Untangling the mechanics of entanglements in slide-ring gels towards both super-deformability and toughness

Ionic conductive konjac glucomannan/liquid crystal cellulose composite hydrogels with dual sensing of photo- and electro-signals capacities as wearable strain sensors

The ionic conductive hydrogel-based sensor exhibits wide applications in wearable electronic devices. However, the strength and ductility trade-off, multimodal requirements, and water-soluble polymer alternatives are significant challenges for the hydrogel-based sensor. Herein, a stretchable and conductive hydrogel is developed with a double network formed by incorporating polyacrylamide and ionic liquid into the konjac glucomannan network. The hydrogel displays significantly enhanced mechanical properties, and good tear/puncture resistance owing to the existence of covalent and non-covalent interactions. In addition, by the introduction of nematic liquid crystal hydroxypropyl cellulose, the hydrogel/cellulose-based strain sensor demonstrates excellent sensing performance in monitoring human motions and writing recognition ability with optical and electrical bimodal sensing response. This work provides new insights to further expand the options of hydrogel-based sensor matrix and to construct bimodal sensors.

A double-well potential model for glass transition in a glassy hydrogel undergoing bi-stable interactions with water

The key mechanisms for achieving ultra-high mechanical properties of glassy hydrogels have not been fully understood, and it is commonly believed that their glass transitions are the crucial reasons due to the existence of significant bi-stable interactions between polymer macromolecules and water molecules. In this study, a double-well potential model is formulated to describe the mechanical properties of glassy hydrogels undergoing glass transition, by combining phase evolution theory and a rubber elasticity model. Bi-stable interactions between polymer macromolecules and water molecules (for both the trapped and free water) have been characterized using this double-well potential model, and various parameters are studied, including depth of well (for elasticity), distance between two wells (for yielding), and energy difference between two wells (for transition probability). Furthermore, constitutive stress-strain relationships are developed to explore the working principles for achieving ultra-high mechanical properties of these glassy hydrogels. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed models is verified using finite element analysis (FEA) and also the experimental results reported in the literature, thus providing physical and mechanical insights into the ultra-high mechanical properties of glassy hydrogels.

Recent Advances in Design Strategies of Tough Hydrogels

Hydrogels are a fascinating class of materials popular in numerous fields, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, soft robotics, and sensors, attributed to their 3D network porous structure containing a significant amount of water. However, traditional hydrogels exhibit poor mechanical strength, limiting their practical applications. Thus, many researchers have focused on the development of mechanically enhanced hydrogels. This review describes the design considerations for constructing tough hydrogels and some of the latest strategies in recent years. These tough hydrogels have an up-and-coming prospect and bring great hope to the fields of biomedicine and others.
