Abstract
Purpose The main purpose of the study was the formulation development of nanogels (NHs) composed of chondroitin sulfate (CS) and low molecular weight chitosan (lCH), loaded with a naringenin-β-cyclodextrin complex (NAR/β-CD), as a potential treatment for early-stage diabetic retinopathy. Methods Different formulations of NHs were prepared by varying polymer concentration, lCH ratio, and pH and, then, characterized for particle size, zeta potential, particle concentration (particles/mL) and morphology. Cytotoxicity and internalization were assessed in vitro using Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC). The NAR/β-CD complex was prepared and evaluated for morphology, complexation efficiency, and solubility. Finally, the most promising NH prototype was loaded with NAR/β-CD (NH@NAR/β-CD) and further characterized for encapsulation efficiency, loading capacity, opacity and cytotoxicity on HUVEC; in vitro release test and DPPH assay were performed to investigate NH capability to sustain NAR release and NH@NAR/β-CD antioxidant properties, respectively. Results NH properties were influenced by polymer concentration, lCH ratio, and pH. N3 (0.5 mg/mL; lCH=1.5:1; pH = 5) and N9 (0.5 mg/mL; lCH=1:1; pH = 5) showed optimal characteristics, including small size (<350 nm) and positive zeta potential, facilitating cellular uptake. The NAR/β-CD complex showed 71% complexation efficiency and enhanced NAR solubility. Since characterized by superior properties and better in vitro biocompatibility, N3 was loaded with NAR/β-CD. N3@NAR/β-CD capability to sustain in vitro NAR release, radical scavenging activity and in vitro biocompatibility were finally demonstrated. Conclusion The physico-chemical properties of N3@NAR/β-CD were responsible for their cell uptake, suggesting their potential to target retinal endothelial cells. The high NAR/β-CD complexation efficiency and the sustained NAR release over 72 hours could guarantee the maintenance of an effective drug concentration at the damage site while reducing the injection number. Further studies about the safety and the effectiveness of the intravitreal injection of NHs@NAR/β-CD will be performed on a diabetic animal model.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) are volatile compounds that may have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Despite their potential application, low water solubility and chemical instability are limiting factors. Nanoencapsulation processes can overcome this problem, protecting against external factors and promoting a moderate release. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to encapsulate Cymbopogon citratus (CC) and Origanum vulgare (OV) essential oils in β-cyclodextrin (βCD) complexes. Different ratios (w/w) between βCD and EOs (96:4, 92:8, 90:10, 88:12) were tested, seeking greater entrapment efficiency. The particles were characterized by yield, entrapment efficiency, size distribution, morphology, crystallinity, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal behavior. Furthermore, the thermal (70 °C) and photochemical (UV) stability of the free and encapsulated EO was evaluated for 48 h. The results showed that the βCD-CC 90:10 and βCD-OV 90:10 formulations presented greater entrapment efficiency. Crystalline structures of varying sizes (200 to 800 nm), trapezoidal shape, and tendency to aggregation were obtained. Changes in the βCD crystalline organization and the suppression of characteristic free oil absorption bands suggest the EO entrapment. Regarding stability results, βCD-CC remained constant when CC showed losses of 20% (photodegradation) and 60% (thermal degradation) after 48 h of stress exposure. Free OV showed slight variations in absorbance over time, while βCD-OV remained constant over 24 h (thermal degradation) and maintained 60% of oil over 48 h of photo exposure. Furthermore, OV and CC demonstrate color change over time, while βCD-OV and βCD-CC remained constant. The results demonstrate that nanoencapsulation can be an interesting tool for protecting EOs.

Abstract
Background: Olmesartan medoxomil (OLM) is the prodrug of olmesartan, an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker that has antihypertensive and antioxidant activities and renal protective properties. It exhibits low water solubility, which leads to poor bioavailability and limits its clinical potential. To improve the solubility of OLM, a host-guest inclusion complex (IC) between heptakis(2,6-di-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin (DMβCD) and the drug substance was obtained. Along with active substances, excipients play a crucial role in the quality, safety, and efficacy of pharmaceutical formulations. Therefore, the compatibility of OLM/DMβCD IC with several pharmaceutical excipients was evaluated. Methods: IC was characterized in both solid and liquid states, employing thermoanalytical techniques, universal-attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffractometry, UV spectroscopy, and saturation solubility studies. Compatibility studies were carried out using thermal and spectroscopic methods to assess potential physical and chemical interactions. Results: The 1:1 OLM:DMβCD stoichiometry ratio and the value of the apparent stability constant were determined by means of the phase solubility method that revealed an AL-type diagram. The binary system showed different physicochemical characteristics from those of the parent entities, supporting IC formation. The geometry of the IC was thoroughly investigated using molecular modeling. Compatibility studies revealed a lack of interaction between the IC and all studied excipients at ambient conditions and the thermally induced incompatibility of IC with magnesium stearate and α-lactose monohydrate. Conclusions: The results of this study emphasize that OLM/DMβCD IC stands out as a valuable candidate for future research in the development of new pharmaceutical formulations, in which precautions should be considered in choosing magnesium stearate and α-lactose monohydrate as excipients if the manufacture stage requires temperatures above 100 °C.

Abstract
This chapter presents an overall account of cyclodextrins (CDs) with a brief description of the history, classification, and properties of these macromolecules. CDs act as complexing agents for drugs to form CD-drug inclusion complexes by various techniques. These complexes lead to the modification of the physicochemical properties of drugs to make them more soluble, chemically, and photochemically stable, and less toxic. It focuses in detail on various pharmaceutical uses of CDs and their derived forms in drug solubility, bioavailability, drug stability, drug delivery, and drug safety which have been specifically highlighted. The role of CDs and derivatives as excipients in the drug formulation of solid dosage forms, parenteral dosage forms, and anticancer drugs has been emphasized. Some other applications of CDs in cosmetics, environmental protection, food technology, and analytical methods have been described.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) have been discovered to provide an efficient solution to the limited application of ester aroma molecules used in food, tobacco, and medication due to their strong smell and unstable storage. This work combined molecular modeling and experimental to analyze the conformation and controlled release of isomeric ester aroma compounds/β-CD inclusion complexes (ICs). The investigation revealed that ester aroma compounds could be effectively encapsulated within the β-CD cavity, forming ICs with low binding affinity. Furthermore, the key driving forces in ICs were identified as hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions through theoretical simulation. Results from the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments confirmed the intermolecular interaction predicted by the molecular model. Notably, the release rate of aroma compounds from L-menthyl acetate/β-CD (LMA/β-CD) IC exceeded that of terpinyl acetate/β-CD (TA/β-CD) IC. This difference is attributed to the length of the chain of aroma molecules and the variation in the position of functional groups, influencing the stable formation of ICs with β-CD. These findings hold potential implications for refining the application of ICs across diverse industries.

Abstract
Many drug candidates fail to complete the entire drug development process because of poor physicochemical properties. Solubility is an important physicochemical property which plays a vital role in various stages of drug discovery and development. Several methods have been proposed to enhance the solubility of drugs, and complex formation with cyclodextrins is among them. Beta-cyclodextrin (βCD) is a common excipient for solubilization of drugs. The aim of this study is to develop the mechanistic QSPR models to predict the solubility enhancement of a drug in the presence of βCD. In this study, the solubility enhancement of some drugs in the presence of 10mM βCD at 25°C was experimentally determined or collected from the literature. Two different models to predict the solubilization by βCD were developed by binary logistic regression using structural properties of drugs with more than 80% accuracy. Polar surface area and excess molar refraction are the main parameters for estimating solubilization by βCD. Moreover, other descriptors related to hydrophobicity and the capability of hydrogen bonding formation of molecules could improve the accuracy of the established models.

Abstract
In aqueous and solid media, 2-HP-β/γ-CD inclusion complexes with poly aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) Phenanthrene (PHN), Anthracene (ANT), Benz(a)pyrene (BaP), and Fluoranthene (FLT) were investigated for the first time. The inclusion complexes were characterized and investigated using fluorescence and 1HNMR spectroscopy. The most prevalent complexes consisting of both guests and hosts were those with a 1:1 guest-to-host ratio. The stability constants for the complexes of PHN with 2-HP-β-CD and 2-HP-γ-CD were 85 ± 12 M-1 and 49 ± 29 M-1, respectively. Moreover, the stability constants were found to be 502 ± 46 M-1 and 289 ± 44 M-1 for the complexes of ANT with both hosts. The stability constants for the complexes of BaP with 2-HP-β-CD and 2-HP-γ-CD were (1.5 ± 0.02) × 103 M-1 and (9.41 ± 0.03) × 103 M-1, respectively. The stability constant for the complexes of FLT with 2-HP-β-CD was (1.06 ± 0.06) × 103 M-1. However, FLT was observed to form a weak complex with 2-HP-γ-CD. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were used to investigate the mechanism and mode of inclusion processes, and to monitor the atomic-level stability of these complexes. The analysis of MD trajectories demonstrated that all guests formed stable inclusion complexes with both hosts throughout the duration of the simulation time, confirming the experimental findings. However, the flexible Hydroxypropyl arms prevented the PAHs from being encapsulated within the cavity; however, a stable exclusion complex was observed. The main forces that influenced the complexation included van der Waals interactions, hydrophobic forces, and C-H⋯π interaction, which contribute to the stability of these complexes.

Abstract
The utilization of peptide-chelated calcium is low due to the influence of factors such as solubility, heat and digestive environmental conditions; therefore, it is crucial to protect, prolong and stabilize this nutrient in order to enhance its efficacy. This study was conducted to prepare corn peptide-chelated calcium microcapsules using β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as the wall material through an improved ultrasonic-assisted method. The structure, solubility, thermal stability, and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of these microcapsules were thoroughly investigated and analyzed. The microcapsules were prepared using the following recommended conditions: a chelate concentration of 5 mg/mL, a mass ratio of chelate to β-CD of 1:8 g/g, and a synchronous dual-frequency ultrasound (20/28 kHz) at a power of 75 W, a duty ratio of 20/5 s/s, and a time of 20 min. These specific parameters were carefully selected to ensure the optimal fabrication of the microcapsules. The results showed that the utilization of dual-frequency ultrasound resulted in a significant increase in both the encapsulation rate and yield, which were enhanced by 15.84 % and 15.68 %, respectively, reaching impressive values of 79.17 % and 90.60 %. Moreover, the results of the structure index analysis provided further confirmation that ultrasonic treatment had a significant impact on the structure of the microcapsules, leading to a noticeable reduction in particle size and transformation into nanoparticles. Furthermore, the microcapsules demonstrated excellent solubility within a wide pH range of 2 to 10, with solubility ranging from 93.54 % to 88.68 %. Additionally, these microcapsules exhibited remarkable thermal stability, retaining a minimum of 84.8 % of their stability when exposed to temperatures ranging from 40 to 80 °C. Moreover, during gastric and intestinal digestion, these microcapsules exhibited a high slow-release rate of 44.66 % and 51.6 %, indicating their ability to gradually release calcium contents. The inclusion of dual-frequency ultrasound in the preparation of high calcium microcapsules yielded promising outcomes. Overall, our work presents a novel method for synthesizing corn peptide-chelated calcium microcapsules with desirable properties such as good solubility, excellent thermal stability, and a significant slow-release effect. These microcapsules have the potential to serve as fortified high calcium supplements.

Abstract
Antioxidant nutraceuticals can be found in several dietary sources and have been utilized for various medical benefits including health promotion, disease prevention, and support for treatment of acute and/or chronic diseases. Nonetheless, there are some limitations in delivering antioxidants via oral administration such as low solubility and permeability, pH and enzyme degradation, and instability of the compounds along the gastrointestinal tract leading to low bioavailability. In order to tackle these challenges, the utilization of lipid nanoparticles has numerous advantages to the escalating delivery system of antioxidants in nutraceuticals across the gastrointestinal tract barrier. Nowadays, several types of lipid nanoparticles can be used in antioxidant nutraceutical delivery systems through the oral route, namely solid lipid nanoparticles and nanostructured lipid carriers. This review article aims to provide notable information on the importance and applications of lipid nanoparticles in antioxidant delivery systems from nutraceuticals by an oral route. The mechanism in enhancing antioxidant compound transport across the gastrointestinal tract can occur by elevating loading capacity, improving chemical and physical stability, and increasing its bioavailability. To date, lipid nanoparticle vehicles have been developed to improve the delivery of antioxidant compounds to enhance bioavailability via oral routes. Lipid nanoparticles have remarkable benefits in delivering antioxidant nutraceuticals via oral administration. Hence, scale-up and commercialization of antioxidant nutraceutical-loaded lipid nanoparticles have been a potential technology in recent years. Subsequently, several vegetable and natural oils with antioxidant activity can also be utilized for nanoparticle formulation lipid components to increase nutraceuticals' antioxidant properties and bioavailability.

Abstract
Natural cyclodextrins (CDs) can be formed by 6, 7, or 8 glucose molecules (α-, β-, and γ-, respectively) linked in a ring, creating a cone shape. Its interior has an affinity for hydrophobic molecules, while the exterior is hydrophilic and can interact with water molecules. This feature has been used to develop active packaging applied to food, interacting with the product or its environment to improve one or more aspects of its quality or safety. It also provides monitoring information when food is optimal for consumption, as intelligent packaging is essential for the consumer and the merchant. Therefore, this review will focus on discerning which packaging is most appropriate for each situation, solubility and toxicological considerations, characterization techniques, effect on the guest properties, and other aspects related to forming the inclusion complex with bioactive molecules applied to packaging.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins are nanometric cyclic oligosaccharides with amphiphilic characteristics that increase the stability of drugs in pharmaceutical forms and bioavailability, in addition to protecting them against oxidation and UV radiation. Some of their characteristics are low toxicity, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. They are divided into α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins, each with its own particularities. They can undergo surface modifications to improve their performances. Furthermore, their drug inclusion complexes can be made by various methods, including lyophilization, spray drying, magnetic stirring, kneading, and others. Cyclodextrins can solve several problems in drug stability when incorporated into dosage forms (including tablets, gels, films, nanoparticles, and suppositories) and allow better topical biological effects of drugs at administration sites such as skin, eyeballs, and oral, nasal, vaginal, and rectal cavities. However, as they are nanostructured systems and some of them can cause mild toxicity depending on the application site, they must be evaluated for their nanotoxicology and nanosafety aspects. Moreover, there is evidence that they can cause severe ototoxicity, killing cells from the ear canal even when applied by other administration routes. Therefore, they should be avoided in otologic administration and should have their permeation/penetration profiles and the in vivo hearing system integrity evaluated to certify that they will be safe and will not cause hearing loss.

Abstract
Quercetin (QRC), a flavonoid found in foods and plants such as red wine, onions, green tea, apples, and berries, possesses remarkable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These properties make it effective in combating cancer cells, reducing inflammation, protecting against heart disease, and regulating blood sugar levels. To enhance the potential of inclusion complexes (ICs) containing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in cancer therapy, they were transformed into nano-inclusion complexes (NICs). In this research, NICs were synthesized using ethanol as a reducing agent in the nanoprecipitation process. By employing FT-IR analysis, it was observed that hydrogen bonds were formed between QRC and β-CD. Moreover, the IC molecules formed NICs through the aggregation facilitated by intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Proton NMR results further confirmed the occurrence of proton shielding and deshielding subsequent to the formation of NICs. The introduction of β-CDs led to the development of a distinctive feather-like structure within the NICs. The particle sizes were consistently measured around 200 nm, and both SAED and XRD patterns indicated the absence of crystalline NICs, providing supporting evidence. Through cytotoxicity and fluorescence-assisted cell-sorting analysis, the synthesized NICs showed no significant damage in the cell line of MCF-7. In comparison to QRC alone, the presence of high concentrations of NICs exhibited a lesser degree of toxicity in normal human lung fibroblast MRC-5 cells. Moreover, the individual and combined administration of both low and high concentrations of NICs effectively suppressed the growth of cancer cells (MDA-MB-231). The solubility improvement resulting from the formation of QRC-NICs with β-CD enhanced the percentage of cell survival for MCF-7 cell types.

Abstract
The real problem in pharmaceutical preparation is drugs' poor aqueous solubility, low permeability through biological membranes, and short biological t1/2. Conventional drug delivery systems are not able to overcome these problems. However, cyclodextrins (CDs) and their derivatives can solve these challenges. This article aims to summarize and review the history, properties, and different applications of cyclodextrins, especially the ability of inclusion complex formation. It also refers to the effects of cyclodextrin on drug solubility, bioavailability, and stability. Moreover, it focuses on preparing and applying gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as novel drug delivery systems. It also studies the uses and effects of cyclodextrins in this field as novel drug carriers and targeting devices. The system formulated from AuNPs linked with CD molecules combines the advantages of both CD and AuNPs. Cyclodextrins benefit in increasing aqueous drug solubility, loading capacity, stability, and size control of gold NPs. Also, AuNPs are applied as diagnostic and therapeutic agents because of their unique chemical properties. Plus, AuNPs possess several advantages such as ease of detection, targeted and selective drug delivery, greater surface area, high loading efficiency, and higher stability than microparticles. In the present article, we tried to present the potential pharmaceutical applications of CD-derived AuNPs in biomedical applications including antibacterial, anticancer, gene-drug delivery, and various targeted drug delivery applications. Also, the article highlighted the role of CDs in the preparation and improvement of catalytic enzymes, the formation of self-assembling molecular print boards, the fabrication of supramolecular functionalized electrodes, and biosensors formation.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins have received attention recently due to their superior binding with countless hydrophobic molecules. The host-guest interaction between the cyclodextrin cavity and the hydrophobic component not only facilitates the formation of a strong inclusion complex (IC), but also improves its stability against thermal degradation. The functionality of cyclodextrins for the delivery of hydrophilic components is less explored in comparison. This study discusses the application of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) for the delivery of highly bioavailable and hydrophilic iron, ferric sodium EDTA, which exhibits great functionality in the presence of polyphenols and phytates with potential application in food fortification. The formation of IC was dependent on the cyclodextrin amount and alcoholic co-solvent and was influenced by the stirring duration. For ferric sodium EDTA, the highest inclusion rate (IR) of ∼77% was obtained after 72 hours of mixing in 25.4% (v/v) alcohol at a ratio of iron : βCD of 1 : 6. A higher IR (∼96%) was obtained after 6 hours of stirring with less soluble ferrous ammonium phosphate in comparison. The melting temperature (Tm) of the ferrous ammonium phosphate complex increased from ∼172 to ∼294 °C. The high IR and enhanced thermal resistance of the complex make βCDs potential carriers for ferrous ammonium phosphate delivery and fortification of foods processed at high temperatures.

Abstract
Eugenol is a natural compound with well-known repellent activity. However, its pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications are limited, since this compound is highly volatile and thermolabile. Nanoencapsulation provides protection, stability, conservation, and controlled release for several compounds. Here, eugenol was included in β-cyclodextrin, and the complex was characterized through X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Additionally, we used molecular dynamics simulations to explore the eugenol-β-cyclodextrin complex stability with temperature increases. Our computational result demonstrates details of the molecular interactions and conformational changes of the eugenol-β-cyclodextrin complex and explains its stability between temperatures 27°C and 48°C, allowing its use in formulations that are subjected to varied temperatures.

Abstract
Food safety issues are a major threat to public health and have attracted much attention. Therefore, exploring accurate, efficient, sensitive, and economical detection methods is necessary to ensure consumers' health. In this regard, cyclodextrins (CDs) are promising candidates because they are nontoxic and noncaloric. The main body of CDs is a ring structure with hydrophobic cavity and hydrophilic exterior wall. Due to the above characteristics, CDs can encapsulate small guest molecules into their cavities, enhance their stability, avoid agglomeration and oxidation, and, at the same time, interact through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Additionally, they can selectively capture the target molecules to be detected and improve the sensitivity of food detection. This review highlights recent advances in CD inclusion technology in food safety analysis, covering various applications from small molecule and heavy metal sensing to amino acid and microbial sensing. Finally, challenges and prospects for CDs and their derivatives are presented. The current review can provide a reference and guidance for current research on CDs in the food industry and may inspire breakthroughs in this field.

Abstract
The present study prepared inclusion complexes of S-allylcysteine (SAC) and cyclodextrin (α, β, γ) by the freeze-drying (FD) method and verified the inclusion behavior of the solid dispersion. Also, the study investigated the effect of SAC/CD complex formation on liver tumor cells. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) measurements confirmed the exothermic titration curve for SAC/αCD, suggesting a molar ratio of SAC/αCD = 1/1, but no exothermic/endothermic reaction was obtained for the SAC/βCD and SAC/γCD system. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) results showed that the characteristic diffraction peaks of SAC and CDs disappeared in FD (SAC/αCD) and FD (SAC/γCD), indicated by a halo pattern. On the other hand, diffraction peaks originating from SAC and βCDs were observed in FD (SAC/βCD). Near-infrared (NIR) absorption spectroscopy results showed that CH and OH groups derived from SAC and OH groups derived from αCD and γCD cavity were shifted, suggesting complex formation due to intermolecular interactions occurring in SAC/αCD and SAC/γCD. Stability test results showed that the stability was maintained with FD (SAC/αCD) over FD (SAC/βCD) and FD (SAC/γCD). In 1H-1H of NOESY NMR measurement, FD (SAC/αCD) was confirmed to have a cross peak at the CH group of the alkene of SAC and the proton (H-3, -5, -6) in the αCD cavity. In FD (SAC/γCD), a cross peak was confirmed at the alkyl group on the carbonyl group side of SAC and the proton (H-3) in the cavity of γCD. From the above, it was suggested that the inclusion mode of SAC is different on FD (SAC/CDs). The results of the hepatocyte proliferation inhibition test using HepG2 cells showed that FD (SAC/βCD) inhibited cell proliferation. On the other hand, FD (SAC/αCD) and FD (SAC/γCD) did not show a significant decrease in the number of viable cells. These results suggest that the difference in the inclusion mode may contribute to the stability and cell proliferation inhibition.

Abstract
Aurisin A (AA), an aristolane dimer sesquiterpene isolated from the luminescent mushroom Neonothopanus nambi, exhibits various biological and pharmacological effects. However, its poor solubility limits its use for further medicinal applications. This study aimed to improve the water solubility of AA via complexation with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and its derivatives (2,6-di-O-methyl-βCD (DMβCD) and 2-hydroxypropyl-βCD (HPβCD). A phase solubility analysis demonstrated that the solubility of AA linearly enhanced with increasing concentrations of βCDs (ranked in the order of AA/DMβCD > AA/HPβCD > AA/βCD). Notably, βCDs, especially DMβCD, increased the thermal stability of the inclusion complexes. The thermodynamic study indicated that the complexation between AA and βCD(s) was a spontaneous endothermic reaction, and AA/DMβCD possesses the highest binding strength. The complex formation between AA and DMβCD was confirmed by means of FT-IR, DSC, and SEM. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the stability and compactness of the AA/DMβCD complex were higher than those of the DMβCD alone. The encapsulation of AA led to increased intramolecular H-bond formations on the wider rim of DMβCD, enhancing the complex stability. The antiproliferative activity of AA against A549 and H1975 lung cancer cells was significantly improved by complexation with DMβCD. Altogether, the satisfactory water solubility, high thermal stability, and enhanced antitumor potential of the AA/DMβCD inclusion complex would be useful for its application as healthcare products or herbal medicines.

Abstract
This study, nanoscale α-, β-, γ-cyclodextrin (CD)-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were successfully prepared using solvothermal assisted ultrasound method. CD-MOFs were used as nanocarriers to encapsulate catechin (CA), and their encapsulation capacities were evaluated. Encapsulation capacities of CD-MOFs to incorporate CA followed the order: β-CD-MOFs > γ-CD-MOFs > α-CD-MOFs. CA/CD-MOFs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC and SEM results provided evidence for the formation of CA/CD-MOFs. XRD results indicated the new solid crystalline phases formed in CA/CD-MOFs complex. Results of FT-IR showed that CA was combined with CD-MOFs through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Current research demonstrated that encapsulation of CA within CD-MOFs provided it against light, oxygen and temperature. Moreover, encapsulation by CD-MOFs improved storage stability and bioavailability of CA. Thus, these CA/CD-MOFs have potential to be used as nutritional supplements and functional foods.

Abstract
Polyphenols are inversely associated with the incidence of chronic diseases, but therapeutic use is limited by poor stability and bioaccessibility. Encapsulation has been shown to overcome some of these limitations. A selection of polyphenols (catechin, gallic acid, and epigallocatechin gallate) and their combinations were encapsulated in beta-cyclodextrin (βCD). Encapsulation was characterized and the thermal and storage stability was evaluated using the 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay. The samples were then subjected to in vitro digestion using a simple digestion (SD) model (gastric and duodenal phases) and a more complex digestion (CD) model (oral, gastric, and duodenal phases). Thereafter, the chemical (oxygen radical absorbance capacity assay) and cellular (dichlorofluorescein diacetate assay in Caco-2 cells) antioxidant and antiglycation (advanced glycation end-products assay) activities were determined. Inclusion complexes formed at a 1:1 molar ratio with a high encapsulation yield and efficiency. Encapsulation altered the morphology of the samples, increased the thermal stability of some and the storage stability of all samples. Encapsulation maintained the antioxidant activity of all samples and significantly improved the antiglycation and cellular antioxidant activities of some polyphenols following SD. In conclusion, the formed inclusion complexes of βCD with polyphenols had greater storage stability, without altering the beneficial cellular effects of the polyphenols.

Abstract
This review offers a vision of the chemical behaviour of natural ingredients, synthetic drugs and other related compounds complexed using cyclodextrins. The review takes care of different sections related to i) the inclusion complexes formation with cyclodextrins, ii) the determination of the inclusion formation constant, iii) the most used methods to prepare host inclusion in the non-polar cavity of cyclodextrins and iv) the analytical techniques to evidence host inclusion. The review provides different literature that shows the application of cyclodextrins to improve physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of food compounds including solubility, stability and their elimination/masking. Moreover, the review also offers examples of commercial food/supplement products of cyclodextrins to indicate that cyclodextrins can be used to generate biotechnological substances with innovative properties and improve the development of food products.

Abstract
In this study, following the green, environmentally friendly and sustainable development strategy, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were prepared through a solvent-free esterification reaction between microcrystalline cellulose and maleic anhydride, combined with subsequent ultrasonic treatment, and maleic-anhydride-modified CNC-reinforced zein/catechin/β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanoparticles nanocomposite films were prepared by a facile solution casting. The amount of CNCs in the film matrix was 0–8 wt%, and their effect on structural, physicochemical and functional properties of the resulting films were investigated. SEM images showed that the addition of CNCs made the microstructure of the film more smooth and uniform. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds between CNCs and film matrix were supported by FT-IR. XRD analysis also confirmed the appearance of a crystalline peak due to the existence of CNCs inside the films. The incorporation of CNCs significantly reduced water vapor permeability, water solubility and the swelling degree of the nanocomposite film, and also significantly increased tensile strength and elongation at break from 12.66 to 37.82 MPa and 4.5% to 5.2% (p < 0.05). Moreover, nanocomposite film packaging with CNCs can effectively inhibit the oxidation of soybean oil.

Abstract
Zein films incorporated with catechin/β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanoparticles (CINPs) were developed, and the structure, physicochemical, antioxidant and release properties of the films were characterized. FT-IR results indicated that intermolecular hydrogen bonds were formed between the CINPs and zein. XRD analysis showed that the addition of CINPs did not change the crystal structure of zein film. SEM images observed that the addition of NPs made zein film surface more smooth and dense. Since the nanoparticles occupy the pores of the film matrix, the swelling degree and water vapor barrier property were improved. CINPs addition significantly increased tensile strength, from 2.28 to 12.49 MPa, and increased elongation at break, from 1.52 % to 4.5 % (p < 0.05). The nanocomposite film still maintains strong antioxidant activity after storage. The release behavior of catechin from zein film was controlled. Therefore, zein composites can be used as a potential antioxidant food packaging film-forming material.

Abstract
Risperidone (RSP) is an atypical antipsychotic drug used in treating schizophrenia, behavioral, and psychological symptoms of dementia and irritability associated with autism. The drug substance is practically insoluble in water and exhibits high lipophilicity. It also presents incompatibilities with pharmaceutical excipients such as magnesium stearate, lactose, and cellulose microcrystalline. RSP encapsulation by randomly methylated β-cyclodextrin (RM-β-CD) was performed in order to enhance drug solubility and stability and improve its biopharmaceutical profile. The inclusion complex formation was evaluated using thermal methods, powder X-ray diffractometry (PXRD), universal-attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (UATR-FTIR), UV spectroscopy, and saturation solubility studies. The 1:1 stoichiometry ratio and the apparent stability constant of the inclusion complex were determined by means of the phase solubility method. The compatibility between the supramolecular adduct and pharmaceutical excipients starch, anhydrous lactose, magnesium stearate, and cellulose microcrystalline was studied employing thermoanalytical tools (TG-thermogravimetry/DTG-derivative thermogravimetry/HF-heat flow) and spectroscopic techniques (UATR-FTIR, PXRD). The compatibility study reveals that there are no interactions between the supramolecular adduct with starch, magnesium stearate, and cellulose microcrystalline, while incompatibility with anhydrous lactose is observed even under ambient conditions. The supramolecular adduct of RSP with RM-β-CD represents a valuable candidate for further research in developing new formulations with enhanced bioavailability and stability, and the results of this study allow a pertinent selection of three excipients that can be incorporated in solid dosage forms.

Abstract
DFT–PCM–water calculations of 1H NMR chemical shifts for 28 optimized catechin–beta-CD complex structures revealed that adsorption mode of complexion should be predominant in aqueous media, with full-inclusion 1 : 1 structure being in total disagreement with experimental 1H NMR profile (D2O).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Almond skins are rich in bioactive compounds that undergo oxidation/degradation phenomena and are poorly soluble in water, reducing in vivo absorption and bioavailability, factors that influence the pharmacological activity of an active product. We developed a dried acetonic almond skins extract/cyclodextrin complex to improve extract solubility, dissolution rate and biological activity. METHODS A lyophilized acetonic almond skin extract was produced. To optimize complex formulation, phase solubility studies and complex characterization (absorption studies, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), morphology, solubility studies) were performed. To evaluate a possible use in healthy products, tumor necrosis factor-α levels and reactive oxygen species release, as well as cicloxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression in intestinal epithelial cells, were also evaluated. RESULTS Phase solubility studies showed a Bs-type profile. A 1:1 dried acetonic almond skins extract/cyclodextrin ratio was able to improve extract water solubility and dissolution rate (100% in 45 min). The UV-Vis spectra of complex revealed a hypsochromic and hyperchromic effect, probably due to a partial inclusion of extract in cyclodextrin cavity through weak bonds, confirmed by DSC and morphology studies. The technological improvement in the extract characteristics also led to better biological activity. In fact, the complex effectively reduces tumor necrosis factor-α levels with respect to the pure extract and significantly inhibits the reactive oxygen species release, even if only at the lower concentration of 5 μg/mL. CONCLUSION The complex was able to overcome solubility problems and could be used in inflammatory disease.
