pH stimulus-responsive hybrid nanoparticles: A system designed for follicular delivery of brazilian plant-derived 5-alpha-reductase enzyme inhibitors

The 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, present in pilosebaceous units, plays a crucial role in the appearance of cutaneous hyperandrogenism manifestations (hirsutism, acne, and androgenetic alopecia). Its inhibition is an excellent strategy to reverse these conditions. Given the limitations of existing treatments, with transient effects and delayed therapeutic response, as well as the possibility of causing undesirable side effects, this study sought to develop new drug delivery systems to overcome these limitations. In other words, innovative stimuli-responsive hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized using silica/natural polysaccharides, encapsulating 5-alpha-reductase enzyme inhibitors derived from the plant Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville (commonly known as 'Barbatimão'). Silica core was synthesized by the modified Stöber method. The pH responsive polysaccharides used to coat the porous silica cores were chitosan, and sodium alginate, this coating was carried out using the Layer-by-Layer technique. The hybrid nanoparticles were characterized at molecular and physical-chemical levels. Furthermore, encapsulation efficiency, pH-dependent release behavior, and cytotoxicity were evaluated. Amorphous mesoporous structure with adequate size for follicular delivery (between 300 and 600 nm) in addition to effective phytocompound loading capacity, above 80 % was obtained. Based on the release studies, it was possible to observe pH responsiveness. The ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) obtained from "Barbatimão" bark extract was released in a controlled and more efficient manner by the alginate-coated nanoparticle (SNP_EAF_SA) at pH 7.4, which corresponds to the pH at the deepest area of hair follicles. Furthermore, SNP_EAF_SA proved to be less cytotoxic compared to EAF and chitosan-coated hybrid nanoparticles (SNP_EAF_CH). Characterization, release, and cytotoxicity results indicate that SNP_EAF_SA is a promising system for on-demand follicular delivery of antiandrogenic actives contained in EAF.

Hybrid Materials: A Metareview

The field of hybrid materials has grown so wildly in the last 30 years that writing a comprehensive review has turned into an impossible mission. Yet, the need for a general view of the field remains, and it would be certainly useful to draw a scientific and technological map connecting the dots of the very different subfields of hybrid materials, a map which could relate the essential common characteristics of these fascinating materials while providing an overview of the very different combinations, synthetic approaches, and final applications formulated in this field, which has become a whole world. That is why we decided to write this metareview, that is, a review of reviews that could provide an eagle's eye view of a complex and varied landscape of materials which nevertheless share a common driving force: the power of hybridization.

Hybrid Membranes of the Ureasil-Polyether Containing Glucose for Future Application in Bone Regeneration

The application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in bone tissue regeneration can have unpredictable results due to the low survival of cells in the process since the lack of oxygen and nutrients promotes metabolic stress. Therefore, in this work, polymeric membranes formed by organic-inorganic hybrid materials called ureasil-polyether for modified glucose release were developed in order to overcome the problems posed by a of lack of this nutrient. Thus, membranes formed by polymeric blend of polypropylene oxide (PPO4000) and polyethylene oxide (PEO500) with 6% glucose incorporation were developed. Physical-chemical characterization techniques were performed, as well as tests that evaluated thermal properties, bioactivity, swelling, and release in SBF solution. The results of the swelling test showed an increase in membrane mass correlated with an increase in the concentration of ureasil-PEO500 in the polymeric blends. The membranes showed adequate resistance when subjected to the application of a high compression force (15 N). X-ray diffraction (XRD) evidenced peaks corresponding to orthorhombic crystalline organization, but the absence of glucose-related peaks showed characteristics of the amorphous regions of hybrid materials, likely due to solubilization. Thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses showed that the thermal events attributed to glucose and hybrid materials were similar to that seen in the literature, however when glucose was incorporated into the PEO500, an increase in rigidity occurs. In PPO400, and in the blends of both materials, there was a slight decrease in Tg values. The smaller contact angle for the ureasil-PEO500 membrane revealed the more hydrophilic character of the material compared to other membranes. The membranes showed bioactivity and hemocompatibility in vitro. The in vitro release test revealed that it is possible to control the release rate of glucose and the kinetic analysis revealed a release mechanism characteristic of anomalous transport kinetics. Thus, we can conclude that ureasil-polyether membranes have great potential to be used as a glucose release system, and their future application has the potential to optimize the bone regeneration process.

Efficient Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization, and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Novel Salicylaldehyde-Based Thiosemicarbazones: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Currently, we reported the synthesis of six novel salicylaldehyde-based thiosemicarbazones (BHCT1-HBCT6) via condensation of salicylaldehyde with respective thiosemicarbazide. Through various spectroscopic methods, UV-visible and NMR, the chemical structures of BHCT1-HBCT6 compounds were determined. Along with synthesis, a computational study was also performed at the M06/6-31G(d,p) functional. Various analyses such as natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, natural population analysis, frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis, and molecular electrostatic potential surfaces were carried out to understand the nonlinear optical (NLO) characteristics of the synthesized compounds. Additionally, a comparative study was carried out between DFT and experimental results (UV-vis study), and a good agreement was observed in the results. The energy gap calculated through FMOs was found to be in decreasing order as 4.505 (FHCT2) > 4.499 (HBCT6) > 4.497 (BHCT1) = 4.497(HMCT5) > 4.386 (CHCT3) > 4.241(AHCT4) in eV. The global reactivity parameters (GRPs) were attained through E _HOMO and E _LUMO, which described the stability and hardness of novel compounds. The NBO approach confirmed the charge delocalization and stability of the molecules. Among all the investigated compounds, a larger value (557.085 a.u.) of first hyperpolarizability (β_tot) was possessed by CHCT3. The NLO response (β_tot) of BHCT1-HBCT6 was found to be 9.145, 9.33, 13.33, 5.43, 5.68, and 10.13 a.u. times larger than that of the standard para-nitroaniline molecule. These findings ascertained the potential of entitled ligands as best NLO materials for a variety of applications in modern technology.

A Non-Hydrolytic Sol–Gel Route to Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Polymers: Linearly Expanded Silica and Silsesquioxanes

Condensation reactions of chlorosilanes (SiCl4 and CH3SiCl3) and bis(trimethylsilyl)ethers of rigid, quasi-linear diols (CH3)3SiO–AR–OSi(CH3)3 (AR = 4,4′-biphenylene (1) and 2,6-naphthylene (2)), with release of (CH3)3SiCl as a volatile byproduct, afforded novel hybrid materials that feature Si–O–C bridges. The precursors 1 and 2 were characterized using FTIR and multinuclear (1H, 13C, 29Si) NMR spectroscopy as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis in case of 2. Pyridine-catalyzed and non-catalyzed transformations were performed in THF at room temperature and at 60 °C. In most cases, soluble oligomers were obtained. The progress of these transsilylations was monitored in solution with 29Si NMR spectroscopy. Pyridine-catalyzed reactions with CH3SiCl3 proceeded until complete substitution of all chlorine atoms; however, no gelation or precipitation was found. In case of pyridine-catalyzed reactions of 1 and 2 with SiCl4, a Sol–Gel transition was observed. Ageing and syneresis yielded xerogels 1A and 2A, which exhibited large linear shrinkage of 57–59% and consequently low BET surface area of 10 m2⋅g−1. The xerogels were analyzed using powder-XRD, solid state 29Si NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, SEM/EDX, elemental analysis, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The SiCl4-derived amorphous xerogels consist of hydrolytically sensitive three-dimensional networks of SiO4-units linked by the arylene groups. The non-hydrolytic approach to hybrid materials may be applied to other silylated precursors, if the reactivity of the corresponding chlorine compound is sufficient.

A Brief Overview of the Microstructural Engineering of Inorganic-Organic Composite Membranes Derived from Organic Chelating Ligands

This review presents a concise conceptual overview of membranes derived from organic chelating ligands as studied in several works. The authors' approach is from the viewpoint of the classification of membranes by matrix composition. The first part presents composite matrix membranes as a key class of membranes and makes a case for the importance of organic chelating ligands in the formation of inorganic-organic composites. Organic chelating ligands, categorized into network-modifying and network-forming types, are explored in detail in the second part. Four key structural elements, of which organic chelating ligands (as organic modifiers) are one and which also include siloxane networks, transition-metal oxide networks and the polymerization/crosslinking of organic modifiers, form the building blocks of organic chelating ligand-derived inorganic-organic composites. Three and four parts explore microstructural engineering in membranes derived from network-modifying and network-forming ligands, respectively. The final part reviews robust carbon-ceramic composite membranes as important derivatives of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers for selective gas separation under hydrothermal conditions when the proper organic chelating ligand and crosslinking conditions are chosen. This review can serve as inspiration for taking advantage of the wide range of possibilities presented by organic chelating ligands.

Solution-Processed Large-Area Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Antireflective Films for Perovskite Solar Cell

In recent years, organic/inorganic hybrid materials have attracted much attention in the field of multilayer antireflection films because of their excellent optical properties. In this paper, the organic/inorganic nanocomposite was prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP). The hybrid material has a wide, tunable window of refractive index, i.e., 1.65-1.95, at a wavelength of 550 nm. The atomic force microscope (AFM) results of the hybrid films show the lowest root-mean-square surface roughness of 2.7 Å and a low haze of 0.23%, indicating that the films have good potential for optical applications. The double-sided antireflection films (10 × 10 cm²) with one side of hybrid nanocomposite/cellulose acetate and the other side of hybrid nanocomposite /polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) achieved high transmittances of 98% and 99.3%, respectively. After 240 days of aging testing, the hybrid solution and the antireflective film remained stable with almost no attenuation. Furthermore, the application of the antireflection films in perovskite solar cell modules increased the power conversion efficiency from 16.57% to 17.25%.

Effect of different end-capped donor moieties on non-fullerenes based non-covalently fused-ring derivatives for achieving high-performance NLO properties

A series of derivatives (DOCD2-DOCD6) with D-π-A configuration was designed by substituting various efficient donor moieties via the structural tailoring of o-DOC6-2F. Quantum-chemical approaches were used to analyze the optoelectronic properties of the designed chromophores. Particularly, M06/6-311G(d,p) functional was employed to investigate the non-linear optical (NLO) response (linear polarizability ⟨α⟩, first (β_tot) and second ([Formula: see text]_tot) order hyperpolarizabilities) of the designed derivatives. A variety of analyses such as frontier molecular orbital (FMO), absorption spectra, transition density matrix (TDMs), density of states (DOS), natural bond orbital (NBO) and global reactivity parameters (GRPs) were employed to explore the optoelectronic response of aforementioned chromophores. FMO investigation revealed that DOCD2 showed the least energy gap (1.657 eV) among all the compounds with an excellent transference of charge towards the acceptor from the donor. Further, DOS pictographs and TDMs heat maps also supported FMO results, corroborating the presence of charge separation states along with efficient charge transitions. NBO analysis showed that π-linker and donors possessed positive charges while acceptors retained negative charges confirming the D-π-A architecture of the studied compounds. The λ_max values of designed chromophores (659.070-717.875 nm) were found to have broader spectra. The GRPs were also examined utilizing energy band gaps of E_HOMO and E_LUMO for the entitled compounds. Among all the derivatives, DOCD2 showed the highest values of β_tot (7.184 × 10^-27 esu) and [Formula: see text]_tot (1.676 × 10^-31 esu), in coherence with the reduced band gap (1.657 eV), indicating future potentiality for NLO materials.

Biocompatible Silica-Polyethylene Glycol-Based Composites for Immobilization of Microbial Cells by Sol-Gel Synthesis

Biocatalysts based on the methylotrophic yeast Ogataea polymorpha VKM Y-2559 immobilized in polymer-based nanocomposites for the treatment of methanol-containing wastewater were developed. The organosilica composites with different matrix-to-filler ratios derived from TEOS/MTES in the presence of PEG (SP_EG-composite) and from silicon-polyethylene glycol (STP_EG-composite) differ in the structure of the silicate phase and its distribution in the composite matrix. Methods of fluorescent and scanning microscopy first confirmed the formation of an organosilica shell around living yeast cells during sol-gel bio-STP_EG-composite synthesis. Biosensors based on the yeast cells immobilized in STP_EG- and SP_EG-composites are characterized by effective operation: the coefficient of sensitivity is 0.85 ± 0.07 mgO₂ × min^-1 × mmol^-1 and 0.87 ± 0.05 mgO₂ × min^-1 × mmol^-1, and the long-term stability is 10 and 15 days, respectively. The encapsulated microbial cells are protected from UV radiation and the toxic action of heavy metal ions. Biofilters based on the developed biocatalysts are characterized by high effectiveness in the utilization of methanol-rich wastewater-their oxidative power reached 900 gO₂/(m³ × cycle), and their purification degree was up to 60%.

Role of titanium and organic precursors in molecular layer deposition of "titanicone" hybrid materials

The development of hybrid inorganic-organic films with well-controlled properties is important for many applications. Molecular layer deposition (MLD) allows the deposition of these hybrid films using sequential, self-limiting reactions, similar to atomic layer deposition (ALD). In this paper, we use first principles density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the growth mechanism of titanium-containing hybrid organic-inorganic MLD films, known as "titanicones". We investigate in detail the chemistry between the most common Ti precursors, namely titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄) and tetrakis(dimethylamido)titanium (Ti(DMA)₄), and ethylene glycol (EG) and glycerol (GL) as the organic precursors. We analyse the impact of the substrate on the initial MLD reactions in titanicone film growth using three different surface models: anatase TiO₂, rutile TiO₂ and Al₂O₃. Calculated energetics show that while TiCl₄ is reactive towards the anatase and rutile TiO₂ surfaces, it is not reactive towards the Al₂O₃ surface. Ti(DMA)₄ is reactive towards all surfaces. This is attributed to the stronger Ti-Cl bonds in TiCl₄ compared to Ti-N bonds in Ti(DMA)₄. Ti(DMA)₄ also shows high reactivity to the organics compared to TiCl₄. Double reactions of EG and GL with the TiCl₃ species from TiCl₄ and TiDMA species from Ti(DMA)₄ are also explored to better understand the origin of the different thicknesses of EG-titanicone and GL-titanicone films observed in experimental work. We find that EG and GL coupled with TiCl₄ can orient in a flat lying configuration on anatase while on rutile, the preferred orientation is upright. When combined with Ti(DMA)₄, EG and GL prefer the flat lying configuration on all surfaces. This work shows that the choice of the surface and the metallic precursor has a major impact on the behaviour of organic species. DFT findings provide motivation to develop a low temperature rutile TiO₂/titanicone film suggesting that the desired film growth could be achieved.

Novel Silica Hybrid Xerogels Prepared by Co-Condensation of TEOS and ClPhTEOS: A Chemical and Morphological Study

The search for new materials with improved properties for advanced applications is, nowadays, one of the most relevant and booming fields for scientists due to the environmental and technological needs of our society. Within this demand, hybrid siliceous materials, made out of organic and inorganic species (ORMOSILs), have emerged as an alternative with endless chemical and textural possibilities by incorporating in their structure the properties of inorganic compounds (i.e., mechanical, thermal, and structural stability) in synergy with those of organic compounds (functionality and flexibility), and thus, bestowing the material with unique properties, which allow access to multiple applications. In this work, synthesis using the sol-gel method of a series of new hybrid materials prepared by the co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 4-chlorophenyltriethoxysilane (ClPhTEOS) in different molar ratios is described. The aim of the study is not only the preparation of new materials but also their characterization by means of different techniques (FT-IR, ²⁹Si NMR, X-ray Diffraction, and N₂/CO₂ adsorption, among others) to obtain information on their chemical behavior and porous structure. Understanding how the chemical and textural properties of these materials are modulated with respect to the molar percentage of organic precursor will help to envisage their possible applications: From the most conventional such as catalysis, adsorption, or separation, to the most advanced in nanotechnology such as microelectronics, photoluminescence, non-linear optics, or sensorics.

Skillful Control of Dispersion and 3D Network Structures: Advances in Functional Organic–Inorganic Nano-Hybrid Materials Prepared Using the Sol-Gel Method

Organic–inorganic hybrid materials have become indispensable high-performance and highly functional materials. This is owing to the improved dispersion control in hybrid materials and emergence of functional ionic liquids. Harmonization of both these factors has enabled the utilization of functional 3D network structures and nanodispersions in composite materials. Polymeric materials endow materials with flexibility, toughness, and shape-memory properties, whereas inorganic materials provide materials with unique optical, electrical, and magnetic properties due to their nanosize. Organic–inorganic hybrid materials have evolved into novel materials that go beyond the composite rule. In this review, the historical development of hybrid materials prepared using the sol-gel method and the birth of ionic liquids have been summarized. In addition, the historical results leading to the development of functional 3D network structures and dispersion control have also been presented, as well as a review of the research on functional ionic liquids, which are of current interest. The authors also summarize the results of their research on functional ionic liquids. The design of new organic–inorganic hybrid materials has been discussed and the future prospects of new polymer composite materials provided.

Coloured hybrid materials: exploiting an emergent surface property of fluorinated Al2O3 containing anthocyanins and betacyanins

Two fluorinated γ-Al₂O₃ series were synthesized by a sol-gel method with two solvents (2-propanol and 2-butanol), two aluminium sources (ATB and ATP) and one fluorine source (Na₃AlF₆). The resulting inorganic matrixes were evaluated to characterize aluminium and fluorine species ([AlO₄^5-], [AlO₅^7-], [AlO₆^9-], [AlF₄^-], [AlF₅^2-] and [AlF₆^3-]) by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ²⁷Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (²⁷Al MAS-NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR-ATR). BET and BJH analyses using the nitrogen isotherms of these materials allowed identifying a clear trend in some textural parameters such as specific surface area and fluorine content. These results were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Chemical affinity and acid surface properties were evidenced with colour shifts in two groups of hybrid pigments, prepared with natural anthocyanins (Brassica oleracea) and betacyanins (Bougainvillea glabra).

Tenebrio molitor Larvae-Based Magnetic Polyurea Employed as Crude Oil Spill Removal Tool

Renewable resources constitute an extremely rich and varied set of molecules and polymers produced by natural biological activities. Within the applications of these polymers, a very important application is the use of these materials as a sorber for oils or oil spills. The advantage of these nanocomposites is the fact that they integrate different component materials and their properties into a single component material. They have several applications, ranging from environmental remediation to the development of advanced medical applications. This work proposed using magnetic polyurea composites based on an animal substrate from Tenebrio molitor larvae to perform oil spill clean-up operations under a magnetic field in the presence of 1% and 3% of magnetite to be tested as magnetic crude oil sorber. The obtained materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Differential Calorimetry (DSC), and Low-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (LF-NMR 1H). The sorber material is simple to prepare and inexpensive. The use of magnetite as a magnetic charge allowed for the efficient removal of oil from water with about 28 g of oil per gram of sorber. These results are very promising and encouraging for future environmental recovery studies involving magnetite and sustainable polymers.

New Approach toward Dual-Emissive Organic-Inorganic Hybrids by Integrating Mn(II) and Cu(I) Emission Centers in Ionic Crystals

Inorganic-organic hybrid luminescent materials have received great attention for their potential applications in a wide range of clean/renewable energy-related areas, including photovoltaics and solid-state lighting. Herein, we present a unique and general "Mn + Cu" approach by blending two earth-abundant luminogenic metals, manganese and copper, within a single ionic structure to construct a remarkable family of low-cost and multifunctional hybrid materials featuring dual emission, as well as triboluminescence and second-harmonic generation response. The novel hybrid materials are made of diphosphine dioxide-chelated [Mn(O∧O)₃]²⁺ cations and various anionic [Cu_xI_y]^(y-x)- clusters, ensuring manifestation of dual phosphorescence streamed from octahedral Mn²⁺ ions (605-648 nm) and iodocuprate anions (480-728 nm). Noteworthily, the relative ratio of the emission bands, and hence a resulting emission chromaticity, can be tuned in a wide range through modification of cluster [Cu_xI_y]^(y-x)- modules. The structural diversity, enhanced robustness, and up to 100% luminescence quantum yield make the designed materials promising phosphors for lighting and sensing applications.

Green hydrothermal synthesis yields perylenebisimide-SiO2 hybrid materials with solution-like fluorescence and photoredox activity

In organic-inorganic hybrid materials' (HMs) synthesis, it is intrinsically challenging to, at the same time, achieve (i) the concomitant synthesis of the components, (ii) nanoscopic interpenetration of the components, and (iii) covalent linking of the components. We here report the one-pot hydrothermal synthesis (HTS) of inorganic-organic HMs consisting of perylene bisimide (PBI) dyes and silica, using nothing but water as the medium and directly from the corresponding bisanhydrides, n-alkyl amines, and alkoxysilane precursors. First, in the absence of a functionalized alkoxysilane for linking, a mixture of the products, PBI and SiO₂, is obtained. This evinces that the two products can be synthesized in parallel in the same vessel. Except for minor micromorphological changes, the concomitant synthesis does not affect each component's physicochemical properties. The PBI/SiO₂ mixtures do not show synergistic properties. Second, through adding the linker aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS), covalently-linked class II hybrids are obtained. These PBI@SiO₂ class II hybrids show synergistic materials properties: increased thermal stability is obtained in combination with nanoscopic homogeneity. The PBI moieties are dissolved in the solid SiO₂ matrix, while being covalently linked to the matrix. This leads to solution-like fluorescence with vibronic fine-structure of the dyes. Moreover, through tuning the SiO₂ amount, the band gaps of the class II hybrid materials can be systematically shifted. We exploit these optoelectronic properties by using the PBI@SiO₂ hybrids as heterogeneous and reusable photoredox catalysts for the reduction of aryl halides. Finally, we present a detailed small-angle X-ray scattering and powder X-ray diffraction study of PBI@SiO₂ synthesized at various reaction times, revealing the existence of an ordered PBI-oligomeric silesquioxane-type intermediate, which subsequently further condenses to the final nanoscopically homogeneous PBI@SiO₂ material. These ordered intermediates point at HTS' propensity to favor crystallinity (to date known for organic and inorganic compounds, respectively) to also apply to hybrid structures, and shed additional light on the long-standing question of structure formation in the early stages of sol-gel processes: they corroborate Brown's hypothesis (1965) that trifunctional hydroxysilanes form surprisingly well controlled oligomers in the early stages of polycondensation.

Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Materials and Interfaces With Mixed Ionic-Electronic Transport Properties: Advances in Experimental and Theoretical Approaches

The main goal of this mini-review is to provide an updated state-of-the-art of the hybrid organic-inorganic materials focusing mainly on interface phenomena involving ionic and electronic transport properties. First, we review the most relevant preparation techniques and the structural features of hybrid organic-inorganic materials prepared by solution-phase reaction of inorganic/organic precursor into organic/inorganic hosts and vapor-phase infiltration of the inorganic precursor into organic hosts and molecular layer deposition of organic precursor onto the inorganic surface. Particular emphasis is given to the advances in joint experimental and theoretical studies discussing diverse types of computational simulations for hybrid-organic materials and interfaces. We make a specific revision on the separately ionic, and electronic transport properties of these hybrid organic-inorganic materials focusing mostly on interface phenomena. Finally, we deepen into mixed ionic-electronic transport properties and provide our concluding remarks and give some perspectives about this growing field of research.

Robustness of hydrogen bonding in the construction of supramolecular architectures in protonated perchlorate salts

Five new multicomponent salts of perchloric acid with a series of substituted anilines and N-heterocyclic amines namely Diphenylaminium perchlorate (DPAPC) (1), 2, 5-dichloroanilinium perchlorate (25DAP) hydrate (2), 4-Methylanilinium perchlorate (4MAPC) (3), 4-diamino-6-methyl-1, 3, 5-triazin-1-ium hydrogen perchlorate (24DAMTHP) (4), and 8-hydroxyquinolinium hydrogen perchlorate (8HQP) (5) were prepared and structurally characterized. The entire complexes were subjected to FTIR and elemental analysis. A vast family of intermolecular contacts N-H…O, O-H…O, N-H…N, and C-H…O was observed, which are key ingredient in the generation of privileged supramolecular self-assemblies appeared as one-dimensional chain, two-dimensional ladder, and helix. Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) analysis of 52 hits revealed the perchloric acid display higher propensity of ladder architectures. Molecular stability of the complexes was studied by quantum chemical calculations using DFT/B3LYP method with 6-31G(d,p) basis set. Furthermore, their relative charge distributions were identified using molecular electrostatic potential map. The use of Hirshfeld surfaces in combination with fingerprint plots was visualized in order to study the closer contacts within the molecule. The relative contribution of the whole percentage of interactions associated is highlighted.

Polymer-hybrid nanosystems for antiviral applications: Current advances

The emergence of many new viruses in recent times has resulted in a significant scientific challenge for discovering drugs and vaccines that effectively treat and prevent viral diseases. Nanotechnology has opened doors to prevent the spread of several diseases, including those caused by viruses. Polymer-hybrid nanodevices are a class of nanotechnology platforms for biomedical applications that present synergistic properties among their components, with improved performance compared to conventional forms of therapy. Considering the growing interest in this emerging field and the promising technological advantages of polymer-hybrid nanodevices, this work presents the current status of these systems in the context of prevention and treatment of viral diseases. A brief description of the different types of polymer-hybrid nanodevices highlighting some peculiar characteristics such as their composition, biodistribution, delivery of antigens, and overall immune responses in systemic tissues are discussed. Finally, the work presents the future trends for new nanotechnological hybrid materials based on polymers and perspectives for clinical use.

Tuning magnetic properties by crystal engineering in a family of coordination polymers based on Ni(ii) sulphates

A new family of hybrid organic–inorganic layered materials based on nickel sulfates was synthesized using a one-pot, solvent-free synthetic approach using 1,2-phenylenediamine (OPD), 1,3-phenylenediamine (MPD) and 1,4-phenylenediamine (PPD).

Role of terminal groups in aromatic molecules on the growth of Al2O3-based hybrid materials

Hybrid materials composed of organic and inorganic components offer the opportunity to develop interesting materials with well-controlled properties. Molecular Layer Deposition (MLD) is a suitable thin film deposition technique for the controlled growth of thin, conformal hybrid films. Despite the great interest in these materials, a detailed understanding of the atomistic mechanism of MLD film growth is still lacking. This paper presents a first principles investigation of the detailed mechanism of the growth of hybrid organic-inorganic thin films of aluminium oxide and aromatic molecules with different terminal groups deposited by MLD. We investigate the chemistry of the MLD process between the post-TMA pulse methyl-terminated Al₂O₃ surface and the homo- or hetero-bifunctional aromatic compounds with hydroxy (OH) and/or amino (NH₂) terminal groups: hydroquinone (HQ), p-phenylenediamine (PD) and 4-aminophenol (AP). Double reactions of aromatic molecules with the alumina surface are also explored. We show that all aromatic precursor molecules bind favourably to the methyl terminated Al₂O₃, via formation of Al-O and Al-N bonds and CH₄ elimination. While reaction energetics suggest a higher reactivity of the OH group with TMA in comparison to the NH₂ group, which could enable the double reaction phenomenon for HQ, we propose that the upright configuration will be present so that the organic molecules are self-assembled in an upright configuration, which leads to thicker hybrid films. Interactions between the methyl-terminated Al₂O₃ with substituted phenyls are investigated to examine the influence of phenyl functionalisation on the chemistry of the terminal groups. Reaction energetics show that phenyl functionalization actually promotes an upright configuration of the molecule, which leads to thicker and more flexible films, as well as tuning the properties of the aromatic components of the hybrid films. We also investigate the interactions between methyl-terminated Al₂O₃ with new possible MLD organic precursors, hydroquinone bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ether and 1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine. DFT shows that both aromatic molecules react favourably with TMA and are worthy of further experimental investigation.

Cellulose-Based Hybrid Aerogels: Strategies toward Design and Functionality

The brittle nature of early aerogels developed from inorganic precursors fueled the discovery of their organic counterparts. Prominent among these organics are cellulose aerogels because of their natural abundance, biocompatibility, sustainable precursors, and tunable properties. The hierarchical structure of cellulose, from polymers to nano/microfibers, further facilitates fabrication of materials across multiple length scales with added applicability. However, the inherent flammability, structural fragility, and low thermal stability have limited their use. Recently developed cellulose-based hybrid aerogels offer strong potential owing to their tunability and enhanced functionality brought about by combining the inherent properties of cellulose with organic and inorganic components. A survey of the historical background and scientific achievements in the design and development of cellulose-based hybrid aerogel materials is encompassed here. The impacts of incorporating organic and inorganic ingredients with cellulose and the corresponding synergistic effects are discussed in terms of their design and functionality. The underlying principles governing the structural integration and functionality enhancement are also analyzed. The latest developments of cellulose-based hybrid aerogels fabricated from nontraditional incipient aerogels, such as fibrous webs, are also explored. Finally, future opportunities that could make these materials achieve even greater impacts through improved scalability, rationally designed synthesis, and multifunctional properties are discussed.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Asymmetric Mesoporous PTFE/Clay Composite Membranes for Textile Wastewater Treatment

Asymmetric mesoporous composite PTFE membranes wit 40, 50, and 85 wt.% of a clay (kaolin) were fabricated and characterized using a scanning electron microscope equipped with EDX for morphology and elemental analysis. The surface chemistry of the membranes was checked using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effect of incorporating the clay on the hydrophilicity, permeability, morphology, and antifouling properties of the fabricated membranes was investigated. It was observed that incorporating kaolin particles improved the mechanical properties but decreased the contact angle of the membranes, thereby resulting in an improvement in the membrane permeability. The performance of the three composite UF membranes was evaluated through the treatment of a real textile effluent sample containing indigo dye. The results confirmed that these membranes are effective in the removal of COD, color, and turbidity. Indeed, at a transmembrane pressure of 2.5 bar, almost total removal of the turbidity, COD removal > 85%, and color removal > 97% were attained. Furthermore, membrane A85 (with 85% clay) showed the best performance, with a water flux of 659.1 L·h^-1·m^-2·bar^-1. This study highlights the potential of incorporating low-cost clay material for the enhancement of the performance of mixed organic/inorganic matrix membranes, which can be applied to textile wastewater treatment.

Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks: Recent developments in synthesis, modifications and bioimaging applications

Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as eye-catching materials in recent years. They are widely used in numerous fields of chemistry thanks to their desirable properties. MOFs have a key role in the development of bioimaging platforms that are hopefully expected to effectually pave the way for accurate and selective detection and diagnosis of abnormalities. Recently, many types of MOFs have been employed for detection of RNA, DNA, enzyme activity and small-biomolecules, as well as for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), which are valuable methods for clinical analysis. The optimal performance of the MOF in the bio-imaging field depends on the core structure, synthesis method and modifications processes. In this review, we have attempted to present crucial parameters for designing and achieving an efficient MOF as bioimaging platforms, and provide a roadmap for researchers in this field. Moreover, the influence of modifications/fractionalizations on MOFs performance has been thoroughly discussed and challenging problems have been extensively addressed. Consideration is mainly focused on the principal concepts and applications that have been achieved to modify and synthesize advanced MOFs for future applications.

Predicting the Conformation of Organic Catalysts Grafted on Silica Surfaces with Different Numbers of Tethering Chains: The Silicopodality Concept

Hybrid catalysts are attracting much attention, since they combine the versatility and efficiency of homogeneous organic catalysis with the robustness and thermal stability of solid materials, for example, mesoporous silica; in addition, they can be used in cascade reactions, for exploring both organic and inorganic catalysis at the same time. Despite the importance of the organic/inorganic interface in these materials, the effect of the grafting architecture on the final conformation of the organic layer (and hence its reactivity) is still largely unexplored. Here, we investigate a series of organosiloxanes comprising a pyridine ring (the catalyst model) and different numbers of alkylsiloxane chains used to anchor it to the MCM-41 surface. The hybrid interfaces are characterized with X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analyses, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance techniques and are modeled theoretically through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, to determine the relationship between the number of chains and the average position of the pyridine group; MD simulations also provide some insights about temperature and solvent effects.

Covalent Linkage of BODIPY-Photosensitizers to Anderson-Type Polyoxometalates Using CLICK Chemistry

The covalent attachment of molecular photosensitizers (PS) to polyoxometalates (POMs) opens new pathways to PS‐POM dyads for light‐driven charge‐transfer and charge‐storage. Here, we report a synthetic route for the covalent linkage of BODIPY‐dyes to Anderson‐type polyoxomolybdates by using CLICK chemistry (i. e. copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition, CuAAC). Photophysical properties of the dyad were investigated by combined experimental and theoretical methods and highlight the role of both sub‐components for the charge‐separation properties. The study demonstrates how CLICK chemistry can be used for the versatile linkage of organic functional units to molecular metal oxide clusters.

One-Dimensional Hydrogen-Bonded N–H…O in the Hybrid Phosphate: Hirshfeld Surface Analysis and DFT Quantum Chemical Calculations

In the present work the 3D-supramolecular network is stabilized by N–H…O and O–H…O hydrogen bonds, by O…N interactions involving the organic cation and inorganic anion as checked by Hirshfeld surface analysis. The van der Waals contacts play a key role in the consolidation of the packing of 4-chloro-2-methylanilinium dihydrogenphosphate[4-CMDHP] structure. In order to support experimental results, density functional theory calculations have been performed using B3LYP functional with 3-21 G basis set. All of the obtained theoretical results are in a perfect agreement with the experimental ones. Furthermore, nonlinear optical behavior of 4-CMDHP has been investigated by determining the Hirshfeld surface, density of states and HOMO-LUMO energy gap using the same basis set. Finally, the molecular electrostatic potential surface of 4-CMDHP molecule was simulated and discussed.

A State-of-the-Art Review on Integral Transform Technique in Laser-Material Interaction: Fourier and Non-Fourier Heat Equations

Heat equations can estimate the thermal distribution and phase transformation in real-time based on the operating conditions and material properties. Such wonderful features have enabled heat equations in various fields, including laser and electron beam processing. The integral transform technique (ITT) is a powerful general-purpose semi-analytical/numerical method that transforms partial differential equations into a coupled system of ordinary differential equations. Under this category, Fourier and non-Fourier heat equations can be implemented on both equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermo-dynamical processes, including a wide range of processes such as the Two-Temperature Model, ultra-fast laser irradiation, and biological processes. This review article focuses on heat equation models, including Fourier and non-Fourier heat equations. A comparison between Fourier and non-Fourier heat equations and their generalized solutions have been discussed. Various components of heat equations and their implementation in multiple processes have been illustrated. Besides, literature has been collected based on ITT implementation in various materials. Furthermore, a future outlook has been provided for Fourier and non-Fourier heat equations. It was found that the Fourier heat equation is simple to use but involves infinite speed heat propagation in comparison to the non-Fourier heat equation and can be linked with the Two-Temperature Model in a natural way. On the other hand, the non-Fourier heat equation is complex and involves various unknowns compared to the Fourier heat equation. Fourier and Non-Fourier heat equations have proved their reliability in the case of laser-metallic materials, electron beam-biological and -inorganic materials, laser-semiconducting materials, and laser-graphene material interactions. It has been identified that the material properties, electron-phonon relaxation time, and Eigen Values play an essential role in defining the precise results of Fourier and non-Fourier heat equations. In the case of laser-graphene interaction, a restriction has been identified from ITT. When computations are carried out for attosecond pulse durations, the laser wavelength approaches the nucleus-first electron separation distance, resulting in meaningless results.

A Covalent Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Superlattice Covered with Organic Functional Groups for Highly Sensitive and Selective Gas Sensing

Organic-inorganic hybrid superlattices (OIHSLs) hold attractive physical and chemical properties, while the construction of single-crystal covalent OIHSLs has not been achieved. Herein a coordination assembly strategy was proposed to create a single-crystal covalent OIHSL PbBDT (BDT=1,4-benzenedithiolate), where layered [PbS₂ ] sublattice covalently connects with benzene sublattice. The covalent bonding offers better thermo-/chemi-stability, inter-sublattice electron transport, and unique organic-group-functionalized surface, which may enable better performances in chemical applications than non-covalent OIHSL. These features endow PbBDT with the highest sensitivity, the lowest detection limit and excellent selectivity towards NO₂ at room temperature among all chemiresistive gas-sensing materials with reported response time less than 2 min without the need of light assistance.

Structure and Bottom-up Formation Mechanism of Multisheet Silica-Based Nanoparticles Formed in an Epoxy Matrix through an In Situ Process

Organic/inorganic hybrid composite materials with the dispersed phases in sizes down to a few tens of nanometers raised very great interest. In this paper, it is shown that silica/epoxy nanocomposites with a silica content of 6 wt % may be obtained with an "in situ" sol-gel procedure starting from two precursors: tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES). APTES also played the role of a coupling agent. The use of advanced techniques (bright-field high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, HRTEM, and combined small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) performed by means of a multirange device Ganesha 300 XL+) allowed us to evidence a multisheet structure of the nanoparticles instead of the gel one typically obtained through a sol-gel route. A mechanism combining in a new manner well-assessed knowledge regarding sol-gel chemistry, emulsion formation, and Ostwald ripening allowed us to give an explanation for the formation of the observed lamellar nanoparticles.

Recent Progress in (Photo-)-Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 With Metal Porphyrinoid-Systems

Since decades, the global community has been facing an environmental crisis, resulting in the need to switch from outdated to new, more efficient energy sources and a more effective way of tackling the rising carbon dioxide emissions. The activation of small molecules such as O₂, H⁺, and CO₂ in a cost—and energy-efficient way has become one of the key topics of catalysis research. The main issue concerning the activation of these molecules is the kinetic barrier that has to be overcome in order for the catalyzed reaction to take place. Nature has already provided many pathways in which small molecules are being activated and changed into compounds with higher energy levels. One of the most famous examples would be photosynthesis in which CO₂ is transformed into glucose and O₂ through sunlight, thus turning solar energy into chemical energy. For these transformations nature mostly uses enzymes that function as catalysts among which porphyrin and porphyrin-like structures can be found. Therefore, the research focus lies on the design of novel porphyrinoid systems (e.g. corroles, porphyrins and phthalocyanines) whose metal complexes can be used for the direct electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to valuable chemicals like carbon monoxide, formate, methanol, ethanol, methane, ethylene, or acetate. For example the cobalt(III)triphenylphosphine corrole complex has been used as a catalyst for the electroreduction of CO₂ to ethanol and methanol. The overall goal and emphasis of this research area is to develop a method for industrial use, raising the question of whether and how to incorporate the catalyst onto supportive materials. Graphene oxide, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon black, and activated carbon, to name a few examples, have become researched options. These materials also have a beneficial effect on the catalysis through for instance preventing rival reactions such as the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) during CO₂ reduction. It is very apparent that the topic of small molecule activation offers many solutions for our current energy as well as environmental crises and is becoming a thoroughly investigated research objective. This review article aims to give an overview over recently gained knowledge and should provide a glimpse into upcoming challenges relating to this subject matter.

Hybrid Xerogels: Study of the Sol-Gel Process and Local Structure by Vibrational Spectroscopy

The properties of hybrid silica xerogels obtained by the sol-gel method are highly dependent on the precursor and the synthesis conditions. This study examines the influence of organic substituents of the precursor on the sol-gel process and determines the structure of the final materials in xerogels containing tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and alkyltriethoxysilane or chloroalkyltriethoxysilane at different molar percentages (RTEOS and ClRTEOS, R = methyl [M], ethyl [E], or propyl [P]). The intermolecular forces exerted by the organic moiety and the chlorine atom of the precursors were elucidated by comparing the sol-gel process between alkyl and chloroalkyl series. The microstructure of the resulting xerogels was explored in a structural theoretical study using Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and deconvolution methods, revealing the distribution of (SiO)₄ and (SiO)₆ rings in the silicon matrix of the hybrid xerogels. The results demonstrate that the alkyl chain and the chlorine atom of the precursor in these materials determines their inductive and steric effects on the sol-gel process and, therefore, their gelation times. Furthermore, the distribution of (SiO)₄ and (SiO)₆ rings was found to be consistent with the data from the X-ray diffraction spectra, which confirm that the local periodicity associated with four-fold rings increases with higher percentage of precursor. Both the sol-gel process and the ordered domains formed determine the final structure of these hybrid materials and, therefore, their properties and potential applications.

DFT study of superhalogen-doped borophene with enhanced nonlinear optical properties

The concern of the present study is to investigate the nonlinear optical properties of superhalogen-doped borophene owing to its broad applications. The first principle study of the material for its nonlinear optical properties elaborated its use for electrical and optical applications. The superhalogen-based borophene in lithium ion-based batteries and medical appliances have made it one of the most potential materials for optoelectronics. First, hyperpolarizability (β_o) of pure and doped B₃₆ is computed, and the difference between their values was examined. The vertical ionization energy (VIE) was calculated for pure and doped systems. The interaction energy (E_i) for all combinations was computed. It would be expected to be one of the best materials to have high capacity and resistance. For all the calculations and to calculate the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gap, the density functional theory (DFT) method was used. It is predicted that these combinations are more beneficial and can display better nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in electronic devices. Superhalogen-doped BF₄ borophene-36 ground state optimized geometry, frontier molecular orbitals HOMO and LUMO, maximum absorption (λ_max), density of states (DOS) analysis, and electrostatic potential diagram (MEP) are displayed here_.

The Structure, Morphology, and Complex Permittivity of Epoxy Nanodielectrics with In Situ Synthesized Surface-Functionalized SiO2

Epoxy nanocomposites have demonstrated promising properties for high-voltage insulation applications. An in situ approach to the synthesis of epoxy-SiO2 nanocomposites was employed, where surface-functionalized SiO2 (up to 5 wt.%) is synthesized directly in the epoxy. The dispersion of SiO2 was found to be affected by both the pH and the coupling agent used in the synthesis. Hierarchical clusters of SiO2 (10-60 nm) formed with free-space lengths of 53-105 nm (increasing with pH or SiO2 content), exhibiting both mass and surface-fractal structures. Reducing the amount of coupling agent resulted in an increase in the cluster size (~110 nm) and the free-space length (205 nm). At room temperature, nanocomposites prepared at pH 7 exhibited up to a 4% increase in the real relative permittivity with increasing SiO2 content, whereas those prepared at pH 11 showed up to a 5% decrease with increasing SiO2 content. Above the glass transition, all the materials exhibited low-frequency dispersion effect resulting in electrode polarization, which was amplified in the nanocomposites. Improvements in the dielectric properties were found to be not only dependent on the state of dispersion, but also the structure and morphology of the inorganic nanoparticles.

Novel Organochlorinated Xerogels: From Microporous Materials to Ordered Domains

Hybrid silica xerogels combine the properties of organic and inorganic components in the same material, making them highly promising and versatile candidates for multiple applications. They can be tailored for specific purposes through chemical modifications, and the consequent changes in their structures warrant in-depth investigation. We describe the synthesis of three new series of organochlorinated xerogels prepared by co-condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and chloroalkyltriethoxysilane (ClRTEOS; R = methyl [M], ethyl [E], or propyl [P]) at different molar ratios. The influence of the precursors on the morphological and textural properties of the xerogels was studied using ²⁹Si NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), FTIR (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), N₂, and CO₂ adsorption, XRD (X-ray Diffraction), and FE-SEM (Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy). The structure and morphology of these materials are closely related to the nature and amount of the precursor, and their microporosity increases proportionally to the molar percentage of ClRTEOS. In addition, the influence of the chlorine atom was investigated through comparison with their non-chlorinated analogues (RTEOS, R = M, E, or P) prepared in previous studies. The results showed that a smaller amount of precursor was needed to detect ordered domains (ladders and T₈ cages) in the local structure. The possibility of coupling self-organization with tailored porosity opens the way to novel applications for this type of organically modified silicates.

Characterization of Hybrid Materials Prepared by Sol-Gel Method for Biomedical Implementations. A Critical Review

The interaction between tissues and biomaterials (BM) has the purpose of improving and replacing anatomical parts of the human body, avoiding the occurrence of adverse reactions in the host organism. Unfortunately, the early failure of implants cannot be currently avoided, since neither a good mixture of mechanical and chemical characteristics of materials nor their biocompatibility has been yet achieved. Bioactive glasses are recognized to be a fine class of bioactive substances for good repair and replacement. BM interact with living bones through the formation of a hydroxyapatite surface layer that is analogous to bones. Bioglasses' composition noticeably affects their biological properties, as does the synthesis method, with the best one being the versatile sol-gel technique, which includes the change of scheme from a 'sol' fluid into a 'gel'. This process is widely used to prepare many materials for biomedical implants (e.g., hip and knee prostheses, heart valves, and ceramic, glassy and hybrid materials to serve as carriers for drug release). Nanoparticles prepared by the sol-gel method are interesting systems for biomedical implementations, and particularly useful for cancer therapy. This review provides many examples concerning the synthesis and characterization of the above-mentioned materials either taken from literature and from recently prepared zirconia/polyethylene glycol (PEG) hybrids, and the corresponding results are extensively discussed.

High-Pressure Structural Phase Transformation of Ferroelectric Bis-benzylammonium Lead Tetrachloride Studied by Raman Spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction

Hybrid organic-inorganic 2-D perovskite bis-benzylammonium lead tetrachloride (BALC) is a room-temperature ferroelectric semiconductor. A structural phase transformation from the ambient Cmc2₁ structure is evident at 1.8 GPa from the Raman spectra, and this is confirmed by our high-pressure X-ray diffraction studies that point to a centrosymmetric structure Cmcm at 1.7 GPa. The ambient phase is recoverable on decompression. Using density functional theory calculations, we have studied the intermolecular and intramolecular vibrations to get an idea of the structural changes as a function of pressure. The high-pressure transition is identified to be due to a distortion in the PbCl₆ octahedra and a conformation change in the molecule. There are several discontinuities, broadening, and splitting of the Raman bands, corresponding to NH₃ units above 1.8 GPa that point to rearrangements in the hydrogen bond network in the new phase. The ambient structure shows anisotropic compressibility, with a bulk modulus of 14.5 ± 0.33 GPa. As the new phase is a centrosymmetric structure, BALC is expected to lose its ferroelectricity above ∼1.8 GPa.

Fast Curable Polysiloxane-Silphenylene Hybrimer with High Transparency and Refractive Index for Optical Applications

In this study, a fast curable polysiloxane-silphenylene hybrimer (PSH) was synthesized by the nonhydrolytic sol–gel condensation of phenyl-vinyl-oligosiloxane (PVO) and tris(dimethylhydrosilyl)benzene (TDMSB) under a Pt catalyst to investigate its optical property and thermal stability. The combination of PVO and tripod-type TDMSB results in a hybrimer with a fast curing time of 30 min. The PSH exhibited a high refractive index of 1.60, 1.59, and 1.58 at 450, 520, and 635 nm, respectively. High transmittance of 97% at 450 nm was obtained. The PSH exhibited a very high transmittance of 97% before thermal aging. The high optical transmittance of the PSH was only slightly decreased by 0.5% of the transmittance at 180 °C for 72 h after thermal aging, and high transparency was maintained almost constant even after 72 h of high-temperature treatment.
