Solvent Exchange Dynamics in M2(dobdc): An Interplay among Binding Strength, Exchange Kinetics, and Cooperativity

Solvent exchange is a crucial step in ensuring the complete activation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs); however, the conditions for solvent exchange vary among MOFs, even within the isostructural variants. This study examines the factors contributing to solvent exchange by investigating the isostructural M2(dobdc) (M═Mg, Co, Zn) series. Common solvents N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), ethanol (EtOH), and methanol (MeOH) are employed to assess the solvent exchange at coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) of M2(dobdc). By monitoring both solvents released from the MOF during solvent exchange and the coordination environment of metals within the MOF, a picture is constructed of exchange rates during early stages of solvent exchange as well as expulsion of the last traces of bound solvents. This differentiation is achieved by a combination of bulk monitoring of solvent phase composition and microscopic application of Raman spectroscopy on the single-crystal level. The kinetics of solvent replacement is revealed to have a substantial contribution from cooperativity; this phenomenon is observed in both the forward and reverse directions. Thermogravimetric analysis coupled with IR spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to elucidate the relationship between solvent exchange rates and solvent binding energy. The solvent exchange rates are determined by the kinetic barriers of solvent exchange that do not follow the order of the solvent binding affinity. This work contributes to understanding the solvent exchange of MOFs by examining the interplay among the binding strength, exchange kinetics, and cooperativity. It further provides valuable insights for scrutinizing MOF activation protocols.

Unlocking Diabetic Acetone Vapor Detection by A Portable Metal-Organic Framework-Based Turn-On Optical Sensor Device

Despite exhaled human breath having enabled noninvasive diabetes diagnosis, selective acetone vapor detection by fluorescence approach in the diabetic range (1.8-3.5 ppm) remains a long-standing challenge. A set of water-resistant luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF)-based composites have been reported for detecting acetone vapor in the diabetic range with a limit of detection of 200 ppb. The luminescent materials possess the ability to selectively detect acetone vapor from a mixture comprising nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and alcohol vapor, which are prevalent in exhaled breath. It is noteworthy that this is the first luminescent MOF material capable of selectively detecting acetone vapor in the diabetic range via a turn-on mechanism. The material can be reused within a matter of minutes under ambient conditions. Industrially pertinent electrospun luminescent fibers are likewise fabricated alongside various luminescent films for selective detection of ultratrace quantities of acetone vapor present in the air. Ab initio theoretical calculations combined with in situ synchrotron-based dosing studies uncovered the material's remarkable hypersensitivity toward acetone vapor. Finally, a freshly designed prototype fluorescence-based portable optical sensor is utilized as a proof-of-concept for the rapid detection of acetone vapor within the diabetic range.

Interrelations between Linkage Isomers of an Efficient Square-planar Nickel(II) Nitrite Photoswitch in the Solid State

An efficient nitrite nickel(II) photoswitch, with the 1-phenyl-2-hydroxyimino-3-[(2'-dimethylamino)ethyl]imino-1-propanone moiety used as the ancillary ligand, is reported. In the ground-state ('dark') crystal structure, the studied compound exists predominantly as the nitro-(η1 -N(O)2 ) isomer, however, traces of the exo- and endo-nitrito-(η1 -ONO) forms are detected both at 100 K (4-5 % each) and under ambient conditions (~9 % each). When excited with the 405-530 nm LED light, the nitro-to-nitrito isomerization takes place. The total conversion exceeds 90 %. The exo-nitrito linkage isomer constitutes the dominant photo-generated form, whereas the relative population of both nitrito species depends on temperature. The reaction is fully reversible and reproducible. The photo-products are stable up to 200 K. The system constitutes a good model case for the reaction mechanism studies. Thus, experimental and theoretical investigations on the photo-isomerism were conducted and are presented in detail. Eventually, the nitro→exo-nitrito→endo-nitrito reaction pathway is proposed.

Frontiers of molecular crystal structure prediction for pharmaceuticals and functional organic materials

The reliability of organic molecular crystal structure prediction has improved tremendously in recent years. Crystal structure predictions for small, mostly rigid molecules are quickly becoming routine. Structure predictions for larger, highly flexible molecules are more challenging, but their crystal structures can also now be predicted with increasing rates of success. These advances are ushering in a new era where crystal structure prediction drives the experimental discovery of new solid forms. After briefly discussing the computational methods that enable successful crystal structure prediction, this perspective presents case studies from the literature that demonstrate how state-of-the-art crystal structure prediction can transform how scientists approach problems involving the organic solid state. Applications to pharmaceuticals, porous organic materials, photomechanical crystals, organic semi-conductors, and nuclear magnetic resonance crystallography are included. Finally, efforts to improve our understanding of which predicted crystal structures can actually be produced experimentally and other outstanding challenges are discussed.

CRYSTAL23: A Program for Computational Solid State Physics and Chemistry

The Crystal program for quantum-mechanical simulations of materials has been bridging the realm of molecular quantum chemistry to the realm of solid state physics for many years, since its first public version released back in 1988. This peculiarity stems from the use of atom-centered basis functions within a linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) approach and from the corresponding efficiency in the evaluation of the exact Fock exchange series. In particular, this has led to the implementation of a rich variety of hybrid density functional approximations since 1998. Nowadays, it is acknowledged by a broad community of solid state chemists and physicists that the inclusion of a fraction of Fock exchange in the exchange-correlation potential of the density functional theory is key to a better description of many properties of materials (electronic, magnetic, mechanical, spintronic, lattice-dynamical, etc.). Here, the main developments made to the program in the last five years (i.e., since the previous release, Crystal17) are presented and some of their most noteworthy applications reviewed.

Efficiently predicting directional carrier mobilities in organic materials with the Boltzmann transport equation

Describing charge carrier anisotropy in crystalline organic semiconductors with ab initio methods is challenging because of the weak intermolecular interactions that lead to both localized and delocalized charge transport mechanisms. Small polaron hopping models (localized) are generally used to describe materials with small charge carrier mobilities, while periodic band models (delocalized) are used to describe materials with high charge carrier mobilities. Here, we prove the advantage of applying the constant relaxation time approximation of the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) to efficiently predict the anisotropic hole mobilities of several unsubstituted (anthracene, tetracene, pentacene, and hexacene) and substituted (2,6-diphenylanthracene, rubrene, and TIPS-pentacene) high-mobility n-acene single crystals. Several density functionals are used to optimize the crystals, and the composite density functional PBEsol0-3c/sol-def2-mSVP predicts the most experimentally similar geometries, adequate indirect bandgaps, and the theoretically consistent n-acene charge transport mobility trend. Similarities between BTE and Marcus mobilities are presented for each crystal. BTE and Marcus charge carrier mobilities computed at the same geometry result in similar mobility trends, differing mostly in materials with more substitutions or structurally complex substituents. By using a reduced number of calculations, BTE is able to predict anisotropic carrier mobilities efficiently and effectively for a range of high-mobility organic semiconductors.

Defect Engineering in Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals: Implications for Mechanical Properties and Performance

The growth process of metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocrystals defines their properties and functions. However, defects may be prevalent during the crystallization of even seemingly perfect MOFs, such as zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), and yet direct probing of such structural defects has been challenging because of the lack of nanoscale techniques to locally examine individual nanocrystals. Here, we directly study local defects, such as missing linkers or metal vacancies, in ZIF-8 nano- and microcrystals with near-field IR nanospectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations. We track the chemical changes during crystallization and show that structural defects like zinc cations that are bound to molecules of the reactant gradually disappear with ripening of the crystals, while dangling and missing linker defects prevail. The resulting defect-terminating groups or open-metal sites produce mechanical anisotropy and reduce the Young's modulus, as measured via tip force microscopy with nanoscale resolution and supported by theoretical modeling. However, these structural defects also open the door for defect engineering to tune the performance of ZIF-8 by offering additional adsorption sites for targeted catalytic reactions, chemical sensing, or gas capture.

Confinement of Luminescent Guests in Metal–Organic Frameworks: Understanding Pathways from Synthesis and Multimodal Characterization to Potential Applications of LG@MOF Systems

This review gives an authoritative, critical, and accessible overview of an emergent class of fluorescent materials termed “LG@MOF”, engineered from the nanoscale confinement of luminescent guests (LG) in a metal–organic framework (MOF) host, realizing a myriad of unconventional materials with fascinating photophysical and photochemical properties. We begin by summarizing the synthetic methodologies and design guidelines for representative LG@MOF systems, where the major types of fluorescent guest encompass organic dyes, metal ions, metal complexes, metal nanoclusters, quantum dots, and hybrid perovskites. Subsequently, we discuss the methods for characterizing the resultant guest–host structures, guest loading, photophysical properties, and review local-scale techniques recently employed to elucidate guest positions. A special emphasis is paid to the pros and cons of the various methods in the context of LG@MOF. In the following section, we provide a brief tutorial on the basic guest–host phenomena, focusing on the excited state events and nanoscale confinement effects underpinning the exceptional behavior of LG@MOF systems. The review finally culminates in the most striking applications of LG@MOF materials, particularly the “turn-on” type fluorochromic chemo- and mechano-sensors, noninvasive thermometry and optical pH sensors, electroluminescence, and innovative security devices. This review offers a comprehensive coverage of general interest to the multidisciplinary materials community to stimulate frontier research in the vibrant sector of light-emitting MOF composite systems.

Assessing the Applicability of the Geometric Counterpoise Correction in B2PLYP/Double-ζ Calculations for Thermochemistry, Kinetics, and Noncovalent Interactions

We present a proof-of-concept study of the suitability of Kruse and Grimme’s geometric counterpoise correction (gCP) for basis set superposition errors (BSSEs) in double-hybrid density functional calculations with a double-ζ basis set. The gCP approach only requires geometrical information as an input and no orbital/density information is needed. Therefore, this correction is practically free of any additional cost. gCP is trained against the Boys and Bernardi counterpoise correction across a set of 528 noncovalently bound dimers. We investigate the suitability of the approach for the B2PLYP/def2-SVP level of theory, and reveal error compensation effects—missing London dispersion and the BSSE—associated with B2PLYP/def2-SVP calculations, and present B2PLYP-gCP-D3(BJ)/def2-SVP with the reparametrised DFT-D3(BJ) and gCP corrections as a more balanced alternative. Benchmarking results on the S66x8 benchmark set for noncovalent interactions and the GMTKN55 database for main-group thermochemistry, kinetics, and noncovalent interactions show a statistical improvement of the B2PLYP-gCP-D3(BJ) scheme over plain B2PLYP and B2PLYP-D3(BJ). B2PLYP-D3(BJ) shows significant overestimation of interaction energies, barrier heights with larger deviations from the reference values, and wrong relative stabilities in conformers, all of which can be associated with BSSE. We find that the gCP-corrected method represents a significant improvement over B2PLYP-D3(BJ), particularly for intramolecular noncovalent interactions. These findings encourage future developments of efficient double-hybrid DFT strategies that can be applied when double-hybrid calculations with large basis sets are not feasible due to system size.

Liquid water contains the building blocks of diverse ice phases

Water molecules can arrange into a liquid with complex hydrogen-bond networks and at least 17 experimentally confirmed ice phases with enormous structural diversity. It remains a puzzle how or whether this multitude of arrangements in different phases of water are related. Here we investigate the structural similarities between liquid water and a comprehensive set of 54 ice phases in simulations, by directly comparing their local environments using general atomic descriptors, and also by demonstrating that a machine-learning potential trained on liquid water alone can predict the densities, lattice energies, and vibrational properties of the ices. The finding that the local environments characterising the different ice phases are found in water sheds light on the phase behavior of water, and rationalizes the transferability of water models between different phases.

Molecular understanding of water is challenging due to the structural complexity of liquid water and the large number of ice phases. Here the authors use a machine-learning potential trained on liquid water to demonstrate the structural similarity of liquid water and that of 54 real and hypothetical ice phases.

Exfoliation Energy of Layered Materials by DFT-D: Beware of Dispersion!

In this work, we have computed the exfoliation energy (the energy required to separate a single layer from the bulk structure), the interlayer distance, and the thermodynamic state functions for representative layered inorganic minerals such as Brucite, Portlandite, and Kaolinite, while leaving the more classical 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides (like MoS₂) for future work. Such materials are interesting for several applications in the field of adsorption and in prebiotic chemistry. Their peculiar features are directly controlled by the exfoliation energy. In materials without cations/anions linking different layers, the interactions keeping the layers together are of weak nature, mainly dispersion London interactions and hydrogen bonds, somehow challenging to deal with computationally. We used Hartree-Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT) approaches focusing on the role of dispersion forces using the popular and widespread Grimme's pairwise dispersion schemes (-D2 and -D3) and, as a reference method, the periodic MP2 approach based on localized orbitals (LMP2). The results are highly dependent on the choice of the scheme adopted to account for dispersion interactions. D2 and D3 schemes combined with either HF or DFT lead to overestimated exfoliation energies (about 2.5 and 1.7 times higher than LMP2 data for Brucite/Portlandite and Kaolinite) and underestimated interlayer distances (by about 3.5% for Brucite/Portlandite). The reason is that D2 and D3 corrections are based on neutral atomic parameters for each chemical element which, instead, behave as cations in the considered layered material (Mg, Ca, and Al), causing overattractive interaction between layers. More sophisticated dispersion corrections methods, like those based on nonlocal vdW functionals, many body dispersion model, and exchange-hole dipole moment not relying on atom-typing, are, in principle, better suited to describe the London interaction of ionic species. Nonetheless, we demonstrate that good results can be achieved also within the simpler D2 and D3 schemes, in agreement with previous literature suggestions, by adopting the dispersion coefficients of the preceding noble gas for the ionic species, leading to energetics in good agreement with LMP2 and structures closer to the experiments.

The CRYSTAL code, 1976-2020 and beyond, a long story

CRYSTAL is a periodic ab initio code that uses a Gaussian-type basis set to express crystalline orbitals (i.e., Bloch functions). The use of atom-centered basis functions allows treating 3D (crystals), 2D (slabs), 1D (polymers), and 0D (molecules) systems on the same grounds. In turn, all-electron calculations are inherently permitted along with pseudopotential strategies. A variety of density functionals are implemented, including global and range-separated hybrids of various natures and, as an extreme case, Hartree-Fock (HF). The cost for HF or hybrids is only about 3-5 times higher than when using the local density approximation or the generalized gradient approximation. Symmetry is fully exploited at all steps of the calculation. Many tools are available to modify the structure as given in input and simplify the construction of complicated objects, such as slabs, nanotubes, molecules, and clusters. Many tensorial properties can be evaluated by using a single input keyword: elastic, piezoelectric, photoelastic, dielectric, first and second hyperpolarizabilities, etc. The calculation of infrared and Raman spectra is available, and the intensities are computed analytically. Automated tools are available for the generation of the relevant configurations of solid solutions and/or disordered systems. Three versions of the code exist: serial, parallel, and massive-parallel. In the second one, the most relevant matrices are duplicated on each core, whereas in the third one, the Fock matrix is distributed for diagonalization. All the relevant vectors are dynamically allocated and deallocated after use, making the code very agile. CRYSTAL can be used efficiently on high performance computing machines up to thousands of cores.

Elucidating the Drug Release from Metal-Organic Framework Nanocomposites via In Situ Synchrotron Microspectroscopy and Theoretical Modeling

Nanocomposites comprising metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) embedded in a polymeric matrix are promising carriers for drug delivery applications. While understanding the chemical and physical transformations of MOFs during the release of confined drug molecules is challenging, this is central to devising better ways for controlled release of therapeutic agents. Herein, we demonstrate the efficacy of synchrotron microspectroscopy to track the in situ release of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) anticancer drug molecules from a drug@MOF/polymer composite (5-FU@HKUST-1/polyurethane). Using experimental time-resolved infrared spectra jointly with newly developed density functional theory calculations, we reveal the detailed dynamics of vibrational motions underpinning the dissociation of 5-FU bound to the framework of HKUST-1 upon water exposure. We discover that HKUST-1 creates hydrophilic channels within the hydrophobic polyurethane matrix hence helping to tune drug release rate. The synergy between a hydrophilic MOF with a hydrophobic polymer can be harnessed to engineer a tunable nanocomposite that alleviates the unwanted burst effect commonly encountered in drug delivery.
