Abstract
Objective Existing studies have reported sustained changes in the cortical structure of rats due to coffee-related factors, which are speculated to occur in the human body. However, there is a lack of research on this topic. Additionally, previous observational studies have found the impact of diseases on cortical structure and the potential therapeutic effects of coffee on these diseases. Our aim was to study the causal effects of coffee-related factors on the human brain using SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms). We will connect these discovered causal effects to the impact of diseases on the brain. Through triangulating evidence, we will reveal the potential active areas of coffee in preventing diseases. Methods We utilized GWAS data from multiple cohorts and their databases, selecting instrumental variables for genetic prediction of coffee intake and plasma levels of caffeine and its direct metabolites. We applied these instrumental variables to individual data on cortical thickness and surface area, as well as hippocampal volume, from the ENIGMA and CHARGE consortium for Mendelian randomization analysis (MR). Triangular evidence was obtained by integrating existing evidence through a specified retrieval strategy, calculating the overlap between coffee's effects on brain regions and disease-related brain regions to identify potential regions of action. Results The MR analysis yielded 93 positive results for 9 exposures, among which theobromine, a metabolite in the caffeine pathway, was found to be associated with increased hippocampal volume. For cortical structure, theobromine in the caffeine pathway was associated with a decrease in total surface area, while theobromine and caffeine in the pathway were associated with an increase in total thickness. The overlap rate of triangular evidence showed no difference in both overall and subgroup analyses, indicating a high overlap between the effects of coffee on brain regions and disease. Conclusions From predicted outcomes from causal effects, coffee intake-related factors may have lasting effects on cortical structure. Additionally, theobromine and theophylline have the greatest impact on certain brain gyri, rather than caffeine. Triangulation evidence indicates that disease and coffee intake-related factors act on the same cortical regions, suggesting the presence of potential shared or antagonistic pathways.

Abstract
As caffeine consumption continues to increase, both positive and negative effects are becoming evident. Caffeine directly affects the cardiovascular system, including heart function and rate. Thus, understanding the current respiratory safety pharmacological responses is of utmost importance. To elucidate the respiratory safety pharmacological characteristics of caffeine, male Sprague-Dawley rats, aged 6 weeks, were intravenously administered doses of 0, 2, 6, and 20 mg/kg of caffeine. Respiratory rate, tidal volume, and minute volume were subsequently measured. In this study, we observed a significant increase in respiratory rate and minute volume, but a remarkable reduction in tidal volume following the intravenous administration of caffeine at doses exceeding 6 mg/kg. These changes were evident within the timeframe of 0.25 to 1.5 h. The data we have collected can serve as valuable foundational scientific information for future research on caffeine, encompassing absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and pharmacological core-battery experiments.

Abstract
Coffee, a widely consumed beverage worldwide, undergoes postharvest methods that influence its physicochemical characteristics, while roasting modulates its composition, affecting sensory attributes. This study investigates the impact of distinct postharvest methods (washed and natural) on the antidiabetic activities, including α-amylase and DPP4, as well as the phytochemical profiling of geological indicator (GI) coffee beans (Coffea arabica L.). The results indicate notable differences in antidiabetic activity and phytochemical profiles between washed and natural processing methods. Coffee beans processed naturally exhibit significant suppression of DPP4 and α-amylase activities (p-value < 0.01) compared to beans processed using the washed technique. TLC profiling using the ratios of the solvent systems of ethyl acetate/dichloromethane (DCM) and acetone/DCM as separation solvents reveals dominant spots for the washed technique. LC-MS/MS-based untargeted metabolomics analysis using principle component analysis (PCA) clearly segregates samples processed by the natural and washed techniques without any overlap region. A total of 1114 phytochemicals, including amino acids and short peptides, are annotated. The natural processing of coffee beans has been shown to yield a slightly higher content of chlorogenic acid (CGA) compared to the washed processing method. Our findings highlight the distinct bioactivities and phytochemical compositions of GI coffee beans processed using different techniques. This information can guide consumers in choosing coffee processing methods that offer potential benefits in terms of alternative treatment for diabetes.

Abstract
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages and is known to have many health benefits. Our previous study reported that kahweol, a diterpene found in coffee, reduced fat accumulation by reducing food intake in Caenorhabditis elegans. Based on the widely known observation of caloric restriction and lifespan, we determined if kahweol extends lifespan in C. elegans. Kahweol significantly extended the lifespan of wild-type C. elegans. However, kahweol increased the lifespan of the eat-2 null mutant that has a reduced food intake phenotype, suggesting that kahweol extends lifespan independent of reduced food intake. Therefore, we further determine the target of kahweol on lifespan extension. Kahweol had no effects on the lifespan of both daf-2 (the homolog of insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor) and daf-16 (the homolog of Forkhead box O transcription factor and a major downstream target of daf-2) null mutants, suggesting kahweol extended lifespan via insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling pathway. In addition, kahweol failed to extend lifespan in tub-1 (the homolog of TUB bipartite transcription factor) and aak-2 (the homolog of AMP-activated protein kinase) null mutants, suggesting these roles on kahweol's effect on lifespan. However, the treatment of kahweol increased the lifespan in sir-2.1 (the homolog of NAD-dependent deacetylase sirtuin-1) and skn-1 (the homolog of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) null mutants over the control, suggesting independent functions of these genes on kahweol's lifespan extension. These results indicate that the insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling and AMPK pathways may play critical roles in extending lifespan by kahweol in C. elegans.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are considered the predominant cause of death globally. An abnormal increase in biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation are consistently linked with the development and even progression of metabolic diseases, including enhanced CVD risk. Coffee is considered one of the most consumed beverages in the world, while reviewed evidence regarding its capacity to modulate biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation remains limited. The current study made use of prominent electronic databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus to retrieve information from randomized controlled trials reporting on any association between coffee consumption and modulation of biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation in healthy individuals or those at increased risk of developing CVD. In fact, summarized evidence indicates that coffee consumption, mainly due to its abundant antioxidant properties, can reduce biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation, which can be essential in alleviating the CVD risk in healthy individuals. However, more evidence suggests that regular/prolonged use or long term (>4 weeks) consumption of coffee appeared to be more beneficial in comparison with short-term intake (<4 weeks). These positive effects are also observed in individuals already presenting with increased CVD risk, although such evidence is very limited. The current analysis of data highlights the importance of understanding how coffee consumption can be beneficial in strengthening intracellular antioxidants to alleviate pathological features of oxidative stress and inflammation to reduce CVD risk within the general population. Also covered within the review is essential information on the metabolism and bioavailability profile of coffee, especially caffeine as one of its major bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) fruits contain high concentrations of phenolic compounds, particularly flavonoids and other micronutrients, which impact human health due to their potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer characteristics. In the present study, the effect of ethyl acetate, hydroethanol, hydromethanol, and aqueous extract from three date palm varieties (i.e., Ajwa, Siwi, and Sukkari) on phytochemical profiles and antioxidant and anticancer activities was investigated. Fruit extracts were screened for their antioxidant activity using the DPPH· method. Phenolic constituents were quantified and identified using HPLC-DAD. Extracts (ethyl acetate, hydroethanol, and hydromethanol) were assessed for cytotoxicity on nine human cancer cell lines, i.e., MG-63, HCT116, MCF7, MDA-MB-231, HEPG2, HUH7, A549, H460, and HFB4, using the sulphorhodamine-B (SRB) assay. Results showed that the ethyl acetate extract of the Sukkari fruits has the greatest antioxidant potential with an IC50 value of 132.4 ± 0.3 μg·mL-1, while the aqueous extract of Ajwa date fruits exhibited the lowest antioxidant effect with an IC50 value of 867.1 ± 0.3 μg·mL-1. The extracts exhibited potent to moderate anticancer activities against the investigated cancer cell line in a source-dependent manner. Methanol extract of Siwi fruits exhibited the most potent anticancer activity (IC50 = 99 ± 1.6 µg·mL-1), followed by the same extract of Sukkari fruits with an IC50 value of 119 ± 3.5 µg·mL-1 against the cell line of human breast cancer (MDA-MB-231). Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) was investigated to determine the relationship among the investigated traits and treatments. Our findings reveal that date palm fruit-derived extracts are excellent sources of biologically active constituents and substantiate their potential use in new anticancer strategies from natural resources.

Abstract
Coffee is a complex mixture of chemicals, which provide biologically active compounds with various health benefits. The some biologically active compounds arising from both its natural structure and formed after processing were determined as an antioxidant capacity of coffee beverages. In this study, we aimed to determine how roasting levels of Arabica coffee seed (light, medium, dark) and three brewing techniques-decoction methods (Turkish coffee), infusion method (filter coffee) and pressure methods (Espresso)-affect total antioxidant capacity in a cup of coffee beverage by electrochemical methods such as square wave stripping voltammetry (SWSV), differential pulse stripping voltammetry (DPSV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Antioxidant capacities of the coffee samples in terms of the equivalent amounts were determined according to standard oxidation peaks of rutin and caffeic acid. The highest antioxidant capacity was found in espresso coffee prepared at light roasting coffee seeds as equivalent the routine and caffeic at 9.4 ± 0.2 g/L and 19.7 ± 0.7 g/L, respectively with SWSV on a carbon paste electrode. As a result, SWSV, DPSV and CV voltammetric methods, fast, reliable, fully validated and without any pretreatment are alternative to conventional analytical methods to evaluation antioxidant values in any food samples.

Abstract
Coffee is a very popular beverage worldwide. However, its composition and characteristics are affected by a number of factors, such as geographical and botanical origin, harvesting and roasting conditions, and brewing method used. As coffee consumption rises, the demands on its high quality and authenticity naturally grows as well. Unfortunately, at the same time, various tricks of coffee adulteration occur more frequently, with the intention of quick economic profit. Many analytical methods have already been developed to verify the coffee authenticity, in which the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) plays a crucial role, especially thanks to its high selectivity and sensitivity. Thus, this review summarizes the results of targeted and non-targeted HPLC analysis of coffee-based products over the last 10 years as an effective tool for determining coffee composition, which can help to reveal potential forgeries and non-compliance with good manufacturing practice, and subsequently protects consumers from buying overpriced low-quality product. The advantages and drawbacks of the targeted analysis are specified and contrasted with those of the non-targeted HPLC fingerprints, which simply consider the chemical profile of the sample, regardless of the determination of individual compounds present.

Abstract
The therapeutic potential of bamboos has acquired global attention. Nonetheless, the biological activities of the plants are rarely considered due to limited available references in Sabah, Malaysia. Furthermore, the drying technique could significantly affect the retention and degradation of nutrients in bamboos. Consequently, the current study investigated five drying methods, namely, sun, shade, microwave, oven, and freeze-drying, of the leaves of six bamboo species, Bambusa multiplex, Bambusa tuldoides, Bambusa vulgaris, Dinochloa sublaevigata, Gigantochloa levis, and Schizostachyum brachycladum. The infused bamboo leaves extracts were analysed for their total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC). The antioxidant activities of the samples were determined via the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays, whereas their toxicities were evaluated through the brine shrimp lethality assay (BSLA). The chemical constituents of the samples were determined using liquid chromatography−tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The freeze-drying method exhibited the highest phytochemical contents and antioxidant activity yield, excluding the B. vulgaris sample, in which the microwave-dried sample recorded the most antioxidant and phytochemical levels. The TPC and TFC results were within the 2.69 ± 0.01−12.59 ± 0.09 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g and 0.77 ± 0.01−2.12 ± 0.01 mg quercetin equivalent (QE)/g ranges, respectively. The DPPH and ABTS IC50 (half-maximal inhibitory concentration) were 2.92 ± 0.01−4.73 ± 0.02 and 1.89−0.01 to 3.47 ± 0.00 µg/mL, respectively, indicating high radical scavenging activities. The FRAP values differed significantly between the drying methods, within the 6.40 ± 0.12−36.65 ± 0.09 mg Trolox equivalent (TE)/g range. The phytochemical contents and antioxidant capacities exhibited a moderate correlation, revealing that the TPC and TFC were slightly responsible for the antioxidant activities. The toxicity assessment of the bamboo extracts in the current study demonstrated no toxicity against the BSLA based on the LC50 (lethal concentration 50) analysis at >1000 µg/mL. LC-MS analysis showed that alkaloid and pharmaceutical compounds influence antioxidant activities, as found in previous studies. The acquired information might aid in the development of bamboo leaves as functional food items, such as bamboo tea. They could also be investigated for their medicinal ingredients that can be used in the discovery of potential drugs.

Abstract
Background Postoperative ileus (POI) is an important complication after elective colorectal surgery, which prolongs hospital stay and increases hospital costs. Coffee has been reported to be beneficial for the recovery of gastrointestinal function. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of coffee consumption in the treatment of POI, following elective colorectal surgery. Methods A comprehensive literature search for medical subject heading (MeSH) terms, including coffee, caffeine, colon, rectum, and colorectal surgery was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library until November 2021. A meta-analysis of postoperative outcomes was conducted to assess the effectiveness of coffee consumption on POI after colorectal surgery. Results 726 articles were identified and six RCTs that captured 416 patients were included. The time to first defecation was reduced with postoperative coffee consumption compared to the control group (mean difference = −15.03 h; 95% confidence interval: -17.79, -12.26; P < 0.00001). There was no difference in time to first flatus, time to tolerance for solid food, length of hospital stay, use of laxatives, reinsertion of nasogastric tube, need for reoperation, postoperative complications, and anastomotic leak between the groups. Coffee did not have any adverse effects. Conclusion The current literature revealed that postoperative coffee consumption shortened the time to first defecation following elective colorectal surgery. Large sample and tightly controlled multicenter randomized clinical trials are needed to offer a more accurate evaluation of the efficacy of coffee.

Abstract
Objective Based on our previous research, chronic paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) can cause depression-like behaviors and microbial changes in gut microbiota. Coffee, as the world’s most popular drink for the lack of sleep, is beneficial to health and attention and can eliminate the cognitive sequelae caused by poor sleep. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of coffee and decaffeinated coffee on PSD rats. Research Design and Methods A total of 32 rats were divided into four groups: control group, PSD model group, conventional coffee group, and decaffeinated coffee group. Behavioral tests, including sucrose preference test, open field test, forced swimming test, and tail suspension test, as well as biochemical detection for inflammatory and antioxidant indexes were performed. The effects of coffee and decaffeinated coffee on the gut microbiota of PSD rats were investigated by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results Coffee and decaffeinated coffee significantly improved the depression-like behaviors. Moreover, the serum levels of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha were decreased in both coffee and decaffeinated coffee groups, as well as the levels of superoxide dismutase and GSH-Px were increased. Gut microbiota analysis revealed that the abundance of S24-7, Lachnospiraceae, Oscillospira, and Parabacteroides were significantly increased in PSD rats, while the abundance of Akkermansia and Klebsiella were significantly decreased. After the treatment of coffee and decaffeinated coffee, the abundance of the above gut microbiota was all restored in different degrees. Coffee had relatively more significant effects on PSD-induced depressive-like behaviors, while the difference between coffee and decaffeinated coffee was not obvious in correcting the disorder of gut microbiota. Conclusions These findings have shown that both coffee and decaffeinated coffee are effective for sleep deprivation-induced depression-like behaviors and the dysbiosis of gut microbiota and indicated that caffeine may be not the only key substance of coffee for regulating gut microbiota.

Abstract
Due to its strong aroma and stimulating effect, coffee is the most consumed beverage worldwide, following water. Apart from being a luscious food product, its contents of high phenolic compounds dominated by chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and their derivatives have caused coffee to be consumed by individuals at higher ratios and have also encouraged the number of varying research studies for its health-promoting properties. However, it should be noted that these desirable beneficial actions of coffee phenolics are in dynamic behaviors, highly dependent on the roasting process parameters and presence of different types of phenolic compounds in the media. Interactions between coffee phenolics and other phenols might end up with induced or reduced biological activities, which is called synergism or antagonism, respectively. In this paper, bioactive properties such as antioxidant, enzyme inhibition, and chelating power are reviewed in terms of synergism and antagonism of coffee phenolics and other bioactive compounds that are introduced into the matrix, such as cacao, ginger, cinnamon, willow bark, cardamom, and chili pepper. Furthermore, how these properties are affected after in vitro digestion and potential reasons for the outcomes are also briefly discussed with the aim of providing a better understanding of these interactions for the food industry. Revealing the synergistic and antagonistic interactions of the phenolics between coffee and different ingredients in a food matrix and their effects on bioactivity mechanisms is not only important for scientific studies but also for conscious food consumption of individuals.

Abstract
Coffee is an intricate mixture of thousands of chemical compounds that are accountable for its flavor and aroma. Roasting is a key step in the processing of coffee beans. This study assessed the effect of microwave roasting (MW) and extraction solvents (ES) on the total polyphenol content, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of coffee beans. The untreated and microwave-roasted (MR) coffee beans showed a total polyphenol content of 40.40 and 35.15 mg GAE/gm DW, respectively, when methanol was used as the solvent for extraction. Similarly, for the untreated coffee beans, the methanol extracted coffee had a significantly (p < 0.05) higher total flavonoid content (39.34 mg CE/g DW) as compared to ethanol (34.82 mg CE/g DW). The obtained IC50 for the untreated and microwave-roasted samples as extracted by methanol were 4.13 and 5.68 mg/mL, respectively, while the IC50 values of untreated and microwave-roasted samples extracted by ethanol were 4.59 and 6.24 mg/mL, respectively. Untreated coffee beans exhibited a higher reducing power (1.237) than that of the microwave-roasted ones (0.839) when extracted with methanol. Chlorogenic acid was the major (2.31–2.68%) phenolic compound found in all the coffee samples whether it was untreated or microwave-roasted. Vanillin demonstrated the lowest (0.118–0.166%) phenolic compound found in the coffee bean samples. These results might be helpful for obtaining the maximum health benefits from coffee.

Abstract
As they become more health conscious, consumers are paying increasing attention to food quality and safety. In coffee production, fraudulent strategies to reduce costs and maximize profits include mixing beans from two species of different economic value, the addition of other substances and/or foods, and mislabeling. Therefore, testing for coffee authenticity and detecting adulterants is required for value assessment and consumer protection. Here we provide an overview of the chromatography, spectroscopy, and single-nucleotide polymorphism-based methods used to distinguish between the major coffee species Arabica and Robusta. This review also describes the techniques applied to trace the geographical origin of coffee, based mainly on the chemical composition of the beans, an approach that can discriminate between coffee-growing regions on a continental or more local level. Finally, the analytical techniques used to detect coffee adulteration with other foods and/or coffee by-products are discussed, with a look at the practice of adding pharmacologically active compounds to coffee, and their harmful effects on health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The chemical compounds in coffee are important indicators of quality. Its composition varies according to several factors related to the planting and processing of coffee. Thus, this study proposed to use near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) associated with partial least squares (PLS) regression to estimate quickly some chemical properties (moisture content, soluble solids, and total and reducing sugars) in intact green coffee samples. For this, 250 samples produced in Brazil were analyzed in the laboratory by the standard method and also had their spectra recorded. RESULTS The calibration models were developed using PLS regression with cross-validation and tested in a validation set. The models were elaborated using original spectra and preprocessed by five different mathematical methods. These models were compared in relation to the coefficient of determination, root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV), root mean square error of test set validation (RMSEP), and ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) and demonstrated different predictive capabilities for the chemical properties of coffee. The best model was obtained to predict grain moisture and the worst performance was observed for the soluble solids model. The highest determination coefficients obtained for the samples in the validation set were equal to 0.810, 0.516, 0.694 and 0.781 for moisture, soluble solids, total sugar, and reducing sugars, respectively. CONCLUSION The statistics associated with these models indicate that NIR technology has the potential to be applied routinely to predict the chemical properties of green coffee, and in particular, for moisture analysis. However, the soluble solid and total sugar content did not show high correlations with the spectroscopic data and need to be improved. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative ileus is a common condition following abdominal surgery. Previous studies have shown the positive effects of coffee on gastrointestinal motility. The aim of this study was to assess whether caffeine is the stimulatory agent in coffee that triggers bowel motility and thus may reduce the duration of postoperative ileus. METHODS This was a single-centered, prospective, randomized controlled, double-blinded clinical trial. Patients scheduled to undergo elective laparoscopic colectomy between November 2017 and March 2019 were randomly assigned to receive either oral caffeine (100 mg three times daily) or placebo following the procedure. Primary endpoints were time to first flatus and time to first bowel movement. Secondary endpoints were time to tolerate a solid, low-residue diet and length of hospital stay. Registration number: NCT03097900. RESULTS Seventy patients were included, [35 males, median age 56 years (range 19-79 years)]. After the exclusion of 12 patients, there were 30 patients in the caffeine group and 28 patients in the placebo group. The first passage of stool in the caffeine group occurred 18 h earlier than in the placebo group (p = 0.012); other endpoints did not reach statistical significance. No caffeine-related adverse events were observed. CONCLUSION Caffeine consumption following colectomy is safe, leads to a significantly shorter time to first bowel movement, and may thus potentially lead to a shorter postoperative hospital stay.

Abstract
Phytochemicals usually mix with food proteins in our regular diet. Unexpected interactions may lead to changes in bioaccessibility, bioactivity, and bioavailability of phytochemicals. However, our understanding of these interactions between phytochemical and food proteins is limited because of the experimental restrictions. Here, we used pulse-proteolysis to conduct the unfolding equilibrium and dose-dependent experiments on the food proteins for the first time. The interaction between epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and caseins was identified in the complicated food matrix, whole milk. Another food proteome, soymilk, was also optimized for identifying the binding targets of EGCG and caffeine. Among the identified interactions, the mixing of milk with coffee generates the most prominent masking effect of 46.61 ± 3.86% relative to the calculated antioxidant capacity. Our results demonstrated that pulse proteolysis is applicable for identifying the interactions between phytochemicals and proteins in the complicated food matrix.

Abstract
Coffee brews have High Molecular Weight (HMW) compounds with described immunostimulatory activity, namely polysaccharides and melanoidins. Melanoidins are formed during roasting and are modified during brews technological processing. In addition, brews have Low Molecular Weight (LMW) compounds, namely free chlorogenic acids and caffeine, with well-known anti-inflammatory properties. However, this study shows that both espresso and instant coffee brews did not present immunostimulatory neither anti-inflammatory in vitro activities. It is possible that the simultaneous existence of compounds with antagonistic effects can mitigate their individual effects. To test this hypothesis, an ultrafiltration separation process was applied, studying the behavior of coffee brews’ HMW on retention of LMW compounds. Several ultrafiltration sequential cycles were required to separate retentates from LMW compounds, suggesting their retention. This effect was higher in instant coffee, attributed to its initial higher carbohydrate content when compared to espresso. Separation of HMW and LMW compounds boosted their immunostimulatory (6.2–7.8 µM nitrites) and anti-inflammatory (LPS induced nitrite production decrease by 36–31%) in vitro activities, respectively. As coffee anti-inflammatory compounds are expected to be first absorbed during digestion, a potential in vivo fractionation of LMW and HMW compounds can promote health relevant effects after coffee intake.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is becoming in one of the most prevalent liver diseases that leads to liver transplantation. This health problem is a multisystem disease with a complex pathogenesis that involves liver, adipose tissue, gut, and muscle. Although several pharmacological agents have been investigated to prevent or treat non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, currently there is no effective treatment for the management of this chronic liver disease. Nonetheless, the use of natural products has emerged as a alternative therapeutic for the treatment of hepatic diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, insulin-sensitizing, antiobesity, hypolipidemic, and hepatoprotective properties. In the present review, we have discussed the evidence from experimental and clinical studies regarding the potential beneficial effects of plant-derived natural products (quercetin, resveratrol, berberine, pomegranate, curcumin, cinnamon, green tea, coffee, garlic, ginger, ginseng, and gingko biloba) for the treatment or prevention of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Abstract
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of postoperative acupressure in the recovery of the gastrointestinal system (GIS) after caesarean section. A total of 160 primipara pregnant women delivered by caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia were randomised into four groups: group 1 (those who received acupressure), group 2 (coffee was provided three times a day), group 3 (chewed sugar-free gum for 15 min with an interval of 4 h from the second postoperative hour), and group 4 (control group). The first gas outflow and defaecation times of the women were compared among the groups. The first flatus and defaecation exit times of the women in the acupressure group were statistically earlier than those of the other groups. No difference was found among the gum-chewing, coffee, and control groups. Acupressure is effective in reducing the flatus and defaecation exit times due to GIS inactivity after abdominal surgery including caesarean section.Impact statementWhat is already known about the topic. The slowing of gastrointestinal system (GIS) motility also occurs after caesarean section aside from other surgical operations. If normal GIS movements do not occur, then several problems, such as the negative increase in the duration of breastfeeding and the mother-baby attachment during the postpartum period, may arise. Therefore, the early onset of bowel functions is important in women who give birth by caesarean section.What do the results of this study add. In the postoperative period, spontaneous GIS motility can be achieved by applying acupressure. The effective use of acupressure in the postoperative period prevents the need for pharmacological methods to eliminate the discomfort caused by the decreased motility of the GIS in women in the postpartum period.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and further research. Acupressure, a non-invasive, easy-to-use, and cost-effective method, plays a role in preventing GIS immotility. Midwives or obstetricians should receive training on acupuncture or acupressure and should ensure that acupuncture or acupressure practices are converted into a protocol to be implemented in the postoperative period. With this transformation, the treatment methods to increase GIS motility and the reduced medication use can decrease the mother's and the newborn's duration of hospital stay and the cost of hospitalisation.

Abstract
Coffee and its components have several neuroprotective properties that lower the risk of cognitive decline and other neurodegenerative diseases. This study reviews the mechanisms by which coffee and its respective compounds affect the brain and its pathologies. Many epidemiological studies in this literature review have shown coffee to reduce the risk of developing dementia, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease. It may also have a positive impact on the disease course of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and depression. The optimal benefits achieved from coffee in these pathologies rely on higher daily doses. Most of its effects are attributed to caffeine by the antagonism of adenosine receptors in the central nervous system; however, other coffee constituents like chlorogenic acids have also shown much promise in therapeutic value. Existing research considers coffee to have great potential, but additional studies are still needed to clarify the mechanisms and actual causal relationships in certain neuropathologies.

Abstract
The bioaccessibility, metabolism, and excretion of lipids composing spent coffee grounds (SCGs) were investigated. An analysis of mycotoxins and an acute toxicity study in rats were performed for safety evaluation. Total fat, fatty acids, and diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol) were determined in SCGs and their digests obtained in vitro. A pilot repeated intake study was carried out in Wistar rats using a dose of 1 g SCGs/kg b.w. for 28 days. Fat metabolism was evaluated by analysis of total fat, cholesterol, and histology in liver. The dietary fiber effect of SCGs was measured radiographically. The absence of mycotoxins and toxicity was reported in SCGs. A total of 77% of unsaturated fatty acids and low amounts of kahweol (7.09 µg/g) and cafestol (414.39 µg/g) were bioaccessible after in vitro digestion. A significantly lower (p < 0.1) accumulation of lipids in the liver and a higher excretion of these in feces was found in rats treated with SCGs for 28 days. No lipid droplets or liver damage were observed by histology. SCGs acutely accelerated intestinal motility in rats. SCGs might be considered a sustainable, safe, and healthy food ingredient with potential for preventing hepatic steatosis due to their effect as dietary fiber with a high fat-holding capacity.

Abstract
The total amount of CGAs and caffeine were quantified in different types of coffee-related drinks. The coffee with the highest content of CGAs was unblended roasted and ground coffee sold in supermarkets. The most caffeine-rich coffee was Americano coffee from coffee shops. The coffee with the highest value of caffeine/CGAs ratio was milk-added RTD coffee. According to caffeine/CGAs ratio, the good quality coffee was found to be the unblended ground coffee from market.
Coffee is the most popular beverage in the Republic of Korea, other than Korea's traditional green tea. Coffee contains many physiologically active substances, such as chlorogenic acids (CGAs) and caffeine. Previous studies have focused on the content of CGAs and caffeine in brewed coffee. This study quantified the total amounts of CGAs and caffeine using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector in 83 various coffee-related products, such as instant coffee, roasted and ground coffee sold in supermarkets, ready-to-drink coffee, and Americano coffee sold in franchise restaurants in the Republic of Korea. According to the results of this study, the coffee with the highest content of CGAs was unblended roasted and ground coffee sold in supermarkets, with a mean value of 194.1 ± 67.7 mg/serving, and the most caffeine-rich coffee was Americano coffee from coffee shops, with a mean value of 166.1 ± 37.5 mg/serving. The caffeine/CGA ratios were determined in various coffee beverages because they are useful parameters for estimating the human health. The lowest mean caffeine/CGAs ratio of 0.5 ± 0.1 was found in unblended ground coffee sold in supermarkets, and the highest mean ratio of 2.5 ± 1.4 was found in milk-added ready-to-drink coffee. Adult caffeine tolerance is defined as 400 mg a day in the Republic of Korea. However, this value highlights the importance of medicines, carbohydrate beverages, tea, chocolate, cocoa products, energy drinks and other sources of caffeine that can contribute to the total intake of caffeine.

Abstract
Coffee is a composite mixture of more than a thousand diverse phytochemicals like alkaloids, phenolic compounds, vitamins, carbohydrates, lipids, minerals and nitrogenous compounds. Coffee has multifunctional properties as a food additive and nutraceutical. As a nutraceutical, coffee has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, antidyslipidemic, anti-obesity, type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which can serve for the treatment and prevention of metabolic syndrome and associated disorders. On the other hand, as a food additive, coffee has antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganisms, inhibits lipid peroxidation (LPO), and can function as a prebiotic. The outcomes of different studies also revealed that coffee intake may reduce the incidence of numerous chronic diseases, like liver disease, mental health, and it also overcomes the all-cause mortality, and suicidal risks. In some studies, high intake of coffee is linked to increase CVD risk factors, like cholesterol, plasma homocysteine and blood pressure (BP). There is also a little evidence that associated the coffee consumption with increased risk of lung tumors in smokers. Among adults who consume the moderate amount of coffee, there is slight indication of health hazards with strong indicators of health benefits. Moreover, existing literature suggests that it may be cautious for pregnant women to eliminate the chances of miscarriages and impaired fetal growth. The primary purpose of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the findings of the positive impacts and risks of coffee consumption on human health. In conclusion, to date, the best available evidence from research indicates that drinking coffee up to 3-4 cups/day provides health benefits for most people.

Abstract
REVIEW QUESTION/OBJECTIVE The purpose of this systematic review is to critically appraise, synthesize and present the best available evidence concerning the effects of coffee on postoperative ileus following abdominal surgery. The review will consider the effect of coffee and decaffeinated coffee on recovering gastrointestinal function, time to first bowel movement, time to first flatus, time to tolerance of solid food, postoperative complications and length of hospital stay.

Abstract
Ionic liquids increase the solubility of various coffee ingredients in aqueous solution but little is known about the underlying mechanism. Kirkwood-Buff integrals as well as the potential of mean force indicate that the imidazolium cations are accumulated at the surface of the solutes, removing water molecules from the solute surface. Although hydrogen bonding of the anions to hydroxy groups of the solutes can be detected, their concentration at the surface is less enhanced compared to the cations. The decomposition into solvation shells by Voronoi tessellation reveals that structural features are only observed in the first solvation shell. Nevertheless, the depletion of water and the excess concentration of the ions and, in particular, of the cations are visible in the next solvation shells as well. Therefore, classical arguments of hydrotropic theory fail to explain this behavior.

Abstract
Multinuclear and multidimensional NMR spectroscopy was applied as a robust and rapid tool for the analysis of several classes of non-polar compounds in roasted coffee beans, coffee beverage and spent coffee grounds. In addition to various fatty acids, other compounds found in roasted coffee lipids, include oxidation and hydrolysis products, terpenes, sterols, and phospholipids. Spent coffee grounds have a similar fatty acid composition with roasted coffee beans and they are rich in Cafestol and Kawheol, which appear as esters of fatty acids. Triglycerides extracted from coffee waste using a green chemistry approach, based on supercritical CO2 extraction, are promising candidates for the production of bioplastics. Bioplastic precursors were produced using an in situ solvent-free epoxidation process and the reaction monitoring was performed using NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Polyphenolic compounds in beverages may have benefits in the prevention of osteoporosis. It has been demonstrated previously that insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) could stimulate the migration of osteoblasts. In the present study, it was investigated whether chlorogenic acid, a major polyphenol in coffee, and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major polyphenol in green tea, could affect this IGF-I-stimulated migration of osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells. The IGF-I-stimulated osteoblast migration, evaluated by Transwell cell migration and wound-healing assays, was inhibited by EGCG but not chlorogenic acid. IGF-I induced the phosphorylation of p44/p42 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase, p70 S6 kinase and Akt. The IGF-I-induced migration was suppressed by PD98059, a MAP kinase kinase 1/2 inhibitor, and deguelin, an Akt inhibitor, but not rapamycin, an inhibitor of the upstream kinase of p70 S6 kinase (mammalian target of rapamycin). EGCG attenuated the IGF-I-induced phosphorylation of p44/p42 MAP kinase but not Akt. Taken together, the present results suggest that EGCG inhibits IGF-I-induced osteoblast migration via p44/p42 MAP kinase.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds provide health benefits in humans. A previous study by our group has indicated that the epidermal growth factor (EGF)‑induced migration of osteoblast‑like MC3T3‑E1 cells is mediated by the phosphorylation of p44/p42 mitogen‑activated protein (MAPK), p38 MAPK, stress‑activated protein kinase (SAPK)/c‑Jun N‑terminal kinase (JNK) and Akt, and that resveratrol, a major polyphenol in grape skin, suppresses the EGF‑induced migration by attenuating Akt and SAPK/JNK activation. In the present study, the effects of chlorogenic acid, a major phenolic acid in coffee, and (‑)‑epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major flavonoid in green tea, on the EGF‑induced migration of MC3T3‑E1 cells were investigated. EGCG significantly reduced the EGF‑induced migration as evaluated by a Transwell migration assay and by a wound healing assay. However, chlorogenic acid failed to affect the EGF‑induced migration. The phosphorylation of p38 MAPK induced by EGF was significantly suppressed by EGCG; however, the EGF‑induced phosphorylation of p44/p42 MAP kinase, SAPK/JNK or Akt was not affected by EGCG. These results suggest that EGCG, but not chlorogenic acid, suppresses EGF‑induced osteoblast migration through inhibiting p38 MAPK activation.

Abstract
This study evaluated the daily per drinker intakes of total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidants from coffee in the Korean diet. Four types of coffee (instant coffee, decaffeinated instant coffee, roasted coffee, and coffee mix) were selected and analyzed. Based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2012, the daily intakes per coffee drinker were estimated to be 348.6 mg gallic acid equivalents for phenolics, 222.5 mg catechin equivalents for flavonoids, and 370.8 mg vitamin C equivalents (DPPH assay) or 546.7 mg vitamin C equivalents (ABTS assay) for antioxidants. Men had higher intakes of instant coffee and coffee mix, while women had a higher intake of roasted coffee. Regarding age categories, over 58% of the coffee consumers were 30-59 years old. This study revealed that, in Korea, approximately half of the people drank about 1.4 cups of roasted coffee or 2.0 cups of instant coffee every day.

KEY TEACHING POINTS • There are several findings, and chlorogenic acid may have antihypertensive effects. • There is a significant correlation between green coffee chlorogenic acid amount and REE. • Intracellular and extracellular liquid amounts decrease following green coffee consumption (215-280 mg caffeine), and these changes are observed in individuals whose usual dietary caffeine intake is relatively both low and high. • The body temperature values of individuals whose usual dietary caffeine intake was in the 50th percentile or greater (relatively high) increased after green coffee consumption.

Abstract
1. The present study is designed to investigate the brain distribution and plasma pharmacokinetics profiles of chlorogenic acid (CGA) after intranasal administration in Charles-Foster rats to evaluate whether the CGA molecules are transported directly via the nose-to-brain path. 2. The CGA is administered intravenously (IV) and intranasally (IN) at the dose of 10 mg/kg. Further, its concentration in the plasma, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the whole brain is analyzed by HPLC-UV method. 3. The study observes that CGA is rapidly absorbed in plasma with tmax of 1 min similar to IV route after IN administration. The peak plasma concentration and AUC0-24 are higher by 3.5 and 4.0 times respectively in IV administration, compared to IN delivery that represents the significant less systemic exposure of CGA in IN route. 4. However, the concentration of CGA in the brain is 4, 6.5, 5.3, 5.2 and 4.5 times higher at 30, 60, 120, 240 and 360 min, respectively in IN administration compared to IV administration. The exposure of CGA in the brain after IN administration (AUCbrain, IN) was significantly greater (4 times) as compared to the exposure of CGA in the brain (AUCbrain, IV) after IV administration reflecting significant brain uptake of CGA through nasal route. Therefore, IN delivery of CGA can be a promising approach for the treatment of stroke and neurodegenerative disorders.

Association of coffee consumption with risk of colorectal cancer: a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies. Oncotarget 2017; 8:18699-18711. Abstract
A meta-analysis was performed to assess the association of coffee consumption with colorectal cancer and to investigate the shape of the association. Relevant prospective cohort studies were identified by a comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases from their inception through August 2015. Either a random-effects model or fixed-effects model was used to compute the pooled risk estimates when appropriate. Linear and nonlinear dose-response meta-analyses were also performed. Nineteen prospective cohort studies involving 2,046,575 participants and 22,629 patients with colorectal cancer were included. The risk of colon cancer was decreased by 7% for every 4 cups per day of coffee (RR=0.93, 95%CI, 0.88-0.99; P=0.199). There was a threshold approximately five cups of coffee per day, and the inverse association for colorectal cancer appeared to be stronger at a higher range of intake. However, a nonlinear association of rectal cancer with coffee consumption was not observed (P for nonlinearity = 0.214). In conclusion, coffee consumption is significantly associated with a decreased risk of colorectal cancer at ≥ 5 cups per day of coffee consumption. The findings support the recommendations of including coffee as a healthy beverage for the prevention of colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. It has primarily consumed due to its stimulant effect and unique taste since the ancient times. Afterwards, its consumption has been historically associated with a lower risk of some diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, cardiovascular disease and some type of cancer and thus it has also consumed due to health benefits. It contains many bioactive compounds such as caffeine, chlorogenic acids and diterpenoid alcohols which have so far been associated with many potential health benefits. For example, caffeine reduces risk of developing neurodegenerative disease and chlorogenic acids (CGA) and diterpene alcohols have many health benefits such as antioxidant and chemo-preventive. Coffee also have harmful effects. For example, diterpenoid alcohols increases serum homocysteine and cholesterol levels and thus it has adverse effects on cardiovascular system. Overall, the study that supports the health benefits of coffee is increasing. But, it is thought-provoking that the association with health benefits of coffee consumption and frequency at different levels in each study. For this reason, we aimed to examine the health effect of the coffee and how much consumption is to investigate whether it meets the claimed health benefits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Postoperative ileus is a common consequence of abdominal surgery, which tends to prolong the duration of hospital stay and imposes considerable economic costs on healthcare system. Coffee is proved to have positive effects on gastrointestinal motility index in healthy young adults. Thus, the present study aims to examine effects of coffee on bowel function after caesarean section. MATERIAL AND METHOD A total number 100 patients after elective caesarean section were randomly assigned before surgery into control and intervention groups. The intervention group received 100cc coffee at 8, 12 and 20h after the surgery, while the control group received 100cc hot water at the same intervals. First bowel sound, first passage of flatus, first defecation, and length of stay after surgery were compared in the two groups. FINDINGS Mean time to first flatus passage was recorded in the control (22.54±5.09h) and intervention (17.28±4.44h) groups and showed to be statistically significant (p=-0.000). However, average time of first defecation (intervention 37.22±16.31h; control 36.82±16.5h; p=0.647) and mean time of hospital stay of patients (intervention 30.08±9.50h; control 32.16±11.82h; p=0.518) and first bowel sound (intervention 5.84±1.41h; control 6.16±1.33h; p=-0.326) were not statistically significant. DISCUSSION Drinking coffee after a caesarean section reduces time to first flatus in patients. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to examine effects of coffee on ileus after elective caesarean section.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a primary phenolic component of coffee and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a primary flavonoid component of green tea, both of which have been documented to possess beneficial health properties. A previous study by the present authors demonstrated that p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) may be associated with osteoprotegerin synthesis stimulated by bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP-4) in osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells. In the present study, the effects of CGA and EGCG on BMP-4-stimulated osteoprotegerin synthesis in MC3T3-E1 cells were investigated. It was observed that CGA had no effect on osteoprotegerin release stimulated by BMP-4, whereas EGCG significantly enhanced BMP-4-stimulated osteoprotegerin release (P=0.003). Levels of osteoprotegerin mRNA expression induced by BMP-4 were also significantly increased by EGCG (P=0.03). By contrast, EGCG had no significant effect on phosphorylation of Smad1 or p38 MAPK induced by BMP-4. In addition, EGCG had little effect on BMP-induced phosphorylation of p70 S6 kinase; however rapamycin, as an inhibitor of p70 S6 kinase, significantly suppressed osteoprotegerin release (P=0.007). These data suggest that EGCG but not CGA may upregulate the synthesis of osteoprotegerin induced by BMP-4 in osteoblasts.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CGA), an important biologically active dietary polyphenol, is produced by certain plant species and is a major component of coffee. Reduction in the risk of a variety of diseases following CGA consumption has been mentioned in recent basic and clinical research studies. This systematic review discusses in vivo animal and human studies of the physiological and biochemical effects of chlorogenic acids (CGAs) on biomarkers of chronic disease. We searched PubMed, Embase, Amed and Scopus using the following search terms: ("chlorogenic acid" OR "green coffee bean extract") AND (human OR animal) (last performed on April 1st, 2015) for relevant literature on the in vivo effects of CGAs in animal and human models, including clinical trials on cardiovascular, metabolic, cancerogenic, neurological and other functions. After exclusion of editorials and letters, uncontrolled observations, duplicate and not relevant publications the remaining 94 studies have been reviewed. The biological properties of CGA in addition to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects have recently been reported. It is postulated that CGA is able to exert pivotal roles on glucose and lipid metabolism regulation and on the related disorders, e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity, cancer, and hepatic steatosis. The wide range of potential health benefits of CGA, including its anti-diabetic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity impacts, may provide a non-pharmacological and non-invasive approach for treatment or prevention of some chronic diseases. In this study, the effects of CGAs on different aspects of health by reviewing the related literatures have been discussed.
