Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an emanating threat to humanity's future. The effectiveness of commonly used antibiotics against microbial infections is declining at an alarming rate. As a result, morbidity and mortality rates are soaring, particularly among immunocompromised populations. Exploring alternative solutions, such as medicinal plants and iodine, shows promise in combating resistant pathogens. Such antimicrobials could effectively inhibit microbial proliferation through synergistic combinations. In our study, we prepared a formulation consisting of Aloe barbadensis Miller (AV), Thymol, iodine (I2), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Various analytical methods including SEM/EDS, UV-vis, Raman, FTIR, and XRD were carried out to verify the purity, composition, and morphology of AV-PVP-Thymol-I2. We evaluated the inhibitory effects of this formulation against 10 selected reference strains using impregnated sterile discs, surgical sutures, gauze bandages, surgical face masks, and KN95 masks. The antimicrobial properties of AV-PVP-Thymol-I2 were assessed through disc diffusion methods against 10 reference strains in comparison with two common antibiotics. The 25-month-old formulation exhibited slightly lower inhibitory zones, indicating changes in the sustained-iodine-release reservoir. Our findings confirm AV-PVP-Thymol-I2 as a potent antifungal and antibacterial agent against the reference strains, demonstrating particularly strong inhibitory action on surgical sutures, cotton bandages, and face masks. These results enable the potential use of the formulation AV-PVP-Thymol-I2 as a promising antimicrobial agent against wound infections and as a spray-on contact-killing agent.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to improve the solubility, chemical stability, and in vitro biological activity of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) by forming inclusion complexes with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (Hβ-CD) using the solvent evaporation method. The CAPE contents of the produced complexes were determined, and the complexes with the highest CAPE contents were selected for further characterization. Detailed characterization of inclusion complexes was performed by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). pH and thermal stability studies showed that both selected inclusion complexes exhibited better stability compared to free CAPE. Moreover, their antimicrobial activities were evaluated against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) for the first time. According to the broth dilution assay, complexes with the highest CAPE content (10C/β-CD and 10C/Hβ-CD) exhibited considerable growth inhibition effects against both bacteria, 31.25 μg/mL and 62.5 μg/mL, respectively; contrarily, this value for free CAPE was 500 μg/mL. Furthermore, it was determined that the in vitro antioxidant activity of the complexes increased by about two times compared to free CAPE.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing concern for the future of mankind. Common antibiotics fail in the treatment of microbial infections at an alarming rate. Morbidity and mortality rates increase, especially among immune-compromised populations. Medicinal plants and their essential oils, as well as iodine could be potential solutions against resistant pathogens. These natural antimicrobials abate microbial proliferation, especially in synergistic combinations. We performed a simple, one-pot synthesis to prepare our formulation with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-complexed iodine (I2), Thymus Vulgaris L. (Thyme), and Aloe Barbadensis Miller (AV). SEM/EDS, UV-vis, Raman, FTIR, and XRD analyses verified the purity, composition, and morphology of AV-PVP-Thyme-I2. We investigated the inhibitory action of the bio-formulation AV-PVP-Thyme-I2 against 10 selected reference pathogens on impregnated sterile discs, surgical sutures, cotton gauze bandages, surgical face masks, and KN95 masks. The antimicrobial properties of AV-PVP-Thyme-I2 were studied by disc diffusion methods and compared with those of the antibiotics gentamycin and nystatin. The results confirm AV-PVP-Thyme-I2 as a strong antifungal and antibacterial agent against the majority of the tested microorganisms with excellent results on cotton bandages and face masks. After storing AV-PVP-Thyme-I2 for 18 months, the inhibitory action was augmented compared to the fresh formulation. Consequently, we suggest AV-PVP-Thyme-I2 as an antimicrobial agent against wound infections and a spray-on contact killing agent.

Abstract
Food packaging systems are continually impacted by the growing demand for minimally processed foods, changing eating habits, and food safety risks. Minimally processed foods are prone to the growth of harmful microbes, compromising quality and safety. As a result, the need for improved food shelf life and protection against foodborne diseases alongside consumer preference for minimally processed foods with no or lesser synthetic additives foster the development of innovative technologies such as antimicrobial packaging. It is a form of active packaging that can release antimicrobial substances to suppress the activities of specific microorganisms, thereby improving food quality and safety during long-term storage. However, antimicrobial packaging continues to be a very challenging technology. This study highlights antimicrobial packaging concepts, providing different antimicrobial substances used in food packaging. We review various types of antimicrobial systems. Emphasis is given to the effectiveness of antimicrobial packaging in various food applications, including fresh and minimally processed fruit and vegetables and meat and dairy products. For the development of antimicrobial packaging, several approaches have been used, including the use of antimicrobial sachets inside packaging, packaging films, and coatings incorporating active antimicrobial agents. Due to their antimicrobial activity and capacity to extend food shelf life, regulate or inhibit the growth of microorganisms and ultimately reduce the potential risk of health hazards, natural antimicrobial agents are gaining significant importance and attention in developing antimicrobial packaging systems. Selecting the best antimicrobial packaging system for a particular product depends on its nature, desired shelf life, storage requirements, and legal considerations. The current review is expected to contribute to research on the potential of antimicrobial packaging to extend the shelf life of food and also serves as a good reference for food innovation information.

Abstract
Thymol is a phenol monoterpene with potential antifungal, antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Due to the low water solubility and high volatility of thymol, encapsulation serves as an effective tool during application. In the present study, cyclodextrin (CD)-based metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized using α-CD, β-CD, and γ-CD as organic building blocks, and further complexed with thymol to produce three CD-MOF-THY inclusion complexes (ICs). The encapsulation content, release kinetics and fruit preservation effect of ICs were analyzed. Results showed that thymol was well embedded in γ-CD-MOFs, with the highest encapsulation content of 286.7 ± 8.4 mg/g. Release kinetics revealed that CD-MOFs exhibited a controlled release effect toward thymol for 35 days. The release kinetics of three ICs fit the Rigter-Peppas model well, with γ-CD-MOF-THY showing the lowest release rate constant of 2.85 at 50 °C, RH 75%. Moreover, γ-CD-MOF-THY exhibited a remarkable preservation performance on cherry tomatoes with the lowest decay index (18.75%) and weight loss (5.17%) after 15 days of storage, suggesting this material as a potential fresh-keeping material for fruit and vegetable preservation.

Abstract
Candida albicans is the most frequently isolated opportunistic
pathogen in the female genital tract, with 92.3% of cases in Brazil associated
with vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). Linalool is a monoterpene compound from
plants of the genera Cinnamomum, Coriandrum,
Lavandula, and Citrus that has demonstrated a
fungicidal effect on strains of Candida spp., but its mechanism
of action is still unknown. For this purpose, broth microdilution techniques
were applied, as well as molecular docking in a predictive manner for this
mechanism. The main results of this study indicated that the C.
albicans strains analyzed were resistant to fluconazole and
sensitive to linalool at a dose of 256 µg/mL. Furthermore, the increase in the
minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of linalool in the presence of sorbitol
and ergosterol indicated that this molecule possibly affects the cell wall and
plasma membrane integrity of C. albicans. Molecular docking of
linalool with proteins that are key in the biosynthesis and maintenance of the
cell wall and the fungal plasma membrane integrity demonstrated the possibility
of linalool interacting with three important enzymes: 1,3-β-glucan synthase,
lanosterol 14α-demethylase, and Δ 14-sterol reductase. In
silico analysis showed that this monoterpene has theoretical but
significant oral bioavailability, low toxic potential, and high similarity to
pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the findings of this study indicated that linalool
probably causes damage to the cell wall and plasma membrane of C.
albicans, possibly by interaction with important enzymes involved
in the biosynthesis of these fungal structures, in addition to presenting low
in silico toxic potential.

Abstract
The popularity of plant bioactive ingredients has become increasingly apparent in the food industry. However, these plant bioactive ingredients have many deficiencies, including low water solubility, poor stability, and unacceptable odor. Cyclodextrins (CDs), as cyclic molecules, have been extensively studied as superb vehicles of plant bioactive ingredients. These CD inclusion compounds could be added into various film matrices to fabricate bioactive food packaging materials. Therefore, in the present review, we summarized the extraction methods of plant bioactive ingredients, the addition of these CD inclusion compounds into thin-film materials, and their applications in food packaging. Furthermore, the release model and mechanism of active film materials based on various plant bioactive ingredients with CDs were highlighted. Finally, the current challenges and new opportunities based on these film materials have been discussed.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are a group of cyclic oligosaccharides produced from starch or starch derivatives. They contain six (αCD), seven (βCD), eight (γCD), or more glucopyranose monomers linked via α-1,4-glycosidic bonds. CDs have a truncated cone shape with a hydrophilic outer wall and a less hydrophilic inner wall, the latter forming a more apolar internal cavity. Because of this special architecture, CDs are soluble in water and can simultaneously host lipophilic guest molecules. The major advantage of inclusion into CDs is increased aqueous solubility of such lipophilic substances. Accordingly, we present studies where the complexation of natural compounds such as propolis and dietary plant bioactives (e.g., tocotrienol, pentacyclic triterpenoids, curcumin) with γCD resulted in improved stability, bioavailability, and bioactivity in various laboratory model organisms and in humans. We also address safety aspects that may arise from increased bioavailability of plant extracts or natural compounds owing to CD complexation. When orally administered, α- and βCD—which are inert to intestinal digestion—are fermented by the human intestinal flora, while γCD is almost completely degraded to glucose units by α-amylase. Hence, recent reports indicate that empty γCD supplementation exhibits metabolic activity on its own, which may provide opportunities for new applications.

Abstract
The low solubility and high volatility of perillyl alcohol (POH) compromise its bioavailability and potential use as chemotherapeutic drug. In this work, we have evaluated the anticancer activity of POH complexed with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) using three complexation approaches. Molecular docking suggests the hydrogen-bond between POH and β-cyclodextrin in molar proportion was 1:1. Thermal analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that the POH was enclosed in the β-CD cavity. Also, there was a significant reduction of particle size thereof, indicating a modification of the β-cyclodextrin crystals. The complexes were tested against human L929 fibroblasts after 24 h of incubation showing no signs of cytotoxicity. Concerning the histopathological results, the treatment with POH/β-CD at a dose of 50 mg/kg promoted approximately 60% inhibition of tumor growth in a sarcoma S180-induced mice model and the reduction of nuclear immunoexpression of the Ki67 antigen compared to the control group. Obtained data suggest a significant reduction of cycling cells and tumor proliferation. Our results confirm that complexation of POH/β-CD not only solves the problem related to the volatility of the monoterpene but also increases its efficiency as an antitumor agent.

Abstract
Isopentyl caffeate (ICaf) is a bioactive ester widely distributed in nature. Our patented work has shown promising results of this molecule against Leishmania. However, ICaf shows poor solubility, which limits its usage in clinical settings. In this work, we have proposed the development of an inclusion complex of ICaf in β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), with the aim to improve the drug solubility, and thus, its bioavailability. The inclusion complex (ICaf:β-CD) was developed applying three distinct methods, i.e., physical mixture (PM), kneading (KN) or co-evaporation (CO) in different molar proportions (0.25:1, 1:1 and 2:1). Characterization of the complexes was carried out by thermal analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and molecular docking. The ICaf:β-CD complex in a molar ratio of 1:1 obtained by CO showed the best complexation and, therefore, was selected for further analysis. Solubility assay showed a marked improvement in the ICaf:β-CD (CO, 1:1) solubility profile when compared to the pure ICaf compound. Cell proliferation assay using ICaf:β-CD complex showed an IC50 of 3.8 and 2.7 µg/mL against L. amazonesis and L. chagasi promastigotes, respectively. These results demonstrate the great potential of the inclusion complex to improve the treatment options for visceral and cutaneous leishmaniases.

Abstract
Chitosan is a cationic natural polysaccharide, which has emerged as an increasingly interesting biomaterialover the past few years. It constitutes a novel perspective in drug delivery systems and nanocarriers' formulations due to its beneficial properties, including biocompatibility, biodegradability and low toxicity. The potentiality of chemical or enzymatic modifications of the biopolymer, as well as its complementary use with other polymers, further attract the scientific community, offering improved and combined properties in the final materials. As a result, chitosan has been extensively used as a matrix for the encapsulation of several valuable compounds. In this review article, the advantageous character of chitosan as a matrix for nanosystemsis presented, focusing on the encapsulation of natural products. A five-year literature review is attempted covering the use of chitosan and modified chitosan as matrices and coatings for the encapsulation of natural extracts, essential oils or pure naturally occurring bioactive compounds are discussed.

Abstract
Developing natural preservatives for wood protection is of great interest in sustainable construction and green building industries. This study was designed to determine the feasibility of using methyl-β-cyclodextrin-essential oils (MβCD-EOs) complexes as potential bio-based preservatives for wood protection. Four essential oils (EOs) with proven antifungal properties, eugenol (EG), trans-cinnamaldehyde (CN), thymol (TM) and carvacrol (CV), were complexed with methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) by a co-precipitation method. The inclusion of EOs in MβCD and the corresponding inclusion yield of the MβCD-EOs complexes were determined by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV/Vis), respectively. The maximum inclusion yields in MβCD-EG, MβCD-CN, MβCD-CV, and MβCD-TM were estimated to be almost 100%. MβCD-EOs complexes were impregnated into southern pine wood blocks and exposed to two brown rot fungi, Gloeophyllum trabeum and Postia placenta, following procedures described in AWPA Standard E22 and E10. The penetration of MβCD-EOs complexes in wood was confirmed by fluorescence microscopic analysis after the selective dyeing of EOs encapsulated in MβCD. In comparison to the control wood samples, MβCD-EOs complexes treated wood exhibited a significant reduction in the mass loss from 16-36% to 2-18%, accompanied by improvement in radial compression strength loss from 81-92% to 29-67% after four-week fungi exposure.

Abstract
Aims: The aim was to improve the absorption and bioavailability of [6]-shogaol with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) prior to in vitro and in vivo evaluation. Methods: [6]-Shogaol/β-CDs inclusion complexes (6-S-β-CDs) were developed using saturated aqueous solution method and characterised with appropriate techniques. The absorption and bioavailability potential of [6]-shogaol was evaluated via in vivo pharmacokinetics and in situ intestinal perfusion. Results: The results of characterisation showed that 6-S-β-CDs (drug loading, 7.15%) were successfully formulated. In vitro release study indicated significantly improved [6]-shogaol release. Pharmacokinetic parameters such as Cmax, AUC0-36 h, and oral relative bioavailability (about 685.36%) were substantially enhanced. The in situ intestinal perfusion study revealed that [6]-shogaol was markedly absorbed via passive diffusion in the intestinal segments, and duodenum followed by ileum and jejunum. Conclusions: Cyclodextrin inclusion technology could enhance the intestinal absorption and oral bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs like [6]-shogaol.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing toolbox that provides solutions to numerous challenges in the food industry and meet public demands for healthier and safer food products. The diversity of nanostructures and their vast, tunable functionality drives their inclusion in food products and packaging materials to improve their nutritional quality through bioactive fortification and probiotics encapsulation, enhance their safety due to their antimicrobial and sensing capabilities and confer novel sensorial properties. In this food nanotechnology state-of-the-art communication, matrix materials with particular focus on food-grade components, existing and novel production techniques, and current and potential applications in the fields of food quality, safety and preservation, nutrient bioaccessibility and digestibility will be detailed. Additionally, a thorough analysis of potential strategies to assess the safety of these novel nanostructures is presented.
