Abstract
This state-of-the-science review is aimed at identifying the sources, occurrence, and concentrations of EDCs, including potential public health risks associated with drinking water and aquatic food resources from Nigerian inland waters. A total of 6024 articles from scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of science, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and African Journals Online) were identified, out of which, 103 eligible articles were selected for this study. Eleven (11) classes of EDCs (OCPs, PCBs, PBDEs, PAHs, BPA, OTs, PEs, PCs, PPCPs, sterols and n-alkanes) were identified from drinking waters, river sediments and aquatic food species from Nigerian rivers, showing that OCPs were the most studied and reported EDCs. Analytical methods used were HPLC, LC-MS/MS, GC-FID, GC-ECD and GC-MS with all EDCs identified to originate from anthropogenic sources. Carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic effects were the highest (54.4 %) toxicological effects identified, while reproductive/endocrine disruptive effects (15.2 %) and obesogenic effects (4.3 %) were the least identified toxicological effects. The targeted hazard quotient (THQ) and cancer risk (CR) were generally highest in children, compared to the adult populations, indicating age-specific toxicity. PEs produced the highest THQ (330.3) and CR (1.2) for all the EDCs in drinking water for the children population, suggesting enhanced vulnerability of this population group, compared to the adult population. Due to associated public health, wildlife and environmental risk of EDCs and their increasing concentrations in drinking water and food fish species from Nigerian inland waters, there is an urgent need for focused and strategic interventions, sensitization and policy formulation/implementation towards public health and aquatic food safety in Nigeria.

Abstract
Sex inversion in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis under the influence of heavy metals as one of the reasons for the shift in the sex ratio in the mussel population on the Black Sea coastal zone of Crimea were considered in the work. The present study is the first to directly show that heavy metals can cause females of the mussel M. galloprovincialis to change into males during post-spawning development of gonads. The degree of impact of heavy metals on the sex change in mussel females was different and decreased in the following sequence: Cu2+ → Cd2+ → Hg2+ → Pb2+ → Zn2+. Copper ions had the greatest effect, which caused a sex inversion in 54 % of females. The heavy metals Hg2+ and Pb2+ were also quite toxic causing mortality in 13 % and 10 % of individuals, respectively. It is possible to use M. galloprovincialis as a model organism in the study of mechanism of environmental sex reversal in bivalves.

Abstract
This study presents the first incidence of intersex associated with testis-ova in spotted scat (Scatophagus argus) reared in a controlled environment. The testis-ova is associated with the abnormal occurrence of primary oocytes (POs) in some male testis and is referred to as ectopic primary oocytes (Ecto-PO), whiles individuals with Ecto-PO are called "Ecto-PO gonad/individuals." We investigated gonads of 129 male spotted scat aged 4-12 and 18 months after hatch (mah) by histological studies for the presence of female sexual characteristics. A total of 20 out of 88 gonads representing 22.7% of male fish aged 6-12, or 15.5% of all male fish sampled, were found to have visible Ecto-PO. At least, the Ecto-PO had an average of 7 oocytes per gonadal section, indicating high severity. The Ecto-PO appears after sex differentiation and degenerates during sexual maturation. The Ecto-PO did not significantly influence the expression pattern of male and female sex-related genes performed using qPCR. Immunofluorescence of 42sp50 specifically stained the Ecto-PO without influence from the surrounding testicular tissues. In addition, temperature did not correlate with the proliferation of the Ecto-PO, but rather gonad developmental strategy. The results show that the naturally occurring Ecto-PO might not be detrimental to testis development and could be considered a frequent-high-level incidence of natural aberration. This study highlights the intricacy of fish sex differentiation and provides a new research chapter to ascertain the mystery behind the occurrence of Ecto-PO.

Abstract
The correlation between endocrine active contaminants in the environment and alterations in reproductive development of Sarotherodon melanotheron from Lagos lagoon has been investigated. Sediment and a total of 155 fish (74 males and 81 females) were collected between November 2014-March 2015 from selected contaminated sites (Ikorodu, Oworonshoki, Makoko and Idumota) and a putative control site (Igbore) along the lagoon. Sediment contaminant analysis revealed, significantly higher concentration of lindane, dieldrin, 4-iso-nonylphenol, 4-t-octylphenol and monobutyltin cation at the contaminated sites. Examination of gross morphological and histological changes of fish gonads showed a 27.4% prevalence of intersex in the sampled fish, of which 78% were males (testes-ova) and 22% were females (ovo-testis). Quantitative PCR (qPCR) of liver transcripts revealed the presence of vitellogenin (vtg) levels in male fish from contaminated sites. Zona radiata proteins (zrp) mRNA levels were significantly higher in females, compared to male fish. In general, significantly lower vtg and zrp transcripts levels were recorded at Igbore (control site), compared with contaminated sites. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed site and sex relationship in biological responses and contaminants, including trace metals, demonstrating that measured endocrine responses in fish were associated with contaminant burden in sediment. In addition, positive relationships were observed in male fish from Idumota, Oworonshoki and Ikorodu with vtg and dieldrin/4-iso-nonyphenol, with higher levels in male fish, compared to females. Further, contaminants from the Makoko, Oworonshoki and Ikorodu sites were positively associated with higher GSI and zrp in females. More importantly, the severity of intersex and changes in vtg transcripts imply a progressive feminization of male fish with concomitant alteration in the reproductive health of fish inhabiting the Lagos lagoon.

Abstract
In order to document the potential endocrine disrupting and toxic effect of the municipal wastewater effluents discharged into the Sfax coastal area (South of Tunisia), specimens of clam R. decussatus were collected from a reference site and were in vivo exposed to treated sewage effluent for 30 days. To this end, estrogenic and androgenic activities were measured in the gills to assess potential accumulation and regulation of active compounds. After effluent exposure androgenic activity in organic extracts increased up to fivefold compared to controls and remained elevated, while estrogenic activity was not significantly affected by exposure. As a consequence, remarkable disruptions in the gametogenesis activity, glycogen content, and Vitellogenin-like protein levels in male clams were observed. A parallel analysis of heavy metals in clam tissues was determined. A significant uptake of Ni, Zn, and Pb in soft tissues of exposed clams was observed. The significant increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations as a function of exposure time implies that clams have been exposed to an oxidative stress probably due to the presence of high metal concentrations in sewage effluent. Correlation analysis has revealed a statistically significant and positive relationship between MDA levels and metal concentrations in clams' tissues. The acetylcholinesterase activity was not significantly affected by exposure. Altogether, these results showed that a short-term exposure to a mixture of chemical compounds released by the Sfax wastewater treatment plant induce adverse physiological and reproductive effects in R. decussatus. Further studies are underway in order to evaluate its long-term impacts on aquatic wildlife in the gulf of Gabes area.

Abstract
Estuarine clams Scrobicularia plana were sampled from 108 intertidal locations around the English Channel and adjacent areas. Although S. plana is believed to be a strict gonochorist, 58% of the populations sampled included intersexed individuals (described as male clams exhibiting ovotestis). Over the entire region, on average, 8.6% of male clams exhibited intersex, although proportions of affected males ranged from 0% to 53% depending on location. The severity of intersex was assessed using a simple classification scale, with the majority of individuals showing low levels of impact. Sex ratios were significantly skewed at some sites. There were no significant relationships between incidence or severity of intersex; or with size or parasitism of individual clams. Intersex in S. plana is a useful tool to assess endocrine disruptive effects in estuaries, although mechanisms of impact and causative agents remain uncertain.

Abstract
This study attempts to propose the possibility of the sex reversal in Sinonovacula constricta and Gomphina veneriformis by confirming the changes in the sex ratio with the shell length in the same population level. For analysis of sex ratio, 100 individuals of S. constricta (SL 26.5-95.0 mm) and 2385 individuals of G. veneriformis (SL 15.1-60.1 mm) were used. Sex was analyzed histologically. Both species displayed the tendency of increase in the female proportion with increase in shell length. In this study, changes in the sex ratio in accordance with the growth of S. constricta and G. veneriformis are determined to be indirect evidence that signifies their sex reversal.

Abstract
The sex ratio (F:M) in the same population of oyster, Crassostrea gigas at the commencement of the study (2007) was 1:1.0, but changed to 1:2.8 by the end of the study (2008). The sex reversal rate in two-year-old oysters was 40.2%. Specifically, female to male sex reversal rate was 66.1%, which is higher than the male to female sex reversal rate of 21.1%. The sex reversal pattern of C. gigas appears to go from male⇒female⇒male, and as such is determined to be rhythmical hermaphroditism.

Abstract
This study histologically describes the intersexuality of Scomberomorus niphonius collected from the coastal area near Jeju Island. A total of 126 S. niphonius, collected from March to July 2012 with a total length of 62.4 cm (±17.5) and a total weight of 1,701.9 g (±1,528.9) were used for analyses. From a histological perspective, two types of intersex were confirmed. One type had scattered germ cells from the opposite sex within the gonad. The second type developed germ cells from the opposite sex in the connective tissue of the outer gonadal membrane. The intersexuality was 14.3% (n=18/126), with females (21.3%; n=16/75) exhibiting a higher rate than males (3.9%; n=2/51). Abstract
The bivalve Scrobicularia plana, an important species for the structure and functioning of estuarine and coastal mudflats, was studied in thirteen sites from NW France differing by their degree of contamination to document the presence of reproduction impairments (intersex, sex ratio, gonadosomatic indices) in relation to the condition revealed by using hepatosomatic and condition indices. In agreement with recent studies in other European estuaries, intersex was revealed in all the studied estuaries, including sites the chemical and ecological status of which is considered "good" according to the criteria of the European Water Framework Directive. The presence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) could result in such disturbances. Our results re-inforce the concern linked to the subtle effects of EDCs, which are active at very low doses, often in the absence of any major sign of toxicity. However at this stage, no clear link may be established between intersex and population effects.
