Abstract
Considerable evidence suggests couple relationship education (CRE) programs are effective in improving couples' relationship functioning, yet few studies have examined the implications of CRE programs on indicators of physical health despite substantial research supporting links between relational and physical health. This study utilized a sample of 308 couples randomly assigned to a CRE curriculum to explore the dyadic links between conflict management and self-care skills (emphasized in CRE), stress, and sleep dysfunction concurrently. We prospectively tested whether changes in skills drove changes in sleep dysfunction or vice versa, for both self and partner. Results from a series of structural equation models indicated indirect links for men and women between conflict management and self-care skills and sleep dysfunction through lower stress level at program start. Dyadically, men's and women's better conflict management skills were associated with partners' lower stress, which was in turn associated with partners' lower sleep dysfunction. Men's better self-care skills were linked with partners' lower stress levels, which were linked with partners' lower sleep dysfunction. Tests of dyadic prospective cross-lagged effects among changes in sleep and changes in skills indicated that initial improvements in both partners' sleep predicted improvements in their own conflict management skills 1 year later. Initial improvements in women's conflict management skills predicted reduced sleep dysfunction for themselves. Additionally, for both partners, early changes in self-care predicted later reductions in sleep dysfunction. Dyadically, immediate improvements in men's self-care predicted reduced sleep dysfunction for their partner a year later. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We investigated intrafamilial sleep evolution by identifying children's sleep multitrajectory groups between 3- and 60-month of age and their association with parental sleep multitrajectory groups. METHODS We included 180 children from the SEPAGES cohort (Grenoble, France) whose parents belonged to previously identified sleep multitrajectory groups, through group-based multitrajectory modeling, between 3 and 36months postpartum, using nighttime (NSD) and weekend daytime (DSD) sleep durations and subjective sleep loss, comprising "No," "Subjective," and "Global" sleep problems groups. Child sleep information (NSD, DSD, subjective sleep loss, night waking, and sleep onset difficulties) was collected by parental questionnaires at 3-, 12-, 36-, and 60-month. We identified sleep multitrajectory groups using group-based multitrajectory modeling in children and examined their associations with parental sleep multitrajectory groups using multinomial logistic regressions. RESULTS We identified three sleep multitrajectory groups in children: the "No/few" group (29.4%) had moderate NSD, long DSD, low subjective sleep loss/night waking/sleep onset difficulties prevalence, the "Moderate" group (60.0%) had long NSD and moderate DSD, and medium subjective sleep loss/night waking/sleep onset difficulties prevalence, and the "Global" group (10.6%) had the shortest NSD and DSD, and the highest subjective sleep loss/night waking/sleep onset difficulties prevalence. After adjusting for covariates, mothers in the "Global" group were more likely to have children in the same group, and mothers in "Subjective" and "Global" groups were less likely to have children in the "Moderate" group than in the "No/few" group. No association was identified with paternal or couple sleep multitrajectory groups. CONCLUSIONS The observed associations between parent-child sleep multitrajectory groups suggest greater maternal sensitivity to or involvement in the child's sleep than the fathers. Early preventive sleep actions could improve sleep in children and mothers.

Abstract
Although a significant body of research has revealed associations between romantic relationship experiences and sleep quality, there has not been clarity regarding the mechanisms underlying such associations. Toward this end, we review the existing studies that have tested mechanisms linking romantic relationship experiences to sleep quality. Guided by both theory and existing research, we organize our review around five key categories of mechanisms that may explain associations between romantic relationship experiences and sleep quality: emotional/affective responses, self-perceptions, social perceptions, self-regulation, and biological functioning. Our review of the literature indicates strong evidence in support of the mediating effects of emotional/affective mechanisms (e.g. emotions and mood states) in explaining associations between various aspects of romantic relationships (e.g. relationship satisfaction, partner conflicts, and attachment orientation) and sleep quality. Although there is ample theoretical support for the other mechanisms proposed, and although all proposed mechanisms have been separately linked to both romantic relationship experiences and sleep quality, few studies have directly tested them, pointing to profitable directions for future research. Understanding underlying mechanisms will enable the development of wise, process-based interventions that target specific mechanisms to improve couple members' sleep quality and romantic relationship functioning.

Abstract
As people age, their sleep patterns and needs naturally change in response to developmental and health-related factors. However, attaining sufficient restorative sleep remains crucial for overall well-being in older adults. This manuscript provides an overview of common sleep alterations that tend to emerge with advancing age, such as shifts in circadian rhythms, decreases in deeper sleep stages, fragmented sleep architecture and an association between comorbidities and sleep disruption. Practical recommendations that target environmental, behavioral and lifestyle modifications may optimize sleep initiation, maintenance, and duration for the older population. By enhancing understanding of the sleep changes that occur in the aged population, geriatric nurses are better able to provide respectful, patient-centered care to older adults that are experiencing sleep difficulties.

Abstract
Although prior research demonstrates the interdependence of sleep quality within couples (i.e., the sleep of one partner affects the sleep of the other), little is known about the degree to which couples' sleep hygiene behaviours are concordant or discordant, and if one's own sleep hygiene or their report of their partners' sleep hygiene is related to worse relational, psychological, and sleep outcomes. In a sample of 143 mixed-gender, bed-sharing couples, each partner completed an online questionnaire consisting of the Sleep Hygiene Index (for themselves and their partner), PROMIS sleep disturbance scale, conflict frequency, PHQ-4 for anxiety and depressive symptoms, and the Perceived Stress Scale. Paired samples t-tests between partners were conducted using total and individual-item Sleep Hygiene Index scores to examine similarities and differences. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) scores of dyadic reports were conducted to examine the level of agreement between each partner's sleep hygiene. Finally, we examined associations between one's own sleep hygiene and their report of their partner's sleep hygiene with both partner's sleep quality, emotional distress, and conflict frequency in a dyadic structural equation model with important covariates and alternative model tests. The results revealed a significant difference between men's (M = 14.45, SD = 7.41) and women's total score self-report sleep hygiene ([M = 17.67, SD = 8.27]; t(142) = -5.06, p < 0.001) and partners only had similar sleep hygiene for 5 out of the 13 items. Examining dyadic reports of sleep hygiene revealed that partners had moderate agreement on their partners' sleep hygiene (0.69-0.856). The results from the dyadic structural equation model revealed that poorer sleep hygiene was associated with one's own poor sleep quality, higher emotional distress, and more frequent relational conflict. For both men and women a poorer report of a partner's sleep hygiene was associated with one's own report of higher relationship conflict. Finally, men's poorer report of a partner's sleep hygiene was related better to their own sleep quality but was related to poorer sleep quality for their partners. These results have implications for sleep promotion and intervention efforts as well as for couple relationship functioning.

Abstract
Objective We investigated maternal and paternal sleep evolution from 3 to 36 months postpartum, their interrelations and predictors in the SEPAGES cohort. Methods Sleep information (night sleep duration [NSD], weekend daytime sleep duration [DSD] and subjective sleep loss [SSL]) was collected by self-administered questionnaires at 3, 18, 24 and 36 months postpartum in the SEPAGES French cohort that included 484 mothers and 410 fathers. Group-based multi-trajectory modelling was used to identify maternal, paternal and couple sleep multi-trajectory groups among 188 couples reporting sleep data for at least 2 time points. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess associations between parental sleep multi-trajectories and early characteristics such as sociodemographic, chronotypes, child sex, birth seasonality or breastfeeding duration. Results We identified three maternal (M1-M3), paternal (F1-F3) and couple (C1-C3) sleep multi-trajectory groups with similar characteristics: a group with short NSD and high SSL prevalence (M1, F2, C2), a group with long NSD but medium SSL prevalence (M2, F3, C3) and a group with long NSD and low SSL prevalence (M3, F1, C1). Mothers with the shortest NSD (M1) were less likely to have a partner with long NSD (F2). As compared with long NSD and low SSL prevalence (C1), couples with short NSD and high SSL prevalence (C2) were less likely to have had a first child born in the autumn and fathers in C2 had a later chronotype. Conclusion We identified distinct sleep multi-trajectory groups for mothers, fathers and couples from 3- to 36-month postpartum. Sleep patterns within couples were homogeneous.

Abstract
Objective Although the negative effects of shift work on workers' sleep and mood are well-known, the effects of shift work on their sleep partners' sleep and mood have rarely been investigated. The current study explored the effects of co-sleeping with a shift worker (SW) on the partner's subjective sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, depressive symptoms, and cognitive disturbances. Methods Online sleep and work-environment self-report questionnaires (e.g., including the presence of co-sleepers, work schedules of the co-sleepers, and their work schedules) were administered. The questionnaires also included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ), and the short-term Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D). Participants consisted of co-sleepers of SWs (n = 657), co-sleepers of non-SWs (n = 2186), and solo sleepers (n = 2432). Results Significant between-group differences in the PSQI, ESS, CFQ, and CES-D were observed after controlling for age, gender, work shift, and parenting (p < 0.001). Co-sleepers of SWs showed higher PSQI, ESS, CFQ, and CES-D scores than co-sleepers of non-SWs and solo sleepers. Solo sleepers reported significantly higher PSQI and CES-D scores than co-sleepers of non-SWs. The PSQI, ESS, CFQ, and CES-D scores were significantly correlated in all groups. The association between the ESS and PSQI was stronger in co-sleepers of SWs than in solo sleepers. The association between the ESS and CES-D was stronger in co-sleepers of SWs than in solo sleepers. Conclusions Co-sleeping with SWs is associated with poor sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, depressive symptoms, and cognitive disturbances in the partner.

Abstract
Spouses may affect each other's sleeping behaviour. In 47,420 spouse-pairs from the UK Biobank, we found a weak positive phenotypic correlation between spouses for self-reported sleep duration (r = 0.11; 95% CI = 0.10, 0.12) and a weak inverse correlation for chronotype (diurnal preference) (r = -0.11; -0.12, -0.10), which replicated in up to 127,035 23andMe spouse-pairs. Using accelerometer data on 3454 UK Biobank spouse-pairs, the correlation for derived sleep duration was similar to self-report (r = 0.12; 0.09, 0.15). Timing of diurnal activity was positively correlated (r = 0.24; 0.21, 0.27) in contrast to the inverse correlation for chronotype. In Mendelian randomization analysis, positive effects of sleep duration (mean difference=0.13; 0.04, 0.23 SD per SD) and diurnal activity (0.49; 0.03, 0.94) were observed, as were inverse effects of chronotype (-0.15; -0.26, -0.04) and snoring (-0.15; -0.27, -0.04). Findings support the notion that an individual's sleep may impact that of their partner, promoting opportunities for sleep interventions at the family-level.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Poor sleep quality has been frequently observed in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. In the present study, we analyzed the presence of poor sleep quality in a sample of Mexican individuals with rheumatoid arthritis; then, we compared sociodemographic and clinical characteristics among patients to determine risk factors for poor sleep quality. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 102 individuals with rheumatoid arthritis from a hospital in Mexico. We evaluated disease activity (DAS28), quality of sleep using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the presence of depression and anxiety with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. We performed a Chi-square test and a t-test. Then, we performed a logistic regressions model of the associated features in a univariable analysis. Results: Poor sleep quality was observed in 41.75% of the individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. Being married was a proactive factor (OR 0.04, 95% CI 0.1-0.9, p = 0.04), whereas having one's hips affected or presenting with anxiety and depression was associated with poor sleep quality (OR 4.6, 95% CI 1.2-17.69, p = 0.02). After a multivariate analysis, having anxiety (OR 5.0, 95% CI 1.4-17.7, p < 0.01) and depression (OR 9.2, 95% CI 1.0-8.1, p < 0.01) remained associated with a higher risk of having poor sleep quality. Other clinical characteristics among patients were not significantly different. Conclusions: Our results showed that individuals with rheumatoid arthritis who also presented with depression or anxiety had a higher risk of suffering from poor sleep quality. However, more studies with larger samples are necessary to replicate these results in the Mexican population.

Abstract
Background Marital status is a robust sociodemographic predictor of sleep. Having to live apart from spouse may have different implications than those of cohabitants or singles, especially in military personnel. Further research on this group will help provide knowledge in advance and facilitate early targeted interventions. Methods An online questionnaire study was conducted from July to November 2021. A total of 1,832 male military personnel completed the questionnaire. The marital status was measured by a self-reported single choice question. Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and The Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about sleep scale (DBAS-16) were used to measure sleep-related outcomes. Inverse probability weighting (IPW) was applied to reduce the effects of confounding. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between marital status and sleep and explore the impact of living together or not. Results After inverse probability weighting, the prevalence of poor sleep quality, sleepiness and dysfunctional beliefs were 16.1, 20.1 and 7.1%, respectively. One-way ANOVA results for the means of both groups were statistically significantly different, except for the sleep latency and sleep disturbance dimensions of PSQI. Participants who were married were more likely to have poor sleep quality (OR: 1.408, 95% CI: [1.10, 1.80]), to have daytime sleepiness (OR: 1.560, 95% CI: [1.27, 1.92]) and to develop dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes (OR: 2.497, 95% CI: [1.65, 3.80]) than those who were unmarried. Further analysis showed that the odds of developing poor sleep quality and DBAS in participants who married but living apart were significantly bigger than those unmarried (OR: 1.548 and 3.991, respectively.), while there were no significant differences in the odds of daytime sleepiness (OR: 0.738, p = 0.050). Age was a protective factor for the development of bad sleep outcomes, while family economic was an independent risk factor. Conclusion Marital status appear important for sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and sleep beliefs. The effect of living apart or not should be considered separately as an important predictor of sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep has a major impact on health, which makes it a relevant topic for research and health practitioners. Research on sleep determinants, i.e. factors that positively or negatively influence sleep, is fragmented. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this umbrella review is to provide an overview of the current evidence on determinants of natural adult sleep. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was performed on determinants of sleep. Reviews and meta-analyses on natural adult sleep were included. Six electronic databases (PubMed, WoS, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo and Cochrane) were used for the search, last accessed September 2021. The quality of the selected articles was assessed using the AMSTAR2 tool. Results were categorized in four main categories: biological, behavioral, environmental and personal/socio-economical determinants. RESULTS In total 93 reviews and meta-analyses resulted in a total of 30 identified determinants. The impact of each determinant differs per individual and per situation. Each determinant was found to affect different sleep parameters and the relationship with sleep is influenced by both generic and specific moderators. DISCUSSION A comprehensive overview on relevant sleep determinants provides a practical and scientifically based starting point to identify relevant intervention approaches to secure or improve individual sleep quality. The difference in aggregation level of the determinants and in measurement methods are the major limitations of this umbrella review. Extending existing generic sleep hygiene rules with an overview of all types of potential determinants will enhance the awareness of the complexity and can be used to improve the effect of sleep interventions in health promotion. Abstract
The current study included an examination of social factors that mitigate or exacerbate insomnia symptoms among older adults who are married or living with a partner. We first examined the unique effects of spousal support and strain on insomnia symptoms and then evaluated the degree to which extramarital social factors (e.g., friend support) moderated spousal influences. Data came from Waves 2 and 3 of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project. Our sample consisted of 495 participants who were either married or cohabitating with a partner (M age in years = 69.84, SD = 8.08). Spousal strain-but not support-predicted higher insomnia symptoms 5 years later. Spousal influences on sleep, however, were moderated by extramarital factors in nuanced ways. Findings highlight the importance of taking into account older adults' wider social context when examining the ways in which sleep is sensitive to positive and negative aspects of marital quality.

Abstract
Touch associated with sleep (sleep-touch; reported physical contact during or shortly before/after sleep) is underexplored as a distinct contributor to affect regulatory processes associated with adult sleep. Given the affect-regulating effects of interpersonal touch, we theorized that among healthy co-sleeping adults, sleep-touch would add to sleep-related effects on affective "resetting," resulting in the experience of calmer, more regulated states. We studied 210 married heterosexual couples (aged 20-67 years, 79% non-Hispanic white, 13% Latinx) assigned 14 days of twice-daily (morning/evening) sleep/mood diaries. Multilevel daily (within-couple) mediation analyses showed that as hypothesized, more reported sleep-touch was associated with happier/calmer and less angry/irritable morning mood. In turn, happier/calmer mood was associated with greater enjoyment of time with spouse (for both spouses). Sleep-touch also was linked directly to both evening positive spousal events and enjoyment ratings. Sleep-touch was associated indirectly with fewer negative spousal events and less spouse-related stress via less angry/irritable morning mood (both spouses). Further, wives' sleep-touch was related to happier/calmer husband mood and evening enjoyment; husbands' sleep-touch was unrelated to wives' reports. All associations with sleep-touch were present while accounting for subjective sleep quality, prior evening mood, non-sleep-related physical affection, day in study, and weekend versus weekday. We speculate that among relatively healthy satisfied couples, physical touch during and surrounding sleep may add to sleep's restorative and affect-regulatory functions, suggesting a pathway through which co-sleeping can improve affect regulation and ultimately relationships and health.

Abstract
The aims of the present prospective clinical study were to determine objective, sensor-measured adherence to a mandibular advancement device (MAD) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and to identify partner-specific adherence-related factors. A total of 77 eligible participants with mild, moderate, or severe OSA and who were non-adherent to continuous positive airway pressure (mean age 56.2 years) participated in the study (32.5% women). The mean (range) observation time between MAD delivery and final follow-up was 8.3 (3.4-16.5) months. The mean apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was 26.6 events/hr at baseline and 12.5 events/hr at the 8-month follow-up (both p < 0.001). The mean sensor-measured adherence at the 8-month follow-up was 60.1% for ≥4 hr/night of appliance use for ≥5 days/week. Average usage was 6.4 hr/night, when worn. The mean reduction in the AHI was significantly greater in the "good adherence" (Δ 17.4) than the "poor adherence" group (Δ11.0; p < 0.05). From the partner's perspective, the appliance had a positive effect on sharing a bedroom in the good- (55%) compared to the poor-adherence group (25%; p < 0.05) and on their relationship (51.7% versus 17.9%, respectively; p < 0.05). Regression analyses identified the partner's snoring and apneas to be the most significant factor predicting good adherence to MAD (odds ratio 4.4, 95% confidence interval 1.4-14.0). In conclusion, social factors, like partner perceptions, were positively associated with adherence, which indicate that partner's attitudes and support may be a resource that can be utilised to improve adherence in oral appliance treatment of OSA.

Abstract
Objective.When recording a subject in an at-home environment for sleep evaluation or for other breathing disorder diagnoses using non-contact microphones, the breathing recordings (audio signals) can be distorted by sounds such as TV, outside noise, or air-conditioners. If two people are sleeping together, both may produce breathing/snoring sounds that need to be separated. In this study, we present signal processing and source separation algorithms for the enhancement of individual breathing/snoring audio signals in a simulated environment.Approach.We developed a computer simulation of mixed signals derived from genuine nocturnal recordings of 110 subjects. Two main source separation approaches were tested: (1) changing the basis vectors for the mixtures in the time domain (principal and independent component analysis, PCA/ICA) and (2) converting the mixtures to their time-frequency representations (degenerate un-mixing estimation technique, DUET). In addition to these source separation techniques, a beamforming approach was tested.Main results.The separation results with a reverberation time of 0.15 s and zero SNR between signals showed good performance (mean source to interference ratio (SIR): DUET = 12.831 dB, ICA = 3.388 dB, PCA = 4.452 dB), and for beamforming (SIR = -0.304 dB). To evaluate our source separation results, we propose two new measures: an evaluation measure based on a spectral similarity score (mel-SID) between the target source and its estimation (after separation) and a breathing energy ratio measure (BER). The results with the new proposed measures yielded comparable conclusions (mel-SID: DUET = 1.320, ICA = 2.732, PCA = 1.927, and beamforming = 2.590, BER: DUET = 10.241 dB, ICA = 0.270 dB, PCA = -2.847 dB, and beamforming = -1.151 dB), but better differentiated the differences between the performance of the algorithms. The DUET is superior on all measures. Its main advantage is that it only uses two microphones for separation.Significance. The separated audio signal can thus contribute to a more informed diagnosis of sleep-related and non-sleep-related diseases. The Institutional Review Committee of Soroka University Medical Center approved this study protocol (protocol number 10141) and all methods were performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations.

Abstract
This study aimed to understand how marital status and marital transitions were related to sleep quality in mid to late life and whether these findings differed by gender. Data from 2,872 participants 50-74 years old from the ORANJ BOWLSM, a longitudinal panel study in New Jersey, were used. Marital status and sleep quality were examined in two waves that were approximately 10 years apart. Individuals in a significant romantic relationship and women had worse sleep quality than those in other marital status groups and men. Compared to individuals who remained married, individuals who remained divorced or widowed or who became widowed had better sleep quality, whereas those who became divorced had worse sleep quality; individuals who transitioned into marriage had better sleep quality than those who remained divorced or widowed. Marital status and gender appear important for at least some indices of sleep quality, an important predictor of late-life health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bed sharing is common practice across the global population. However, the vast majority of research on bed sharing has focused solely on mother-infant bed sharing. METHODS Here, we provide a holistic review of research on bed sharing. Articles investigating the relationship between bed sharing and sleep were identified in 4 dyad categories: (1) parent and child, (2) couples, (3) siblings, and (4) pet owners and pets. Of interest was whether sleep-promoting factors such as psychological comfort were generalizable across bed-sharing dyads; alternatively, sleep-demoting factors such as movement or heat may be commonalities. RESULTS We found that, across dyad types, in general, subjective reports of sleep quality were better when bed sharing despite generally worse objective measures of sleep. CONCLUSIONS Understanding bed sharing is important to treating sleep disturbances, given the prevalence of shared beds. This scoping review points to critical gaps in our understanding of bed sharing that motivate future research.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown individuals with evening chronotype to have a greater likelihood for depression (self-reported and clinical ratings), especially in young adults. However, the mechanisms for this relationship remain unknown. Low levels of social support may be a plausible mechanism: young adults with evening chronotypes are awake when others are sleeping, which may lead to feelings of isolation or low support. This study examined links between chronotype, depression, and social support in relationship subtypes within a group of university student athletes. Data were obtained from 189 NCAA Division-I student athletes across all sports. Chronotype was assessed with the Circadian Energy Scale and ranged from -2 (definitely morning type) to +2 (definitely evening type). Depressive symptoms were assessed with Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale. Social support was assessed with the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, which included subscales for Family, Friends, and Significant Other. A subscale for Team was created using the items from the Friends subscale (changing the word "friends" to "teammates"). Regression analyses adjusted for age, sex, and minority status. More evening chronotype was associated with higher reported depressive symptoms (p = .018), lower overall perceived social support (p = .001), and lower perceived social support specifically provided by family (p < .0001), friends (p < .0001), and teammates (p = .014). However, more evening chronotype was associated with higher depressive symptoms for higher, but not lower perceived social support from significant other. Moreover, chronotype-by-support interactions on depressive symptoms were observed; the statistical relationship between chronotype and depression was evident only in those with low (but not high) social support from friends and teammates. These data suggest that having a more evening chronotype may be associated with social isolation, and decreased opportunities for interactions with friends and teammates. This may contribute to the long-standing circadian association seen with depression in college student-athletes. Interventions aimed at increasing university support networks may reduce the impact of depression in students self-identifying with later chronotypes and sleep schedules.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Sleep problems are a public health burden and have adverse health consequences in older adults. Despite sleep being a shared biological process between couples, to date there have not been any studies that have assessed the association between retirement and sleep, in older couples. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of retirement on diagnosed sleep problems in older Dutch couples. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS This study used data from two waves of the NIDI Pension Panel Study for older Dutch adults living with a partner (n= 3,726). Logistic regression models examined the strength of association between retirement and sleep problems, while accounting for the moderating role of relationship characteristics. RESULTS Retirement was associated with decreased odds of sleep problems at wave 2 (OR= 0.60, 95%CI=0.46-0.78). Lower relationship quality was associated with increased odds of sleep problems in the fully adjusted model (OR=1.81, 95%CI=1.32-2.49). Having a partner with sleep problems was associated with increased risk of sleep problems as well (OR=1.51, 95%CI=1.07-2.13). There was evidence of effect modification by relationship quality (OR= 1.87, 95%CI =1.05-3.31). DISCISSION AND IMPLICATIONS Retirement and sleep do not occur in a social vacuum and have implications beyond the individual level. More research is therefore needed to understand the impact of sleep and its health consequences on older coupled workers. Such research may provide valuable insights for management and treatment of sleep problems and may have implications for public health of aging communities.

Abstract
Over the past decade, research linking sleep and social relationships has burgeoned. Researchers across the globe are trying to understand whether the quality and quantity of our social relationships matter for sleep, and vice versa. We conducted a systematic review of the literature, identifying over 200 relevant articles examining sleep and social relationships in healthy populations. Here, we summarize our findings by reviewing 1) links between sleep and broad social ties across the lifespan, and 2) links between sleep and specific social relationships identified in the literature search, including romantic relationships, family relationships, and work relationships. Taken together, the literature provides evidence that the quality and presence of social relationships, especially our closest relationships, play a role in how we sleep. Likewise, sleep appears to influence our social bonds. However, the majority of work is correlational, limiting conclusions about the directionality of these effects. We conclude by synthesizing the findings, considering the limitations of the present literature, and identifying key future directions for this emerging area of research.

Abstract
The prospective Ulm-SPATZ study was investigated to assess the role of child sleeping quality between 4 to 6 years of age in affecting a partner's sleeping and relationship satisfaction within a couple. The study was conducted using a triadic approach in which the child was included in the Actor-Partner-Interdependence Model (APIM). Sleeping quality of the child was determined by using the German version of the children's sleep habits questionnaire, sleeping features of the parents were assessed by using the Munich chronotype questionnaire, and the partner relationship assessment was performed by employing the German version of the parenting stress index questionnaire. In 211 German triads, we observed that sleeping characteristics and partner relationship scores at different child ages are consistent for both men and women. Higher and statistically significant sleep duration, time spent in bed, the midpoint of sleep, time getting out of bed, and sleep onset in women compared to men during the working days were observed. The APIM analyses showed a significant direct effect of child sleep quality on the partner relationship satisfaction. In women, a mediated effect of child sleep quality acted through sleep duration and time spent in bed on the partner relationship satisfaction score during both free and working days. In men, low child sleep quality was found to be associated with increased sleep onset during both free and working days. Child sleep quality influences relationship satisfaction mostly in mothers, likely because of their higher involvement in childcare during working days. Distress in the couple could be counteracted by a major involvement of the fathers in child management.

Abstract
Several strands of research indicate that work competes for time with sleep, but to what extent the timing and duration of sleep is affected by work is not known. Retirement offers a quasi-experimental life transition to study this in a within-individual study design. The few existing studies report that people sleep longer and later after retirement but mainly rely on self-reported data or between-individual analyses. We recruited 100 participants aged 61-72 years who were in paid work but would soon retire and measured them in a baseline week with accelerometers, diaries and questionnaires. After 1 and 2 years, the measurements were repeated for the now retired participants. Changes in sleep duration, timing, efficiency, chronotype and social jetlag were analysed using multilevel modelling. Gender, chronotype at baseline and partner's working status were analysed as potential effect modifiers. Sleep duration increased by 21 min, whereas sleep efficiency remained similar. Time of sleep onset and final awakening were postponed by 26 and 52 min, respectively, pushing midsleep forward from 03:17 to 03:37 hours. Changes in duration and timing of sleep were driven by weekday sleep, whereas weekend sleep stayed about the same. Social jetlag decreased but still occurred after retirement. Changes at retirement in sleep duration and timing were smaller for participants with a later chronotype and who had full-time working partners. These findings indicate that paid work generates sleep loss and hinders people from sleeping in line with their biological time.

Abstract
Simple Summary Humans commonly share their beds with companion animals, yet little is known regarding how pets impact sleep. In survey-based studies, pet owners report that their dogs favorably affect sleep quality, but prior actigraphy-based studies of human-dog co-sleeping have concluded the practice can lead to sleep arousals and disturbances and, thus, reduce sleep efficiency (i.e., the ratio of time spent asleep in a night as compared to the time spent in bed). We examined actigraphy data from women and dogs and sleep diary data to investigate the apparent disconnect between objective and subjective reports regarding dogs’ effects on sleep. We also analyzed data minute-by-minute to assess whether dog movement impacted the likelihood the human would transition from an inactive to active state. We found associations between human and dog movement over sleep periods and that dogs influenced human movement more than humans influenced dog movement. Humans were largely unaware of their dog’s nighttime movements, and they rarely reported that their dog awakened them during the night. Additional research on more diverse samples and studies that use polysomnography and behavioral observations are necessary for developing a better understanding of how pets affect the quality of human sleep. Abstract Humans regularly enter into co-sleeping arrangements with human and non-human partners. Studies of adults who co-sleep report that co-sleeping can impact sleep quality, particularly for women. Although dog owners often choose to bedshare with their dogs, we know relatively little about the nature of these relationships, nor the extent to which co-sleeping might interfere with sleep quality or quantity. In an effort to rectify this, we selected a sample of 12 adult female human (M = 50.8 years) and dog dyads, and monitored their activity using actigraphy. We collected movement data in one-minute epochs for each sleep period for an average of 10 nights per participant. This resulted in 124 nights of data, covering 54,533 observations (M = 7.3 hours per night). In addition, we collected subjective sleep diary data from human participants. We found a significant positive relationship between human and dog movement over sleep periods, with dogs influencing human movement more than humans influenced dog movement. Dog movement accompanied approximately 50% of human movement observations, and dog movement tripled the likelihood of the human transitioning from a non-moving state to a moving state. Nevertheless, humans rarely reported that their dog disrupted their sleep. We encourage the continued exploration of human-animal co-sleeping in all its facets and provide recommendations for future research in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Sharing the bed with a partner is common among adults and impacts sleep quality with potential implications for mental health. However, hitherto findings are contradictory and particularly polysomnographic data on co-sleeping couples are extremely rare. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of a bed partner's presence on individual and dyadic sleep neurophysiology. METHODS Young healthy heterosexual couples underwent sleep-lab-based polysomnography of two sleeping arrangements: individual sleep and co-sleep. Individual and dyadic sleep parameters (i.e., synchronization of sleep stages) were collected. The latter were assessed using cross-recurrence quantification analysis. Additionally, subjective sleep quality, relationship characteristics, and chronotype were monitored. Data were analyzed comparing co-sleep vs. individual sleep. Interaction effects of the sleeping arrangement with gender, chronotype, or relationship characteristics were moreover tested. RESULTS As compared to sleeping individually, co-sleeping was associated with about 10% more REM sleep, less fragmented REM sleep (p = 0.008), longer undisturbed REM fragments (p = 0.0006), and more limb movements (p = 0.007). None of the other sleep stages was significantly altered. Social support interacted with sleeping arrangement in a way that individuals with suboptimal social support showed the biggest impact of the sleeping arrangement on REM sleep. Sleep architectures were more synchronized between partners during co-sleep (p = 0.005) even if wake phases were excluded (p = 0.022). Moreover, sleep architectures are significantly coupled across a lag of ± 5min. Depth of relationship represented an additional significant main effect regarding synchronization, reflecting a positive association between the two. Neither REM sleep nor synchronization was influenced by gender, chronotype, or other relationship characteristics. CONCLUSION Depending on the sleeping arrangement, couple's sleep architecture and synchronization show alterations that are modified by relationship characteristics. We discuss that these alterations could be part of a self-enhancing feedback loop of REM sleep and sociality and a mechanism through which sociality prevents mental illness.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Sleep disturbances are increasing in prevalence in North America. There is growing evidence that poor sleep quality and short sleep duration may adversely affect circadian rhythms, which in turn may affect female reproduction. The objective of this review is to evaluate recent literature on the association between sleep disturbances and female reproduction. RECENT FINDINGS There is accumulating evidence that sleep quality and duration are important for female reproduction, but epidemiologic research is limited. Recent studies provide suggestive evidence that sleep disorders are associated with increased menstrual irregularity, subfertility/infertility, and poor pregnancy and birth outcomes. Mechanisms underlying these associations are likely to be multifactorial and complex. In addition to genetics, circadian disruption may impact reproductive outcomes through dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and systemic inflammation. Recommendations for future studies include: use of prospective study designs; assessment of populations not already experiencing reproductive disorders; more detailed and accurate assessments of sleep such as validated self-reported measures or objective sleep measures (e.g. actigraphy); comprehensive assessment of potential confounders and mediators; and elucidation of biologic mechanisms. SUMMARY There is a growing body of literature showing evidence that sleep disturbances influence female reproduction, although further epidemiologic research is needed.

Abstract
Introduction Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a widely prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder, which leads to several life-threatening diseases. OSA has systemic effects on various organ systems. Untreated OSA is associated with long-term health consequences including hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, depression, metabolic disorders, and stroke. In addition, untreated OSA is reported to be associated with cognitive dysfunction, impaired productivity at the workplace and in an increased risk of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) resulting in injury and fatality. Other consequences of OSA include, but are not limited to, impaired vigilance, daytime somnolence, performance deficits, morning headaches, mood disturbances, neurobehavioral impairments, and general malaise. Additionally, OSA has become an economic burden on most health systems all over the world. Many driving license regulations have been developed to reduce MVAs among OSA patients. Methods Studies of the personal, societal, public health, and legal aspects of OSA are reviewed. Data were collected through the following databases: MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Scopus, SAGE Research Methods, and ScienceDirect. Conclusion OSA leads to worsening of patients' personal relationships, decreasing work productivity, and increasing occupational accidents as well as MVAs. The costs of undiagnosed and untreated OSA to healthcare organizations are excessive. Thus, proper management of OSA will benefit not only the patient but will also provide widespread benefits to the society as a whole.

Abstract
Human physiological systems have a major role in maintenance of internal stability. Previous studies have found that these systems are regulated by various types of interactions associated with physiological homeostasis. However, whether there is any interaction between these systems in different individuals is not well-understood. The aim of this research was to determine whether or not there is any interaction between the physiological systems of independent individuals in an environment where they are connected with one another. We investigated the heart rhythms of co-sleeping individuals and found evidence that in co-sleepers, not only do independent heart rhythms appear in the same relative phase for prolonged periods, but also that their occurrence has a bidirectional causal relationship. Under controlled experimental conditions, this finding may be attributed to weak cardiac vibration delivered from one individual to the other via a mechanical bed connection. Our experimental approach could help in understanding how sharing behaviors or social relationships between individuals are associated with interactions of physiological systems.

Abstract
Despite most American adults sharing a bed with a romantic partner, sleep research has examined sleep primarily as an individual behaviour. A growing body of research indicates that couple bed sharing may have an impact on sleep quality, but the current study is the first to examine whether such associations may differ based on attachment security. A sample of 179 cohabiting heterosexual couples completed daily sleep diaries and surveys of their attachment security, avoidance and anxiety. Data were analysed using multilevel modelling. Greater attachment security and lower attachment avoidance were associated with greater subjective sleep quality. Greater sleep concordance (time in bed with partners) was associated with better subjective sleep quality for women with lower attachment security and higher attachment avoidance. Findings suggest that couple bed sharing may benefit the subjective sleep quality of women who have lower attachment security.

Abstract
Purpose of Review The majority of the adult population is affected by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), according to recent epidemiological research. Oral appliance (OA) therapy is increasingly recommended, particularly for patients with milder OSA. This review updates the evidence in favor of OA therapy. Recent Findings A high level of evidence shows that OA is effective in the treatment of OSA, but continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is more efficient. Higher adherence with OAs may compensate for this difference. Daytime sleepiness is better treated with CPAP than with OA in patients with severe OSA. In patients with milder OSA, it is unclear whether sleepiness is significantly reduced. The long-term effectiveness of OAs is uncertain because of side-effects and the risk of OSA deterioration. Summary OAs are effective, but their efficacy is more variable than that of CPAP. More research is needed about the mechanism of action of OA, subjective effects and long-term health outcomes.

Abstract
The present study aimed to explore dynamic and interactive aspects of cosleep in heterosexual couples. The sample consisted of eight young healthy adults who belonged to four heterosexual couples with a good relationship quality and a history of cosleeping. All individuals underwent simultaneous polysomnography in a sleep laboratory for four nights in which they slept individually and with their partner. Also, a sleep protocol of subjective sleep measures was completed. Statistical analyses included cross recurrence quantification analysis to assess synchronization during sleep. Cosleeping was associated with better subjective sleep quality, increased total sleep time, sleep efficiency, total slow wave sleep, and REM sleep. Sleep stages were more synchronized during cosleep independent of awakenings. Cardiorespiratory measures remained unchanged. The results indicate that young healthy couples in good relationships benefit from cosleeping on a subjective and objective level. Combining simultaneous polysomnography and cross recurrence quantification analysis is a promising method to study dynamic and interactive aspects of cosleep possibly leading to deeper understanding of the role of sleep for sociality, the nature of REM sleep, and the partner as a social zeitgeber. Moreover, clinical implications may arise from these findings.
