Abstract
BACKGROUND The level of food processing has gained interest as a potential determinant of human health. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the level of food processing and prostate cancer severity. METHODS A sample of 120 consecutive patients were examined for the following: their dietary habits, assessed through validated food frequency questionnaires; their dietary intake of food groups, categorized according to the NOVA classification; and their severity of prostate cancer, categorized into risk groups according to European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines. Uni- and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to test the association between the variables of interest. RESULTS Individuals reporting a higher consumption of unprocessed/minimally processed foods were less likely to have greater prostate cancer severity than those who consumed less of them in the energy-adjusted model (odds ratio (OR) = 0.38, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.17-0.84, p = 0.017 and OR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.12-0.91, p = 0.032 for medium/high vs. low grade and high vs. medium/low grade prostate cancers, respectively); however, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the association was not significant anymore. A borderline association was also found between a higher consumption of ultra-processed foods and greater prostate cancer severity in the energy-adjusted model (OR = 2.11, 95% CI: 0.998-4.44; p = 0.051), but again the association was not significant anymore after adjusting for the other covariates. CONCLUSIONS The level of food processing seems not to be independently associated with prostate cancer severity, while potentially related to other factors that need further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The significance of nutritional care in the management of cancer, particularly in the surgical treatment of abdominal cancer, is increasingly acknowledged. Body composition analysis, such as the Bioelectric impedance assay (BIA), and functional tests, e.g., handgrip strength, are used when assessing nutritional status alongside general and nutritional history, clinical examination, and laboratory tests. The primary approach in nutritional care is individually adjusted nutritional counselling and the use of medical nutrition, especially oral nutritional supplements. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of perioperative nutritional care on body composition and functional status in patients with carcinoma of the gastrointestinal tract, hepatobiliary system, and pancreas. PATIENTS AND METHODS 47 patients were included, 27 received preoperative and postoperative nutritional counselling and oral nutritional supplements (Group 1), while 20, due to surgical or organisational reasons, received nutritional care only postoperatively (Group 2). The effect of nutritional therapy was measured with bioimpedance body composition and handgrip measurements. RESULTS Group 2 had a higher average Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS) 2002 score upon enrolment (3 vs. 2 points); however, there was no difference when malnutrition was assessed using Global Leadership in Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. There was a relative increase in lean body mass and fat-free mass index (FFMI) 7 days after surgery in group 1 (+4,2% vs. -2,1% in group 2). There was no difference in handgrip strength. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that combined preoperative and postoperative nutritional care is superior to only postoperative nutritional care. It seems to prevent statistically significant lean mass loss 7 days after surgery but not after 14 days or 4 weeks.

Abstract
Background: Increased cancer rates denote that one in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Over 60% of cancer patients receive radiotherapy, either as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other treatments such as chemotherapy and surgery. Whilst radiotherapy is effective in destroying cancer cells, it also causes subsequent damage to healthy cells and surrounding tissue due to alterations in the tumor microenvironment and an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS). This can cause extensive damage that impairs tissue function, and the likelihood of tissue regeneration and restoration of function is significantly reduced as new healthy cells cannot survive in the damaged environment. In the treatment of head and neck cancers, radiotherapy can cause salivary gland dysfunction. This significantly impairs the patient's quality of life and there is currently no cure, only palliative treatment options. Tissue engineering approaches are used to mimic the microenvironment of the tissue and can mediate the damaged microenvironment via bioactive compounds, to support the delivery, survival, and proliferation of new, healthy cells into the damaged environment. Methods: In this study, retinyl acetate, a derivative of vitamin A, was successfully incorporated into electrospun polycaprolactone fibres. Results: SEM images and characterization analyses showed that all scaffolds produced had similar characteristics, including fiber morphology and scaffold wettability. The vitamin scaffolds were shown to exert an antioxidant effect through scavenging activity of both DPPH and hydroxyl radicals in vitro. Critically, the antioxidant scaffolds supported the growth of human submandibular gland cells and significantly upregulated the expression of GPx1, an antioxidant enzyme, when cultured under both normal conditions and under a simulated oxidative stress environment. Discussion: These results suggest that incorporation of retinyl acetate into electrospun fibres has may mediate the damaged microenvironment post cancer radiation therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess associations between forms of vitamin A and E (both individually and collectively) and the risk of prostate cancer, as well as identify potential effect modifiers. METHODS Utilizing data from the Singapore Prostate Cancer Study, a hospital-based case-control study, we measured the serum concentrations of 15 different forms of vitamins A and E in 156 prostate cancer patients and 118 control subjects, using a high-performance liquid chromatography technique. These forms included retinol, lutein, zeaxanthin, α-cryptoxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, α-carotene, β-carotene, lycopene, ubiquinone, δ-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol, α-tocopherol, δ-tocotrienol, γ-tocotrienol, and α-tocotrienol. The odds ratio and 95% confidence interval for associations between vitamin A and E and prostate cancer risk were estimated using logistic regression models after adjustment for potential confounders. The analyses were further stratified by smoking and alcohol consumption status. The mixture effect of micronutrient groups was evaluated using weighted quantile sum regression. RESULTS Higher concentrations of retinol, lutein, α-carotene, β-carotene, ubiquinone, α-tocopherol, δ-tocotrienol, γ-tocotrienol, and α-tocotrienol were significantly and positively associated with overall prostate cancer risk. Among ever-smokers, associations were stronger for lutein, β-cryptoxanthin and β-carotene compared with never-smokers. Among regular alcohol drinkers, associations were stronger for lutein, β-cryptoxanthin, ubiquinone, γ-tocotrienol and α-tocotrienol compared with non-regular alcohol drinkers. Retinol and α-tocotrienol contributed most to the group indices 'vitamin A and provitamin A carotenoids' and 'vitamin E', respectively. CONCLUSIONS Several serum vitamin A and E forms were associated with prostate cancer risk, with significant effect modification by smoking and alcohol consumption status. Our findings shed light on prostate cancer etiology.

Abstract
Previous studies have associated maternal diet during pregnancy with the development of sporadic unilateral retinoblastoma (RB), but few studies have focused on the role of individual nutrients. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between maternal nutrient intake during pregnancy and the development of sporadic unilateral RB in the offspring. A modified food frequency questionnaire, with additional questions on supplement use, was completed via a phone interview. Cases were recruited from hospitals and controls were comprised of friends and relatives of the patient without a history of cancer. Overall, 168 sporadic unilateral RB cases and 145 controls were included in case-control study. We performed logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI), adjusting for child's age, child's sex, parental race/ethnicity, maternal education, total calorie intake during pregnancy, maternal age at birth, maternal smoking during pregnancy, pre-pregnancy body mass index, maternal weight gain during pregnancy, paternal age at birth, and maternal multivitamin use in the year before pregnancy. In the adjusted model, the interquartile (IQR) increase in vitamin A intake, which was measured in retinol activity equivalent (RAE; OR: 0.64, 95 % CI: 0.46-0.90), and vitamin D intake (OR: 0.62, 95 % CI: 0.42-0.91) significantly reduced the risk of sporadic unilateral RB. These findings suggest that a higher intake of vitamins A and D can be a protective factor for sporadic unilateral RB. Further analyses in consideration of multi-exposures such as parental occupational exposures are warranted to discover the complex etiology of sporadic unilateral RB. In addition, the role of nutritional epigenetics for how maternal nutrient intake influences the risk of sporadic unilateral RB in the offspring still needs to be explored.

Abstract
The reprogramming of metabolism is a recognized cancer hallmark. It is well known that different signaling pathways regulate and orchestrate this reprogramming that contributes to cancer initiation and development. However, recent evidence is accumulating, suggesting that several metabolites could play a relevant role in regulating signaling pathways. To assess the potential role of metabolites in the regulation of signaling pathways, both metabolic and signaling pathway activities of Breast invasive Carcinoma (BRCA) have been modeled using mechanistic models. Gaussian Processes, powerful machine learning methods, were used in combination with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), a recent methodology that conveys causality, to obtain potential causal relationships between the production of metabolites and the regulation of signaling pathways. A total of 317 metabolites were found to have a strong impact on signaling circuits. The results presented here point to the existence of a complex crosstalk between signaling and metabolic pathways more complex than previously was thought.

Abstract
Cancer incidences are growing rapidly and causing millions of deaths globally. Cancer treatment is one of the most exigent challenges. Drug resistance is a natural phenomenon and is considered one of the major obstacles in the successful treatment of cancer by chemotherapy. Combination therapy by the amalgamation of various anticancer drugs has suggested modulating tumor response by targeting various signaling pathways in a synergistic or additive manner. Vitamin K is an essential nutrient and has recently been investigated as a potential anticancer agent. The combination of vitamin K analogs, such as vitamins K1, K2, K3, and K5, with other chemotherapeutic drugs have demonstrated a safe, cost-effective, and most efficient way to overcome drug resistance and improved the outcomes of prevailing chemotherapy. Published reports have shown that vitamin K in combination therapy improved the efficacy of clinical drugs by promoting apoptosis and cell cycle arrest and overcoming drug resistance by inhibiting P-glycoprotein. In this review, we discuss the mechanism, cellular targets, and possible ways to develop vitamin K subtypes into effective cancer chemosensitizers. Finally, this review will provide a scientific basis for exploiting vitamin K as a potential agent to improve the efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs.

Abstract
The effectiveness of immunotherapy in cancer patients depends on the activity of the host's immune system. The intestinal microbiome is a proven immune system modulator, which plays an important role in the development of many cancers and may affect the effectiveness of anti-cancer therapy. The richness of certain bacteria in the gut microbiome (e.g., Bifidobacterium spp., Akkermanisa muciniphila and Enterococcus hire) improves anti-tumor specific immunity and the response to anti-PD-1 or anti-PD-L1 immunotherapy by activating antigen-presenting cells and cytotoxic T cells within the tumor. Moreover, micronutrients affect directly the activities of the immune system or regulate their function by influencing the composition of the microbiome. Therefore, micronutrients can significantly influence the effectiveness of immunotherapy and the development of immunorelated adverse events. In this review, we describe the relationship between the supply of microelements and the abundance of various bacteria in the intestinal microbiome and the effectiveness of immunotherapy in cancer patients. We also point to the function of the immune system in the case of shifts in the composition of the microbiome and disturbances in the supply of microelements. This may in the future become a therapeutic target supporting the effects of immunotherapy in cancer patients.

Abstract
Microbial polysaccharides (MPs) offer immense diversity in structural and functional properties. They are extensively used in advance biomedical science owing to their superior biodegradability, hemocompatibility, and capability to imitate the natural extracellular matrix microenvironment. Ease in tailoring, inherent bio-activity, distinct mucoadhesiveness, ability to absorb hydrophobic drugs, and plentiful availability of MPs make them prolific green biomaterials to overcome the significant constraints of cancer chemotherapeutics. Many studies have demonstrated their application to obstruct tumor development and extend survival through immune activation, apoptosis induction, and cell cycle arrest by MPs. Synoptic investigations of MPs are compulsory to decode applied basics in recent inclinations towards cancer regimens. The current review focuses on the anticancer properties of commercially available and newly explored MPs, and outlines their direct and indirect mode of action. The review also highlights cutting-edge MPs-based drug delivery systems to augment the specificity and efficiency of available chemotherapeutics, as well as their emerging role in theranostics.

Abstract
Simple Summary This review brings attention to a crucial yet under-investigated subject which is vitamin–drug interactions. Fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K have been proven to possess many beneficial effects in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. Moreover, it has been reported that deficiencies of fat-soluble vitamins have been directly linked to COVID-19 infection-related morbidity and mortality, especially in high-risk populations such as cancer and autoimmune patients. However, many vitamin–drug interactions exist between most of the newly COVID-19 FDA-approved medications and fat-soluble vitamins. Hence, this mandates personalizing the COVID-19 treatment protocols, especially for patients who have any deficiency in any of these vital vitamins. Weighing the risk-to-benefit ratio of supplementing any of these fat-soluble vitamins with COVID-19 medications is considered crucial to maximize the therapeutic benefit and decrease the side effects of these drugs. Abstract COVID-19 is a recent pandemic that mandated the scientific society to provide effective evidence-based therapeutic approaches for the prevention and treatment for such a global threat, especially to those patients who hold a higher risk of infection and complications, such as patients with autoimmune diseases and cancer. Recent research has examined the role of various fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) in reducing the severity of COVID-19 infection. Studies showed that deficiency in fat-soluble vitamins abrogates the immune system, thus rendering individuals more susceptible to COVID-19 infection. Moreover, another line of evidence showed that supplementation of fat-soluble vitamins during the course of infection enhances the viral clearance episode by promoting an adequate immune response. However, more thorough research is needed to define the adequate use of vitamin supplements in cancer and autoimmune patients infected with COVID-19. Moreover, it is crucial to highlight the vitamin–drug interactions of the COVID-19 therapeutic modalities and fat-soluble vitamins. With an emphasis on cancer and autoimmune patients, the current review aims to clarify the role of fat-soluble vitamins in SARS-CoV-2 infection and to estimate the risk-to-benefit ratio of a fat-soluble supplement administered to patients taking FDA-approved COVID-19 medications such as antivirals, anti-inflammatory, receptor blockers, and monoclonal antibodies.

Abstract
Innovative therapeutic strategies in childhood cancer led to a significant reduction in cancer-related mortality. Cancer survivors are a growing fragile population, at risk of long-term side effects of cancer treatments, thus requiring customized clinical attention. Antineoplastic drugs have a wide toxicity profile that can limit their clinical usage and spoil patients’ life, even years after the end of treatment. The cardiovascular system is a well-known target of antineoplastic treatments, including anthracyclines, chest radiotherapy and new molecules, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors. We investigated nutritional changes in children with cancer from the diagnosis to the end of treatment and dietary habits in cancer survivors. At diagnosis, children with cancer may present variable degrees of malnutrition, potentially affecting drug tolerability and prognosis. During cancer treatment, the usage of corticosteroids can lead to rapid weight gain, exposing children to overweight and obesity. Moreover, dietary habits and lifestyle often dramatically change in cancer survivors, who acquire sedentary behavior and weak adherence to dietary guidelines. Furthermore, we speculated on the role of nutrition in the primary prevention of cardiac damage, investigating the potential cardioprotective role of diet-derived compounds with antioxidative properties. Finally, we summarized practical advice to improve the dietary habits of cancer survivors and their families.

Abstract
Glioblastoma (GBM), a highly lethal form of adult malignant gliomas with little clinical advancement, raises the need for alternative therapeutic approaches. Lipid-soluble vitamins have gained attention in malignant brain tumors owing to their pleiotropic properties and their anti-cancer potential have been reported in a number of human GBM cell lines. The aim of this paper is to systematically review and describe the roles of various biomarkers regulated by lipid-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, in the pathophysiology of GBM. Briefly, research articles published between 2005 and 2021 were systematically searched and selected from five databases (Scopus, PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE via Ovid, and Web of Science) based on the study’s inclusion and exclusion criteria. In addition, a number of hand-searched research articles identified from Google Scholar were also included for the analysis. A total of 40 differentially expressed biomarkers were identified from the 19 eligible studies. The results from the analysis suggest that retinoids activate cell differentiation and suppress the biomarkers responsible for stemness in human GBM cells. Vitamin D appears to preferentially modulate several cell cycle biomarkers, while vitamin E derivatives seem to predominantly modulate biomarkers related to apoptosis. However, vitamin K1 did not appear to induce any significant changes to the Raf/MEK/ERK signaling or apoptotic pathways in human GBM cell lines. From the systematic analysis, 12 biomarkers were identified that may be of interest for further studies, as these were modulated by one or two of these lipid-soluble vitamins.

Abstract
The use of fluorescent probes in visible detection has been developed over the last several decades. Biomolecules are essential in the biological processes of organisms, and their distribution and concentration are largely influenced by environmental factors. Significant advances have occurred in the applications of fluorescent probes for the detection of the dynamic localization and quantity of biomolecules during various environmental stress-induced physiological and pathological processes. Herein, we summarize representative examples of small molecule-based fluorescent probes that provide bimolecular information when the organism is under environmental stress. The discussion includes strategies for the design of smart small-molecule fluorescent probes, in addition to their applications in biomolecule imaging under environmental stresses, such as hypoxia, ischemia-reperfusion, hyperthermia/hypothermia, organic/inorganic chemical exposure, oxidative/reductive stress, high glucose stimulation, and drug treatment-induced toxicity. We believe that comprehensive insight into the beneficial applications of fluorescent probes in biomolecule detection under environmental stress should enable the further development and effective application of fluorescent probes in the biochemical and biomedical fields.

Abstract
Objective To explore the relationship between vitamins levels and disease-related indicators in children with acute leukemia (AL). Methods A total of 107 hospitalized children with AL were enrolled in this study and assigned to one group in each of the following categories: infected group (n = 52) and noninfected group (n = 55); treatment remission group (n = 56) and nonremission group (n = 51); high-risk (HR) group (n = 44), intermediate risk (IR) group (n = 53), and slight risk (SR) group (n = 8); cyclophosphamide + cytosine arabinoside+6-mercaptopurine + pegaspargase group (CAML, n = 15); methotrexate group (MTX, n = 9); and vindesine + daunomycin + L-asparaginasum + prednisone (VALP, n = 38). Hematological and serological parameters, hepatic and renal function, and changes in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B9, B12, C, D, and E serum content in children with AL were analyzed to investigate their relationship with AL disease-related factors. Results The vitamin D level was significantly higher in the noninfected group than in the infected group (P < 0.05). Compared with the nonremission group, the level of vitamin B1 in the treatment remission group was significantly higher, while the levels of vitamin B6 and B12 were notably lower (P < 0.05). The levels of vitamins B6 and B12 were notably different among the treatment groups. Multivariate analysis showed that hemoglobin (Hb) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were predisposing factors of AL in children. The disease type (acute lymphoblastic leukemia/acute myelogenous leukemia) was the factor affecting remission in AL children. Abnormal kidney function and the occurrence of icterus were the influencing factors for the risk degree in AL children. Platelet (PLT) count, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), neutrophils (N), and immunophenotype were shown to affect the choice of therapeutic regimens. Conclusion There are notable vitamins imbalances in children with AL. The imbalances influence disease-related factors and therefore provide some references for the prognosis and treatment of AL.

Abstract
One of the common traits found in cancer patients is malnutrition and cachexia, which affects between 25% to 60% of the patients, depending on the type of cancer, diagnosis, and treatment. Given the lack of current effective pharmacological solutions for low muscle mass and sarcopenia, holistic interventions are essential to patient care, as well as exercise and nutrition. Thus, the present narrative review aimed to analyze the nutritional, pharmacological, ergonutritional, and physical exercise strategies in cancer-related cachexia. The integration of multidisciplinary interventions could help to improve the final intervention in patients, improving their prognosis, quality of life, and life expectancy. To reach these aims, an extensive narrative review was conducted. The databases used were MedLine (PubMed), Cochrane (Wiley), Embase, PsychINFO, and CinAhl. Cancer-related cachexia is a complex multifactorial phenomenon in which systemic inflammation plays a key role in the development and maintenance of the symptomatology. Pharmacological interventions seem to produce a positive effect on inflammatory state and cachexia. Nutritional interventions are focused on a high-energy diet with high-density foods and the supplementation with antioxidants, while physical activity is focused on strength-based training. The implementation of multidisciplinary non-pharmacological interventions in cancer-related cachexia could be an important tool to improve traditional treatments and improve patients' quality of life.

Abstract
Vitamin A and carotenoids are fat-soluble micronutrients that play important role as powerful antioxidants modulating oxidative stress and cancer development. Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. As the risk of breast cancer is dependent on various lifestyle factors such as dietary modifications, there is increasing interest surrounding the anti-cancerous properties of vitamin A and carotenoids. Despite the suggested protective roles of vitamin A and carotenoids in breast cancer development, their clinical application for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer is limited. In this narrative review, we discuss the roles of vitamin A and carotenoids along with the evaluation method of vitamin A status. We also exhibit the association of genetic variations involved in metabolism of vitamin A and carotenoids with cancers and other diseases. We demonstrate the epidemiological evidence for the relationship of vitamin A and carotenoids with breast cancer risk, their effects on cancer mechanism, and the recent updates in clinical practice of vitamin A or carotenoids as a potential therapeutic agent against breast cancer. This review provides insight into the preventive and therapeutic roles of vitamin A and carotenoids in breast cancer development and progression.

Abstract
Phenolic acids comprise a class of phytochemical compounds that can be extracted from various plant sources and are well known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A few of the most common naturally occurring phenolic acids (i.e., caffeic, carnosic, ferulic, gallic, p-coumaric, rosmarinic, vanillic) have been identified as ingredients of edible botanicals (thyme, oregano, rosemary, sage, mint, etc.). Over the last decade, clinical research has focused on a number of in vitro (in human cells) and in vivo (animal) studies aimed at exploring the health protective effects of phenolic acids against the most severe human diseases. In this review paper, the authors first report on the main structural features of phenolic acids, their most important natural sources and their extraction techniques. Subsequently, the main target of this analysis is to provide an overview of the most recent clinical studies on phenolic acids that investigate their health effects against a range of severe pathologic conditions (e.g., cancer, cardiovascular diseases, hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and viral infections—including coronaviruses-based ones).

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Vitamin D was currently believed to have effects on numerous cancer pathogenic processes.
AIM: This study was to assess the correlation of Vitamin D serum level in women with carcinoma cervix and also evaluate the effect of carcinoma cervix on the Vitamin D serum.
METHODS: This was an observational with a cross-sectional study. Participants were women with cervical cancer who have not received any treatment, presented to the Oncology Clinic of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, and women without cervical cancer. The level of Vitamin D3 was analyzed in the Serology Laboratory of Clinical Pathology Department of Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital.
RESULTS: There were 113 participants consisted of 58 women with cervical cancer and 55 healthy women. Mean levels of Vitamin D3 were significantly lower in cervical cancer group than non-cervical cancer group (26.74 ± 13.166 vs. 32.16±14.86, p = 0.022).
CONCLUSION: The level of Vitamin D3 was found to be significantly higher in the non-cervical cancer group than cervical cancer group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Experimental and clinical studies have shown that vitamins A and E can inhibit cancer formation and progression. The unfavourable status of these vitamins can represent risk factors for the disease. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between the nutritional status of vitamins A and E (serum levels and dietary intake) and histopathological outcomes in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC) patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS We applied a cross-sectional study (2017-2018) and quantified retinol (ROH) and α-tocopherol (TOH) serum levels and vitamins dietary intake of 46 PTC patients. Serum vitamins were quantified by high efficiency liquid chromatography and vitamins dietary intake was analyzed by 24-hr dietary recalls. RESULTS Patients with lower ROH serum levels were more likely to present lymph node metastasis and/or angiolymphatic invasion (p = 0.025). In addition, higher vitamin A and vitamin E intake are related to the absence of extrathyroidal extension (p = 0.013) and lymph node metastasis (p = 0.007), respectively. Our findings suggest that a ROH serum level greater than 2.65 μmol/L in PTC patients may be a protective factor against the presence of lymph node metastasis and angiolymphatic invasion. In addition, vitamin A and E intake may protect against extrathyroidal extension and lymph node metastasis. CONCLUSIONS A favourable nutritional status (higher serum levels and/or intake) of vitamin A and E may be associated with less aggressive tumours in PTC patients.

Abstract
Determination of folic acid and riboflavin in biological samples is difficult due to their high polarity, low concentration, chemical instability, and complex matrix. In this study, the polypyrrole-coated magnetic nanocomposite (Fe3O4@PPy) was synthesized innovatively with the assistance of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. To evaluate the adsorption mechanism and the feasibility of synthesized Fe3O4@PPy as an adsorbent, the adsorption capacities, kinetics and thermodynamics of folic acid and riboflavin were investigated systemically. Furthermore, in light of the chemical instability of folic acid and riboflavin a method for rapid extraction and detection of them from human urine within 10 min was developed successfully by combining magnetic solid phase extraction with ultra-performance liquid chromatography (MSPE/UPLC). The adsorption parameters including sorbent amount, pH value, extraction time, desorption solvent and desorption time were studied. Under optimum conditions, the performance of the established determination method was validated with the linearly dependent coefficients (>0.9995), the limits of detection (0.02-0.05 µg/mL), the limits of quantification (0.07-0.18 µg/mL), and the recoveries (92.2-105.1%, with relative standard deviation < 3.3%). The rapid extraction and detection of folic acid and riboflavin from real urine samples were achieved subsequently. The present study suggests that the developed method exhibits a promising application in the analysis of free folic acid and riboflavin in human urine samples, which can provide a reference for the clinical drug monitoring and treatment.

Abstract
Many studies performed to date have implicated select microbes and dietary factors in a variety of cancers, yet the complexity of both these diseases and the relationship between these factors has limited the ability to translate findings into therapies and preventative guidelines. Here we begin by discussing recently published studies relating to dietary factors, such as vitamins and chemical compounds used as ingredients, and their contribution to cancer development. We further review recent studies, which display evidence of the microbial-diet interaction in the context of cancer. The field continues to advance our understanding of the development of select cancers and how dietary factors are related to the development, prevention, and treatment of these cancers. Finally, we highlight the science available in the discussion of common misconceptions with regards to cancer and diet. We conclude this review with thoughts on where we believe future research should focus in order to provide the greatest impact towards human health and preventative medicine.

Abstract
The potency of oil-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E and K) in fortified foods can be improved by understanding how food matrices impact their bioavailability. In this review, the major food matrix effects influencing the bioavailability of oil-soluble vitamins are highlighted: oil content, oil composition, particle size, interfacial properties, and food additives. Droplet size and aggregation state in the human gut impact vitamin bioavailability by modulating lipid digestion, vitamin release, and vitamin solubilization. Vitamins in small isolated oil droplets typically have a higher bioavailability than those in large or aggregated ones. Emulsifiers, stabilizers, or texture modifiers can therefore affect bioavailability by influencing droplet size or aggregation. The dimensions of the hydrophobic domains in mixed micelles depends on lipid type: if the domains are too small, vitamin bioavailability is low. Overall, this review highlights the importance of carefully designing food matrices to improve vitamin bioavailability.

Abstract
Numerous studies have shown that vitamins reduce the risk of cancers, but the relationship between serum vitamin levels and breast cancer is still controversial. In this study, we evaluated serum levels of vitamins in Korean patients with benign breast disease or breast cancer and investigated their associations with clinical and laboratory parameters. Concentrations of vitamin A, D, and E, together with homocysteine and methylmalonic acid as biomarkers of vitamin B12 deficiency, were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in the serum of 104 breast cancer patients, 62 benign breast disease patients, and 75 healthy Korean females. We further assessed possible associations between vitamin levels and breast cancer subtypes, the presence of lymph node metastasis, and tumor stages. Serum concentrations of vitamins A and E were significantly lower in breast cancer patients and in benign breast disease patients than in healthy controls. Severe vitamin D deficiency was more prevalent in breast cancer patients than in healthy controls. Vitamin D level was significantly lower in breast cancer patients with estrogen receptor-negative or triple-negative subtypes than in those with other subtypes. Further research with a larger study population is required to elucidate the role of vitamins in breast cancer.

Abstract
Ascorbic acid is a powerful antioxidant compound involved in many biological functions, and a chronic deficiency is at the origin of scurvy disease. A simple, rapid, and cost-effective capillary electrophoresis method was developed for the separation and simultaneous quantification of ascorbic acid and the major degradation products: dehydroascorbic acid, furfural, and furoic acid. Systematic optimization of the conditions was performed that enabled baseline separation of the compounds in less than 10 min. In addition to simultaneous quantification of ascorbic acid alongside to the degradation products, stability studies demonstrated the possibility using capillary electrophoresis to separate and identify the major degradation products. Thus, high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry experiments were conducted in order to identify an unknown degradation product separated by capillary electrophoresis and significantly present in degraded samples. Comparison of mass spectrometry data and capillary electrophoresis electropherograms allowed to identify unambiguously trihydroxy-keto-valeraldehyde. Finally, capillary electrophoresis was successfully applied to evaluate the composition of different pharmaceutical preparation of ascorbic acid. Results showed the excellent performance of the capillary electrophoresis method due to the separation of excipients from the compounds of interest, which demonstrated the relevance of using an electrophoretic separation in order to perform comprehensive stability studies of ascorbic acid.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between vitamin intake and the occurrence of cancer is controversial. The aim of this study was to examine the genetic associations between vitamins D, E, and B12 and five cancers (i.e., colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, malignant melanoma, and squamous cell carcinoma). METHODS This study started from genome-wide association data for three vitamins (N = 11 238) and five cancers (N = 373 316). The study analyzed their associations using Mendelian randomization (MR) methods. Additionally, survival analysis was performed using data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to further evaluate some MR results. RESULTS MR analysis indicated that intake of vitamins D, E, and B12 is not relevant to the risk for the five cancers (PMR > Bonferroni-corrected P = 0.02). Some of the results were supported by epidemiological observations; some were further supported by survival analysis using TCGA data. CONCLUSION There is no genetic evidence to support the association between intake of vitamins D, E, and B12 and the risk for colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers, malignant melanoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract
We studied the association between food intake, based on the extent of processing, and prostate cancer risk in a population-based case-control study conducted in Montreal, Canada in 2005–2012. Incident prostate cancer cases (n = 1919) aged ≤75 years were histologically confirmed. Population controls (n = 1991) were randomly selected from the electoral list and frequency-matched to cases by age (±5 years). A 63-item food frequency questionnaire focusing on the two years prior to diagnosis/interview was administered by interviewers. The NOVA classification was used to categorize foods based on processing level. Unconditional logistic regression estimated the association between food intake and prostate cancer risk, adjusting for age, education, ethnicity, family history, and timing of last prostate cancer screening. Consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed foods showed a slight, inverse association (Odd ratio [OR] 0.86, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.70–1.07; highest vs. lowest quartile) with prostate cancer. An increased risk was observed with higher intake of processed foods (OR 1.29, 95%CI 1.05–1.59; highest vs. lowest quartile), but not with consumption of ultra-processed food and drinks. The associations with unprocessed/minimally processed foods and processed foods were slightly more pronounced for high-grade cancers (ORs 0.80 and 1.33, respectively). Findings suggest that food processing may influence prostate cancer risk.

Abstract
Considerable metabolic reprogramming has been observed in a conserved manner across multiple cancer types, but their true causes remain elusive. We present an analysis of around 50 such reprogrammed metabolisms (RM) including the Warburg effect, nucleotide de novo synthesis, and sialic acid biosynthesis in cancer. Analyses of the biochemical reactions conducted by these RMs, coupled with gene expression data of their catalyzing enzymes, in 7,011 tissues of 14 cancer types, revealed that all RMs produce more H+ than their original metabolisms. These data strongly support a model that these RMs are induced or selected to neutralize a persistent intracellular alkaline stress due to chronic inflammation and local iron overload. To sustain these RMs for survival, cells must find metabolic exits for the nonproton products of these RMs in a continuous manner, some of which pose major challenges, such as nucleotides and sialic acids, because they are electrically charged. This analysis strongly suggests that continuous cell division and other cancerous behaviors are ways for the affected cells to remove such products in a timely and sustained manner. As supporting evidence, this model can offer simple and natural explanations to a range of long-standing open questions in cancer research including the cause of the Warburg effect. SIGNIFICANCE: Inhibiting acidifying metabolic reprogramming could be a novel strategy for treating cancer.

Abstract
The effectiveness of existing anti-cancer therapies is based mainly on the stimulation of apoptosis of cancer cells. Most of the existing therapies are somewhat toxic to normal cells. Therefore, the quest for nontoxic, cancer-specific therapies remains. We have demonstrated the ability of liposomes containing anacardic acid, mitoxantrone and ammonium ascorbate to induce the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis via reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by the killing of cancer cells in monolayer culture and shown its specificity towards melanoma cells. Liposomes were prepared by a lipid hydration, freeze-and-thaw (FAT) procedure and extrusion through polycarbonate filters, a remote loading method was used for dug encapsulation. Following characterization, hemolytic activity, cytotoxicity and apoptosis inducing effects of loaded nanoparticles were investigated. To identify the anticancer activity mechanism of these liposomes, ROS level and caspase 9 activity were measured by fluorescence and by chemiluminescence respectively. We have demonstrated that the developed liposomal formulations produced a high ROS level, enhanced apoptosis and cell death in melanoma cells, but not in normal cells. The proposed mechanism of the cytotoxic action of these liposomes involved specific generation of free radicals by the iron ions mechanism.

Abstract
Malignant cells frequently demonstrate an oncogenic-driven reliance on glycolytic metabolism to support their highly proliferative nature. Overexpression of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK) may promote this unique metabolic signature of tumor cells by inhibiting mitochondrial function. PDKs function to phosphorylate and inhibit pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) activity. Silencing of PDK expression has previously been shown to restore mitochondrial function and reduce tumor cell proliferation. High dose Vitamin B1, or thiamine, possesses antitumor properties related to its capacity to reduce PDH phosphorylation and promote its enzymatic activity, presumably through PDK inhibition. Though a promising nutraceutical approach for cancer therapy, thiamine's low bioavailability may limit clinical effectiveness. Here, we have demonstrated exploiting the commercially available lipophilic thiamine analogs sulbutiamine and benfotiamine increases thiamine's anti-cancer effect in vitro. Determined by crystal violet proliferation assays, both sulbutiamine and benfotiamine reduced thiamine's millimolar IC50 value to micromolar equivalents. HPLC analysis revealed that sulbutiamine and benfotiamine significantly increased intracellular thiamine and TPP concentrations in vitro, corresponding with reduced levels of PDH phosphorylation. Through an ex vitro kinase screen, thiamine's activated cofactor form thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) was found to inhibit the function of multiple PDK isoforms. Attempts to maximize intracellular TPP by exploiting thiamine homeostasis gene expression resulted in enhanced apoptosis in tumor cells. Based on our in vitro evaluations, we conclude that TPP serves as the active species mediating thiamine's inhibitory effect on tumor cell proliferation. Pharmacologic administration of benfotiamine, but not sulbutiamine, reduced tumor growth in a subcutaneous xenograft mouse model. It remains unclear if benfotiamine's effects in vivo are associated with PDK inhibition or through an alternative mechanism of action. Future work will aim to define the action of lipophilic thiamine mimetics in vivo in order to translate their clinical usefulness as anticancer strategies.

Abstract
Vitamins and carotenoids are organic compounds that are important for vital functions of the human organism. Since the human body is not able to synthesize most of these micronutrients, they need to be supplied by the intake of food or supplements. The aim of this study was to analyze whether a whole food based, encapsulated fruit, berry, and vegetable juice powder concentrate provides bioavailable carotenoids and vitamins A (all-trans retinol), E and C. Eighteen healthy subjects received 6 capsules a day for 8 weeks, which provided 2.91 mg β-carotene, 490 μg vitamin A, 18.7 mg vitamin E, 159 mg vitamin C, 6.1 mg lutein and 1 mg lycopene. Plasma concentrations of several carotenoids and vitamins before and after supplementation were measured. After 8 weeks of supplementation, the plasma concentration of the following carotenoids increased significantly: α-carotene increased from 59.6 ± 22.4 nmol/L to 85.7 ± 24.2 nmol/L (p = 0.002), β-cryptoxanthin from 106.7 ± 39.8 nmol/L to 151.9 ± 57.9 nmol/L (p = 0.017), and lycopene from 1.2 ± 0.5 μmol/L to 1.7 ± 0.5 μmol/L (p = 0.005). Significant increases were also observed for plasma concentrations of vitamin C from 70 ± 20 μmol/L to 90 ± 10 μmol/L (p < 0.001), all-trans retinol from 1.99 ± 0.24 μmol/L to 2.30 ± 0.66 μmol/L (p = 0.015), and α-tocopherol from 27 ± 6 μmol/L to 32 ± 6 μmol/L (p = 0.008). For those micronutrients with accepted plasma reference ranges, all observed increases levelled off around the upper limit of the individual reference range. The data demonstrate that the investigated supplement is able to increase plasma concentrations of certain carotenoids and vitamins of healthy subjects within 8 weeks.

Abstract
Cutaneous malignant melanoma is a heterogeneous disease, being the consequence of specific genetic alterations along several molecular pathways. Despite the increased knowledge about the biology and pathogenesis of melanoma, the incidence has grown markedly worldwide, making it extremely important to develop preventive measures. The beneficial role of correct nutrition and of some natural dietary compounds in preventing malignant melanoma has been widely demonstrated. This led to numerous studies investigating the role of several dietary attitudes, patterns, and supplements in the prevention of melanoma, and ongoing research investigates their impact in the clinical management and outcomes of patients diagnosed with the disease. This article is an overview of recent scientific advances regarding specific dietary compounds and their impact on melanoma development and treatment.

Abstract
The study aimed to examine circulating vitamins A, E, D, and B12 and folate in patients with urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) and detect potential interaction effects of these micronutrients on UBC risk. A case-control study was conducted on 262 UBC patients and 254 matched controls. Vitamins A and E were assessed by ultra performance liquid chromatography, and vitamins D and B12 and folate were assessed by immunological methods. Binary logistic regression models were used to test associations of plasma vitamins tertiles with UBC risk. A multifactor dimensionality reduction method (MDR) was applied to assess interactive effects of the vitamins and tobacco on UBC risk. Higher levels in vitamins A, E, and D were associated with lower occurrence of UBC. No significant association was observed in plasma folate or vitamin B12 with UBC. There were redundancy interactions of plasma vitamin D with tobacco and with plasma vitamin A on UBC risk. Even though the study could not ascertain causality, the findings suggest that vitamins A, E, and D might be protective against UBC. Vitamins A and D interact antagonistically with each other's and with tobacco to modulate UBC risk. These interactions should be taken in consideration for the prevention of UBC.

Abstract
Chronic inflammation and diet play crucial roles in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); yet the association between dietary inflammatory potential and risk of HCC has rarely been investigated. This study aimed to examine whether a higher dietary inflammatory index (DII®) score (indicating a pro-inflammatory diet) is associated with an increased risk of HCC in a matched case-control study conducted between September 2013 and October 2017 in South China. A total of 659 cases with newly diagnosed, previously untreated HCC and 659 controls individually matched on age (±3 years) and sex were included in this study. DII scores were computed based on dietary intake information collected via a validated 79-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) during the one year prior to diagnosis (for the cases) or interview (for the controls). Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) between the DII score and the risk of HCC, adjusted for age, energy intake, body mass index, physical activity, marital status, education, household income, smoking status, and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection status. Compared with subjects in the lowest DII tertile, subjects in the highest tertile had an elevated risk of HCC (fully adjusted OR: 3.22, 95% CI: 1.30-7.98, P-trend = 0.009). In stratified analyses, a significantly positive association was observed only in men, individuals with lower education level, smokers and non-alcohol drinkers. In conclusion, a higher DII score, representing a more inflammatory diet, was associated with an increased risk of HCC, in men, individuals with lower education level, smokers and non-alcohol drinkers.

Background: Vitamin E has anti-cancer properties, which was demonstrated mainly due to its antioxidant effect. Several epidemiological studies have investigated the association between vitamin E consumption and the risk of bladder cancer. However, the results were inconsistent. The meta-analysis study aimed to evaluate the association of vitamin E consumption and the risk of bladder cancer. METHODS We conducted a systematic literature search in the electronic databases, which included MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library till 1 January 2016. The pooled relative risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated depending on the heterogeneity among studies. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were also performed. Publication bias was assessed using Begg's test and Egger's test. RESULTS A total of 11 prospective studies (3 randomized clinical trials and 8 cohort studies) including 575601 participants were identified to be eligible for our present meta-analysis. The pooled RRs with 95% CI for highest versus lowest vitamin E consumption was 0.89 (0.78-1.00). An inverse linear association between vitamin E consumption and bladder cancer risk was detected in the dose response analysis. The results were also stable in the subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis. Meanwhile, no obvious publication bias was observed. CONCLUSIONS Our study indicates that vitamin E consumption was inversely associated with the risk of bladder cancer.

Abstract
There has been accumulating evidence that several micronutrients may play a protective role in the risk of solid cancers. However, their role in hematological malignancies remains to be elucidated; this meta-analysis aims to evaluate the associations between micronutrient intake as well as supplementation and risk of hematological cancer in adults. Eligible cohort studies (examining intake of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, lycopene, folate, iron, carotenoids, beta-carotene, selenium, pyridoxine) were sought in PubMed up to July 31, 2016. Random-effects models were used for the calculation of pooled relative risks (RR) with their 95% confidence intervals (CI). Twelve cohort studies were deemed eligible. Null associations were noted regarding supplemented vitamin A (pooled relative risk [RR] = 0.92, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.80-1.07), supplemented vitamin C (pooled RR = 1.00, 95%CI: 0.90-1.12), total vitamin D (pooled RR = 1.05, 95%CI: 0.91-1.20), supplemented vitamin E (pooled RR = 0.98, 95%CI: 0.88-1.10), and dietary lycopene intake (pooled RR = 1.00, 95%CI: 0.86-1.16) and the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. No summary estimates are provided for other hematological malignancies due to the limited number of studies. Future prospective trials should be conducted for a better understanding of this field; especially regarding Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia and plasma cell neoplasms, on which data are scarce.

Abstract
Radical oxygen species formed in human tissue cells by many endogenous and exogenous pathways cause extensive oxidative damage which has been linked to various human diseases. This review paper provides an overview of lipid peroxidation and focuses on the free radicals-initiated processes of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidative modification and DNA oxidative damage, which are widely associated with the initiation and development of atherosclerosis and carcinogenesis, respectively. The article subsequently provides an overview of the recent human trials or even in vitro investigations on the potential of natural antioxidant compounds (such as carotenoids; vitamins C and E) to monitor LDL and DNA oxidative changes.

Abstract
Processed foods, generally known as modified raw foods produced by innovative processing technologies alters the food constituents such natural enzymes, fatty acids, micronutrients, macronutrients and vitamins. In contrast to fresh and unprocessed foods, processed foods are guaranteed to be safer, imperishable, long lasting and consist high level of nutrients bioactivity. Currently, the evolution in food processing technologies is necessary to face food security and safety, nutrition demand, its availability and also other global challenges in the food system. In this scenario, this review consists of information on two food processing technologies, which effects on processed foods before and after processing and the impact of food products on human health. It is also very well established that understanding the type and structure of foods to be processed can assist food processing industries towards advancement of novel food products. In connection with this fact, the present article also discusses the emerging trends and possible modifications in food processing technologies with the combination of conventional and modern techniques to get the suitable nutritional and safety qualities in food.

Abstract
NutramilTM Complex is a multicomponent food product that meets the requirements of a food for special medical purpose. As a complete, high-energy diet it consists of properly balanced nutrients, vitamins and minerals. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of NutramilTM Complex on breast and prostate carcinoma cells. Our results showed that NutramilTM Complex reduced the viability and proliferation of breast and prostate cancer cells and that this process was associated with the induction of apoptosis via activation of caspase signalling. Data showed elevated levels of p53 tumour suppressor, up-regulation of p38 MAPK and SAPK / JNK proteins and downregulation of anti-apoptotic ERK1/2, AKT1 and HSP27. Treatment with NutramilTM Complex also affected the expression of the BCL2 family genes. Results also showed down-regulation of anti-apoptotic BCL-2 and up-regulation of pro-apoptotic members such as BAX, BAD, BID. In addition, we also observed regulation of many other genes, including Iκβα, Chk1 and Chk2, associated with apoptotic events. Taken together, our results suggest activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway as most likely mechanism of anti-carcinogenic activity of NutramilTM Complex.

Abstract
There has lately been a renewed interest in Riboflavin owing to insight into its recognition as an essential component of cellular biochemistry. The knowledge of the mechanisms and regulation of intestinal absorption of riboflavin and its health implications has significantly been expanded in recent years. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the importance of riboflavin, its absorption and metabolism in health and diseased conditions, its deficiency and its association with various health diseases, and metabolic disorders. Efforts have been made to review the available information in literature on the relationship between riboflavin and various clinical abnormalities. The role of riboflavin has also been dealt in the prevention of a wide array of health diseases like migraine, anemia, cancer, hyperglycemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and oxidative stress directly or indirectly. The riboflavin deficiency has profound effect on iron absorption, metabolism of tryptophan, mitochondrial dysfunction, gastrointestinal tract, brain dysfunction, and metabolism of other vitamins as well as is associated with skin disorders. Toxicological and photosensitizing properties of riboflavin make it suitable for biological use, such as virus inactivation, excellent photosensitizer, and promising adjuvant in chemo radiotherapy in cancer treatment. A number of recent studies have indicated and highlighted the cellular processes and biological effects associated with riboflavin supplementation in metabolic diseases. Overall, a deeper understanding of these emerging roles of riboflavin intake is essential to design better therapies for future.

Abstract
Clinical practice and experimental studies have shown the necessity of sufficient quantities of folic acid intake for normal embryogenesis and fetal development in the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs) and neurological malformations. So, women of childbearing age must be sure to have an adequate folate intake periconceptionally, prior to and during pregnancy. Folic acid fortification of all enriched cereal grain product flour has been implemented in many countries. Thus, hundreds of thousands of people have been exposed to an increased intake of folic acid. Folate plays an essential role in the biosynthesis of methionine. Methionine is the principal aminopropyl donor required for polyamine biosynthesis, which is up-regulated in actively growing cells, including cancer cells. Folates are important in RNA and DNA synthesis, DNA stability and integrity. Clinical and epidemiological evidence links folate deficiency to DNA damage and cancer. On the other hand, long-term folate oversupplementation leads to adverse toxic effects, resulting in the appearance of malignancy. Considering the relationship of polyamines and rapidly proliferating tissues (especially cancers), there is a need for better investigation of the relationship between the ingestion of high amounts of folic acid in food supplementation and polyamine metabolism, related to malignant processes in the human body.
