Rational Design of a Multifunctional Hydrogel Trap for Water and Fertilizer Capture: A Review

Water scarcity and land infertility pose significant challenges to agricultural development, particularly in arid and semiarid regions. Improving soil-water-retention capacity and fertilizer utilization efficiency through the application of soil additives has become a pivotal approach in agricultural practices. Hydrogels exhibit exceptional water absorption and fertilizer retention capabilities, making them extensively utilized in the fields of agriculture, forestry, and desert control. Currently, most reviews primarily focus on the raw materials, classification, synthesis methods, and application prospects of hydrogels, with limited attention given to strategies for enhancing water-retention performance, mechanisms underlying fertilizer absorption, and environmental risks. This review covers the commonly used cross-linking methods in hydrogel synthesis and the structure-activity relationship between hydrogels and water as well as fertilizer. Additionally, a thorough analysis of the ecological benefits and risks associated with hydrogels is presented. Finally, future prospects and challenges are delineated from the perspectives of material design and engineering applications.

Covalently grafting polycation to bacterial cellulose for antibacterial and anti-cell adhesive wound dressings

Hydrogel-based wound dressings are becoming increasingly important for wound healing. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has been commonly used as wound dressings due to its good in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility. However, pure BC does not possess antibacterial properties. In this regard, polycation gel was grafted onto the BC using a surface-initiated activator regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP) with subsequent quaternization for antibacterial wound dressing. Dimethylethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was successfully polymerized on the BC surface which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The morphology structure, specific surface area, pore size, and mechanical properties were also characterized. The quaternized PDMAEMA grafted on the BC endowed it with excellent antibacterial activity against E. coli (Gram-negative) and S. aureus (Gram-positive) with a killing rate of 89.2 % and 93.4 %, respectively. The number of cells was significantly reduced on QPD/BC hydrogel, demonstrating its good anti-adhesion ability. In vitro cellular evaluation revealed that the antibacterial wound dressing exhibited good biocompatibility. Overall, this study provides a feasible method to develop antibacterial and anti-cell adhesive hydrogel, which has a promising potential for wound healing.

Wastewater reuse in agriculture: Prospects and challenges

Sustainable water recycling and wastewater reuse are urgent nowadays considering water scarcity and increased water consumption through human activities. In 2015, United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (UN SDG6) highlighted the necessity of recycling wastewater to guarantee water availability for individuals. Currently, wastewater irrigation (WWI) of crops and agricultural land appears essential. The present work overviews the quality of treated wastewater in terms of soil microbial activities, and discusses challenges and benefits of WWI in line with wastewater reuse in agriculture and aquaculture irrigation. Combined conventional-advanced wastewater treatment processes are specifically deliberated, considering the harmful impacts on human health arising from WWI originating from reuse of contaminated water (salts, organic pollutants, toxic metals, and microbial pathogens i.e., viruses and bacteria). The comprehensive literature survey revealed that, in addition to the increased levels of pathogen and microbial threats to human wellbeing, poorly-treated wastewater results in plant and soil contamination with toxic organic/inorganic chemicals, and microbial pathogens. The impact of long-term emerging pollutants like plastic nanoparticles should also be established in further studies, with the development of standardized analytical techniques for such hazardous chemicals. Likewise, the reliable, long-term and extensive judgment on heavy metals threat to human beings's health should be explored in future investigations.

Exploring the Potential of Artificial Intelligence for Hydrogel Development-A Short Review

AI and ML have emerged as transformative tools in various scientific domains, including hydrogel design. This work explores the integration of AI and ML techniques in the realm of hydrogel development, highlighting their significance in enhancing the design, characterisation, and optimisation of hydrogels for diverse applications. We introduced the concept of AI train hydrogel design, underscoring its potential to decode intricate relationships between hydrogel compositions, structures, and properties from complex data sets. In this work, we outlined classical physical and chemical techniques in hydrogel design, setting the stage for AI/ML advancements. These methods provide a foundational understanding for the subsequent AI-driven innovations. Numerical and analytical methods empowered by AI/ML were also included. These computational tools enable predictive simulations of hydrogel behaviour under varying conditions, aiding in property customisation. We also emphasised AI's impact, elucidating its role in rapid material discovery, precise property predictions, and optimal design. ML techniques like neural networks and support vector machines that expedite pattern recognition and predictive modelling using vast datasets, advancing hydrogel formulation discovery are also presented. AI and ML's have a transformative influence on hydrogel design. AI and ML have revolutionised hydrogel design by expediting material discovery, optimising properties, reducing costs, and enabling precise customisation. These technologies have the potential to address pressing healthcare and biomedical challenges, offering innovative solutions for drug delivery, tissue engineering, wound healing, and more. By harmonising computational insights with classical techniques, researchers can unlock unprecedented hydrogel potentials, tailoring solutions for diverse applications.

Application of Ionic Liquid Crosslinked Hydrogel for Removing Heavy Metal Ions from Water: Different Concentration Ranges with Different Adsorption Mechanisms

Heavy metal wastewater poses a significant environmental challenge due to its harmful effect on organisms and difficult biodegradation. To address this issue, hydrogel has been used as a promising solution for the adsorption of heavy metal ions in water, offering advantages such as low cost, simple design, and environmental friendliness. In this study, we synthetized a novel poly-acrylamide/acrylic acid/vinyl imidazole bromide (PAM/AA/[Vim]Br₂) hydrogel as an effective adsorbent for the removal of Ni^II, Cu^II, Zn^II, and Cr^III from water. The structure of the hydrogel was characterized by using techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By exploring various parameters such as monomer ratio, neutralization degree, crosslinking agent addition amount, and initiator addition amount, the highest swelling ratio of the PAM/AA/[Vim]Br₂ hydrogel reached 40,012%. One of the notable aspects of this study lay in the investigation of the adsorption behavior of the hydrogel towards heavy metal ions at different concentrations. The adsorption isotherm calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed distinct adsorption mechanisms. At low concentrations, the hydrogel exhibits a multilayer physical adsorption mechanism, with heavy metal ion removal rates exceeding 80%; while at high concentrations, it demonstrates a monolayer chemical adsorption mechanism, with heavy metal ion removal rates above 90%. This dual mechanism approach distinguishes our study from previous reports on the removal of heavy metal ions using hydrogels and shows good ion adsorption efficiency at both high and low concentrations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to explore the removal of heavy metal ions from water using hydrogels with such intriguing dual mechanisms. Overall, the utilization of the PAM/PAA/[Vim]Br₂ hydrogel as an adsorbent for heavy metal ion removal presents a promising and innovative approach, contributing to the development of environmentally friendly solutions for heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Radiation fabrication of hybrid activated carbon and functionalized terpolymer hydrogel for sorption of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions

In this work, a hybrid composite of activated carbon (AC) functionalized with terpolymer hydrogel of polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylamide/polyacrylic acid (PVA/PAAm/PAA) was prepared by γ-irradiation and used efficiently for sorption of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions from aquatic solutions. Sewage sludge from the wastewater treatment plant was used to prepare AC, then activated by zinc chloride (ZnCl2) and thermal treatment at 550 °C. The modification of AC by functionalized terpolymer has successfully occurred mainly to limit its precipitation and to increase its adsorption capacity which allowed capable interaction with the metal ions. Different advanced techniques were used to investigate the structure and properties of (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC composite before and after the sorption process. Using 20 kGy is sufficient to get gel fraction of 87.5% and equilibrium swelling was 39.1 g/g. The (PVA/PAm/PAA)/AC composite hydrogel showed a pHpzc at pH ∼3. FTIR and EDS confirmed the successful integration of the functional groups and constituent elements of AC into terpolymer hydrogel components. XRD results confirmed the typical diffraction peaks of AC in the composite and the calculated average crystallite size was 167.4 nm. The SEM morphology of AC appeared as grains distributed well into the composite. The effect of synthesized AC, PVA/PAAm/PAA and (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC sorbents were tested to uptake of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions. The highest uptake was noticed for (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC composite and it was selected for studying the parameters affecting the sorption process such as pH, shaking time, initial concentration, and adsorbent dosage. Results of the experimental data showed that Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second-order kinetic models fit well the sorption process of both Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions with maximum sorption capacities of 173.24 and 160.41 mg/g and uptake percentage of 82.3% and 83.4%, respectively at the optimum conditions of pH 4, 180 min, 100 mg/L metal concentration and 0.01 g adsorbent mass. The thermodynamic parameters indicated endothermic and spontaneous nature of the sorption process. Additionally, the as-prepared composite afford high selectivity and uptake capacity for Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions at pH 4 even in the presence of competing cations; Cd(II), Co(II), Sr(II) and Cs(I). The (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC composite was used efficiently as a unique and selective adsorbent for the sorption of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions.

Preparation of highly stable and ultrasmooth chemically grafted thin films of chitosan

Chitosan-coated surfaces are of great interest for biomedical applications (antibacterial coatings, implants, would healing, single-cell microfluidics…). However, one major limitation of chitosan-based systems is the high solubility of the polymer under acidic aqueous conditions. Herein, we describe a simple procedure to prepare extremely smooth and stable chitosan coatings. In detail, chitosan films with a low degree of N-acetylation and of thicknesses varying from 40 nm to 10 μm were grafted onto epoxy-functionalized silicon wafers via an optimized water-temperature treatment (WTT). The formation of a grafted chitosan network insoluble in acidic aqueous media (pH 3.5) was evidenced and the films were stable for at least 2 days at pH 3.5. The film morphology and the swelling behavior were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and neutron reflectivity, which showed that the film roughness was extremely low. The physical cross-linking of the films was demonstrated using infrared spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Finally, we show that the swelling behavior of such films was largely influenced by the environmental conditions, such as the pH or ionic strength of the solution.

3D printing of polylactic acid: recent advances and opportunities

Bio-based polymers are a class of polymers made by living organisms, a few of them known and commercialized yet. Due to poor mechanical strength and economic constraints, they have not yet seen the extensive application. Instead, they have been an appropriate candidate for biological applications. Growing consumer knowledge of the environmental effect of polymers generated from petrochemical sources and a worldwide transition away from plastics with a lifespan of hundreds of years has resulted in greater interest in such hitherto unattainable sectors. Bio-based polymers come in various forms, including direct or "drop-in" replacements for their petrochemical counterparts with nearly identical properties or completely novel polymers that were previously unavailable, such as polylactide. Few of these bio-based polymers offer significantly improved technical specifications than their alternatives. Polylactic acid (PLA) has been well known in the last decade as a biodegradable thermoplastic source for use in 3DP by the "fused deposition modeling" method. The PLA market is anticipated to accomplish 5.2 billion US dollars in 2020 for its industrial usage. Conversely, 3DP is one of the emerging technologies with immense economic potential in numerous sectors where PLA is one of the critical options as the polymer source due to its environmentally friendly nature, glossiness, multicolor appearance, and ease of printing. The chemical structure, manufacturing techniques, standard features, and current market situation of PLA were examined in this study. This review looks at the process of 3DP that uses PLA filaments in extrusion-based 3DP technologies in particular. Several recent articles describing 3D-printed PLA items have been highlighted.

Electrically conductive carbon-based (bio)-nanomaterials for cardiac tissue engineering

A proper self-regenerating capability is lacking in human cardiac tissue which along with the alarming rate of deaths associated with cardiovascular disorders makes tissue engineering critical. Novel approaches are now being investigated in order to speedily overcome the challenges in this path. Tissue engineering has been revolutionized by the advent of nanomaterials, and later by the application of carbon-based nanomaterials because of their exceptional variable functionality, conductivity, and mechanical properties. Electrically conductive biomaterials used as cell bearers provide the tissue with an appropriate microenvironment for the specific seeded cells as substrates for the sake of protecting cells in biological media against attacking mechanisms. Nevertheless, their advantages and shortcoming in view of cellular behavior, toxicity, and targeted delivery depend on the tissue in which they are implanted or being used as a scaffold. This review seeks to address, summarize, classify, conceptualize, and discuss the use of carbon-based nanoparticles in cardiac tissue engineering emphasizing their conductivity. We considered electrical conductivity as a key affecting the regeneration of cells. Correspondingly, we reviewed conductive polymers used in tissue engineering and specifically in cardiac repair as key biomaterials with high efficiency. We comprehensively classified and discussed the advantages of using conductive biomaterials in cardiac tissue engineering. An overall review of the open literature on electroactive substrates including carbon-based biomaterials over the last decade was provided, tabulated, and thoroughly discussed. The most commonly used conductive substrates comprising graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanofibers in cardiac repair were studied.

Recent advances in aqueous virus removal technologies

The COVID-19 outbreak has triggered a massive research, but still urgent detection and treatment of this virus seems a public concern. The spread of viruses in aqueous environments underlined efficient virus treatment processes as a hot challenge. This review critically and comprehensively enables identifying and classifying advanced biochemical, membrane-based and disinfection processes for effective treatment of virus-contaminated water and wastewater. Understanding the functions of individual and combined/multi-stage processes in terms of manufacturing and economical parameters makes this contribution a different story from available review papers. Moreover, this review discusses challenges of combining biochemical, membrane and disinfection processes for synergistic treatment of viruses in order to reduce the dissemination of waterborne diseases. Certainly, the combination technologies are proactive in minimizing and restraining the outbreaks of the virus. It emphasizes the importance of health authorities to confront the outbreaks of unknown viruses in the future.

Customizing nano-chitosan for sustainable drug delivery

Chitosan is a natural polymer with acceptable biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mechanical stability; hence, it has been widely appraised for drug and gene delivery applications. However, there has been no comprehensive assessment to tailor-make chitosan cross-linkers of various types and functionalities as well as complex chitosan-based semi- and full-interpenetrating networks for drug delivery systems (DDSs). Herein, various fabrication methods developed for chitosan hydrogels are deliberated, including chitosan crosslinking with and without diverse cross-linkers. Tripolyphosphate, genipin and multi-functional aldehydes, carboxylic acids, and epoxides are common cross-linkers used in developing biomedical chitosan for DDSs. Methods deployed for modifying the properties and performance of chitosan hydrogels, via their composite production (semi- and full-interpenetrating networks), are also cogitated here. In addition, recent advances in the fabrication of advanced chitosan hydrogels for drug delivery applications such as oral drug delivery, transdermal drug delivery, and cancer therapy are discussed. Lastly, thoughts on what is needed for the chitosan field to continue to grow is also debated in this comprehensive review article.

Recent Advances in Encapsulation of Flexible Bioelectronic Implants: Materials, Technologies, and Characterization Methods

Bioelectronic implantable systems (BIS) targeting biomedical and clinical research should combine long-term performance and biointegration in vivo. Here, recent advances in novel encapsulations to protect flexible versions of such systems from the surrounding biological environment are reviewed, focusing on material strategies and synthesis techniques. Considerable effort is put on thin-film encapsulation (TFE), and specifically organic-inorganic multilayer architectures as a flexible and conformal alternative to conventional rigid cans. TFE is in direct contact with the biological medium and thus must exhibit not only biocompatibility, inertness, and hermeticity but also mechanical robustness, conformability, and compatibility with the manufacturing of microfabricated devices. Quantitative characterization methods of the barrier and mechanical performance of the TFE are reviewed with a particular emphasis on water-vapor transmission rate through electrical, optical, or electrochemical principles. The integrability and functionalization of TFE into functional bioelectronic interfaces are also discussed. TFE represents a must-have component for the next-generation bioelectronic implants with diagnostic or therapeutic functions in human healthcare and precision medicine.

MIL-125-based nanocarrier decorated with Palladium complex for targeted drug delivery

The aim of this work was to provide a novel approach to designing and synthesizing a nanocomposite with significant biocompatibility, biodegradability, and stability in biological microenvironments. Hence, the porous ultra-low-density materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), have been considered and the MIL-125(Ti) has been chosen due to its distinctive characteristics such as great biocompatibility and good biodegradability immobilized on the surface of the reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Based on the results, the presence of transition metal complexes next to the drug not only can reinforce the stability of the drug on the structure by preparing π–π interaction between ligands and the drug but also can enhance the efficiency of the drug by preventing the spontaneous release. The effect of utilizing transition metal complex beside drug (Doxorubicin (DOX)) on the drug loading, drug release, and antibacterial activity of prepared nanocomposites on the P. aeruginosa and S. aureus as a model bacterium has been investigated and the results revealed that this theory leads to increasing about 200% in antibacterial activity. In addition, uptake, the release of the drug, and relative cell viabilities (in vitro and in vivo) of prepared nanomaterials and biomaterials have been discussed. Based on collected data, the median size of prepared nanocomposites was 156.2 nm, and their biological stability in PBS and DMEM + 10% FBS was screened and revealed that after 2.880 min, the nanocomposite’s size reached 242.3 and 516 nm respectively. The MTT results demonstrated that immobilizing PdL beside DOX leads to an increase of more than 15% in the cell viability. It is noticeable that the AST:ALT result of prepared nanocomposite was under 1.5.

Polyurethane based hybrid ciprofloxacin-releasing wound dressings designed for skin engineering purpose

PURPOSE

Even in the 21st century, chronic wounds still pose a major challenge due to potentially inappropriate treatment options, so the latest wound dressings are hybrid systems that enable clinical management, such as a hybrid of hydrogels, antibiotics and polymers. These wound dressings are mainly used for chronic and complex wounds, which can easily be infected by bacteria.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Six Composite Porous Matrices (CPMs) based on polyurethane (PUR) in alliance with polylactide (PLAs) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared and analyzed using optical microscopy. Three different types of hydrogels and their Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) modified variants' ratios were prepared and analyzed using FTIR, SEM and EDX techniques. Six Hybrid Cipro-Releasing Hydrogel Wound Dressings (H-CRWDs) were also prepared and underwent short-term degradation, Cipro release, microbiology and cell viability measurements.

RESULTS

Average porosity of CPMs was in the range of 69-81%. The pore size of the obtained CPMs was optimal for skin regeneration. Short-term degradation studies revealed degradability in physiological conditions regardless of sample type. A meaningful release was also observed even in short time (21.76 ​± ​0.64 ​μg/mL after 15 ​min). Microbiological tests showed visible inhibition zones. Cell viability tests proved that the obtained H-CRWDs were biocompatible (over 85% of cells).

CONCLUSIONS

A promising hybrid wound dressing was labeled. Simple and cost-effective methods were used to obtain microbiologically active and biocompatible dressings. The results were of importance for the design and development of acceptable solutions in the management of chronic wounds of high potential for infection.

(Nano)platforms in bladder cancer therapy: Challenges and opportunities

Urological cancers are among the most common malignancies around the world. In particular, bladder cancer severely threatens human health due to its aggressive and heterogeneous nature. Various therapeutic modalities have been considered for the treatment of bladder cancer although its prognosis remains unfavorable. It is perceived that treatment of bladder cancer depends on an interdisciplinary approach combining biology and engineering. The nanotechnological approaches have been introduced in the treatment of various cancers, especially bladder cancer. The current review aims to emphasize and highlight possible applications of nanomedicine in eradication of bladder tumor. Nanoparticles can improve efficacy of drugs in bladder cancer therapy through elevating their bioavailability. The potential of genetic tools such as siRNA and miRNA in gene expression regulation can be boosted using nanostructures by facilitating their internalization and accumulation at tumor sites and cells. Nanoparticles can provide photodynamic and photothermal therapy for ROS overgeneration and hyperthermia, respectively, in the suppression of bladder cancer. Furthermore, remodeling of tumor microenvironment and infiltration of immune cells for the purpose of immunotherapy are achieved through cargo-loaded nanocarriers. Nanocarriers are mainly internalized in bladder tumor cells by endocytosis, and proper design of smart nanoparticles such as pH-, redox-, and light-responsive nanocarriers is of importance for targeted tumor therapy. Bladder cancer biomarkers can be detected using nanoparticles for timely diagnosis of patients. Based on their accumulation at the tumor site, they can be employed for tumor imaging. The clinical translation and challenges are also covered in current review.

Synthesis of hydrogels for adsorption of anionic and cationic dyes in water: ionic liquid as a crosslinking agent

In this work, we synthesized an ionic liquid (IL)—(Dimethylamino)ethyl Methacrylate maleate ([DMAEMA]MA) as the crosslinker, through one-pot to synthesized hydrogels with high adsorption capacity for dye in water. Both anionic dyes (methylene blue, rhodamine B) and cationic dyes (congo red, eosin B) could be adsorbed by this type of hydrogel with different adsorption mechanism, and its adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RHB), congo red (CR), eosin B (EB) were 489.1, 463.2, 465.5 and 462 mg/g (amount of dye adsorbed per gram of hydrogel), respectively. The surface structure of the hydrogel before and after adsorption was observed and compared by scanning electron microscope (SEM). After studying the adsorption isotherms of the hydrogel adsorbent, it was found that the hydrogel adsorbent had two adsorption mechanisms. This was not found in reported literatures previously.

Hydrogels are materials with wide applications in several fields, including the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. Their properties such as the capacity of absorbing great amounts of aqueous solutions without losing shape and mechanical properties, as well as loading drugs of different nature, including hydrophobic ones and biomolecules, give an idea of their versatility and promising demand. As they have been explored in a great number of studies for years, many routes of synthesis have been developed, especially for chemical/permanent hydrogels. In the same way, stimuli-responsive hydrogels, also known as intelligent materials, have been explored too, enhancing the regulation of properties such as targeting and drug release. By controlling the particle size, hydrogel on the micro- and nanoscale have been studied likewise and have increased, even more, the possibilities for applications of the so-called XXI century materials. In this paper, we aimed to produce an overview of the recent studies concerning methods of synthesis, biomedical, and pharmaceutical applications of macro-, micro, and nanogels.
