Abstract
Gallic acid (GA), a dietary phenolic acid with potent antioxidant activity, is widely distributed in edible plants. GA has been applied in the food industry as an antimicrobial agent, food fresh-keeping agent, oil stabilizer, active food wrap material, and food processing stabilizer. GA is a potential dietary supplement due to its health benefits on various functional disorders associated with oxidative stress, including renal, neurological, hepatic, pulmonary, reproductive, and cardiovascular diseases. GA is rapidly absorbed and metabolized after oral administration, resulting in low bioavailability, which is susceptible to various factors, such as intestinal microbiota, transporters, and metabolism of galloyl derivatives. GA exhibits a tendency to distribute primarily to the kidney, liver, heart, and brain. A total of 37 metabolites of GA has been identified, and decarboxylation and dihydroxylation in phase I metabolism and sulfation, glucuronidation, and methylation in phase Ⅱ metabolism are considered the main in vivo biotransformation pathways of GA. Different types of nanocarriers, such as polymeric nanoparticles, dendrimers, and nanodots, have been successfully developed to enhance the health-promoting function of GA by increasing bioavailability. GA may induce drug interactions with conventional drugs, such as hydroxyurea, linagliptin, and diltiazem, due to its inhibitory effects on metabolic enzymes, including cytochrome P450 3A4 and 2D6, and transporters, including P-glycoprotein, breast cancer resistance protein, and organic anion-transporting polypeptide 1B3. In conclusion, in-depth studies of GA on food industry applications, health benefits, bioavailability, nano-delivery systems, and drug interactions have laid the foundation for its comprehensive application as a food additive and dietary supplement.

Abstract
Inhibition of breakdown of dietary carbohydrates, by controlling the postprandial activity of diabetic enzymes through fruit polyphenolics can help downregulate the effects of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The study focuses on deciphering the induction of hyperglycaemic control by bio-accessed anti-oxidative polyphenols of Cucumic dipsaceus fruits. Chiefly, we examined the antioxidant activity of bio-accessed polyphenols of C. dipsaceus fruits (DPPH: ME (GDE)-66.26 %; ABTS: FE (IDE)-1963.83 µM TEAC/mg extract; Phosphomolybdenum reduction: FE (IDE)- 64.95 mg AAEAC/g extract). To add more significance, the anti-diabetic activity was predetermined by in silico docking analyses (Pseudojervine - -5.43; Squalene- -10.41) and was concurrently confirmed by in vitro studies (α amylase inhibition: ME (GDE) - 69.58 %; α glucosidase inhibition: FE (UDE)- 88.67 %). A higher bio-accessibility of rutin (37.92 mg/g ODE) and gallic acid (8.36 mg/g ODE) was observed after quantification by HPLC, which confirmed the correlation between anti-diabetic activity and C. dipsaceus fruit phenolic compounds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Metformin is an antidiabetic agent that is used as the first-line treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Gallic acid is a type of phenolic acid that has been shown to be a potential drug candidate to treat diabetic kidney disease, an important complication of diabetes. We aimed to test whether a combination of gallic acid and metformin can exert synergetic effect on diabetic kidney disease in diabetic mice model. METHODS Streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) intraperitoneal injection was used to induce diabetic kidney disease in mice. The diabetic mice were treated with saline (Vehicle), gallic acid (GA) (30 mg/kg), metformin (MET) (200 mg/kg), or the combination of gallic acid (30 mg/kg) and metformin (200 mg/kg) (GA + MET). RESULTS Our results demonstrated that compared to the untreated diabetic mice, all three strategies (GA, MET, and GA + MET) exhibited various effects on improving renal morphology and functions, reducing oxidative stress in kidney tissues, and restoring AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1) signaling in kidney tissues of diabetic mice. Notably, the combination strategy (GA + MET) provided the most potent renal protection effects than any single strategies (GA or MET). CONCLUSION Our results support the hypothesis that gallic acid might serve as a potential supplement to metformin to enhance the therapeutical effect of metformin.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by the dysregulation of glucose homeostasis, resulting in hyperglycemia. However, concerns have been raised about the safety and efficacy of current hypoglycemic drugs due to undesirable side effects. Increasing studies have shown that whole grains (WG) consumption is inversely associated with the risk of T2DM and its subsequent complications. Thus, dietary strategies involving functional components from the WG provide an intriguing approach to restoring and maintaining glucose homeostasis. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of the major functional components derived from WG and their positive effects on glucose homeostasis, demonstrates the underlying molecular mechanisms targeting hepatic glucose metabolism, and discusses the unclear aspects according to the latest viewpoints and current research. Improved glycemic response and insulin resistance were observed after consumption of WG-derived bioactive ingredients, which are involved in the integrated, multi-factorial, multi-targeted regulation of hepatic glucose metabolism. Promotion of glucose uptake, glycolysis, and glycogen synthesis pathways, while inhibition of gluconeogenesis, contributes to amelioration of abnormal hepatic glucose metabolism and insulin resistance by bioactive components. Hence, the development of WG-based functional food ingredients with potent hypoglycemic properties is necessary to manage insulin resistance and T2DM.

Abstract
This study analyzed the effects of functional cereals processed and produced from yellow corn, soybean, acha, orange peels and moringa leaves' polyphenolic content, glycemic index, starch composition and their effects on α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes in vitro. Functional cereals were produced as ready-to-eat cereals at different proportion with variations in the amount of measured acha flour, soybean flour, and blends of orange peels and moringa leaves while maintaining a constant amount of yellow corn. The produced orange peels and moringa leaves blends inclusion to functional cereals had significantly increased phenolic constituents, showed inhibitory activity on α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes in-vitro and reduced glycemic index, starch content and starch to sugar ratios. Interestingly, amongst the produced functional cereals, the best two cereals were with their composition made up of corn, acha, soybean, orange peel, moringa leaves (30: 5:15: 0.5: 0.5) and corn, acha, soybean, moringa leaves (30: 5: 15: 1) which both had the high inhibitory effects on the activities of α-amylase and α-glucosidase while depleting starch content in-vitro when compared with commercially consumed cereals (golden morn). PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Ready-to-eat cereals are highly consumed by children and by adults inclusively. Commercial breakfast cereals are readily available and consumed irrespective of the fact it has high calorie constituent as more emphasis is placed on their nutrients value which includes vitamins A, vitamin C and calcium for boosting immune system and for proper body growth and functioning. However, these commercial breakfast cereals (golden morn) owing to the high maize and millet content present in them are unfavorable to certain consumers or individuals with health challenges such as diabetic patients. This study shows that functional cereals produced in-vitro extensively are not only nutritious but also medicinal in nature, offering benefits in the management of diabetes and related complications.

Abstract
The effects of dietary inclusion of Bambara groundnut and sweet orange peels composite bread on low-dose streptozotocin and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) complications was evaluated in the present study. Male experimental rats-induced T2D were administered with acarbose (standard) and fed with Bambara groundnut and sweet orange peels composite bread for a period of 14 days while monitoring their blood glucose levels. More so, the activities of angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE), serum aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and alanine aminotransferase activities, as well as nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen species (ROS), albumin, total bilirubin, creatinine, urea, and uric acid serum concentrations were assayed for. Diabetic untreated rats showed disorders in ACE, AST, ALT, and ALP activities, and NO, ROS, glucose, albumin, bilirubin, creatinine, urea, uric acid levels, as well as lipid profiles. Interestingly, these disorders were significantly ameliorated in composite bread diet-fed rats in comparison to the diabetic untreated rats. Meanwhile, the presence of polyphenols in the Bambara groundnut and sweet orange peels composite bread diet could have aided the amelioration of these metabolic disorders after the 14th day of administration. Finally, it was proposed that the ability of Bambara groundnut-wheat and sweet orange peel composite bread to treat T2D and its complications makes it a more successful therapy than medications that just target one of the diseased states. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Diabetes mellitus is a global and chronic disease that presently affects 536.6 million people alongside 1.5 million deaths directly attributed to it yearly. Several drug and medicinal agents have been employed for the management of diabetes but those drugs are mostly limited to the management of diabetes while the associated complications are most untreated, while drugs that can manage diabetes and its related complications mostly come at high prices. Therefore, there is an urgent need to evaluate legumes, such as Bambara groundnut, with proven therapeutic potential in the management of diabetes and its complications. However, the Bambara groundnut takes a long period to prepare for a meal, therefore including it in a ready-to-eat product will not only improve its acceptability but also add to economic improvement. Furthermore, adding a waste product, sweet orange peels, will both add flavor and source of additional antioxidant attributes.

Abstract
One of the major complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) is diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) due to the multifaceted therapy involved. Here, we evaluated the combinatorial effect of Moringa leaf (ML) and seed (MS) supplemented diets plus acarbose (ACA) on cardiac acetylcholinesterase (AChE), adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase), adenosine deaminase (ADA), monoamine oxidase (MAO), arginase, angiotensin-I converting enzyme (ACE), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities, thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS), and thiols levels. The diets and ACA (25 mg/kg) were administered for 14 days. The fasting blood glucose level (FBGL), cardiac AChE, ATPase, ADA, MAO, arginase, ACE, LDH activities, and TBARS and thiol levels were determined. Relative to the normal rats, the biomarkers were significantly increased in DM rats but were suppressed significantly in the diets plus ACA-treated rats while improving antioxidant status, with the 4% Moringa plus ACA proving outstanding compared to individual ML/MS and ACA. In addition, ML-supplemented diets with/without ACA had better effects compared to MS with/without ACA, respectively. In conclusion, the combination of ML/MS supplemented diets and ACA synergistically modulates the tested biochemicals. However, the effect on blood vessels and the nerves that control the heart, stiffness of left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, fibrosis, cell signaling abnormalities, related gene expression, clinical trials, and echocardiology studies should be further investigated to affirm this claim. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Moringa oleifera has been a vocal appetite in mitigating cardiovascular disease induced by diabetes, but the formulation of a medicinal diet as an ameliorative route of attention to the pathology is fairly addressed, not talking of its combination with the synthetic antidiabetic drug, such as ACA. Based on this experiment, it is imperative to explore such an idea. This research shows that co-administration of moringa leaf/seed formulated diets plus ACA exhibits a synergistic effect in DCM management. However, further research is needed in this field of experiment.

Abstract
Coccinia grandis (L.) Voigt (family: Cucurbitaceae) is a popular leafy vegetable in Sri Lankan diet. C. grandis is high in phenolics and flavonoids. The present work attempted to determine a suitable extraction technique, and further optimise it to obtain phenolic- and flavonoid-rich extract from C. grandis leaves, with an aim at developing a nutraceutical targeting the dietary management of diabetes mellitus. Acetone extraction (AE), methanol extraction (ME), pre-warmed water extraction (PWE), electric shake extraction (ESE), reflux extraction (RE), ultrasonication with water (UEw), ultrasonication with ethanol (UEe), ultrasonic assisted-reflux extraction (URE), and reflux assisted-ultrasonic extraction (RUE) were chosen as the extraction techniques. URE was selected as a satisfactory extraction technique for further optimisation for the preparation of phenolic- and flavonoid-rich extract based on the contents of phenolics (32.97 ± 0.41 mg of equivalent gallic acid/g of extract) and flavonoids (4.50 ± 0.04 mg equivalent quercetin/g of extract). The highest yield of 32.8% was obtained by the URE technique. The optimal extraction conditions for URE were determined with an ultrasonic time of 19 min, refluxing time of 168 min, and liquid:solid ratio of 16.4 mL/g. This is the first attempt to investigate the selection and optimisation of an extraction technique for obtaining phenolic- and flavonoid-rich extract from C. grandis leaves. The present findings would be useful in the development of a commercially viable nutraceutical using a phenolic- and flavonoid-rich extract of C. grandis.

Abstract
Objectives In recent decades, the trend for treating diabetes mellitus (DM) has shifted toward alternative medicines that are obtained from plant sources. Existing literature suggests that phenolic compounds derived from plants possess promising health-promoting properties. This study aimed to discuss the role of plant-derived phenolic compounds in the effective treatment and management of diabetes. Methods Information about plant secondary metabolites, phenolic compounds, and their role in the treatment and management of diabetes was collected from different databases, such as Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Keywords like secondary metabolites, phenolic compounds, simple phenol, flavonoids, lignans, stilbenes, and diabetes were searched. Research and review articles with relevant information were included in the study. Results Anti-diabetic studies of the four major classes of phenolic compounds were included in this review. The plant-derived phenolic compounds were reported to have potent anti-diabetic activities. However, each class of phenolic compounds was found to behave differently according to various mechanisms. Conclusion The obtained results suggest that phenolic compounds derived from natural sources display promising anti-diabetic activities. Based on the available information, it can be concluded that phenolic compounds obtained from various natural sources play key roles in the treatment and management of diabetes.

Abstract
Background Hypercholesterolemia is an independent modifiable risk factor that accelerates the development of both non-alcoholic fatty liver and atherosclerosis. Coconut water contains a variety of phytochemicals that make it appealing for producing vinegar. Coconut vinegar is rapidly gaining popularity for health benefits in Southeast Asia. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of daily supplementation of coconut vinegar on hepatic and vascular oxidative stress in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet (HCD). Methods Mature coconut water was fermented with coconut sap sugar using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Acetobacter aceti vat Europeans, respectively. Bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity of coconut vinegar were examined in vitro. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups; the control group fed a standard diet (S), a group that received HCD (SC), a group that received HCD supplemented with coconut vinegar at a dose of 1 mL/kg/day (SCV), and a group that received HCD with atorvastatin at a dose of 30 mg/kg/day (SCA). After 8 weeks, serum metabolic profiles, fatty liver, hepatic, and vascular oxidative stress were determined. Results In in vitro studies, coconut vinegar was rich in phenolic compounds and organic acids. The antioxidant capacity of 30 μL of coconut vinegar was 181.55 ± 8.15 μM Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). In the HCD fed rats, daily supplementation of coconut vinegar reduced weight gain, serum triglycerides, and fasting blood sugar levels without renal or liver toxicity. In the liver, coconut vinegar reduced the accumulation of both hepatic cholesterol and hepatic triglyceride, and it also reduced hepatic 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) lipid peroxidation. In the aortic tissues, coconut vinegar increased nitric oxide bioavailability and reduced aortic 4-HNE lipid peroxidation. Conclusion Novel coconut vinegar is the source of antioxidants, and daily supplementation of coconut vinegar was found to attenuate dyslipidemia-induced hepatic and vascular oxidative stress by protective against cellular lipid peroxidation.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of consumption of an optimum biscuit from composite flour of Musa sapientum L. ('banana cochon') and Vigna unguiculata L. (cowpea) on the pancreatic histology, biochemical and hematological parameters of streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats. The optimum biscuit was evaluated for its chemical properties and glycaemic index. The weekly fasting blood glucose level, food intake and weight of the rats were recorded. The effect of 28 days' consumption of different percentages of optimum biscuit with/without Metformin was also evaluated on the pancreatic histology, biochemical and hematological parameters of rats. Results showed that, the optimum biscuit is rich in minerals (potassium, magnesium and calcium), dietary fibre (9.4%) and is a low glycaemic index product (50.91%). Also, the optimum biscuit significantly lowered/maintained the blood glucose level of diabetic rats even though the weekly weights of the rats were reduced while food intake increased. Nonetheless, the hematological parameters of the treated diabetic rats were significantly (P < 0.05) improved when compared to the untreated diabetic rats groups. With the exception of total serum protein, other biochemical parameters such as serum creatinine, urea, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase and bilirubin in the treated diabetic groups were significantly (P < 0.05) reduced or closer to those of non-diabetic rats. The serum cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein levels were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced while the HDL level significantly increased in treated diabetic groups. Histological examination of the pancreas showed that treatment of diabetic groups with optimum biscuit was able to slow down the destruction (protection) of beta-cells. Thus, optimum biscuit could be used to improve the health status during the management and prevention of complications in diabetic patients.

Abstract
We obtained red wine concentrate, which was enriched with natural polyphenolic compounds (PC concentrate). The main purpose was to study the hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects of the red wine concentrate, and its impact on key hematological parameters of rats with experimental diabetes mellitus. While administrating the red wine concentrate to rats with diabetes, partial recovering of glucose tolerance was promoted, as well as normalization of glycated hemoglobin level, an increase in the quantity of erythrocytes and hemoglobin concentration. PC concentrate had anti-radical effect, which was determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazylradical (DPPH) method and effectively inhibited oxidation of phosphatidylcholine liposomes, induced by 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) as a free radical generator. It was also confirmed that PC concentrate had antioxidant properties in vivo. The contents of lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation products, the activity of catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were increased in the plasma of rats with diabetes mellitus. At the same time, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was decreased. The concentrate of red wine had a corrective effect on investigated indicators and caused their normalization in plasma of diabetic animals.

Abstract
Plant-derived phytochemicals have been interested in as nutraceuticals for preventing the onset and progress of diabetes mellitus and its serious complications in recent years. Moringa oleifera Lam. is used in vegetables and in herbal medicine for its health-promoting properties against various diseases including diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to examine an effect of Moringa oleifera on diabetic hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia by meta-analyzing the current evidence of diabetic rodent models. Peer-reviewed studies written in English from two databases, PubMed and Embase, were searched to 30 April 2021. Studies reporting blood glucose or lipid levels in diabetic rodents with and without receiving extracts of Moringa oleifera were included. Forty-four studies enrolling 349 diabetic rodents treated with extracts of Moringa oleifera and 350 diabetic controls reported blood glucose levels. The pooled effect size was -3.92 (95% CI: -4.65 to -3.19) with a substantial heterogeneity. This effect was likely to be, at least in part, modified by the type of diabetic models. Moreover, diabetic hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia were also significantly improved in diabetic rodent models treated with Moringa oleifera.

Abstract
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a long-term complication of type 2 diabetes (T2D) widely known to affect the quality of life. Several aspects of altered metabolism in individuals with T2D may help to compromise the penile vasculature structure and functions, thus exacerbating the imbalance between smooth muscle contractility and relaxation. Among these, advanced glycation end-products and reactive oxygen species derived from a hyperglycaemic state are known to accelerate endothelial dysfunction by lowering nitric oxide bioavailability, the essential stimulus of relaxation. Although several studies have explained the pathogenetic mechanisms involved in the generation of erectile failure, few studies to date have described the efficacy of glucose-lowering medications in the restoration of normal sexual activity. Herein, we will present current knowledge about the main starters of the pathophysiology of diabetic ED and explore the role of different anti-diabetes therapies in the potential remission of ED, highlighting specific pathways whose activation or inhibition could be fundamental for sexual care in a diabetes setting.

Abstract
The pharmacological properties of various parts of plantain trees have directed its use in folkloric management of diabetes and other human ailments. However, little is known about plantain bulb extract (PBE) and their mechanisms of action. This study evaluated the effect of PBE-beverage blends (including 1% and 2 % cocoa powder) sweetened with honey on blood glucose levels, antioxidant status, and carbohydrate hydrolysing enzyme activities in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Animals were selected at random and distributed into 7 groups (n=7), as follows: normal control (NC), untreated diabetic rats, diabetic rats treated with acarbose (STZ-ACA), diabetic rats administered PBE (STZ- PBE), diabetic rats administered honey and PBE (STZ-HPBE), diabetic rats administered 1% cocoa powder-with HPBE blend (STZ-CHPBE-1), and diabetic rats administered 2% cocoa powder with HPBE blend (STZ-CHPBE-2). Compared with the controls, untreated diabetic rats exhibited increased blood glucose levels and hydrolysing enzyme activities, and significant decreases in the activities of antioxidant (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione-S-transferase, and glutathione peroxidase) enzyme and non-enzymatic (glutathione) antioxidants. However, changes in activities were comparatively reversed in all rats administered plantain bulb formulations. CHPBE-2 was slightly more effective than CHPBE-1. Overall, both blends could serve as nutraceutical and/or functional drinks in the management of diabetes.

Abstract
The study evaluated the hypoglycemic effect of biscuits produced from flour blends of three medicinal foods (Unripe plantain fruits, Moringa seed, and pigeon pea) on high-fat diet (HFD)/streptozotocin (STZ)-induced (HFD/STZ) diabetic rats. The formulated biscuits were produced at different proportion of the flour blends and fed to HFD-STZ-induced diabetic rats for 14 days. The result showed that the formulated biscuits caused a significant increase in pancreas, liver, and kidney antioxidant molecules, decreased the production of thiobarbituric reactive acid species (TBARS) in pancreas, liver, and kidney homogenates, and reduced pancreatic α-amylase and intestinal α-glucosidase activities as against untreated diabetic rats. In conclusion, the use of formulated biscuits from the blends of flours from unripe plantain, Moringa seed, and pigeon pea could serve as functional food toward the treatment/management of diabetes and its possible complications such as diabetes-induced liver and kidney damage. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The drug use in the management of diabetes such as acarbose have been reported to have side effects, while diet therapy is gaining much interest in the management of diabetes. Hence, there is a need for diets base therapy that will not only cure diabetes, but also combat its complications. In sight of this, unripe plantain, Moringa seed, and pigeon pea flours were blended and used to produce functional biscuits for diabetic rats. The biscuit could be produced on the large scale under hygienic and regulated condition.

Abstract
We aim to evaluate the effect of Moringa leaf (ML) and seed (MS) inclusive diets on critical biomarkers [acetylcholinesterase (AChE), monoamine oxidase (MAO), angiotensin-I converting enzyme (ACE), adenosine deiminase (ADA) and arginase activities, and thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) level] associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) in the penile tissue of diabetic male rats treated with/without Acarbose (ACA). About 60 mg/kg BW streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats were fed with ML and MS inclusive diets and cotreated with ACA for 14 days. The result indicated that AChE, MAO, ADA, ACE, and arginase activities, as well as TBARS level were (p < .05) restored in the diabetic rats fed with ML/MS inclusive diets treated with/without ACA compared to the untreated diabetic rats. In conclusion, the combination therapy of ML/MS inclusive diets plus ACA could be explored toward the management of diabetic-induced ED. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: We discovered in this study, treatments of diabetic rats with ACA and co-fed with 2% and 4% of Moringa leaf and seed inclusive diets for 14 days, could be of great benefit toward the management of ED caused by diabetes, as evidenced by the expression of some ED-related biomarkers in the penile tissue of diabetes male rats, compared to that of ACA treated alone. Thus, it seems reasonable to explore the effect of food-drug interaction on the large-scale clinical trial to manage diabetes complications, such as the potential effect of Moringa leaf and seed inclusive diets co-administered with ACA for the holistic management of diabetes-induced erectile dysfunction (ED).
