Crystal engineering of a rectangular coordination network to enable xylenes selectivity over ethylbenzene

Reversible Phase Transformations in a Double-Walled Diamondoid Coordination Network with a Stepped Isotherm for Methane

Flexible metal-organic materials (FMOMs) with stepped isotherms can offer enhanced working capacity in storage applications such as adsorbed natural gas (ANG) storage. Unfortunately, whereas >1000 FMOMs are known, only a handful exhibit methane uptake of >150 cm3/cm3 at 65 atm and 298 K, conditions relevant to ANG. Here, we report a double-walled 2-fold interpenetrated diamondoid (dia) network, X-dia-6-Ni, [Ni2L4(μ-H2O)]n, comprising a new azo linker ligand, L- (L- = (E)-3-(pyridin-4-yldiazenyl)benzoate) and 8-connected dinuclear molecular building blocks. X-dia-6-Ni exhibited gas (CO2, N2, CH4) and liquid (C8 hydrocarbons)-induced reversible transformations between its activated narrow-pore β phase and γ, a large-pore phase with ca. 33% increase in unit cell volume. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) studies of the as-synthesized phase α, β, and γ revealed that structural transformations were enabled by twisting of the azo moiety and/or deformation of the MBB. Further insight into these transformations was gained from variable temperature powder XRD and in situ variable pressure powder XRD. Low-temperature N2 and CO2 sorption revealed stepped Type F-II isotherms with saturation uptakes of 422 and 401 cm3/g, respectively. X-dia-6-Ni exhibited uptake of 200 cm3/cm3 (65 atm, 298 K) and a high CH4 working capacity of 166 cm3/cm3 (5-65 bar, 298 K, 33 cycles), the third highest value yet reported for an FMOM and the highest value for an FMOM with a Type F-II isotherm.

Modulation of Water Vapor Sorption by Pore Engineering in Isostructural Square Lattice Topology Coordination Networks

We report a crystal-engineering study conducted upon a platform of three mixed-linker square lattice (sql) coordination networks of general formula [Zn(Ria)(bphy)] [bphy = 1,2-bis(pyridin-4-yl)hydrazine, H2Ria = 5-position-substituted isophthalic acid, and R = -Br, -NO2, and -OH; compounds 1-3]. Analysis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data of 1-2 and the simulated crystal structure of 3 revealed that 1-3 are isomorphous and sustained by bilayers of sql networks linked by hydrogen bonds. Although similar pore shapes and sizes exist in 1-3, distinct isotherm shapes (linear and S shape) and uptakes (2.4, 11.6, and 13.3 wt %, respectively) were observed. Ab initio calculations indicated that the distinct water sorption properties can be attributed to the R groups, which offer a range of hydrophilicity. Calculations indicated that the significantly lower experimental uptake in compound 1 can be attributed to a constricted channel. The calculated water-binding sites provide insights into how adsorbed water molecules bond to the pore walls, with the strongest interactions, water-hydroxyl hydrogen bonding, observed for 3. Overall, this study reveals how pore engineering can result in large variations in water sorption properties in an isomorphous family of rigid porous coordination networks.

Effect of Polymorphism on the Sorption Properties of a Flexible Square-Lattice Topology Coordination Network

The stimulus-responsive behavior of coordination networks (CNs), which switch between closed (nonporous) and open (porous) phases, is of interest because of its potential utility in gas storage and separation. Herein, we report two polymorphs of a new square-lattice (sql) topology CN, X-sql-1-Cu, of formula [Cu(Imibz)2]n (HImibz = {[4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenylimino]methyl}benzoic acid), isolated from the as-synthesized CN X-sql-1-Cu-(MeOH)2·2MeOH, which subsequently transformed to a narrow pore solvate, X-sql-1-Cu-A·MeOH, upon mild activation (drying in air or heating at 333 K under nitrogen). X-sql-1-Cu-A·MeOH contains MeOH in cavities, which was removed through exposure to vacuum for 2 h, yielding the nonporous (closed) phase X-sql-1-Cu-A. In contrast, a more dense polymorph, X-sql-1-Cu-B, was obtained by exposing X-sql-1-Cu-(MeOH)2·2MeOH directly to vacuum for 2 h. Gas sorption studies conducted on X-sql-1-Cu-A and X-sql-1-Cu-B revealed different switching behaviors to two open phases (X-sql-1-Cu·CO2 and X-sql-1-Cu·C2H2), with different gate-opening threshold pressures for CO2 at 195 K and C2H2 at 278 K. Coincident CO2 sorption and in situ powder X-ray diffraction studies at 195 K revealed that X-sql-1-Cu-A transformed to X-sql-1-Cu-B after the first sorption cycle and that the CO2-induced switching transformation was thereafter reversible. The results presented herein provide insights into the relationship between two polymorphs of a CN and the effect of polymorphism upon gas sorption properties. To the best of our knowledge, whereas sql networks such as X-sql-1-Cu are widely studied in terms of their structural and sorption properties, this study represents only the second example of an in-depth study of the sorption properties of polymorphic sql networks.

Insight into the Gas-Induced Phase Transformations in a 2D Switching Coordination Network via Coincident Gas Sorption and In Situ PXRD

Switching coordination networks (CNs) that reversibly transform between narrow or closed pore (cp) and large pore (lp) phases, though fewer than their rigid counterparts, offer opportunities for sorption-related applications. However, their structural transformations and switching mechanisms remain underexplored at the molecular level. In this study, we conducted a systematic investigation into a 2D switching CN, [Ni(bpy)2(NCS)2]n, sql-1-Ni-NCS (1 = bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine), using coincident gas sorption and in situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) under low-temperature conditions. Gas adsorption measurements revealed that C2H4 (169 K) and C2H6 (185 K) exhibited single-step type F-IVs sorption isotherms with sorption uptakes of around 180-185 cm3 g-1, equivalent to four sorbate molecules per formula unit. Furthermore, parallel in situ PXRD experiments provided insight into sorbate-dependent phase switching during the sorption process. Specifically, CO2 sorption induced single-step phase switching (path I) solely between cp and lp phases consistent with the observed single-step type F-IVs sorption isotherm. By contrast, intermediate pore (ip) phases emerged during C2H4 and C2H6 desorption as well as C3H6 adsorption, although they remained undetectable in the sorption isotherms. To our knowledge, such a cp-lp-ip-cp transformation (path II) induced by C2H4/6 and accompanied by single-step type F-IVs sorption isotherms represents a novel type of phase transition mechanism in switching CNs. By virtue of Rietveld refinements and molecular simulations, we elucidated that the phase transformations are governed by cooperative local and global structural changes involving NCS- ligand reorientation, bpy ligand twist and rotation, cavity edge (Ni-bpy-Ni) deformation, and interlayer expansion and sliding.

Highly Selective p-Xylene Separation from Mixtures of C8 Aromatics by a Nonporous Molecular Apohost

High and increasing production of separation of C8 aromatic isomers demands the development of purification methods that are efficient, scalable, and inexpensive, especially for p-xylene, PX, the largest volume C8 commodity. Herein, we report that 4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-phenyl-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (TPBD), a molecular compound that can be prepared and scaled up via solid-state synthesis, exhibits exceptional PX selectivity over each of the other C8 isomers, o-xylene (OX), m-xylene (MX), and ethylbenzene (EB). The apohost or α form of TPBD was found to exhibit conformational polymorphism in the solid state enabled by rotation of its triazole and benzene rings. TPBD-αI and TPBD-αII are nonporous polymorphs that transformed to the same PX inclusion compound, TPBD-PX, upon contact with liquid PX. TPBD enabled highly selective capture of PX, as established by competitive slurry experiments involving various molar ratios in binary, ternary, and quaternary mixtures of C8 aromatics. Binary selectivity values for PX as determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gas chromatography ranged from 22.4 to 108.4, setting new benchmarks for both PX/MX (70.3) and PX/EB (59.9) selectivity as well as close to benchmark selectivity for PX/OX (108.4). To our knowledge, TPBD is the first material of any class to exhibit such high across-the-board PX selectivity from quaternary mixtures of C8 aromatics under ambient conditions. Crystallographic and computational studies provide structural insight into the PX binding site in TPBD-PX, whereas thermal stability and capture kinetics were determined by variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction and slurry tests, respectively. That TPBD offers benchmark PX selectivity and facile recyclability makes it a prototypal molecular compound for PX purification or capture under ambient conditions.

Switching Adsorbent Layered Material that Enables Stepwise Capture of C8 Aromatics via Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformations

Separation of the C8 aromatic isomers, xylenes (PX, MX, and OX) and ethylbenzene (EB), is important to the petrochemical industry. Whereas physisorptive separation is an energy-efficient alternative to current processes, such as distillation, physisorbents do not generally exhibit strong C8 selectivity. Herein, we report the mixed-linker square lattice (sql) coordination network [Zn2(sba)2(bis)]n·mDMF (sql-4,5-Zn, H2sba or 4 = 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid, bis or 5 = trans-4,4'-bis(1-imidazolyl)stilbene) and its C8 sorption properties. sql-4,5-Zn was found to exhibit high uptake capacity for liquid C8 aromatics (∼20.2 wt %), and to the best of our knowledge, it is the first sorbent to exhibit selectivity for PX, EB, and MX over OX for binary, ternary, and quaternary mixtures from gas chromatography. Single-crystal structures of narrow-pore, intermediate-pore, and large-pore phases provided insight into the phase transformations, which were enabled by flexibility of the linker ligands and changes in the square grid geometry and interlayer distances. This work adds to the library of two-dimensional coordination networks that exhibit high uptake, thanks to clay-like expansion, and strong selectivity, thanks to shape-selective binding sites, for C8 isomers.

Supramolecular isomerism and structural flexibility in coordination networks sustained by cadmium rod building blocks

Bifunctional N-donor carboxylate linkers generally afford dia and sql topology coordination networks of general formula ML₂ that are based upon the MN₂(CO₂)₂ molecular building block (MBB). Herein, we report on a new N-donor carboxylate linker, β-(3,4-pyridinedicarboximido)propionate (PyImPr), which afforded Cd(PyImPr)₂via reaction of PyImPrH with Cd(acetate)₂·2H₂O. We observed that, depending upon whether Cd(PyImPr)₂ was prepared by layering or solvothermal methods, 2D or 3D supramolecular isomers, respectively, of Cd(PyImPr)₂ were isolated. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that both supramolecular isomers are comprised of the same carboxylate bridged rod building block, RBB. We were interested to determine if the ethylene moiety of PyImPr could enable structural flexibility. Indeed, open-to-closed structural transformations occurred upon solvent removal for both phases, but they were found to be irreversible. A survey of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) was conducted to analyse the relative frequency of RBB topologies in related ML₂ coordination networks in order to provide insight from a crystal engineering perspective.

Water vapour and gas induced phase transformations in an 8-fold interpenetrated diamondoid metal-organic framework

In this work, we report the synthesis, structural characterisation and sorption properties of an 8-fold interpenetrated diamondoid (dia) metal-organic framework (MOF) that is sustained by a new extended linker ligand, [Cd(Imibz)₂], X-dia-2-Cd, HImibz or 2 = 4-((4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenylimino)methyl)benzoic acid. X-dia-2-Cd was found to exhibit reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformations between four distinct phases: an as-synthesised (from N,N-dimethylformamide) wide-pore phase, X-dia-2-Cd-α; a narrow-pore phase, X-dia-2-Cd-β, formed upon exposure to water; a narrow-pore phase obtained by activation, X-dia-2-Cd-γ; a medium-pore CO₂-loaded phase X-dia-2-Cd-δ. While the space group remained constant in the four phases, the cell volumes and calculated void space ranged from 4988.7 ų and 47% (X-dia-2-Cd-α), respectively, to 3200.8 ų and 9.1% (X-dia-2-Cd-γ), respectively. X-dia-2-Cd-γ also exhibited a water vapour-induced structural transformation to the water-loaded X-dia-2-Cd-β phase, resulting in an S-shaped sorption isotherm. The inflection point occurred at 18% RH with negligible hysteresis on the desorption profile. Water vapour temperature-humidity swing cycling (60% RH, 300 K to 0% RH, 333 K) indicated hydrolytic stability of X-dia-2-Cd and working capacity was retained after 128 cycles of sorbent regeneration. CO₂ (at 195 K) was also observed to induce a structural transformation in X-dia-2-Cd-γ and in situ PXRD studies at 1 bar of CO₂, 195 K revealed the formation of X-dia-2-Cd-δ, which exhibited 31% larger unit cell volume than X-dia-2-Cd-γ.

Kinetic trapping of 2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)benzene and ZnI2 into M12L8 poly-[n]-catenanes using solution and solid-state processes

Here, we show that in a supramolecular system with more than 20 building blocks forming large icosahedral M₁₂L₈ metal-organic cages (MOCs), using the instant synthesis method, it is possible to kinetically trap and control the formation of interlocking M₁₂L₈ nanocages, giving rare M₁₂L₈ TPB-ZnI₂ poly-[n]-catenane. The catenanes are obtained in a one-pot reaction, selectively as amorphous (a1) or crystalline states, as demonstrated by powder X-ray diffraction (powder XRD), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and ¹H NMR. The 300 K M₁₂L₈ poly-[n]-catenane single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) structure including nitrobenzene (1) indicates strong guest binding with the large M₁₂L₈ cage (i.e., internal volume ca. 2600 ų), allowing its structural resolution. Conversely, slow self-assembly (5 days) leads to a mixture of the M₁₂L₈ poly-[n]-catenane and a new TPB-ZnI₂ (2) coordination polymer (i.e., thermodynamic product), as revealed by SC-XRD. The neat grinding solid-state synthesis also yields amorphous M₁₂L₈ poly-[n]-catenane (a1'), but not coordination polymers, selectively in 15 min. The dynamic behavior of the M₁₂L₈ poly-[n]-catenanes demonstrated by the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation upon the uptake of ortho-, meta- and para-xylenes shows the potential of M₁₂L₈ poly-[n]-catenanes as functional materials in molecular separation. Finally, combining SC-XRD of 1 and DFT calculations specific for the solid-state, the role of the guests in the stability of the 1D chains of M₁₂L₈ nanocages is reported. Energy interactions such as interaction energies (E), lattice energies (E*), host-guest energies (E_host-guest) and guest-guest energies (E_guest-guest) were analysed considering the X-ray structure with and without the nitrobenzene guest. Not only the synthetic control achieved in the synthesis of the M₁₂L₈ MOCs but also their dynamic behavior either in the crystalline or amorphous phase are sufficient to raise scientific interest in areas ranging from fundamental to applied sides of chemistry and material sciences.

Structural Phase Transformations Induced by Guest Molecules in a Nickel-Based 2D Square Lattice Coordination Network

Herein, we report the crystal structure and guest binding properties of a new two-dimensional (2D) square lattice (sql) topology coordination network, sql-(azpy)(pdia)-Ni, which is comprised of two linker ligands with diazene (azo) moieties, (E)-1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)diazene(azpy) and (E)-5-(phenyldiazenyl)isophthallate(pdia). sql-(azpy)(pdia)-Ni underwent guest-induced switching between a closed (nonporous) β phase and several open (porous) α phases, but unlike the clay-like layer expansion to distinct phases previously reported in switching sql networks, a continuum of phases was formed. In effect, sql-(azpy)(pdia)-Ni exhibited elastic-like properties induced by adaptive guest binding. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) studies of the α phases revealed that the structural transformations were enabled by the pendant phenyldiazenyl moiety on the pdia^2- ligand. This moiety functioned as a type of hinge to enable parallel slippage of layers and interlayer expansion for the following guests: N,N-dimethylformamide, water, dichloromethane, para-xylene, and ethylbenzene. The slippage angle (interplanar distances) ranged from 54.133° (4.442 Å) in the β phase to 69.497° (5.492 Å) in the ethylbenzene-included phase. Insight into the accompanying phase transformations was also gained from variable temperature powder XRD studies. Dynamic water vapor sorption studies revealed a stepped isotherm with little hysteresis that was reversible for at least 100 cycles. The isotherm step occurred at ca. 50% relative humidity (RH), the optimal RH value for humidity control.

Adsorbate-dependent phase switching in the square lattice topology coordination network [Ni(4,4'-bipyridine)2(NCS)2]n

Switching coordination networks (CNs) featuring stepped sorption isotherms that are accompanied by phase changes offer promise for gas storage and separation applications. However, their responsiveness to different adsorbates remains largely understudied. Herein, we report the variable switching behaviour of a previously known square lattice (sql) topology CN, [Ni(4,4'-bipyridine)₂(NCS)₂] (sql-1-Ni-NCS), with respect to nine gaseous adsorbates.

3D-Frameworks and 2D-networks of lanthanide coordination polymers with 3-pyridylpyrazole: photophysical and magnetic properties

A series of 15 lanthanide-containing coordination polymers, both 3D- and 2D-networks, as well as complexes of Ln-trichlorides with 3-(3-pyridyl)pyrazole (3-PyPzH), were synthesized. A large structural diversity is observed depending on the ligand content: 3∞[Ln(3-PyPzH)Cl₃], Ln = Eu and Gd, of sra topology, 2∞[Sm(3-PyPzH)Cl₃], 2∞[Ln₂(3-PyPzH)₃Cl₆]·2solv, Ln = Eu³⁺, Tb³⁺, Dy³⁺, Ho³⁺ and Er³⁺, solv = Tol and MeCN, of sql topology and 2∞[Ln(3-PyPzH₂)Cl₄], Ln = La and Nd, of hcb topology with salt like complexes of the formula [(3-PyPzH₂)][Ln(3-PyPzH)₂Cl₄], Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy and Ho. The products were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, high-temperature X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry (DTA/TG) combined with mass spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), IR-spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrophotometry, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility. Absorption spectroscopy shows ion-specific 4f-4f transitions that can be assigned to Sm³⁺, Eu³⁺, Dy³⁺, Ho³⁺ and Er³⁺ in a wide range from the UV-VIS to NIR region. An excellent antenna effect through ligand-metal energy transfer was observed in 2∞[Tb₂(3-PyPzH)₃Cl₆]·2solv, leading to high efficiency of the luminescence indicated by a quantum yield up to 76%. Direct current magnetic susceptibility studies reveal the absence of interatomic interaction for Dy³⁺ and Er³⁺ and weak ferromagnetic interaction for Ho³⁺. Thermal analysis shows good stability up to 365 °C for 2∞[Ho₂(3-PyPzH)₃Cl₆]·2MeCN.

Reversible single-crystal to single-crystal phase transformation between a new Werner clathrate and its apohost

In this work, we report the synthesis and structural characterisation of the ligand 2-(pyridin-3-yl)-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione, 5, its isostructural Werner complexes ML4(NCS)2 (L = 5; M = Co(II) and Ni(II)), and five clathrates with three aromatic guests, ML4(NCS)2·2G (M = Co(II) and Ni(II), G = nitrobenzene (NB); M = Co, G = 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCB); M = Co(II) and Ni(II), G = o-xylene (OX)). 5 was prepared in high yield by condensation in the solid-state (C3S3, Cocrystal Controlled Solid-State Synthesis). The Werner complexes ML4(NCS)2 (M = Co(II) and Ni(II)) (apohosts) were prepared by reacting M(NCS)2 (M = Co(II) and Ni(II)) and 5 in 1-butanol at 60 °C for 24 h. The Werner clathrates were prepared by reacting M(NCS)2 (M = Co(II) and Ni(II)), G and 5 in 1-butanol at 60 °C for 48-96 h. The clathrates were observed to transform to the apohost ML4(NCS)2 upon heating. CoL4(NCS)2·2NB was subsequently regenerated by exposing CoL4(NCS)2 to liquid NB at 60 °C for 48 h. This phase change occurred as a single-crystal to single-crystal phase transformation and was studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction and thermal analyses. Structural analyses of the apohost CoL4(NCS)2 and its Werner clathrate CoL4(NCS)2·2NB indicated that rotational freedom of the Co-N bonds together with torsional flexibility of the ligand between the imide bond and the pyridine moiety are key to enabling the structural switching induced by exposure to NB or its removal.

A Dynamic Chemical Clip in Supramolecular Framework for Sorting Alkylaromatic Isomers using Thermodynamic and Kinetic Preferences

Adsorptive chemical separation is at the forefront of future technologies, for use in chemical and petrochemical industries. In this process, a porous adsorbent selectively allows a single component from a mixture of three or more chemical components to be adsorbed or permeate. To separate the unsorted chemicals, a different adsorbent is needed. A unique adsorbent which can recognize and separate each of the chemicals from a mixture of three or more components is the necessity for the next generation porous materials. In this regard, we demonstrate a "dynamic chemical clip" in a supramolecular framework capable of thermodynamic and kinetics-based chemical separation. The dynamic space, featuring a strong preference for aromatic guests through π-π and C-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions and adaptability, can recognize the individual chemical isomers from mixtures and separate those based on thermodynamic and kinetic factors. The liquid-phase selectivity and separation of the aromatic isomers are possible by the adaptability of the "chemical clip" and here we elucidate the prime factors in a combinatorial approach involving crystallographic evidence and detailed computational studies.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Highly Selective Separation of Xylene Isomers and Single-Crystal X-ray Study of Aromatic Guest-Host Inclusion Compounds

Separation of hydrocarbon molecules, such as benzene/cyclohexane and o-xylene/m-xylene/p-xylene, is relevant due to their widespread application as chemical feedstock but challenging because of their similar boiling points and close molecular sizes. Physisorption separation could offer an energy-efficient solution to this problem, but the design and synthesis of sorbents that exhibit high selectivity for one of the hydrocarbons remain a largely unmet challenge. Herein, we report a new heterometallic MOF with a unique tortuous shape of channels decorated with aromatic sorption sites [Li₂Zn₂(bpy)(ndc)₃] (NIIC-30(Ph), bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, ndc^2- = naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylate) and study of its benzene/cyclohexane and xylene vapor and liquid separation. For an equimolar benzene/cyclohexane mixture, it is possible to achieve a 10-fold excess of benzene in the adsorbed phase. In the case of xylenes, microporous framework NIIC-30(Ph) demonstrates outstanding selective sorption properties and becomes a new benchmark for m-/o-xylene separation. In addition, NIIC-30(Ph) is stable enough to carry out at least three separation cycles of benzene/cyclohexane mixtures or ternary o-xylene/m-xylene/p-xylene mixtures both in the liquid and in the vapor phase. Insights into the performance of NIIC-30(Ph) are gained from X-ray structural studies of each aromatic guest inclusion compound.

1D Zn(II) Coordination Polymers as Effective Heterogeneous Catalysts in Microwave-Assisted Single-Pot Deacetalization-Knoevenagel Tandem Reactions in Solvent-Free Conditions

The new 1D CPs [Zn(L1)(H2O)4]n.nH2O (1) and [Zn(L2)(H2O)2]n (2) [L1 = 1,1′-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis(6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylic acid); L2 = 1,1′-(propane-1,3-diyl)bis(6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylic acid)] were prepared from flexible dicarboxylate pro-ligands (H2L1 and H2L2). Both CPs 1 and 2 were characterized by elemental, FTIR, and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Their geometry and the structural features were unveiled by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The underlying topology of the CPs was illustrated by the topological analysis of the H-bonded structure of CP 1, which revealed a 3,4,6-connected trinodal net. On the other hand, topological analysis on the hydrogen-bonded network of CP 2 showed a 2,3,3,4,6,7-connected hexanodal net. The thermal stability of the CPs was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. CPs 1 and 2 act as heterogeneous catalysts in one-pot tandem deacetalization–Knoevenagel condensation reactions under environmentally mild conditions. CPs 1 exhibits a yield of ca. 91% in a microwave-assisted solvent-free medium, whereas a slightly lower yield was obtained for CP 2 (87%) under the same experimental protocol. The recyclability of catalyst 1 was also assessed. To our knowledge, these are the first Zn(II)-based CPs to be applied as heterogeneous catalysts for the above tandem reactions under environmentally friendly conditions.

From 1D to 2D Cd(II) and Zn(II) Coordination Networks by Replacing Monocarboxylate with Dicarboxylates in Partnership with Azine Ligands: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, Inclusion, and Emission Properties

Eight mixed-ligand coordination networks, [Cd(2-aba)(NO₃)(4-bphz)_3/2]_n·n(dmf) (1), [Cd(2-aba)₂(4-bphz)]_n·0.75n(dmf) (2), [Cd(seb)(4-bphz)]_n·n(H₂O) (3), [Cd(seb)(4-bpmhz)]_n·n(H₂O) (4), [Cd(hpa)(3-bphz)]_n (5), [Zn(1,3-bdc)(3-bpmhz)]_n·n(MeOH) (6), [Cd(1,3-bdc)(3-bpmhz)]_n ·0.5n(H₂O)·0.5n(EtOH) (7), and [Cd(NO₃)₂(3-bphz)(bpe)]_n·n(3-bphz) (8) were obtained by interplay of cadmium nitrate tetrahydrate or zinc nitrate hexahydrate with 2-aminobenzenecarboxylic acid (H(2-aba)), three dicarboxylic acids, sebacic (decanedioic acid, H₂seb), homophthalic (2-(carboxymethyl)benzoic acid, H₂hpa), isophthalic (1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid, H₂(1,3-bdc)) acids, bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe) and with four azine ligands, 1,2-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethylene)hydrazine (4-bphz), 1,2-bis(1-(pyridin-4-yl)ethylidene) hydrazine (4-bpmhz), 1,2-bis(pyridin-3-ylmethylene)hydrazine (3-bphz), and 1,2-bis(1-(pyridin-3-yl) ethylidene)hydrazine (3-bpmhz). Compounds 1 and 2 are 1D coordination polymers, while compounds 3–8 are 2D coordination polymers. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction methods of analysis. The solvent uptakes and stabilities to the guest evacuation were studied and compared for 1D and 2D coordination networks. The de-solvated forms revealed a significant increase of emission in comparison with the as-synthesized crystals.

Tuning the Atrazine Binding Sites in an Indium-Based Flexible Metal-Organic Framework

Constructing flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with targeted properties is of high interest given their demonstrated potential as smart materials that undergo structural transformations in response to external stimuli. Herein, we report a flexible and interpenetrated indium-based MOF, NU-50, comprising four-connected [In(CO₂)₄]^- nodes and tetracarboxylate pyrene-based ligands assembled in the pts topology. The flexible framework of NU-50 exhibits intricate structural transformations upon exposure to external stimuli, namely, guest solvent molecules and elevated temperatures. The high density of pyrene moieties throughout the interpenetrated framework offers numerous sites for the adsorption of highly conjugated guest molecules such as atrazine via π-π interactions. As a result, NU-50 efficiently removes atrazine from water, achieving a maximum atrazine uptake capacity of 74 mg of atrazine per gram of NU-50. Molecular simulations reveal that the dynamic behavior of NU-50 involves the distortion of metal-ligand bonds, resulting in a narrow pore structure that affords effective adsorption of atrazine molecules in a sandwich-like geometry. Moreover, washing in acetone quickly regenerates the sorbent.
