Abstract
Biocompatible, industrially scalable, and opto/electrochemically active biomaterials are promising for biosensor platform design and application. Herein, cyclic oligosaccharide, β-cyclodextrin (BCD), is conjugated with Butein, a chalcone-type polyphenol, via dehydration reaction of the hydroxyl groups of BCD and the benzoyl ring of Butein. Functional group changes in the conjugated BCD-Butein were comprehensively studied using UV-visible absorbance, Fourier transform-infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques. The electrochemical characteristics of BCD-Butein were explored using cyclic voltammetry, showing the reversible redox behavior (2e-/2H+) attributed to the catecholic OH group of Butein. The BCD-Butein-modified electrode exhibits a surface-confined redox process (R2 = 0.99, Ipa and Ipc) at the interface, suitable for external mediatorless sensor studies. An enzymatic biomolecular sensor has been constructed using BCD-Butein-modified glassy carbon and a screen-printed electrode targeting sialic acid as the model clinical biomarker. With the enzyme sialic acid aldolase, BCD-Butein-modified substrate exhibited a selective conversion of sialic acid to N-acetyl-d-mannosamine and pyruvate, with a wide linear detection range (1-100 nM), the lowest detection limit of 0.2 nM, and a quantification limit of 0.69 nM, convenient for clinical threshold diagnosis.

Abstract
D-dimer is a very important biomarker about sepsis, pulmonary thromboembolism and atherosclerosis, thus designing effective and sensitive method for its detection is of great significance. Herein, by synthesizing β-cyclodextrin-carbon nanotube nanohybrid (CNTs-CD) as the carrier to assemble the initial antibody (Ab1) of D-dimer, immobilizing secondary antibody (Ab2) and sulfydryl ferrocene (Fc) on the nanogold (Au) particles surface as the signaling amplifier (Ab2-Au-Fc), a low cost, simple, sensitive and effective sandwich-like electrochemical immunosensing (SEI) platform of D-dimer was proposed in this work for the first time. Briefly, CNTs shows large specific area and superior electroconductivity, and CD provides high host guest recognition ability that could bound with Ab1; meanwhile, the Fc probe offers stable current response which are proportionable positively to the level of D-dimer. Under the best conditions, the designed SEI platform exhibits prominent analytical performances for D-dimer: low detection limit of 3.0 ng mL-1 and large linearity of 10.0-800.0 ng mL-1. In addition, the selectivity, stability and reproducibility as well as real applications of the proposed SEI assay were evaluated and the obtained results are satisfactory.

Abstract
Curcumin is a natural polyphenol derived from turmeric (Curcuma longa) root that has been used for centuries as a spice, coloring agent, and medicine. Curcumin presents anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial, antiviral, antimalarial, hepatoprotective, thrombosuppressive, cardiovascular, hypoglycemic, antiarthritic, and anti-neurodegenerative properties. It scavenges different forms of free radicals and acts on transcription factors, growth factors and their receptors, cytokines, enzymes, and genes, regulating cell proliferation and apoptosis. Curcumin is electroactive, and a relationship between its electron transfer properties and radical-scavenging activity has been highlighted. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the curcumin electron transfer reactions, with emphasis on the controversial aspects related to its oxidation mechanism. The final sections will focus on the electroanalysis of curcumin in natural products, highlighting the most important sensing strategies, based on functional electrodes and nanostructured materials, essential for the development of more efficient in vitro methods of detection and quantification of curcumin in food samples, supplements, and nutripharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Curcumin (CU) is a polyphenolic compound extracted from turmeric, a well-known dietary spice. Since it has been shown that CU exerts beneficial effects on human health, interest has increased in its use but also in its analysis in different matrices. CU has an antioxidant character and is electroactive due to the presence of phenolic groups in its molecule. This paper reviews the data reported in the literature regarding the use of electrochemical techniques for the assessment of CU antioxidant activity and the investigation of the voltammetric behavior at different electrodes of free or loaded CU on various carriers. The performance characteristics and the analytical applications of the electrochemical methods developed for CU analysis are compared and critically discussed. Examples of voltammetric investigations of CU interaction with different metallic ions or of CU or CU complexes with DNA as well as the CU applications as electrode modifiers for the enhanced detection of various chemical species are also shown.

Abstract
Curcumin (Cur) possesses diverse biological and pharmacologic effects. It is widely used as a food additive and therapeutic medicine. A study to determine a sensitive detection method for Cur is necessary and meaningful. In this work, double rare earth ions co-doped fluorescent coordination polymer nanoparticles (CPNPs) were developed for the Cur detection. The CPNPs were synthesized by using adenosine monophosphate (AMP) as bridge ligands via coordination self-assembly with Ce3+ and Tb3+. The AMP-Ce/Tb CPNPs exhibited the characteristic green fluorescence of Tb3+ and had high luminescence efficiency. Under the optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity of AMP-Ce/Tb CPNPs could be significantly quenched by Cur. The fluorescence quenching extent at λex/λem of 300 nm/544 nm showed a good linear relationship with the Cur concentration in the range of 10 to 1000 nM. The detection limit was as low as 8.0 nM (S/N = 3). This method was successfully applied to the determination of Cur in real samples with satisfactory results. The luminescence mechanism of AMP-Ce/Tb CPNPs and the fluorescence quenching mechanism of the CPNPs by Cur were both examined.

Activated cascade effect for dual-mode ratiometric and smartphone-assisted visual detection of curcumin and F - based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots. Abstract
The growing persistence of harmful ion or drug molecular residues has always been considered as a matter of concern due to its importance in biological and environmental processes, which requires taking measures to maintain environmental health sustainably and effectively. Inspired by the multi-system and visual quantitative detection of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs), we develop a novel cascade nano-system based on dual emission carbon dots for on-site visual quantitative detection of curcumin and fluoride ion (F-). Herein, tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (Tris) and m-dihydroxybenzene (m-DHB) are elected as reaction precursors to synthesize dual-emission N-CDs by a one-step hydrothermal method. The obtained N-CDs exhibit dual emission peaks at 426 nm (blue) and 528 nm (green) with quantum yields of 53 % and 71 %, respectively. Then, trace curcumin and F- intelligent off-on-off sensing probe is formed by taking advantage of the activated cascade effect. As for the occurrence of inner filter effect (IFE) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), the green fluorescence of N-CDs quenches remarkably, called as OFF initial state. Then the curcumin-F- complex leads to the hypochromatic shift of the absorption band from 532 to 430 nm, which activates the green fluorescence of N-CDs, named as ON state. Meanwhile, the blue fluorescence of N-CDs is quenched due to the FRET, called as OFF terminal state. This system shows good linear relationships from 0 to 35 μM and 0 to 40 μM with low detection limits of 29 nM and 42 nM for curcumin and F- ratiometric detection, respectively. Moreover, a smartphone-assisted analyzer is developed for on-site quantitative detection. Furthermore, we design a logic gate for logistics information storage, which proves the possibility of a logic gate based on N-CDs in practical application. Thus, our work will provide an effective strategy for environmental quantitative monitoring and information storage encryption.

Abstract
In the present work, we reported on a method to combine amino β-cyclodextrins (CD1) with reduced graphene oxide (obtained by the electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide, erGO) to produce a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with both CD1 and erGO (CD1-erGO/GCE). This procedure avoids the use of organic solvents such as hydrazine or long reaction times and high temperatures. The material combining both CD1 and erGO (CD1-erGO/GCE) was characterized by SEM, ATR-FTIR, Raman, XPS, and electrochemical techniques. As proof-of-concept, the determination of the pesticide carbendazim was carried out. The spectroscopic measurements, especially XPS, proved that CD1 was covalently attached to the surface of the erGO/GCE electrode. The attachment of cyclodextrin at the reduced graphene oxide produced an increase in the electrochemical behavior of the electrode. The cyclodextrin-functionalized reduced graphene oxide, CD1-erGO/GCE, showed a larger sensitivity (1.01 μA/μM) and a lower limit of detection for carbendazim (LOD = 0.50 μM) compared with the non-functionalized material, erGO/GCE, (sensitivity = 0.63 μA/μM and LOD = 4.32 μM, respectively). Overall, the results of the present work show that this simple method is suitable to attach cyclodextrins to graphene oxide, maintaining their inclusion abilities.

Abstract
The current research presents the evaluation of supramolecular proficiency of the designed platform for electrocatalytic determination of pernicious food colorants, amaranth and fast green. The approach involving surface modification of glassy carbon electrode with beta cyclodextrin decorated strontium ferrite reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (SFrGO-βCD) to ensure fast and reversible electro-oxidation of hydroxyl groups of the colorant molecules. The synergy between SF and rGO facilitated the sensor with enhanced surface area and conductivity through faradic redox reaction. Tremendous decrease in the obtained values of peak separation potential and impedance as manifested in CV and EIS analysis, enabled by electrostatic interactions between surface functionalities of rGO and βCD has resulted in the significant augmentation of sensitivity. The value of charge transfer coefficient, number of electrons involved, nature of electron transport process at electrode electrolyte interface during the analysis of electrochemical detection were explored through CV experiments. Food samples analysis (without spiking) utilizing screen printed electrode manifested the sensor as portable device for real time monitoring. Outstanding detection limit (0.022 nM for amaranth and 0.051 nM for fast green), excellent regenerability (Relative standard deviation less than 3%) and apparent recovery rate (above 90%) of the modified electrode presented a colossal potential for the development of sustainable and commercially competitive electrochemical sensor in food sector.

Abstract
Exposure to hydroquinone (HQ) can cause various health hazards and negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, we developed an efficient electrochemical sensor to detect and quantify HQ based on palladium nanoparticles deposited in a porous silicon-polypyrrole-carbon black nanocomposite (Pd@PSi-PPy-C)-fabricated glassy carbon electrode. The structural and morphological characteristics of the newly fabricated Pd@PSi-PPy-C nanocomposite were investigated utilizing FESEM, TEM, EDS, XPS, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy. The exceptionally higher sensitivity of 3.0156 μAμM-1 cm-2 and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.074 μM were achieved for this innovative electrochemical HQ sensor. Applying this novel modified electrode, we could detect wide-ranging HQ (1-450 μM) in neutral pH media. This newly fabricated HQ sensor showed satisfactory outcomes during the real sample investigations. During the analytical investigation, the Pd@PSi-PPy-C/GCE sensor demonstrated excellent reproducibility, repeatability, and stability. Hence, this work can be an effective method in developing a sensitive electrochemical sensor to detect harmful phenol derivatives for the green environment.

Abstract
The relatively weak microbial adhesion is a bottleneck in improving the power generation performance of microbial fuel cell (MFC). Anode modification is a simple and effective method to solve this problem. A new type of β-cyclodextrin/polydopamine modified carbon felt anode was prepared, and the effects of β-cyclodextrin/polydopamine modified anode on the main performance indexes such as power density and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of MFC were evaluated. The maximum power density and the output electric energy during the test period of MFC using the modified anode were 102 mW/m2 and 84.96 J, which were 364% and 295.3% higher than those of MFC with conventional carbon felt anode, respectively; and the COD removal rate was 124.4% higher than that of MFC with unmodified anode. Modifying the anode with β-cyclodextrin-polyacyclic composite materials is an effective method to improve the overall performance of MFC.

Abstract
Convenient and sensitive detection of active analytes in complex matrix is crucial in biological, medical, and environmental analysis. Silica nanochannel array film (SNF) equipped electrochemical sensors have shown excellent anti-fouling performance in direct analysis of complex samples. In this work, we demonstrated an electrochemical sensor with anti-fouling performance for highly sensitive detection of acetaminophen (APAP) based on SNF supported by ß-cyclodextrin-graphene (CDG) nanocomposite modified Au film electrode (AuF). Because of their rich surface hydroxyls and 2D lamellar structure, CDG on AuF can serve as the nanoadhesive for compact binding SNF, which can be grown by electrochemical assisted self-assembly method in a few seconds. Attributable to the electrocatalytic property of graphene and the synergistic enrichment from both CD and SNF nanochannels towards analyte, the SNF/CDG/AuF sensor demonstrates sensitive detection of acetaminophen ranged from 0.2 to 50 μM with an ultralow limit-of-detection of 14 nM. Taking advantage of the anti-fouling ability of SNF, the sensor is able to realize accurate and convenient analysis of APAP in commercially available paracetamol tablets.

Abstract
Curcumin, an active ingredient in Curcuma longa, which possesses good biological and pharmacological activities, is effective in treating many diseases. Developing simple and sensitive methods for the detection of curcumin is of great significance. In this study, novel water-dispersible silicon quantum dots (SiQDs), which can sensitively respond to curcumin through fluorescent and colorimetric dual modes were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal treatment of N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl]-ethylenediamine (DAMO) and p-phenylenediamine. The fluorescence of SiQDs could be remarkably quenched by curcumin via the inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching effect (SQE). A good linear relationship was obtained in the range of 0.25-75 μM with a detection limit of 91 nM. More interestingly, curcumin could also be visually detected using SiQDs via an obvious color change of the solution from pale yellow to orange-red, which allows the establishment of a sensitive colorimetric method for curcumin detection in the linear range of 0.05-57.5 μM with a detection limit of 32 nM. The proposed method was successfully applied to detect curcumin in health care products and spices. Notably, to realize rapid and convenient visual detection of curcumin, a paper sensor was also fabricated.

Abstract
A three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide nanomaterial with β-cyclodextrin modified glassy carbon electrode (3D-rGO/β-CD/GCE) was constructed and used to detect the electrochemical behavior of dopamine (DA). The nanocomposite materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), Raman spectrogram and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which showed that β-CD was well modified on 3D graphene with a porous structure. The electrochemical properties of different modified electrodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), proving the highest electron transfer rate of the 3D-rGO/β-CD modified electrode. The experimental conditions such as scan rate, pH, enrichment time and layer thickness were optimized. Under the best experimental conditions, DA was detected by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) by 3D-rGO/β-CD/GCE with excellent electrocatalytic ability and satisfactory recognition ability, resulting in a wide linear range of 0.5-100 μM and a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.013 μM. The modified electrode based on 3D-rGO/β-CD nanocomposites is promising in the field of electrochemical sensors due to its high sensitivity and other excellent properties.

Abstract
A modest, efficient, and sensitive chemically modified electrode was fabricated for sensing curcumin (CRC) through an electrochemically polymerized titan yellow (TY) modified carbon paste electrode (PTYMCPE) in phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.0). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) approaches were used for CRC detection. PTYMCPE interaction with CRC suggests that the electrode exhibits admirable electrochemical response as compared to bare carbon paste electrode (BCPE). Under the optimized circumstances, a linear response of the electrode was observed for CRC in the concentration range 2 × 10−6 M to 10 × 10−6 M with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10.94 × 10−7 M. Moreover, the effort explains that the PTYMCPE electrode has a hopeful approach for the electrochemical resolution of biologically significant compounds. Additionally, the proposed electrode has demonstrated many advantages such as easy preparation, elevated sensitivity, stability, and enhanced catalytic activity, and can be successfully applied in real sample analysis.

Abstract
Designing complex-forming biodegradable and biocompatible electrospun mats (EMs) by incorporating β- cyclodextrin (β-CD) into polylactic acid (PLA)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) (70:30 w/w) blend based polyester matrix. The influence of β-CD loading on the morphological, thermal, and microstructural properties was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The studies revealed the presence of characteristic interactions between the polymer matrix and β-CD moieties. Further, the quasi-static mechanical properties of EMs were evaluated using a universal testing machine. An enhancement in modulus and strength was obtained for ∼ 2.5-5 phr of β-CD content and beyond ∼ 5 phr of β-CD content, the mechanical properties of EMs were observed to deteriorate. The contact angle studies indicated a decrease in hydrophobicity of PLA/PCL-based EMs with the increase in β-CD content. The swelling and weight loss studies in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) indicated a subsequent release of β-CD from the EMs. FT-IR and 1H NMR spectra elucidated the removal of curcumin from ethanol-water solutions and its simultaneous encapsulation in β-CD hydrophobic cavities (released) of fabricated EMs. Thus, the study demonstrates the development of aliphatic polyester-based biodegradable-functional EMs with tunable physico-mechanical properties for biomedical applications, facilitating encapsulation and rapid removal of waste hydrophobic ultrafine molecules from the system.

Abstract
This work is dedicated to the investigation of drug-release control by a direct effect of degradation from biodegradable metallic surfaces. Degradation behaviors characterized by surface morphology, immersion, and electrochemical techniques demonstrated that curcumin-coated zinc (c-Zn) had a higher degradation rate compared to curcumin-coated Fe (c-Fe). High anodic dissolution rate due to the higher degradation rate and widely extended groove-like degradation structure of c-Zn propelled a higher curcumin release. On the other hand, a slower curcumin release rate shown by c-Fe scaffolds is ascribed to its lower anodic dissolution and to its pitting degradation regime with relatively smaller pits. These findings illuminate the remarkable advantage of different degradation behaviors of degradable metallic surfaces in directly controlling the drug release without the need for external electrical stimulus.
