A review on state of art and perspectives of Metal-Organic frameworks (MOFs) in the fight against coronavirus SARS-CoV-2

Preparation of NH2-MIL-101(Fe) Metal Organic Framework and Its Performance in Adsorbing and Removing Tetracycline

Tetracycline's accumulation in the environment poses threats to human health and the ecological balance, necessitating efficient and rapid removal methods. Novel porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have garnered significant attention in academia due to their distinctive characteristics. This paper focuses on studying the adsorption and removal performance of amino-modified MIL-101(Fe) materials towards tetracycline, along with their adsorption mechanisms. The main research objectives and conclusions are as follows: (1) NH2-MIL-101(Fe) MOF materials were successfully synthesized via the solvothermal method, confirmed through various characterization techniques including XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDS, XPS, BET, and TGA. (2) NH2-MIL-101(Fe) exhibited a 40% enhancement in tetracycline adsorption performance compared to MIL-101(Fe), primarily through chemical adsorption following pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption process conformed well to Freundlich isotherm models, indicating multilayer and heterogeneous adsorption characteristics. Thermodynamic analysis revealed the adsorption process as a spontaneous endothermic reaction. (3) An increased adsorbent dosage and temperature correspondingly improved NH2-MIL-101(Fe)'s adsorption efficiency, with optimal performance observed under neutral pH conditions. These findings provide new strategies for the effective removal of tetracycline from the environment, thus holding significant implications for environmental protection.

Pd NPs decorated on crosslinked sodium alginate modified iron-based metal-organic framework Fe(BTC) as a green multifunctional catalyst for the oxidative amidation

The primary objective of this investigation was to develop a new nanocatalyst that could produce amides by oxidative amidation of benzyl alcohol, thereby reducing its environmental harm. To achieve this, Pd nanoparticle-immobilized crosslinked sodium alginate-modified iron-based metal-organic framework Fe(BTC) (Fe(BTC)@SA/ED/Pd), with excellent activity and selectivity in modified oxidative amidation of benzyl alcohol with amines, has been described. Crosslinked sodium alginate was modified on iron-based metal-organic framework Fe(BTC). It is worth noting that Pd nanoparticles were immobilized for the first time on a novel nanocomposite based on the Fe(BTC) MOF and crosslinked sodium alginate for tandem oxidative amidation to improve the eco-friendliness and economic efficiency of the process. The synergic effects of Fe(BTC), sodium alginate, and Pd NPs are important factors influencing the catalytic activity. Easy and green synthesis methods, availability of materials, high Pd loading, available catalytic sites, high surface area, high selectivity, and simple separation from the reaction medium are effective properties in catalytic activity.

The influence of HKUST-1 and MOF-76 hand grinding/mechanical activation on stability, particle size, textural properties and carbon dioxide sorption

In this study, we explore the mechanical treatment of two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), HKUST-1 and MOF-76, applying various milling methods to assess their impact on stability, porosity, and CO2 adsorption capacity. The effects of different mechanical grinding techniques, such as high-energy ball milling and hand grinding, on these MOFs were compared. The impact of milling time, milling speed and ball size during high-energy ball milling was assessed via the Design of Experiments methodology, namely using a 33 Taguchi orthogonal array. The results highlight a marked improvement in CO2 adsorption capacity for HKUST-1 through hand milling, increasing from an initial 25.70 wt.% (5.84 mmol g-1) to 41.37 wt.% (9.40 mmol g-1), marking a significant 38% increase. In contrast, high-energy ball milling seems to worsen this property, diminishing the CO2 adsorption abilities of the materials. Notably, MOF-76 shows resistance to hand grinding, closely resembling the original sample's performance. Hand grinding also proved to be well reproducible. These findings clarify the complex effects of mechanical milling on MOF materials, emphasising the necessity of choosing the proper processing techniques to enhance their stability, texture, and performance in CO2 capture and storage applications.

Polysilsesquioxane decorated ZIF-8 as a potential pH-responsive vehicle for topical delivery and release of acyclovir and tetracycline: Investigation of blood compatibility, cytotoxicity and antibacterial properties

In this research, poly-chloropropylmethyl-silsesquioxanen was prepared and decorated with ZIF-8 in order to investigate its loading capacity for acyclovir and tetracycline. Before and after drug loadings, the composites were characterized by FT-IR, SEM-EDS, XRD, and XPS analyses. Then, the in-vitro release of these drugs was investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy in different buffers (pH = 5, 7.4, and 9.1). The results showed that the release of ACV reached a maximum amount of 41.3 mg at pH = 7.4 during 12 h. In comparison, the release of TC reached a maximum amount of 22.5 mg at pH = 5 during 6 h. The blood compatibility, in-vitro cytotoxicity on the L929 fibroblast cells line, and antibacterial assay against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were also investigated for this composite as a drug carrier.

Preparation of UiO-66 MOF-Bonded Porous-Layer Open-Tubular Columns Using an In Situ Growth Approach for Gas Chromatography

The thermally stable zirconium-based MOF, UiO-66, was employed for the preparation of bonded porous-layer open-tubular (PLOT) GC columns. The synthesis included the in situ growth of the UiO-66 film on the inner wall of the capillary through a one-step solvothermal procedure. SEM-EDX analysis revealed the formation of a thin, continuous, uniform, and compact layer of UiO-66 polycrystals on the functionalized inner wall of the column. The average polarity (ΔIav = 700) and the McReynolds constants reflected the polar nature of the UiO-66 stationary phase. Several mixtures of small organic compounds and real samples were used to evaluate the separation performance of the fabricated columns. Linear alkanes from n-pentane to n-decane were baseline separated within 1.35 min. Also, a series of six n-alkylbenzenes (C3-C8) were separated within 3 min with a minimum resolution of 3.09, whereas monohalobenzene mixtures were separated at 220 °C within 14s. UiO-66 PLOT columns are ideally suited for the isothermal separation of chlorobenzene structural isomers at 210 °C within 45 s with Rs ≥ 1.37. The prepared column featured outstanding thermal stability (up to 450 °C) without any observed bleeding or significant impact on its performance. This feature enabled the analysis of various petroleum-based samples.

Novel Cu(II)-based metal-organic framework STAM-1 as a sulfur host for Li-S batteries

Due to the increasing demand for energy storage devices, the development of high-energy density batteries is very necessary. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have gained wide interest due to their particularly high-energy density. However, even this type of battery still needs to be improved. Novel Cu(II)-based metal-organic framework STAM-1 was synthesized and applied as a composite cathode material as a sulfur host in the lithium-sulfur battery with the aim of regulating the redox kinetics of sulfur cathodes. Prepared STAM-1 was characterized by infrared spectroscopy at ambient temperature and after in-situ heating, elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and textural properties by nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption at - 196 and 0 °C, respectively. Results of the SEM showed that crystals of STAM-1 created a flake-like structure, the surface was uniform and porous enough for electrolyte and sulfur infiltration. Subsequently, STAM-1 was used as a sulfur carrier in the cathode construction of a Li-S battery. The charge/discharge measurements of the novel S/STAM-1/Super P/PVDF cathode demonstrated the initial discharge capacity of 452 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C and after 100 cycles of 430 mAh g-1, with Coulombic efficiency of 97% during the whole cycling procedure at 0.5 C. It was confirmed that novel Cu-based STAM-1 flakes could accelerate the conversion of sulfur species in the cathode material.

Virus Management Using Metal-Organic Framework-Based Technologies

The eradication and isolation of viruses are two concurrent approaches to protect ourselves from viral infections and diseases. The quite versatile porous materials called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have recently emerged as efficient nanosized tools to manage viruses, and several strategies to accomplish these tasks have been developed. This review describes these strategies employing nanoscale MOFs against SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, tobacco mosaic virus, etc., which include the sequestration by host-guest penetration inside pores, mineralization, design of a physical barrier, controlled delivery of organic and inorganic antiviral drugs or bioinhibitors, photosensitization of singlet oxygen, and direct contact with inherently cytotoxic MOFs.

Sr(II) and Ba(II) Alkaline Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks (AE-MOFs) for Selective Gas Adsorption, Energy Storage, and Environmental Application

Two new alkaline earth metal-organic frameworks (AE-MOFs) containing Sr(II) (UPJS-15) or Ba(II) (UPJS-16) cations and extended tetrahedral linker (MTA) were synthesized and characterized in detail (UPJS stands for University of Pavol Jozef Safarik). Single-crystal X-ray analysis (SC-XRD) revealed that the materials are isostructural and, in their frameworks, one-dimensional channels are present with the size of ~11 × 10 Å2. The activation process of the compounds was studied by the combination of in situ heating infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermal analysis (TA) and in situ high-energy powder X-ray diffraction (HE-PXRD), which confirmed the stability of compounds after desolvation. The prepared compounds were investigated as adsorbents of different gases (Ar, N2, CO2, and H2). Nitrogen and argon adsorption measurements showed that UPJS-15 has SBET area of 1321 m2 g-1 (Ar) / 1250 m2 g-1 (N2), and UPJS-16 does not adsorb mentioned gases. From the environmental application, the materials were studied as CO2 adsorbents, and both compounds adsorb CO2 with a maximum capacity of 22.4 wt.% @ 0 °C; 14.7 wt.% @ 20 °C and 101 kPa for UPJS-15 and 11.5 wt.% @ 0°C; 8.4 wt.% @ 20 °C and 101 kPa for UPJS-16. According to IAST calculations, UPJS-16 shows high selectivity (50 for CO2/N2 10:90 mixture and 455 for CO2/N2 50:50 mixture) and can be applied as CO2 adsorbent from the atmosphere even at low pressures. The increased affinity of materials for CO2 was also studied by DFT modelling, which revealed that the primary adsorption sites are coordinatively unsaturated sites on metal ions, azo bonds, and phenyl rings within the MTA linker. Regarding energy storage, the materials were studied as hydrogen adsorbents, but the materials showed low H2 adsorption properties: 0.19 wt.% for UPJS-15 and 0.04 wt.% for UPJS-16 @ -196 °C and 101 kPa. The enhanced CO2/H2 selectivity could be used to scavenge carbon dioxide from hydrogen in WGS and DSR reactions. The second method of applying samples in the area of energy storage was the use of UPJS-15 as an additive in a lithium-sulfur battery. Cyclic performance at a cycling rate of 0.2 C showed an initial discharge capacity of 337 mAh g-1, which decreased smoothly to 235 mAh g-1 after 100 charge/discharge cycles.

Adsorption and Release Properties of Drug Delivery System Naproxen-SBA-15: Effect of Surface Polarity, Sodium/Acid Drug Form and pH

Mesoporous silica SBA-15 was prepared via sol-gel synthesis and functionalized with different types of organosilanes containing various organic functional groups: (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (SBA-15-NH₂), (3-mercaptopropyl)triethoxysilane (SBA-15-SH), triethoxymethylsilane (SBA-15-CH₃), triethoxyphenylsilane (SBA-15-Ph), and (3-isocynatopropyl)triethoxysilane (SBA-15-NCO). The prepared materials were investigated as drug delivery systems for naproxen. As model drugs, naproxen acid (HNAP) and its sodium salt (NaNAP) were used. Mentioned medicaments belong to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The prepared materials were characterized by different analytical methods such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis (N₂), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), ¹H, ¹³C and ²³Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H, ¹³C and ²³Na ss-NMR). The abovementioned analytical techniques confirmed the successful grafting of functional groups to the SBA-15 surface and the adsorption of drugs after the impregnation process. The BET area values decreased from 927 m² g^-1 for SBA-15 to 408 m² g^-1 for SBA-15-NCO. After drug encapsulation, a more significant decrease in surface area was observed due to the filling of pores with drug molecules, while the most significant decrease was observed for the SBA-15-NH₂ material (115 m² g^-1 for NaNAP and 101 m² g^-1 for HNAP). By combining TG and nitrogen adsorption results, the occurrence of functional groups and the affinity of drugs to the carriers' surface were calculated. The dominant factor was the volume of functional groups and intermolecular interactions. The highest drug affinity values were observed for phenyl and amine-modified materials (SBA-15-Ph = 1.379 μmol m^-2 mmol^-1 for NaNAP, 1.761 μmol m^-2 mmol^-1 for HNAP and SBA-15-NH₂ = 1.343 μmol m^-2 mmol^-1 for NaNAP, 1.302 μmol m^-2 mmol^-1 for HNAP) due to the formation of hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions, respectively. Drug release properties and kinetic studies were performed at t = 37 °C (normal human body temperature) in different media with pH = 2 as simulated human gastric fluid and pH = 7.4, which simulated a physiological environment. Determination of drug release quantity was performed with UV-VIS spectroscopy. The surface polarity, pH and naproxen form influenced the total released amount of drug. In general, naproxen sodium salt has a higher solubility than its acid form, thus significantly affecting drug release from surface-modified SBA-15 materials. Different pH conditions involved surface protonation and formation/disruption of intermolecular interactions, influencing both the release rate and the total released amount of naproxen. Different kinetic models, zero-order, first-order, Higuchi and Hixson-Crowell models, were used to fit the drug release data. According to the obtained experimental results, the drug release rates and mechanisms were determined.

Gd(III) metal-organic framework as an effective humidity sensor and its hydrogen adsorption properties

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a class of nanoporous materials built up by metal ions and organic linkers with several interesting potential applications. The present study described the synthesis and characterization of Gd(III)-based MOF with the chemical composition [Gd(BTC)(H₂O)]·DMF (BTC - trimesate, DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide), known as MOF-76(Gd) for hydrogen adsorption/desorption capacity and humidity sensing applications. The structure and morphology of as-synthesized material were studied using powder X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The crystal structure of MOF-76(Gd) consists of gadolinium (III) and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate ions, one coordinated aqua ligand and one crystallization DMF molecule. The polymeric framework of MOF-76(Gd) contains 1D sinusoidally shaped channels with sizes of 6.7 × 6.7 Å propagating along c crystallographic axis. The thermogravimetric analysis, heating infrared spectroscopy and in-situ heating powder X-ray diffraction experiments of the prepared framework exhibited thermal stability up to 550 °C. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurement at -196 °C showed a BET surface area of 605 m² g^-1 and pore volume of 0.24 cm³ g^-1. The maximal hydrogen storage capacity of MOF-76(Gd) was 1.66 wt % and 1.34 wt % -196 °C and -186 °C and pressure up to 1 bar, respectively. Finally, the humidity sensing measurements (water adsorption experiments) were performed, and the results indicate that MOF-76(Gd) is a suitable material for moisture sensing application with a fast response (11 s) and recovery time (2 s) in the relative humidity range of 11-98%.

Post-synthetically modified metal-porphyrin framework GaTCPP for carbon dioxide adsorption and energy storage in Li-S batteries

Lithium-sulphur batteries attract increasing interest due to their high theoretical specific capacity, advantageous economy, and "eco-friendliness". In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF) GaTCPP containing a porphyrinic base ligand was used as a conductive additive for sulphur. GaTCPP was synthesized, characterized, and post-synthetically modified by the transition metal ions (Co2+/Ni2+). The doping of GaTCPP ensured an increase in the carbon dioxide adsorption capacities, which were measured under different conditions. Post-synthetic modification of GaTCPP with Co2+/Ni2+ ions has been shown to increase carbon dioxide storage capacity from 22.8 wt% for unmodified material to 23.1 wt% and 26.5 wt% at 0 °C and 1 bar for Co2+ and Ni2+-doped analogues, respectively. As a conductive part of cathode material, MOFs displayed successful sulphur capture and encapsulation proven by stable charge/discharge cycle performances, high-capacity retention, and coulombic efficiency. The electrodes with pristine GaTCPP showed a discharge capacity of 699 mA h g-1 at 0.2C in the fiftieth cycle. However, the doping of GaTCPP by Ni2+ has a positive impact on the electrochemical properties, the capacity increased to 778 mA h g-1 in the fiftieth cycle at 0.2C.

Nanomaterials and metal-organic frameworks for biosensing applications of mutations of the emerging viruses

The world today lives in a state of terrible fear due to the mutation of the emerging COVID-19. With the continuation of this pandemic, there is an urgent need for fast, accurate testing devices to detect the emerging SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in terms of biosensors and point-of-care testing. Besides, the urgent development in personal defense tools, anti-viral surfaces and wearables, and smartphones open the door for simplifying the self-diagnosis process everywhere. This review introduces a quick COVID-19 overview: definition, transmission, pathophysiology, the identification and diagnosis, mutation and transformation, and the global situation. It also focuses on an overview of the rapidly advanced technologies based on nanomaterials and MOFs for biosensing, diagnosing, and viral control of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Finally, highlight the latest technologies, applications, existing achievements, and preventive diagnostic strategies to control this epidemic and combat the emerging coronavirus. This humble effort aims to provide a helpful survey that can be used to develop a creative solution and to lay down the future vision of diagnosis against COVID-19.

A Secure Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Critical Sars Crisis Management Using Random Sigmoidal Artificial Neural Networks

Since December 2019, the pandemic COVID-19 has been connected to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Early identification and diagnosis are essential goals for health practitioners because early symptoms correlate with those of other common illnesses including the common cold and flu. RT-PCR is frequently used to identify SARS-CoV-2 viral infection. Although this procedure can take up to 2 days to complete and sequential monitoring may be essential to figure out the potential of false-negative findings, RT-PCR test kits are apparently in low availability, highlighting the urgent need for more efficient methods of diagnosing COVID-19 patients. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based healthcare models are more effective at diagnosing and controlling large groups of people. Hence, this paper proposes a novel AI-enabled SARS detection framework. Here, the input CT images are collected and preprocessed using a block-matching filter and histogram equalization (HE). Segmentation is performed using Compact Entropy Rate Superpixel (CERS) technique. Features of segmented output are extracted using Histogram of Gradient (HOG). Feature selection is done using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The suggested Random Sigmoidal Artificial Neural Networks (RS-ANN) based classification approach effectively diagnoses the existence of the disease. The performance of the suggested Artificial intelligence model is analyzed and related to existing approaches. The suggested AI system may help identify COVID-19 patients more quickly than conventional approaches.

Modification of face masks with zeolite imidazolate framework-8: A tool for hindering the spread of COVID-19 infection

The worldwide spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has continued to accelerate, putting a considerable burden on public health, safety, and the global economy. Taking into consideration that the main route of virus transmission is via respiratory particles, the face mask represents a simple and efficient barrier between potentially infected and healthy individuals, thus reducing transmissibility per contact by reducing transmission of infected respiratory particles. However, long-term usage of a face mask leads to the accumulation of significant amounts of different pathogens and viruses onto the surface of the mask and can result in dangerous bacterial and viral co-infections. Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has recently emerged as an efficient water-stable photocatalyst capable of generating reactive oxygen species under light irradiation destroying dangerous microbial pathogens. The present study investigates the potential of using ZIF-8 as a coating for face masks to prevent the adherence of microbial/viral entities. The results show that after 2 h of UV irradiation, a polypropylene mask coated with ZIF-8 nanostructures is capable of eliminating S. Aureus and bacteriophage MS2 with 99.99% and 95.4% efficiencies, respectively. Furthermore, low-pathogenic HCoV-OC43 coronavirus was eliminated by a ZIF-8-modified mask with 100% efficiency already after 1 h of UV irradiation. As bacteriophage MS2 and HCoV-OC43 coronavirus are commonly used surrogates of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the revealed antiviral properties of ZIF-8 can represent an important step in designing efficient protective equipment for controlling and fighting the current COVID-19 pandemic.
