Abstract
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, requires large amounts of water to extract fossil fuel from rock formations. As a result of hydraulic fracturing, the briny wastewater, often termed back-produced fracturing or fracking water (FW), is pumped into holding ponds. One of the biggest challenges with produced water management is controlling microbial activity that could reduce the pond water's reusable layer and pose a significant environmental hazard. This study focuses on the characterization of back-produced water that has been hydraulically fractured using chemical and biological analysis and the development of a high-throughput screening method to evaluate and predict the antimicrobial effect of four naturally and commercially available acidic inhibitors (edetic acid, boric acid, tannic acid, and lactic acid) on the growth of the FW microbiome. Liquid cultures and biofilms of two laboratory model strains, the vegetative Escherichia coli MG1655, and the spore-forming Bacillus atrophaeus (also known as Bacillus globigii, BG) bacteria, were used as reference microorganisms. Planktonic bacteria in FW were more sensitive to antimicrobials than sessile bacteria in biofilms. Spore-forming BG bacteria exhibited more sensitivity to acidic inhibitors than the vegetative E. coli cells. Organic acids were the most effective bacterial growth inhibitors in liquid culture and biofilm.

Abstract
Citrate-based biodegradable polymers have emerged as a distinctive biomaterial platform with tremendous potential for diverse medical applications. By harnessing their versatile chemistry, these polymers exhibit a wide range of material and bioactive properties, enabling them to regulate cell metabolism and stem cell differentiation through energy metabolism, metabonegenesis, angiogenesis, and immunomodulation. Moreover, the recent US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance of the biodegradable poly(octamethylene citrate) (POC)/hydroxyapatite-based orthopedic fixation devices represents a translational research milestone for biomaterial science. POC joins a short list of biodegradable synthetic polymers that have ever been authorized by the FDA for use in humans. The clinical success of POC has sparked enthusiasm and accelerated the development of next-generation citrate-based biomaterials. This review presents a comprehensive, forward-thinking discussion on the pivotal role of citrate chemistry and metabolism in various tissue regeneration and on the development of functional citrate-based metabotissugenic biomaterials for regenerative engineering applications.

Abstract
Chocolate agar (CA) is an enriched medium for the isolation and identification of fastidious bacteria. Defibrinated blood is used to manufacture CA, but this expensive product is not always affordable for companies in developing countries. Blood powder (BP) is potentially a cheaper alternative, although its pre-treatment using autoclaving can impair the quality of the media. Therefore, optimization of BP as a substitute for defibrinated blood for CA manufacture deserves further research. CA was manufactured with irradiated BP (dehydrated bovine blood powder) and its physical and microbiological characteristics were compared with those of conventional CA and CA prepared with autoclaved BP. Each medium was seeded with 20-200 CFU of target bacteria using the spiral pouring method. Finally, another medium was prepared using BP pre-treated by grinding and gamma irradiation and its performance assessed. Compared to conventional CA, the medium containing ground and irradiated BP provided a similar CFU count for both fastidious (Neisseria, Haemophilus, Campylobacter, and Streptococcus) and non-fastidious (Moraxella, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas) species, unlike the medium prepared with BP subjected only to irradiation, which provided a lower growth of fastidious species. Morphology and characteristics of all bacterial colonies were very similar in conventional CA and the new medium, the number of Pseudomonas CFU being higher in the latter. The medium prepared with ground plus irradiated vs. irradiated BP more closely resembled conventional CA, having a browner background. The new CA medium prepared with ground and gamma irradiation-sterilized BP has comparable productivity properties to conventional CA. Therefore, it could be a more practical and economical methodology to facilitate large-scale CA manufacture.

Abstract
Background
Bacteriocins are generally defined as ribosomally synthesized peptides, which are produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that affect the growth of related or unrelated microorganisms. Conventionally, the extracted bacteriocins are purified by precipitation, where ammonium sulphate is added to precipitate out the protein from the solution.
Main text
To achieve the high purity of bacteriocins, a combination with chromatography is used where the hydrophobicity and cationic properties of bacteriocins are employed. The complexity column inside the chromatography can afford to resolve the loss of bacteriocins during the ammonium sulphate precipitation. Recently, an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) has been widely used in bacteriocins purification due to the several advantages of its operational simplicity, mild process conditions and versatility. It reduces the operation steps and processing time yet provides high recovery products which provide alternative ways to conventional methods in downstream processing. Bacteriocins are widely approached in the food and medical industry. In food application, nisin, which is produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp. has been introduced as food preservative due to its natural, toxicology safe and effective against the gram-positive bacteria. Besides, bacteriocins provide a board range in medical industries where they are used as antibiotics and probiotics.
Short conclusion
In summary, this review focuses on the downstream separation of bacteriocins from various sources using both conventional and recent ATPS techniques. Finally, recommendations for future interesting areas of research that need to be pursued are highlighted.

Abstract
The effects of biological factors on the vegetative growth process of mushrooms remain largely unexplored. We investigated the bacterial community in different growth stages of Pleurotus eryngii by high-throughput sequencing technology to explore the relationship between interacting bacteria and the growth and development of P. eryngii. We found significant variances in mushroom interacting association bacteria (MIAB) compositions among the samples from different growth stages, and 410 genera were identified. The bacteria in the full-bag and post-ripe stages were shifted to the biocontrol and growth-promotion ones. The mushroom growth-promoting bacteria (MGPB) were also isolated successfully and identified as B. cereus Bac1. The growth speed and density of mycelial pellets of P. eryngii, and activities of two exoenzymes (laccase and amylase), were analyzed by adding the different volumes of cell-free fermentation broth of B. cereus Bac1 to fungal culture media. The results showed that when a 5 mL cell-free fermentation broth was used, the growth speed of P. eryngii hyphae was enhanced by 1.15-fold over the control and reached 0.46 mm/h. The relative activity of laccase and amylase was increased by 26.9 and 43.83%. Our study revealed that the abundant interacting bacteria coexist with P. eryngii hyphae. Moreover, the abundance of some bacteria exhibiting a positive correlation with the growth periods of their host fungi can effectively promote the growth of the host, which will provide technical supports on the high-efficiency production of P. eryngii in factory cultivation.

Abstract
PURPOSE Novel particle engineering approach was used in this study to generate high dose inhalable effervescent particles with synergistic effects against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms. METHODS Spray dried co-amorphous salt of ciprofloxacin (CFX) and tartaric acid (TA) was prepared and coated with external layer of sodium bicarbonate and silica coated silver nanobeads. Design of experiments (DOE) was used to optimize physicochemical properties of particles for enhanced lung deposition. RESULTS Generated particles were co-amorphous CFX/TA showing that CFX lost its zwitterionic form and exhibiting distinct properties to CFX/HCl as assessed by FTIR and thermal analysis. Particles exhibited mass mean aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of 3.3 μm, emitted dose of 78% and fine particle dose of 85%. Particles were further evaluated via antimicrobial assessment of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC). MIC and MBEC results showed that the hybrid particles were around 3-5 times more effective when compared to CFX signifying that synergistic effect was achieved. Diffusing wave spectroscopy results showed that the silver containing particles had a disruptive effect on rheological properties as opposed to silver free particles. CONCLUSIONS Overall, these results showed the potential to use particle engineering to generate particles that are highly disruptive of bacterial biofilms.

Abstract
Arcobacter butzleri, recently emended to the Aliarcobacter butzleri comb. nov., is an emerging pathogen causing enteritis, severe diarrhea, septicaemia, and bacteraemia in humans and enteritis, stillbirth, and abortion in animals. Since its recognition as emerging pathogen on 2002, advancements have been made in elucidating its pathogenicity and epidemiology, also thanks to advent of genomics, which, moreover, contributed in emending its taxonomy. In this review, we provide an overview of the up-to-date taxonomy, ecology, and pathogenicity of this emerging pathogen. Moreover, the implication of A. butzleri in the safety of foods is pinpointed, and culture-dependent and independent detection, identification, and typing methods as well as strategies to control and prevent the survival and growth of this pathogen are provided.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to discuss the limitations surrounding the yoghurt industry and challenges to producing a bio-yoghurt tablet. The paper looks into challenge facing the yoghurt industry, such as manufacturing and distribution, its short shelf life, heat-sensitivity and relatively heavy weight. It further looks into the selection of strains, excipients and storage conditions with special consideration towards maintaining the viability of the probiotics inside bio-yoghurt tablets. The paper also discusses yoghurt standards and definitions across various countries and suggests a more uniform standard be embraced across countries for ease of categorization and production.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is divided into a few major sections; each exploring various aspects of the yoghurt industry. Topics discussed include challenges in yoghurt production and storage; processes involved in bio-yoghurt tablet production, e.g. maximising viability, choice of excipients and more; market trends of yoghurt consumption and potential; and various food standards in countries around the world with a focus on yoghurt.
Findings
The review finds that yoghurt is a segment of the food industry with big growth potential. Most of the problems associated with yoghurt, i.e. poor shelf life, and heavy weight, can be circumvented by transforming it into a bio-yoghurt tablet. The paper further identifies food standard variations among different countries around the world which could impede yoghurt manufacture and acceptance.
Originality/value
This paper looks the various challenges surrounding the increased uptake of yoghurt, specifically in the Asian markets and suggests a viable option to overcome this problem, i.e. the use of a bio-yoghurt tablet. Should the worldwide bodies come together and agree to a universal standard involving yoghurt, the industry may see an even bigger expansion.

Abstract
ABSTRACT: Arcobacter is an emerging zoonotic pathogen, and the major transmission routes to humans are the handling or consumption of contaminated raw/undercooked food products of animal origin, water and seafood. The isolation and identification of Arcobacter species are not routine in clinical laboratories; therefore, its true incidence in human infections may be underestimated. The present study aimed to isolate and characterize Arcobacter from carcasses and fecal samples collected at swine slaughterhouses and from meat markets in São Paulo State, Brazil. The isolates were identified using multiplex-PCR to differentiate the species and analyzed by single-enzyme amplified fragment length polymorphism (SE-AFLP). Arcobacter spp. were isolated from 73.0% of swine carcasses, 4% of fecal samples and 10% of pork samples. A. butzleri was the most prevalent species identified, followed by A. cryaerophilus. Interestingly, the carcasses presented higher frequency of A. butzleri isolation, whereas only A. cryaerophilus was isolated from fecal samples. SE-AFLP enabled the characterization of A. butzleri and A. cryaerophilus into 51 and 63 profiles, respectively. The great genetic heterogeneity observed for both species corroborates previous reports. This study confirms the necessity for a standard isolation protocol and the improvement of molecular tools to further elucidate Arcobacter epidemiology.

Abstract
Arcobacter has emerged as an important food-borne zoonotic pathogen, causing sometimes serious infections in humans and animals. Newer species of Arcobacter are being incessantly emerging (presently 25 species have been identified) with novel information on the evolutionary mechanisms and genetic diversity among different Arcobacter species. These have been reported from chickens, domestic animals (cattle, pigs, sheep, horses, dogs), reptiles (lizards, snakes and chelonians), meat (poultry, pork, goat, lamb, beef, rabbit), vegetables and from humans in different countries. Arcobacters are implicated as causative agents of diarrhea, mastitis and abortion in animals, while causing bacteremia, endocarditis, peritonitis, gastroenteritis and diarrhea in humans. Three species including A. butzleri, A. cryaerophilus and A. skirrowii are predominantly associated with clinical conditions. Arcobacters are primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water sources. Identification of Arcobacter by biochemical tests is difficult and isolation remains the gold standard method. Current diagnostic advances have provided various molecular methods for efficient detection and differentiation of the Arcobacters at genus and species level. To overcome the emerging antibiotic resistance problem there is an essential need to explore the potential of novel and alternative therapies. Strengthening of the diagnostic aspects is also suggested as in most cases Arcobacters goes unnoticed and hence the exact epidemiological status remains uncertain. This review updates the current knowledge and many aspects of this important food-borne pathogen, namely etiology, evolution and emergence, genetic diversity, epidemiology, the disease in animals and humans, public health concerns, and advances in its diagnosis, prevention and control.

Abstract
The burden of foodborne disease has large economic and social consequences worldwide. Despite strict regulations, a number of pathogens persist within the food environment, which is greatly contributed to by a build-up of resistance mechanisms and also through the formation of biofilms. Biofilms have been shown to be highly resistant to a number of antimicrobials and can be extremely difficult to remove once they are established. In parallel, the growing concern of consumers regarding the use of chemically derived antimicrobials within food has led to a drive toward more natural products. As a consequence, the use of naturally derived antimicrobials has become of particular interest. In this study we investigated the efficacy of nisin A and its bioengineered derivative M21A in combination with food grade additives to treat biofilms of a representative foodborne disease isolate of Listeria monocytogenes. Investigations revealed the enhanced antimicrobial effects, in liquid culture, of M21A in combination with citric acid or cinnamaldehyde over its wild type nisin A counterpart. Subsequently, an investigation was conducted into the effects of these combinations on an established biofilm of the same strain. Nisin M21A (0.1 μg/ml) alone or in combination with cinnamaldehyde (35 μg/ml) or citric acid (175 μg/ml) performed significantly better than combinations involving nisin A. All combinations of M21A with either citric acid or cinnamaldehyde eradicated the L. monocytogenes biofilm (in relation to a non-biofilm control). We conclude that M21A in combination with available food additives could further enhance the antimicrobial treatment of biofilms within the food industry, simply by substituting nisin A with M21A in current commercial products such as Nisaplin® (Danisco, DuPont).

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the past few decades, the occurrence of superficial fungal infections has rapidly increased. As the fungal infections take longer time to get cured, concepts such as designing drugs with extended persistence and controlled release have gained attention. In this context, nanotechnology has been identified as the latest technological revolution which has opened up new pathways for designing new therapeutic materials. Out of the many available nano-structures layered double hydroxides have gained increased scientific attention in applications as slow and controlled release drug formulations. This study focuses on the encapsulation of citric acid which has anti-fungal properties into a Mg-Al- layered double hydroxide (LDH) in order to be used as slow release topical skin formulations. RESULTS Citrate ions were encapsulated into Mg-Al LDH using one step co-precipitation reaction. The successful intercalation of citrate ions into the layered structure has been proved referring to the expansion in the interlayer spacing as observed by the shift in the basal peak of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern. Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy data suggests the change in the electron density around the carboxylate groups of the citrate ion thus providing evidences for formation of encapsulated hybrid composite. The resulting nanohybrid has been then, introduced into a general body cream formulation containing cocoa-butter. Both citrate LDH and the resulting body cream formulations demonstrated prolonged slow release characteristics up to 8 h in aqueous medium under different pH values (3, 4, and 5) compared to quick and fast release of pure citric acid. It was observed that the slow reelase was most efficient at low pH values. The encapsulation between the nano-layers and citrate ions are the key to the slow release characteristics. The body cream has been tested for the anti-fungal activity against three common Candida species (C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis). The novel nanohybrid has shown an improved activity and slow release characteristics up to 48 h against the C. albicans and C. glabrata but not for C. tropicalis. CONCLUSION The study confirms that the citrate ion intercalated LDHs have the potential for use in future slow release antifungal drug formulation. Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study is to assess the antibacterial activity of sodium citrate against Streptococcus pneumoniae and several oral bacteria. METHODS AND RESULTS The antibacterial activity was determined by broth microdilution method. The results showed that although Enterocuccus faecium OB7084 and Klebsiella pneumoniae OB7088 had high tolerance to sodium citrate, several oral bacteria including Fusobacterium nucleatum JCM8532(T) , Streptococcus mutans JCM5705(T) and Strep. pneumoniae NBRC102642(T) were susceptible. Furthermore, the bactericidal activity of sodium citrate against Strep. pneumoniae NBRC102642(T) was not influenced by pH in the range of 5·0-8·0, whereas that of sodium lactate was weakened at neutral or weak alkaline pH. When Strep. pneumoniae NBRC102642(T) was treated with sodium citrate for 2 h, many burst cells were observed. However, addition of MgCl(2) or CaCl(2) to an assay medium weakened the antimicrobial activity although ZnCl(2) or MnCl(2) did not influence. CONCLUSIONS Independent of pH, sodium citrate inhibited the growth of oral bacteria, which suggests that the mechanism is different from that of sodium lactate. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The results presented in this study would be available for understanding the antimicrobial property of sodium citrate.

Abstract
Arcobacter spp. has been isolated from food of animal origin (particularly meats) and from various kind of water. Despite its phylogenetically related neighbor Campylobacter, Arcobacter is regarded as an emerging foodborne pathogen. Since Arcobacter differs in its phenotypic characteristics, the physical and chemical treatments designed for elimination of campylobacters from food and environment needs to be verified. This review focuses on the occurrence, and mainly on susceptibility to various physical and chemical treatments for inactivation of Arcobacter spp. The existing studies have been critically discussed and new challenges were proposed for further studies.

Abstract
Human blood agar (HuBA) is widely used in developing countries for the isolation of bacteria from clinical specimens. This study compared citrated sheep blood agar (CSBA) and HuBA with defibrinated horse blood agar and defibrinated sheep blood agar (DSBA) for the isolation and antibiotic susceptibility testing of reference and clinical strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus. Reference and clinical strains of all organisms were diluted in brain heart infusion and a clinical specimen of cerebrospinal fluid and cultured on all agars. Viable counts, colony morphology, and colony size were recorded. Susceptibility testing for S. pneumoniae and S. pyogenes was performed on defibrinated sheep blood Mueller-Hinton agar, citrated sheep blood Mueller-Hinton agar (CSB MHA), and human blood Mueller-Hinton agar plates. For all organisms, the colony numbers were similar on all agars. Substantially smaller colony sizes and absent or minimal hemolysis were noted on HuBA for all organisms. Antibiotic susceptibility results for S. pneumoniae were similar for the two sheep blood agars; however, larger zone sizes were displayed on HuBA, and quality control for the reference strain failed on HuBA. For S. pyogenes, larger zone sizes were demonstrated on HuBA and CSBA than on DSBA. Poor hemolysis made interpretation of the zone sizes difficult on HuBA. CSBA is an acceptable alternative for the isolation of these organisms. The characteristic morphology is not evident, and hemolysis is poor on HuBA; and so HuBA is not recommended for use for the isolation or the susceptibility testing of any of these organisms. CSB MHA may be suitable for use for the susceptibility testing of S. pneumoniae.

Abstract
In situ analyses of single Listeria monocytogenes cells at subinhibitory concentrations of leucocin 4010 and nisin revealed two subpopulations when measured by fluorescence ratio imaging microscopy (FRIM) after staining with 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester. One subpopulation consisted of cells with a dissipated pH gradient (DeltapH), and the other consisted of cells that maintained DeltapH. The proportion of cells belonging to each subpopulation was estimated, and the concentrations of bacteriocins required to dissipate DeltapH for 90% of the cell population (ED90) was predicted. ED90 increased after the addition of sodium chloride (1 to 3% [wt/vol]) to the bacteriocin solutions, while ED90 decreased by the addition of sodium nitrite (60 and 100 ppm). Other meat additives, including sodium phosphate, sodium lactate, sodium citrate, and sodium acetate slightly increased ED90. The inhibitory effect of sodium chloride on the antilisterial activity of leucocin 4010 and nisin was confirmed on the surfaces of meat sausages. This study highlights the important practical implications of applying subinhibitory concentrations of bacteriocins, which results in unaffected target cells. In situ analyses by FRIM in combination with modeling of single-cell data can be applied to ensure that sufficient concentrations of bacteriocins are used in food preservation.

Abstract
Arcobacter species are Gram-negative spiral-shaped organisms belonging to the family Campylobacteraceae that can grow microaerobically or aerobically. The Arcobacter organisms also have the ability to grow at 15 degrees C, which is a distinctive feature that differentiates Arcobacter species from Campylobacter species. Cultural detection of Arcobacter is generally performed by an enrichment step and takes 4 to 5 days. In the last few years, several studies comparing different culture-based protocols have been published. Furthermore, DNA-based assays have also been established for rapid and specific identification of Arcobacter spp. Recent evidence suggests that Arcobacter, especially A. Butzleri, may be involved in human enteric diseases. Moreover, A. butzleri has also occasionally been found in cases of human extraintestinal diseases. However, up to now, little is known about the mechanisms of pathogenicity or potential virulence factors of Arcobacter spp. There is evidence that livestock animals may be a significant reservoir of Arcobacter spp. and over the last few years, the presence of these organisms in raw meat products as well as in surface and ground water has received increasing attention. In view of control measures to be used to prevent or to eliminate the hazard of Arcobacter spp. in food, several treatments have been evaluated for their effectiveness. While the role of Arcobacter spp. in human disease awaits further evaluation, a precautionary approach is advisable. Measures aimed at reduction or eradication of Arcobacter from the human food chain should be encouraged. With this article, we review the recent literature on this organism with a special emphasis on the information relevant to food safety.

Abstract
The influence of weak organic acids and trisodium citrate in combination with a high or a reduced water activity (aw) was investigated when a population of Arcobacter butzleri was exposed to a low concentration of acetic or citric acid, and trisodium citrate combined with high (0.993) and reduced (0.977) aw in culture broth at 30 degrees C. Regardless of water activity, acetic and citric acid (> 0.2%) inhibited the growth of A. butzleri with no viable cells detected after 4-5 h of incubation. Enhanced survival was found at reduced aw with addition of acetic acid. In contrast, after exposure to citric acid in combination with reduced aw inactivation was more rapid than that after being exposed to high water activity. Incorporation of trisodium citrate in combination with reduced aw (0.977) would probably not confer any extra protection. Concentrations of organic acid widely used in meat decontamination processing represent feasible tools for reducing A. butzleri contamination and hence the risk of Arcobacter infection.

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes, a major foodborne pathogen, has been responsible for many outbreaks and recalls. Organic acids and antimicrobial peptides (bacteriocins) such as nisin are produced by lactic acid bacteria and are commercially used to control pathogens in some foods. This study examined the effects of lactic acid (LA) and its salts in combination with a commercial nisin preparation on the growth of L. monocytogenes Scott A and its nisin-resistant mutant. Because of an increase in its activity at a lower pH, nisin was more active against L. monocytogenes when used in combination with LA. Most of the salts of LA, including potassium lactate, at up to 5% partially inhibited the growth of L. monocytogenes and had no synergy with nisin. Zinc and aluminum lactate, as well as zinc and aluminum chloride (0.1%), worked synergistically with 100 IU of nisin per ml to control the growth of L. monocytogenes Scott A. No synergy was observed when zinc or aluminum lactate was used with nisin against nisin-resistant L. monocytogenes. The nisin-resistant strain was more sensitive to Zn lactate than was wild-type L. monocytogenes Scott A; however, the cellular ATP levels of the nisin-resistant strain were not significantly affected. Changes in the intracellular ATP levels of the wild-type strain support our hypothesis that pretreatment with zinc lactate sensitizes cells to nisin. The similar effects of thesalts of hydrochloric and lactic acids support the hypothesis that metal cations are responsible for synergy with nisin.

Abstract
AIMS Bactericidal activity of chlorine solution is enhanced by weak acidification. We compared the effects of various acids on the bactericidal activity of hypochlorite solution to establish a method for safe and effective use of an acidic hypochlorite solution. METHODS AND RESULTS The bactericidal activities of acidic hypochlorite solutions that had been adjusted to pH 5.0 with hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, citric acid, lactic acid, formic acid, phosphoric acid or sulphuric acid against Bacillus subtilis spores were compared. The acidic solutions prepared with hydrochloric acid and acetic acid showed the highest bactericidal activity, and all of the spores (5 x 106 cfu ml(-1)) were killed within 10 min. On the other hand, the solutions prepared with citric acid and lactic acid showed no bactericidal activity against any bacterial strains tested in this study despite the low pH. The amount of chlorine gas produced by the preparation using acetic acid was sixfold less than that produced from the preparation using hydrochloric acid. CONCLUSIONS Acetic acid is the most suitable and safe acid for the preparation of an acidic hypochlorite solution. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The results of this study provide useful information for establishing a method for safe and effective use of an acidic hypochlorite solution.

Abstract
Acetic, oxalic, malic, and citric acids significantly inhibited the growth of Colletotrichurm, gloeosporioides, a phytopathogenic fungus, and acetic acid showed the strongest inhibition with no growth at 50 mM. The growth inhibition by these organic acids was closely related with the inhibition of respiration, as tested using three species, C. gloeosporioides, C. coccodes, and C. dermatium. Optimum growth of C. gloeosporioides was observed around pH 6.0. The inhibition of growth by acetic acid accelerated along with a decrease in pH from 6.0 to 4.0, suggesting that the inhibition might be more enhanced by undissociated form of acetic acid. Despite of growth inhibition by acetic acid, the fungus was able to grow in a normal medium when acetic acid was eliminated, implying that the growth inhibition may be resulted from an acetic acid-mediated inhibition of respiration than a structural damage of cell. Catalase activity of the fungus increased in response to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, but addition of this together with 30 mM acetic acid brought about a decrease in the activity. The fungus which showed no grow at 30 mM acetic acid or 0.5% hydrogen peroxide began to grow after the elimination of these. But the fungus added simultaneously by these two compounds did not grow at all despite the elimination of these. Thus, controlling of Colletotrichum might be developed using acetic acid which is generally less dangerous than chemical reagents.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to determine the growth and survival characteristics for Arcobacter butzleri NCTC 12481. METHODS AND RESULTS The temperature and pH growth ranges were 15-39 degrees C and pH 6.0-8.0, as determined using impedance microbiology. The maximum specific growth rate was 00.57 h(-1) at 30 degrees C, pH 7.0. Arcobacter butzleri harvested from the exponential phase was more resistant to heat treatment than stationary phase cells (D55 1.1 and 0.4 min, respectively). Fluorescent dye uptake, and the release of UV-absorbing material, increased in heat-treated cells. After 21 d storage at 4 and -20 degrees C, A. butzleri was recovered on blood agar, but not on the isolation media CAT or CCDA. CONCLUSION Arcobacter butzleri cells from the exponential phase were less heat sensitive than those from the stationary phase. The organism was able to survive cold storage for at least 3 weeks. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The growth and survival characteristics have been quantified thus providing a greater understanding of this newly emerging pathogen.

Abstract
AIMS Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are now important nosocomial pathogens and are usually resistant to multiple antibiotics. Citrate is an alternative antimicrobial product which has been used as a preservative. METHODS AND RESULTS In this pilot study the bactericidal activity of Na citrate against 10 isolates of CNS and 6 other gram-positive pathogens was examined and compared with that of Na lactate. CONCLUSIONS All staphylococci tested were susceptible (> or = 2 log(10) killing) to citrate at 6.25-25 mg ml(-1). Na lactate showed only modest killing at 50 or 100 mg ml(-1). SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Citrate may warrant broader evaluation as an antimicrobial additive such as in topical agents.
