Facile one-pot synthesis of heterostructure SnO2/ZnO photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic dye

Engineering 0D/2D design of zinc sulfide quantum dots encapsulated with yttrium tungstate nanosheets for improving decomposition of organic dyes and doxycycline hydrochloride drug

Herein, it is demonstrated that 0D/2D design of zinc sulfide quantum dots encapsulated with yttrium tungstate nanosheets, which were subsequently used to increase the removal of brilliant blue (BB), methyl red (MR) dyes and doxycycline drug using UV-visible light. The produced ZnS-Y2WO6 nanohybrids exhibited excellent catalytic activity, reaching degradation efficiencies of around 89.92%, 80% and 85.51 % for BB, MR dyes and doxycycline drug, respectively, with a minimum irradiation duration of 120, 60 and 125 min. These nanohybrids outperformed Y2WO6 in terms of photocatalytic efficacy due to enhanced light absorption, efficient charge transfer, and decreased charge carrier recombination between ZnS and Y2WO6 nanoparticles. The synergistic combination of ZnS and Y2WO6 nanoparticles resulted in multiple active sites on the composite surface. Furthermore, the ZnS-Y2WO6 nanohybrids maintained excellent degradation efficiencies of 79.45% and 70.12% for BB and MR dyes, respectively, even after five consecutive cycles, with no significant loss of catalytic activity. The produced ZnS-Y2WO6 nanohybrids were thoroughly analyzed utilizing a variety of analytical methods. Furthermore, the degradation of organic dyes and doxycycline drug related possible mechanism were examined using experimental data, indicating the potential of ZnS-Y2WO6 nanohybrids as excellent photocatalytic materials for oxidizing organic dyes and drugs in aquatic conditions.

Solar light driven enhanced in photocatalytic activity of novel Gd incorporated ZnO/SnO2 heterogeneous nanocomposites

The Gd-doped ZnO/SnO2 nanocomposites with various atomic percentages (0, 0.5, 0.8, and 1.2 at%) of gadolinium (coded as GdZS0, GdZS1, GdZS2, and GdZS3) was synthesis via the sol-gel method and explored for photodegradation against dye solutions exposing solar light irradiation. The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized employing the XRD, FTIR, FE-SEM, Raman spectroscopy, BET analysis and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The FE-SEM results indicated that the formation of nanoparticles to nanoflowers covered with Gd ions was observed with an increased doping concentration of Gd. The optical bandgap was evaluated and found in the range of 3.21-3.27 eV for GdZS nanocomposites. The GdZS nano-photocatalysts were investigated against the degradation of different organic dyes and GdZS3 shows the highest degradation efficiencies of 99.3%, 98.3% and 99.4% towards MO, MB and RhB dyes, respectively at neutral pH in aqueous media. Before and after photodegradation. Biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand tests to make estimations of mineralization. The investigations are very promising for the degradation process in rare earth doped metal oxide nanocomposites. A plausible photodegradation mechanism of synthesized nanocomposites under investigation has also been proposed.

In Silico Study of Interactions between the Methylene Blue Molecule and the (TiO2)20 Cluster by Means of DFT Calculations

In this work, the (TiO2)20 cluster is proposed to adsorb the methylene blue (BM) dye; thus, the quantum parameters to explain the adsorption process are calculated by means of density functional theory calculations. Eight possible configurations are obtained and labeled from M1 to M8. According to the adsorption energy values, they reveal physisorption for at least two cases, and for the rest of the systems, they exhibit chemisorption. The preferential positions that lead to good adsorption for the BM dye are parallel to the semiconductor cluster; however, when one end of the BM dye formed by hydrogen atoms is interacting with the cluster, a weak chemical interaction is reached. The chemical interactions for M4 and M5 systems generate considerable increases of their electronic gap values (E g) with respect to the rest, and this effect is explained based on iso-surfaces of frontier orbitals and electronic charge transference. The chemical interactions between these chemical species are stable under vibrational and thermal criteria. This semiconductor cluster arises as a good candidate to adsorb some dyes like BM.

Synergistic Enhancement of Carrier Migration by SnO2/ZnO@GO Heterojunction for Rapid Degradation of RhB

Organic dyes in natural waters jeopardize human health. Whether semiconductor materials can effectively degrade dyes has become a challenge for scientific research. Based on this, this study rationally prepared different nanocomposites to remove organic dyes effectively. Pure SnO2 quantum dots, ZnO nanosheets, and SnO2/ZnO (ZS) binary nanocomposites are prepared using the hydrothermal method. Subsequently, SnO2/ZnO@GO (ZSG) ternary composites containing different amounts of GO, i.e., ZSG-5, ZSG-15, and ZSG-25, are synthesized by an ultrasonic water bath method, in which ZS was coupled with GO to form Z-type heterojunctions. The ZSG-15 ternary composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B by simulating sunlight. The test results show that the degradation rate of ZSG-15 is about 7.6 times higher than ZnO. The increase in photocatalytic activity is attributed to the synergistic effect of SnO2 and GO to improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers in ZnO. Notably, the large specific surface area of GO increases the reactive sites. Compared with binary nanocomposites, ZSG-15 broadens the response range to light while further accelerating the electron transport rate and improving the photoelectric stability.

Harvesting visible light for enhanced catalytic degradation of wastewater using TiO2@Fe3O4 embedded on two dimensional reduced graphene oxide nanosheets

Carbon-integrated binary metal oxide semiconductors have gained prominence in the last decade as a better material for photocatalytic wastewater treatment technology. In this regard, this research describes the investigation of the binary metal oxide TiO2@Fe3O4 embedded on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets synthesized through a combination of sol-gel, chemical precipitation, and Hummer's processes. Besides, the catalyst is applied for the photocatalytic degradation of organic chlorophenol pollutants. The characterized diffraction results showed the peak broadening of the rGO-TiO2@Fe3O4 composite formed with tetragonal and cubic structures having small crystallite sizes. The TEM observation shows an enormous miniature of TiO2@Fe3O4 nanospheres spread on the folded 2D-rGO nanosheets with a large BET surface area. The XPS result holds the mixed phases of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3. Finally, the catalyst demonstrated a low band gap with extended light absorption towards visible light irradiation. The synergistic interactions between Fe3+ and Fe2+ improved the visible light activity due to the incorporation of rGO, and also possessed good recycling capacity. The increased mobility of electrons at the interfaces of TiO2 and Fe3O4 due to the mixing of rGO results in the separation of charge carriers by elevating the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of chlorophenol.

Revolutionizing the Role of Solar Light Responsive BiVO4/BiOBr Heterojunction Photocatalyst for the Photocatalytic Deterioration of Tetracycline and Photoelectrocatalytic Water Splitting

In this study, a series of BiVO4/BiOBr composites with varying mole ratios were successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal method. The in-situ synthesis strategy facilitated the formation of a close interfacial contact between BiVO4 and BiOBr at the depletion zone, resulting in improved charge segregation, migration, reduced charge recombination, enhanced solar light absorption capacity, promoting narrow band gap, and large surface area. This study investigates the influence of different mole ratios of BiVO4 and BiOBr in a BiVO4/BiOBr nanocomposite on the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC), a pharmaceutical pollutant, and photoelectrocatalytic water splitting (PEC) under solar light irradiation. Maximum decomposition efficiency of ~90.4% (with a rate constant of 0.0159 min-1) for TC was achieved with 0.5 g/L of 3:1 BiVO4: BiOBr (31BVBI) photocatalyst within 140 min. The degraded compounds resulting from the TC abatement were analyzed using GC-MS. Furthermore, TC standards exhibited 78.2% and 87.7% removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC), respectively, while TC tablets showed 64.6% COD removal and 73.8% TOC removal. The PEC water splitting experiments demonstrated that the 31BVBI photoanode achieved the highest photocurrent density of approximately 0.2198 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, resulting in the generation of approximately 1.864 mmolcm-2 s-1 of hydrogen, while remaining stable for 21,600 s. The stability of the photocatalyst was confirmed by post-degradation characterizations, which revealed intact crystalline planes, shape, and surface area. Comparisons with existing physicochemical methods used in industries indicate that the reported photocatalyst possesses strong surface catalytic properties and has the potential for application in industrial wastewater treatment and hydrogen generation, offering an advantageous alternative to costly and time-consuming processes.

Experimental and computational study of metal oxide nanoparticles for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: a review

Photocatalysis is a more proficient technique that involves the breakdown or decomposition of different organic contaminants, various dyes, and harmful viruses and fungi using UV or visible light solar spectrum. Metal oxides are considered promising candidate photocatalysts owing to their low cost, efficiency, simple fabricating method, sufficient availability, and environment-friendliness for photocatalytic applications. Among metal oxides, TiO2 is the most studied photocatalyst and is highly applied in wastewater treatment and hydrogen production. However, TiO2 is relatively active only under ultraviolet light due to its wide bandgap, which limits its applicability because the production of ultraviolet is expensive. At present, the discovery of a photocatalyst of suitable bandgap with visible light or modification of the existing photocatalyst is becoming very attractive for photocatalysis technology. However, the major drawbacks of photocatalysts are the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, the ultraviolet light activity limitations, and low surface coverage. In this review, the most commonly used synthesis method for metal oxide nanoparticles, photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, and applications and toxicity of different dyes are comprehensively highlighted. In addition, the challenges in the photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, strategies to suppress these challenges, and metal oxide studied by density functional theory for photocatalytic applications are described in detail.

Rational construction of ZnO/CuS heterostructures-modified PVDF nanofiber photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic activity

PVDF/ZnO/CuS photocatalysts with ZnO/CuS heterojunctions were synthesized via electrospinning, hydrothermal, and ion-exchange techniques. As matrix materials, electrospun PVDF nanofibers are easy to be recycled and reused. ZnO nanorods anchored on PVDF nanofiber with high specific surface area provide abundant active reaction sites for photocatalysis. While the loaded CuS nanoparticles as a photosensitizer compensate the low quantum efficiency of ZnO and improve the visible-light photocatalytic efficiency. As a result, the PVDF/ZnO/CuS composited photocatalyst exhibits outstanding photocatalytic performance in exposure to UV and visible light owing to the suppressed recombination of electron-hole pairs and widened visible light absorption range. The kinetic constants of PVDF/ZnO/CuS nanocomposites under UV irradiation (9.01 × 10^-3 min^-1) and visible light (6.53 × 10^-3 min^-1) irradiation were 3.66 and 2.53 times higher than that of PVDF/ZnO (2.46 × 10^-3 min^-1 & 2.58 × 10^-3 min^-1), respectively. Furthermore, PVDF/ZnO/CuS nanocomposites demonstrate excellent robustness in terms of recycling and reuse, which is advantageous in practical applications.

Morphology and Photocatalytic Activity of Zinc Oxide Reinforced Polymer Composites: A Mini Review

There is an approximately 3% of fresh water available globally for utilization, while the rest of the water is not available for usage, leaving billions of people with less water. Less water availability means that the majority of water consists of pollutants either in ground water or drinking water, which in turn may have a negative impact on the environment and people. Various methods such as plasma technology, flocculation, neutralization, and disinfection have been utilized for wastewater treatment. The wastewater treatment methods have been found to be selective in terms of the removal of other pollutants, as a result, the majority of them are unable to remove pollutants such as antibiotics at a trace level. In order to ensure that there is a complete removal of pollutants from water, there is a need for the development of alternative wastewater treatment methods. The use of solar light by photocatalysis is an alternative method for the degradation of toxic pollutants. Different photocatalysts such as zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and silver (Ag) have been used in the process of photocatalysis. However, the above photocatalysts were found to have drawbacks such as agglomeration at higher contents and health problems during transportation. To solve the above problem, the nanoparticles were immobilized in various matrices such as polymers and ceramics, with polymers being preferred because of low cost, chemical inertness, and high durability. The current review discusses various methods for the preparation of ZnO and its synergy with other nanoparticles incorporated in various polymer matrices. Because it is known that the preparation method(s) affects the morphology, the morphology and the photocatalytic activity of various ZnO/polymer composites and hybrid systems of ZnO/other nanoparticles/polymer composites are discussed in depth.

Facile synthesis of broom stick like FeOCl/g-C3N5 nanocomposite as novel Z-scheme photocatalysts for rapid degradation of pollutants

A simple and cost-effective route has been utilized for the preparation of a novel lamellar structured FeOCl/g-C₃N₅ nanocomposite as Z-scheme photocatalyst. The preparation method was performed under the ambient temperature conditions without any hazardous chemicals. Various characterization techniques, namely XRD, FESEM, TEM, FT-IR, UV-Vis, DRS, and PL were carried out to analyse the nanocomposite for confirmation of FeOCl/g-C₃N₅ nanocomposite. To evaluate its and visible light degradation performances tetracycline (T-C) was used as target pollutant. Among the optimum loading for the g-C₃N₅ incorporated FeOCl binary nanocomposites, the g-C₃N₅/FeOCl exhibited a superlative degradation performance toward the T-C antibiotic pollutant. The results confirmed that 95% of T-C was degraded within 40 min under photodegradation mechanism. The improved photodegradation performance in degradation of T-C was mainly due to the reduction in electron-hole recombination, broadening in the light absorption by g-C₃N₅ incorporation, which leads to shortening the degradation time. Furthermore, the hydroxyl and superoxide radicals played a major role in the photodegradation process and the possible mechanism was elucidated and proposed. The present work implies a novel, sustainable, and efficient Z-scheme system that may deliver a convenient method for environment remediation.

In-vitro toxicity assessment of a textile dye Eriochrome Black T and its nano-photocatalytic degradation through an innovative approach using Mf-NGr-CNTs-SnO2 heterostructures

The present study aimed to assess the in-vitro toxicity of a popular azodye, Eriochrome Black T (EBT) which may be an environmental hazard causing water pollution if released by textile industries as waste effluents to nearby water ponds. We explored the toxic potential of EBT at 200, 400 and 800 μg/ml concentrations, which were selected based on quantification of EBT present in the pond water near carpet industries. We investigated the permeability of EBT across the organ barriers and found it to be 6.48 ± 0.44% at the highest concentration. EBT also showed up to 26.46 ± 0.533% hemolytic potential on human RBCs. MTT assay revealed toxicity of up to 64.9 ± 10.12%. A dose-dependent increase in intracellular ROS levels and Caspase 3/7 activity was observed and confocal microscopy also demonstrated a similar trend of cellular apoptosis indicating ROS mediated induction of apoptosis as a mechanism of EBT induced cytotoxicity. After establishing the toxicity of EBT, an innovative nano-photocatalytic approach for dye remediation was applied by using as synthesized Mf-NGr-CNTs-SnO₂ heterostructures. This catalyst showed dye degradation potential of up to 82% in 2 h in the presence of sun light. The degraded dye products were tested to have up to 30% reduced cellular toxicity as compared to the parent compound. This work successfully establishes the toxicity of EBT along with devising an innovative approach towards dye degradation where the catalyst is adhered on melamine foam and not being mixed in the effluents directly, thereby, reducing the possibility of catalyst being leached out into the river water.

Strategies to Enhance ZnO Photocatalyst's Performance for Water Treatment: A Comprehensive Review

Despite the photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation using ZnO started in 1910-1911, many challenges are still ahead, and several critical issues have to be addressed. Large band gap, and short life-time of photogenerated electrons and holes are critical issues negatively affect the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. Various approaches have been introduced to overcome these issues including intrinsic doping, extrinsic doping, and heterostructure. This review introduces unique and deep insights into tuning of the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. It starts by description of how to tune the photocatalytic activity of pristine ZnO through tuning its morphology, surface area, exposed face, and intrinsic defects. Afterward, the review explains how the Z-scheme approach succeed to address the redox weakened issue of heterojunction approach. In general, this review provides a clear image that helps the researcher to tune the photocatalytic activity of pristine ZnO and its heterostructure.

Facile construction of S-scheme SnO2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst for improved photoactivity

The SnO2/g-C3N4 composites were fabricated via an annealing mixture of g-C3N4 and SnO2, which were obtained from calcinating melamine and hydrothermal treatment of SnCl₄ solution, respectively. The photocatalytic properties of g-C3N4/SnO2 were studied over the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light, which exhibits a significantly improved photocatalytic activity compared to the single components, g-C3N4 and SnO2. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity of SnO2/g-C3N4 could be described by the S-scheme pathway, in which the effective charge transfer between components is demonstrated toward the suppression in recombination of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs within redox potential conservation. Besides, a new criterion, photochemical space-time yield, was applied to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of our samples.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Deoxynivalenol Using Cerium Doped Titanium Dioxide under Ultraviolet Light Irradiation

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a major mycotoxin with high toxicity that often contaminates grains, foods and feeds. The traditional approaches for DON removal are difficult to meet industry and agriculture demands due to the high stability of the DON molecule. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop green and effective strategies for DON degradation. In this study, a batch of photocatalytic nanomaterials of cerium (Ce) doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) were successfully prepared by sol-gel method. The catalysts were systematically characterized by XRD, HRTEM, FT-IR, UV-Vis and XPS. The catalyst 0.5Ce-TiO2 showed superior photocatalytic activity for DON degradation in aqueous solution under ultraviolet light irradiation, better than that of traditional photocatalyst pure TiO2, and 96% DON with initial concentration of 5.0 mg/L could be degraded in 4 h. In addition, the two possible degradation intermediate products C5H8O3 and C17H18O6 were identified, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism and degradation pathway were studied. The results indicate that Ce doped TiO2 photocatalyst can be used to reduce DON effectively.
