Abstract
A method for simultaneous determination of nitrogen content and 15N isotope abundance in plants was established by Elemental analysis-gas isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Taking poplar leaves and l-glutamic acid as standards, nitrogen content was determined using the standard curve established by weighted least squares regression between the mass of nitrogen element and the total peak height intensity at m/z 28 and 29. Then the 15N isotope abundance was calculated with the peak height intensity at m/z 28 and 29. Through the comparison of several sets of experiments, the impact of mass discrimination effect, tin capsule consumables, isotope memory effect, and the quality of nitrogen on the results were assessed. The results showed that with a weight of 1/x2, the standard curve has a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9996. Compared to the traditional Kjeldahl method, the measured nitrogen content deviated less than 0.2 %, and the standard deviation (SD) was less than 0.2 %. Compared to the sodium hypobromite method, the 15N isotopic abundances differed less than 0.2 atom%15N, and the SD was less than 0.2 atom% 15N. The established method offers the advantages of being fast, simple, accurate, and high throughput, providing a novel approach for the simultaneous determination of nitrogen content and 15N isotope abundance in plant samples.

Abstract
In this study, for the first time, red LED light radiation was applied to the fermentation process of table olives using the Negrinha de Freixo variety. Photostimulation using LED light emission (630 ± 10 nm) is proposed to shorten and speed up this stage and reduce time to market. Several physical-chemical characteristics and microorganisms (total microbial count of mesophilic aerobic, molds, yeasts, and lactic acid bacteria) and their sequence during fermentation were monitored. The fermentation occurred for 122 days, with two irradiation periods for red LED light. The nutritional composition and sensory analysis were performed at the end of the process. Fermentation under red LED light increased the viable yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) cell counts and decreased the total phenolics in olives. Even though significant differences were observed in some color parameters, the hue values were of the same order of magnitude and similar for both samples. Furthermore, the red LED light did not play a relevant change in the texture profile, preventing the softening of the fruit pulp. Similarly, LED light did not modify the existing type of microflora but increased species abundance, resulting in desirable properties and activities. The species identified were yeasts - Candida boidinii, Pichia membranifaciens, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and bacteria - Lactobacillus plantarum and Leuconostoc mesenteroides, being the fermentative process dominated by S. cerevisiae and L. plantarum. At the end of fermentation (122 days), the irradiated olives showed less bitterness and acidity, higher hardness, and lower negative sensory attributes than non-irradiated. Thus, the results of this study indicate that red LED light application can be an innovative technology for table olives production.

Abstract
Storing manure emits greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4). However, the emissions from types of manure stored at smallholder dairy farms remains unknown. Hence, the study aims to analyse the dynamics of N2O and CH4 from different types of dairy manure as affected by storage periods. We collected samples from fresh manure (FM-DF1), manure from communal ponds in an urban dairy farm (IP-DF1, FP-DF1, MS-DF1), fresh manure from an urban dairy farm (FM-DF2), and fresh (FM-DF3), separated (FS-DF3), and fermented manure (FR-DF3) from a peri-urban dairy farm, and stored them for eight weeks and analyse them using the closed chamber method. The changes of manure composition including total solids (TS), nitrogen (N), ammonia-nitrogen (N-NH3), and carbon (C) were analysed. Results indicated an increase TS in all treatments except for MS-DF1, while N, N-NH3, and C content decreased in all treatments. The N2O emissions formed at the start, peaked in the middle, and declined towards the end storage period. The CH4 emissions peaked at the start and decreased until the end storage period. Treatment FM-DF2 yield highest cumulative of N2O (0.82 g/m2) and CH4 (41.63 g/m2) compared to other fresh manure treatment. A mixed model analysis detected a significant interaction (p < 0.05) between manure types and storage periods. In conclusion, manure types and storage periods affect the emissions. Changes in manure concentration during storage and animal diets are two important factors influencing emissions. Strategies to reduce emissions include reducing moisture content in manure, shortening storage periods, and improving feed quality.

Abstract
The use of rhizospheric SynComs can be a new and sustainable strategy in the agrobiotechnology sector. The objective of this study was to create the most appropriate SynCom composition; examine the ability to dissolve natural rock phosphate (RP) from Morocco in liquid-modified NBRIP medium; determine organic acids, and phytohormones; and verify plant growth promoting and nutrition uptake effect in the pot experiments of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum). A total of nine different microorganisms were isolated, which belonged to three different genera: Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Streptomyces. Out of the 21 treatments tested, four SynComs had the best phosphate-dissolving properties: IJAK-27+44+91 (129.17 mg L-1), IIBEI-32+40 (90.95 µg mL-1), IIIDEG-45+41 (122.78 mg L-1), and IIIDEG-45+41+72 (120.78 mg L-1). We demonstrate that these SynComs are capable of producing lactic, acetic, gluconic, malic, oxalic, citric acids, and phytohormones such as indole-3-acetic acid, zeatin, gibberellic acid, and abscisic acid. In pot experiments with winter wheat, we also demonstrated that the designed SynComs were able to effectively colonize the plant root rhizosphere and contributed to more abundant plant growth characteristics and nutrient uptake as uninoculated treatment or uninoculated treatment with superphosphate (NPK 0-19-0). The obtained results show that the SynCom compositions of IJAK-27+44+91, IIBEI-32+40, IIIDEG-45+41, and IIIDEG-45+41+72 can be considered as promising candidates for developing biofertilizers to facilitate P absorption and increase plant nutrition.

Abstract
This study offers a comprehensive morpho-histological analysis of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of the Malabar red snapper. A comparison of its GIT morphology with that of the Asian seabass reveals similarities and differences between the two species. Additionally, the moisture content, crude protein, and ash in the fillets of Malabar red snapper and Asian seabass were slightly different, with Malabar red snapper exhibiting higher levels of essential fatty acids. Furthermore, higher levels of the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)/saturated fatty acid (SFA) ratio and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)/eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) ratio, and a lower omega-6/omega-3 ratio, were observed in Malabar red snapper compared to Asian seabass. The Malabar red snapper's esophagus featured protective mechanisms such as simple columnar epithelial cells, mucous-secreting glands, and goblet cells that were predominantly stained for acid and neutral mucosubstances. Furthermore, its stomach, with mucus cells that were weakly stained for acid mucosubstances, exhibited distinct regions with varying glandular densities, with the pyloric region featuring few glands. The pyloric caeca of the fish were composed of five finger-like structures and few goblet cells. Several goblet cells gradually increased from the anterior to the posterior region of the intestine. These findings provide useful insights for the aquaculture sector, focusing on Malabar red snapper.

Abstract
Under nitrogen deficient conditions, the Aurantiochytrium limacinum strain BL10 greatly increases the production of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and n-6 docosapentaenoic acid. Researchers have yet to elucidate the mechanism by which BL10 promotes the activity of polyunsaturated fatty acid synthase (Pfa), which plays a key role in the synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). Analysis in the current study revealed that in nitrogen-depleted environments, BL10 boosts the transcription and synthesis of proteins by facilitating the expression of pfa genes via transcriptional regulation. It was also determined that BL10 adjusts the lengths of the 5'- and 3'-untranslated regions (suggesting post-transcriptional regulation) and modifies the ratio of two Pfa1 isoforms to favor PUFA production via post-translational regulation (ubiquitination). These findings clarify the exceptional DHA production of BL10 and provide additional insights into the regulatory mechanisms of PUFA biosynthesis in Aurantiochytrium.

Abstract
The European Green Deal encourages the use of non-productive activities in agriculture. One of the measures is the cultivation of melliferous floral plants at the field margins. Their influence on soil compaction and other deterioration is due to heavy machinery, its inappropriate use and frequent driving on field margins, is little studied. Plants of a high environmental value though rarely grown by farmers were selected for melliferous plant strips: perennial grass swards (PGS), perennial legume swards (PLS), annual floral plats mixture (AEP) and natural grassland swards (NGS). The experiment was installed on a clay loam and loam Cambisol with the aim to determine the effect of different plant composition strips grown at the field edges on the physical and chemical soils parameters of with different granulometric structure. It was found that the highest amounts of roots and plant residues in the soil were left after cultivating sward strips of PGS and NGS compared to the field where cereals had been intensively grown. The amounts of root and plant residues produced by plants, soil rest increase the amount of organic carbon in the soil. During the five-year period, the plants edges strips improved the properties of the field margin top and subsoil.

Abstract
In the category of sports supplements, whey protein powder is one of the popular supplements for muscle building applications. Therefore, verification of the sport supplements as authentic products has become a universal concern. This work aimed to propose vibrational spectroscopy including near infrared (NIR) and infrared (IR) as rapid and non-destructive testing tools for the detection and quantification of maltodextrin, milk powder and milk whey powder in whey protein supplements. Initially, principal component analysis was applied to data for pattern recognition and the results displayed a fine pattern of discrimination. Partial least square discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) and K-nearest neighbours (KNN) were exploited as supervised method modelling classification. This process was done in order to respond to two vital questions whether the sample is adulterated or not and what is the kind of adulteration. PLS-DA showed better classification results rather than KNN according to the figure of merits of the model. Partial least square regression (PLSR) was employed on pre-treated spectra to quantify the amount of adulteration in sport whey supplements. Eventually, it seems vibrational spectroscopy could be implemented as a simple, and low-cost analysis method for the detection and quantification of mentioned adulterants in whey protein supplements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare-associated infections are challenging problems to eradicate. In practice, infection prevention and control regarding the effective cleaning of reusable medical devices is performed. However, real-time monitoring of potentially contaminated devices is hindered by the complex, costly investigations and the time required. AIM To develop an inexpensive approach providing high-sensitivity, rapid, and low-cost protein residue determination on medical devices. METHODS Colourimetric reactions for protein were modified and downscaled to produce a colour product on the moving drop platform and to operate combined with our custom-built smartphone application in order to evaluate and save protein contamination data. The intensity of a product colour was detected by photographing with a smartphone camera and was proportional to the protein concentration in the linear range of 5-20 μg/mL. The protein content was processed on a custom-built smartphone application, namely PromoveCheck. FINDINGS The proposed procedure was highly sensitive, yielding limits of detection and limits of quantification, at 0.03 and 0.10 μg based on the Bradford reaction. It was applied to reusable medical devices, showing no significant differences from the spectrophotometric method and a correlation with the o-phthaldialdehyde method (P<0.05). CONCLUSION This approach demonstrates low cost, sensitivity, efficiency and traceability for investigating reusable medical device cleanliness. The PromoveCheck app can report and acquire protein content that can be used for traceability and alerts concerning questionable or discovered contaminant devices, improving the quality management of the Central Sterile Supply Department.

Abstract
A water-soluble glycopeptide (named GL-PWQ3) with a molecular weight (Mw) of 2.40 × 104 g/mol was isolated from Ganoderma lucidum fruiting body by hot water extraction, membrane ultrafiltration, and gel column chromatography, which mainly consisted of glucose and galactose. Based on the methylation, FT-IR, 1D, and 2D NMR analysis, the polysaccharide portion of GL-PWQ3 was identified as a glucogalactan, which was comprised of unsubstituted (1,6-α-Galp, 1,6-β-Glcp, 1,4-β-Glcp) and monosubstituted (1,2,6-α-Galp and 1,3,6-β-Glcp) in the backbone and possible branches that at the O-3 position of 1,3-Glcp and T-Glcp, and the O-2 position of T-Fucp, T-Manp or T-Glcp. The chain conformational study by SEC-MALLS-RI and AFM revealed that GL-PWQ3 was identified as a highly branched polysaccharide with a polydispersity index of 1.25, and might have compact sphere structures caused by stacked multiple chains. Moreover, the GL-PWQ3 shows strong anti-oxidative activity in NRK-52E cells. This study provides a theoretical basis for further elucidating the structure-functionality relationships of GL-PWQ3 and its potential application as a natural antioxidant in pharmacotherapy as well as functional food additives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutrition plays a vital role in the outcome of critically ill children, particularly those with AKI. Currently, there are no established guidelines for children with AKI treated with continuous RRT (CRRT). A thorough understanding of the metabolic changes and nutritional challenges in AKI and CRRT is required. Our objective was to create clinical practice points for nutritional assessment and management in critically ill children with AKI receiving CRRT. METHODS PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Embase databases were searched for articles related to the topic. Expertise of the authors and a consensus of the workgroup were additional sources of data in the article. Available articles on nutrition therapy in pediatric patients receiving CRRT through January 2023. RESULTS On the basis of the literature review, the current evidence base was examined by a panel of experts in pediatric nephrology and nutrition. The panel used the literature review as well as their expertise to formulate clinical practice points. The modified Delphi method was used to identify and refine clinical practice points. CONCLUSIONS Forty-four clinical practice points are provided on nutrition assessment, determining energy needs, and nutrient intake in children with AKI and on CRRT on the basis of the existing literature and expert opinions of a multidisciplinary panel.

Abstract
In this study, the drying of oyster mushrooms (P. ostreatus) in a tray dryer was optimized. The parameters used to optimize the drying process were drying temperature, airspeed, mass loading, and moisture content. Its drying kinetics were investigated at the optimum drying parameters. A quadratic equation was obtained to predict the moisture content of mushrooms at the given drying temperature, airspeed, and mass loading, and it was validated against experimental results. A minimum moisture content (9.99 wt%) was obtained at the optimum conditions of 60 °C, 3 m/s airspeed, and mass loading of 200 g using a tray dryer. Proximate analysis, shelf-life analysis, inorganic elemental analysis, and functional group analysis were done as a characterization method for mushrooms after drying at the optimum drying conditions. About 27.8 wt% protein and 50.2 wt% carbohydrates were found in proximate results. Besides, potassium and sodium were the dominant elements as estimated by spectrophotometry analysis. The induction period (IP) of dried mushrooms at room temperature is 3520:47 (hour: minute) from the oxidation stability analysis, and the water activity of dried mushrooms was found to be 0.36. The drying kinetics of oyster mushrooms were studied at various temperatures (50-75 °C), optimum airspeed (3 m/s), and mass loading (200 g). The best-fit model describing the mushrooms drying kinetics was found to be Midilli et al., with the lowest RMSE (0.008749), X2 (0.0014), and the highest R2(0.9993) values. The kinetic triplet activation energy, effective diffusivity, and diffusivity constant (Ea, Deff, D0) for oyster mushrooms drying were determined and found to lay in the general range for foodstuffs. The value of Deff results lies within the range of 10-8 to 10-12 m2/s, with Ea of 15.32 kJ/mol and D0 value 2.263 × 10-6 m2/s.

Abstract
In soilless cultivation, plants are grown with nutrient solutions prepared with mineral nutrients. Beneficial microorganisms are very important in plant nutrition. However, they are not present in soilless culture systems. In this study we investigated the impact of introducing Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) as an alternative to traditional mineral fertilizer in hydroponic floating lettuce cultivation. By reducing mineral fertilizers at various ratios (20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%), and replacing them with PGPR, we observed remarkable improvements in multiple growth parameters. Applying PGPR led to significant enhancements in plant weight, leaf number, leaf area, leaf dry matter, chlorophyll content, yield, and nutrient uptake in soilles grown lettuce. Combining 80% mineral fertilizers with PGPR demonstrated a lettuce yield that did not significantly differ from the control treatment with 100% mineral fertilizers. Moreover, PGPR application improved the essential mineral concentrations and enhanced human nutritional quality, including higher levels of phenols, flavonoids, vitamin C, and total soluble solids. PGPR has potential as a sustainable substitute for synthetic mineral fertilizers in hydroponic floating lettuce cultivation, leading to environmentally friendly and nutritionally enriched farming.

Abstract
Research on cultured meat has primarily focused on the mass proliferation or differentiation of muscle cells; thus, the food characteristics of cultured meat remain relatively underexplored. As the quality of meat is determined by its organoleptic properties, cultured meat with similar sensory characteristics to animal-derived meat is highly desirable. In this study, we control the organoleptic and nutritional properties of cultured meat by tailoring the 2D differentiation of primary bovine myoblasts and primary bovine adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells on gelatin/alginate scaffolds with varying stiffness. We assess the effect of muscle and adipose differentiation quality on the sensory properties of cultured meat. Thereafter, we fabricate cultured meat with similar sensory profiles to that of conventional beef by assembling the muscle and adipose constructs composed of highly differentiated cells. We introduce a strategy to produce cultured meat with enriched food characteristics by regulating cell differentiation with scaffold engineering.

Abstract
To enhance the understanding of enzymatic hydrolysis and to accelerate the discovery of key bioactive peptides within enzymatic products, this research focused on elastin as the substrate and investigated the variations in peptide profiles and the production of key bioactive peptides (those exceeding 5% of the total) and their impacts on the biological activity of the hydrolysates. Through the application of advanced analytical techniques, such as stop-flow two-dimensional liquid chromatography and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, the research tracks the release and profiles of peptides within elastin hydrolysates (EHs). Despite uniform peptide compositions, significant disparities in peptide concentrations were detected across the hydrolysates, hinting at varying levels of bioactive efficacy. A comprehensive identification process pinpointed 403 peptides within the EHs, with 18 peptides surpassing 5% in theoretical maximum content, signaling their crucial role in the hydrolysate's bioactivity. Of particular interest, certain peptides containing sequences of alanine, valine, and glycine were released in higher quantities, suggesting Alcalase® 2.4L's preference for these residues. The analysis not only confirms the peptides' dose-responsive elastase inhibitory potential but also underscores the nuanced interplay between peptide content, biological function, and their collective synergy. The study sets the stage for future research aimed at refining enzymatic treatments to fully exploit the bioactive properties of elastin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS People living with motor neuron disease (MND) frequently struggle to consume an optimal caloric intake. Often compounded by hypermetabolism, this can lead to dysregulated energy homeostasis, prompting the onset of malnutrition and associated weight loss. This is associated with a poorer prognosis and reduced survival. It is therefore important to establish appropriate nutritional goals to ensure adequate energy intake. This is best done by measuring resting energy expenditure (mREE) using indirect calorimetry. However, indirect calorimetry is not widely available in clinical practice, thus dietitians caring for people living with MND frequently use energy equations to predict resting energy expenditure (pREE) and estimate caloric requirements. Energy prediction equations have previously been shown to underestimate resting energy expenditure in over two-thirds of people living with MND. Hypermetabolism has previously been identified using the metabolic index. The metabolic index is a ratio of mREE to pREE, whereby an increase of mREE by ≥110% indicates hypermetabolism. We aim to critically reflect on the use of the Harris-Benedict (1919) and Henry (2005) energy prediction equations to inform a metabolic index to indicate hypermetabolism in people living with MND. METHODS mREE was derived using VO₂ and VCO₂ measurements from a GEMNutrition indirect calorimeter. pREE was estimated by Harris-Benedict (HB) (1919), Henry (2005) and kcal/kg/day predictive energy equations. The REE variation, described as the percentage difference between mREE and pREE, determined the accuracy of pREE ([pREE-mREE]/mREE) x 100), with accuracy defined as ≤ ± 10%. A metabolic index threshold of ≥110% was used to classify hypermetabolism. All resting energy expenditure data are presented as kcal/24hr. RESULTS Sixteen people living with MND were included in the analysis. The mean mREE was 1642 kcal/24hr ranging between 1110 and 2015 kcal/24hr. When REE variation was analysed for the entire cohort, the HB, Henry and kcal/kg/day equations all overestimated REE, but remained within the accuracy threshold (mean values were 2.81% for HB, 4.51% for Henry and 8.00% for kcal/kg/day). Conversely, inter-individual REE variation within the cohort revealed HB and Henry equations both inaccurately reflected mREE for 68.7% of participants, with kcal/kg/day inaccurately reflecting 41.7% of participants. Whilst the overall cohort was not classified as hypermetabolic (mean values were 101.04% for HB, 98.62% for Henry and 95.64% for kcal/kg/day), the metabolic index ranges within the cohort were 70.75%-141.58% for HB, 72.82%-127.69% for Henry and 66.09%-131.58% for kcal/kg/day, indicating both over- and under-estimation of REE by these equations. We have shown that pREE correlates with body weight (kg), whereby the lighter the individual, the greater the underprediction of REE. When applied to the metabolic index, this underprediction biases towards the classification of hypermetabolism in lighter individuals. CONCLUSION Whilst predicting resting energy expenditure using the HB, Henry or kcal/kg/day equations accurately reflects derived mREE at group level, these equations are not suitable for informing resting energy expenditure and classification of hypermetabolism when applied to individuals in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rapeseed cake is an important agricultural waste. After enzymatic fermentation, rapeseed cake not only has specific microbial diversity but also contains a lot of fatty acids, organic acids, amino acids and their derivatives, which has potential value as a high-quality organic fertilizer. However, the effects of fermented rapeseed cake on tea rhizosphere microorganisms and soil metabolites have not been reported. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the effect of enzymatic rapeseed cake fertilizer on the soil of tea tree, and to reveal the correlation between rhizosphere soil microorganisms and nutrients/metabolites. RESULTS The results showed that: (1) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake increased the contents of soil organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), available nitrogen (AN), and available phosphorus (AP); increased the activities of soil urease (S-UE), soil catalase (S-CAT), soil acid phosphatase (S-ACP) and soil sucrase (S-SC); (2) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake increased the relative abundance of beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms such as Chaetomium, Inocybe, Pseudoxanthomonas, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, and Stenotrophomonas; (3) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake increased the contents of sugar, organic acid, and fatty acid in soil, and the key metabolic pathways were concentrated in sugar and fatty acid metabolisms; (4) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake promoted the metabolism of sugar, organic acid, and fatty acid in soil by key rhizosphere microorganisms; enzymes and microorganisms jointly regulated the metabolic pathways of sugar and fatty acids in soil. CONCLUSIONS Enzymatic rapeseed cake fertilizer improved the nutrient status and microbial structure of tea rhizosphere soil, which was beneficial for enhancing soil productivity in tea plantations. These findings provide new insights into the use of enzymatic rapeseed cake as an efficient organic fertilizer and expand its potential for application in tea plantations.

Abstract
Due to short post-harvest seasons, it is not always possible to grow worthy cover crops (CCs). This research aims to clarify the impact of undersown red clover (Trifolium pratense L., RC) and post-sown white mustard (Sinapis alba L., WM) management on their biomass, accumulated nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) content and the nutrient release to subsequent main crops. During the study period, RC mass yields varied from 220 to 6590 kg ha-1 DM and those of WM from 210 to 5119 kg ha-1 DM. WM shoot biomass increased with the increase in rainfall in August and the average daily temperature of the post-harvest period. CC productivity and efficiency were higher when growing short-season spring barley than winter wheat. In the warm and rainy post-harvest period, undersown WM after winter wheat increased the biomass by 34.1% compared to post-harvest sowing. The application of straw (+N) increased the accumulation of nutrients in WM biomass. The intensive fertilization of the main crop had a negative effect on RC yield and NPK accumulation. RC shoot biomass was characterized by a higher N content and WM by a higher P concentration. Well-developed CCs could reduce soil mineral nitrogen content by 28.5-58.8% compared to a plot without CCs. Nutrient transfer to spring barley was dependent on the N content of CC biomass and the carbon and nitrogen ratio (C:N < 20). We conclude that CC growth and efficiency were enhanced by the investigated measures, and in interaction with meteorological conditions.

Abstract
Annona senegalensis Pers is a multipurpose tree species valued for food and medicinal uses in Africa. Although there have been attempts to document the proximate composition of fruits and leaves, little is known about the relative role of soil, climate, and genotype on the nutritional quality. The present study evaluated the variation of the proximate composition of fruits and leaves in populations from Benin and Mozambique. It further assessed the impact of soil, climate and genotype on the proximate composition. Data were collected from four populations genetically different and analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis, redundancy analysis (RDA), and variance partitioning. Results revealed significant variation in the proximate composition of fruits and leaves among the studied populations. Ashes and fibers in fruits, and lipids in leaves were 4.8-fold, 2.5- fold, and 1.25-fold higher respectively, in populations from Mozambique. Fruits moisture and lipids content were rather 1.4-fold and 1.10-fold higher in populations from Benin. Moisture and lipids were respectively 6-fold and 1.27-fold higher in fruits than in leaves, while ashes, fibers and proteins were approximately twice higher in the leaves than in the fruits. Genetic groups, climate and soils were found to influence this variation. All three factors explained 74.4% of the variation of nutritional value of fruits and leaves, 31.9% of which was exclusively due to genetic variation, 2.8% to the interaction of climate and soils, 24.1% to the interaction of soil and genetic variation, and 15.5% to the interaction of all three factors. Our study shows that genetic variation and soil properties better than climate, explain the variation of nutritional value of A. senegalensis fruits and leaves and further provides essential information that could be harnessed in the domestication and breeding program of the species for its edible parts.

Abstract
Sediment source fingerprinting has been progressively developed and refined over the past 40 years or more and now represents a widely used and valuable technique, with important practical applications. However, relatively little attention has been given to the target samples and the extent to which they are able to provide meaningful information on short- or longer-term relative source contributions for a given study catchment. A key issue here is the inherent short- and longer-term temporal variability of source contributions and the extent to which such variability is taken into account by the target samples. The objective of this study was to investigate the temporal variation of source contributions from the Qiaozi West catchment, a small (1.09 km2) gully catchment located within the Loess Plateau of China. The target samples represented a suite of 214 spot suspended sediment samples collected during eight representative wet season rainfall events occurring over two years. A suite of geochemical properties was used as fingerprints and standard source apportionment calculations indicated that the gully walls contributed the most sediment (load-weighted mean 54.5%) and, together with cropland (load-weighted mean 37.3%), and gully slopes (load-weighed mean 6.6%) were the main sediment sources. The 214 individual target samples indicated that the contribution of cropland sources varied between 8.3% and 60.4%, gully walls between 22.9% and 85.8% and gully slopes between 1.1% and 30.7%, representing ranges of 52.1%, 62.9% and 29.6% respectively. In order to explore whether the temporal variability of source contributions demonstrated by the study catchment should be seen as typical, equivalent information was abstracted from 14 published studies for other catchments of varying size and located in different environments worldwide. This information demonstrated similar temporal variability of the relative contributions of the major sources, which were typically characterized by ranges of the order of 30-70%. The temporal variability associated with the estimates of relative source contributions provided by target samples has important implications for the uncertainty associated with such estimates derived using source fingerprinting techniques based on a limited number of target samples. Further attention needs to be directed to the design of sampling programmes used to collect such samples and to taking account of such uncertainty in source apportionment calculations.

Abstract
The Bohai Bay region is a famous wine-growing area in China, where the rainfall is concentrated in the summer due to the influence of the temperate semi-humid monsoon climate. As such, the vineyard terrain has a significant impact on the flavor quality of the grapes and the resulting wines. To explore the relationship between the 'Cabernet Sauvignon' wine style and terrain, this study takes four different plots in the Jieshi Mountain region to investigate the differences in the aroma profile of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and wines of two consecutive vintages. Based on two-way ANOVA, there were 25 free and 8 glycosylated aroma compounds in the grapes and 21 and 10 aroma compounds with an odor activity value greater than 0.1 in the wines at the end of alcohol fermentation (AF) and malolactic fermentation (MLF), respectively, that varied among the four plots. Wines from the four plots showed a significant difference in floral and fruity aroma attributes, which were mainly related to esters with high odor activity values. The difference in concentration of these compounds between plots was more pronounced in 2021 than in 2020, and a similar result was shown on the Shannon-Wiener index, which represents wine aroma diversity. It has been suggested that high rainfall makes the plot effect more pronounced. Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that concentrations of (E)-3-hexen-1-ol in grapes and ethyl 3-methylbutanoate, ethyl hexanoate, isoamyl acetate, isopentanoic acid, and phenethyl acetate in wines were strongly positively correlated with the concentrations of N, P, K, Fe, and electrical conductivity in soil but negatively correlated with soil pH. This study laid a theoretical foundation for further improving the level of vineyard management and grape and wine quality in the Jieshi Mountain region.

Abstract
Recently, co-stabilized Pickering emulsion (CPE) that stabilized by colloidal particles and surfactant has received increased research attention, owing to its improved stability and fluid properties comparing with conventional emulsions stabilized by particles or surfactants alone. Herein, the dynamic distribution behavior at multi-scale and the synergistic-competitive interfacial absorption in CPE co-stabilized by Tween20 (Tw20) and zein particles (Zp) were studied by experiment combined simulation method. The experimental studies identified the delicate synergistic-competitive stabilization phenomenon tuned by the molar ratio of Zp and Tw20. Meanwhile, dissipative particle dynamic (DPD) simulation was utilized to reveal the distribution and kinetic motion. Based on the two- and three-dimensional simulation on the formation of CPE, simulation revealed that Zp - Tw20 aggregates were formed when anchoring at the interface. The interfacial adsorption efficiency of Zp was improved at low Tw 20 concentration (0-1.0%wt), Tw20 inhibited the Brownian motion of Zp at the interface and competed them out at high concentrations (1.5-2.0%wt). Zp was departured from the interface 4.5 Å to 10 Å, as Tw20 increased from 1.06% to 5%. The study offers a novel approach to reveal the dynamic distribution behavior of surface active substances during the dynamic formation process of CEP, which will expand our current strategies for interface engineering of emulsions.

Abstract
Many plant species characterize tropical forests, and a small fraction has been studied to favor small communities in the food and medicinal fields. The high biodiversity of these regions allows for the proposed alternatives for the valorization of exotic fruits due to their rich content of value-added compounds that benefit human health. This work focuses on improving the nutritional characteristics of the açai production chain by mixing it with noni and araza. As a main result, it was possible to enhance the organoleptic and nutritional characteristics of the fruits after freeze-drying. Then, the seeds and peels of the fruits were valorized by the extraction of bioactive compounds with conventional methods and biogas production by anaerobic digestion. The best compositions of antioxidant capacity and total phenolic compounds were obtained for the extracts based on the araza peel, with values of 116.4 µmol and 276.6 mg of gallic acid per 100 g of raw material, respectively. Regarding biogas production, the anaerobic digestion performance was influenced by the C/N ratio. The experimental results were used as input to simulate small-scale processes. From a technical point of view, the scheme of açai, noni, and araza mixture (Sc. 4) showed the highest mass yields (0.84 kg products/kg RM) and energy requirement (2.54 kW/kg RM). On the other hand, the processing of single açai (Sc. 1) presented the lowest capital costs (1.37 M-USD) and operating costs (0.89 M-USD/year). However, all scenarios showed techno-economic feasibility and demonstrated the potential of these fruits to valorize the açai market.

Abstract
Consumption of avocado (Persea americana Mill.) has increased worldwide in recent years. The avocado pulp is used, but the peel and seed are discarded as waste. Studies have shown that the seeds are rich in phytochemicals that can be utilized in food systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of Hass avocado seed as a source of polyphenols in the processing of model beverages and baked products with functional properties. The proximate analysis of the avocado seed powder was carried out. The shelf life of phenols in avocado seed powder (ASP) stored in dark, amber-colored bottle and transparent bottle was studied for six months. The seed extract was incorporated into model beverages of different pHs stored at refrigerated and ambient temperatures, and the shelf life was monitored for 20 weeks. The seed powder was incorporated into baked products at 0, 15, 30, or 50% followed by total phenolic content and sensory property analysis. Proximate composition of the seed powder for moisture, ash, protein, fiber, fat, and total carbohydrates was 14.19, 1.82, 7.05, 4.00, 13.64, and 59.30 percent, respectively. During storage of the seed powder, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the phenol content under the different storage light conditions for six months. In the model beverages, lower pH levels (2.8, 3.8, and 4.8) and those stored at ambient temperatures (25°C) recorded lower phenol content than the control pH, i.e., 5.5, and those under refrigerated conditions throughout the storage period studied (20 weeks). The concentration of phenols in the baked products increased with increasing avocado seed powder. The color of all the queen cake formulations was liked very much by the sensory panel. The aroma of 0% and 15% ASP was liked very much, while the other formulations (30% and 50%) were liked moderately. The taste rating and overall acceptability decreased with an increasing avocado seed powder in the queen cake formulations. Avocado seed extracts can be incorporated to prepare functional beverages and functional baked products that are acceptable by sensory panelists.

Abstract
Ion chromatography (IC) has grown in usage rapidly since its first introduction in 1975. However, IC is still sometimes unable to separate target analytes from coexisting components well with identical elution time, due to the limited resolution and column capacity, especially in the presence of high-level salt matrix. These limitations hence drive IC to develop two-dimensional IC (2D-IC). In this review, we capture the 2D-IC applications in environmental samples via the perspective of coupling different IC columns, which aim to summarize where these 2D-IC methods fit in. In sequence, we firstly review the principles of 2D-IC and emphasize one-pump column-switching IC (OPCS IC) because it is a simplified 2D-IC that only uses one set of IC system. We then compare typical 2D-IC and OPCS IC performances in terms of application scope, method detection limit, drawbacks, and expectations. Finally, we propose some challenges of current methods and opportunities for future research. For instance, it is challenging to couple anion exchange column and capillary column in OPCS IC due to the incompatibility between flow path dimensions and suppressor; coupling ion exclusion column and mixed-bed column may be promising to simultaneously determine anions and cations in weak acids or salts. The details of this study may help practitioners to better understand and implement 2D-IC methods and meanwhile motivate researchers to fill in the knowledge gap in the future.

Abstract
Biological process is an effective strategy to improve soil quality in agroecosystems. Sweetpotato has long been cultivated in barren rocky soil (BRS) to improve soil fertility and obtain considerably high yield. However, how sweetpotato cultivation affects soil quality is still unclear. We cultured sweetpotato in virgin BRS, and investigated its transcriptome, rhizospheric microbial community and soil properties. A high sweetpotato yield (22.69 t.ha-1) was obtained through upregulating the expression of genes associated with stress resistance, nitrogen/phosphorus/potassium (N/P/K) uptake, and root exudates transport. Meanwhile, the rhizospheric microbial diversity in BRS increased, and the rhizospheric microbial community structure became more similar to that of fertile soil, which might benefit from the increased root exudates. Notably, the relative abundances of N-fixing and P/K-solubilizing microbes increased, and the copy number of nifH increased 6.67 times. Moreover, the activities of acid, neutral, and alkaline phosphatases increased strongly from 0.63, 0.02, and 1.15-1.58, 0.31, and 2.11 mg phenol·g-1·d-1, respectively, and total carbon, dissolved organic carbon, available N/P content also increased, while bulk density and pH of BRS decreased, indicating the enhanced soil fertility. Our study found sweetpotato cultivation improved BRS quality through shaping microbial communities, which has important guiding significance for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a natural biopolymer and a viable substitute for petroleum-derived polymers that possess immense potential for diverse applications. In the present study, PHB was produced by a halophilic bacteria identified as Bacillus pseudomycoides SAS-B1 by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The bacterial genome was evaluated through complete genome sequencing, which elucidated a 5,338,308 bp genome with 34.88 % of G + C content and 5660 genes. Other genome attributes were analyzed such as functional profiling, gene ontology, and metabolic pathways. Genes involved in PHB biochemical pathway were identified such as phaA, phaB, and phaC. Furthermore, sodium-dependent transporters and other ATP-binding genes were identified in the genome that may be involved in sodium uptake during saline conditions. The PHB production by B. pseudomycoides SAS-B1 was examined under differential salt conditions. The PHB yield was increased from 3.14 ± 0.02 g/L to 6.12 ± 0.04 g/L when salinity was increased upto 20 g/L with intermittent feeding of glucose and corn steep liquor. FTIR, NMR, and GC-MS studies elucidated the presence of desired functional groups, molecular structure, and monomeric compositions of PHB respectively. Further, TGA revealed the thermal stability of the recovered PHB upto (220-230) °C and has a crystallinity index of upto 33 ± 0.5 % as confirmed by XRD analysis.

Abstract
The present study aimed to assess the efficiency of the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms) plant for the reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants from glass industry effluent (GIE) as batch mode phytoremediation experiments. For this, response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural networks (ANN) methods were adopted to evidence the optimization and prediction performances of E. crassipes for total Kjeldahl's nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal. The control parameters, i.e., GIE concentration (0, 50, and 100%) and plant density (1, 3, and 5 numbers) were used to optimize the best reduction conditions of TKN and TP. A quadratic model of RSM and feed-forward backpropagation algorithm-based logistic model (input layer: 2 neurons, hidden layer: 10 neurons, and output layer: 1 neuron) of ANN showed good fitness results for experimental optimization. Optimization results showed that maximum reduction of TKN (93.86%) and TP (87.43%) was achieved by using 60% of GIE concentration and nearly five plants. However, coefficient of determination (R2) values showed that ANN models (TKN: 0.9980; TP: 0.9899) were superior in terms of prediction performance as compared to RSM (TKN: 0.9888; TP: 0.9868). Therefore, the findings of this study concluded that E. crassipes can be effectively used to remediate nitrogen and phosphorus loads of GIE and minimize environmental hazards caused by its unsafe disposal.

Abstract
Cereal and leguminous seeds are considered as major generic dietary source of energy, carbohydrates as well as proteins in the Mediterranean diet and are frequently consumed in their immature form in several regions including the Middle East. Hence, the current study aimed to assess metabolites' heterogeneity amongst five major cereal and leguminous seeds of different species, and cultivars, i.e., Triticum aestivum L. (two cultivars), Hordeum vulgare L., Vicia faba L. and Cicer arietinum L., at different maturity stages. Gas chromatography mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis using multivariate data analyses was employed for nutrient profiling and sample segregation assessed using chemometric tools, respectively. A total of 70 peaks belonging to sugars, fatty acids/esters, steroids, amino acids and organic acids were identified including sucrose, melibiose, glucose and fructose as major sugars, with butyl caprylate, hydroxybutanoic acid and malic acid contributing to the discrimination between seed species at different maturity stages. The investigation of total protein content revealed comparable protein levels amongst all examined seeds with the highest level detected at 20.1% w/w in mature fava bean. Results of this study provide a novel insight on cereal and leguminous seeds' metabolomics in the context of their maturity stages for the first time in literature.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increased motivation to reduce meat consumption globally due to environmental and health concerns, which has driven the development of meat substitutes. Filamentous fungal biomass, commonly known as mycoprotein, is a potential meat substitute since it is nutritious and has filaments to mimic meat fibrils. The current study aimed to investigate the potential use of a cheap substrate derived from the food industry, i.e., residual water in a tempeh factory, for mycoprotein production. The type of residual water, nutrient supplementation, optimum conditions for biomass production, and characteristics of the mycoprotein were determined. The results showed that the residual water from the first boiling with yeast extract addition gave the highest mycoprotein content. The optimum growth condition was a pH of 4.5 and agitation of 125 rpm, and it resulted in 7.76 g/L biomass. The mycoprotein contains 19.44% (w/w) protein with a high crude fiber content of 8.51% (w/w) and a low fat content of 1.56% (w/w). In addition, the amino acid and fatty acid contents are dominated by glutamic acid and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are associated with an umami taste and are considered healthier foods. The current work reveals that the residual boiling water from the tempeh factory can be used to produce high-quality mycoprotein.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adverse impacts of soil microplastics (MPs, diameter<5 mm) on vegetative growth and crop production have been widely reported, however, the single and composite damage mechanisms of polyethylene (PE) /polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics (MPs) induced photosynthesis inhibition are still rarely known. METHODS In this study, two widely distributed MPs, PE and PVC, were added to soils at a dose of 7% (dry soil) to examine the single and composite effects of PE-MPs and PVC-MPs on the photosynthetic performance of soybean. RESULTS Results showed PE-MPs, PVC-MPs and the combination of these two contaminants increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content by 21.8-97.9%, while decreased net photosynthesis rate (Pn) by 11.5-22.4% compared to those in non-stressed plants, PVC MPs caused the most severe oxidative stress, while MPs stress resulted in Pn reduction caused by non-stomatal restriction. The reason for this is the single and composite MPs stress resulted in a 6% to 23% reduction in soybean PSII activity RCs reaction centers, along with negative effects on soybean PSII energy uptake, capture, transport, and dissipation. The presence of K-band and L-band also represents an imbalance in the number of electrons on the donor and acceptor side of PSII and a decrease in PSII energy transfer. Similarly, PVC single stress caused greater effects on soybean chloroplast PSII than PE single stress and combined stresses. DISCUSSION PE and PVC microplastic stress led to oxidative stress in soybean, which affected the structure and function of photosynthetic PSII in soybean, ultimately leading to a decrease in net photosynthetic rate in soybean.

Abstract
In vitro digestion methods that can accurately predict the estimated GI (eGI) values of complex carbohydrate foods, including biscuits, are worth exploring. In the current study, standard commercial biscuits with varied clinical GI values between 9~30 were digested using both the INFOGEST and single-enzyme digestion protocols. The digestion kinetic parameters were acquired through mathematical fitting by mathematical kinetics models. The results showed that compared with the INFOGEST protocol, the AUR180 deduced from digesting using either porcine pancreatin or α-amylase showed the best potential in predicting the eGI values. Accordingly, mathematical equations were established based on the relations between the AUR180 and the GI values. When digesting using porcine pancreatin, GI= 1.834 + 0.009 ×AUCR180 (R2= 0.952), and when digesting using only α-amylase, GI= 6.101 + 0.009 ×AUCR180 (R2=0.902). The AUR180 represents the area under the curve of the reducing-sugar content normalized to the total carbohydrates versus the digestion time in 180 min. The in vitro method presented enabled the rapid and accurate prediction of the eGI values of biscuits, and the validity of the formula was verified by another batch of biscuits with a known GI, and the error rate of most samples was less than 30%.

Abstract
The consumption of locally nutrient-rich edible plants in rural areas can be used to satisfy the dietary diversity of pregnant women. Date palm is one of the wild edible plants in different parts of the world. Studies on wild edible plants in Ethiopia cover only about 5 % of the country's districts. Furthermore, the nutrient composition of the palm heart of Phoenix reclinata is not yet investigated as it is commonly consumed by indigenous people in western Ethiopia. The utilization of such plants requires strong policy support based on scientific evidence to maintain the nutrition security of pregnant women. Homogeneous samples of 1000 grams (g) of palm hearts were collected randomly. The macronutrient contents were determined using standard methods of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC, 2000). The flame Photometric method was used for potassium and sodium determination. The carbohydrate concentration (g/100 g) was 78⋅2. It covers approximately 78⋅5 % of the total daily Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). In line with this, the concentrations of minerals such as potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+), per milligram (mg/100 g) of the sample were 1962⋅3 and 7⋅9, respectively. The palm heart of Phoenix reclinata has many nutritional values and is important for pregnant women. Its nutrient composition is comparable with different staple foods of the country and can contribute to household food security in rural communities.

Abstract
The ionic elements in wine and in vineyards are gaining attention due to characterization of the wine traits, wine origin tracing, and vine nutrient judging. In this experiment, 19 elements were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in 69 wine samples from 4 regions, 3 vintages, and 3 grape maturity levels. Furthermore, the elements related to vine development, such as N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Fe, Zn and Cu in the vineyard soil and petioles were determined. Two orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (O2PLS-DA) showed that K, Mn, Co, Sr, B, Si, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Zn were important elements in distinguishing the regions. High-temperature vintages can bring wines with high levels of Sr in wine. Na, Ca, K, Mg, Rb, Al, Rb, Pb and Fe can be used as signature elements to distinguish wines made from 2 grape maturities. And Cu, Zn, and Mn were the key elements used to differentiate the petioles in the 4 regions. Partial square regression (PLSR) analysis showed that soil pH was positively correlated with Al, B, Ba, K, Pb, Mn, Sr and Rb in wine, and K in wine was significantly positively correlated with element K in the soil. In conclusion, the elemental contents in wine are shaped by the combination of origin, vintage and grape maturity, while some key elements can be used as indicators of origin traceability.

Abstract
The modern approach to the creation of biological products to stimulate plant growth is based on the study of specific inter-bacterial interactions. This study describes the impact that the introduction of strains of the genus Pseudomonas has on annual and perennial leguminous plants and the ecosystem of the leguminous plant-the indigenous microbial community. The objects of research under the conditions of vegetation experiments were plants of field peas (Pisum sativum L.), white lupine (Lupinus albus L.), chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), alfalfa (Medicago sativa subsp. varia (Martyn) Arcang.), and white sweet clover (Melilotus albus Medik.). For the treatment of plant seeds, a liquid culture of strains of growth-stimulating bacteria Pseudomonas koreensis IB-4, and P. laurentiana ANT 17 was used. The positive effect of the studied strains on the germination, growth and development of plants was established. There was no inhibitory effect of inoculants on rhizobia; on the contrary, an increase in nodule formation was observed. The possibility of recultivation of oil-contaminated soil using chickpea and alfalfa as phytomeliorants and growth-stimulating strains P. koreensis IB-4, P. laurentiana ANT 17 as inoculants was evaluated. It is proved that seed treatment improved the morphological parameters of plants, as well as the efficiency of oil destruction.

Abstract
Hydroponics is one of the systems in agriculture which reinforce productivity by controlling environmental and growing conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effect of three bio-fertilizers, namely bacteria, micro-algae, and mycorrhiza, on basil leaf yield and quality (Ocimum basilicum L.) in a floating culture system. Soil has rich amounts of beneficial microorganisms, supporting plant nutrition, producing phytohormones, controlling phytopathogens, and improving soil structure. However, soilless culture usually contains no beneficial microorganisms if we do not include them in the system. This study aims to evaluate the response of three bio-fertilizers where mineral fertilizers are reduced by 50%. Considering the total harvest data, bacteria, mycorrhiza, and micro-algae treatments increased basil yield compared to 50% control by about 18.94%, 13.94%, and 5.72%, respectively. The maximum total yield and leaf area were recorded using bacteria with 2744 g m-2 and 1528 cm2 plant-1. Plants with mycorrhiza achieved the highest number of leaves and branches, with 94.3 leaves plant-1 and 24.50 branches plant-1, respectively. It was observed that this bio-fertilizer increased the formation of lateral branches in the basil plant without thickening its stems. In addition, bacteria and mycorrhiza induced the highest percentage of dry matter and total soluble solids. The effect of bio-fertilizers on basil leaf EC and pH was insignificant for all the treatments at different harvest periods (p < 0.05). Using bio-fertilizers enhanced the intake of nutrients N (nitrogen), P (phosphorus), K (potassium), Ca (calcium), Mg (magnesium), Fe (iron), Mn (manganese), Zn (zinc), and Cu (copper). Using bio-fertilizers represents a promising and environmentally friendly approach to increasing crop yields and ameliorating quality and antioxidant compounds with fewer resources. An application of bio-fertilizers in hydroponic cultivation of basil cv. 'Dino' reduced the need for mineral fertilizers. At the same time, bio-fertilizers affected an increased plant yield and improved product quality. Furthermore, the bacteria had a pronounced enhancing effect on the increase of phenol and flavonoids in the leaves of basil plants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cottonseed meal (CSM) is the main by-product of the cottonseed oil extraction process with high protein content, which is an important protein source for feed industry. However, CSM contains free gossypol (FG), a toxic substance that is detrimental to animal health and greatly limits its application. Microbial fermentation is currently considered to be one of the most effective methods to reduce FG and other anti-nutritional factors in CSM. Previously, yeast and bacteria species are used for degradation of FG in CSM, but showing less detoxification efficiency. Bacillus coagulans combines the properties of both lactic acid bacteria and Bacillus, producing both lactic acid and spores, and is considered a potential probiotic. In this study, we aimed to evaluate and optimize the effect of the solid-state fermentation process using a Bacillus coagulans to gossypol removal contained cottonseed meal. RESULTS 36 B. coagulans strains were isolated and found to have the ability to remove free gossypol. Through the evaluation of strains and optimization of fermentation conditions including fermentation temperature, ratio of material to water, inoculation amount, fermentation time and pH, we have established a solid-state fermentation process using a Bacillus coagulans strain S17 on CSM substrate with 1:1 of the material-to-water ratio, 15% (v/w) seed inoculation, 2% expanded corn flour, 1% bran, and 0.3%-0.8% metal irons at 40 °C for 52 h. After fermentation, the FG content in CSM was reduced from 923.80 to 167.90 mg/kg with 81.83% detoxification efficiency. Meanwhile, the crude protein content in CSM increased from 47.98 to 52.82%, and importantly, the spore concentration of strain S17 reached 1.68 × 1010 CFU/g dry material. CONCLUSION The study showed that B. coagulans have the potential strong ability to degrade free gossypol through cottonseed meal fermentation. This study presents a feasible process for improving the resource utilization rate and nutritional value of CSM via solid-state fermentation through B. coagulans S17.

Abstract
Plant phytochemicals are an important area of study in ruminant nutrition, primarily due to their antimethanogenic potentials. Plant extract yields, their bioactive compounds and antimethanogenic properties are largely dependent on the nature of the extractive solvents. This study evaluated the yields and phytochemical constituents of four plant extracts, as affected by the aqueous-methanolic (H2O-CH3OH) extraction and their antimethanogenic properties on the in vitro methane production. The plant extracts included Aloe vera, Jatropha curcas, Moringa oleifera, and Piper betle leaves with three levels of extractions (70, 85, and 100% CH3OH). The crude plant extract yields increased with the increasing amount of water. M. oleifera crude extracts yields (g/10 g) increased from 3.24 to 3.92, A. vera, (2.35 to 3.11) J. curcas (1.77 to 2.26), and P. betle (2.42 to 3.53). However, the identified and quantified metabolites showed differing degrees of solubility unique to their plant leaves in which they exist, while some of the metabolites were unaffected by the extraction solvents. The methane mitigating potentials of these extracts were evaluated as additives on Eragrostis curvula hay at a recommended rate of 50 mg kg−1 DM. The plant extracts exhibited antimethanogenic properties to various degrees, reducing (p < 0.05) in vitro methane production in the tested hay, A. vera, J. curcas, M. oleifera and P. betle reduced methane emission by 6.37−7.55%, 8.02−11.56%, 12.26−12.97, and 5.66−7.78 respectively compared to the control treatment. However, the antimethanogenic efficacy, gas production and organic matter digestibility of the plant extracts were unaffected by the extraction solvents. Metabolites, such as aloin A, aloin B and kaempferol (in A. vera), apigenin, catechin, epicatechin, kaempferol, tryptophan, procyanidins, vitexin-7-olate and isovitexin-7-olate (in J. curcas), alkaloid, kaempferol, quercetin, rutin and neochlorogenic acid (in M. oleifera) and apigenin-7,4′-diglucoside, 3-p-coumaroylquinic acid, rutin, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, dihydrocaffeic acid, and dihydrocoumaric acid (in P. betle) exhibited a methane reducing potential and hence, additional studies may be conducted to test the methane reducing properties of the individual metabolites as well as their combined forms. Plant extracts could be more promising, and hence, further study is necessary to explore other extraction methods, as well as the encapsulation of extracts for the improved delivery of core materials to the target sites and to enhance methane reducing properties. Furthermore, the use of 70% aqueous extraction on M. oleifera leaf is recommended for practical use due to the reduced cost of extractive solvents, the lower cost and availability of Moringa plants in South Africa, especially in Gauteng Province. Furthermore, 70% aqueous-methanolic extractions of A. vera, J. curcas, and P. betle are recommended for practical use in regions where they exist in abundance and are cost effective.

Abstract
Wheat is one of the oldest and most widely cultivated staple food crops worldwide. Wheat encounters an array of biotic and abiotic stresses during its growth that significantly impact the crop yield and consequently global food security. Molecular and imaging methods that can be used to detect such stresses are laborious and have numerous limitations. This catalyzes the search for alternative techniques that can be used to monitor plant health. Raman spectroscopy (RS) is a modern analytical technique that is capable of probing structure and composition of samples non-invasively and non-destructively. In this study, we investigate the accuracy of RS in confirmatory diagnostics of biotic and abiotic stresses in wheat. Specifically, we modelled nitrogen deficiency (ND) and drought, key abiotic stresses, and Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia) infestation and viral diseases: wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV), economically significant biotic stresses in common bread wheat. Raman spectra as well as high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC)-based analyses revealed drastically distinct changes in the intensity of carotenoid vibration (1185 cm-1) and in the concentration of lutein, chlorophyll, and pheophytin biomolecules of wheat, triggered in response to aforementioned biotic and abiotic stresses. The biochemical changes were reflected in unique vibrational signatures in the corresponding Raman spectra, which, in turn could be used for ~100% accurate identification of biotic and abiotic stresses in wheat. These results demonstrate that a hand-held Raman spectrometer could provide an efficient, scalable, and accurate diagnosis of both biotic as well as abiotic stresses in the field.

Abstract
Starch-stablized and Fe/Mn bimetals modified biochar derived from corn straw (SFM@CBC and SFM@CBC-350) were firstly prepared, characterized (FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, BET and XPS), and applied in Pb removal from water and soil. SFM@CBC and SFM@CBC-350 displayed highly effective adsorption performance of Pb2+ from wastewater with the maximum adsorption capacity of 170.91 mg g-1 and 190.17 mg g-1, respectively, which were much greater than that of FM@CBC (149.25 mg g-1) and CBC (101.10 mg g-1). Studies of adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics indicated that the absorption of Pb2+ by SFM@CBC and SFM@CBC-350 was spontaneous and endothermic reaction, and it was controlled by monolayer chemisorption. The mechanism studies indicated that Pb2+ removal involved with multiple mechanism, including complexation (dominant process confirmed by XPS analysis), physical adsorption, electrostatic attraction, and cation exchange. The reusability test demonstrated that SFM@CBC and SFM@CBC-350 had very good stability and reusability. In addition, in order to further explore Pb removal performance of the modified biochar, SFM@CBC-350 was used in soil-ryegrass pot systems. Compared with the controls, the addition of SFM@CBC-350 reduced Pb content in soil and ryegrass, increased the biomass and total chlorophyll content, reduced the activity of antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD, MDA and POD) and ROS fluorescence intensity of ryegrass, thus alleviating Pb stress of ryegrass. Besides, the addition of SFM@CBC-350 could increase the richness and diversity of soil microorganisms, which was beneficial to the growth of ryegrass. Hence, SFM@CBC-350 has the potential of being used as a green, efficient and promising adsorbent in Pb removal from wastewater and soil.

Abstract
Grassland is the primary land use in China but has experienced severe degradation in recent decades due to overgrazing and conversion to agricultural production. Here, we conducted a field experiment in northeastern Inner Mongolia to test the effectiveness of sown pastures in lowering the grazing pressure on grasslands and raising the quality of marginal soils. Alfalfa and smooth bromegrass monocultures and mixture were sown in a marginal cropland field in Hulunber in June 2016. Biomass productivity, soil physicochemical, and biological properties were monitored annually from 2016 to 2020. The results showed that the marginal cropland soil responded consistently positively to sown pastures for major soil properties. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) increased by 48 and 21%, respectively, from 2016 to 2020 over the 0-60 cm soil depth range. Soil microbes responded proactively too. The soil microbial biomass C (SMBC) and N (SMBN) increased by 117 and 39%, respectively, during the period of 2016-2020. However, by the end of the experiment, the soil of a natural grassland field, which was included in the experiment as a control, led the sown pasture soil by 28% for SOC, 35% for TN, 66% for SMBC, and 96% for SMBN. Nevertheless, the natural grassland soil's productive capacity was inferior to that of the sown pasture soil. The average aboveground biomass productivity of sown pastures was measured at 8.4 Mg ha-1 in 2020, compared to 5.0 Mg ha-1 for natural grassland, while the root biomass of sown pastures was averaged at 7.5 Mg ha-1, leading the natural grassland by 15%. Our analyses also showed that the sown pastures' biomass productivity advantage had a much-neglected potential in natural grassland protection. If 50% of the available marginal cropland resources in Hulunber under the current environmental protection law were used for sown pastures, the livestock grazing pressure on the natural grasslands would decrease by a big margin of 38%. Overall, these results represent systematic empirical and analytical evidence of marginal cropland soil's positive responses to sown pastures, which shows clearly that sown pasture is a valid measure both for soil rehabilitation and biomass production.

Abstract
Gluten degrading enzymes, which are commonly referred to as “glutenases,” represent attractive candidates for the development of a pharmacological treatment of gluten related disorders, such as coeliac disease (CeD). Endoprotease-40 (E40), a novel glutenase secreted by the actinomycete Actinoallomurus A8 and recombinantly produced in S. lividans TK24, was shown to be active at pH 3 to 6 (optimum pH 5), resistant to pepsin and trypsin degradation, able to destroy immunotoxicity of both gliadin 33-mer peptide and whole proteins and to strongly reduce the response of specific T cells when added to gliadin in in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. This study aims to functionally assess the capabilities of Endoprotease-40 (E40) to detoxify residual gluten immunogenic peptides in gastrointestinal digesta of food matrices made of soft and durum wheat. The INFOGEST harmonized protocols were applied to the multicompartmental model of simulated human gastrointestinal digestion, for the quantitative assessment of residual gluten in liquid (beer) and solid (bread and pasta) foods, made of either soft or durum wheat. Proteomic and immunological techniques, and functional assays on intestinal T cell lines from celiac disease patients were used to identify gluten-derived immunogenic peptide sequences surviving in gastric and gastrointestinal digesta after the addition of E40 at increasing enzyme: wheat proteins ratios. During the gastric phase (2 h incubation time), the addition of E40 demonstrated an extensive (≥ 95%) dose-dependent detoxification of whole gluten in real food matrices. Overall, the residual gluten content was found at, or even below, the 20 ppm gluten-free threshold for soft and durum wheat-based food. Furthermore, unlike in untreated gastrointestinal digesta, none of the immunodominant α-gliadin peptides survived in E40-treated digesta. Traces of ω- and γ-gliadin derived immunogenic peptides were still detected in E40-treated digesta, but unable to stimulate celiac-intestinal T cells. In conclusion, E40 is a promising candidate for the oral enzymatic therapy of CeD, as a stand-alone enzyme being efficient along the complete gastrointestinal digestion of gluten.

Abstract
Low molybdenum (Mo) bioavailability in acidic soil obstructs vegetable nitrogen assimilation and thus increases the health risk of vegetable ingestion due to nitrate accumulation. Constantly providing available Mo in acidic soil is a challenge for decreasing nitrate accumulation in vegetables. In this study, three Mo application methods, including biochar-based Mo slow-release fertilizer (Mo-biochar), seed dressing, and basal application, were investigated to enhance Mo bioavailability in acidic soil and nitrogen assimilation in Chinese flowering cabbage (Brassica parachinensis). The results showed that Mo-biochar constantly and sufficiently supplied Mo nutrients throughout the growing period of Brassica parachinensis, as evidenced by the soil available Mo, plant Mo uptake, and Mo values. The improved Mo supply was attributed to the alleviation of acidic soil (pH from 5.10 to 6.99) and the slow release of Mo adsorbed on biochar. Mo-biochar increased the nitrate reductase (NR) activity by 238.6% and glutamate dehydrogenase activity by 27.5%, indicating an enhancement of the rate-limiting steps of nitrogen assimilation, especially for nitrate reduction and amino acid synthesis. The increase in Mo-containing NR could be directly ascribed to the high level of Mo in Brassica parachinensis. Compared with the control, the nitrate content of Brassica parachinensis decreased by 42.9% due to the nitrate reduction induced by increased NR. Additionally, Mo-biochar was beneficial to vegetable growth and quality. In contrast, the transformation from NO3- to NH4+ was blocked with Mo seed dressing and basal application because of low Mo bioavailability in the soil, resulting in a high nitrate content in Brassica parachinensis. Conclusively, Mo-biochar can slowly release Mo and improve the neutral environment for Mo bioavailability, which is an effective strategy to mitigate the high nitrate accumulation of vegetables planted in acidic soil.

Abstract
The plant microbiome is involved in enhancing nutrient acquisition, plant growth, stress tolerance, and reducing chemical inputs. The identification of microbial functional diversity offers the chance to evaluate and engineer them for various agricultural processes. Using a shotgun metagenomics technique, this study examined the functional diversity and metabolic potentials of microbial communities in the rhizosphere of soybean genotype link 678. The dominant genera are Geobacter, Nitrobacter, Burkholderia, Candidatus, Bradyrhizobium and Streptomyces. Twenty-one functional categories were present, with fourteen of the functions being dominant in all samples. The dominant functions include carbohydrates, fatty acids, lipids and isoprenoids, amino acids and derivatives, sulfur metabolism, and nitrogen metabolism. A Kruskal–Wallis test was used to test samples’ diversity differences. There was a significant difference in the alpha diversity. ANOSIM was used to analyze the similarities of the samples and there were significant differences between the samples. Phosphorus had the highest contribution of 64.3% and was more prominent among the soil properties that influence the functional diversity of the samples. Given the functional groups reported in this study, soil characteristics impact the functional role of the rhizospheric microbiome of soybean.

Abstract
In this paper, a comparative analysis between the hand-held refractometer and other methods (TKN and CHNS) was accomplished for the estimation of nitrogen percentage (N%) in urea, nano urea fertilizer, and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) solution. In order to compare the performance of all methods/devices, the detection of N% in different concentrations of urea, nano urea, and DEF were evaluated in terms of their linearity. The most important finding of this study was that the refractometer-based device revealed a good linear coefficient up to 40% urea solution (R2 = 0.99918) among other approaches, which means the estimation of N% is more close to the theoretical value. Moreover, the refractometer has detected the urea, nano urea, and DEF samples within 3 s which were quite fast as compared to other tested methods and no requirement of any chemicals during the sample preparation and analyses. Thus, the finding of this study suggests that a hand-held urea refractometer-based portable device can be used for onsite N% determination by the fertilizer and DEF manufacturing industries and their customers due to its low cost, low power requirement, reliable estimation, rapid N% detection, and its environmental suitability.

Elemental Stoichiometry (C, N, P) of Soil in the Wetland Critical Zone of Dongting Lake, China: Understanding Soil C, N and P Status at Greater Depth. SUSTAINABILITY 2022. Abstract
Earth’s critical zone is defined as a plant–soil–water system, which covers a wide area and has a large vertical thickness, but the soil elemental stoichiometry characteristics of the critical zone at different depths are still unclear. In this study, the spatial distribution of soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the critical zone of a typical wetland in Dongting Lake, China, and their ecological chemometric characteristics were analyzed. The results indicated that: (1) the average C, N and P contents were 18.05, 0.86 and 0.52 g/kg, respectively, with a decreasing trend from the surface to the deeper layers. The soil is relatively rich in C and P, while N is the main element limiting plant growth and development. (2) The mean values of soil C/N, N/P and C/P were 21.1, 1.7 and 35.4 respectively, with the C/N ratio and C/P ratio showing a trend of increasing and then decreasing in the vertical direction and reaching a maximum at a depth of 2–5 m below ground. (3) According to the correlation results, C, N and P in soils are coupled and influenced by each other (p < 0.001), and pH, infiltration coefficient and human activities are closely related to the spatial distribution of C, N and P. (4) Stable Redfield ratios (1:1.6:35.4) may exist in lake wetland soils, and future studies should be conducted for complete systems of the same type of wetlands. The results of the study will provide a theoretical basis for the sustainable development and scientific management of lake wetlands.

Abstract
The current study is aimed to assess the ecotoxicological effects of toxic metals and seasonal shift of the physicochemical characteristics of soil in an endogeic earthworm Metaphire posthuma of industrially contaminated soil of Calcutta leather complex. The accumulation of cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury was quantitated in whole earthworms and coelomocytes. The accumulation of metals was derived to be high in the coelomocytes than whole earthworms. Morphofunctional shift in coelomocytes indicated a high level of metal toxicity in soil inhabitants. The shift in differential coelomocyte count and cellular damage including intense cytoplasmic vacuolation and membrane blebbing of coelomocytes of M. posthuma of contaminated soil were suggestive to a state of immunocompromisation in the same species. Shift in the generation of nitric oxide and activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase indicated a possible immunosuppression in earthworm. Depletion in the acetylcholinesterase activity of coelomocytes indicated neurotoxicity of metals leached from the dumped wastes in Calcutta leather complex. Integrated biomarker response based analysis was carried out to assess the biomarker potential of experimental endpoints of M. posthuma to monitor metal toxicity in soil.

Abstract
In many countries, livestock slurry must be injected or incorporated into the soil to reduce nitrogen losses. However, when the injection is not feasible, farmers adopting conservation practices discard the use of slurry as fertilizer. New approaches related to slurry treatment or application management can stimulate the use of slurry in conservation agriculture (CA). This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic effects of some new management strategies to use dairy slurry for fertilization of ryegrass grown on stubble-covered soil, using as reference standard practices (slurry injection and mineral fertilizer application). The following treatments were considered: (i) bare soil: control (CB), mineral fertilizer (MB), injection (IN); (ii) stubble: control (CS), acidified dairy slurry (ADS), raw dairy slurry (RDS), irrigation following RDS (IR), mineral fertilizer (MS), RDS placed under the stubble (US), raw slurry applied 16 days after sowing (RDS T16). Effects on ryegrass yield, apparent nutrient recovery (ANR) and soil chemical properties were assessed. ADS reached 94% equivalence to MS and performed similarly to IN for productivity, ANR and soil parameters showing to be a sustainable alternative to replace mineral nitrogen and a potential solution to enable dairy slurry application in CA without injection or incorporation into the soil.
