Adsorptive removal of antibiotic pollutants from wastewater using biomass/biochar-based adsorbents

Removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotic and sulfonated dye by functionalized Persea americana seed powder: Appraisal on phase transfer kinetics, equilibrium, economics, and applications in rural settings

The study focuses on reactive orange 16 (RO16), a sulfonated dye, and ciprofloxacin (CiP), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic treatment from aquatic surface by adsorption. The functionalized Persea americana seed powder (PASP) was developed by acid hydrolysis technique and investigated for RO16 and CiP removal in batch scale at different concentrations for CiP and RO16, pH (2-8), contact duration and temperature (303-318K). Utilizing a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), the generated native PASP were assessed for their morphological characteristics. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was applied to examine the performing characteristics of PASP. Experimental findings with four kinetic mathematical models allowed the estimation of the process involved in the biosorption. The most effective agreement was explained by the pseudo-second-order model and Sips isotherm (Cip = 34.603 mg/g and RO16 = 30.357 mg/g) at 303K temperature. For Cip Process economics of the biosorbent was done, and it was observed that it was less than the readily market-available activated carbon.

Utilization of shea butter waste-derived hierarchical activated carbon for high-performance supercapacitor applications

In this work, carbonization and subsequent activation procedures were adopted to synthesize waste shea butter shells into oxygen-rich interconnected porous activated carbon (SAC_x, x is the mass ratio of KOH used for activation). The SAC_1.5 electrode material showed outstanding electrochemical performance with high specific capacitance (286.6 F/g) and improved rate capability, owing to various synergistic effects originating from a high specific surface area (1233.5 m2/g) and O-rich content. The SAC_1.5-based symmetric device delivered an impressive specific capacitance of 91.6 F/g with a high energy density of 12.7 Wh/kg at 0.5 A/g. The device recorded 99.9 % capacitance retention after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. The symmetric supercapacitor device successfully lit an LED bulb for more than 1 h, signifying the potential of bio-waste as an efficient carbon precursor for electrode material in practical supercapacitors. This work offers an efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly strategy for potential renewable energy storage devices.

Synergistic interactions and reaction mechanisms of biochar surface functionalities in antibiotics removal from industrial wastewater

Biochar, a carbon-rich material with a unique surface chemistry (high abundance of surface functional groups, large surface area, and well-distributed), has shown great potential as a sustainable solution for industrial wastewater treatment as compared to conventional industrial wastewater treatment techniques demand substantial energy consumption and generate detrimental byproducts. This critical review emphasizes the surface functionalities formation and development in biochar to enhance its physiochemical properties, for utilization in antibiotics removal. Factors affecting the formation of functionalities, including carbonization processes, feedstock materials, operating parameters, and the influence of pre-post treatments, are thoroughly highlighted to understand the crucial role of factors influencing biochar properties for optimal antibiotics removal. Furthermore, the research explores the removal mechanisms and interactions of biochar-based surface functionalities, hydrogen bonding, encompassing electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, π-π interactions, and electron donor and acceptor interactions, to provide insights into the adsorption/removal behavior of antibiotics on biochar surfaces. The review also explains the mechanism of factors influencing the removal of antibiotics in industrial wastewater treatment, including particle size and pore structure, nature and types of surface functional groups, pH and surface charge, temperature, surface modification strategies, hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, biochar dose, pollutant concentration, contact time, and the presence of coexisting ions and other substances. Finally, the study offers reusability and regeneration, challenges and future perspectives on the development of biochar-based adsorbents and their applications in addressing antibiotics. It concludes by summarizing the key findings and emphasizing the significance of biochar as a sustainable and effective solution for mitigating antibiotics contamination in industrial wastewater.

Recent progresses in synthesis and modification of g-C3N4 for improving visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a widely studied visible-light-active photocatalyst for low cost, non-toxicity, and facile synthesis. Nonetheless, its photocatalytic efficiency is below par, due to fast recombination of charge carriers, low surface area, and insufficient visible light absorption. Thus, the research on the modification of g-C3N4 targeting at enhanced photocatalytic performance has attracted extensive interest. A considerable amount of review articles have been published on the modification of g-C3N4 for applications. However, limited effort has been specially contributed to providing an overview and comparison on available modification strategies for improved photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4-based catalysts in antibiotics removal. There has been no attempt on the comparison of photocatalytic performances in antibiotics removal between modified g-C3N4 and other known catalysts. To address these, our study reviewed strategies that have been reported to modify g-C3N4, including metal/non-metal doping, defect tuning, structural engineering, heterostructure formation, etc. as well as compared their performances for antibiotics removal. The heterostructure formation was the most widely studied and promising route to modify g-C3N4 with superior activity. As compared to other known photocatalysts, the heterojunction g-C3N4 showed competitive performances in degradation of selected antibiotics. Related mechanisms were discussed, and finally, we revealed current challenges in practical application.

Properties and Possibilities of Using Biochar Composites Made on the Basis of Biomass and Waste Residues Ferryferrohydrosol Sorbent

Biochar enriched with metals has an increased potential for sorption of organic and inorganic pollutants. The aim of the research was to identify the possibility of using biochar composites produced on the basis of waste plant biomass and waste FFH (ferryferrohydrosol) containing iron atoms, after CO2 capture. The composites were produced in a one-stage or two-stage pyrolysis process. Their selected properties were determined as follows: pH, ash content, C, H, N, O, specific surface area, microstructure and the presence of surface functional groups. The produced biochar and composites had different properties resulting from the production method and the additive used. The results of experiments on the removal of methylene blue (MB) from solutions allowed us to rank the adsorbents used according to the maximum dye removal value achieved as follows: BC1 (94.99%), B (84.61%), BC2 (84.09%), BC3 (83.23%) and BC4 (83.23%). In terms of maximum amoxicillin removal efficiency, the ranking is as follows: BC1 (55.49%), BC3 (23.51%), BC2 (18.13%), B (13.50%) and BC4 (5.98%). The maximum efficiency of diclofenac removal was demonstrated by adsorbents BC1 (98.71), BC3 (87.08%), BC4 (74.20%), B (36.70%) and BC2 (30.40%). The most effective removal of metals Zn, Pb and Cd from the solution was demonstrated by BC1 and BC3 composites. The final concentration of the tested metals after sorption using these composites was less than 1% of the initial concentration. The highest increase in biomass on prepared substrates was recorded for the BC5 composite. It was higher by 90% and 54% (for doses of 30 g and 15 g, respectively) in relation to the biomass growth in the soil without additives. The BC1 composite can be used in pollutant sorption processes. However, BC5 has great potential as a soil additive in crop yield and plant growth.

Thermally modified nanocrystalline snail shell adsorbent for methylene blue sequestration: equilibrium, kinetic, thermodynamic, artificial intelligence, and DFT studies

In recent years, the quest for an efficient and sustainable adsorbent material that can effectively remove harmful and hazardous dyes from industrial effluent has become more intense. The goal is to explore the capability of thermally modified nanocrystalline snail shells (TMNSS) as a new biosorbent for removing methylene blue (MB) dye from contaminated wastewater. TMNSS was employed in batch adsorption experiments to remove MB dye from its solutions, taking into account various adsorption parameters such as contact time, temperature, pH, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration. SEM, EDS, XRD, and FTIR were used to characterize the adsorbent. The study further developed and adopted adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and density functional theory (DFT) studies to holistically examine the adsorption process of MB onto the adsorbent. EDX and FTIR confirm the formation of CaO with a sharp peak at 547 cm-1, and C-O and O-H are present, as well. SEM and XRD show an irregularly shaped highly crystalline nanosized (65 ± 2.81 nm) particle with a lattice parameter value of 8.611617 Å. The adsorption efficiency of 96.48 ± 0.58% was recorded with a pH of 3.0 and an adsorbent dose of 10 mg at 30 °C. The findings from the study fit nicely onto Freundlich isotherms, with Qm = 31.7853 mg g-1 and R2 = 0.9985. Pseudo-second-order kinetics recorded the least error value of 0.8792 and R2 = 0.9868, thus indicating chemisorption and multilayer adsorption processes. The exothermic and spontaneous nature of the adsorption process are demonstrated by ΔH° and ΔG°. The performance of the ANFIS-based prediction of removal rate, which was demonstrated by a root mean square error (RMSE) value of 2.2077, mean absolute deviation (MAD) value of 1.1429, mean absolute error (MAE) value of 1.8786, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) value of 2.0178, revealed that the ANFIS model predictions and experimental findings are in good agreement. More so, DFT provides insights into the molecular interactions between MB and the adsorbent surface, with a calculated adsorbate-adsorbent binding affinity value of -1.3 kcal mol-1, thus confirming the ability of TMNSS for MB sequestration. The findings of this study highlight the promising potential of thermally modified nanocrystalline snail shells as sustainable and efficient adsorbents for MB sequestration.

Human health risk assessment associated with the reuse of treated wastewater in arid areas

Qatar produces more than 850,000 m3/day of highly treated wastewater. The present study aims at characterizing the effluents coming out of three central wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) of chemical pollutants including metals, metalloids and antibiotics commonly used in the country. Additionally, the study is assessing human health risks associated with the exposure to the treated wastewater (TWW) via dermal and ingestion routes. Although the origin of domestic wastewater is desalinated water (the only source of fresh water), the results show that the targeted parameters in TWW were within the international standards. Concentrations of Cl, F, Br, NO3, NO2, SO4 and PO4, were 389, <0.1, 1.2, 25, <0.1, 346, and 2.8 mg/L, respectively. On the other hand, among all cations, metals and metalloids, only boron (B) was 2.1 mg/L which is higher than the Qatari guidelines for TWW reuse in irrigation of 1.5 mg/L. Additionally, strontium (Sr) and thallium (Tl) were detected with relatively high concentrations of 30 mg/L and 12.5 μg/L, respectively, due to their natural and anthropogenic sources. The study found that the low concentrations of all tested metals and metalloids do not pose any risk to human health. However, Tl presents exposure levels above the 10 % of oral reference dose (HQ = 0.4) for accidental oral ingestion of TWW. The results for antibiotics show that exposure for adults and children to TWW are far below the admissible daily intakes set using minimum therapeutic dose and considering uncertainty factors. Treated wastewater of Qatar can be used safely for irrigation. However, further investigations are still needed to assess microbiological quality.

Tetracycline removal from soil by phosphate-modified biochar: Performance and bacterial community evolution

Since the remediation performance of soil tetracycline pollution by original biochar is not ideal, many modified methods have been proposed to improve its performance. Considering the cost, complex modification process and environmental friendliness, many modified biochar are difficult to be used in soil environments. In this work, biochar derived from corn stover was modified using phosphate to increase the adsorption ability of soil tetracycline and alleviate the negative effects caused by tetracycline. The results showed that pyrolysis temperatures and anion types of phosphate (PO43-, HPO42-, H2PO4-) played important roles in the performance of modified biochar. Compared with original biochar, phosphate modified biochar not only improved the adsorption capacity, but also changed the adsorption behavior of tetracycline. Via SEM, BET and FTIR techniques, the intrinsic reasons for the increase of adsorption capacity were explained by the change of morphological structures as well as functional groups of the modified biochar. K3PO4 and high temperature (800 °C) maximally improved the surface morphology, increased the pore structure, changed the surface functional groups of biochar, and then increased the adsorption capacity of tetracycline (124.51 mg/g). Subsequently, the optimal material (K3PO4-800) was selected and applied for tetracycline contaminated soil remediation. Compared to the soil without remediation, K3PO4-800 modified biochar effectively reduced the effective concentration of tetracycline in soil, and improved soil K and P nutrition, and reshaped microbial communities. Our study showed that K3PO4-800 modified biochar was not only a good tetracycline resistant material, but also a good soil amendment.

Techno-economic assessment of waste mandarin biochar as a green adsorbent for binary dye wastewater effluents of methylene blue and basic fuchsin: Lab- and large-scale investigations

Treating polluted wastewater effluents on a large-scale requires the development of high performance and cost-effective adsorbents. The recycling of waste mandarin peels, an environmentally friendly, and copiously available waste biomass into biochar (MRBC), has been approached. In the context of finding affordable and effective solutions for depollution of wastewater, MRBC was used for the adsorption of two dyes: methylene blue (MB) as well as basic fuchsin (BF) from their individual solutions and binary combinations. Batch adsorption studies were performed by employing the Box-Behnken (BB) design. The adsorption competency of dyes was analyzed to find the percentage removal (%R) and the adsorption capacity (qe, mg/g). The dependent parameters (qe and %R) were determined as a function of pH, dose of MRBC (AD), contact time (CT), and concentration of methylene blue [MB]/ basic fuchsin [BF]. Removal of 98.14% of MB and 83.18% of BF was successfully achieved. Equilibrium experiments depicted that Langmuir and Freundlich models suit adsorption of dyes. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) was 99.11 (MB) and 78.01 mg/g (BF), individually. However, when the dyes are combined, the qmax decreased to 57.09 and 68.52 mg/g for MB and BF, correspondingly. The cost of MRBC was estimated to be ∼ 4 USD/kg, while the overall cost of wastewater treatment was estimated to be 1.06 USD/m3/year.

Adsorption and photodegradation of organic contaminants by silver nanoparticles: isotherms, kinetics, and computational analysis

In view of the widespread and distribution of several classes and types of organic contaminants, increased efforts are needed to reduce their spread and subsequent environmental contamination. Although several remediation approaches are available, adsorption and photodegradation technologies are presented in this review as one of the best options because of their environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, accessibility, less selectivity, and wider scope of applications among others. The bandgap, particle size, surface area, electrical properties, thermal stability, reusability, chemical stability, and other properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPS) are highlighted to account for their suitability in adsorption and photocatalytic applications, concerning organic contaminants. Literatures have been reviewed on the application of various AgNPS as adsorbent and photocatalyst in the remediation of several classes of organic contaminants. Theories of adsorption have also been outlined while photocatalysis is seen to have adsorption as the initial mechanism. Challenges facing the application of silver nanoparticles have also been highlighted and possible solutions have been presented. However, current information is dominated by applications on dyes and the view of the authors supports the need to strengthen the usefulness of AgNPS in adsorption and photodegradation of more classes of organic contaminants, especially emerging contaminants. We also encourage the simultaneous applications of adsorption and photodegradation to completely convert toxic wastes to harmless forms.

Straw-derived biochar for the removal of antibiotics from water: Adsorption and degradation mechanisms, recent advancements and challenges

Antibiotics, a kind of containments with the properties of widely distributed and difficult to degrade, has aroused extensive attention in the world. As a prevalent agricultural waste, straws can be utilized to prepare biochar (straw-derived biochar, SBC) to remove antibiotics from aquatic environment. To date, although a number of review papers have summarized and discussed research on biochar application in wastewater treatment and soil remediation, there are few reviews on SBC for antibiotic removal. Due to the limitations of poor adsorption and degradation performance of the pristine SBC, it is necessary to modify SBC to improve its applications for antibiotics removal. The maximum antibiotic removal capacity of modified SBC could reach 1346.55 mg/g. Moreover, the adsorption mechanisms between modified SBC and antibiotics mainly involve π-π interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and charge dipole interactions. In addition, the modified SBC could completely degrade antibiotics within 6 min by activating oxidants, such as PS, PDS, H2O2, and O3. The mechanisms of antibiotic degradation by SBC activated oxidants mainly include free radicals (including SO4•-, •OH, and O2•-) and non-free radical pathway (such as, 1O2, electrons transfer, and surface-confined reaction). Although SBC and modified SBC have demonstrated excellent performance in removing antibiotics, they still face some challenges in practical applications, such as poor stability, high cost, and difficulties in recycling. Therefore, the further research directions and trends for the development of SBC and biochar-based materials should be taken into consideration.
