Abstract
OBJECTIVE Belonging is often considered a buffer against the physical and emotional consequences of discrimination and racial climate stress Youth Soc. 48(5):649-72, 2016. However, recent research suggests that feelings of belonging toward an institution can be detrimental when an individual feels discriminated against by the same institution to which one feels a sense of connection J Behav Med. 44(4):571-8, 2021. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the moderating role of institutional belonging in the relationship between racial climate stress and health, as indexed by allostatic load (AL), a multi-system indicator of physiological dysregulation. METHODS In a sample of Black and White college students (N = 150; White = 82; Black = 68), self-reported racial climate stress, institutional belonging, and various demographic variables were collected. An AL composite was also collected, comprised of six biological measures of the SAM system, HPA axis, cardiovascular system, and metabolic system. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to explore the relationships between these variables. RESULTS Results demonstrated no main effect of racial climate stress on AL but did show a significant interaction between racial climate stress and belonging, such that the positive relationship between racial climate stress and AL was significant only for those who also felt high levels of institutional belonging (β int = .05, p = .006, 95% CI = 0.01 - 0.08). CONCLUSIONS Feeling a sense of belonging may have negative physiological consequences for those who experience racial climate stress in a college setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep is a natural and essential physiological need for individuals. Our study aimed to research the associations between accumulated social risks and sleep disorders. METHODS In this study, we came up with a polysocial risk score (PsRS), which is a cumulative social risk index composed of 13 social determinants of health. This research includes 239,165 individuals with sleep disorders and social determinants of health data from the UK Biobank cohort. First, logistic regression models were performed to examine the associations of social determinants of health and sleep disorders, including chronotype, narcolepsy, insomnia, snoring, short and long sleep duration. Then, PsRS was calculated based on statistically significant social determinants of health for each sleep disorder. Third, a genome-wide gene-environment interaction study was conducted to explore the interactions between single-nucleotide polymorphisms and PsRS in relation to sleep disorders. RESULTS Higher PsRS scores were associated with worse sleep status, with the adjusted odds ratio (OR) ranging from 1.10 (95% Confidence interval [CI]: 1.09-1.11) to 1.29 (95% CI: 1.27-1.30) for sleep disorders. Emotional stress (OR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.28-1.43) and not in paid employment (OR = 2.62, 95% CI: 2.51-2.74) were found to have significant contributions for sleep disorders. Moreover, multiple single-nucleotide polymorphisms were discovered to have interactions with PsRS, such as FRAS1 (P = 2.57 × 10-14) and CACNA1A (P = 8.62 × 10-14) for narcolepsy, and ACKR3 (P = 1.24 × 10-8) for long sleep. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggested that cumulative social risks was associated with sleep disorders, while the interactions between genetic susceptibility and disadvantaged social status are risk factors for the development of sleep disorders.

Abstract
Background: Melissa officinalis L. (MO), commonly known as lemon balm, a member of the mint family, is considered a calming herb. In various traditional medicines, it has been utilized to reduce stress and anxiety and promote sleep. A growing body of clinical evidence suggests that MO leaf extract supplementation possesses considerable neuropharmacological properties. However, its possible mechanism of action largely remains unknown. Objective: In the present in vitro studies, we comparatively investigated the central nervous system (CNS)-calming and antioxidative stress properties of an innovative standardized phospholipid carrier-based (Phytosome™) MO extract (Relissa™) vs. an unformulated dry MO extract. Methods: The neuropharmacological effect of the extract was studied in the anti-depressant enzymes γ-aminobutyrate transaminase (GABA-T) and monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) assays and SH-SY5Y cells brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression assay. The neuroprotective effect of the extract against oxidative stress was assessed in SH-SY5Y cell-based (H2O2-exposed) Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) and Total Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) assays. The cytotoxic effect of the extract was evaluated using MTT and LDH assays. The extract antioxidant effect was also evaluated in cell-free chemical tests, including TEAC-ABTS, DPPH, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), Oxygen Radical Antioxidant Capacity (ORAC), and Hydroxyl Radical Antioxidant Capacity (HORAC) assays. Results: Relissa™ exhibited high GABA-T inhibitory activity, IC50 (mg/mL) = 0.064 vs. unformulated dry MO extract, IC50 (mg/mL) = 0.27. Similar inhibitory effects were also observed for MAO-A. Relissa™ demonstrated an improved neuroprotective antioxidant effect on SH-SY5Y cells against H2O2-induced oxidative stress. Compared to unformulated dry MO extract, Relissa™ exerted high protective effect on H2O2-exposed SH-SY5Y cells, leading to higher cells BDNF expression levels. Moreover, cell-free chemical tests, including TEAC-ABTS, DPPH radical scavenging, FRAP, ORAC, and HORAC assays, validated the improved antioxidant effect of Relissa™ vs. unformulated dry MO extract. Conclusion: The results of the present study support the neuromodulating and neuroprotective properties of Relissa™, and its supplementation may help in the amelioration of emotional distress and related conditions.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Perfectionism is considered a predisposing and maintaining factor for insomnia disorder. However, previous studies were predominantly based on retrospective self-reports of sleep and have yielded mixed results. Here, we investigated associations between perfectionism, daily stress levels, pre-sleep arousal, and actigraphic and sleep diary-derived sleep in insomnia using an experience sampling design. METHODS Individuals with insomnia (n = 63) reported their trait perfectionism levels and completed assessments on seven consecutive days. Momentary stress levels were reported on mobile phones at three semirandom time points each day. Presleep arousal levels were rated each morning for the previous night. Sleep onset latency, total sleep time, wake after sleep onset, and sleep efficiency were assessed prospectively using actigraphic watches and sleep diaries. RESULTS Perfectionism dimensions and daily stress levels did not predict self-reported or actigraphic sleep parameters. Higher levels of somatic and cognitive presleep arousal were robustly associated with indicators of poorer same-night sleep. The concern over mistakes and doubts dimension of perfectionism interacted with cognitive presleep arousal in predicting self-reported sleep parameters. In the presence of higher presleep arousal, participants with high concern over mistakes and doubts experienced shorter self-reported total sleep time and lower sleep efficiency (both Ps < .01) than on days with lower cognitive arousal. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, our results did not indicate an impact of heightened perfectionism levels on sleep in individuals with insomnia, based on prospective sleep assessments. However, our findings provide further evidence for the role of somatic and cognitive presleep arousal, potentially interacting with perfectionism, in the perpetuation of insomnia symptoms. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine inequalities in sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic by gender, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic position (SEP), and test associations between discrimination and sleep quality in a national longitudinal cohort of emerging adult college students. PARTICIPANTS Participants were enrolled in college full-time and were aged 18-22 at baseline. METHODS Participants completed online surveys in spring 2020 (N = 707) and summer 2021 (n = 313). Measures included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Everyday Discrimination Scale. RESULTS Most students reported poor sleep quality (78% in 2020; 82% in 2021) and those from marginalized groups generally experienced worse sleep quality. Discrimination was associated with poorer concurrent sleep quality at both time points. CONCLUSIONS Sleep inequalities among college students continued to manifest during the pandemic, even when students were not necessarily on campus. Colleges should take a multi-pronged approach to promote sleep quality through individual, community, and institutional interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological distress is an important mental health problem in college students. Insomnia may be a major factor contributing to psychological distress. This study aimed to explore the indirect relationship between insomnia and psychological distress through the five PERMA wellbeing variables (i.e., positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning in life, and achievement) among nursing college students. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in China using an online survey design. Mediation analyses were examined using the PROCESS macro version 4.1 for SPSS 27.0. A total of 1741 nursing college students completed the online survey. RESULTS Insomnia was positively associated with psychological distress (p < 0.01, r = 0.673), while negative associations were detected between PERMA wellbeing variables and insomnia (p < 0.01, r range = -0.176 and -0.272), as well as psychological distress (p < 0.01, r range = -0.196 and -0.386). The association between insomnia and psychological distress was partially mediated by the participants' positive emotions (indirect effect = 0.137, SE = 0.024, 95% CI boot = [0.094, 0.188]), engagement (indirect effect = -0.033, SE = 0.010, 95% CI boot = [-0.054, -0.017]), and meaning in life (indirect effect = 0.027, SE = 0.014, 95% CI boot = [0.001, 0.055]) but not their relationships or achievement of the PERMA wellbeing variables. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest that the PERMA wellbeing variables, especially positive emotions, engagement, and meaning in life, could be potential mechanisms by which insomnia is associated with psychological distress. The mediating roles of PERMA wellbeing variables between insomnia and psychological distress could be incorporated into the health management of university administrations to promote the health and wellbeing of nursing college students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High levels of stress are frequent in university education, and a lack of sleep has been reported to make students more vulnerable to stress. The mechanisms through which sleep harms students have not been sufficiently clarified; therefore, this study aimed to explore the mediating role of self-control and resilience in the relationship between sleep quality and duration and perceived stress. METHODS Of 32 first-year college students, 21 (78%) were women, with a mean age of 18.47 (±0.84). They responded to a self-administered survey that included questions on stress, resilience, and sleep quality and recorded their daily sleep duration using a wristband for six days. RESULTS Perceived stress was significantly correlated with resilience (r = -0.63), self-control (r = -0.46), sleep duration (r = -0.35), and lower sleep quality (r = 0.57). Path analysis revealed that self-control and resilience were partially mediated by sleep quality (R2 = 0.62; p < 0.01) and completely mediated by sleep duration (R2 = 0.46; p < 0.01). In both models, self-control had a direct effect on resilience and had a good-fit index. CONCLUSION Being resilient seems to play a mediating role in the relationship between sleep and perceived stress; this ability can be favored by self-control, which is directly influenced by sleep.

Abstract
The 2019 coronavirus pandemic forced the shift to distance education aggravating mental and physical vulnerabilities of undergraduate students, including sleep. This review aims to describe sleep problem rates and prevalence, sleep pattern disruption, sleep duration, sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, psychological and socio-economic factors affecting sleep of undergraduates in 22 countries. A systematic search for articles published from 2020 to 2021 using 'COVID-19,' 'Coronavirus,' 'Pandemic,' 'Sleep,' 'Mental Health,' and 'Students' from PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane yielded 2550 articles, where 72 were included. Selection criteria were: English full-text available articles, undergraduates and not postgraduates, reported sleep outcomes, and participants not from allied health courses. Risk of bias was assessed using various Joanna Briggs Institute checklists and outcomes were descriptively synthesized. Prevalence of sleep problems was notable, while longitudinal studies showed increased rates. There was significantly increased sleep duration, and sleep pattern disruption during lockdowns. Several psychological, behavioural, environmental, demographic, and socio-economic factors were found to be associated with sleep changes. These highlight the pandemic's impact on sleep of undergraduate students and reveal opportunities for institutions to intervene with policies and programs to promote the well-being of undergraduates. Limitations include recall bias and underrepresentation of other countries. This study is self-funded with registration number RGAO-2021-0071.
