Structure formation of PNIPAM microgels in foams and foam films

Relationship between π-A isotherms and single microgel/microgel array structures revealed via the direct visualization of microgels at the air/water interface

The structures of single microgels and microgel arrays formed at the air/water interface were visualized directly, and their structures correlated with π-A isotherms in order to understand the compression behavior of soft and deformable microgels at this interface. Large microgels (ca. 4 μm) were synthesized so that these can be clearly visualized at the air/water interface, even under high compression, and a series of microgel compression experiments were directly evaluated using a Langmuir trough equipped with a fluorescence microscope. The experiments revealed that upon compressing the microgel arrays at the interface voids disappeared and colloidal crystallinity increased. However, the colloidal crystallinity decreased when the microgel arrays were strongly compressed. In addition, when the structures were observed at higher magnification, it became clear that the single microgel structures, when visualized from above, changed from circular to polygonal upon compressing the microgel array. The results of this study can be expected to improve the understanding of the compression behavior of microgel arrays adsorbed at the air/water interface and will thus be useful for the creation of new functional microgel stabilizers with potential applications in e.g., bubbles and emulsions.

Study on the Inhibition Characteristics of Coal Spontaneous Combustion by Silica Gel Foam

The spontaneous combustion of residual coal in abandoned mining areas severely affects the safe and efficient extraction of coal, employee occupational health, and regional environmental ecology. A technical measure for preventing and controlling the spontaneous combustion of residual coal involves injecting antispontaneous combustion materials into abandoned areas. In this study, the composition, preparation, and mechanism of action of silica gel foam, a material used to suppress spontaneous combustion during coal mining, were investigated to improve the performance of materials designed to prevent spontaneous combustion in abandoned areas. The inhibitory efficiency improved, and the mechanical strength and stability of the foam liquid film increased upon adding modified antioxidants and nanosilica particles to the gel foam. Macro performance tests, microstructural characterization, and chemical inhibition mechanism analyses verified the efficacy of silica gel foam for suppressing spontaneous combustion. The air leakage resistance of the silica gel foam effectively increased the air leakage resistance of the coal samples at different pressures. New radicals formed during the spontaneous combustion of coal comprising different inhibitors, as indicated by the g-factor results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy analysis; the formation of radicals initially decreased and then increased when the inhibitor material changed. The concentration of free radicals decreased markedly during the spontaneous combustion process of both raw and inhibited coal samples at low oxidation temperatures (∼60-100 °C), indicating a marked inhibitory effect.

Ultrasound-Induced Adsorption of Acousto-Responsive Microgels at Water-Oil Interface

Ultrasonic mixing is a well-established method to disperse and mix substances. However, the effects of ultrasound on dispersed soft particles as well as on their adsorption kinetics at interfaces remain unexplored. Ultrasound not only accelerates the movement of particles via acoustic streaming, but recent research indicates that it can also manipulate the interaction of soft particles with the surrounding liquid. In this study, it evaluates the adsorption kinetics of microgel at the water-oil interface under the influence of ultrasound. It quantifies how acoustic streaming accelerates the reduction of interfacial tension. It uses high-frequency and low-amplitude ultrasound, which has no destructive effects. Furthermore, it discusses the ultrasound-induced shrinking and thus interfacial rearrangement of the microgels, which plays a secondary but non-negligible role on interfacial tension reduction. It shows that the decrease in interfacial tension due to the acoustic streaming is stronger for microgels with higher cross-linker density. Moreover, it shows that ultrasound can induce a reversible decrease in interfacial tension due to the shrinkage of microgels at the interface. The presented results may lead to a better understanding in any field where ultrasonic waves meet soft particles, e.g., controlled destabilization in foams and emulsions or systems for drug release.

Influence of Dopamine Methacrylamide on Swelling Behavior and Nanomechanical Properties of PNIPAM Microgels

The combination of the catechol-containing comonomer dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) with stimuli-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels bears a huge potential in research and for applications due to the versatile properties of catechols. This research gives the first detailed insights into the influence of DMA on the swelling of PNIPAM microgels and their nanomechanical properties. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed that DMA decreases the volume phase transition temperature and completion temperature due to its higher hydrophobicity when compared to NIPAM, while sharpening the transition. The cross-linking ability of DMA decreases the swelling ratios and mesh sizes of the microgels. Microgels adsorbed at the solid surface are characterized by atomic force microscopy─as the DMA content increases, microgels protrude more from the surface. Force spectroscopy measurements below and above the volume phase transition temperature display a stiffening of the microgels with the incorporation of DMA and upon heating across its entire cross section as evidenced by an increase in the E modulus. This confirms the cross-linking ability of DMA. The affine network factor β, derived from the Flory-Rehner theory, is linearly correlated with the E moduli of both pure PNIPAM and P(NIPAM-co-DMA) microgels. However, large DMA amounts hinder the microgel shrinking while maintaining mechanical stiffness, possibly due to catechol interactions within the microgel network.

Influence of Architecture on the Interfacial Properties of Polymers: Linear Chains, Stars, and Microgels

Surface-active polymers have important applications as effective and responsive emulsifiers, foaming agents, and coatings. In this contribution, we explore the impact of the polymer architecture on the behavior at oil-water interfaces by comparing different poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM)-based systems, namely, monolayers of linear and star-shaped macromolecules, ultralow cross-linked, regular cross-linked, and hollow microgels. Compression isotherms were determined experimentally as well as by computer simulations. The latter provides information about the conformational changes of the individual macromolecules as well as the interfacial properties of the monolayer, including the surface structure and the density distribution of an ensemble of interacting macromolecules near an interface. Surprisingly, the isotherms of the linear polymer, of the star polymer, and of the ultralow cross-linked microgel have an identical shape that differs from the isotherms of regular and hollow microgels. We introduced the mass fraction of adsorbed polymer, which gives a measure of the polymer segments contributing to the isotherm in relation to the most flexible architecture, i.e., the linear polymer, and allows a comparison of polymers with different architectures. The data demonstrate that increasing the number of cross-links leads to a significantly lower amount of polymer in the proximity of the interface as the increase in cross-linker reduces the deformability or softness of the polymers at the interface. The volume fraction profiles along the normal to the interface are essentially different in the microgel monolayers as compared to those in the linear and star polymer. The profiles through the microgel contact line and their growth upon initial compression are similar to those of the linear chains. Herewith, the profiles through the center of mass practically do not change upon compression. Therefore, the initial growth in the microgel surface pressure reveals the polymer-like behavior and is related to the deformation of the peripheral part of the microgel. Further compression of the microgel monolayer leads to 3D interactions of the microgels within the aqueous side of the interface and soft colloid-like behavior.

Stability and Structural Analysis Using Small-Angle Neutron Scattering for Foam of Homogeneous Polyoxyethylene-Type Nonionic Surfactants with Multibranched Chains

Small-angle neutron scattering can provide insight into the microstructure of the surfactant-stabilized foam. In this study, small-angle neutron scattering in combination with other techniques was employed to determine the microstructure of the foams stabilized using novel homogeneous polyoxyethylene (EO) alkyl ether-type nonionic surfactants with multibranched double chains (bC7-bC9EO12). Similarly, homogeneous EO-type nonionic surfactants with linear double chains (C8-C8EO12) and a linear single chain (C18EO12) were used. bC7-bC9EO12 and C8-C8EO12 surfactants with branched hydrophobic chains or double chains increased the foam stability and suppressed the draining. Furthermore, they formed rod-like micelles, and C18EO12 formed spherical micelles in the bulk solution. The foam film containing the plateau border contained micelles identical with those found in the bulk solution. For bC7-bC9EO12 and C8-C8EO12, the average radius of the bubbles immediately after foaming was of the order of hundreds of μm. Finally, these radii grew to the order of thousands of μm. Thus, a significant correlation was observed between the micellar structure and the stability of these foams.

Interactions between interfaces dictate stimuli-responsive emulsion behaviour

Stimuli-responsive emulsions offer a dual advantage, combining long-term storage with controlled release triggered by external cues such as pH or temperature changes. This study establishes that thermo-responsive emulsion behaviour is primarily determined by interactions between, rather than within, interfaces. Consequently, the stability of these emulsions is intricately tied to the nature of the stabilizing microgel particles - whether they are more polymeric or colloidal, and the morphology they assume at the liquid interface. The colloidal properties of the microgels provide the foundation for the long-term stability of Pickering emulsions. However, limited deformability can lead to non-responsive emulsions. Conversely, the polymeric properties of the microgels enable them to spread and flatten at the liquid interface, enabling stimuli-responsive behaviour. Furthermore, microgels shared between two emulsion droplets in flocculated emulsions facilitate stimuli-responsiveness, regardless of their internal architecture. This underscores the pivotal role of microgel morphology and the forces they exert on liquid interfaces in the control and design of stimuli-responsive emulsions and interfaces.
