, and the solvent.

Multi-functional imidazolium dendrimers based on thiacalix[4]arenes: self-assembly, catalysis and DNA binding

For the first time, dendrimers based on thiacalix[4]arenes bearing imidazolium dendrons on one side and alkyl fragments on another side of the macrocyclic platform and symmetrical dendrimers with four dendrons on both sides were synthesized. Dendrons consist of gallic acid-based branches functionalized with imidazolium and triazolium groups. The physicochemical properties of the dendrimers such as micellar concentration (CMC), size, and solubilization capacity were measured. Novel dendrimers exhibit high binding efficiency with calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) as revealed by fluorescence quenching of the DNA-EtBr complex in the presence of macrocycles. Dendrimers have been used as supports for Pd nanoparticles, which show high catalytic activity for the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds.

Synthesis of Cu (II) and Zn (II) Complexes of a Quinoline Based Flexible Amide Receptor as Fluorescent Probe for Dihydrogen Phosphate and Hydrogen Sulphate and Their Antibacterial Activity

A novel 8-hydroxy quinoline-derived amide receptor, in conjunction with its Cu (II) and Zn (II) complexes, has been strategically developed to function as remarkably efficient fluorescent receptors with a distinct capability for anion sensing. The comprehensive characterization of the synthesized compounds were achieved through UV-Vis, IR, NMR, and HRMS spectroscopic techniques. Among the Cu (II) and Zn (II) complexes, the latter exhibits superior selectivity for anions, specifically dihydrogen phosphate and hydrogen sulfate, as their tetrabutylammonium salts in a 9:1 acetonitrile-water (v/v) mixture. The Cu (II) complex demonstrates enhanced anion binding compared to the amide ligand, albeit with reduced selectivity. Furthermore, the affinity was evaluated using the Benesi-Hildebrand plot. The binding constants and Limit of Detection (LOD) for both complexes were precisely quantified. The Job plot illustrates a clear 1:1 binding interaction between the metal complexes and the guest anions. Significantly, both metal-complex receptors display a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity, against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is worth highlighting that the Zn (II) complexed receptor outperforms the Cu (II) complexed receptor, as evidenced by its considerably lower Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value against both bacterial strains.

A new biphenol-dipicolylamine based ligand and its dinuclear Zn2+ complex as fluorescent sensors for ibuprofen and ketoprofen in aqueous solution

In this work, the study of the new ligand 3,3'-bis[N,N-bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)aminomethyl]-2,2'-dihydroxybiphenyl (L) is reported, where a central 2,2'-biphenol (BPH) fluorophore was functionalized at 3,3'-positions with two dipicolylamine (DPA) side arms as receptor units. Following the synthesis and full chemical-physical characterization, the acid-base and Zn2+-coordination abilities of L were investigated through a combination of potentiometric, UV-Vis, fluorescence, NMR, XRD and DFT measurements. The optical properties of the ligand turned out to be strongly dependent on the pH, being straightforwardly associated with the protonation state of the BPH moiety, whereas its peculiar design allowed to form stable mono and dinuclear Zn2+ complexes. In the latter species, the presence of two Zn2+ ions coordinatively unsaturated and placed at close distance to each other, prompted us to test their usefulness as metallo-receptors for two environmental pollutants of great relevance, ibuprofen and ketoprofen. Potentiometric and fluorescence investigations evidenced that these important non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are effectively coordinated by the metallo-receptors and, of relevance, both the stability and the fluorescence properties of the resulting ternary adducts are markedly affected by the different chemical architectures of the two substrates. This study aims at highlighting the promising perspectives arising from the use of polyamino phenolic ligands as chemosensors for H+/Zn2+ and other additional anionic targets in their metal-complexed forms.

Reversible Hydrosulfide (HS-) Binding Using Exclusively C-H Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions in Imidazolium Hosts

H2S is a physiologically important signaling molecule with complex roles in biology and exists primarily as HS- at physiological pH. Despite this anionic character, few investigations have focused on the molecular recognition and reversible binding of this important biological anion. Using a series of imidazole and imidazolium host molecules, we investigate the role of preorganization and charge on HS- binding. Using a macrocyclic bis-imidazolium receptor, we demonstrate the unexpected 2:1 host-guest binding of HS-, which was characterized both in solution and by X-ray crystallography. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of this binding stoichiometry for HS- binding. Moreover, the short C-H···S distances of 2.53, 2.54, 2.76, and 2.79 Å are well within the sum of the van der Waals radii of the interacting atoms, which is consistent with strong C-H···S interactions.

Towards molecularly imprinted polymers that respond to and capture phosphorylated tyrosine epitopes using fluorescent bis-urea and bis-imidazolium receptors

Early detection of cancer is essential for successful treatment and improvement in patient prognosis. Deregulation of post-translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins, especially phosphorylation, is present in many types of cancer. Therefore, the development of materials for the rapid sensing of low abundant phosphorylated peptides in biological samples can be of great therapeutic value. In this work, we have synthesised fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymers (fMIPs) for the detection of the phosphorylated tyrosine epitope of ZAP70, a cancer biomarker. The polymers were grafted as nanometer-thin shells from functionalised submicron-sized silica particles using a reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerisation. Employing the combination of fluorescent urea and intrinsically cationic bis-imidazolium receptor cross-linkers, we have developed fluorescent sensory particles, showing an imprinting factor (IF) of 5.0. The imprinted polymer can successfully distinguish between phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated tripeptides, reaching lower micromolar sensitivity in organic solvents and specifically capture unprotected peptide complements in a neutral buffer. Additionally, we have shown the importance of assessing the influence of counterions present in the MIP system on the imprinting process and final material performance. The potential drawbacks of using epitopes with protective groups, which can co-imprint with targeted functionality, are also discussed.

Comprehensive Insights into Medicinal Research on Imidazole-Based Supramolecular Complexes

The electron-rich five-membered aromatic aza-heterocyclic imidazole, which contains two nitrogen atoms, is an important functional fragment widely present in a large number of biomolecules and medicinal drugs; its unique structure is beneficial to easily bind with various inorganic or organic ions and molecules through noncovalent interactions to form a variety of supramolecular complexes with broad medicinal potential, which is being paid an increasing amount of attention regarding more and more contributions to imidazole-based supramolecular complexes for possible medicinal application. This work gives systematical and comprehensive insights into medicinal research on imidazole-based supramolecular complexes, including anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, and anti-inflammatory aspects as well as ion receptors, imaging agents, and pathologic probes. The new trend of the foreseeable research in the near future toward imidazole-based supramolecular medicinal chemistry is also prospected. It is hoped that this work provides beneficial help for the rational design of imidazole-based drug molecules and supramolecular medicinal agents and more effective diagnostic agents and pathological probes.

Luminescence Sensing of Biomacromolecules Heparin and Protamine in 100% Human Serum and Plasma by Supramolecular Polymeric Assemblies

Heparin, an anionic biomacromolecule, is routinely used as an anticoagulant during medical surgery to prevent blood clot formation and in the treatment of several heart, lung, and circulatory disorders having a higher risk of blood clotting. We herein report supramolecular polymeric nanoassemblies of cationic pyrene-tagged bis-imidazolium amphiphiles for heparin detection with high sensitivity and selectivity in aqueous buffer, plasma, and serum media. The nano-assemblies exhibited cyan-green excimeric emission in aqueous media, and their multivalent array of positive surface charges allowed them to form co-assemblies with heparin, resulting in significantly enhanced emission. This provided a convenient method for heparin detection in buffer at nanomolar concentrations, and most notably, a ratiometric fluorescence response was obtained even in highly competitive 100% human serum and 100% human plasma in a clinically relevant concentration range. Moreover, using the heparin-based luminescent co-assemblies, protamine sulfate, a clinically administered antidote to heparin, was also detected in 100% human serum and 100% human plasma at sub-micromolar concentrations.

A naphthalimide-tyrosine-based dicationic amphiphile for intracellular 'turn-on' simultaneous detection of ATP and CTP

We have developed a new naphthalimide-based amphiphile (YN-1) for the simultaneous detection of ATP and CTP. In YN-1, the cationic tyrosine-linked polyamine (+2 charge, hydrophilic unit) is appended at the -peri position of naphthalimide (hydrophobic unit). YN-1 and its Boc-protected compound 4 were characterized using state-of-the-art spectroscopic and optical techniques such as NMR, IR, UV-vis and fluorescence. The fluorescence data revealed that YN-1 showed a 'turn-on' (λ_em = 440 nm) fluorescence response for nanomolar detection of nucleoside triphosphates such as ATP and CTP in 20% HEPES buffer-DMSO solution. YN-1 also showed a concentration-based discrimination between ATP and CTP. YN-1 has been successfully applied for bioimaging of nucleoside triphosphates in MCF-7 live cancer cells with good compatibility. Therefore, the important findings from the present work will provide insight for future development of fluorescent probes to detect various kinds of essential nucleoside triphosphates.

A Tetranuclear Copper(II)/Calcium(II) Complex as Dual Chemosensor for Colorimetric and Fluorescent Detection of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

The tetranuclear Cu²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Ca2⁺ /Cu²⁺ complex based on Malten ligand has been investigated as a platform for anion binding. Simple organic carboxylates and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been tested, revealing the ability of the platform to bind them. The receiving platform hosts at least two guests in solution although a third anion can be bound, as suggested by X-ray diffraction analysis. The addition of the anions is accompanied by a color change of the solution, making the system a colorimetric sensor for carboxylates (LOD values comprised between 3.6 and 20.7 ppm). A fluorescent system consisting of the 2-(3-oxido-6-oxoxanthen-9-yl)benzoate (fluorescein anion) linked to the tetranuclear platform has been also prepared and used in a chemosensing ensemble approach to signal the presence of the selected anions (Log K between 2.6 and 5.6 for the addition of two guests). The latter also works in a paper strip test, offering the chemosensor a possible practical application.

Current Advances in Diazoles-based Chemosensors for CN- and FDetection

Advances in molecular probes have recently intensified because they are valuable tools in studying species of interest for human health, the environment, and industry. Among these species, cyanide (CN-) and fluoride (F-) stand out as hazardous and toxic ions in trace amounts. Thus, there is a significant interest in probes design for their detection with diverse diazoles (pyrazole and imidazole) used for this purpose. These diazole derivatives are known as functional molecules because of their known synthetic versatility and applicability, as they exhibit essential photophysical properties with helpful recognition centers. This review provides an overview of the recent progress (2017-2021) in diazole-based sensors for CN- and F- detection, using the azolic ring as a signaling or recognition unit. The discussion focuses on the mechanism of the action described for recognizing the anion, the structure of the probes with the best synthetic simplicity, detection limits (LODs), application, and selectivity. In this context, the analysis involves probes for cyanide sensing first, then probes for fluoride sensing, and ultimately, dual probes that allow both species recognition.

A Benzimidazolium-Based Organic Cage with Antimicrobial Activity

Considering the wide interest in (benz)imidazolium-based drugs, we here report our study on a benzimidazolium-based organic cage as potential antimicrobial and antifungal agent. Cytotoxicity studies on a human derived cell line, SH-SY5Y, showed that the cage is not cytotoxic at all at the investigated concentrations. Anion binding studies demonstrated that the cage can bind anions (chloride and nitrate, in particular) both in organic solvent and 20%v D2O/CD3CN mixture. The cage was also tested as anionophore, showing a weak but measurable transport of chloride and nitrate across LUVs vesicles. Nonetheless, the compounds have antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria). This is probably the first organic cage studied as anionophore and antimicrobial agent.

Imidazolium-Modified Bispyrene-Based Fluorescent Aggregates for Discrimination of Multiple Anions in Aqueous Solution

A great number of anions exist in biological systems and natural environment, and are highly relevant to human health and environment quality. It is necessary to develop simple and effective sensors to differentiate and identify those similar or different anions. Here, an imidazolium-modified bispyrene-based fluorescent amphiphilic probe DPyDIM was synthesized and its aggregates were applied to detect and discriminate various anions. The fluorescent aggregates exhibit ratiometric responses to different types of anions. Moreover, the ratiometric responses to different types of anions are featured with multiple-wavelength cross-reactivity. The collection of fluorescence variation at four typical wavelengths can generate distinct recognition patterns to specific anions. The heat map and principal component analysis results verify that this single fluorescent sensor system can effectively and sensitively identify 16 kinds of anions that belong to phosphorus-containing, sulfur-containing anions, and anionic surfactants. The cross-reactive sensing of the amphiphilic fluorescent aggregates was attributed to the different influences on the aggregation behaviors of the probes by different anions. The present work provides a promising strategy for effective detection and discrimination of multiple anions by employing dynamic fluorescent aggregates as a sensing platform.

Efficient imidazolium-biomolecule interaction-assisted amplified quenching for ultrasensitive detection of heparin

Detection of Heparin (HP) under physiological conditions is difficult due to the presence of biological obstructions including proteins and lipids. Thus, it is highly challenging to selectively detect HP and to increase its sensitivity in complex systems. Here, we report the detection of HP at nanomolar levels via efficient imidazolium-HP interaction-assisted fluorescence quenching amplification. The self-assembled pyrenyl aggregates are devised as a conduit for efficient exciton transport, which induces amplified fluorescence quenching for HP detection. This amplified quenching is enhanced by introducing an imidazolium receptor designed to have high affinity to HP via electrostatic and/or additional interactions with C2 protons, resulting in a very high Stern-Volmer quenching constant of approximately 1.17 ☓ 10 8 M -1 .

Phenanthrene-Extended Phenazine Dication: An Electrochromic Conformational Switch Presenting Dual Reactivity

The synthesis and isolation of one of the few examples of a π-extended diamagnetic phenazine dication have been achieved by oxidizing a phenanthrene-based dihydrophenazine precursor. The resulting dication was isolated and fully characterized, highlighting an aromatic distorted structure, generated by the conformational change upon the oxidation of the dihydrophenazine precursor, which is also correlated with a marked electrochromic change in the UV–vis spectrum. The aromaticity of the dication has also been investigated theoretically, proving that the species is aromatic based on all major criteria (structural, magnetic, and energetic). Moreover, the material presents an intriguing dual reactivity, resulting in ring contraction to a π-extended triarylimidazolinium and reduction to the dihydrophenazine precursor, depending on the nature of the nucleophile involved. This result helps shed light on the yet largely unexplored reactivity and properties of extended dicationic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In particular, the fact that the molecule can undergo a reversible change in conformation upon oxidation and reduction opens potential applications for this class of derivatives as molecular switches and actuators.

A perylene diimide-based nanoring architecture for exogenous and endogenous ATP detection: biochemical assay for monitoring phosphorylation of glucose

Positively charged amphiphiles hold great significance in supramolecular chemistry due to their good solubility, and physiochemical and molecular recognition properties. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization and molecular recognition properties of the dicationic amphiphile based on perylene diimide-tyrosine alkyl amide amine (PDI 3). PDI 3 showed the formation of a nanoring architecture in the self-assembled aggregated state (90% H₂O-DMSO mixture) as observed by SEM and TEM studies. The diameter of the nanoring is around 30-50 nm with a height varying from 1 to 2 nm. The self-assembled aggregates of PDI 3 are very sensitive towards nucleoside triphosphates. Upon addition of ATP, PDI 3 showed a decrease in the absorbance and emission intensity at 535 and 580 nm (due to the monomer state), respectively. The lowest detection limit for ATP is 10.8 nM (UV) and 3.06 nM (FI). Upon interaction of ATP with PDI 3, the nanoring morphology transformed into a spherical structure. These changes could be attributed to the formation of ionic self-assembled aggregates between dicationic PDI 3 and negatively charged ATP via electrostatic and H-bonding interactions. The complexation mechanism of PDI 3 and ATP was confirmed by optical, NMR, Job's plot, DLS, SEM and AFM studies. PDI 3 displays low cytotoxicity toward MG-63 cells and can be successfully used for the detection of exogenous and endogenous ATP. The resulting PDI 3 + ATP complex is successfully used as a 'turn-on' biochemical assay for monitoring phosphorylation of glucose.

Synthesis and aqueous anion recognition of an imidazolium-based nonacationic cup

An imidazolium-based nonacationic cup (1·9X; X = PF₆^- or Cl^-) was synthesized via step-by-step S_N2 reactions without using any template. The water-soluble 1·9Cl^- as a molecular container can encapsulate anionic nucleoside triphosphate and dinucleotide molecules (e.g., ATP and NADH) inside its cavity through hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions in aqueous solution.

N-Arylation of Protected and Unprotected 5-Bromo-2-aminobenzimidazole as Organic Material: Non-Linear Optical (NLO) Properties and Structural Feature Determination through Computational Approach

The interest in the NLO response of organic compounds is growing rapidly, due to the ease of synthesis, availability, and low loss. Here, in this study, Cu(II)-catalyzed selective N-arylation of 2-aminobenzimidazoles derivatives were achieved in the presence of different bases Et₃N/TMEDA, solvents DCM/MeOH/H₂O, and various aryl boronic acids under open atmospheric conditions. Two different copper-catalyzed pathways were selected for N-arylation in the presence of active nucleophilic sites, providing a unique tool for the preparation of NLO materials, C-NH (aryl) derivatives of 2-aminobenzimidazoles with protection and without protection of NH₂ group. In addition to NMR analysis, all synthesized derivatives (1a–1f and 2a–2f) of 5-bromo-2-aminobenzimidazole (1) were computed for their non-linear optical (NLO) properties and reactivity descriptor parameters. Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis was performed to get information about the electronic properties and reactivity of synthesized compounds.

A Novel Strategy to Design and Construct AIE-active Mechanofluorochromic Materials via Regulation of Molecular Structure

In this work, we first designed and synthesized tetraphenylene-fused aryl-imidazole derivatives TM-1-4 via regulation of molecular structure, which were consisted of 1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline, 1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole, 4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole, 3,3'-(1H-imidazole-4,5-diyl)dipyridine moieties and AIE-active tetraphenylethene units, respectively. The results illustrated that TM-1-4 exhibited clear AIE characteristics. Meanwhile, TM-2 and TM-3 show excellent solid emission properties (Φ_TM-2 =13.73 % and Φ_TM-3 =36.21 %), whereas TM-1 and TM-4 exhibit the opposite properties (Φ_TM-1 =1.48 % and Φ_TM-4 =4.83 %). The multiple rotors (pyridine and benzene ring) causes twisted conformations of the molecule that prevents π-π stacking and enhances solid emission(ΦTM-2<ΦTM-3, ΦTM-1<ΦTM-4). Significantly, TM-2 and TM-3 also exhibited reversible mechanochromic behavior (Emission red shifts: Δλ_TM-2 =43 nm and Δλ_TM-3 =41 nm) with color changes between blue and green emissions. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) suggested the disordered state of ground sample could be readily returned to an ordered crystalline. Therefore, the mechanochromisms of TM-2 and TM-3 are ascribable to the phase transformation between crystal and amorphous structure. The single crystal X-ray analysis of TM-2 reveals a twisted conformation for TPE moiety and the absence of π-π intermolecular stacking. These excellent optical properties of TM-2 and TM-3 make them potentially applications in mechanochromic materials and imaging agents.

Construction of a simple dual-channel fluorescence chemosensor for Cu2+ ion and GSSG detection and its mitochondria-targeting bioimaging applications

Numerous chemosensors have been developed for next-generation detection systems because of their ease of use and promising characteristics to distinguish signals between various analytes binding. However, given their typically poor emission response and arduous preparation methods, very few chemosensing probes have been commercialized to date. In this work, a simple, naphthoquinone-based mitochondria-targeting chemosensor (CIA) has been fabricated for the simultaneous detection of Cu²⁺ and GSSG (glutathione oxidized) through an "on-off" mode in a buffered semi-aqueous solution. Significantly, the CIA chemosensor showed a sensitive detection response towards Cu²⁺ and GSSG with low detection limits (0.309 μM, and 0.226 μM, respectively). In addition, the detection mechanism of CIA was thoroughly verified and confirmed using numerous analytical techniques. Furthermore, CIA was utilized as a sequential fluorescence biomarker to detect Cu²⁺ in human cervical cancer cell lines. These findings indicate that the chemosensor CIA can discriminate human cancer cells from normal cells. The CIA was also confirmed to possess the ability to target mitochondria. More importantly, the present CIA chemosensor detected Cu²⁺ in zebrafish larvae, indicating the probe has tissue penetration ability.

Mitochondria-targeted acridine-based dual-channel fluorescence chemosensor for detection of Sn4+ and Cr2O72- ions in water and its application in discriminative detection of cancer cells

The goal of the present work was to fabricate a new low-cost, easy-to-prepare, dual-channel fluorescence chemosensor comprised of acridine-diphenylacetyl moieties (NDA) to enable remarkable Sn⁴⁺ detection in water and biological medium. The resulting NDA-Sn⁴⁺ complex was utilized for the distinguished identification of Cr₂O₇^2- ions from other anions and biomolecules. These investigations involve the absorption, fluorescence, and electrochemical methods for the detection of Sn⁴⁺ and Cr₂O₇^2- ions in pure water. The mechanism for NDA-mediated Sn⁴⁺ detection was experimentally determined by FT-IR, NMR titrations, mass (ESI) analyses, and DFT calculations. The obtained results indicate that the NDA chemosensor possessed excellent performance characteristics including good water solubility and compatibility, quick response time (less than 10 s), high sensitivity (Sn⁴⁺ = 0.268 μM and Cr₂O₇^2- = 0.160 μM), and selectivity against coexisting metals, anions, amino acids, and peptides. The chemosensor NDA induced negligible toxicity in live cells and was successfully utilized as a biomarker for the tracking of Sn⁴⁺ in human normal and cancer cells. More importantly, NDA demonstrates distinguished recognition of Sn⁴⁺ in human cancer cells rather than in normal live cells. Additionally, NDA was shown to act as a mitochondria-targeted probe in FaDu cells.

Hierarchical Two-Level Supramolecular Chirality of an Achiral Anthracene-Based Tetracationic Nanotube in Water

Herein, we report an achiral anthracene-based tetracationic nanotube (1⋅4Cl^- ) that shows two levels of supramolecular chirality: namely, conformationally adaptive host-guest complexation with nucleoside triphosphates (e.g. ATP, GTP, CTP, and UTP) and twisted packing of the chiral host-guest complexes in water. Interestingly, achiral 1⋅4Cl^- exhibits chiral recognition for ATP/GTP and CTP/UTP through structural transformation of its intramolecular M- and P-twisted conformation as the first level of supramolecular chirality, which leads to adaptive chirality with opposite CD responses. Furthermore, the formation of chiral M-1⋅4Cl^- ⊃ATP can promote an intermolecular P-twisted dimeric packing of anthracene rings as the second level of supramolecular chirality to achieve assembled chirality with strong circularly polarized luminescence arising from the excimer ((+)-CPL, g_lum ≈10^-2 ) in water.

Supramolecular Coordination Cages Based on N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Gold(I) Ligands and Their Precursors: Self-Assembly, Structural Transformation and Guest-Binding Properties

The incorporation of functional groups into the cavity of discrete supramolecular coordination cages (SCCs) will bring unique functions and applications. Here, three dicarboxylate ligands (H₂ L1Cl, H₂ L2Cl and H₂ L3Cl) containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors as linkers were introduced to construct SCCs by combining with two C₃ -symmertic (CpZr)₃ (μ₃ -O)(μ₂ -OH)₃ clusters as three-connect vertices, resulted in a series of rugby-like V₂ E₃ (V=vertex, E=edge) type homoleptic cages (SCC-1, SCC-2 and SCC-3). However, V₄ E₆ -type tetrahedral cages (SCC-4 and SCC-5), incorporating six Au-NHC moieties, were obtained when the corresponding NHC-gold(I) functionalized ligands (H₂ L1^Au , H₂ L2^Au ) were applied. For the first time, we present a trackable CpZr-involved cage to cage conversion to generate a heteroleptic V₂ E₃ cage (SCC-6) from two homoleptic cages (SCC-2 and SCC-5) with different geometries of V₂ E₃ and V₄ E₆ . The heteroleptic assembly SCC-6 can also be formed upon a subcomponent displacement strategy. The structural transformation and reassembly processes were detected and monitored by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy and electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry. The formation of heteroleptic assembly was further supported by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Moreover, homoleptic cage SCC-2 possesses a trigonal bipyramidal cationic cavity allowing the encapsulation of a series of sulfonate anionic guests.

Two bis-urea receptors bearing aromatic meta-substituted electron-withdrawing groups demonstrated  halide-coordination-triggered self-assemblies with contrasting coordination numbers and variation in morphology.
