A new efficient method for calculation of Frenkel exciton parameters in molecular aggregates

Non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations provide new insights into the exciton transfer in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex

A trajectory surface hopping approach, which uses machine learning to speed up the most time-consuming steps, has been adopted to investigate the exciton transfer in light-harvesting systems. The present neural networks achieve high accuracy in predicting both Coulomb couplings and excitation energies. The latter are predicted taking into account the environment of the pigments. Direct simulation of exciton dynamics through light-harvesting complexes on significant time scales is usually challenging due to the coupled motion of nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom in these rather large systems containing several relatively large pigments. In the present approach, however, we are able to evaluate a statistically significant number of non-adiabatic molecular dynamics trajectories with respect to exciton delocalization and exciton paths. The formalism is applied to the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex of green sulfur bacteria, which transfers energy from the light-harvesting chlorosome to the reaction center with astonishing efficiency. The system has been studied experimentally and theoretically for decades. In total, we were able to simulate non-adiabatically more than 30 ns, sampling also the relevant space of parameters within their uncertainty. Our simulations show that the driving force supplied by the energy landscape resulting from electrostatic tuning is sufficient to funnel the energy towards site 3, from where it can be transferred to the reaction center. However, the high efficiency of transfer within a picosecond timescale can be attributed to the rather unusual properties of the BChl a molecules, resulting in very low inner and outer-sphere reorganization energies, not matched by any other organic molecule, e.g., used in organic electronics. A comparison with electron and exciton transfer in organic materials is particularly illuminating, suggesting a mechanism to explain the comparably high transfer efficiency.

Nonadiabatic Simulation of Exciton Dynamics in Organic Semiconductors Using Neural Network-Based Frenkel Hamiltonian and Gradients

In this study, we present a multiscale method to simulate the propagation of Frenkel singlet excitons in organic semiconductors (OSCs). The approach uses neural network models to train a Frenkel-type Hamiltonian and its gradient, obtained by the long-range correction version of density functional tight-binding with self-consistent charges. Our models accurately predict site energies, excitonic couplings, and corresponding gradients, essential for the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. Combined with the fewest switches surface hopping algorithm, the method was applied to four representative OSCs: anthracene, pentacene, perylenediimide, and diindenoperylene. The simulated exciton diffusion constants align well with experimental and reported theoretical values and offer valuable insights into exciton dynamics in OSCs.

The OpenMolcas Web: A Community-Driven Approach to Advancing Computational Chemistry

The developments of the open-source OpenMolcas chemistry software environment since spring 2020 are described, with a focus on novel functionalities accessible in the stable branch of the package or via interfaces with other packages. These developments span a wide range of topics in computational chemistry and are presented in thematic sections: electronic structure theory, electronic spectroscopy simulations, analytic gradients and molecular structure optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, and other new features. This report offers an overview of the chemical phenomena and processes OpenMolcas can address, while showing that OpenMolcas is an attractive platform for state-of-the-art atomistic computer simulations.

A Multiconfigurational Wave Function Implementation of the Frenkel Exciton Model for Molecular Aggregates

We present an implementation of the Frenkel exciton model into the OpenMolcas program package enabling calculations of collective electronic excited states of molecular aggregates based on a multiconfigurational wave function description of the individual monomers. The computational protocol avoids using diabatization schemes and, thus, supermolecule calculations. Additionally, the use of the Cholesky decomposition of the two-electron integrals entering pair interactions enhances the efficiency of the computational scheme. The application of the method is exemplified for two test systems, that is, a formaldehyde oxime and a bacteriochlorophyll-like dimer. For the sake of comparison with the dipole approximation, we restrict our considerations to situations where intermonomer exchange can be neglected. The protocol is expected to be beneficial for aggregates composed of molecules with extended π systems, unpaired electrons such as radicals or transition metal centers, where it should outperform widely used methods based on time-dependent density functional theory.

Toward efficient photochemistry from upper excited electronic states: Detection of long S2 lifetime of perylene

A long 0.9 ps lifetime of the upper excited singlet state in perylene is resolved by femtosecond pump-probe measurements under ultraviolet (4.96 eV) excitation and further validated by theoretical simulations of transient absorption kinetics. This finding prompts exploration and development of novel perylene-based materials for upper excited state photochemistry applications.

Geometry dependence of excitonic couplings and the consequences for configuration-space sampling

Excitonic coupling plays a key role for the understanding of excitonic energy transport (EET) in, for example, organic photovoltaics. However, the calculation of realistic systems is often beyond the applicability range of accurate wavefunction methods so that lower-scaling semi-empirical methods are used to model EET events. In the present work, the distance and angle dependence of excitonic couplings of dimers of selected organic molecules are evaluated for the semi-empirical long-range corrected density functional based tight binding (LC-DFTB) method and spin opposite scaled second order approximate coupled cluster singles and doubles (SOS-CC2). While semi-empirically scaled methods can lead to slightly increased deviations for excitation energies, the excitonic couplings and their dependence on the dimer geometry are reproduced. LC-DFTB yields a similar accuracy range as density-functional theory (DFT) employing the ωB97X functional while the computation time is reduced by several orders of magnitude. The dependence of the exchange contributions to the excitonic couplings on the dimer geometry is analyzed assessing the calculation of Coulombic excitonic couplings from monomer local excited states only, which reduces the computational effort significantly. The present work is a necessary first step toward the simulation of excitonic energy transport using semi-empirical methods.

Bright Frenkel Excitons in Molecular Crystals: A Survey

We computed the optical properties of a large set of molecular crystals (∼2200 structures) composed of molecules whose lowest excited states are strongly coupled and generate wide excitonic bands. Such bands are classified in terms of their dimensionality (1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional), the position of the optically allowed state in relation with the excitonic density of states, and the presence of Davydov splitting. The survey confirms that one-dimensional aggregates are rare in molecular crystals highlighting the need to go beyond the simple low-dimensional models. Furthermore, this large set of data is used to search for technologically interesting and less common properties. For instance, we considered the largest excitonic bandwidth that is achievable within known molecular crystals and identified materials with strong super-radiant states. Finally, we explored the possibility that strong excitonic coupling can be used to generate emissive states in the near-infrared region in materials formed by molecules with bright visible absorption and we could identify the maximum allowable red shift in this material class. These insights with the associated searchable database provide practical guidelines for designing materials with interesting optical properties.

Exciton transfer free energy from Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics

A computational approach is presented which allows the calculation of free energies profiles for exciton transfer processes within the framework of ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, sampling both the electronic and the nuclear degrees of freedom. To achieve this, restraining potentials are imposed on the centres of maximally localized Wannier orbitals. The resulting quantum-mechanical orbital forces are derived analytically and implemented in an AIMD program. In analogy to classical umbrella sampling techniques, these restraints are used to control an exciton transfer by incrementally moving the Wannier centres corresponding to the electron-hole pair along a suitable reaction coordinate. The new method is applied to study exciton transfer between two stacked penta(3-methylthiophene) molecules as a function of intermolecular distance. From the resulting free energy profiles, exciton transfer rates and diffusion constants are estimated, which prove to be in line with experimental results.

Density-functional tight-binding: basic concepts and applications to molecules and clusters

The scope of this article is to present an overview of the Density Functional based Tight Binding (DFTB) method and its applications. The paper introduces the basics of DFTB and its standard formulation up to second order. It also addresses methodological developments such as third order expansion, inclusion of non-covalent interactions, schemes to solve the self-interaction error, implementation of long-range short-range separation, treatment of excited states via the time-dependent DFTB scheme, inclusion of DFTB in hybrid high-level/low level schemes (DFT/DFTB or DFTB/MM), fragment decomposition of large systems, large scale potential energy landscape exploration with molecular dynamics in ground or excited states, non-adiabatic dynamics. A number of applications are reviewed, focusing on -(i)- the variety of systems that have been studied such as small molecules, large molecules and biomolecules, bare orfunctionalized clusters, supported or embedded systems, and -(ii)- properties and processes, such as vibrational spectroscopy, collisions, fragmentation, thermodynamics or non-adiabatic dynamics. Finally outlines and perspectives are given.

Benchmark and performance of long-range corrected time-dependent density functional tight binding (LC-TD-DFTB) on rhodopsins and light-harvesting complexes

The chromophores of rhodopsins (Rh) and light-harvesting (LH) complexes still represent a major challenge for a quantum chemical description due to their size and complex electronic structure. Since gradient corrected and hybrid density functional approaches have been shown to fail for these systems, only range-separated functionals seem to be a promising alternative to the more time consuming post-Hartree-Fock approaches. For extended sampling of optical properties, however, even more approximate approaches are required. Recently, a long-range corrected (LC) functional has been implemented into the efficient density functional tight binding (DFTB) method, allowing to sample the excited states properties of chromophores embedded into proteins using quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) with the time-dependent (TD) DFTB approach. In the present study, we assess the accuracy of LC-TD-DFT and LC-TD-DFTB for rhodopsins (bacteriorhodopsin (bR) and pharaonis phoborhodopsin (ppR)) and LH complexes (light-harvesting complex II (LH2) and Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex). This benchmark study shows the improved description of the color tuning parameters compared to standard DFT functionals. In general, LC-TD-DFTB can exhibit a similar performance as the corresponding LC functionals, allowing a reliable description of excited states properties at significantly reduced cost. The two chromophores investigated here pose complementary challenges: while huge sensitivity to external field perturbation (color tuning) and charge transfer excitations are characteristic for the retinal chromophore, the multi-chromophoric character of the LH complexes emphasizes a correct description of inter-chromophore couplings, giving less importance to color tuning. None of the investigated functionals masters both systems simultaneously with satisfactory accuracy. LC-TD-DFTB, at the current stage, although showing a systematic improvement compared to TD-DFTB cannot be recommended for studying color tuning in retinal proteins, similar to some of the LC-DFT functionals, because the response to external fields is still too weak. For sampling of LH-spectra, however, LC-TD-DFTB is a viable tool, allowing to efficiently sample absorption energies, as shown for three different LH complexes. As the calculations indicate, geometry optimization may overestimate the importance of local minima, which may be averaged over when using trajectories. Fast quantum chemical approaches therefore may allow for a direct sampling of spectra in the near future.

All-DFTB Approach to the Parametrization of the System-Bath Hamiltonian Describing Exciton-Vibrational Dynamics of Molecular Assemblies

Spectral density functions are central to the simulation of complex many body systems. Their determination requires making approximations not only to the dynamics but also to the underlying electronic structure theory. Here, blending different methods bears the danger of an inconsistent description. To solve this issue we propose an all-DFTB approach to determine spectral densities for the description of Frenkel excitons in molecular assemblies. The protocol is illustrated for a model of a PTCDI crystal, which involves the calculation of monomeric excitation energies and Coulomb couplings between monomer transitions, as well as their spectral distributions due to thermal fluctuations of the nuclei. Using dynamically defined normal modes, a mapping onto the standard harmonic oscillator spectral densities is achieved.

Exciton Coupling of Merocyanine Dyes from H- to J-type in the Solid State by Crystal Engineering

A key issue for the application of π-conjugated organic molecules as thin film solid-state materials is the packing structure, which drastically affects optical and electronic properties due to intermolecular coupling. In this regard, merocyanine dyes usually pack in H-coupled antiparallel arrangements while structures with more interesting J-type coupling have been rarely reported. Here we show that for three highly dipolar merocyanine dyes, which exhibit the same π-scaffold and accordingly equal properties as monomers in solution, the solid-state packing can be changed by a simple variation of aliphatic substituents to afford narrow and intense absorption bands with huge hypsochromic (H) or bathochromic (J) shifts for their thin films and nanocrystals. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations show that the energetic offset of almost 1 eV magnitude results from distinct packing motifs within the crystal structures that comply with the archetype H- or J-aggregate structures as described by Kasha's exciton theory.

Biphasic aggregation of a perylene bisimide dye identified by exciton-vibrational spectra

The quantum efficiency of light emission supramolecular aggregates strongly depends on the intermolecular coupling. We present a molecule which demonstrates two different aggregated structures with high and low quantum efficiency. The spectral signatures can be understood by simulating the aggregated structures and the corresponding exciton-vibrational spectra.
