Traffic air pollution and risk of death from ovarian cancer in Taiwan: fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as a proxy marker

The impacts of reduction in ambient fine particulate air pollution on natural-cause mortality in Taiwan

Many epidemiologic studies have reported an association between high concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and increased mortality rates. Concurrently an association between decreased concentration of these airborne PM2.5 pollutants and a decline in mortality frequency was noted in certain investigations globally; however, only a very few of these studies were conducted in Asia. Taiwan was found to exhibit a 30% decline in ambient PM2.5 levels over the last 20 years. The aim of this ecological investigation was to examine the contribution of annual reductions in ambient PM2.5 to changes in age-standardized natural-cause mortality rates (ASRs) in 65 townships in Taiwan from 2006 to 2020 controlling for lung cancer mortality rate, physician density, and annual household income. Data demonstrated a 0.9/105 fall in adjusted ASR for every 10 ug/m3 reduction in mean annual PM2.5 level in Taiwan during this 14-year period, suggesting a significant association between reductions in ambient PM2.5 levels and decreases in natural-cause mortality rates.

Concordance between In Vitro and In Vivo Relative Toxic Potencies of Diesel Exhaust Particles from Different Biodiesel Blends

Diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) contribute to air pollution exposure-related adverse health impacts. Here, we examined in vitro, and in vivo toxicities of DEPs from a Caterpillar C11 heavy-duty diesel engine emissions using ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) and biodiesel blends (20% v/v) of canola (B20C), soy (B20S), or tallow-waste fry oil (B20T) in ULSD. The in vitro effects of DEPs (DEPULSD, DEPB20C, DEPB20S, and DEPB20T) in exposed mouse monocyte/macrophage cells (J774A.1) were examined by analyzing the cellular cytotoxicity endpoints (CTB, LDH, and ATP) and secreted proteins. The in vivo effects were assessed in BALB/c mice (n = 6/group) exposed to DEPs (250 µg), carbon black (CB), or saline via intratracheal instillation 24 h post-exposure. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cell counts, cytokines, lung/heart mRNA, and plasma markers were examined. In vitro cytotoxic potencies (e.g., ATP) and secreted TNF-α were positively correlated (p < 0.05) with in vivo inflammatory potency (BALF cytokines, lung/heart mRNA, and plasma markers). Overall, DEPULSD and DEPB20C appeared to be more potent compared to DEPB20S and DEPB20T. These findings suggested that biodiesel blend-derived DEP potencies can be influenced by biodiesel sources, and inflammatory process- was one of the potential underlying toxicity mechanisms. These observations were consistent across in vitro and in vivo exposures, and this work adds value to the health risk analysis of cleaner fuel alternatives.

Ambient particulate matter air pollution exposure and ovarian cancer incidence in the USA: An ecological study

OBJECTIVE

To investigate associations between air particulate matter of ≤2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5 ) and ovarian cancer.

DESIGN

County-level ecological study.

SETTING

Surveillance, epidemiology, and end results from a collection of state-level cancer registries across 744 counties. Data from the Environmental Protection Agency's network for PM2.5 monitoring was used to calculate trailing 5- and 10-year PM2.5 county-level values. County-level data on demographic characteristics were obtained from the American Community Survey.

POPULATION

A total of 98 751 patients with histologically confirmed ovarian cancer as a primary malignancy from 2000 to 2016.

METHODS

Generalised linear regression models were developed to estimate the association between PM2.5 and PM10 levels, over 5- and 10-year periods of exposure, and ovarian cancer risk, after accounting for county-level covariates.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Risk ratios for associations between ovarian cancer (both overall and specifically epithelial ovarian cancer) and PM2.5 levels.

RESULTS

For the 744 counties included, the average PM2.5 level from 1990 through 2018 was 11.75 μg/m3 (SD = 3.7) and the average PM10 level was 22.7 μg/m3 (SD = 5.7). After adjusting for county-level covariates, the overall annualised ovarian cancer incidence was significantly associated with increases in 5-year PM2.5 (RR = 1.11 per 10 units (μg/m3 ) increase, 95% CI 1.06-1.16). Similarly, when the analysis was limited to epithelial cell tumours and adjusted for county-level covariates there was a significant association with trailing 5-year PM2.5 exposure models (RR = 1.12 per 10 units increase, 95% CI 1.08-1.17). Likewise, 10-year PM2.5 exposure was associated with ovarian cancer overall and with epithelial ovarian cancer.

CONCLUSIONS

Higher county-level ambient PM2.5 levels are associated with 5- and 10-year incidences of ovarian cancer, as measurable in an ecological study.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) induces the stem cell-like properties of hepatocellular carcinoma by activating ROS/Nrf2/Keap1-mediated autophagy

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been linked to an increased incidence and mortality of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the impact of PM2.5 exposure on HCC progression and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effects of PM2.5 exposure on the stem cell-like properties of HCC cells. Our findings indicate that PM2.5 exposure significantly enhances the stemness of HCC cells (p < 0.01). Subsequently, male nude mice were divided into two groups (n = 8/group for tumor-bearing assay, n = 5/group for metastasis assay) for control and PM2.5 exposure. In vivo assays revealed that exposure to PM2.5 promoted the growth, metastasis, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of HCC cells (p < 0.01). Further exploration demonstrated that PM2.5 enhances the stemness of HCC cells by inducing cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation (p < 0.05). Mechanistic investigation indicated that elevated intracellular ROS inhibited kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) levels, promoting the upregulation and nucleus translocation of NFE2-like bZIP transcription factor 2 (Nrf2). This, in turn, induced autophagy activation, thereby promoting the stemness of HCC cells (p < 0.01). Our present study demonstrates the adverse effects of PM2.5 exposure on HCC development and highlights the mechanism of ROS/Nrf2/Keap1-mediated autophagy. For the first time, we reveal the impact of PM2.5 exposure on the poor prognosis-associated cellular phenotype of HCC and its underlying mechanism, which is expected to provide new theoretical basis for the improvement of public health.

Effects of long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate air pollution on all-cause mortality in Taiwan

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency's Integrated Science Assessment (ISA), there is a causal relationship between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and increased mortality rates. A similar association was also reported by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). While many studies are available on this relationship between PM exposure and elevated mortality frequency in Europe and North America, there are limited investigations in Asia. Thus, the aim of this study was to perform an ecological investigation to determine the relationship between exposure to ambient PM2.5 levels and all-cause mortality in 66 in Taiwan municipalities. To undertake this investigation, annual PM2.5 levels and age-standardized all-cause mortality rates were calculated for male and female residents of these areas from 2010 to 2020. Weighted-multiple regression analyses were used to obtain adjusted risk ratio (RR) controlling for possible confounding by urbanization level, physician density, and annual mean household income. Annual PM2.5 levels of each municipality were divided into tertiles. Data demonstrated that men residing in areas with intermediate tertile PM2.5 levels (21.06 to 27.29 µg/m3) and the highest tertiles levels (27.30-33.11 µg/m3) exhibited adjusted RRs of 1.06 (95% CI = 1.03-1.08) and 1.13 (95% CI = 1.10-1.16), respectively. Women in these locations displayed a similar risk, 1.03 (0.99-1.06) and 1.07 (1.04-1.11), respectively. These findings indicate that ambient exposure to PM2.5 increased risk for all-cause mortality rates in both men and women in Taiwan during this time period.

Exposure to air pollution and risk of ovarian cancer: a review

OBJECTIVES

Exposure to air pollution has destructive health consequences and a potential role in ovarian cancer etiology. We conducted a systematic review of the studies assessing the associations between ovarian malignancy and exposure to air pollutants.

CONTENT

The included studies were categorized based on types of measured ambient air pollutants, including particulate matter (five studies), gases (two studies), air pollutant mixtures (eight studies), and traffic indicators for air pollution (only one study). Because of the heterogeneity of quantitative data of the reviewed studies, we qualitatively reviewed the air pollution role in ovarian cancer risk with representing incidence and/or the mortality rate of ovarian cancer in related with air pollution. Nine studies were ecological study design. Except for one, all studies confirmed a positive correlation between exposure to ambient air pollution (AAP) and increased ovarian cancer risks.

SUMMARY

We concluded that prolonged air pollution exposure through possible mechanisms, estrogen-like effects, and genetic mutations might affect ovarian tumorigenesis. This research surveyed the limitations of the previous studies, including issues with ambient air pollution surveillance and assessing the exposure, determining the air pollution sources, data analysis approaches, and study designs.

OUTLOOK

Finally, the authors provide suggestions for future environmental epidemiological inquiries on the impact of exposure to ambient air pollution on ovarian malignancy.

Cancer status in the Occupied Palestinian Territories: types; incidence; mortality; sex, age, and geography distribution; and possible causes

Cancer is a disease in which some cells of the body grow uncontrollably and occasionally spread to other parts of the body. With a group of more than 100 different types, cancer can start almost anywhere in the body. Defective cells may form a mass called a tumor which can be cancerous (malignant), which grows and spreads to other parts of the body, or benign that can grow but not spread throughout the body. In 2021, more than 10 million people died of cancer worldwide (1 out of 6 deaths). This paper has thoroughly investigated the cancer status in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), in terms of its various types; incidence; mortality; sex, age, and geography distribution; and potential causes. In the OPT, with a population of 5.35 million, cancer mortality was 14% in 2016, being the second cause of death after cardiovascular diseases accounting 30.6% of all causes of death. Cancer mortality in the OPT increased by 136% from 2000 to 2016, and by 14% from 2016 to 2020. In addition to other types of cancer in the OPT, its main types are lung (highest in males), breast (highest in females), colorectal (highest in both sexes), and leukemia (highest in children). The high rates of different types of cancer in the OPT can be attributed to various causes, including those related to environmental pollution, nutrition, stress, and lifestyle factors (smoking, lack of activity, increased dependence on technologies, etc.), whereas only 10-30% of cancer cases are attributed to genetics.

PM2.5 exposure and its interaction of oxidative balance score on ovarian cancer survival: A prospective cohort study

Recent evidence advises particles with a diameter of 2.5 µm or less (PM_2.5) might be a prognostic factor for ovarian cancer (OC) survival. The oxidative balance score (OBS) incorporates diet-lifestyle factors to estimate individuals' anti-oxidant exposure status which may be relevant to cancer prognosis. We aimed to investigate the roles of PM_2.5, and OBS and their interaction in OC prognosis. 663 patients with OC were enrolled in the current study. Satellite-derived annual average exposures to PM_2.5 based on patients' residential locations. The OBS was calculated based on 16 different diet-lifestyle components derived using an acknowledged self-reported questionnaire. The Cox regression model was performed to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for overall survival (OS). We also assessed the effect of modification between PM_2.5 and OS by OBS via interaction terms. During a median follow-up of 37.57 (interquartile:35.27-40.17) months, 123 patients died. Compared to low-concentration PM_2.5 exposure, high PM_2.5 during 1 year before diagnosis was associated with worse OC survival (HR= 1.19, 95% CI = 1.01-1.42). We observed an improved OS with the highest compared with the lowest OBS (HR = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.27-0.79, P for trend < 0.05). Notably, we also found an additive interaction between low OBS and high exposure to PM_2.5, with the corresponding associations of PM_2.5 being more pronounced among participants with lower OBS (HR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.09-1.86). PM_2.5 may blunt OC survival, but high OBS represented an antioxidative performance that could alleviate the adverse association of PM_2.5 and OS.

Association of long-term particulate matter exposure with all-cause mortality among patients with ovarian cancer: A prospective cohort

BACKGROUND

Evidence of the association between particles with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM_2.5) in long term and ovarian cancer (OC) mortality is limited.

METHODS

This prospective cohort study analyzed data collected between 2015 and 2020 from 610 newly diagnosed OC patients, aged 18-79 years. The residential average PM_2.5 concentrations 10 years before the date of OC diagnosis were assessed by random forest models at a 1 km × 1 km resolution. Cox proportional hazard models fully adjusted for the covariates (including age at diagnosis, education, physical activity, kitchen ventilation, FIGO stage, and comorbidities) and distributed lag non-linear models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of PM_2.5 and all-cause mortality of OC.

RESULTS

During a median follow-up of 37.6 months (interquartile: 24.8-50.5 months), 118 (19.34 %) deaths were confirmed among 610 OC patients. One-year PM_2.5 exposure levels before OC diagnosis was significantly associated with an increase in all-cause mortality among OC patients (single-pollutant model: HR = 1.22, 95 % CI: 1.02-1.46; multi-pollutant models: HR = 1.38, 95 % CI: 1.10-1.72). Furthermore, during 1 to 10 years prior to diagnosis, the lag-specific effect of long-term PM_2.5 exposure on the all-cause mortality of OC had a risk increase for lag 1-6 years, and the exposure-response relationship was linear. Of note, significant interactions between several immunological indicators as well as solid fuel use for cooking and ambient PM_2.5 concentrations were observed.

CONCLUSION

Higher ambient PM_2.5 concentrations were associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality among OC patients, and there was a lag effect in long-term PM_2.5 exposure.

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and site-specific cancer mortality: A difference-in-differences analysis in Jiangsu province, China

BACKGROUND

Accumulating studies have reported that chronic exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) can lead to adverse effects on lung cancer mortality; however, such chronic effects are less clear for mortality from other site-specific cancers.

OBJECTIVE

To explore the causal effect of long-term PM_2.5 exposure on mortality from all-site and a variety of site-specific cancers in Jiangsu province, China during 2015-2020 using a difference-in-differences analysis.

METHODS

For each of 53 county-based spatial units in Jiangsu province, we calculated annual death counts for all-site cancer and 23 site-specific cancers. Using a validated high-resolution PM_2.5 grid dataset, long-term PM_2.5 exposure of a spatial unit within a given year was evaluated as the average of population-weighted annual concentrations during recent 10 years. Conditional Poisson regression models were employed to evaluate exposure-response associations adjusting for spatial and temporal variables, seasonal temperatures, relative humidity, and gross domestic product (GDP).

RESULTS

During the study period, we identified 947,337 adult cancer deaths in Jiangsu province. Each 1 μg/m³ increment in PM_2.5 exposure was significantly associated with a 2.7% increase in the risk of all-site cancer mortality. PM_2.5-mortality associations were also observed in cancer of lip, oral cavity and pharynx, stomach, colorectum, pancreas, lung, bone and joints, ovary, prostate, and lymphoma (all adjusted P < 0.05), with the relative risks ranging from 1.028 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.011, 1.046) for stomach cancer to 1.201 (95% CI: 1.120, 1.308) for bone and joints cancers. Exposure-response curves showed that these associations were close to linearity, though most of them had increasing slopes at high exposure levels. Overall, women and subjects in low GDP regions were more vulnerable to PM_2.5 exposures.

CONCLUSIONS

Long-term exposure to ambient PM_2.5 contributes to a higher risk of mortality from multiple site-specific cancers.

Risk of death from liver cancer in relation to long-term exposure to fine particulate air pollution in Taiwan

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), airborne fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), which is categorized as a Group I carcinogen, was found to lead to predominantly lung as well as other cancer types in humans. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is endemic in Taiwan where it is the second and fourth foremost cause of cancer deaths in men and women, respectively. Taiwan's mortality rates for liver cancer vary considerably from one region to another, suggesting that the environment may exert some influence on deaths attributed to liver cancer. The aim of this investigation was to perform an ecologic study to examine the possible link between ambient PM_2.5 levels and risk of liver cancer in 66 in Taiwan municipalities. To undertake this investigation, annual PM_2.5 levels and age-standardized liver cancer mortality rates were calculated for male and female residents of these areas from 2010 to 2019. Data were tested using weighted-multiple regression analyses to compute adjusted risk ratio (RR) controlling for urbanization level and physician density. Annual PM_2.5 levels of each municipality were divided into tertiles. The adjusted RRs for males residing in those areas with intermediate tertile levels (21.85 to 28.21 ug/m³) and the highest tertiles levels (28.22-31.23 ug/m³) of PM_2.5 were 1.29 (95% CI = 1.25-1.46) and 1.41 (95% CI = 1.36-1.46), respectively. Women in these locations shared a similar risk, 1.32 (1.25-1.4) and 1.41 (1.34-1.49), respectively. Evidence indicated that PM_2.5 increased risk of mortality rates attributed to liver cancer in both men and women in Taiwan.

Association between Breast Cancer and Second Primary Lung Cancer among the Female Population in Taiwan: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study

PURPOSE

A special association between breast cancer and second primary lung cancer in Taiwanese women has been discovered not only in clinical practice, but also in a large population-based study. We hereby investigate the association between breast cancer and second primary lung cancer in Taiwanese women.

METHODS

This study was conducted from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) from Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI). Patients older than 18 years old and hospitalized with a first diagnosis of breast cancer during 2000 to 2012 were enrolled in the breast cancer group. Patients who were cancer free were frequency-matched with the breast cancer group by age (every five-year span) and index year. The ratio of breast cancer group to non-breast cancer group was 1:4. The event as the outcome in this study was lung cancer. The comorbidities viewed as important confounding factors included coronary artery disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hyperlipidemia, tuberculosis, chronic kidney disease, and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. We estimated the hazard ratios (HRs), adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk of lung cancer in the breast cancer group and non-breast cancer group using Cox proportional hazard models. Sensitivity analysis was also done using propensity score matching. All of the statistical analyses were performed using SAS statistical software, version 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC).

RESULTS

There were 94,451 breast cancer patients in the breast cancer group and 377,804 patients in the non-breast cancer group in this study. After being stratified by age, urbanization level, and comorbidities, the patients with breast cancer had a significantly higher risk of lung cancer compared with the patients without breast cancer, particularly for those who aged between 20 and 49 years (aHR = 2.10, 95% CI = 1.71-2.58), 50 and 64 years (aHR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.15-1.58), and those without any comorbidities (aHR = 1.92, 95% CI = 1.64-2.23).

CONCLUSION

Patients with breast cancer had a significantly higher risk of developing second primary lung cancer compared with patients without breast cancer, particularly in younger groups and in those without any comorbidities. The special association may be attributed to some potential risk factors such as genetic susceptibility and long-term exposure to PM2.5, and is supposed to increase public awareness. Further studies are necessary given the fact that inherited genotypes, different subtypes of breast cancer and lung cancer, and other unrecognized etiologies may play vital roles in both cancers' development.

Association between fine particulate air pollution and the risk of death from lung cancer in Taiwan

Airborne fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) has been classified as a Group I carcinogen leading to lung cancer in humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In Taiwan, where there is a growing incidence of this disease, lung cancer is currently the leading cause of cancer-associated deaths in women and second leading cause of deaths in men. Because tobacco use is rare in Taiwan, especially amongst women, the high incidence of this type of cancer was suggested to be attributed to the other external contaminants, including airborne PM₂ pollution. In this ecologic study, a possible association between ambient air PM_2.5 exposure and likelihood of death attributed to lung cancer was examined in Taiwan in 66 municipalities. Annual PM_2.5 levels and age-standardized lung cancer mortality rates for male and female residents were calculated for years 2010 to 2019. Weighted-multiple regression was applied to analyze our data, adjusting for level of urbanization and physician density. For males, the adjusted risk ratios (RRs) for lung cancer mortality were 1.01 for municipalities with PM_2.5 levels 21.85-28.21 ug/m3 and 1.07 for municipalities with 28.22-31.23 ug/m3, compared to those with the lowest PM_2.5 levels. For females, these adjusted RRs were 0.99 and 1.06, respectively. Data demonstrated an association between chronic exposure to high levels of PM_2.5 and increased likelihood of death attributed to lung cancer for both men and women in Taiwan. Further studies are needed to explore the relationship between PM_2.5 air pollution exposure and risk of lung cancer histologic subtype.

Research progress on the association between environmental pollutants and the resistance mechanism of PARP inhibitors in ovarian cancer

The occurrence and progression of ovarian cancer are closely related to genetics and environmental pollutants. Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors have been a major breakthrough in the history of ovarian cancer treatment. PARP is an enzyme responsible for post-translational modification of proteins and repair of single-stranded DNA damage. PARP inhibitors can selectively inhibit PARP function, resulting in a synthetic lethal effect on tumor cells defective in homologous recombination repair. However, with large-scale application, drug resistance also inevitably appears. For PARP inhibitors, the diversity and complexity of drug resistance mechanisms have always been difficult problems in clinical treatment. Herein, we mainly summarized the research progress of DNA damage repair and drug resistance mechanisms related to PARP inhibitors and the impact of environmental pollutants on DNA damage repair to aid the development prospects and highlight urgent problems to be solved.

Ambient air pollution and ovarian cancer survival in California

OBJECTIVE

To examine whether exposure to ambient ozone, particulate matter with diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM_2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and distance to major roadways (DTR) impact ovarian cancer-specific survival, while considering differences by stage, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

METHODS

Women diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer from 1996 to 2014 were identified through the California Cancer Registry and followed through 2016. Women's geocoded addresses were linked to pollutant exposure data and averaged over the follow-up period. Pollutants were considered independently and in multi-pollutant models. Cox proportional hazards models assessed hazards of disease-specific death due to environmental exposures, controlling for important covariates, with additional models stratified by stage at diagnosis, race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status.

RESULTS

PM_2.5 and NO₂, but not ozone or DTR, were significantly associated with survival in univariate models. In a multi-pollutant model for PM_2.5, ozone, and DTR, an interquartile range increase in PM_2.5 (Hazard Ratio [HR], 1.45; 95% Confidence Interval [CI], 1.41-1.49) was associated with worse prognosis. Similarly, in the multi-pollutant model with NO₂, ozone, and DTR, women with higher NO₂ exposures (HR for 20.0-30.0 ppb, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.25-1.36 and HR for >30.0 ppb, 2.48; 95% CI, 2.32-2.66) had greater mortality compared to the lowest exposed (<20.0 ppb). Stratified results show the effects of the pollutants differed by race/ethnicity and were magnified among women diagnosed in early stages.

CONCLUSIONS

Our analyses suggest that greater exposure to NO₂ and PM_2.5 may adversely impact ovarian cancer-specific survival, independent of sociodemographic and treatment factors. These findings warrant further study.

Maternal proximity to petrochemical industrial parks and risk of premature rupture of membranes

BACKGROUND

Living near petrochemical industries has been reported to increase the risks of adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight and preterm delivery. However, evidence regarding the role of petrochemical exposure in pregnancy complications remains limited. This study evaluated the association between maternal proximity to petrochemical industrial parks (PIPs) during pregnancy and the occurrence of premature rupture of membranes (PROM).

METHODS

We performed a population-based 1:3 case-control study by using the 2004-2014 Taiwanese Birth Certificate Database. Birth records reported as stillbirth or bearing congenital anomalies were excluded. Cases were newborns reported to have PROM, whereas controls were randomly sampled from those without any pregnancy complications by matching birth year and urbanization index of the residential township. The proximity to PIPs was evaluated by calculating the distance to the nearest PIP of the maternal residential township during pregnancy. Furthermore, petrochemical exposure opportunity, accounting for monthly prevailing wind direction, was quantified during the entire gestational period. We applied conditional logistic regression models to evaluate the associations.

RESULTS

In total, 29371 PROM cases were reported during the study period, with a corresponding 88113 healthy controls sampled. The results revealed that living within a 3-km radius of PIPs during pregnancy would increase the risk of PROM (odds ratio [OR] = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.66-1.87). Furthermore, compared with the lowest exposed group, those with high petrochemical exposure opportunity had a significantly increased risk of PROM occurrence (OR = 1.69-1.75). The adverse effects remained robust in the subgroup analysis for both term- and preterm-PROM.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of the present work provide evidence that living near PIPs during pregnancy would increase the risk of PROM, and additional studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

Land Use Impacts on Particulate Matter Levels in Seoul, South Korea: Comparing High and Low Seasons

Seoul, a city in South Korea, experiences high particulate matter (PM) levels well above the recommended standards suggested by the World Health Organization. As concerns about public health and everyday lives are being raised, this study investigates the effects of land use on PM levels in Seoul. Specifically, it attempts to identify which land use types increase or decrease PM10 and PM2.5 levels and compare the effects between high and low seasons using two sets of land use classifications: one coarser and the other finer. A series of partial least regression models identifies that industrial land use increases the PM levels in all cases. It is also reported that residential and commercial land uses associated with lower density increase these levels. Other uses, such as green spaces and road, show mixed or unclear effects. The findings of this study may inform planners and policymakers about how they can refine future land use planning and development practice in cities that face similar challenges.

Dietary Intake of Acrylamide and Risk of Breast, Endometrial, and Ovarian Cancers: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-analysis

Acrylamide is a probable human carcinogen. Aside from occupational exposures and smoking, diet is the main source of exposure in humans. We performed a systematic review of the association between estimated dietary intake of acrylamide and risk of female breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancers in nonexperimental studies published through February 25, 2020, and conducted a dose-response meta-analysis. We identified 18 papers covering 10 different study populations: 16 cohort and two case-control studies. Acrylamide intake was associated with a slightly increased risk of ovarian cancer, particularly among never smokers. For endometrial cancer, risk was highest at intermediate levels of exposure, whereas the association was more linear and positive among never smokers. For breast cancer, we found evidence of a null or inverse relation between exposure and risk, particularly among never smokers and postmenopausal women. In a subgroup analysis limited to premenopausal women, breast cancer risk increased linearly with acrylamide intake starting at 20 μg/day of intake. High acrylamide intake was associated with increased risks of ovarian and endometrial cancers in a relatively linear manner, especially among never smokers. Conversely, little association was observed between acrylamide intake and breast cancer risk, with the exception of premenopausal women.

Associations between ambient air pollution and cancer incidence in Taiwan: an ecological study of geographical variations

BACKGROUND

Air pollution is a global public health concern. The World Health Organization has recently set up a goal of saving 7 million people globally by 2030 from air pollution related death. We conducted an ecological study of geographical variation to explore the association between air pollution (specifically, particulate matter <2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter [PM2.5], particulate matter <10 μm in aerodynamic diameter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide, and ozone) and cancer incidence in Taiwan, from 2012 to 2016.

METHODS

In this study, the yearly average concentrations of each air pollutant at 75 air quality monitoring stations were calculated, and using the kriging method, the concentrations were extrapolated to each and every geographical central point of 349 local administrative areas of Taiwan. Spearman rank correlation coefficients between the age-adjusted cancer incidence rates and various air pollutants were calculated by stratifying genders and urbanization degrees of the local administrative areas. A total of 70 correlation coefficients were calculated.

RESULTS

In total, 17 correlation coefficients were significantly positive at an alpha level of 0.05. Among these, four correlation coefficients between the age-adjusted cancer incidence rates and PM2.5 levels remained significant after Bonferroni correction. For men in developing towns, general towns, and aged towns and for women in aged towns, the age-adjusted cancer incidence rates increased 13.1 (95% confidence interval [CI], 8.8-17.6), 11 (95% CI, 5.6-16.4), 16.7 (95% CI, 6.9-26.4), and 11.9 (95% CI, 5.6-18.2) per 100,000 populations, respectively, for every 1 μg/m3 increment in PM2.5 concentrations.

CONCLUSIONS

A significantly positive correlation was observed between the PM2.5 level and cancer incidence rate after multiple testing correction.

Methylation at cg05575921 of a smoking-related gene (AHRR) in non-smoking Taiwanese adults residing in areas with different PM2.5 concentrations

BACKGROUND

DNA methylation is associated with cancer, metabolic, neurological, and autoimmune disorders. Hypomethylation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor repressor (AHRR) especially at cg05575921 is associated with smoking and lung cancer. Studies on the association between AHRR methylation at cg05575921 and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) other than smoking are limited. The aim of our study was to assess the pattern of blood DNA methylation at cg05575921 in non-smoking Taiwanese adults living in areas with different PM_2.5 levels.

METHODS

Data on blood DNA methylation, smoking, and residence were retrieved from the Taiwan Biobank dataset (2008-2015). Current and former smokers, as well as individuals with incomplete information were excluded from the current study. The final analysis included 708 participants (279 men and 429 women) aged 30-70 years. PM_2.5 levels have been shown to increase as one moves from the northern through central towards southern Taiwan. Based on this trend, the study areas were categorized into northern, north-central, central, and southern regions.

RESULTS

Living in PM_2.5 areas was associated with lower methylation levels: compared with the northern area (reference area), living in north-central, central, and southern areas was associated with lower methylation levels at cg05575921. However, only methylation levels in those living in central and southern areas were significant (β = - 0.01003, P = 0.009 and β = - 0.01480, P < 0.001, respectively. Even though methylation levels in those living in the north-central area were not statistically significant, the test for linear trend was significant (P < 0.001). When PM_2.5 was included in the regression model, a unit increase in PM_2.5 was associated with 0.00115 (P < 0.001) lower cg05575921 methylation levels.

CONCLUSION

Living in PM_2.5 areas was inversely associated with blood AHRR methylation levels at cg05575921. The methylation levels were lowest in participants residing in southern followed by central and north-central areas. Moreover, when PM_2.5 was included in the regression model, it was inversely associated with methylation levels at cg05575921. Blood methylation at cg05575921 (AHRR) in non-smokers might indicate different exposures to PM_2.5 and lung cancer which is a PM_2.5-related disease.

Main components of pomegranate, ellagic acid and luteolin, inhibit metastasis of ovarian cancer by down-regulating MMP2 and MMP9

Ovarian cancer is the third most common cancer in the female reproductive organs and epithelial ovarian cancer has the highest lethality of all gynecological cancers. Pomegranate fruit juice (PFJ) has been shown to inhibit the growth of several types of cancer other than ovarian cancer. In this study, we exposed the ovarian cancer cell line A2780 to PFJ and two of its components (ellagic acid and luteolin). MTT and wound healing assays demonstrated that all three treatments suppressed the proliferation and migration of the ovarian cancer cells. In addition, western blotting and ELISA assays showed that the expression levels of MMP2 and MMP9 gradually decreased after treatment with increasing concentrations of ellagic acid and luteolin. To confirm our findings in the in vitro experiments, we used another ovarian cancer cell line, ES-2, in nude mice experiments. All three treatments inhibited tumor growth without obvious side-effects. Furthermore, compared with the control group, the expression levels of MMP2 and MMP9 were depressed. Ellagic acid induced a greater effect than luteolin, suggesting that ellagic acid might be a promising candidate for further preclinical testing for treatment of human ovarian cancer.

Impact of community disadvantage and air pollution burden on geographic disparities of ovarian cancer survival in California

Ovarian cancer survival varies geographically throughout California. The objective of this study is to determine the impact of living in disadvantaged communities on spatial patterns of survival disparities. Including a bivariate spatial smooth of geographic location within the Cox proportional hazard models is an effective approach for spatial analyses of cancer survival. Women diagnosed with advanced Stage IIIC/IV epithelial ovarian cancer (1996-2006) were identified from the California Cancer Registry. The impact of living in disadvantaged communities, as measured by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment cumulative CalEnviroScreen 2.0 score, on geographic disparities in survival was assessed while controlling for age, tumor characteristics, quality of care, and race. Community-level air quality indicators and socioeconomic status (SES) were also independently examined in secondary analyses. The Cox proportional hazard spatial methods are available in the MapGAM package implemented in R. An increase in the community disadvantage from the 5th (less disadvantage) to the 95th percentile (more disadvantage) was significantly associated with poorer ovarian cancer survival (hazard ratio [HR], 1.16; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07-1.26). Ozone levels and SES were the most influential indicators on geographic disparities that warrant further investigation. The use of a bivariate smoother of location within the survival model allows for more advanced spatial analyses for exploring potential air quality-related predictors of geographic disparities.

Association between air pollution and mammographic breast density in the Breast Cancer Surveilance Consortium

Background

Mammographic breast density is a well-established strong risk factor for breast cancer. The environmental contributors to geographic variation in breast density in urban and rural areas are poorly understood. We examined the association between breast density and exposure to ambient air pollutants (particulate matter <2.5 μm in diameter (PM_2.5) and ozone (O₃)) in a large population-based screening registry.

Methods

Participants included women undergoing mammography screening at imaging facilities within the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (2001–2009). We included women aged ≥40 years with known residential zip codes before the index mammogram (n = 279,967). Breast density was assessed using the American College of Radiology’s Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) four-category breast density classification. PM_2.5 and O₃ estimates for grids across the USA (2001–2008) were obtained from the US Environmental Protection Agency Hierarchical Bayesian Model (HBM). For the majority of women (94%), these estimates were available for the year preceding the mammogram date. Association between exposure to air pollutants and density was estimated using polytomous logistic regression, adjusting for potential confounders.

Results

Women with extremely dense breasts had higher mean PM_2.5 and lower O₃ exposures than women with fatty breasts (8.97 vs. 8.66 ug/m³ and 33.70 vs. 35.82 parts per billion (ppb), respectively). In regression analysis, women with heterogeneously dense vs. scattered fibroglandular breasts were more likely to have higher exposure to PM_2.5 (fourth vs. first quartile odds ratio (OR) = 1.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.16 − 1.23). Women with extremely dense vs. scattered fibroglandular breasts were less likely to have higher levels of ozone exposure (fourth vs. first quartile OR = 0.80, 95% CI 0.73–0.87).

Conclusion

Exposure to PM_2.5 and O₃ may in part explain geographical variation in mammographic density. Further studies are warranted to determine the causal nature of these associations.

Cancer Mortality Risks from Long-term Exposure to Ambient Fine Particle

BACKGROUND

Few studies have assessed long-term effects of particulate matter (PM) with aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 μm (PM2.5) on mortality for causes of cancer other than the lung; we assessed the effects on multiple causes. In Hong Kong, most people live and work in urban or suburban areas with high-rise buildings. This facilitates the estimation of PM2.5 exposure of individuals, taking into account the height of residence above ground level for assessment of the long-term health effects with sufficient statistical power.

METHODS

We recruited 66,820 persons who were ≥65 in 1998 to 2001 and followed up for mortality outcomes until 2011. Annual concentrations of PM at their residential addresses were estimated using PM2.5 concentrations measured at fixed-site monitors, horizontal-vertical locations, and satellite data. We used Cox regression model to assess the HR of mortality for cancer per 10 μg/m(3) increase of PM2.5 RESULTS: PM2.5 was associated with increased risk of mortality for all causes of cancer [HR, 1.22 (95% CI, 1.11-1.34)] and for specific cause of cancer in upper digestive tract [1.42 (1.06-1.89)], digestive accessory organs [1.35 (1.06-1.71)] in all subjects; breast [1.80 (1.26-2.55)] in females; and lung [1.36 (1.05-1.77)] in males.

CONCLUSIONS

Long-term exposures to PM2.5 are associated with elevated risks of cancer in various organs.

The effect of ambient exposure to PM2.5 on the transfusion usage of blood components and adverse transfusion reactions in the haze weather

BACKGROUND

Accumulating evidence has shown that ambient exposure to PM_2.5, especially in the haze weather, increased the risk of various diseases. However, the association of air pollution status with blood transfusion utilization and the prevalence and severity of adverse transfusion reactions remain to be clarified.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The data of monthly transfusion usage of blood components, adverse transfusion reactions, as well as PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ levels from 2013 to 2015 were obtained.

RESULTS

During the study interval, both PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ levels were significantly increased in the haze weather when compared with the non-haze weather. The utilization of total blood components per patient-month in the haze weather was prone to be increased when compared with that in the non-haze weather (13.28 ± 1.66 vs. 12.33 ± 1.30, p = 0.068). The usage of RBC products per patient-month in the haze weather was significantly increased when compared with that in the non-haze weather (4.39 ± 0.39 vs. 4.07 ± 0.30, p = 0.009). There was no obvious difference between the haze and non-haze weathers for the usage of platelet and plasma products per patient-month. Besides, no definite differences of the prevalence and severity of transfusion-associated adverse reaction were observed between the haze and non-haze weathers.

CONCLUSION

Our study first indicated that transfusion utilization, particularly the RBC products, was significantly increased in the haze weather when compared with that in the non-haze weather. There was no obvious association of air pollution with the prevalence and severity of adverse transfusion reactions and further research is required.

Air pollution exposure increases the risk of rheumatoid arthritis: A longitudinal and nationwide study

OBJECTIVE

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been associated with inhaled pollutants in several studies, and it is a disease of chronic inflammation. The association between air pollution and the risk of RA remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted this nationwide, retrospective, sex-stratification study to evaluate this association.

METHODS

We collected data from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID), maintained by the Taiwan Bureau of National Health Insurance, and the Taiwan Air Quality-Monitoring Database (TAQMD), released by the Taiwan Environmental Protection Agency. The TAQMD provides the daily concentrations of particulate matter with the aerodynamic diameter <2.5μm (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from 74 ambient air quality-monitoring stations distributed all over Taiwan during 1998-2010. The LHID and TAQMD were linked according to the residential areas of insurants and the areas where the air quality-monitoring stations were located. A residential area was defined according to the location of the clinic and hospital that treated acute upper respiratory tract infections. The yearly average air pollutant concentrations were categorized into 4 levels based on quartiles. We evaluated the risk of RA in residents exposed to 4 levels of PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations.

RESULTS

We detected an increased risk of RA in participants exposed to PM2.5 and NO2. Among four quartiles of NO2 concentration, namely Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4, the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) in Q2, Q3, and Q4 compared with that in Q1 were 1.07 (95% confidence interval [CI]=0.76-1.50), 1.63 (95% CI=1.16-2.31),and 1.49 (95% CI=1.05-2.12), respectively. Regarding the PM2.5 concentrations, the aHRs after exposure to the Q2, Q3, and Q4 levels were 1.22 (95% CI=0.85-1.74), 1.15 (95% CI=0.82-1.62), and 0.79 (95% CI=0.53-1.16), respectively.

CONCLUSION

The results of this nationwide study suggest an increased risk of RA in residents exposed to NO2.

Metals compositions of indoor PM2.5, health risk assessment, and birth outcomes in Lanzhou, China

The study aimed to investigate the metal compositions in indoor PM2.5 and the potential health risks they pose to residents of an urban area in China. A total of 41 and 54 households were surveyed in February and September 2013, respectively. The results showed that the indoor concentrations of metals varied depending on the types of cooking fuels used. All measured concentrations of metals were highest among households using coal for cooking. In the majority of households, non-carcinogenic risks were posed by the use of coal. The carcinogenic risks posed by chromium (VI) and arsenic were generally higher among households using coal for cooking than among those using gas or electricity. The multivariate linear regression model suggested a potential adverse effect from arsenic and cadmium on birth weight and gestational weeks. This study also found that cooking fuel was the most significant factor that contributed to the differences in concentrations of metals in indoor PM2.5 and highlighted the importance of using clean energy for cooking and heating.

Correlation Between Nitrogen Dioxide as an Air Pollution Indicator and Breast Cancer: a Systematic Review and Meta- Analysis

BACKGROUND

The aim of this systematic review was to study the relationship between exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the ambient air and breast cancer incidence.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A systematic review was performed based on the MOOSE guideline for review of observational studies. We searched five online databases (PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, EBSCO, and Scopus) from their conception to June 2014. A pooled estimate of the correlation between NO2 exposure and breast cancer incidence was calculated using Pearson's correlation coefficient.

RESULTS

A total of 654 titles were retrieved in the initial search of the databases. Further refinement and screening of the retrieved studies produced a total of five studies from four countries. The studies included three ecological studies (aggregate level) and two individual based studies (one prospective cohort and the other one a case-control study). The ecological studies were pooled and the meta-analysis of correlation coefficient without z transformation showed a pooled estimate of r = 0.89 with 95% CI of 0.84 to 0.95. Using z transformation, the pooled r was 1.38 with 95%CI of 1.11 to 1.59. No significant heterogeneity between studies was observed. Following a sensitivity analysis and the removal of each study from pooled analysis we did not see any significant change in the pooled estimate.

CONCLUSIONS

It was concluded that there is a tendency toward a weak association between exposure to NO2 in ambient air and breast cancer at the individual level and a significant association at the aggregate level.

Seasonal concentrations, contamination levels, and health risk assessment of arsenic and heavy metals in the suspended particulate matter from an urban household environment in a metropolitan city, Beijing, China

The levels and health risks of arsenic and heavy metals (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected from an urban household environment in Beijing of China for 12 months were investigated. The mean concentrations of the studied toxic elements were higher and lower than crustal abundance and PM2.5 in the urban outdoors of Beijing. The concentrations of the studied elements displayed significant seasonality. The highest concentrations of the total elements occurred in winter, followed by autumn, while the lowest concentrations were recorded in summer. Based on the calculated values of enrichment factor (EF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo), the levels for As and Cu were heavily contaminated, while those for Cd, Pb, and Zn were extremely contaminated. As and Pb might pose risks to children and adults via ingestion exposure. The accumulative risks of multi-elements resulted from dermal contact and inhalation exposures were not negligible. More attention should be paid to reducing the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks posed by the toxic elements bound to urban household SPM particles via ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact exposure.

The effects of fine particulate air pollution on daily mortality: a case-crossover study in a subtropical city, Taipei, Taiwan

This study was undertaken to determine whether there was an association between PM_2.5 levels and daily mortality in Taipei, Taiwan, the largest metropolitan city with a subtropical climate. Daily mortality, air pollution, and weather data for Taipei were obtained for the period from 2006–2008. The relative risk of daily mortality was estimated using a time-stratified case-crossover approach, controlling for weather variables, day of the week, seasonality, and long-term time trends. For the single pollutant model, PM_2.5 showed association with total mortality both on warm (>23 °C) and cool days (<23 °C). There is no indication of an association between PM_2.5 and risk of death due to respiratory diseases both on warm and cool days. PM_2.5 had effects on the risk of death from cardiovascular diseases only on cool days. In the two-pollutant models, PM_2.5 remained effects on the risk of mortality for all cause and cardiovascular disease after the inclusion of SO₂ and O₃ both on warm and cool days. This study provides evidence that short-term exposure to PM_2.5 increased the risk of death for all cause and cardiovascular disease.

Fine particulate air pollution and hospital admissions for congestive heart failure: a case-crossover study in Taipei

This study was undertaken to determine whether there was an association between fine particles (PM₂.₅) levels and hospital admissions for congestive heart failure (CHF) in Taipei, Taiwan. Hospital admissions for CHF and ambient air pollution data for Taipei were obtained for the period 2006-2010. The relative risk of hospital admissions was estimated using a case-crossover approach, controlling for weather variables, day of the week, seasonality and long-term time trends. For the single pollutant model (without adjustment for other pollutants), increased CHF admissions were significantly associated with PM₂.₅ both on warm days (>23 °C) and cool days (<23 °C), with an interquartile range increase associated with a 13% (95% CI = 9-17%) and 3% (95% CI = 0-7%) increase in CHF admissions, respectively. In the two-pollutant models, PM₂.₅ remained significant after the inclusion of SO₂ or O₃ both on warm and cool days. This study provides evidence that higher levels of PM₂.₅ increase the risk of hospital admissions for CHF.

Short-term effect of fine particulate air pollution on daily mortality: a case-crossover study in a tropical city, Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Many studies have examined the short-term effects of air pollution on frequency of daily mortality over the past two decades. However, information on the relationship between levels of fine particles (PM(2.5)) and daily mortality is relatively sparse due to limited availability of monitoring data. Further the results are inconsistent. This study was undertaken to determine whether there was an association between PM(2.5) levels and daily mortality rate in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, a large industrial city with a tropical climate. Daily mortality rate, air pollution parameters, and weather data for Kaohsiung were obtained for the period from 2006 through 2008. The relative risk of daily mortality occurrence was estimated using a time-stratified case-crossover approach, controlling for (1) weather variables, (2) day of the week, (3) seasonality, and (4) long-term time trends. For the single-pollutant model (without adjustment for other pollutants), no significant effects were found between PM(2.5) and frequency of daily mortality on warm days (≥25°C). On cool days, PM(2.5) showed significant correlation with increased risk of mortality rate for all causes and circulatory diseases in single-pollutant model. There was no indication of an association between PM(2.5) and deaths due to respiratory diseases. The relationship appeared to be stronger on cool days. This study provided evidence of associations between short-term exposure to PM(2.5) and elevated risk of death for all cause and circulatory diseases.

Fine particulate air pollution and hospital admissions for pneumonia in a subtropical city: Taipei, Taiwan

This study was undertaken to determine whether there was a correlation between fine particles (PM2.5) levels and hospital admissions for pneumonia in Taipei, Taiwan. Hospital admissions for pneumonia and ambient air pollution data for Taipei were obtained for the period from 2006 to 2010. The relative risk of hospital admissions for pneumonia was estimated using a case-crossover approach, controlling for weather variables, day of the week, seasonality, and long-term time trends. For the single-pollutant model (without adjustment for other pollutants), increased numbers of admissions for pneumonia were significantly associated with higher PM2.5 levels both on warm days (>23°C) and on cool days (<23°C). This was accompanied by an interquartile range elevation correlated with a 12% (95% CI = 16%-13%) and 4% (95% CI = 3%-6%) rise in number of admissions for pneumonia, respectively. In the two-pollutant models, PM2.5 remained significant after inclusion of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) or ozone (O₃) both on warm and on cool days. This study provides evidence that higher levels of PM2.5 increase the risk of hospital admissions for pneumonia.

Fine particulate air pollution and hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a case-crossover study in Taipei

We undertook this study to investigate whether there is an association between atmospheric fine particles (PM2.5) levels and inpatient admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Taipei, Taiwan. Data on inpatient admissions for COPD and ambient on air pollution levels in Taipei were obtained for years 2006 to 2010. We estimated the relative risk of inpatient admissions for COPD using a case-crossover design with the following control variables: weather measures, day of the week, seasonality, and long-term time trends. For the single-pollutant model (not controlling for other atmospheric pollutants), COPD admissions were significantly and positively associated with higher PM2.5 levels during both warm days (>23 °C) and cool days (<23 °C), with an interquartile range increase of 12% (95% CI = 8-16%) and 3% (95% CI = 0-7%) in COPD admissions, respectively. In the two-pollutant models, PM2.5 remained significant even controlling for SO2 or O3 on both warm and cool days. Taken as a whole, our study demonstrates that higher levels of PM2.5 may increase the risk of inpatient admissions for COPD.

Short-term effects of fine particulate air pollution on emergency room visits for cardiac arrhythmias: a case-crossover study in Taipei

This study was undertaken to determine whether there was an association between fine particles (PM₂.₅) levels and number of emergency room (ER) visits for cardiac arrhythmias in Taipei, Taiwan. ER visits for cardiac arrhythmias and ambient air pollution data for Taipei were obtained for the period 2006-2010. The relative risk (RR) of ER visits was estimated using a case-crossover approach, controlling for weather variables, day of the week, seasonality, and long-term time trends. For the single-pollutant model (without adjustment for other pollutants), increased numbers of ER cardiac arrhythmia visits were significantly associated with PM₂.₅ on both warm days (>23°C) and cool days (< 23°C), with an interquartile range rise associated with a 10% (95% CI = -15%) and 4% (95% CI = 0-8%) elevation in number of ER visits for cardiac arrhythmias, respectively. In the two-pollutant models, PM₂.₅ levels remained significant after inclusion of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) or ozone (O₃) on both warm and cool days. This study provides evidence that higher levels of PM₂.₅ increase the risk of number of ER visits for cardiac arrhythmias.

Fine particulate air pollution and hospital admissions for myocardial infarction in a subtropical city: Taipei, Taiwan

This study was undertaken to determine whether there was a correlation between fine particles (PM2.5) levels and hospital admissions for myocardial infarction (MI) in Taipei, Taiwan. Hospital admissions for MI and ambient air pollution data for Taipei were obtained for the period 2006-2010. The relative risk of hospital admissions for MI was estimated using a casecrossover approach, controlling for weather variables, day of the week, seasonality, and longterm time trends. For the single-pollutant model (without adjustment for other pollutants), increased numbers of MI admissions were significantly associated with higher PM2.5 levels both on warm days (>23°C) and on cool days (<23°C). This was accompanied by an interquartile range elevation correlated with a 10% (95% CI = 6-15%) and 5% (95% CI = 1-9%) rise in number of MI admissions, respectively. In the two-pollutant models, PM2.5 remained significant after inclusion of SO2 or O3 on both warm and cool days. This study provides evidence that higher levels of PM2.5 increase the risk of hospital admissions for MI.
