Abstract
This manuscript presents a systematic review of PCB half-lives reported in the scientific literature. The review was completed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and included a review of almost 1000 peer-reviewed publications. In total, 26 articles were found to report half-lives in humans, with the majority of data coming from studies performed in North America on individuals suspected to have been exposed to PCBs. Terminology for reporting PCB half-lives was inconsistent, so we have attempted to consolidate this and recommend using either "apparent half-life" or "intrinsic half-life" in future studies. Within the literature, values for reported half-lives varied considerably for different PCBs. Less chlorinated PCBs generally have shorter half-lives than more chlorinated PCBs. It was interesting to note the large variability of half-lives reported for the same PCB. For example, the reported half-life for PCB 180 varied by nearly 3 orders of magnitude (0.34 years-300 years). Our review identified that the half-lives estimated were largely dependent on the studied cohort. We discuss the importance of PCB body burden, degree of chlorination and PCB structure, gender, age, breastfeeding, BMI, and smoking status on half-life estimations. We also identified significantly shorter half-lives for some PCBs in occupationally exposed individuals compared to results reported from the general population. PCB half-lives are not the same for every PCB or every individual. Therefore, careful consideration is needed when these values are used in human exposure studies.

Abstract
This research focused on investigating the basal serum concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in the general population residing in two urban-industrial zones near and far from an energy recovery plant under construction in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country (Spain). The study used a cross-sectional design and included 227 participants who were randomly selected from municipal censuses in both areas. The participants were stratified based on age (ranging from 18 to 70 years) and sex. Serum samples were collected from the participants and analysed following the established protocol to measure the concentrations of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs. The study used multiple linear regression models to assess the impact of various sociodemographic variables, lifestyle factors, reproductive history, and diet on the variability of the measured compounds in the participants' serum. The median total toxicity equivalent (TEQ) in serum, was 10.58 pg WHO-TEQ2005 g-1 lipid. Serum PCDD levels were lower in the population residing in the "far" zone than the "near" zone. Age was positively associated with both PCDD/F and dl-PCB levels, indicating that older participants had higher concentrations of these compounds in their serum. This finding might be attributed to cumulative exposure over time. In terms of sex differences, women exhibited lower levels of dl-PCBs compared to men. Among lifestyle factors, smokers showed lower levels of dl-PCBs compared to non-smokers. Furthermore, daily alcohol consumption was significantly associated with higher serum levels of these compounds, with daily drinkers showing higher levels than non-drinkers. Consumption of local poultry was associated with significantly higher serum levels and oil consumption with low levels of PCDD/Fs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have multiple adverse effects on human health. Recent studies show a possible association with liver disease, but population-based data are scarce. In this population-based study, we studied the associations between POPs and biomarkers of liver disease and incident liver disease. METHODS This study consisted of 2789 adults that participated in the environmental toxin subset of the Finnish health-examination survey, FINRISK 2007. Toxins were measured from serum samples, and standard liver tests and dynamic aspartate aminotransferase-alanine aminotransferase ratio (dAAR) were measured as biomarkers of liver function. Associations between POPs and the biomarkers were then analysed using linear regression. Associations between POPs and incident liver disease (n = 36) were analysed by Cox regression. RESULTS Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and several perfluorinated alkyl substances exhibited statistically significant positive associations with several biomarkers of liver injury (betacoefficient per SD 0.04-0.14, p < 0.05). These associations were stronger in subgroups of individuals with obesity or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. OCPs, PCBs and perfluoro-octanoic acid also had significant positive associations with dAAR, which can be used to predict risk of incident severe liver outcomes (beta coefficient per SD 0.05-0.08, p < 0.05). OCPs and PCBs were also significantly and positively associated with incident liver disease (hazard ratio per SD 1.82 95% CI 1.21-2.73, p < 0.01 and hazard ratio per SD 1.69, 95% CI 1.07-2.68, p < 0.05 respectively). CONCLUSIONS Several POPs show positive associations with markers of liver injury and incident liver disease, suggesting that environmental toxins are important risk factors for chronic liver disease.

Abstract
Despite the accumulating evidence that increased consumption of ultra-processed food has adverse health implications, it remains difficult to decide what constitutes processed food. Indeed, the current processing-based classification of food has limited coverage and does not differentiate between degrees of processing, hindering consumer choices and slowing research on the health implications of processed food. Here we introduce a machine learning algorithm that accurately predicts the degree of processing for any food, indicating that over 73% of the US food supply is ultra-processed. We show that the increased reliance of an individual's diet on ultra-processed food correlates with higher risk of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, angina, elevated blood pressure and biological age, and reduces the bio-availability of vitamins. Finally, we find that replacing foods with less processed alternatives can significantly reduce the health implications of ultra-processed food, suggesting that access to information on the degree of processing, currently unavailable to consumers, could improve population health.

Abstract
Some dioxins are carcinogenic, but few studies have investigated the relationship between ambient polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) and risk of breast cancer. We evaluated associations between proximity-based residential exposure to industrial emissions of PCDD/F and breast cancer risk in a large U.S. cohort. Sister Study participants at enrollment (2003-2009) were followed for incident breast cancer through September 2018. After restricting to participants with ≥10 years of residential history prior to enrollment (n = 35,908), we generated 10-year distance- and toxic equivalency quotient (TEQ)-weighted average emissions indices (AEI [g TEQ/km2]) within 3, 5, or 10 km of participants' residences, overall and by facility type. Multivariable Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between AEI quartiles (vs. zero AEI) and risk of breast cancer [invasive or ductal carcinoma in situ]. There were 2670 incident breast cancer cases over 11 years (median) of follow-up. Breast cancer risk was increased for those in the highest quartile [Q] of AEI exposure within 3 km (HRQ4:1.18, 95% CI: 0.99,1.40, Ptrend = 0.03). The HR was higher for the 10-year AEI at 3 km from municipal solid waste facilities (HR ≥ median.vs.0:1.50, 95% CI: 0.98, 2.29; Ptrend = 0.07). Risk was higher among ever smokers (vs. never smokers) in the top quartile of the 3 km AEI (HRQ4:1.41, 95% CI:1.12,1.77, Ptrend = 0.003; Pinteraction = 0.03) and higher risk for ER negative tumors was suggested (HRQ4:1.47, 95% CI: 0.95, 2.28, Ptrend = 0.07, Pheterogeneity = 0.17). Our findings suggest that residential exposure to PCDD/F emissions may confer an increased risk of breast cancer.

Abstract
Although numerous studies have explored the relationship between selenium intake and thyroid diseases, few epidemiological studies have investigated the association between selenium intake and thyroid hormones. Therefore, we conducted this analysis to investigate the association between dietary selenium intake and thyroid hormones. Our sample included 5,575 adults (age ≥ 20) years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2012. Thyroid hormones, including total triiodothyronine (T3), total thyroxine (T4), free T3 (FT3), free T4 (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), were detected. Multivariable linear regression models showed that log10-transformed selenium intake (LogSe) was negatively correlated with TT4 (β = -0.383, 95% CI: -0.695, -0.070) and TT4/TT3 (β = -0.003, 95% CI: -0.006, -0.0004) in U.S. adults. Besides, additional stratified analyses by sex demonstrated that LogSe was negatively associated with TT4 (β = -0.007, 95% CI: -0.013, -0.001) and TT4/TT3 (β = -0.664, 95% CI: -1.182, -0.146) and positively associated with FT4/TT4 (β = 0.031, 95% CI: 0.004, 0.059) in male adults. Meanwhile, subgroup analysis by iodine status showed that LogSe was negatively associated with TT4 (β = -0.006, 95% CI: -0.011, -0.002), FT4/FT3 (β = -0.011, 95% CI: -0.023, -0.00002) and TT4/TT3 (β = -0.456, 95% CI: -0.886, -0.026) in iodine sufficiency but not in iodine deficiency adults. Our results demonstrated that the increased dietary selenium intake was negatively correlated with TT4 and TT4/TT3 in U.S. adults. Furthermore, the association between dietary selenium intake and thyroid hormones was more pronounced in males and iodine sufficiency adults.

Abstract
Emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) have aroused public concern around the world. However, biomonitoring evidence regarding the influence of MSWIs on the human body burden of PCDD/Fs is scarce. The aim of this study is to investigate the human body burden levels of PCDD/Fs in MSWI workers and to further explore the potential influencing factors, including duration of occupation and dietary habits, on the PCDD/F levels. A total of 98 paired serum samples from MSWI workers and non-MSWI workers were collected. Seventeen 2,3,7,8-chlorine substituted PCDD/Fs in the serums were analyzed using an isotope dilution high-resolution gas chromatograph/high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRGC/HRMS). The results showed that the mean levels of toxic equivalent (TEQ)-PCDD/Fs for the MSWI workers and the control group were 18.28 pg TEQ g-1 lipid and 5.81 pg TEQ g-1 lipid, respectively. Significantly higher concentrations of PCDD/Fs existed in the incinerator workers compared with the control subjects after adjustment of the confounding factors. OCDD was the most abundant congener in both the MSWI workers and the control subjects, accounting for 82.2% and 89.4% of the ∑17PCDD/Fs, respectively. The serum levels of PCDFs in the MSWI workers increased with the duration of occupation (β = 0.498, P = 0.031), and a higher total concentration of PCDD/Fs were present in senior workers classified as production supervisors than routine operation staff (β = 8.809, P = 0.008). No significant relationship was found between the PCDD/F concentrations and dietary habits. This study was the first to explore the associations between the body burden of PCDD/Fs and occupational exposure as well as dietary intake of MSWI workers in China. The findings provide scientific information for health risk assessments of human exposure to PCDD/Fs.

Abstract
Exposure to dioxins and furans has the potential to affect kidney function and could be associated with chronic kidney disease. Data for US adults aged ≥ 20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 1999-2004 (N = 4433) were analyzed to study trends in adjusted concentrations (AGM) of 1,2,3,7,8-pentachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlororodibenzo-p-dioxin, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9-octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran, 1,2,3,4,7,8-hexachlorodibenzofuran, 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexachlorodibenzofuran, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorodibenzofuran across the stages of kidney function (KF). Stages of KF were defined based on estimated glomerular filtration rate or eGFR expressed in mL/min/1.73 m2. For KF-1, eGFR was > 90, between 60 and 90 for KF-2, between 45 and 60 for KF-3A, and between 15 and 45 for KF-3B/4. AGMs for 1,2,3,7,8-pentachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin increased consistently across the full spectrum of kidney function. For example, AGMs for the total population for 1,2,3,7,8-pentachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin were 2.5, 4.5, 9.3, and 14.9 fg/g lipid for KF-1, KF-2, KF-3A, and KF-3B/4, respectively. For other six dioxins/furans, AGMs increased over KF-1 through KF-3A but then decreased for KF-3B/4, for example, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorodibenzofuran for males, and AGMs for KF-1, KF-2, KF-3A, and KF-3B/4 were 7.9, 8.4, 10.7, and 7.5 fg/g lipid, respectively. For 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexachlorodibenzofuran, smokers were found to have lower AGMs than nonsmokers. For example, for 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptaachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, smoker-nonsmoker AGMs were 22.2 vs. 39.4 fg/g lipid at KF-1, 29.5 vs. 51.4 fg/g lipid at KF-2, 61.6 vs. 72.8 fg/g lipid at KF-3A, and 34.9 vs. 66.4 fg/g lipid at KF-3B/4. The reverse more often than not, was, however, observed for other six dioxins/furans. Smoker-nonsmoker AGMs for 1,2,3,7,8-pentachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin were 2.4 vs. 2.6 fg/g lipid at KF-1, 5.1 vs. 4.0 fg/g lipid at KF-2, 12.7 vs. 6.7 fg/g lipid at KF-3A, and 18.6 vs. 11.9 fg/g lipid at KF-3B/4. In conclusion, lipid-adjusted serum concentrations of dioxins and furans continue increasing as kidney function keeps deteriorating until KF-3A. However, these increases in serum concentrations until KF-3A may be followed by substantial decreases for selected dioxins/furans during KF-3B/4.

Abstract
Data (N = 9650) for US adults aged ≥20 years downloaded from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2003-2014 were analyzed to study trends in adjusted and unadjusted concentrations of selected perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), namely, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA). Over 2003-2014, unadjusted concentrations of PFOA decreased by 50%, by 75% for PFOS, by 32% for PFDA, by 27% for PFHxS, and by 30% for PFNA. Females not only had substantially lower concentrations of every PFAS than males but rate of decrease was also higher for females than males, for example, 36.7% for females and 30.6% for males every two years for PFOS. For each survey period of two years, percent decrease in adjusted concentrations was 17% for PFOA, 33.5% for PFOS, 11.5% for PFDA, 6.3% for PFHxS, and 7.6% for PFNA. However, these trend data must be examined within the context of design changes in NHANES over 2003-2014 resulting in oversampling of Hispanics other than Mexican Americans starting 2007-2008 survey cycle and oversampling of non-Hispanic Asians starting 2011-2012 survey cycle. In order to examine how design changes may have affected computations of adjusted and unadjusted concentrations, the data were analyzed using the racial/ethnic categories prior to and after oversampling of Hispanics other than Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic Asians was put into place.

Abstract
Background Studies on the associations between persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and smoking according to gender and smoking amount (cigarettes/day) are limited, and the results regarding the relationship between POPs and smoking are not completely consistent across studies. Objectives The smoking rate in Korea is one of the highest among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. We investigated the association between serum concentrations of POPs and cigarette smoking in Koreans by smoking status (never-smoker/ever-smoker) and smoking amount (cigarettes/day) according to gender. Methods Serum concentrations of 32 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 19 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured in 401 participants (232 men and 169 women) who received health examinations during the Korean Cancer Prevention Study-II. We compared POP levels in ever-smokers and never-smokers and conducted multivariate logistic regression analyses to identify associations between POPs and smoking. Results Among women, the concentrations of PCB 156, PCB 167, and PCB 180 were significantly higher in ever-smokers than in never-smokers. After adjustments for age, body mass index, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, and alcohol intake, serum PCB 157 concentration was positively associated with male ever-smokers (OR 2.26; 95% CI, 1.01–5.04). In addition, trans-nonachlordane in OCPs as well as PCBs was significantly positively related with female ever-smokers (OR 3.21; 95% CI, 1.04–9.86). We found that subjects who smoked fewer than 15 cigarettes/day had a higher risk of having high POP concentrations than never-smokers. Conclusions These results indicate that smoking may be associated with human serum POPs levels.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between thyroid function and exposure to selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) among those aged ≥ 20 years. Thyroid variables considered for evaluation were thyroid-stimulating hormone, free and total serum thyroxine (FT4, TT4), free and total triiodothyronine (FT3, TT3), and thyroglobulin. PAH metabolites in urine for which data were analyzed were 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 9-hydroxyfluorene, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, 2-hydroxyphenanthrene, 3-hydroxyphenanthrene, and 1-hydroxypyrene. Using data from 2007 to 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, regression models with logs of thyroid variables as dependent variables and PAH exposure, age, race/ethnicity, iodine sufficiency, smoking status, and others as independent variables were fitted. For females, increased levels of 2-hydroxynapthalene, 2-hydroxyphenanthrene, and 1-hydroxypyrene were associated with elevated levels of TT3. For males, increased levels of 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, 2-hydroxyphenanthrene, and 9-hydroxypyrene were associated with decreased levels of FT4.

Abstract
Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2005-2012 were used to study the trends and variability in the levels of urinary thiocyanate (u-SCN), perchlorate (u-P8), and nitrate (u-NO3) by gender, race/ethnicity, active smoking, and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) at home for those aged 12-19 and ≥20years old. For those aged ≥20years, adjusted levels of u-SCN, u-P8, and u-NO3 (i) were lower for males than females (p<0.01), and (ii) were higher for non-Hispanic white (NHW) than non-Hispanic black (NHB) (p<0.01). Also, for those aged ≥20years NHB had higher adjusted levels than Mexican American (MA) for u-SCN (p<0.01) but NHB had lower adjusted levels than MA for u-P8 (p<0.01) and u-NO3 (p<0.01). For those aged 12-19years, adjusted levels of u-SCN, u-P8, and u-NO3 did not vary by gender (p>0.05), and adjusted levels of u-P8 and u-NO3 for NHB were lower than for NHW (p<0.01) as well as higher for NHB than MA for u-SCN (p<0.01) and lower for NHB than MA (p<0.01) for u-P8 and u-NO3. Among those aged ≥20years, active smoking was associated with higher adjusted levels of u-SCN (p<0.01) in a dose-response manner and active smoking was associated with lower adjusted levels of u-P8 (p<0.01) in a dose-response manner. Exposure to ETS was associated with higher adjusted levels of u-SCN (p=0.02) and lower adjusted levels of u-P8 (p<0.01) among ≥20years old. Adjusted levels of u-P8 decreased over 2005-2012 among both 12-19 (p<0.01) and ≥20years old (p=0.04). There was borderline increase in the adjusted levels of u-NO3 for those aged ≥20years (p=0.05) over 2005-2012.

Abstract
Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for years 2003-2008 were used to study the factors that affect urinary levels of dialkylphosphate (DAP) metabolites in urine. Separate regression models were fitted for children aged 6-11 years, adolescents aged 12-19 years, and adults aged ≥20 years. Specifically, DAP metabolites that were analyzed were: dimethylphosphate (DMP), diethylphosphate (DEP), dimethylthiophosphate (DMTP), and diethylthiophosphate (DETP). Males had statistically significantly lower adjusted levels than females for DMP for adolescents, for DEP for adults, for DMTP for both adolescents and adults, and for DETP for both children and adults. Nonsmokers had statistically significantly higher adjusted levels than smokers for DMTP for adolescents and for DMP and DMTP for adults. Exposure to second hand smoke at home was associated with relatively higher levels of DMP among children (p=0.01) but the reverse was found to be true for DMTP (p<0.01) among adolescents as well as adults (p=0.02). Children had higher levels of DMTP than both adolescents and adults (p<0.01) and higher levels of DETP than adolescents (p=0.02). Age was found to be negatively associated with the levels of DMTP (p=0.01) among children and positively associated (p<0.01) with the levels of all four metabolites among adults.

Abstract
Detailed polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) signatures and chiral Enantiomer Fractions (EFs) of CB-95, CB-136 and CB-149 were measured for 30 workers at a transformer dismantling plant. This was undertaken to identify sources of exposure and investigate changes to the PCB signature and EFs over different exposure periods. Approximately 1.5 g of serum was extracted and PCB signatures were created through analysis by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) and EFs calculated following analysis by gas chromatography with high resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS). A total of 84 PCBs were identified in the serum samples with concentrations of the 7 indicator PCBs ranging from 11-350 ng g(-1) of serum (1.2-39 μg g(-1) lipid). The PCB signatures were interpreted using principal component analysis (PCA) which was able to distinguish workers with background or recent minimal exposure from those with prolonged occupational exposure. Occupationally exposed individuals had a similar PCB profile to Aroclor A1260. However, individuals with prolonged exposure had depleted proportions of several PCB congeners that are susceptible to metabolism (CB-95, CB-101 and CB-151) and elevated proportions of PCBs that are resistant to metabolism (CB-74, CB-153, CB-138 and CB-180). The results also identified a third group of workers with elevated proportions of CB-28, CB-60, CB-66, CB-74, CB-105 and CB-118 who appeared to have been exposed to an additional source of PCBs. The results show near complete removal of the CB-95 E2 enantiomer in some samples, indicating that bioselective metabolism or preferential excretion of one enantiomer occurs in humans. By considering PCB concentrations along with detailed congener specific signatures it was possible to identify different exposure sources, and gain an insight into both the magnitude and duration of exposure.

Abstract
The association of arsenic variables in urine, total arsenic (UAS), arsenobetaine (UAB), dimethylarsinic acid (UDMA), and arsenic adjusted for arsenobetaine (UAAS) with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free and total serum thyroxine (FT4, TT4), free and total triiodothyronine (FT3, TT3), and thyroglobulin (TGN) was evaluated by analyzing data from 2007-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. For iodine deficient males, there was a positive association between TSH and UDMA (p < 0.01) and a negative association between the levels of TT4 and UDMA (p < 0.01). Levels of UAAS were inversely associated with the levels of TT4 for both iodine-deficient (p = 0.054) and iodine-replete females (p < 0.01). For iodine-replete females, levels of both TSH and TGN increased with decrease in the levels of both UAB (p < 0.01) and UAS (p < 0.01). There was also a negative association between TSH and UAB as well as UAS (p < 0.01). For iodine-replete males, increased levels of UDMA were associated with decreasing levels of FT4 (p = 0.03).

Abstract
Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the period 2011-2012 were used to determine normal reference ranges and percentile distributions for manganese (Mn) and selenium (Se) in blood by gender, age, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status as determined by annual family income, and smoking status. The effect of gender, age, race/ethnicity, family income, and smoking status on the levels of Mn and Se was also determined by fitting regression models. Males had lower adjusted levels of Mn and higher adjusted levels of Se than females. Adjusted levels of Mn decreased with increase in age but adjusted levels of Se were lower in adolescents aged 12-19 years than adults aged 20-64 years. Non-Hispanic black (NHB) had the lowest levels of both Mn and Se and non-Hispanic Asians (NHAS) had the highest levels of both Mn and Se. Non-Hispanic white (NHW) and NHB had lower levels of Mn than Hispanics (HISP) and NHAS. NHB and HISP had lower levels of Se than NHW and NHAS. Low annual income (<$20,000) was associated with lower levels of Se than high annual income (≥$55,000). Smoking negatively affected the adjusted levels of Se among seniors aged ≥65 years but this was not observed in other age groups. Mn levels were not affected by smoking.

Interacting effects of blood levels of manganese (Mn), selenium, cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury, and serum levels of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) on thyroid function in general US population were evaluated. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2011-2012 were used for this evaluation. The variables used to evaluate thyroid function were as follows: thyroid-stimulating hormone, free and total triiodothyronine (FT3, TT3), free and total thyroxine (FT4, TT4), and thyroglobulin (Tg). Levels of FT4 were positively associated with the levels of copper and negatively associated with the levels of Fe for males only. Elevated levels of Mn and Fe were associated with increased levels of FT3 for both males and females. TT4 had a positive association with the levels of Cu and a negative association with the levels of Fe for both males and females.

Abstract
Association of the levels of serum selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) with thyroid function was assessed by analyzing data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the cycle 2011-2012. Thyroid function variables analyzed were as follows: thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free and total triiodothyronine (FT3, TT3), free and total thyroxine (FT4, TT4), and thyroglobulin (TGN). Regression models with log-transformed values of thyroid hormones as independent variables and age, race/ethnicity, smoking and iodine sufficiency status, respondents' education, and levels of Se, Zn, and Cu as dependent variables were fitted. For males, levels of Zn were associated with decreased levels of FT4 and TT4, and levels of Cu were associated with increased levels of FT4 and TT4. For females, levels of Cu were associated with increased levels of TT3 and TT4. Smoking was found to be associated with lower levels of TSH and higher levels of TGN in males. Smoking was found to be associated with lower levels of TT4 in females. Males had about 5-10% higher levels of both Se and Zn, but as much as 20% lower levels of Cu than females. Smoking was associated with lower levels of Zn, but higher levels of Cu in males.

Abstract
Experimental studies have shown that dioxin-like chemicals may interfere with aspects of the endocrine system including growth. However, human background population studies are, however, scarce. We aimed to investigate whether early exposure of healthy infants to dioxin-like chemicals was associated with changes in early childhood growth and serum IGF1. In 418 maternal breast milk samples of Danish children (born 1997-2001) from a longitudinal cohort, we measured polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans, and polychlorinated biphenyls (pg or ng/g lipid) and calculated total toxic equivalent (total TEQ). SDS and SDS changes over time (ΔSDS) were calculated for height, weight, BMI, and skinfold fat percentage at 0, 3, 18, and 36 months of age. Serum IGF1 was measured at 3 months. We adjusted for confounders using multivariate regression analysis. Estimates (in parentheses) correspond to a fivefold increase in total TEQ. TEQ levels in breast milk increased significantly with maternal age and fish consumption and decreased with maternal birth year, parity, and smoking. Total TEQ was associated with lower fat percentage (-0.45 s.d., CI: -0.89; -0.04), non-significantly with lower weight and length at 0 months, accelerated early height growth (increased ΔSDS) (ΔSDS 0-18 months: +0.77 s.d., CI: 0.34; 1.19) and early weight increase (ΔSDS 0-18: +0.52 s.d., CI: 0.03; 1.00), and increased IGF1 serum levels at 3 months (+13.9 ng/ml, CI: 2.3; 25.5). Environmental exposure to dioxin-like chemicals was associated with being skinny at birth and with higher infant levels of circulating IGF1 as well as accelerated early childhood growth (rapid catch-up growth).

Abstract
Exposure to organochlorine pesticides (OCP) has been shown to be associated with adverse thyroid function. The impact of exposure to selected OCPs on total serum thyroxine (TT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) was evaluated by analyzing data from the 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Oxychlordane, p,p'-DDE, trans-nonachlor, and heptachlor epoxide were selected for analysis. Regression models with logs of TSH and TT4 as dependent variables and OCP exposure, race/ethnicity, iodine and smoking status, total lipids and others as independent variables were fitted. TSH levels increased (p < 0.05) with increase in trans-nonachlor exposure for 20-39 year old iodine deficient males. TSH levels were higher when oxychlordane exposure was low than when the exposure was medium or high for 20-39 year old iodine deficient females (p < 0.05). For iodine deficient females, TT4 levels were lower when p,p'-DDE exposure was low than when it was medium (p < 0.05). For non-Hispanic blacks (NHB), TT4 levels decreased with increase in exposure to heptachlor epoxide (p < 0.05). For iodine replete males, TSH levels increased with increase in trans-nonachlor exposure (p < 0.05). For iodine replete females, (i) Mexican Americans (MA) had higher TSH levels when the exposure to oxychlordane was medium than when the exposure was low; (ii) for 60+years old, there was a positive association between TSH and heptachlor epoxide levels; and (iii) TT4 levels had an inverse association with trans-nonachlor and oxychlordane. In general though not always, (i) TSH and TT4 levels were lowest for the 20-39 years old and highest for the 60+years old (p < = 0.05), (ii) TSH and TT4 levels for iodine deficient males and females were lowest for NHB, highest for MA, and in-between for non-Hispanic white, and (iii) non-smokers had higher TSH and TT4 levels than smokers and in general, statistically significantly so.

Abstract
In human exposure studies involving Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), it is useful to establish when an individual was potentially exposed. Age dating PCB exposure is complex but assessments can be made because different PCB congeners have different residence times in the human body. The less chlorinated congeners generally tend to have shorter residence times because they are biotransformed and eliminated faster than more chlorinated congeners. Therefore, the presence of high proportions of less chlorinated congeners is often indicative of recent exposure. The 2003-04 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset contains results for the concentration of 37 PCBs in a sub-sample of the US population. Multivariate statistical analysis of the NHANES data showed that less chlorinated congeners are not always biotransformed faster than higher chlorinated compounds. For example, PCB 28 (a tri-chlorobiphenyl) appears to be more resistant to biotransformation than PCB 101 and 110 (penta-chlorobiphenyls). Using statistical analysis of the NHANES data in conjunction with previously published studies on PCB persistence in humans, it was possible to identify the structural relationships that determine if a PCB is likely to be from a recent exposure (termed 'episodic') or from steady state exposure. Congeners with chlorine atoms in the 2,5- and 2,3,6-positions appear to be more susceptible to biotransformation whereas congeners with chlorine bonds in the 2,3,4- 2,4,5- 3,4,5- and 2,3,4,5-positions appear to be more persistent. This work shows that future investigations to date PCB exposure would benefit from the analysis of a wide range of congeners, including the selection of key congeners based not only on the degree of chlorination but also on the positions of the chlorine atoms on the biphenyl.

Abstract
Effect of smoking and caffeine consumption (CC) on the levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) has not been adequately studied. Data from 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 1013) to simultaneously evaluate the effect of smoking and CC on levels of serum 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE-47), 2,2',4,4',5-pentabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE-99), 2,2',4,4',6-pentabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE-100), 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE-153), and their sum and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl (PBB-153) were used. Regression models were fitted with logs of PBDE and PBB as dependent variables and age, age(2), gender, body mass index (BMI), race/ethnicity, smoking status, fish/shellfish consumption status during the last 30 d, and CC as independent variables. For lipid-adjusted models, age was negatively associated while age(2) was positively associated with almost all PBDE models. The reverse was the case for PBB-153. Body mass index was found to be negatively associated with PBDE-153 and PBB-153. Levels of all whole weight PBDE increased with levels of total lipid. Smoking was not markedly associated with concentrations of either PBDE or PBB. Males displayed significantly higher levels of PBDE-153 and ΣPBDE. For the whole weight PBDE congeners 47, 99, and 100 and PBB-153, non-Hispanic black (NHB) males showed significantly higher levels than NHB females.

Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination survey for the years 2003-2010 were used (n = 1565) to evaluate the effect of age, parity, body mass index (BMI), race/ethnicity, pregnancy, iron (Fe) storage status, smoking status, and fish/shellfish consumption on the levels of urine barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), cesium (Cs), cobalt (Co), molybdenum (Mo), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), thallium (TI), tungsten (W), uranium (U), and mercury (Hg) for females aged 17-39 yr old. Regression analysis was used to fit models for each of the 11 metals. For Cd, Cs, TI, and Hg, age was positively associated with levels of these metals. Body mass index was negatively associated with levels of Cs, Co, and TI. Levels of Co, Mo, and W increased over the period 2003-2010. Over the same period, levels of Pb, Sb, and Hg declined. Non-Hispanic blacks showed lower levels of almost all metals compared to either Mexican American or other unclassified race/ethnicities. Non-Hispanic whites displayed higher levels than non-Hispanic blacks for 9 of 11 metals. Smokers displayed significantly higher levels of Pb, Sb, W, and U than nonsmokers but significantly lower levels of Cd and Mo than nonsmokers. Pregnancy was found to be associated with higher levels of Ba, Cs, Co, Mo, Pb, W, and Hg compared to nonpregnant females. Levels of Mo, Cs, and Cd declined significantly during the pregnancy period but levels of Co rose during the same period.

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey for the years 2003-2010 were used (n = 4700) to evaluate the effect of age, parity, body mass index (BMI), race/ethnicity, pregnancy, iron (Fe) storage status, smoking status, and fish/shellfish consumption on the levels of blood cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and total mercury (Hg)for females aged 17-39 years old. Regression analysis was used to fit models for each of the three metals. For all three metals, age was positively and BMI was negatively associated with levels of these metals in blood. Smokers had statistically significantly higher levels of Cd and Pb irrespective of race/ethnicity and Fe storage status as compared to nonsmokers. Novel to this study, pregnancy was found to be associated with significantly lower levels of Cd, Pb, and Hg irrespective of race/ethnicity and Fe storage status as compared to nonpregnant females. It is conceivable that pregnancy may thus accelerate clearance of these metals from blood. Fish/shellfish consumption was associated with higher levels of Hg but not with Cd levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the mortality risk associated with chronic dioxin exposure in the general U.S. populations. OBJECTIVE To explore the association between dioxin-like chemicals and mortality risk in a large population-based cohort study. METHODS The analysis included 2361 subjects aged 40 years or older from the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Exposure to a mixture of dioxin-like chemicals, including dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, and polychlorinated biphenyls was estimated using toxic equivalency values (TEQs) calculated with 2005 World Health Organization toxic equivalency factors. All-cause and cause-specific mortalities were obtained from the NHANES-linked follow-up data through December 31, 2006. Cox proportional-hazards models were applied to assess the associations of interest. RESULTS A total of 242 deaths occurred during the follow-up period, including 75 from cardiovascular disease and 72 from cancer. There was an increased mortality risk associated with logarithmically expressed dioxin TEQs for all-cause deaths (hazard ratio=1.19, 95% confidence interval=1.02-1.39, p=0.02). Similar graded dose-response trends were found for cardiovascular and cancer mortality which did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS In general, higher dioxin exposure is associated with an increased mortality risk among subjects aged 40 and above. The cause-specific analyses and responsible mechanisms will require further investigation.
