Insights into structure-property relationships in ionic liquids using cyclic perfluoroalkylsulfonylimides

Room temperature ionic liquids of cyclic sulfonimide anions ncPFSI (ring size: n = 4-6) with the cations [EMIm]⁺ (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium), [BMIm]⁺ (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) and [BMPL]⁺ (BMPL = 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium) have been synthesized. Their solid-state structures have been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their physicochemical properties (thermal behaviour and stability, dynamic viscosity and specific conductivity) have been assessed. In addition, the ion diffusion was studied by pulsed field gradient stimulated echo (PFGSTE) NMR spectroscopy. The decisive influence of the ring size of the cyclic sulfonimide anions on the physicochemical properties of the ILs has been revealed. All ILs show different properties compared to those of the non-cyclic TFSI anion. While these differences are especially distinct for ILs with the very rigid 6cPFSI anion, the 5-membered ring anion 5cPFSI was found to result in ILs with relatively similar properties. The difference between the properties of the TFSI anion and the cyclic sulfonimide anions has been rationalized by the rigidity (conformational lock) of the cyclic sulfonimide anions. The comparison of selected IL properties was augmented by MD simulations. These highlight the importance of π⁺-π⁺ interactions between pairs of [EMIm]⁺ cations in the liquid phase. The π⁺-π⁺ interactions are evident for the solid state from the molecular structures of the [EMIm]⁺-ILs with the three cyclic imide anions determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Cyano(fluoro)borate and cyano(hydrido)borate ionic liquids: low-viscosity ionic media for electrochemical applications

The synthesis and detailed characterization of low-viscosity room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and [BnPh₃P]⁺ salts with the cyano(fluoro)borate anions [BF(CN)₃]^- (MFB), [BF₂(CN)₂]^- (DFB), and [BF₃(CN)]^- as well as the new mixed-substituted anion [BFH(CN)₂]^- (FHB) is described. The RTILs with [EMIm]⁺ or [BMPL]⁺ as countercations were obtained in yields of up to 98% from readily available alkali metal salts and in high purities that allow application in electrochemical devices. Trends in thermal stability, melting and freezing behavior, density, electrochemical stability, dynamic viscosity, specific conductivity and ion diffusivity have been assessed and compared to those of the related tetracyanoborate- and cyano(hydrido)borate-RTILs. The crystal structure analysis of the [BnPh₃P]⁺ salts of [BF_n(CN)_4-n]^- (n = 0-4), [BH_n(CN)_4-n]^- (n = 1-3) and [BFH(CN)₂]^- provided experimental access to anion volumina that together with ion molecular mass, electrostatic potential, shape and chemical stability have been correlated to physicochemical properties. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the [EMIm]⁺-ILs and potassium or sodium salts was studied.

Physico-Chemical Properties of Magnetic Dicationic Ionic Liquids with Tetrahaloferrate Anions

A series of imidazolium-based symmetrical and asymmetrical dicationic ionic liquids (DcILs) with alkyl spacers of different length and with [FeCl3 Br]- as counter ion have been synthesized. The synthesized DcILs are characterized by using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry, along with single-crystal XRD analysis. Physicochemical properties such as solubility, thermal stability and magnetic susceptibility are also measured. These compounds show low melting points, good solubility in water and organic solvents, thermal stability, and paramagnetism. The products of molar susceptibility and temperature (χmol ⋅T) for the synthesized DcILs have been found between 4.05 to 4.79 emu mol-1  K Oe-1 and effective magnetic moment values have also been determined to be compared to that expected from the spin-only approximation.

Multifunctional Characteristics of Carbon Fibers Modified with Imidazolium Ionic Liquids

A multifunctional designing approach is of great importance for advanced composite applications. This study assessed the use of ionic liquids (ILs) to modify the surface of carbon fiber (CF) and impart multifunctional characteristics to it. For that, ethanolic solutions of different ILs, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloride, at different concentrations, were used to treat the CF. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of IL on the CF surface. The contact angle for 1% w/v IL-treated CF and DGEBA epoxy decreased by up to 35%, corresponding to an increase in surface energy of fiber, accompanied by an increase of 91% in interfacial shear strength. These enhancements were achieved with the hydroxy-functionalized IL, showing the tunability of CF properties through the N-imidazolium substituent. An increase in crystallite size along the basal plane was also found due to the ordering of the graphitic structure on the surface. Moreover, there was a decrease in electrical resistivity of 77%. In all, the imidazolium ILs were considered a promising approach to induce multifunctional characteristics, namely enhanced interfacial strength and electrical conductivity, to unsized CF, which can also be beneficial for recycled fibers without deteriorating their inherent surface properties.

Halide-free Synthesis of New Difluoro(oxalate)borate [DFOB]--based Ionic Liquids and Organic Ionic Plastic Crystals

The implementation of next‐generation batteries requires the development of safe, compatible electrolytes that are stable and do not cause safety problems. The difluoro(oxalato)borate ([DFOB]⁻) anion has been used as an electrolyte additive to aid with stability, but such an approach has most commonly been carried out using flammable solvent electrolytes. As an alternative approach, utilisation of the [DFOB]⁻ anion to make ionic liquids (ILs) or Organic Ionic Plastic Crystals (OIPCs) allows the advantageous properties of ILs or OIPCs, such as higher thermal stability and non‐volatility, combined with the benefits of the [DFOB]⁻ anion. Here, we report the synthesis of new [DFOB]⁻‐based ILs paired with triethylmethylphosphonium [P₁₂₂₂]⁺, and diethylisobutylmethylphosphonium [P_122i4]⁺. We also report the first OIPCs containing the [DFOB]⁻ anion, formed by combination with the 1‐ethyl‐1‐methylpyrrolidinium [C₂mpyr]⁺ cation, and the triethylmethylammonium [N₁₂₂₂]⁺ cation. The traditional synthetic route using halide starting materials has been successfully replaced by a halide‐free tosylate‐based synthetic route that is advantageous for a purer, halide free product. The synthesised [DFOB]⁻‐based salts exhibit good thermal stability, while the ILs display relatively high ionic conductivity. Thus, the new [DFOB]⁻‐based electrolytes show promise for further investigation as battery electrolytes both in liquid and solid‐state form.

Protein aggregation and crystallization with ionic liquids: Insights into the influence of solvent properties

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been used in solvents for proteins in many applications, including biotechnology, pharmaceutics, and medicine due to their tunable physicochemical and biological properties. Protein aggregation is often undesirable, and predominantly occurs during bioprocesses, while the aggregation process can be reversible or irreversible and the aggregates formed can be native/non-native and soluble/insoluble. Recent studies have clearly identified key properties of ILs and IL-water mixtures related to protein performance, suggesting the use of the tailorable properties of ILs to inhibit protein aggregation, to promote protein crystallization, and to control protein aggregation pathways. This review discusses the critical properties of IL and IL-water mixtures and presents the latest understanding of the protein aggregation pathways and the development of IL systems that affect or control the protein aggregation process. Through this feature article, we hope to inspire further advances in understanding and new approaches to controlling protein behavior to optimize bioprocesses.

Charge transfer and polarisability in ionic liquids: a case study

The practical use of ionic liquids (ILs) is benefiting from a growing understanding of the underpinning structural and dynamic properties, facilitated through classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The predictive and explanatory power of a classical MD simulation is inextricably linked to the underlying force field. A key aspect of the forcefield for ILs is the ability to recover charge based interactions. Our focus in this paper is on the description and recovery of charge transfer and polarisability effects, demonstrated through MD simulations of the widely used 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [C₄C₁im][NTf₂] IL. We study the charge distributions generated by a range of ab initio methods, and present an interpolation method for determining atom-wise scaled partial charges. Two novel methods for determining the mean field (total) charge transfer from anion to cation are presented. The impact of using different charge models and different partial charge scaling (unscaled, uniformly scaled, atom-wise scaled) are compared to fully polarisable simulations. We study a range of Drude particle explicitly polarisable potentials and shed light on the performance of current approaches to counter known problems. It is demonstrated that small changes in the charge description and MD methodology can have a significant impact; biasing some properties, while leaving others unaffected within the structural and dynamic domains.

Full Kinetics and Mechanism Investigation for Generating 4-Substituted 1, 4- Dihydropyridine Derivatives in the Presence of Green Catalyst and Aqueous Medium: Experimental Procedure

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

The main objective of the kinetic investigation of the reaction between ethyl acetoacetate 1, ammoniumacetat 2, dimedone 3, and diverse substitutions of benzaldehyde 4-X, (X= H, NO₂, CN, CF₃, Cl, CH (CH₃)₂, CH₃, OCH₃, OCH₃, and OH) for generating 4-substituted 1, 4-dihydropyridine derivatives (product 5) was to recognize the most realistic reaction mechanism. The layout of the reaction mechanism was studied kinetically via a UV-visible spectrophotometry approach.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Among the various mechanisms, only mechanism1 (path1) involving 12 steps was recognized as a dominant mechanism (path₁). Herein, the reactions between 1 and 2 (k_obs= 814.04 M^-1.min^-1) and also between 3 and 4-H (k_obs= 151.18 M^-1.min^-1) can be accepted as the first and second steps (step₁ and step₂) of the reaction mechanism, respectively. Amongst all steps, only step9 of the dominant mechanism (path₁) comprised substituent groups (X) near the reaction center.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Para electron-withdrawing or donating groups on the compound 4-X increased the rate of the reaction 4 times more or decreased 8.7 times less than the benzaldehyde alone. So, this step is sensitive for monitoring any small or huge changes in the reaction rate. Accordingly, step9 is the rate-determining step of the reaction mechanism (path₁).

CONCLUSION

The recent result is in agreement with the Hammett description of an excellent dual substituent factor (r = 0.990) and positive value of reaction constant (ρ= +0.9502), which confirms that both the resonance and inductive effects "altogether" contribute to the reaction center of step9 in the dominant mechanism (path₁).

Tri-tert-butyl(n-alkyl)phosphonium Ionic Liquids: Structure, Properties and Application as Hybrid Catalyst Nanomaterials

A series of sterically hindered tri-tert-butyl(n-alkyl)phosphonium salts (n-CnH2n+1 with n = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17) was synthesized and systematically studied by 1H, 13C, 31P NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and melting point measurement. Formation and stabilization palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) were used to characterize the phosphonium ionic liquid (PIL) nanoscale interaction ability. The colloidal Pd in the PIL systems was described with TEM and DLS analyses and applied in the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The PILs were proven to be suitable stabilizers of PdNPs possessing high catalytic activity. The tri-tert-butyl(n-alkyl)phosphonium salts showed a complex nonlinear correlation of the structure–property relationship. The synthesized family of PILs has a broad variety of structural features, including hydrophobic and hydrophilic structures that are entirely expressed in the diversity of their properties

Spectroscopic and Computational Study of Boronium Ionic Liquids and Electrolytes

Boronium cation-based ionic liquids (ILs) have demonstrated high thermal stability and a >5.8 V electrochemical stability window. Additionally, IL-based electrolytes containing the salt LiTFSI have shown stable cycling against the Li metal anode, the "Holy grail" of rechargeable lithium batteries. However, the basic spectroscopic characterisation needed for further development and effective application is missing for these promising ILs and electrolytes. In this work, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used in combination to characterise four ILs and electrolytes based on the [NNBH₂ ]⁺ and [(TMEDA)BH₂ ]⁺ boronium cations and the [FSI]^- and [TFSI]^- anions. By using this combined experimental and computational approach, proper understanding of the role of different ion-ion interactions for the Li cation coordination environment in the electrolytes was achieved. Furthermore, the calculated vibrational frequencies assisted in the proper mode assignments for the ILs and in providing insights into the spectroscopic features expected at the interface created when they are adsorbed on a Li(001) surface. A reproducible synthesis procedure for [(TMEDA)BH₂ ]⁺ is also reported. The fundamental findings presented in this work are beneficial for any future studies that utilise IL based electrolytes in next generation Li metal batteries.

Influence of Alkyl Chain Length on Thermal Properties, Structure, and Self-Diffusion Coefficients of Alkyltriethylammonium-Based Ionic Liquids

The application of ionic liquids (ILs) has grown enormously, from their use as simple solvents, catalysts, media in separation science, or electrolytes to that as task-specific, tunable molecular machines with appropriate properties. A thorough understanding of these properties and structure–property relationships is needed to fully exploit their potential, open new directions in IL-based research and, finally, properly implement the appropriate applications. In this work, we investigated the structure–properties relationships of a series of alkyltriethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [TEA-R][TFSI] ionic liquids in relation to their thermal behavior, structure organization, and self-diffusion coefficients in the bulk state using DSC, FT-IR, SAXS, and NMR diffusometry techniques. The phase transition temperatures were determined, indicating alkyl chain dependency. Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy studies revealed the structuration of the ionic liquids along with alkyl chain elongation. SAXS experiments clearly demonstrated the existence of polar/non-polar domains. The alkyl chain length influenced the expansion of the non-polar domains, leading to the expansion between cation heads in polar regions of the structured IL. ¹H NMR self-diffusion coefficients indicated that alkyl chain elongation generally caused the lowering of the self-diffusion coefficients. Moreover, we show that the diffusion of anions and cations of ILs is similar, even though they vary in their size.

Targeted modifications in ionic liquids - from understanding to design

Ionic liquids are extremely versatile and continue to find new applications in academia as well as industry. This versatility is rooted in the manifold of possible ion types, ion combinations, and ion variations. However, to fully exploit this versatility, it is imperative to understand how the properties of ionic liquids arise from their constituents. In this work, we discuss targeted modifications as a powerful tool to provide understanding and to enable design. A 'targeted modification' is a deliberate change in the structure of an ionic liquid. This includes chemical changes in an experiment as well as changes to the parameterisation in a computer simulation. In any case, such a change must be purposeful to isolate what is of interest, studying, as far as is possible, only one concept at a time. The concepts can then be used as design elements. However, it is often found that several design elements interact with each other - sometimes synergistically, and other times antagonistically. Targeted modifications are a systematic way of navigating these overlaps. We hope this paper shows that understanding ionic liquids requires experimentalists and theoreticians to join forces and provides a tool to tackle the difficult transition from understanding to design.

1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Reactions of Nitrile Oxides under "Non-Conventional" Conditions: Green Solvents, Irradiation, and Continuous Flow

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions (DCs) of nitrile oxides (NOs) to alkenes and alkynes are useful methods for the synthesis of 2-isoxazolines and isoxazoles respectively, which are important classes of heterocyclic compounds in organic and medicinal chemistry. Most of these reactions are carried out in organic solvents and under thermal activation. Nevertheless the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂ ) and ionic liquids (Ils) as alternative solvents and the application of microwave (MW) and ultrasound (US) as alternative activation procedures have evident advantages from the "Green Chemistry" point of view. The critical discussion on the applications of these "unconventional" activation methods and reaction conditions in the 1,3-DCs of NOs is the objective of the present Review.

Alkoxycyanoborates: metal salts and low-viscosity ionic liquids

Alkoxycyanoborates including low-viscosity ionic liquids which are promising materials in particular for electrochemical applications and Li[CH3OB(CN)3], which is a potential conducting salt, are presented.

Industrial Applications of Ionic Liquids

Since their conception, ionic liquids (ILs) have been investigated for an extensive range of applications including in solvent chemistry, catalysis, and electrochemistry. This is due to their designation as designer solvents, whereby the physiochemical properties of an IL can be tuned for specific applications. This has led to significant research activity both by academia and industry from the 1990s, accelerating research in many fields and leading to the filing of numerous patents. However, while ILs have received great interest in the patent literature, only a limited number of processes are known to have been commercialised. This review aims to provide a perspective on the successful commercialisation of IL-based processes, to date, and the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of ILs in industry.

Tetraethylammonium Acetate and Tetraethylammonium Bromide-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents as Thermodynamic CO2 Gas Hydrate Inhibitors

The thermodynamic gas hydrate suppression behavior of four Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) was evaluated in this paper. The mixtures of Hydrogen Bond Acceptors (HBA), Tetraethylammonium Acetate (TEAAC), and Tetraethylammonium Bromide (TEAB) with Hydrogen Bond Donors (HBD), Mono-Ethylene Glycol (MEG), and Glycerol were used to make the DES. The DESs were made at a 1:7 molar ratio for the combinations of TEAAC:MEG, TEAAC:Glycerol, TEAB:MEG, and TEAB:Glycerol. The Hydrate Liquid-Vapor Equilibrium (HLVE) data for CO2 were evaluated through the T-cycle method at different temperature (273.15–283.15 K) and pressure (2–4 MPa) conditions in the presence and absence of 5 wt % aqueous DES solutions. The inhibition effects showed by the DESs, including average suppression temperature (ΔŦ) and gas hydrate dissociation enthalpies (ΔHdiss), were also calculated. The average suppression temperature values of the DESs ranged between 0.4 and 2.4, with the highest inhibition to lowest inhibition order being TEAB:Glycerol > TEAB:MEG > TEAAC:Glycerol > TEAAC:MEG. A comparison of the DES with conventional Thermodynamic Hydrate Inhibitors (THIs) showed that studied Deep Eutectic Solvents had better gas hydrate inhibition. The results proved that DES has the potential to be one of the promising alternatives in gas hydrate inhibition.

Deep Eutectic Solvent Reline at 2D Nanomaterial Interfaces

The behavior of reline (choline chloride mixed with urea at a 1-to-2 mole ratio) deep eutectic solvent at the interfaces of 2D nanomaterials was studied by using molecular simulation methods. Graphene, boron nitride, silicene, germanene, and molybdenum disulfide were studied for considering the most relevant features of available 2D nanomaterials. The reline-nanomaterial interactions were analyzed, and the mechanism of reline adsorption with the properties at the interfaces was studied. Likewise, the behavior of the deep eutectic solvent upon confinement between parallel nanosheets was considered as a model of properties when placed in slit nanopores. The results provide a nanoscopic vision of the adsorption and confinement of reline regarding 2D nanomaterials, thus advancing the development of new materials based on deep eutectics.

Ionic Liquid-Polymer Nanoparticle Hybrid Systems as New Tools to Deliver Poorly Soluble Drugs

The use of functional excipients such as ionic liquids (ILs) and the encapsulation of drugs into nanocarriers are useful strategies to overcome poor drug solubility. The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of IL-polymer nanoparticle hybrid systems as tools to deliver poorly soluble drugs. These systems were obtained using a methodology previously developed by our group and improved herein to produce IL-polymer nanoparticle hybrid systems. Two different choline-based ILs and poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) 50:50 or PLGA 75:25 were used to load rutin into the delivery system. The resulting rutin-loaded IL-polymer nanoparticle hybrid systems presented a diameter of 250-300 nm, with a low polydispersity index and a zeta potential of about -40 mV. The drug association efficiency ranged from 51% to 76%, which represents a good achievement considering the poor solubility of rutin. No significant particle aggregation was obtained upon freeze-drying. The presence of the IL in the nanosystem does not affect its sustained release properties, achieving about 85% of rutin released after 72 h. The cytotoxicity studies showed that the delivery system was not toxic to HaCat cells. Our findings may open a new paradigm on the therapy improvement of diseases treated with poorly soluble drugs.

Anomalous and Not-So-Common Behavior in Common Ionic Liquids and Ionic Liquid-Containing Systems

This work highlights unexpected, not so well known responses of ionic liquids and ionic liquid-containing systems, which are reported in a collective manner, as a short review. Examples include: (i) Minima in the temperature dependence of the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient of some ILs; (ii) Viscosity Minima in binary mixtures of IL + Molecular solvents; (iii) Anomalies in the surface tension within a family of ILs; (iv) The constancy among IL substitution of C_p/V_m at and around room temperature; (v) ILs as glass forming liquids; (vi) Alternate odd-even side alkyl chain length effects; (vii) Absolute negative pressures in ILs and IL-containing systems; (viii) Reversed-charged ionic liquid pairs; (ix) LCST immiscibility behavior in IL + solvent systems.

Equilibria and correlation of systems involving 1-hexyl-3-methylpyridinium trifluoromethanesulfonate

Ionic liquids are being proposed for the improvement of many refinery-related applications where water and oil coexist. However, the lack of relevant thermodynamic data on equilibrium processes involving water, oil and an ionic liquid is a stumbling block. Phase diagrams of these systems are complex, with many different regions, especially when the ionic liquid is solid at room conditions. This greatly complicates modelling, which is usually neglected or carried out only partially. In this work, for the first time, the simultaneous correlation not only of liquid–liquid and liquid–liquid–liquid but also solid–liquid equilibrium data for ternary systems involving ionic liquids has been carried out. To that end, the ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylpyridinium trifluoromethanesulfonate, with an alkyl chain length that favours nano-segregation, was selected. Phase diagrams with water and different representative oils (octane, toluene and cyclohexane) have been determined at various temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The great capacity of the NRTL model, a powerful tool used in all chemical process simulators, was shown by simultaneously correlating data from all the equilibrium regions. However, adequate equilibrium equations and pivotal strategies were required. Low deviations and a good representation of phase diagrams was achieved. A topological analysis based on the Gibbs common tangent criterion and a stability test allowed validation of the proposed correlation parameters.

The NRTL model is a useful tool to carry out the simultaneous correlation of all different equilibrium regions found in a phase diagram.
