Declining greenness in Arctic-boreal lakes

Analysis of taiga and tundra lake browning trends from 2002 to 2021 using MODIS data

Lakes in taiga and tundra regions may be silently undergoing changes due to global warming. One of those changes is browning in lake color. The browning interacts with the carbon cycle, ecosystem dynamics, and water quality in freshwater systems. However, spatiotemporal variabilities of browning in these regions have not been well documented. Using MODIS remote sensing reflectance at near ultraviolet wavelengths from 2002 to 2021 on the Google Earth Engine platform, we quantified long-term browning trends across 7616 lakes (larger than 10 km2) in taiga and tundra biomes. These lakes showed an overall decreased trend in browning (Theil-Sen Slope = 0.00015), with ∼36% of these lakes showing browning trends, and ∼1% of these lakes showing statistically significant (p-value <0.05) browning trends. The browning trends more likely occurred in small lakes in high latitude, low ground ice content regions, where air temperature increased and precipitation decreased. While temperature is projected to increase in response to climate change, our results provide one means to understand how biogeochemical cycles and ecological dynamics respond to climate change.

Remote sensing of water colour in small southeastern Australian waterbodies

The colour of a waterbody may be indicative of the water quality or environmental change. Monitoring water colour can therefore be an important proxy for various waterbody processes. To this aim, satellites are increasingly being used as viable alternatives to field measurements. This study investigates whether water colour derived from satellites is an effective predictor of spatial and temporal patterns of water quality or environmental change in small waterbodies and can be used to explain the drivers of trends in these waterbodies. As a case study, 145 small waterbodies (<1 km2) in the greater Melbourne, south-eastern Australia were analysed to understand water colour spatio-temporal patterns using Sentinel-2 and Landsat 5, 7 and 8 satellite surface reflectance imagery over a period of 30 years. We found that the baseline water colour of small waterbodies in the greater Melbourne region has a dominant wavelength in the green to yellow region of the visible spectrum (λd ranging from 532 to 578 nm). Waterbody design factors and broader climate factors were also tested to understand the spatial variation of baseline water colour. Macrophyte ratio and the shoreline development index were shown to be the primary waterbody design factors that affect water colour. Some waterbodies are responsive to climate variability based on investigating how climate factors impact the water colour variability. Local climate factors had more impact than regional climate factors. Results from this study highlight how water colour could be used as a proxy for waterbody health assessment and how spatio-temporal variations in water colour can be used to assess environmental trends.

National-scale remotely sensed lake trophic state from 1984 through 2020

Lake trophic state is a key ecosystem property that integrates a lake's physical, chemical, and biological processes. Despite the importance of trophic state as a gauge of lake water quality, standardized and machine-readable observations are uncommon. Remote sensing presents an opportunity to detect and analyze lake trophic state with reproducible, robust methods across time and space. We used Landsat surface reflectance data to create the first compendium of annual lake trophic state for 55,662 lakes of at least 10 ha in area throughout the contiguous United States from 1984 through 2020. The dataset was constructed with FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reproducible) in mind, where data are publicly available, relational keys from parent datasets are retained, and all data wrangling and modeling routines are scripted for future reuse. Together, this resource offers critical data to address basic and applied research questions about lake water quality at a suite of spatial and temporal scales.

Human and natural activities regulate organic matter transport in Chinese rivers

Rivers connect terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and export approximately 55.47 % of the net terrestrial carbon fixation. However, due to unavailable high-frequency monitoring data, litter is known about diurnal variation in riverine carbon transport on a national scale. Based on daily measurements between March 2021 and February 2022 at 1491 stations across China, this study clarified the spatiotemporal variations in riverine organic matter indicated by chemical oxygen demand (COD). Spatially, COD content showed a spatial pattern with high values in the northwest (p < 0.05), and COD flux was determined by water discharge (84.01 %). Human activities explained 73.20 % of the spatial variations in riverine COD content; in particular, agricultural planting significantly elevated riverine COD (r = 0.73, p < 0.01). Seasonally, 95.53 % of stations showed significant seasonal variations in COD contents (p < 0.05); 69.72 % (25.81 %) were identified as Type II (III) typically had the maximum (minimum) COD in summer (autumn). Moreover, except for human activities (41.08 ± 22.94 %), natural factors also contributed 47.41 ± 24.04 % to the seasonal variations. In summer, high temperatures increased COD by promoting algal proliferation at Type II stations; however, heavy precipitation diluted COD contents at Type III stations. In these cases, seasonal measurements were essential for estimating riverine organic matter transport, especially the values measured in spring and winter. This study has significant implications for managing the aquatic environment, estimating riverine organic matter transport, and balancing the global carbon budget.

Increased chlorophyll-a concentration in Barra Bonita reservoir during extreme drought periods

Climate projections models indicate that longer periods of droughts are expected within the next 100 years in various parts of South America. To understand the effects of longer periods of droughts on aquatic environments, we investigated the response of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration to recent severe drought events in the Barra Bonita Hydroelectric Reservoir (BBHR) in São Paulo State, Brazil. We used satellite imagery to estimate the Chl-a concentration from 2014 to 2020 using the Slope Index (NRMSE of 18.92% and bias of -0.20 mg m^-3). Ancillary data such as precipitation, water level and air temperature from the same period were also used. Drought events were identified using the standardized precipitation index (SPI). In addition, we computed the probability of future drought events. Two periods showed extremely dry conditions: 1) January-February (2014) and 2) April-May (2020). Both periods were characterized by a recurrence probability of 1in every 50 years. The highest correlation was observed between Chl-a concentration and SPI (-0.97) in 2014, while Chl-a had had the highest correlation with water level (-0.59) in 2020. These results provide new insights into the influence of extreme drought events on the Chl-a concentration in the BBHR and their relationship with other climate variables and reservoir water levels. Drought events imply less rainfall, higher temperatures, and atmospheric dryness, and these factors affect evaporation and the water levels in the reservoir.

Rapid changes to global river suspended sediment flux by humans

Rivers support indispensable ecological functions and human health and infrastructure. Yet limited river sampling hinders our understanding of consequential changes to river systems. Satellite-based estimates of suspended sediment concentration and flux for 414 major rivers reveal widespread global change that is directly attributable to human activity in the past half-century. Sediment trapping by dams in the global hydrologic north has contributed to global sediment flux declines to 49% of pre-dam conditions. Recently, intensive land-use change in the global hydrologic south has increased erosion, with river suspended sediment concentration on average 41 ± 7% greater than in the 1980s. This north-south divergence has rapidly reconfigured global patterns in sediment flux to the oceans, with the dominant sources of suspended sediment shifting from Asia to South America.

The Role of Rare Avian Species for Spatial Resilience of Shifting Biomes in the Great Plains of North America

Human activity causes biome shifts that alter biodiversity and spatial resilience patterns. Rare species, often considered vulnerable to change and endangered, can be a critical element of resilience by providing adaptive capacity in response to disturbances. However, little is known about changes in rarity patterns of communities once a biome transitions into a novel spatial regime. We used time series modeling to identify rare avian species in an expanding terrestrial (southern) spatial regime in the North American Great Plains and another (northern) regime that will become encroached by the southern regime in the near future. In this time-explicit approach, presumably rare species show stochastic dynamics in relative abundance – this is because they occur only rarely throughout the study period, may largely be absent but show occasional abundance peaks or show a combination of these patterns. We specifically assessed how stochastic/rare species of the northern spatial regime influence aspects of ecological resilience once it has been encroached by the southern regime. Using 47 years (1968–2014) of breeding bird survey data and a space-for-time substitution, we found that the overall contribution of stochastic/rare species to the avian community of the southern regime was low. Also, none of these species were of conservation concern, suggesting limited need for revised species conservation action in the novel spatial regime. From a systemic perspective, our results preliminarily suggest that stochastic/rare species only marginally contribute to resilience in a new spatial regime after fundamental ecological changes have occurred.
