D-π*-A type planar chiral TADF materials for efficient circularly polarized electroluminescence

Tetraborated Intrinsically Axial Chiral Multi-resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials

Chiral multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (CP-MR-TADF) materials hold promise for circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) and 3D displays. Herein, we present two pairs of tetraborated intrinsically axial CP-MR-TADF materials, R/S-BDBF-BOH and R/S-BDBT-BOH, with conjugation-extended bidibenzo[b,d]furan and bidibenzo[b,d]thiophene as chiral sources, which effectively participate in the distribution of the frontier molecular orbitals. Due to the heavy-atom effect, sulfur atoms are introduced to accelerate the reverse intersystem crossing process and increase the efficiency of molecules. R/S-BDBF-BOH and R/S-BDBT-BOH manifest ultra-pure blue emission with a maximum at 458/459 nm with a full width at half maximum of 27 nm, photoluminescence quantum yields of 90 %/91 %, and dissymmetry factors (|gPL|) of 6.8×10-4/8.5×10-4, respectively. Correspondingly, the CP-OLEDs exhibit good performances with an external quantum efficiency of 30.1 % and |gEL| factors of 1.2×10-3.

Synthesis of Mono-, Di-, Tri-, and Tetra-cationic Pyridinium and Vinylpyridinium Modified [2.2]Paracyclophanes: Modular Receptors for Supramolecular Systems

In this report, a new series of mono-, di-, tri-, and tetra-cationic pyridinium and vinyl pyridinium-modified [2.2]paracyclophanes as useful molecular tectons for supramolecular systems are described. Regioselective functionalization at specific positions, followed by resolution step and successive transformations through Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura and Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling chemistry furnish a series of modular PCP scaffolds. In our proof-of-concept study, on N-methylation, the PCPs bearing (cationic) pyridyl functionalities were demonstrated as useful molecular receptors in host-guest supramolecular assays. The PCPs on grafting with light-responsive azobenzene (-N=N-) functional core as side-groups impart photosensitivity that can be remotely transformed on irradiation, offering photo-controlled smart molecular functions. Furthermore, the symmetrical PCPs bearing bi-, and tetra-pyridyl functionalities at the peripheries have enormous potential to serve as ditopic and tetratopic 3D molecular tectons for engineering non-covalent supramolecular assemblies with new structural and functional attributes.

Recent advances in circularly polarized luminescence of planar chiral organic compounds

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), as an important chiroptical phenomenon, can not only directly characterize excited-state structural information about chiroptical materials but also has great application prospects in 3D optical displays, information storage, biological probes, CPL lasers and so forth. Recently, chiral organic small molecules with CPL have attracted a lot of research interest because of their excellent luminescence efficiency, clear molecular structures, unique flexibility and easy functionalization. Planar chiral organic compounds make up an important class of chiral organic small molecular materials and often have rigid macrocyclic skeletons, which have important research value in the field of chiral supramolecular chemistry (e.g., chiral self-assembly and chiral host-guest chemistry). Therefore, research into planar chiral organic compounds has become a hotspot for CPL. It is time to summarize the recent developments in CPL-active compounds based on planar chirality. In this feature article, we summarize various types of CPL-active compounds based on planar chirality. Meanwhile, we overview recent research in the field of planar chiral CPL-active compounds in terms of optoelectronic devices, asymmetric catalysis, and chiroptical sensing. Finally, we discuss their future research prospects in the field of CPL-active materials. We hope that this review will be helpful to research work related to planar chiral luminescent materials and promote the development of chiral macrocyclic chemistry.

Integration of fine-tuned chiral donor with hybrid long/short-range charge-transfer for high-performance circularly polarized electroluminescence

The synergistic integration of a fine-tuned chiral donor with a hybrid long/short-range charge-transfer mechanism offers an accessible pathway to construct highly efficient circularly polarized emitters. Consequently, a notable dissymmetry factor of 1.6 × 10-3, concomitantly with a record-setting maximum external quantum efficiency of 37.4%, is synchronously realized within a single embodiment.

Functionalization of the Octahydro-Binaphthol Skeleton: A Universal Strategy for Directly Constructing D-A Type Axially Chiral Biphenyl Luminescent Molecules

D-A type axially chiral biphenyl luminescent molecules are directly constructed through ingenious functionalization of the octahydro-binaphthol skeleton without optical resolution. The circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes based on them display remarkable circularly polarized electroluminescence emission, a high luminance of >10 000 cd m-2, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.6%, and an extremely low-efficiency roll-off. This work provides a universal strategy for developing efficient and diverse axially chiral biphenyl emitters.

Efficient Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence from Achiral Luminescent Materials

Circularly polarized electroluminescence (CP-EL) is generally produced in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on special CP luminescent (CPL) materials, while common achiral luminescent materials are rarely considered to be capable of direct producing CP-EL. Herein, near ultraviolet CPL materials with high photoluminescence quantum yields and good CPL dissymmetry factors are developed, which can induce blue to red CPL for various achiral luminescent materials. Strong near ultraviolet CP-EL with the best external quantum efficiencies (η_ext s) of 9.0 % and small efficiency roll-offs are achieved by using them as emitters for CP-OLEDs. By adopting them as hosts or sensitizers, commercially available yellow-orange achiral phosphorescence, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and multi-resonance (MR) TADF materials can generate intense CP-EL, with high dissymmetry factors and outstanding η_ext s (30.8 %), demonstrating a simple and universal avenue towards efficient CP-EL.

Planar Chiral Multiple Resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials for Efficient Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence

Chiral boron/nitrogen doped multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters are promising for highly efficient and color-pure circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Herein, we report two pairs of MR-TADF materials (Czp-tBuCzB, Czp-POAB) based on planar chiral paracyclophane with photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 98 %. The enantiomers showed symmetric circularly polarized photoluminescence spectra with dissymmetry factors |g_PL | of up to 1.6×10^-3 in doped films. Meanwhile, the sky-blue CP-OLEDs with (R/S)-Czp-tBuCzB showed an external quantum efficiency of 32.1 % with the narrowest full-width at half-maximum of 24 nm among the reported CP-OLEDs, while the devices with (R/S)-Czp-POAB displayed the first nearly pure green CP electroluminescence with |g_EL | factors at the 10^-3 level. These results demonstrate the incorporation of planar chirality into MR-TADF emitter is a reliable strategy for constructing of efficient CP-OLEDs.

The preparation and properties of circularly polarized luminescent liquid crystal physical gels with self-supporting performance

In recent years, great progress has been made in the preparation methods and performance regulation of host-guest doped CPL liquid crystal materials. However, there still exist some basic problems to be solved, such as complex packaging and unstable CPL properties. With the consideration of the above problems, in this study, we introduced gelators into the host-guest doped CPL liquid crystal materials to prepare CPL liquid crystal physical gels. The gelators can be assembled to form a nanofiber physical gel network, which limits the movement of the liquid crystals and enhances the stability of the CPL properties. Meanwhile, liquid crystal physical gels show self-supporting ability and the gel-sol phase transition temperature can reach 136 °C. The amplification of the g_lum value is achieved by self-assembly of chiral liquid crystals, and the g_lum value can reach -0.31. The phase structure changes with electric field and temperature, and the CPL properties can be regulated by changing the temperature and electric field. With the increasing applied voltage or the temperature, the g_lum value decreases. Therefore, we have successfully prepared a new type of CPL liquid crystal physical gels with self-supporting performance, stimulus response performance and large g_lum values.

Chiral Multi-Resonance TADF Emitters Exhibiting Narrowband Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence with an EQE of 37.2

Highly efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitters with narrowband emission remain a formidable challenge for circularly polarized OLEDs (CP-OLEDs). Here, a promising strategy for developing chiral emitters concurrently featuring multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) and circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) is demonstrated by the integration of molecular rigidity, central chirality and MR effect. A pair of chiral green emitters denoted as (R)-BN-MeIAc and (S)-BN-MeIAc is designed. Benefited by the rigid and quasi-planar MR-framework, the enantiomers not only display mirror-image CPL spectra, but also exhibit TADF properties with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 96 %, a narrow FWHM of 30 nm, and a high horizontal dipole orientation of 90 % in the doped film. Consequently, the enantiomer-based CP-OLEDs achieved excellent external quantum efficiencies of 37.2 % with very low efficiency roll-off, representing the highest device efficiency of all the reported CP-OLEDs.

Advances in circularly polarized electroluminescence based on chiral TADF-active materials

This review summarizes the development status of chiral TADF-active materials with CPEL, covering chiral perturbed TADF molecules, intrinsically chiral TADF molecules, and TADFsensitized fluorescent enantiomers.
